here is no question that this past year was a difficult one, and the importance of a strong Jewish community on Grounds was never more evident. Whether it was creating spaces for students to process the events of August 11th and 12th or supporting students as they experienced, many for the first time, challenges to their relationship with Israel, Hillel staff were here to listen, offer advice, and advocate for Jewish students.

I am proud of the work our staff and student leaders did this year, but I am most proud of the strength of this community and that students trust Hillel as a resource in these difficult moments.

There are many hallmarks of a strong community, but I believe the power of our community lies in the strength of the relationships staff and student leaders have built with individuals. It is through building relationships and caring about the student as a whole that allows us the opportunity to be a part of students’ lives during hard times. It is also how we are able to effectively engage students in meaningfully Jewish ways, and as you will see throughout this Impact Report, each relationship has a dramatic and lasting impact on a student’s Jewish journey.

And finally, I want to thank you. Your generosity enables us to do this incredibly important work. Together, with your support, we are building a strong and vibrant Jewish community on Grounds one relationship at a time. We have so many individual Jewish students who are passionate about Judaism, about what they are studying, and about what they are involved in around Grounds.

Having peers like that is really inspiring and invigorating. And after August, our community was so active and mobilized - people were engaging with Hillel in a whole new way. It made me really proud to be Jewish and proud to be on this campus.”

Each student relationship highlighted demonstrates a different way into this community - and the stories of each friendship help show this community’s strength in welcoming new people and engaging them based on their interests.

These sidebars also showcase our dedication to knowing students as individuals and highlighting the way that our community has been built: relationship by relationship.

T

his year the Jewish community at UVa became more tight-knit.

Brody Jewish Center staff was there as students struggled, and as they prevailed. Hillel supported students as they tackled anti-Israel sentiment on Grounds, confronted the reality that Neo-Nazis marched their Lawn, and worked with the ADL to combat antisemitism.

But Hillel also celebrated students and their accomplishments as they educated their peers and made steps toward improving the University community. And while it was a difficult year for this community, students pushed through and became a stronger, closer, and more able community because of it.

“Talia was one of the very first people I met at UVa,” Jamie told us.

“I remember thinking: ‘Wow I really have a lot of respect for this girl. She has a really firm connection with her Jewish identity and with Israel.’”

FOURTH YEAR SEMINAR

F

ourth year seminar emerged last year as a landmark program to help graduating students prepare for postgrad life and learn how to build a Jewish community after leaving UVa. Individual students led bi-weekly sessions on topics of their choice, which staff helped pair with related Jewish content. Topics ranged from improv to travel to maintaining relationships with long distance friends.

“Fourth Year Seminar was the perfect way to reflect on the time we chose to spend in Jewish spaces,” one student said. “It really gave us the chance to connect and create a cohort before we all left.”

Talia and Jamie got closer their second year while they taught Hebrew school in town.

They’d talk on the bus ride home, and both are grateful for the friendship that came out of the small, unexpected moments.

S

tudent self-governance has long been a defining characteristic of UVa, so it should be no surprise that student leadership takes center stage at the Brody Jewish Center. It’s part of Hillel’s mission: empowering the Jewish future. Students drive almost every part of Hillel at UVa, and actively engage in creating opportunities to connect with their peers.

“I really assumed it was staff and Rabbi Jake making the decisions for Hillel,” one student said. “But during our first Jewish Leadership Council meeting, I realized it wasn’t students being told what Hillel was going to do, it was really staff asking us what we thought Hillel should do.”

Being on Jewish Leadership Council was one of the first times in my life where I had to make actual decisions that were real, and represented other people. It helped me think things through more thoroughly, which really helped me grow as a leader.”

Talia and Saskia met during Saskia’s orientation - where Talia happened to be serving as an Orientation Leader.

“Being an Orientation Leader was always so fun, because I’d find and meet incoming WaJews,” Talia said.

I will always remember when I met Talia. I saw a Jewish sticker on her laptop and knew I had to ask her questions about Jewish life at UVa. Through Talia and others she introduced me to, I met lots of other Jewish students at UVa - and suddenly Judaism was not just centered around my family, but it became something I could share with my closest friends.”

E

ngagement interns are tasked with creating spaces for other students and forging the individual connections that are integral to building a community.

SASKIA FELDMAN 3RD YEAR

Saskia and Josh first met when Saskia interned with Hillel engaging first years.

Saskia reached out to Josh early on in the year to invite him to one of Hillel’s tailgates on the Lawn.

“I knew Josh’s older brother so I knew to look for another redhead Jewish person from the beginning,” Saskia said. “He’s just the friendliest face I’ve ever met, and that made him such a great engagement intern. He’s so warm, and is so ready to help anyone.”

“

This year, Hillel student interns did everything they could to connect with other Jewish students - from dinner in dining halls to sports watch parties at Hillel to coffee dates to a potato “bar” during study hours - complete with French fries, potato wedges, sweet potato fries, tater tots, and everything in between.

“The thing about being an engagement intern is that you give back to the Jewish community. But you get something too - these amazing friendships and long-lasting relationships,” one student said.

T

his year’s Taglit Birthright Israel trip gave seventy-six students and four staff members ten days to discover Israel. But that’s certainly not all. Birthright provided limitless ways for students to interact with and investigate their Judaism. It also gave them a peek into what a Jewish community could look like back at UVa. And it’s by no accident that most students who go on Birthright trips with Hillel at UVa do so because their peers recommend it. “I knew a few of my fraternity brothers who had gone, and I knew a few that were going this year,” one student said. “ I definitely felt more comfortable traveling so far because of that - but I was really happy to make new friends on the trip as well.”

Colton and Josh met when they pledged AEPi together their first year. And though they already knew each other, both said going on Birthright together really added to their friendship when they got home.

“We were disappointed at first we weren’t on the same bus,” Josh said.

“But soon we realized it helped us be open to meeting more people and getting close to people we wouldn’t have met otherwise.”

“

In AEPi, we’re not always discussing religion or Israel or global politics, but because of Birthright, we actually talk about that kind of thing more.

Our friendship became more than a fraternity relationship.”

Colton and Michael met first year, when they lived on the same hall.

“Meeting Michael and seeing how open he was about his Judaism was something really new to me. Michael being so open about his religion really made me confident talking about my own. I would have never gone to Hillel if it weren’t for Michael.”

“

I definitely recognized that Colton didn’t come from the same kind of Jewish community I come from. I tried to let him know that it isn’t about how you were raised, whether or not you went to temple or had a bar mitzvah - it’s about connecting with people.”

This trip took tikkun olam (repairing the world) as a broad idea and put it into action, making it something tangible and not just an overarching theme. Repairing the world became something I could execute.

W

hen seven students heard about a Alternative Spring Break trip with Hillel to Jamaica, they expected community service and sandy beaches. “We really didn’t know how Jewish the trip would be, but I was pleasantly surprised,” one student said. And the “Jewish” content wasn’t just text and Jewish learning - it was also in the friendships and connections with the Jewish community. “I went on ASB because I wanted to get closer to other people in the Jewish community,” another student said. “Coming back, I felt like I had seven new deep friendships.”

After reaching Jamaica and spending the first few days with kids doing small helpful tasks around a school, our Hoos really started to question and explore the space between volunteering and tourism.

hile the Brody Jewish Center is a space for all Jewish students, it’s proven that student groups form microcommunities and become intimate spaces for students to connect one on one with others who share similar interests.

This year student groups started and improved on many past programs - from hosting a Hunger Banquet to educate on food insecurity to bringing Israeli graffiti artists to Grounds to a putting on a magical Havdallah on the Lawn.

Michael and Annie met spring semester when Michael joined Jewish Religious Life Council to get more involved after Birthright.

“Annie has been a great mentor for me - she’s always been very open and welcoming. From the outside, you’d have no idea how hard she works - you’d think she just shows up on Fridays and leads services - but it’s so much work that she’s put into it and it really shows,” Michael said.

“

Michael just came in and had all these new ideas for JRLC. Actually, his speech about why he wants to be involved made me tear up. It was so clear that he really wants to help other students experience religious life.”

This is a center of my life: tikkun olam, community service, and engaging with the community. With Tikkun Olam Committee, I can bring other people into the things I love.”

Clara and Annie met during Clara’s first year at the Jewish Activities Fair. Soon after, Annie invited Clara to come to Shabbat. Clara said there was nothing like the meaningful space Annie helped create.

“I think the second Clara got to Grounds, she wanted to be a leader,” Annie said.

“She’s younger than me, but she’s still someone I look up to.”

“

Annie is such a positive person and never hesitates to bring someone in and find common ground. She has such a grounding energy and is an incredibly kind person and she brings that to everyone personally and genuinely.”

“N

o matter how stressed or upset I was, Jewish Women’s Group gave me an opportunity to be present and spend time with women that are now my best and most positive friends,” one student said. Jewish Women’s Group has proved to be one of the most popular and meaningful programs Hillel offers, providing women with spaces to think through their daily lives and interactions with a distinctively Jewish lens.

And though Hillel staff spoke to many students about their experiences, they all said one thing in particular. “I think about the feeling in that room. It’s so energizing,” one student said. “It was always the highlight of my week,” another said.

A new era of Jewish life at UVa

T

here’s something about a building with history, about walls that contain a shared and fluid memory which transcends moments, eclipses single events, and moves through generations.

For more than 75 years, the historic home at 1824 University Circle has held the living memory of Jewish life at the University of Virginia. For more than 75 years, Jewish students have been calling this home their home, have been fusing Jewish identity with place and community within the walls of this building.

It is with great pleasure that the Brody Jewish Center shares the ‘Make Our House a Home’ revitalization campaign to create a modern and future place for Jewish community within the historic home of Hillel.

The project is focused on small and intimate spaces for students to study and connect. It brings the engagement strategies that have helped the BJC reach and speak to so many students to center stage - providing a physical space that focuses on the importance of individual connection. Something, that by the end of this report, you can understand the importance of in our community.

Construction on the project began in May 2018, and is projected to finish early spring semester of next year. So far, staff has raised over $2 million for the project, and are getting closer to the $3 million goal.

Hillel shows me what a Jewish space can be. The BJC has really set the precedent for a strong Jewish community that welcomes different views on religion, social action, and politics but maintains a space to be Jewish together. This has set the bar really high for me moving forward, and has given me so much direction and determination and so much support.”

After college, Clara wants to work in the Jewish world to help continue to strengthen Jewish communities and make the world a better place.

How do we speak of darkness?

Through light.

T

he night of August 11, 2017 Neo-Nazis marched on the University of Virginia’s residential Lawn carrying torches and chanting “Jews will not replace us.” On August 12, a demonstration called “Unite the Right” became violent in the streets of downtown Charlottesville.

The Anti Defamation League called the event “one of the largest and most violent gatherings in the U.S. in decades.”

The events of August 11 and 12 shook our students and community deeply. And we responded. With a recommitment to repairing the world, Hillel at UVa created events and focused programming this year to help students tackle dialogue, inclusion, intersectionality, equity, and combating antisemitism. But we couldn’t have done it alone.

In the days and weeks following August 11 and 12, we received more than 950 donations from individuals across 45 states and 15 countries. We were overwhelmed by the generosity and outpouring of love directed toward Jewish students at UVa. These are the names of those who, in a moment of darkness for this community, were the light.

n behalf of the Board of Directors of the Brody Jewish Center, Hillel at the University of Virginia, please accept my most sincere and warm appreciation for your contributions and support over the past school year.

As you will see throughout this report, the 2017-18 school year challenged us both as a community and as an institution. Through those challenges, this year also reinforced for students that we are not only a place to celebrate Jewish life, but that we are here to support them as individuals within the University community.

Know that your support has allowed and created those opportunities for our students.

2017-18 was also a landmark year for recognition and change. It is with great pride that I share that in December, the Brody Jewish Center was awarded the Philip H. and Susan Rudd Cohen Outstanding Campus Award from Hillel International, which recognized the thriving community we’ve created on Grounds. I’m also thrilled to share that we have begun our efforts to renovate our historic 1914 building to create a world-class facility that reflects the closeness and personal nature of our Jewish community. I still remember having Shabbat dinners in that very building, cramming rooms wall to wall with tables and students. I’m proud to see that students for years to come will continue, as I did, to spend their days in that building, investigating, and discovering their Judaism.

I’m also extremely proud of our staff. Rabbi Jake Rubin has been a consistent and thoughtful leader of our Hillel.

Our development team has continued to push in nurturing and growing relationships that will help alumni, parents, and stakeholders empower the Jewish future for years to come. Our programming staff continues to innovate and create meaningful opportunities and experiences that satisfy and ignite our students’ intellectual curiosity.

In addition, I’d like to thank the Board of Directors for their continued active engagement and support - as it is truly a pleasure to work alongside them. I would also like to thank Scott Rosen - our Vice President and Treasurer - for his terrific leadership and direction as he leveraged his experience to help us reach a new level of strategic thought in our financial planning and analysis.

This year has been filled with challenging work - but that work is as important and meaningful as ever as we build Hillel and this institution for years to come. As an alumnus doing this work, I could have not asked for a better way to remain involved and give back to an organization that was so vital to myself and others. As President of the Board, it excites me to continue investing in our organization and building it as a sustainable and dynamic home for Jewish life at the University.
