Philosophy Brockton recognizes that learning and life are richest when we are fully present, with ourselves, with one another, and with the moment. This agreement outlines our shared expectations for cell phone use so that our school can remain a space of connection, clarity, and care.
Hours of Applicability of Agreement The cell phone policy, agreement, and expectations apply to cell phone use during the school day, generally considered to be between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.; or from the first scheduled class (if it starts before 8am) until the last scheduled class (if it ends past 4:00pm).
Divisional Distinctions of Agreement It is recognized that students’ needs and responsibilities change as they mature. For this reason, expectations regarding the use of smart devices—such as cell phones, laptops, tablets, and smartwatches—are tailored to different grade levels. Younger students are supported in developing healthy habits and minimizing distractions, while older students are guided toward responsible independence and balance. These age-appropriate rules help ensure that technology enhances, rather than interrupts, the school experience. Junior School (JK - Grade 5) Cell phones are NOT permitted to be used at school by Junior School students unless there is an exceptional situation and there is both parent acknowledgement and teacher/authority permission. If cell phones are required by a Junior School student (e.g., before or after school for required/essential parent approved reasons) they must be securely stored and off/silent during the day. Cell phones should only be accessed in exceptional situations by Junior School students with teacher/authority permission. School phones are available to students for appropriate situations upon request. POD (Grade 6 & 7) Cell phones are NOT permitted to be used during the school day by POD students unless there is teacher/advisor/authority permission. If cell phones are required by a POD student, they must be securely stored and off/silent during the day. Cell phones should only be accessed by POD students with teacher/advisory/authority permission and parameters. School phones are available to students for appropriate situations upon request. 1 out of 3
Grade 8-12 Cell phones are only permitted to be used at school by Grade 8-12 students within certain parameters including but not limited to: ● Cell Phones should generally be “Off/Silent And Away”; they should not be visible during the instructional hours unless a teacher/authority allows their use for instructional purposes. ● If a student does not have their cell phones securely stored away during instructional time, teachers will have the option to collect them. ● Cell phones should not be used in cell-phone free zones: ○ Classrooms: unless used for educational purposes and/or with teacher permission. ○ Hallways: during the breaks in between classes. ○ Examination Areas: Cell phones (and other devices) are strictly prohibited to maintain academic integrity. ○ Bathrooms, Locker Rooms, and Private Areas: Cell phones (and other devices) are strictly prohibited to protect the privacy of all individuals. ● Cell phones can be used by grade 8-12 students during break/recess and during lunch within the following parameters: ○ Only in designated areas (as defined by the school) ○ Only for brief checks of messages/personal matters ○ Only for reasonable purposes that do not violate school expectations ● Cell phones can be used for reasonable purposes by grade 8-12 students at school before 8am or after 4pm.
Grade 11&12 Cell phones may be used in the dedicated grade 11 and 12 only spaces (e.g., grad lounge). However, students are expected to use devices responsibly, setting an example of healthy balance between digital and in-person engagement.
General Reminders Emergency Protocols ● In emergencies, students may use phones in designated safe areas under staff supervision. ● Parents are encouraged to contact the school office for urgent matters during instructional time, rather than texting or calling students directly. Be Responsible: Use your cell phone wisely. Avoid harmful, inappropriate, or distracting content and speak up if you see or hear something concerning. Keep It Silent/Off: Phones must be on silent or off during school hours. No buzzing, ringing, or alarms.

Privacy Matters: No photos, videos, or recordings unless it is appropriate and everyone involved gives their explicit permission. Respect for Others' Devices: Tampering with or using another student’s device is not permitted. Our Shared Commitment: As a community, we uphold the values that shape our learning environment. Students, teachers, and parents/guardians each play a part in building a learning environment where respect, presence, and connection thrive. Acknowledgement and Agreement Brockton School is committed to ongoing monitoring and may adjust expectations as needed to support our students. For further information and detailed guidelines, students are encouraged to refer to the Brockton Senior School Technology Handbook. By signing this agreement, I acknowledge and agree to the Cell Phone expectations and restrictions. I acknowledge that violation of these expectations will result in consequences that may include and may not be limited to the loss of school privileges.
