CANDY tends to have a sweet AND feisty personality. She is somewhat shy but with people she is comfortable she enjoys pets and attention.

However, sometimes she doesn’t. She’s looking for a cat-savvy owner who will let her be herself.

RUBY is a super sweet dog that loves people. She’s affectionate and generally wellmannered. We don’t recommend a home with cats for her. She walks well on a leash and enjoys getting out for walks. .

What makes adopting a senior pet so rewarding as fire breaks out near shelter We adopted Odie, now 13, from BrightSide when he was 9 years old. Nobody really knew much about him as his only owner died and Odie was found in the house after an unknown period of time. All we knew was he had one owner & he wasn't socialized so he didn't do well around new people, dogs, or cats. He sat in the shelter for months and was overlooked due to being a large breed, a senior, and undersocialized.

As soon as we saw his face, we knew we needed to have him. While he isn't going to the dog park, he is: • no longer scared of strangers.

• a lap dog, despite being 115 lbs.

• the best snuggle buddy a person could ask for.

We know you’ve missed it and so have we. Bow Wow Bingo returns Dec. 16 and every Thursday evening at Seventh Street Brew House in Redmond. Be there!

NEWS FROM NOVEMBER’S ANNUAL MEETING Executive director Pat Bowling and board members reported on some of the highlights of the year, the organization’s finances, and its performance compared to other shelters.

Treasurer Megan Fries explained that 2021 to date has seen more bequests than usual, and that net in 2020 was unusually high because the shelter and thrift store closed for 2 months during COVID, reducing expenses, and federal aid was received.

In the board election, Vicki Boudinot was elected to a first term and Beth Palmer, Chris Pearson and Megan Fries all were re-elected. Directors Pat Wallin and Mark Crose retired from the board.

A girl named Subie was wandering downtown amid the excitement, noise and traffic. With little to no hearing and an age of 91, in people years, she must have wondered how she ended up in such a predicament, and how her paws might navigate her wagging tail to safety.

Riding in a cop car usually doesn’t rate a tail wag from any species. Underdogs like Subie, though, have a different plan. Strutting her wiggle-tail and Subie-smile from the end of an officer’s leash, Subie shined when she arrived at Brightside. She wore a pink metal heart on her collar that said “SUBIE” with a local phone number inscribed. Calls from the officer and from BrightSide reached dead ends.

Vet exams and observation showed signs of senior age, physical abnormalities and previous motherhood.

Imagine the headline: “91-year-old deaf mother found wandering the streets of downtown Redmond, picked up by the police, walks into a shelter with a smile on her face.”

After an extra two days on stray-hold, to allow for Subie’s family to find her, Brightside staff deemed her fully adoptable. She had a photoshoot and "resume" created for her new online profile on BrightSide’s web site.

We continued to learn about Subie and her non-hearing capabilities. We incorporated her into play groups and volunteer walks around the shelter while her smile grew daily.

Exactly one month after Subie the Underdog shined a light on Brightside, a new family decided to shine light on Subie. She was adopted on the first day of Brightside’s partnership with Subaru of America and Subaru of Bend for their Subaru Loves Pets Month. Subaru donated $100 for Subie’s adoption, and donated $100 for every pet (dogs and cats) adopted during October, up to $3,100. At BrightSide, 138 pets were adopted in October, following Subie into new homes.

Volunteer of the Year: Barb Stinson Founder of the Bottles & Cans recycling program recognized for her exceptional service Early this year, BrightSide declared 2021 the Year of the Volunteer, an idea suggested by former board member and volunteer Jerry Boysen.

BrightSide is fortunate to have many excellent and dedicated volunteers in all areas of our operations: shelter, thrift store, and the bottles & cans recycling program.

Volunteers make the organization hum and without them there would be no music, so we’ve been singing their praises all year.

Unfortunately, because of COVID, we haven’t been able to host a big volunteer appreciation dinner as we’ve done before. Nonetheless, at a staff meeting in early December BrightSide honored Barb Stinson as our Volunteer of the Year.

Back in 2009, Barb founded BrightSide’s Bottles & Cans recycling program. And she has continued to volunteer in the program, week in and week out, ever since. From its humble beginnings, the effort to collect fordeposit recyclables has grown into a large operation with collection sites throughout Central Oregon, including three in the city of Bend. The program is so large, in fact, that it now generates about 15% of BrightSide’s annual income. It’s a testament to what one determined person with a bright idea can do.
