visual storytelling

We are stories. Everything humans do and experience evolves around some kind of story. It’s the way we contextualize information and experience to make it meaningful. Story is the way that we remember to remember who we are and where we have come from and where we can go.

Design an orihon style folding booklet visualizing the unique personality and character of your interview partner and their relationship to nature, specifically around water. Collect information about them in order to interpret and transform your research into a compelling design using abstract pattern development, storytelling, poetry, quotes, lyrics etc.

emphasis will be placed upon original concept development and the exploration of diverse processes, techniques and methods. (photography, screen printing, xerography…) you will be expected to experiment and explore, thereby expanding on your visualizing skills.

P1

1. Where are you a local? San Jose, CA 2. What color do you most resonate with? Why? Pink and any shade of blue, but more so blue because there is a lot of meaning behind it. I think of the vastness of the sky and ocean. 3. How do you access your intuition? I am still working on listening to intuition, but I usually access my intuition by quieting everyone else so I can truly listen to myself. 4. How has life changed you since Covid? It was a really big transition. I had to grow a lot and it changed how I felt about myself and the world around me. I definitely have a better outlook on things now than I did before.

5. What invitations are you offering to the world? I want to show people the beauty of the world, that’s why I went into graphic design and photography. I want people to be reminded of everyday beauty; you don’t need to somewhere else to find beauty, it is everywhere. I want to make people’s lives better instead of hindering them. 6. Tell me a transforming experience you’ve had in nature. Swimming in Hawaii by myself, a big turtle swam past me and I was really amazed. I felt like it meant something; it felt like a sign from the unvierse that every thing would be okay. 7. What makes you feel connected with the world? Going on walks in nature where I can appreciate the flowers and trees and watch people enjoying their lives, it’s a great feeling. 8. How do you respond to restrictions you encounter? Sometimes I let them get to me, but I don’t let them stop me. I’ll feel sad, but then solve it.

9. When do you experience fluidity? When I’m drawing or creating art, and am just in the flow. Work no longer feels work, and I don’t realize how much time has passed. 10. What are some familiar rituals you practice? Sometimes when I’m taking showers at night, I’ll light two candles and meditate. It feels relaxing to take care of myself and my body. 11. How do you quiet your mind? By meditating, observing nature and going to the beach. I always feel good after swimming. 12. What is one thing you want me to know about you? I am actually not quiet, sometimes I have a hard time putting thoughts into words. My spirit animal would be a horse or jaguar.

what worked well

The overall design really encapsulated Cynthia’s personality and story. I feel as though I was able to emmulate a style that gave the piece a very soft, and gentle look.

what I would change

More elements! There were a lot of things I wish I could have included, but it was difficult to render them in a way that actually fit in. I would also want to integrate the text more and play around with the scaling/ positioning of the type.

design

what I learned

I learned how to represent someone visually! This is a format I had never experimented with before and I learned how to tell a story through a singular, cohesive art piece.

creative work reaches deep into our intuitive and unconscious minds, into our hearts and feelings. the sea change design process helped to define your calling and its embedded meaning.

now, you will examine the ways in which this abstract idea can be interpreted and represented in visual form, offering clarity, embedded meaning, as well as understanding to the viewer.

stay away from literal translation and use metaphors and storytelling for your design. emphasis will be placed upon original concept development and the exploration of diverse processes, techniques and methods. you will be expected to experiment and explore, thereby expanding on your visualizing skills.

visualize a highly abstract idea that is sourced from your growing awareness of the deeper aspects of yourself in your own personal voice by exploring design elements, typography and diverse processes.

what worked well

The motifs and overall design represent the core of my intention. I was surprised at how well I was able to abstract the three figures, which orginally started out as photos of model Cara Delevigne.

what I would change

I would integrate my intention more and play around with the scaling in an effort to emphasize the key words more. I would also want to explore a different calendar format.

what I learned

I learned how to better streamline my work across different platforms. and mesh varying photo-making processes together. For this piece, I utilized Procreate, Photoshop, and Illustrator. I also realized the importance of paying attention to the color mode!

consider the following relationships:

• water literacy (education)

• water & social justice

• water & culture

• water & ecology (biodiversity / climate change / indigenous & emerging technologies)

each group member chooses a role:

• researcher

• recorder

• materials manager

• reporter

• facilitator

• timekeeper

mutual respect, active listening/ note taking, equal time to talk, and empathy are extremely important.

in people globally do not have access to safe drinking water Severe water shortage predicted ect over billion people by 2040. In order to prevent this from happening we must partner together to make change.

How can we partner with our world to create universal access to clean water so we can contribute to the healing of our planet across all generations? Atlaua aims to build awareness surroundig water inequities and strives to provide solutions for the global water crisis. We hope spark change worldwide educating younger generations at K-12 schools about water accessibility and preservation. Our artifacts goal to influence generations, cultures, and the blue planet overtime.

OUR MISSION

I am proud that we were able to design a cohesive brand that is meaningful and healing. We worked really well as a group and every member was extremely flexible and willing to adapt. We created a brand that speaks to our intention.

Website The sculpture of faucet with droplet falling out of simple yet powerful representation of the importance of water conservation. When users click on region, the droplet will fill with water. clearer droplet represents more access to clean, safe water, whereas region that renders browner droplet equates to less access to water. The droplet falling from the faucet emphasizes the significance of even the smallest amounts of water, highlighting the need for responsible usage and conservation. The sculpture also draws attention to the global issue of water scarcity, reminding us of the limited availability of fresh water around the world. page 5 Artifact

what I would change

I would want to make it even more cohesive by ensuring all of the colors were rendered correctly. I would also include more unifying details and play with the hierarchy or scale of each individual page.

what I learned

I learned how to create a brand from scratch! I also gained experience working on a singular design project with a team–something I had never done before. Communication is key and it is important to share your thoughts while also listening and learning from others.

INEQUALITIES IN ACCESS poeople globally do not have access to safe drinking water. Severe water shortages are expected to ect over billion people by 2040. We are expected to run out of fresh water by 2050. IMPACT ON WOMEN The water crisis disproportionately impacts women. Lack of water and sanitiation lock women into cycle of poverty. Goals and work outside of traditional roles become harder to pursue when they’re forced to spend time collecting water. The water crisis also makes women more vulnerable abuse and illnesses. DETRIMENTAL TO CHILDREN Children who are responsible for collecting water for their families have less time to learn and play. Poor santiaiton from the water crisis keeps children–especially girls–from going to school. A RACIAL PROBLEM People of color and other minority groups are disproportionately a ected by the water crisis. Predominantly Black communities or cities are more likely to lack access to clean water. causes ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICE There is disproportionate placement toxic hazards minority and/or low-income areas. People of color are often excluded from environmental planning. There have been destruction of many traditional communities. BURDEN OF COLLECTION Women and children are often responsible for collecting water for their families. This task can be dangerous, time-consuming, and physically demanding. CLIMATE CHANGE Do we really need to say anymore than that? Higher water temperatures, more frequent floods and droughts are projected to exacerbate many forms of water pollution and worsen the water crisis. NATIVE KNOWLEDGE Partnering with indigenous communities and amplifying their voices can help solve the water crisis and beyond. They’re considered stewards of our environment and learning from them vital to our survival. solutions ADVOCACY Advocating for systemic change within the government is crucial. Attend community hearings, reach out to congress, protest, and speak up against laws, projects, etc. that worsen the water crisis. EDUCATION & RESOURCES More education relating to consumption and conservation of water, as well as water injustices. Make water test kits and resources for clean water more available and accessible. Resources like our artifact, which teaches about water accessibility to build awareness and spark change. outcome HEALING & HAPPINESS Women have more time to pursue things beyond their traditional roles. Children have more time for school and play.
