Color Most Influential Men 2025

Page 1

Dear Readers,

It is with great pride and deep gratitude that I welcome you to the inaugural edition of COLOR Magazine’s Most Influential Men of Color. This publication marks an important milestone for our community and for our mission: to illuminate the leaders whose work, integrity, and impact push us all forward.

Our inaugural honorees represent the very best of leadership in its truest sense. They are not only achievers; they are mentors, builders, and catalysts for change. They lead with a level of resilience born from lived experience and a vision shaped by hope for a more equitable future. Their stories remind us that influence is not measured by accolades alone, but by the hearts and minds a leader touches along the way.

My hope is that as you read through this first edition, you feel the same inspiration we felt while curating it. May the stories shared here reinforce what is possible, energize your own leadership journey, and remind you that every barrier crossed creates a pathway for those who will follow.

Thank you for joining us for this inaugural celebration. And thank you for being part of a community dedicated to elevating excellence, equity, and opportunity.

With gratitude,

KEVIN MATTA

United Way of Rhode Island

Senior Director of People & Culture

Kevin Matta is an award-winning leader and prominent advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, with more than 15 years of experience across the nonprofit, healthcare, and financial sectors. He currently serves as the Senior Director of People & Culture at United Way of Rhode Island and is the President of Diversity and Inclusion Professionals (DAIP).

A global public speaker, Kevin draws on his deep expertise in human resources and DEI to help individuals and organizations unlock the transformative power of inclusive leadership. His dynamic presence as a keynote speaker, emcee, and panelist has been featured on television, podcasts, and conferences worldwide. He is also a featured author in both Spanish and English, contributing thought leadership that bridges cultures and communities.

Kevin’s work is rooted in a belief that inclusion is not just a value—but a catalyst for innovation, belonging, and systemic change.

Can you share a pivotal moment in your journey that shaped the leader you are today?

Early in my career, I unknowingly built a relationship with a senior executive who later became a mentor and sponsor. That experience taught me the power of generosity in leadership—access and opportunity should be given freely, not earned through status. I lead with that same principle: open doors for others, just as they were opened for me.

What motivates you to keep pushing boundaries in your work or community?

I’m driven by the persistent inequities I see—whether in access, language, or identity. My lived experience fuels my commitment to dismantling barriers. I’ve seen what injustice looks like up close, and I’m determined to ensure others don’t have to.

What challenges have you faced on your path to success, and how did you overcome them?

I’ve faced systemic hardship—family displacement, deportation, and financial barriers to education. I could have accepted a narrative of limitation, but I chose resilience. My mindset is simple: life requires both struggle and strength. I meet adversity with grit, faith, and the belief that every challenge carries the seed of growth.

Looking back, what would you tell your younger self just starting out in your career?

Be patient—growth takes time, and every lesson will arrive when it’s meant to. And take the time o . Rest is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. The work will wait, but your well-being shouldn’t.
