Bridge Builders Foundation Scholarship Winners!

JSSK is proud to support Bridge Builder’s mission to remove barriers and uplift young people by fostering their growth and empowering them to create brighter futures.

The Bridge Builder

An old man going a lone highway, Came, at the evening cold and gray, To a chasm vast and deep and wide. Through which was flowing a sullen tide

The old man crossed in the twilight dim, The sullen stream had no fear for him; But he turned when safely on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide.

“Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim near, “You are wasting your strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day, You never again will pass this way; You’ve crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build this bridge at evening tide?”

The builder lifted his old gray head; “Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said, “There followed after me to-day A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been as naught to me

To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be; He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him!”

Thriving Under The Influence Mentor Program

Positive African American Youth Development

African American and Latinx boys face a myriad of systemic and societal challenges. The Bridge Builders Foundation is dedicated to enhancing resources in communities of color by providing essential services that are lacking or insufficient. Positive youth development plays a critical role in supporting AfricanAmerican youth as they navigate a social, political, and historical landscape entrenched in systemic inequities and racism.

Our approach incorporates various elements outlined in the Positive African American Youth Development (Grills, 2015). We focus on Racial Socialization, Civic and Community Engagement, and Future Orientation. Through weekly sessions, we delve into topics such as resilience, the complex history of racial discrimination, anger management, surviving encounters with law enforcement, and promoting healthy living. Our aim is to instill a sense

of agency, belonging, competence, and empowerment in our youth.

Men from diverse disciplines and age groups openly share their real-life experiences, addressing the unique issues and challenges faced by youth of color. This process begins with imparting pro-social values and mentors who serve as role models, leading to meaningful two-way dialogue and engagement. Certified lead mentors in Healing Centered Engagement guide the mentoring engagement. Participating youth report increased confidence, agency, and benefit from the engagement, encouragement, and experiences shared by older men of color.

Participating students enjoy the benefits of structured in-person group sessions, individualized mentor support, virtual math tutoring, weekly virtual mentoring sessions, and bi-monthly incentive-based

community enrichment field trips to educational and recreational venues. Many also serve as “Youth Ambassadors,” receiving payment for mentoring, tutoring, and coaching younger students within their communities. This opportunity provides valuable financial resources, work experience, and a structured introduction to civic engagement and community service.

Studies demonstrate that each dollar invested in quality youth mentoring yields a three-dollar return in societal benefits. BBF has forged strong relationships with local fraternities, faithbased organizations, and community service groups, contributing thousands of volunteer hours to amplify BBF’s reach, resources, and access for participating youth.

ALL Bridge Builders Foundation Programs are provided to youth FREE of charge!

Bridge Builders Joins Ready to Rise (R2R) Phase II as Alumni Mentor

Bridge Builders Foundation (BBF) was honored to join over 40 community leaders as part of the Ready to Rise (R2R) Phase II Alumni. This initiative, hosted by the California Community Foundation, aims to mentor incoming grantees and further the mission of fostering positive youth development.

As a previous recipient of the R2R Phase I grant, BBF is now able to share its invaluable expertise and lessons learned with the new cohort of grantees. The R2R program is a groundbreaking LA County public-private partnership that integrates cultural responsiveness, positive youth development, and holistic services into the juvenile justice system.

One of BBF’s flagship initiatives, Thrive Under the Influence, was relaunched under the R2R Phase I grant. Initially a school-based mentoring program, TUTI has since expanded countywide, meeting both on campus and after school for students attending charter or alternative schools. This program exemplifies BBF’s commitment to nurturing today’s youth into tomorrow’s leaders through comprehensive youth development programs.

As an organizational mentor in the R2R Phase II program, BBF will be pivotal in guiding and supporting new grantees by sharing the best practices and strategies developed through TUTI and other initiatives.

BBF Elevates Young Voices at it’s Youth Ambassador Advisory Council Meeting

The Bridge Builders Foundation (BBF) hosted its Elevate Youth California Youth Listening Session, bringing together young people to share their experiences, goals, and ideas. This event marked the launch of BBF’s Youth Ambassador Advisory Council, empowering youth to shape the future direction of programs.

Youth participants shared personal stories, built connections with peers, and began advising on program development. Their discussions centered on creating initiatives resonating with their cultural backgrounds and lived experiences.

“We value our young people’s unique perspectives and experiences,” said Jamecca Marshall, Bridge Builders’ Deputy Executive Director.

“Their input will help us create programs that truly matter to them.”

Josh Abrams, a college graduate and former BBF program participant now working at BBF, emphasized: “Allowing youth to express themselves and shape the programs designed for us is so important to our growth and leadership development.”

The event exemplified BBF’s commitment to empowering young people through culturally responsive and youth-centered practices. By amplifying their voices, BBF ensures its programs remain grounded in diverse communities’ real experiences and needs.

BUILDING INCLUSIVITY:

Addressing Racial Disparities in Hate Crimes in LA County

Hate, racism, and oppression have a damaging impact on our society, leading to serious consequences. Instances of hate crimes are increasing across ALL COMMUNITIES Leaders at local and state levels nationwide are acknowledging racism as a pressing public health crisis. While this recognition is a crucial first step towards promoting racial equity and justice, it must be backed by the allocation of resources and strategic initiatives.

Our combined efforts should focus on dismantling ignorance, indifference, and, most importantly, hate. The essential initial step is to promote tolerance, understanding, and respect for our diversities. BY WORKING TOGETHER, we can create a society where people can work, live, pray, and play in peace, free from fear and harm. To comprehensively address the issue, collaborative efforts are necessary, involving law enforcement, community leaders, education, and policy changes.

Bridge Builders Foundation is committed to creating a more equitable and inclusive society through initiatives like the “Stop The Hate” program, actively combating hate crimes and promoting respect and understanding for everyone. As part of this effort, they’ve also introduced a special T-shirt design to raise awareness and encourage unity in the fight against hate.

HATE CANNOT DRIVE OUT HATE, ONLY LOVE CAN DO THAT.”

Bridge Builders Foundation Intensive Supplemental Engagement

Last year, Bridge Builders Foundation launched a 10-week educational support program in partnership with Tom Bradley Global Awareness Elementary School, a Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) “priority” campus. The program focused on 15 students in grades 3–5, offering targeted instruction in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math for four hours each Saturday, just ahead of statewide testing.

Why This Matters

Students of color—especially from economically disadvantaged backgrounds—continue to face deep educational gaps in LAUSD. Only 30% of Black students and 35% of Latinx students meet ELA standards, with even lower numbers in Math. Despite district-wide efforts like the Black Student Achievement Program, many students still struggle without direct, hands-on support.

Bridge Builders’ Approach

Bridge Builders Foundation stepped in with a proven model focused on:

• Culturally relevant teaching

• Social-emotional support

• Evidence-based strategies tailored to boost academic skills and test readiness

The instructional team included a credentialed teacher and two paid college mentors. Students received high-quality books, test prep materials, incentives, and mentorship to strengthen both academic skills and self-confidence.

How It Worked

RACES

Method

(ELA): Teaches students to Restate, Answer, Cite evidence, Explain, and Summarize

CGI Math (UCLA-based): Emphasizes deep problem-solving using real-world math applications

These structured lessons were delivered through small-group work and 1-on-1 coaching, helping students build stamina, strategy, and skills for standardized testing.

Results That Speak Volumes

• 75% of students improved in ELA, and 88% improved in Math

• Fourth Graders saw average gains of +24 points (ELA) and +101 points (Math)

• Fifth Graders gained +92 points (ELA) and +71 points (Math)

• Students showed nearly two-grade levels of growth in just 10 weeks

Beyond Test Scores

Parents and students reported increased confidence, focus, and excitement about learning. This pilot not only moved the needle academically—it shifted mindsets and future outlooks.

Looking Ahead

Bridge Builders’ I-SE model provides a clear roadmap for supporting underserved students with the intensity and intention needed to close achievement gaps—one Saturday at a time.

The Value of Volunteerism

Volunteerism is vital to youth leadership, mentoring, and development programs, offering young people invaluable guidance and inspiration. Volunteerism plays a key role at Bridge Builders Foundation (BBF), with over 75 dedicated volunteers donating more than 5,000 hours annually. The current volunteer rate in California is $36 per hour, translating into over $180,000 in contributed service, demonstrating the immense value volunteers bring to the foundation. This is not just a number but a testament to the impact we are making on the lives of our youth. BBF’s volunteers come from various industries, including architecture, engineering, business, law, finance, law enforcement, and clergy. Their expertise provides youth with critical insights into professional success and personal growth, extending guidance beyond what is learned in classrooms. These mentors open doors to career opportunities, internships, and life experiences that might otherwise be inaccessible.

As Alvin Trotter, Jr., a BBF Board Member and Sr. Director in the construction industry, notes, ”Volunteerism is a direct way to create change and impact the lives of our youth.” BBF also incorporates college students as near-peer mentors, a strategy that fosters a multi-layered engagement environment and gives us hope for the future. These younger mentors bridge the gap between youth and seasoned professionals, offering relatable guidance while providing support that is closer to the lived experiences of younger mentees.

This layered approach ensures BBF’s youth have access to mentors at various stages of their careers, contributing diverse perspectives and fostering deeper connections. Additionally, the social capital shared by BBF’s volunteers is invaluable. Beyond mentoring, they provide youth access to career paths and internships, leveraging their networks to offer young people the tools, knowledge, and connections needed for lasting success. This illustrates the profound impact of volunteerism on building brighter futures for youth.

Bridge Builders Foundation provides LA County students (Boys & Girls Grades 6-12) with enriching experiences that foster both academic growth and essential life skills. Through a combination of focused learning and diverse enrichment courses, our program empowers students to:

• Strengthen academic skills

• Engage in cultural, social, and emotional learning

• Build essential life skills such as financial literacy, public speaking, and self-confidence

• Connect with community professionals and explore diverse career opportunities

• Participate in educational field trips

Dr. Ernest E. Just Youth Science Program

Exposing, Inspiring, and Supporting Diversity in STEM

To maintain its global leadership, the United States must prioritize domestic investment and foster a robust, diverse, and talented STEM workforce. STEM fields have revolutionized various aspects of human life, and careers in these fields which offer rapid growth and high salaries in the US.

The Bridge Builders Foundation (BBF) has taken up the mission of exposing, inspiring, and supporting ethnic minority youth and women in STEM studies and careers through their Saturday Science Academy and Summer Marine Science Program. Alarming statistics from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) indicate that only 18% of black students scored proficient or above in STEM, while students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds scored 28 points lower than their more affluent peers.

BBF offers an immersive program designed to expand access, success, and diversity in STEM. Through classroom instruction, handson demonstrations, and field explorations of local science facilities and worksites, students engage in STEM content, develop their knowledge, and understand the relevance of STEM in their daily lives.

One of BBF’s primary objectives is to dismantle the stigma associated with STEM and empower ethnic minority youth to pursue STEM careers and academic paths with confidence and a sense of belonging. Over 200 hours of instruction cover a broad range of life, physical, and earth sciences, with guidance from minority and women professors, field practitioners, and mentors.

BBF’s program fosters rigorous and purposeful learning experiences in an informal, out-ofschool format. Research indicates that STEM success often begins outside the classroom, with only 13% of students learning about STEM from teachers and nearly 20% teaching themselves. For communities of color, informal STEM exposure is crucial, as it provides authentic learning opportunities beyond traditional classroom settings.

The BBF program thrives through strong partnerships with corporations, philanthropic organizations, and the community. Classroom sessions and hands-on activities take place at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). Instruction and curriculum development are led by professionals from USC College of Environmental Sciences, UCSD/Scripps Institute, CSUDH, and other esteemed institutions.

In addition to campus-based learning, students enjoy real-life engagement through instructional visits and field trips to corporate partners such as American Honda Motor Company, Infineon, Metro, Hitachi, Southern California Edison, and Southern California Gas.

The Saturday Science Academy runs from January to July, while the summer marine science program spans three consecutive weekends in August and culminates in multiple days of immersive experiences at college campuses like UCSD/Scripps Institute in La Jolla and USC Wrigley Center on Catalina Island. These experiences create lasting memories and fuel a passion for STEM in the hearts of the participants.

Outside of his fraternity work, Lewis has built a long-standing career in the aerospace industry, where he has worked for the past 38 years. Known for his discipline, accountability, and servant leadership style, he approaches every role with integrity, clear purpose, and a drive to elevate those around him. He has also served the community as a former Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Weingart Aquatic Center YMCA in South Los Angeles.

He resides in Los Angeles with his wife Vicky. They are the proud parents of two sons: Adisa, a U.S. Army Captain with a master’s degree from Fresno State, and Wyatt, a high school student.

Ricky Lewis credits his parents, Harvey and Ethel, for shaping his values of honesty, respect, and hard work. For him, leadership is not about titles— it’s about love, legacy, and lifting others. His journey is a testament to faith in action, a deep commitment to community, and an unwavering devotion to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

2025 COMMUNITY CHAMPION AWARD HONOREE

Dr. Robert K. Ross, MD

Dr. Robert K. Ross served as President and CEO of The California Endowment (TCE) for 24 transformative years, redefining health philanthropy in California and setting a national standard for equity-driven leadership. A pediatrician and public health leader, Dr. Ross brought passion, strategy, and moral clarity to a foundation rooted in equity.

Since 2000, he led TCE to invest over $1 billion in advancing health justice. His signature initiative, Building Healthy Communities, launched in 14 regions, achieved over 1,200 policy and systems changes by centering young people, place, race, and power. Under his guidance, TCE supported health coverage for undocumented residents, criminal justice reform, grassroots youth-led campaigns like Schools Not Prisons, and the elevation of community voice as a force for change Dr. Ross previously served as San Diego County’s Director of Health and Human Services and Philadelphia’s Public Health Commissioner. He helped launch Covered California and chaired LA County’s Task Force on Alternatives to Incarceration, laying a roadmap for health-based justice reform.

In 2023, Dr. Ross led TCE to issue a historic $300 million social bond—the first of its kind by a foundation in California—to invest in power-building, multiracial coalitions, and social justice infrastructure. As a capstone to his tenure, TCE’s LA campus will be expanded into the Robert K. Ross Center for Hope and Healing, a community space offering housing, health, training, and arts.

A national voice for equity, Dr. Ross has served on numerous boards, including the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pediatrics, recipient of the Council on Foundations’ Distinguished Grantmaker Award, and a 2023 Distinguished Visiting Professor at Stanford.

More than a philanthropist, Dr. Ross is a servant leader driven by faith, humanity, and hope. As he says, “It’s not about charity. It has to be about change.”
