Bridge Builders Foundation (BBF) is a 501c3 non-profit incorporated in 1998. Over the last two decades, BBF has emerged as a trusted, and well-respected resource to the African American community of Greater Los Angeles. BBF currently serves over 500 youth of color annually through one of three (3) targeted programs, and several hundred more members of the community through their targeted initiatives (healthcare awareness and financial literacy).
Bridge Builders Foundation serves several thousand members of the community annually through its three (3) Dedicated Programs (STEM, Mentor, and Scholars) and two (2) community initiatives (healthcare awareness and financial literacy).
In addition, Bridge Builders Foundation, through its network of community-based organizations and stakeholders provides for and/or arranges for the delivery of many other services and resources to underrepresented communities of color. We are “community influencers” and strive to be a social impact organization leveraging relationships and strengthening the capacity of smaller grassroots organizations.
Bridge Builders Foundation has emerged as a vehicle for change, and a platform for collective community engagement. When passionate, purposeful and committed people come together, the possibilities are limitless. We welcome VOLUNTEERS as chaperones, subject matter experts, and community advocates.
Please join us. It takes a village, and our village is expanding.
Building a Brighter Future
The Bridge Builders Foundation, a beacon of hope and opportunity for over 20 years, is thrilled to announce the creation of “The Big Scholarship Book.” This groundbreaking resource is designed to be a game-changer for African American students facing significant financial barriers to higher education. More than just a compilation, “The Big Scholarship Book” will be a comprehensive guide, offering students an extensive list of scholarships and grants alongside crucial details like eligibility requirements, application processes, and deadlines.
This one-stop resource will eliminate the overwhelming and often discouraging task of searching for financial aid scattered across countless websites and applications. With the cost of college posing a significant challenge, “The Big Scholarship Book” will provide much-needed financial resources, helping students and families navigate the daunting landscape of paying for higher education. This resource is rooted in over two decades of impactful programs and services that reflect our commitment to empowering African American youth. Each year, we touch the lives of hundreds of students and community members, with over 90% qualifying as low and moderateincome (LMI) and all our partner schools designated as Title 1. Notably, 75% of our STEM program participants and 80% of our Scholars Program students fall into the LMI category, underscoring our focus on fostering academic excellence within underserved communities.
‘The Big Scholarship Book’ represents a significant step in promoting educational equity and creating brighter futures. We ensure that deserving, often overlooked students receive the education and opportunities they deserve. This book is a testament to the collective commitment of our community to bridge the gap and build a brighter future for African American students, making the seemingly impossible possible.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
Every scholarship has its own procedures and requirements. Even if you’ve applied for scholarships in the past, don’t assume the process is the same for every award. Even specific awards may change their procedure from year-to-year.
This book includes information on how to obtain funding, necessary to pay for their educational goals. All the following scholarships are listed in alphabetical order of scholarship name. Each listing provides details for you to determine your eligibility.
First, you need to know whether the scholarship deadline has already passed. If it has, you can add the scholarship to your list of prospective awards to apply for next year.
If the deadline hasn’t passed yet, look at the scholarship eligibility requirements. These should show you what the scholarship committee is looking for in its applicants. Make sure you fit these requirements before applying. If you’re not sure you qualify, you should email the scholarship provider. Try to do this sooner rather than later because the scholarship review committee may receive a large influx of emails.
If you’re applying for a lot of scholarships, one of the most helpful things you can do is create a spreadsheet that will track every award. Scholarships can be confusingespecially if you’re applying for dozens of different ones. If you can stay organized, you’ll be less stressed and more able to focus on the applications.
CREATING A SCHOLARSHIP PROFILE
When writing your scholarship resume, there are a few critical areas that you need to cover:
PERSONAL INFORMATION
This includes your name, location, and contact information (usually email and phone number).
EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
What schools have you attended? Where are the schools located? This also includes your academic history including GPA, class rank, notable AP or honors classes, and test scores.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Include specific organizations, dates when you were involved in the organization, leadership positions, and a brief description of the impact you made.
INVOLVEMENT OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL
Involvement outside of school can include your work and volunteering history Again, be specific about organizations/companies, dates, positions, and a brief description of the work or impact.
HONORS AND AWARDS
Generally, we recommend that students should only include honors and awards that were received in high school.
WHAT NOT TO INCLUDE IN A SCHOLARSHIP RESUME
The biggest mistake that I see students making on their resumes is including information that is outdated. If you are a high school senior, you should not include any experiences or information from middle school or earlier.
Remember, the scholarship committee is using your resume to predict the future as they imagine the type of impact that you will make in the world as a college student and alum. The most recent information will give them more relevant information to see who you will become.
OBTAINING TOP-NOTCH RECOMMENDATIONS
One of the first challenges in applying for a scholarship is providing a letter of recommendation. This document is essential, proving you are a deserving student. To obtain a top-notch recommendation letter, consider these steps:
Identify the Right Recommenders:
Choose individuals who know you well and can speak to your academic achievements, character, and potential. Ideal recommenders include teachers, professors, former employers, or mentors who have a comprehensive understanding of your abilities and accomplishments.
Provide Context:
If you are applying for a specific scholarship, such as one at Howard University, ensure that your recommender is aware of this. Mention the scholarship and the institution at the start of your letter, and ensure that the letter is addressed to the appropriate people or committee.
Understand the Requirements:
Many organizations have specific guidelines for recommendation letters, including what should be included and how the letter should be formatted. These requirements are often updated regularly and can be accessed via the organization’s online platform.
Use Online Platforms:
After creating an account on the scholarship’s online platform, you can invite your recommenders to log in and submit their letters directly. This process ensures that the letters are received in the correct format and by the deadline.
Provide Necessary Information:
Make sure your recommenders have all the information they need to write a strong letter. This includes your resume, a list of your achievements, details about the scholarship, and any specific points you would like them to highlight.
Follow Up:
Politely remind your recommenders of the submission deadline and check in to ensure they have submitted the letter. A gentle reminder can help keep the process on track.
By following these steps, you can secure high-quality recommendation letters that will strengthen your scholarship application and help you stand out as a deserving candidate. Now lets get started!
Wishing You the Best of Success!
