“Perservering Against the Odds”

The Bridge Builder
An old man going a lone highway, Came, at the evening cold and gray, To a chasm vast and deep and wide. Through which was flowing a sullen tide
The old man crossed in the twilight dim, The sullen stream had no fear for him; But he turned when safely on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide.
“Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim near, “You are wasting your strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day, You never again will pass this way; You’ve crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build this bridge at evening tide?”
The builder lifted his old gray head; “Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said, “There followed after me to-day A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been as naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be; He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him!”

JACKSONPRESIDENT’S WELCOME
I’m delighted to extend a warm welcome on behalf of the Bridge Builders Foundation Board of Directors, staff, and the dynamic community of over 700 youth actively participating in our programs.
Tonight, we convene for our 42nd Salute and Scholars Banquet, a significant event to honor community leaders for their impactful contributions and to support and celebrate the academic pursuits of African American male scholars. This year’s cohort of scholars is remarkable, showcasing exceptional academic prowess, civic engagement, and ambitious goals worthy of recognition and support.

Despite prevailing negative misrepresentations, our young black men persist in excelling and defying stereotypes. We must actively and collectively reshape the narrative of our young Black men to one that accurately reflects the strivings within our community. The accomplishments of Bridge Builders scholars, past and present, speak volumes. Our scholar’s six-year college completion rate surpasses 75%, is twice the national average for African American males, and exceeds all other cohorts across race and gender, our impact is undeniable.
At the Bridge Builders Foundation, our mission is clear: to close the achievement gap for African American youth and communities. Our approach encompasses a holistic engagement in the “change ecosystem,” including program development and implementation, policy and systems advocacy, and fostering collective community engagement. The past year, 2023-2024, has been marked by tremendous growth, and we eagerly anticipate and pray for continued blessings.

Thriving Under The Influence Mentor Program
Positive African American Youth Development
African American and Latinx boys face a myriad of systemic and societal challenges. The Bridge Builders Foundation is dedicated to enhancing resources in communities of color by providing essential services that are lacking or insufficient. Positive youth development plays a critical role in supporting AfricanAmerican youth as they navigate a social, political, and historical landscape entrenched in systemic inequities and racism. Our approach incorporates various elements outlined in the Positive African American Youth Development (Grills, 2015). We focus on Racial Socialization, Civic and Community Engagement, and Future Orientation. Through weekly sessions, we delve into topics such as resilience, the complex history of racial discrimination, anger management, surviving encounters with law enforcement, and promoting healthy living. Our aim is to instill a sense
of agency, belonging, competence, and empowerment in our youth.
Men from diverse disciplines and age groups openly share their real-life experiences, addressing the unique issues and challenges faced by youth of color. This process begins with imparting pro-social values and mentors who serve as role models, leading to meaningful two-way dialogue and engagement. Certified lead mentors in Healing Centered Engagement guide the mentoring engagement. Participating youth report increased confidence, agency, and benefit from the engagement, encouragement, and experiences shared by older men of color.
Participating students enjoy the benefits of structured in-person group sessions, individualized mentor support, virtual math tutoring, weekly virtual mentoring sessions, and bi-monthly incentive-based

community enrichment field trips to educational and recreational venues. Many also serve as “Youth Ambassadors,” receiving payment for mentoring, tutoring, and coaching younger students within their communities. This opportunity provides valuable financial resources, work experience, and a structured introduction to civic engagement and community service.
Studies demonstrate that each dollar invested in quality youth mentoring yields a three-dollar return in societal benefits. BBF has forged strong relationships with local fraternities, faithbased organizations, and community service groups, contributing thousands of volunteer hours to amplify BBF’s reach, resources, and access for participating youth.

Infineon & BBF: Partners in Corporate and Community Responsibility
As a socially responsible company, Infineon Americas (IFAM) actively supports the Bridge Builders Foundation (BBF) mission through its employee volunteer efforts, hosted events and monetary donation.
IFAM tailored a STEM event that introduced 100 Bridge Builder elementary, middle and high school students to the world of semiconductors and to possibly envision a future working in the fields, where salaries range in the six-figures.
“I love volunteering for BBF and being a supporter to this organization and to so many wonderful kids.” Said Omekia Snider IFAM’s Vice President of Tax, who volunteers several Saturdays each month in support of BBF programs. “I enjoy talking to the children about what Infineon does and how we positively impact the environment and our community.”
Over the years, IFAM has also provided monetary support for BBF’s renowned Start to Finish Scholarship program, providing to African American male students one at Cal State Fullerton and another at UC Santa Barbara. Bridge Builder was also recognized in the Best Engagement category for IFAM’s new Corporate Citizenship Recognition Awards.

UCLA School of Medicine Collaborates to Inspire Future Black + Brown Medicine
UCLA School of Medicine, Department of Urology recently partnered with the Bridge Builders Foundation to host 75 aspiring King-Drew Medical Magnet High School students on campus. The inspiring educational trip gave young minds the unique opportunity to explore the diverse medical careers firsthand. The day-long event ignited students’ curiosity and enthusiasm and gave them all an experience they won’t soon forget.
The success of this event wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of Dr. Kymora Scotland, who coordinated and led the engagement, and Dr. Mark Litwin, Department Chair at the Department of Urlogy. After an engaging presentation on medical careers by esteemed Department of Urlogy. medical professionals, students were allowed to engage in hands-on experimentation, delving into surgical techniques, including sutures and computer-assisted surgery. This immersive experience allowed the students to understand the precision and innovation involved in modern medicine, while they gained valuable skills from expert instructors.
To end the day, students took a campus tour to explore the vibrant UCLA community. The Department of Urology also generously provided a hearty

lunch and thoughtful gift packages for each student. The Department of Urology’s collaboration with the Bridge Builders Foundation is an ongoing partnership that provides Black and Brown high school students with programming offering invaluable insights into the various medical career opportunities and the academic preparation necessary for success.
Additionally, the Department of Urology regularly provides instructors for BBF’s Saturday Science Camp programming.

BUILDING INCLUSIVITY:
Addressing Racial Disparities in Hate Crimes in LA County
Hate, racism, and oppression have a damaging impact on our society, leading to serious consequences. Instances of hate crimes are increasing across ALL COMMUNITIES Leaders at local and state levels nationwide are acknowledging racism as a pressing public health crisis. While this recognition is a crucial first step towards promoting racial equity and justice, it must be backed by the allocation of resources and strategic initiatives.
Our combined efforts should focus on dismantling ignorance, indifference, and, most importantly, hate. The essential initial step is to promote tolerance, understanding, and respect for our diversities. BY WORKING TOGETHER, we can create a society where people can work, live, pray, and play in peace, free from fear and harm. To comprehensively address the issue, collaborative efforts are necessary, involving law enforcement, community leaders, education, and policy changes.
Bridge Builders Foundation is committed to creating a more equitable and inclusive society through initiatives like the “Stop The Hate” program, actively combating hate crimes and promoting respect and understanding for everyone. As part of this effort, they’ve also introduced a special T-shirt design to raise awareness and encourage unity in the fight against hate.
HATE CANNOT DRIVE OUT HATE, ONLY LOVE CAN DO THAT.”

Youth and College Ambassador Initiative
Bridge Builders Foundation, has partnered with Los Angeles Unified and Long Beach Unified School Districts to provide expanded educational support for targeted youth.
Through the Read Aloud Partnership (RAP), BBF hires college students (College Ambassadors) to work on elementary school campuses during school hours and read with youth in small groups to strengthen their language skills and build confidence.
During shared book reading, children learn to recognize letters, learn story structure, and experience increased phonological awareness and literacy conventions such as syntax and grammar. In addition, reading aloud increases vocabulary, teaches youth about peer relations and coping strategies, and builds self-esteem and general world knowledge.
This engagement is a supplement to the Youth Ambassador Program, where BBF employs high school students to provide classroom support, mentoring, and tutoring for students during Saturday school. The Youth Ambassador program provides our students leadership opportunities, employment experience, financial resources, and structured civic engagement. Many report this as their first source of employment.

This Ambassador program employs over 60 students from three partner schools (King-Drew and Fremont High School in LAUSD and Jordan High School in LBUSD). Currently, over ten elementary schools benefit from the support, and several hundred additional elementary school-aged youth are supported.
BBF is also committed to expanding our prescriptive programs by augmenting existing resources with dynamic support. Youth in under-resourced communities are disproportionately less likely to read or have access to books at home. The statistics and impacts of “book deserts” and the lack of in-home personal books in our communities prompted BBF to launch an Assault on Illiteracy. Last year, BBF gave out over 800 books to youth to take home.
Assault on Illiteracy Initiative Eradicating Book Deserts
The Bridge Builders Foundation’s “Assault on Illiteracy” Initiative, in partnership with Tabahani Book Circle, is an impactful program addressing book deserts and promoting reading among under-resourced youth of color. This initiative aims to bridge the educational gap and foster a love for reading by providing free library-quality books.
Book deserts are prevalent in underprivileged communities, hindering academic progress and limiting exposure to diverse ideas. The “Assault on Illiteracy” Initiative tackles this issue by ensuring access to high-quality books that expand horizons and nurture intellectual growth.
Normalizing reading breaks the cycle of illiteracy, empowering youth of color to pursue their educational dreams. Research shows a strong correlation between reading proficiency and academic success. Free books provided through this partnership enhance literacy skills and educational prospects.

This initiative promotes equity and inclusivity by targeting youth of color and addressing systemic barriers to education. The Bridge Builders Foundation aims to create a just society where every child has an equal opportunity to learn and thrive. Over 3,000 books have already been provided to targeted youth.
Additional partners are welcome, and a monthly book engagement is being launched, providing one book per month to multi-youth households in under-resourced communities. Your contribution of as little as $20 per month allows us to commit monthly to two additional households.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car Partners in High School Mentorship Program
A shared commitment to empowering youth and providing access to the resources they need to succeed is what continues to drive and strengthen the collaboration between Bridge Builders Foundation and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Last November, Enterprise joined the “Thriving Under The Influence” Mentoring Program, delivering guidance and inspiration to high school students across Los Angeles.

Long Beach Jordan High School hosted the first of two sessions, where Enterprise Senior Sales Executive, Lucien Hardy, and Area Car Sales Manager, Zach Crandall gave students an overview of Enterprise and its diverse career opportunities. Each shared personal stories that emphasized the significance of education, post-graduation planning, and the importance of continuing to strive for excellence.
During the mentoring session at King-Drew Magnet High School, a team of Black women employees, led by Enterprise Group Talent Development Manager Paige Donnell, delivered a compelling session on personal branding and presenting oneself to potential employers. The students then had the opportunity to engage in an in-depth discussion on cultivating positive relationships, and crafting a robust resume.
Students eagerly anticipate Enterprise participation in another mentoring session scheduled for February. Bridge Builders is proud to partner with Enterprise in its commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders.

Dr. Ernest E. Just Youth Science Program
Exposing, Inspiring, and Supporting Diversity in STEM
To maintain its global leadership, the United States must prioritize domestic investment and foster a robust, diverse, and talented STEM workforce. STEM fields have revolutionized various aspects of human life, and careers in these fields which offer rapid growth and high salaries in the US.
The Bridge Builders Foundation (BBF) has taken up the mission of exposing, inspiring, and supporting ethnic minority youth and women in STEM studies and careers through their Saturday Science Academy and Summer Marine Science Program. Alarming statistics from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) indicate that only 18% of black students scored proficient or above in STEM, while students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds scored 28 points lower than their more affluent peers.
BBF offers an immersive program designed to expand access, success, and diversity in STEM. Through classroom instruction, handson demonstrations, and field explorations of local science facilities and worksites, students engage in STEM content, develop their knowledge, and understand the relevance of STEM in their daily lives.
One of BBF’s primary objectives is to dismantle the stigma associated with STEM and empower ethnic minority youth to pursue STEM careers and academic paths with confidence and a sense of belonging. Over 200 hours of instruction cover a broad range of life, physical, and earth sciences, with guidance from minority and women professors, field practitioners, and mentors.
BBF’s program fosters rigorous and purposeful learning experiences in an informal, out-ofschool format. Research indicates that STEM success often begins outside the classroom, with only 13% of students learning about STEM from teachers and nearly 20% teaching themselves. For communities of color, informal STEM exposure is crucial, as it provides authentic learning opportunities beyond traditional classroom settings.
The BBF program thrives through strong partnerships with corporations, philanthropic organizations, and the community. Classroom sessions and hands-on activities take place at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). Instruction and curriculum development are led by professionals from USC College of Environmental Sciences, UCSD/Scripps Institute, CSUDH, and other esteemed institutions.
In addition to campus-based learning, students enjoy real-life engagement through instructional visits and field trips to corporate partners such as American Honda Motor Company, Infineon, Metro, Hitachi, Southern California Edison, and Southern California Gas.
The Saturday Science Academy runs from January to July, while the summer marine science program spans three consecutive weekends in August and culminates in multiple days of immersive experiences at college campuses like UCSD/Scripps Institute in La Jolla and USC Wrigley Center on Catalina Island. These experiences create lasting memories and fuel a passion for STEM in the hearts of the participants.

2024 SCHOLARSHIP AWARD HONOREE George McKenna
Dr. George McKenna, an accomplished scholar and athlete from New Orleans, nurtured his passion for civil and human rights activism from a young age. He graduated from Xavier University with a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics at 20 and later earned an M.A. in mathematics from Loyola University, Chicago, where he received a teaching fellowship. Dr. McKenna also holds a Doctorate of Education from Xavier University.
Beginning his career in education in the Los Angeles Unified School District as a mathematics teacher, Dr. McKenna also contributed as an engineer to North American Aviation’s Apollo Moon Shot Project. His dedication to teaching eventually led him to focus entirely on education. He continued his studies at Loyola University Law School, UCLA, and California State University, Los Angeles, teaching at various educational levels and advancing in administrative roles within LAUSD.
