Spherical Liv ing A

s a lover of films I hate the question, “What’s your favorite movie?” I couldn’t begin to pick a single film. I am a big re-watcher of movies. Films that are particularly meaningful to me I will watch over and over again. Perhaps it’s a longing for the feeling I get from the story. It’s almost like picking what I want for dinner. A great movie can take you to a place – familiar, warm, encouraging. Like an aspirin to counteract a headache, I can pick a film that evokes happiness to battle a particularly dismal day.

When asked about my favorite movie, I generally answer with the movies re-watched the most. Over the past thirteen years I have probably watched “Under The Tuscan Sun” over 100 times. Diane Lane plays Frances, a writer who, in the opening scene, discovers her husband is cheating on her. Her world is turned upside down. In an attempt to bring her out of her deep depression, her best friend, Patti, pushes her to take a tour of Italy. She stumbles upon a rundown chateau, buys it and starts rebuilding. Diving into a construction project on both the house and her future, real life begins. My favorite character is Katherine. Katherine is a beautiful older woman that embodies the spirit of youth and is made happy by hats and ice cream. She’s a little like a fairy godmother. Every time Frances begins to doubt herself Katherine is there to give a not so gentle but always eloquent knock back into focus.

At one point she quotes film maker Federico Fellini; “you have to live spherically – in many directions. Never lose your childish enthusiasm and things will come your way.” That quote has stayed with me and has been such a good reminder of how to find more encouragement and enjoyment out of life. Re-watching the film in preparation for writing this article, I realized just how much of a prism Frances’s journey has been for me to view my life. How we choose to see the world defines how we will experience the world.

For a long time people believed the earth was flat. There was a beginning and an end and if you were too adventurous, you could fall off the edge. Did they see the end of the earth as a waterfall where one would

plummet eternally? What a terrible thought. As it ends up, happily the world isn’t flat. I often feel that we tend to think of fashion much like the flat earth, linear, starting at one point and with a specific trajectory evolving to one end point. The current “value” plotted on a graph. This is also a disparaging image of reality. If there’s a specific evolution, then there’s a right and a wrong. Just as the earth is an enormous sphere with no beginning and no end, fashion evolves spherically, with, many starting points and infinite trajectories. We’re free to evolve our own personal style with bits and pieces from any number of combinations and influences.

Examining this season’s evolution in commercial fashion, there is little dramatic change. One hears a lot of talk about what impact the election will have on fashion. Will we see an even greater resurgence of pants suits if Hillary gets elected? Will the ever more casual menswear industry lean toward power ties and traditional suits if Trump ends up in the White House? It goes without saying that this is by far the least important part of any conversation on the 2016 Presidential Election. However, as many industries and segments of the economy are playing safe until November 8th, designers seem to have taken the same wait and see attitude about this season. There’s a lot less revolution and much more evolution for Fall / Winter 2016. There is a consistent continuation of similar stories but added embellishment with new and more intricate accessories. When one thinks of technological advances and it’s impact on fashion, you’ll probably turn to the obvious boom of wearable tech.

Apple has a new Apple Watch Hermès edition. Few companies are willing to miss out on their piece of the fitness economy. Swarovski has the Shine. Fitbit teamed up with Tory Burch and the Polo Tech Shirt by Ralph Lauren takes the next step in the “wearable” trend.

Fashionable fitness isn’t the only mark technology is making on the industry. We forget that there’s an entire science of textiles. Georgia Tech has one of the best programs for Textile Engineering. 3D printing has become a huge part of textiles. This season we are seeing more and more 3D printed faux furs. I have to admit that I’ve never been all that upset at the fur industry but the new synthetics are becoming more and more similar to the feel of the real thing, have no stigma and a much lower price tag. Advances in textiles open up new options and endless textures and fewer stitches and seams. Maybe this season designers have taken a chance to slow down and play with the huge advancements in the technology of materials. Technology makes intricacy less and less expensive. This season, pay attention to the tiny details in garments. You will find some fun surprises.

The blurred gender lines in clothing hasn’t slowed down. This is the second season that there is a gender neutral color palette in the Pantone color report. The boy for girl tailoring is still a huge call out for looking current. This season it’s made more exciting by some masculine accessories. Large men’s style wrist watches will be very prevalent as well as cufflinks and wider framed glasses. It could be that it has something to do with all of the military conflict or just the fact that pins, chains, and big brass buttons are fun to play with, but they are everywhere. Epaulettes are one of my favorite things. Find a jacket or shirt with some cuff treatments or epaulettes, throw in a couple of military pins and you’ll

be all set. Coated jeans make a great winter staple. The denim has a waxy coating. It looks great and keeps the chill out. Pins, buttons, and eclectic flair add a lot of fun when polishing off a look. Scarves are such a fun and easy way of taking a very simple outfit and making it lots of different outfits. My sister plans to make a white shirt, black skinny jeans and a short boot from Think! her uniform for the season. She’s going to put different scarves and accessories with it and have something totally different every single day. Great way to keep it fresh, easy and current.

My nephews, Lucas and Liam, are 4 and 6. If you frequent our store, you’ve probably seen them running around from time to time. Watching them reminds me of what it means to have “childish enthusiasm.” While their minds are so very different, their effervescent imagination and curiosity is never-ending. When we go down to our family farm, there are always new and exciting things for them to experience. We ran across some broken turtle eggs on a recent trip. The mysteries of the universe filled their eyes as we explained where the eggs came from.

It is so easy to become callused to the small things in life that used to inspire us. Mostly it’s our reaction to other peoples perception of us that, over time, makes us so ashamed to be childlike in our wonder. I suppose it starts in grade school. The things we love lose their luster for fear of not being accepted. A lifetime of trying to be what others expect of us makes us boring. Boring leads to stuck and that rut slowly tells us that what we’ve always done is the best version of ourselves.

What does it mean to live spherically with childlike enthusiasm? For me, it’s attempting to overcome years of molding myself into what I think others will like. If you really examine your likes or dislikes, where did they come from? It’s an interesting exercise. Children’s dreams are as fluid as a river winding down the terrain of possibility. When I was a child I wanted to be King Arthur when I grew up. Every year brought different dreams but I’ve pretty much decided not to grow up. I do a lot of “adulting” by attending to the responsibilities of a grownup. However, I do my best to hold onto the spirit of Peter Pan. The very foundation of the fashion industry is a simple truth. All of life is a sandbox and we’ll never stop playing.

We hope you enjoy the 7th issue of INSPIRE. Our goal is simple; help our customers feel empowered with knowledge of current fashion trends, make the most applicable fashion advice accessible and, of course, show off our methodically crafted collection for the season. We are testing an evolution of our own with this season’s book. Rather than relying just on the images of designers who’ve shown around the world, I’ve put together our own looks with many of the pieces coming from another long time Sandy Springs store, Potpourri. I’ve prepaired 10 “Springboards” with suggestions for how to play with, evolve, and own your style this season. If a lifetime of adulting has earned you one thing, it’s the right to live and explore life spherically, in many directions, with wild abandon and no fear of failing.

Buttons and leather and shiny brass bling !

These are a few of my favorite things! While not necessarily practical, it is fun to look at some of the more avant garde ideas for this season. From the DSquared2 prefall collection, the brothers did all beautifully tailored men’s outfits for women. It was hard to pick only one but I just love this jacket with the cufflinks and tie. They did a ladies’ tuxedo that was too elegant for words. Bellstaff’s collection featured a number of leather pieces that are stunning. This delicately trimmed jacket is one of my favorites. As I mentioned, big brass buttons littered the runway this fall. While you may not dress quite so over the top, the red dress with the white belt is hot–to– trot. Have a shot of courage and mix a little flair into your wardrobe this season.

Frances Richardson I nt e rv i e w by m a rs h a ri g gs What first brought you to Foot Solutions?

Living in Sandy Springs, I drive by all the time. One day I just saw the sign and came in.

What brought you in when you saw the sign? Were your feet uncomfortable?

Yes, my feet were causing me problems. Not only was it hard to find a good fit but my feet were never really comfortable.

And are they more comfortable now, I hope?

Absolutely.

Has that made a difference in what you do?

It really has. it’s made a difference in the way I dress. I feel like I have pretty shoes to go with stylish clothes. I love my athletic shoes but when your feet hurt and you feel like that’s the only thing that you have to wear, it’s kind of depressing.

I know you have some fun hobbies. What are they?

I love to play tennis and enjoy crafting. I do basket weaving and make jewelry. I enjoy beadwork which I also incorporate into my baskets. I love, of course, to play with the grandchildren.

Where do you get most of your inspiration for style?

I don’t think I have a style! You know, I don’t have a title for it.

I just buy what I like and I like unusual stuff. My daughter says I’m, “Casually elegant with a touch of BOHO.” I was like oh my… Is that good?

What do you do for relaxation?

My husband and I like to travel and I like to read and cook.

Do you have a favorite pair of shoes?

Favorite pair of shoes… Yeah, I like my walking shoes, by Brooks. They’re the most comfortable “go-to” for running around and doing the things I enjoy.

How many children do you have?

We have two children.

Yes. Annie lives here in town and Billy lives in Birmingham.

And how many grandchildren do you have?

Five, ages nine to newborn.

Do you get to spend much time with them?

We wish they were closer. Birmingham isn’t far but its farther than Buckhead. You know, you have to plan a trip. It’s not really easy to drive for just a day.

How would you describe what it was like when both your children first left home?

Quiet! (She said laughingly.)

You’ve lived in Atlanta forty-one years. If someone was new here, what would you recommend they do?

Well, I’m a foodie. There are so many great restaurants. I love anything Italian. There’s a new place in Sandy Springs, Il Giallo Osteria. You have to check it out.

If you were going to go on a weekend trip, where would you want to go?

Is my basement out of the question? I love to spend time in my studio…

Other than that, the beach. I love the Charleston area.

What do you do to keep young?

Well… you know, I just do things that make me happy... I have a great marriage to a generous man and that helps.

Looking Up As we board our flight home from Marseilles via Charles de Gaulle, I am thinking about how I can take some of the joy of my vacation on through the coming days. How can I continue to feel refreshed, inspired, and nourished in my soul after the baggage has been unpacked? I know exactly what awaits me when I return. It’s no better or no worse than what is familiar to us all. There will be the normal unpacking, laundry and straightening on top of the return to work and all that was not done while I was gone. I’m ready to tackle it but don’t want to spend so much time focusing downward on my To Do list. I am prone to stay in the task mode way too much and let days and weeks go by without getting the rest and refreshment that we all need. How can I balance what I must do with what I want to do and even need to do to keep my spirit healthy?

The thing I do on vacation which brings the most to me and could continue to do so later is to Look Up. I first learned this from my photographer husband who would have gorgeous images of things I never saw even though we were walking side by side. He would be seeing roof lines, windows, trees, and so many images I would miss altogether because he knew to look up for it and I didn’t. There is just as much beauty to be found right here at home as anywhere, I just need to look up from my daily work and see it. Admittedly, I find this harder to do than I would like it to be.

Looking up draws me out of myself into the bigger world around me. I’m more aware of my surroundings as well as the people with whom I come in contact. If I’m only looking down for the next step, I will be safer and possibly more productive, but I will miss everything else. To be sure, only looking up and never watching the next step can be disastrous, so how can I balance this? It brings to mind a phrase we heard over and over years ago in London as we boarded trains to “Mind the Gap”. You really do have to look down and order your steps to get to the next place and accomplish all you have to do. But I don’t want to stay there.

So, now, I need to find a balance between “Look Up” and “Mind the Gap”. Clearly, there has to be a mindful pause from one to the other. Recently, I read a story about an African tribe who would, when walking long distances, pause occasionally to let their spirit’s catch up with them. Some days I so need to do that! I think some of the popularity of decluttering which has caught on everywhere is a sign that we need to let our spirits catch up to us because we all lead such harried lives.

We need to declutter our spirits as much as our homes.

“ Lo o k i n g U p ” C o nt e n u e d Actually, this is what I am able to do on vacation. Clearly, I have to “Mind the Gap” to even get away to a place of my choosing. Then I make specific plans to “Pause” and let my spirit catch up with myself, taking a deep breath or two. Then I “Look Up” to all that is new or familiar around me. It may be a person or place, but when I am able to reflect on my surroundings, I am nourished and my soul is refreshed. Still, I have to discipline myself to do these same things at home and at work. As I do so, I will be able to take in so much more of all that is around me and appreciate the people that cross my path as well. In the process, I learn so much and my experiences are broadened.

Upon reflection, I realize that way too much of my life is spent in the shallows. When our interests go no farther than ourselves, we become shallow. A deep soul is one who observes both people and surroundings, and one who reflects and gains understanding. This cannot be done when there is only busyness.

As I become older, I want to be more focused on who I am becoming rather than what I am accomplishing. I believe that attempting to Mind the Gap, Pause and Look Up will help me see new paths and experiences as well as enhancing my approach to every day life. And what a perfect time to do this as we come into fall. I want to enjoy every minute of it and not rush through to the holidays. Soon the color of fall will be everywhere and those colors will be reflected in our clothes and homes as well.

Marilyn Steinberg I nt e rv i e w by m a rs h a ri g gs How did you find our store when you first came in? And when was that?

It’s been about 3 years now and our doctor was the one that told us about you.

And that was because?

I was just having trouble finding shoes that were comfortable for my crazy feet.

Did we live up to your expectations when you got here?

Well, actually you exceeded our expectations. Not only did you have shoes that were comfortable, they were actually pretty. So many other places for people with hard to fit feet carry only shoes that look, “old lady.” Your shoes are stylish.

The reason we kept coming back was that one person would always wait on us. They weren’t going back and forth, working with other people. We felt like we really had the attention of the person with us.

Wonderful! How long have you lived in Atlanta?

We’ve lived here several times. We’ve been back 16 years now.

Before that we lived in LA, Paris and New York.

How exciting. How does Atlanta compare to LA, Paris and New York?

Atlanta is just home. We were glad to get back because our children were here, our friends were here and we were just ready to get home.

How many children do you have?

Three girls.

And do you have grandchildren?

Yes, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

What do you like to do for fun?

I like to read. I used to play Mahjong but I took a break for a while. I’ll probably go back to it. I like to travel, just not as often as we used to. There are two groups of women that I get together with. One meets on Fridays and we go to different places for lunch and then once a month, Mickey and I have a little dinner group with two other couples. Both are great fun.

Bones.

Where do you get your inspiration for style?

As for my clothes, a woman named Sherri helps me a couple of times a year. My favorite clothing line is St. John. Mickey is the decorator for our home but he also likes to help pick out some of my clothes.

When you and Mickey come in the store you’re always so happy, upbeat and fun to be with. What keeps you young?

Oh thank you. It’s because we’re each with our best friend and we love each other. We’ve been married 60 years and my 80th birthday is this coming Friday.

I just love that. It certainly comes across and it’s a wonderful thing to feel that way. What are you going to do for fun on your birthday?

On Friday, September 30th, the Friday group is taking me to Bones.

That’s where we go when someone is having a big birthday. Mickey is giving me a party Saturday night. We’re going to the St Regis and having cocktails at our daughter and son-in-law’s. Then we will go downstairs. Mickey has a room ready. Our son-in-law is getting the music and we will have a family party with the children and the grandchildren.

Try a different twist on monocromatic, not all the cloths but all the accesories. This cashmere hoodie was calling my name with the little red touches. It may be hard to see on paper but the jeans are what i would call a platinum charcoal. They are black, but with just a touch of sheen. Red glasses, red hat and red boots. Life’s to short to be dull.

Margaret McAskill I nt e rv i e w by m a rs h a ri g gs Refresh my memory. How did you first find Foot Solutions?

I had serious foot surgery and was still recovering but I was able to start wearing some kind of shoes. A friend at work mentioned Foot Solutions to me and recommended that I go in and see what I might be able to wear. She said that your shoes would be more supportive, which is what was needed following my surgery.

Were we what you expected?

Well, no. I was surprised, but pleasantly - in a good way! You know, the name “Foot Solutions” - I just didn’t realize I would come to your store and find such cute shoes! Things have gotten even more fashionable over the last two years. Plus, you’ve given me ideas about things I would not normally have felt comfortable wearing. Now I do and that’s really nice! Also, it’s now very hard to wear shoes from other stores. The other day I was trying on some shoes that I had prior to surgery and realized that they were just not going to work for me anymore, even though the shoes were very pretty.

So that was about 2 years ago?

Yes, a little over two years ago. Summer of 2014

How long have you lived in Atlanta?

Oh gosh, well… since I started high school.

So you’re almost a native.

I was born in Atlanta. My dad’s a native Atlantan and my mom is from Athens. We lived in Athens when I was a child.

So what’s one thing you would tell people that are new to Atlanta that they should do?

If you move here from another place, hopefully you will find people to be very friendly and gracious. Beyond that, there is a lot of history and culture in Atlanta! The Atlanta History Center has some interesting exhibits. Downtown Atlanta is full of neat landmarks that you might not necessarily know exist.

Atlanta is home to some lovely neighborhoods - Buckhead and old Brookhaven are especially beautiful. And everyone needs to visit the Varsity at least once!

Well I know you work. What is it that you do?

I work in the finance division of a large company.

I love collaborating with people from different departments within our company to design new, innovative solutions that enhance our business.

The international aspect of business is particularly interesting and being on the cutting edge of things is challenging and fulfilling!

Traveling for work, have you ever lost your luggage?

Thankfully, only one time. I wore the same thing for three days. I’ll never forget that.

So what do you do to relax?

I love spending time with my husband and three sons! We enjoy watching movies and entertaining. SEC football games and going to the North Carolina mountains are favorites too!

What are the ages of your children?

Seventeen, fourteen and eleven.

What’s your favorite part of this stage of their lives?

Now that they’re older we can converse on a different level. They’re all very interested in current events and what’s going on in the world.

George, the oldest, said that he “thinks all three of us (he and his siblings) are really going to do well.” He said, “we are all critical thinkers.”

I thought that was a pretty cool comment from a seventeen year old.

They are all different but all fun. I love seeing them grow up valuing integrity and manners.

Do you have any hobbies? Do you even have time for hobbies?

Well I enjoy doing needlepoint, although I don’t do it as much as I would like. We are quite involved in our church, Peachtree Presbyterian. We are fortunate to have wonderful pastors and many friends there.

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?

We really love going to Montreat, which is in the North Carolina mountains. I also like to visit historical vacation spots, such as Boston, Gettysburg, and Washington, D.C.

In your travels, have you ever seen something that you would describe as almost literally breathtaking?

Two places have been especially breathtaking! This past summer we went to the Grand Tetons, which were completely majestic. The other place that is moving beyond words, in a different way, is Westminster Abbey. It is beyond spectacular! To be in a place of such historical significance coupled with magnificent music and worship is unbelievable!

Caryn Bains I nt e rv i e w by m a rs h a ri g gs How did you first find out about Foot Solutions?

Oh gosh, it was so many years ago I think I just went in there in desperation. I needed shoes that are very narrow and I couldn’t find shoes that fit me. You have them and you know how to make it work. What I have found is that you and Brian can make many of the shoes you have in stock work for my narrow feet. I am happy with the styles and my feet are happy as well.

How long ago was that?

I’m not sure, it was before Brian came to work with you. Maybe six years ago?

So tell me how long you’ve lived in Atlanta?

Since 1982

Where were you from originally?

I am from Oneonta, a tiny town in north Alabama.

If you were to meet someone who was brand new to Atlanta, what would you tell them? Advice, a place to go? Why you love it here?

I like it because there are a lot of accomplished and interesting people. There are a lot of fun things going on. Take in all the art galleries, the High Museum, and the Alliance Theatre.

Let’s see, you have children but I don’t know how many and how old.

Yes, we have three; John is 25, Erica is twenty nine and her husband’s name is Randy. Emmett just graduated from Georgia State and he’s 22.

You work with your husband right?

I worked in pharmaceutical sales for 25 years and the company that I was working with, GlaxoSmithKline, downsized and offered me a package in 2008. After that I started a business helping people lose weight. I had a lot of fun with that. It kept me busy for about 3 years and helped me put my son through college. Since then I’ve been Rolf’s office manager.

Rolf, your husband, is a doctor. Right?

Yes, he’s a family doctor.

Where’s his practice?

It’s in Alpharetta and he wears a lot of your shoes, too!

T h e R e a l D e a l B a i n s C o nt e n u e d What do you do for fun? Do you have any hobbies or anything you like to do to relax?

I love hanging out with our dogs, taking them on hikes in the woods of north Georgia and just walking with them in our Sandy Springs neighborhood. My primary interests are in nutrition and health and I enjoy reading books about healthy cooking and then making healthy meals for my husband and me. I also love decorating and my husband and I stop at every antique market we see when we are in the mountains. I love design and the design shows on TV—you might say I am an HGTV addict. I cannot seem to stop decorating our home and our cabin in Cherry Log. So as not to seem too shallow, I am also a spiritual seeker and spend a great deal of time going on spiritual retreats and in meditation in my everyday life.

Any particularly favorite vacation spots?

I’m not sure that I have a favorite destination. We love southern California because the views are incredible. There are lots of long trails for hiking and, of course, the art museums, and antique stores. The weather is typically just delightful. Wherever we travel we always have fun.

Where do you get your inspiration for style?

I look at several fashion magazines and follow Vogue online. I also look forward to Brian’s Look Book twice per year! I follow decorating trends also, however, and enjoy following design trends in Architectural Digest and Traditional Home. My tastes run toward more traditional design with a few transitional pieces thrown in for variety, along with the art that my husband and I enjoy shopping for. I appreciate the opportunity to appear in your fall Look Book and hope people enjoy looking at it as much I have enjoyed being interviewed for it and appearing in it in your shoes!
