Innovation Over the past few years, I’ve commented about how advancements in textiles have changed the game of fashion. This season I took a deeper dive into what the textile industry has in store. Textiles may not come to mind when one thinks about innovation but there is a revolution taking place in this sleepy industry. Imagine a world where your gym cloths were specially designed to not smell, where silk became accessible and prolific. What if elaborate patterns, customization, and intricate designs could be printed directly on fabric with an inkjet printer? What if a shirt could be worn and transmit all of your vitals to an iPad. This future is now and it’s very exciting. Earlier this year, the Swiss textile innovator HeiQ conducted a consumer research study regarding how your clothes smell. The study focused primarily on gym clothes, which tend to smell a little gymish. With shocking results, the study found that people don’t actually want their cloths to smell like a high school locker room. We’ve tackled oder on the same battlefield for decades. We buy stronger detergents, add more fabric softener, and all sorts of additives. This is how laundry detergent is a more than 5 billion dollar a year industry. The study also found that the consumers were unaware that there are currently work out clothes with built-in technologies that prevent or fight against odor. This technology will not keep you from needing to wash your clothes. However, needing less detergents, means less wash cycles, and a reduction in the energy consumption. This Benefits everyone. Bolt Threads is an American biotech company leading the way in innovating the next generation of high performance fabrics. Their partnership with Stella McCartney’s fashion line centers around the production of a one-of-a-kind custom dress using the company’s Bolt Microsilk. At first glance, it may look like just another golden shift dress, but this simple staple is crafted entirely of Bolt’s new protein-based yarn. Silk is produced by a variety of insects. The best known silk is produced by the cocoon of the mulberry silkworm. According to Chinese legend, Empress His Ling Shi sat sipping tea under a mulberry tree when a cocoon fell into her cup and began to unravel. She became obsessed with the shimmering fiber and discovered the source that began a nearly 3 millennia Chinese monopoly on silk production. These shimmering cocoons started the silk craze and they do remain the predominant source of silk production today. There are many insects that produce different sorts of silk fiber. Bolt’s biosilk is inspired by spider silk. Silks regal appearance, soft touch, and cost prohibitive farming has made silk a status symbol for thousands of years. Even modern silk production is highly labor intensive with small yields of silk. Perhaps the creation of Bolt’s biosilk will allow more of us to access silk goods at reasonable prices.

One of the most intriguing innovations centers around managing body heat. Coats and jackets are among my very favorite fall winter items. A coat or a jacket can totally transform an outfit but at its core, the idea is to keep you warm. Retaining body heat and protecting you from the elements are the main purpose for this outerwear and of course, we want it to look good as well. Many different materials in innovative combinations tout their superiority in the outdoor world. Cotton is lightweight and breathable but has no wicking properties. Goose down and duck down are among the most effective insulators but can be expensive and quite cumbersome. Fleece, nylon, polypropylene, thinsulate, and wool are all capable of retaining heat. This summer Acanthurus GmbH introduced a nano thermal warming textile. Put simply, this technology will allow your clothing to be actively warming rather than or in addition to heat retaining. This ultra light textile can be integrated into the weave of any garment. This fiber is powered by a standard power pack, perhaps similar to your back up battery for your smartphone. It is non-metallic, emitting no radiation. It is thin and flexible and would not change the appearance of the garment into which it is incorporated. Controlled by an app on your smartphone, one day soon a long sleeve shirt made with this innovative warming technology might just keep you more toasty than your down puffer jacket. While the techno savvy engineers bring change to the building materials of fashion, what are the creatives in the design world doing with them? To severely over-generalize, at first glance it feels a little like much of this fall winter could be spring summer. Color pallets have jumped the divide. There is a lot of light pink, like Ballet Slipper (see Pantone Color report page 6). From the St. John collection there is this delightfully delicate long wool coat. The coat is Ballet Slipper pink, with an irregular lapel that folds over itself twice. Tom Ford stepped out of his norm this season. His typically classic and refined look has a much sharper edge. While he still uses a lot of black, the metallics and bright colors juxtapose one another to leave a brilliant impression. Grey is on everything. In more traditional uses, Brooks Brothers shows grey pants suits, shift dresses, and slacks. If you haven’t shopped Brooks Brothers in a while, you should stop in. You might just be surprised how fresh some of their updated tailoring looks. Half of the Michael Kors collection is grey knits. Grey and camel colors are paired together with great frequency. Grey makes a wonderful substitution for black in footwear. Contrast is one of the easiest ways to make an outfit interesting. Grey booties with black pants will make things pop. In addition, grey will also work well with navy. I’m very glad to see even less designers dressing us for the gym every day. I predict and hope that only leggings and white outsoles will remain after the “athleasure” trend dies. We are, however, undeniably still heading toward a more casual lifestyle. Causal doesn’t have to be sloppy and casual doesn’t have to be relegated to the weekend. A more casual style is acceptable in many more work environments. I love mixing more dressy pieces and casual pieces to make an updated, put together look. Marissa Webb showed a look that had the most gorgeous sleeveless blouse with ruffles, collar, and bow sash tucked into a high waisted crop pant in a dark sand color with cargo pockets and an ankle strap pump. Very dressy top, more casual pant, dressy shoes. The all important white dress shirt is still a must have. A crisp heavy tailored dress shirt can be used more casually or dressy. Since the adoption of more and more tailored pants, leggings, and jean leggings, ladies of all ages are wanting longer shirts. I’m often asked if it is acceptable to have the longer shirt that covers your

4

FA L L / W I N TER 201 7

tush and a jacket or sweater that is shorter? Yes, not only is it acceptable but very on trend. Let’s talk about what the combination of those things does for one’s figure. Body dysmorphia is ingrained into our culture. Virtually everyone has a distorted impression of their body as compared to the reality of their shape. The temptation is to “hide” that extra tummy, hips, or tush with something a little baggy. In truth, this actually hurts your shape more than helping it. A skinnier pant may feel like your “all hanging out there,” but it actually shows what shape you have. Don’t like part of it, cover it with a long shirt. Pairing a shorter sweater or coat here will raise your waist giving you a greater shape. With a little encouragement to try this, I assure you, you’ll feel better about the way you look and your partner will not mind either. The trend toward a more casual lifestyle knows no gender. In your lifetime, you likely remember when a three piece suit was standard work wear for men. There’s nothing wrong with that, in fact, I rather like it. I think that too many men forget about how much a vest or waist coat can sharpen an ensemble. When filtering through runway fashion, it seems even harder to find the practical useful looks in menswear. However, this season, I was blown away with Brunello Cucinelli’s entire collection. I think he put the best case forward for just how stunning and cool the more casual trend can be. While there were looks that lean more traditional with wool slacks and a coat, a majority of these looks were paired with jeans. He used a lot of grey with pops of orange accents. In some cases he used traditional materials, like wool, for pants but gave them a more modern or casual styling. For example, adding cargo pockets to a flat front pair of wool pants looks fantastic. An essence of cool describes some of the simple changes men can make in their dressing. The mixing of more casual and dressy elements works for men as well as women. If pairing denim, perhaps stick with a traditional dress shirt and tie with sport coat. If you’re more comfortable with slacks, lose the tie and add a vest. There’s so much fun to be had and men can be so slow to join the party. The time is now gentlemen!! I’m excited to say we have more Springboards than ever before. We have even added a couple of men’s springboards. We hope these will be easy jumping off points to try something new. I would like to thank our clothing partners; Potpourri here in Sandy Springs and Mode Marche/M2 in Ansley Mall. We hope you will visit their stores, because you will not be disappointed. The mission of this book is to filter through what is happening in fashion and share easy ways to feel up to date. In addition, we hope to earn some modicum of trust that we actually know and understand trends and fashion, despite it saying Foot Solutions above the door. We see all types of people, all ages, men and women, either trying to feel better or keep from feeling poorly. There is a distinct difference in the happiness of those who feel that wearing healthier footwear is a choice and those that feel as though it has been thrust upon them. Some of our shoes may look different than what you’ve worn before but might actually be more up to date, in terms of fashion, and are surely more healthy and comfortable than the status quo. We spend countless hours following trends, predicting what’s next and curating a selection that perform in function and fashion. Since most of our footwear comes from Europe, we are more often ahead of the trends than behind. Give us a chance and we hope to impact your life. This is now the 9th edition of our little book. We hope that you enjoy and will be inspired to innovate a little in your style. Come play with us.

Colour Report F

or more than 20 years, Pantone, the global authority on color, has surveyed the designers of New York Fashion Week and beyond to bring you the season’s most important color trends. There is a commonality between the colors we are seeing on the runway in New York and London. However, individuality is evident and we see a distinct difference between the shows in the two cities in the way colors are combined. Bookended by a dynamic Grenadine red and a tawny Autumn Maple, the color palette for Fall 2017 leans more to warmth. While comforting, enveloping colors are crucial to the seasonal feeling, standout shades include a pale pink Ballet Slipper, a refreshing Golden Lime, and a bright Marina blue. These hues add a striking touch when paired with the classic autumnal shades of Navy Peony, Neutral Gray, Butterrum and Tawny Port.

An excellent coat is an outfit all on its own. I love the texture of this Desigual coat. Not only the texture to the touch, but the texture to the eye. The large cross hatch knit of green and navy will keep you warm while looking very cool. The navy leggings and tank make for an incredibly comfortable and stylish look. The grey boots work wonderfully here but will also work great with black and a plethora of other colors.

A lightweight leather coat is a must have for our climate. Lighter colors will work great for spring, fall, and even early winter. Don’t shy away from lighter colors. We don’t have to dress like we are going to a funeral once cooler weather sets in. Again, the grey bootie will be a go to for many color pallets. Don’t fear the cropped pant and short bootie. White jeans are a year round item. The Labor Day rule is out the window. Have fun! The contrast here between black and white with the vivacious red is one sharp look. When looking for a skinny jean that you will be comfortable with, remember there are companies that do make super high rise. This Foxcroft top is the Holy Grail of long tops to cover the tush. My mother will be getting this shirt in every color. Don’t fear fun. This bomber jacket might “look young,” but no one ever asked for a jacket that would make them look their age.

The Real Deal

Shelly Kacergis

How long have you been a FS Customer and what first brought you in? It has been 4 or 5 years now. I was looking for comfortable sandals and running shoes. As it happened, the first time I came in, you were having your Think! trunk show. I had gotten a pair of Think! sandals in prior years and loved them. I wasn’t sure where else in town sold them.

Were we what you expected? Yes, but much more. I did not expect to find such fashionable shoes that are also comfortable. Also, I had no idea that inserts would solve my foot issues.

Are your feet more comfortable now? Absolutely! I have no tolerance for foot discomfort. I now have almost nothing but shoes from Foot Solutions Sandy Springs in my closet now.

Do you have more fun with shoes that you used to? Or has shopping with us changed the way you think about shoes? I hated to shop for shoes before finding your store. I had lived with a very limited selection, it was frustrating. Now, for better or worse, I love to shop for shoes and even make them the focus of an outfit.

What do you do for fun? I recently retired after 30 years in banking so every day is for fun. I play lots of tennis, take long walks with my 2 dogs, go to live theatre and travel. I’ve been a season ticket holder at the Atlanta Lyric Theatre in Marietta for years.

What do you do that makes you happy? I work with small groups of women in Kenya who I met on a trip there a couple of years ago. We help them find ways to earn money. This allows them to pay for school fees for their children. So far, we have 40 women raising chickens and selling eggs. The women don’t want hand outs. They seek opportunity. Helping them find it and fund it makes me happy!

T h e R e a l D e a l “ K a c e rg i s ” C o nt i n u e d I know you just got back from an amazing trip with your family. Tell me about it. We hiked a section of The Camino de Santiago in northern Spain. The Camino is a 500 mile route which begins at the border between France and Spain. It ends at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. The whole treck takes about 40 days. Not having 40 consecutive days to do the whole thing at one time, we are doing sections. We started in Pamplona and hiked through vineyards and farmland to Logrono (the capital of the Rioja wine region). It was so nice to be away from the bustle of our life here.

How long have you lived in Atlanta and what brought you here? We came here with our two sons from Whidbey Island near Seattle 25 years ago. My husband left the Navy as a pilot to fly for Delta.

What’s your favorite restaurant? I like Kiosko, a Columbian restaurant at the Marietta Square and El Nopal, a Mexican resturant, near Kennesaw. Both are family owned and really authentic.

What’s the best book you’ve ever read? The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown is one of the best books ever. An interesting part of history and very inspiring.

If you were a drink, a libation, what would you be? A margarita! On the rocks, with salt, and not too sweet.

Is there a particular brand or brands of shoes we sell that you like the most? Gabor and Naot have been working best for me. I have a lot of Think! as well.

Rest

My mother in law used to answer the question of what she wanted for any kind of present the same way every time. “Peace on Earth, good will toward men” she would instantly reply. It has become a tongue in cheek mantra for all of us over the years. Years ago I thought it was just an easy way to avoid giving a real answer. As the years passed, I began to realize that it was a more sincere answer than I had imagined, revealing something she could not easily express. As I get older, I understand more and more her desire for a peaceful and restful life. While world peace is a lofty and universal goal, waiting for it could be a somewhat lengthy process. The other thing I am learning is that what she sought is a gift you can only give yourself. A peaceful spirit is something to which I aspire every day. Some days I do better than others. The more I think and read about ways to carry the calm into the whirlwind of daily life, I see that this desire is not unique to me at all but rather an almost universal desire. There are many names for it and much advice given on how to achieve it but I don’t think I am oversimplifying things to say that people in general just want to enjoy themselves and avoid stress. Whether at work or play, less stress just feels better for our bodies and there is plenty of research that supports that. The effect of stress on productivity, health and relationships is not questioned. In fact, there are multiple industries devoted to reducing stress, whether physical, mental or spiritual. There is no telling how many blog posts are daily delivered to inboxes that at least touch on the subject. Of course, this does not even begin to consider the industries and professional practices solely devoted to dealing with stress in our lives. I first started really considering how I could de-stress over the past ten years or so. Whether this is a normal time frame for such an activity or I was a latecomer to the party, I don’t know. Perhaps the aging process just brings into focus more and more the need and desire to take better care of oneself. In the beginning, I gave thought to things I really enjoy doing as a way to enhance my life. For me, it was getting back to needle crafts which has always been a love of mine. I love making things but there just was not time for any of that while I was raising young children, caring for a home, marriage, and a dog. In those days I used to avoid even caring for a plant or having any unnecessary thing that relied on me. Gradually, I was able to do things like learn to knit and join likeminded crafters on social media. It was a wonderful way to reconnect with myself and my own individual personality. It was something that was truly mine. I tried to attend the Atlanta Knitting Guild, which is a wonderful organization, but it was hard to really participate around store hours and when I realized it was just adding stress, I decided to put that aside. As time passed, I began to realize that my life, schedule and responsibilities were not slowing down as my family matured. I had always imagined it would. I remember years ago talking to the mother of three daughters after the last of the three married. I imagined that at that point in her life, she would begin to have a much more settled lifestyle. She informed that I was terribly mistaken about that and that I should not expect any such thing to happen to me. She was so right.

21

I N SP I RE • INNOVAT I O N

“ r est ” C o n t i n u e d In other aspects of life outside the home, nothing else was slowing down either. By this time, the emergence of cell phones, then smart phones, and social media only added activities to an already full life. We are always available to everyone now and participating in a second virtual life as well as the continued physically present life. Technology is great but it hasn’t seemed to lessen the to do list at all. So maybe everyone isn’t looking for the peaceful, smooth and relaxed lifestyle I desire but there must be a lot of us. I was reading a blog post the other day about rest and saw that it had been written for a well known women’s athletic wear company. They have developed a line of clothes just for relaxing and they aren’t the only ones! I, myself, have fallen prey to shopping for just the right items to wear at home after work. I wonder what my grandparents would think about that? My grandmother would change her own dress and my mother’s when she was a young girl in time for my grandfather to arrive home from work. My grandfather is seen in an old photograph at the beach watching my mother play and he was wearing a suit. Somehow, even without benefit of “leisure wear” I think that their lives were more leisurely. We must be doing something wrong. When did “busy” become the new “prosperous?” Busy is socially desirable and ethically admired. Down time is theoretically something we know we need but if you are asked what you are doing and you answer with “nothing,” people will probably think there is something wrong or that you are sick. Not only are we a little embarrassed by inactivity, it can sometimes seem virtually impossible to do. Have you ever planned to spend a quiet afternoon at home relaxing only to find yourself just putting in one load of laundry, or watering the plants, or even cleaning out a drawer? It seems one thing inevitably leads to another. Try to make yourself actually do nothing for ten minutes and you may find it to be excruciating. I do. I’m not saying that doing that will be the answer in and of itself but it is an interesting experiment in evaluating where your weaknesses are. I, personally, think I am addicted to accomplishing “stuff,” whether valuable or not, I need to work on really relaxing. Don’t think I am trying to inform anyone or tell anyone how to order their lives so that their heart, mind and body are more at peace, but I write this only to encourage us together. I have recently been learning from the writing of others in my search for a better approach to rest. It became crystal clear over the last six years that after six days of work I needed to arrange for a day of rest. Otherwise, the next week of work would not be as productive as it needed to be. For me, I felt I needed to have everything clean and straight before I could sit down and enjoy myself. After all, that’s just a good work ethic to work first, play later. Right? Obviously, the problem here is that the rest never came. I had to find a way to let some good things go in order to preserve the better things. Then there is the question of how to rest. I’m really not that good at it so I started with just relaxing and doing what I enjoy such as the knitting, needlepoint, reading, and sitting on our deck listening to the birds with my husband. But even those things can take the place of a truer need for real rest.

22

FA L L / W I N TER 201 7

As I progress in this journey, I have gradually set my weekday alarm earlier and earlier to enjoy a little quiet every day of the week. I used to always have the television news on but I am now more at ease with the quiet. I am giving myself the time to connect with myself and with God each day and it really does make a difference. I can realign my thinking away from the urgency of every day details to the things that I know are true. When that happens, there is a real change in how I feel physically and how I interact with others throughout the day. I can keep my eyes more focused on the important things and adjust more quickly to the unexpected. It just occurred to me very recently that I used to have to crawl into bed on Sunday afternoons to be able to face the next week. Now I may decide to read in bed or take a nap from time to time but I am not as exhausted as I used to be. I am sure that these daily rest times are a big part of that change. Also, I am making an effort to be more “present” in the moment. I tend to try to do too many things at the same time. It really isn’t the best approach or the most rewarding. When I am working, I need to be working. When I am resting, I need to rest. When I am interacting with another person, I need to be intent on only that one thing. I’ll let you know when I feel as though I am getting better at that... Another personal goal I have is to give a better answer when people ask, “How are you?” Busy is not the answer I want to give even though I live a full life. So, how do you rest? What circumstances most enable you to relax and enjoy yourself?

Suspenders, And Skin, And ColorbloCkin’ While farmers may wear them and plumbers may need them, suspenders can be an extremely cute accesory. I absolutely adore this playful look by The Great Fall. Each fall and winter the one question I hear the most is, “How do I wear my pants with these short booties?” There’s a very simple answer, all ways are popular and acceptable. Tucking into the boot, wearing over the boot or cuffing above the boot showing a little skin or a fun sock are all great choices. It’s less about what’s overall accepted and more about the pants. Color blocking and contrast make some of the most interesting looks. Don’t be afraid of color. A simple way to implement color is with shoes, rather than a black shoe with black pants, try gray, red, or even brown. Use yellow or orange to interject a pop of interest. Like the image below, the orange can be of similar brightness of the other colors to blend beautifully.

The Real Deal

Stephanie Brewer What first brought you in to see us? My son, James, thought I needed new shoes. He wanted me to see his boyfriend’s shoe store, so he brought me in!

Were we what you expected? I was expecting expensive shoes that my grandmother would have worn. I was pleasantly surprised to find so many really cute shoes! I fell in love with some awesome platform sandals as well as a pair of cute closed toed strappy shoes. I had to have them.

Are your feet more comfortable now? YES! The platforms by Naot, are the most comfortable shoes I own. I expected to be able to wear them showing real estate property for a few hours, but I can wear them all day. Better yet, when I get home, taking off my shoes is not the first thing on my mind.

Do you have more fun with shoes than you used to? Or has shopping with us changed the way you think about shoes? Yes, I know that when I buy shoes from Brian’s store they will be super comfortable. I’m not concerned about the cost since I know I will get years of comfortable days out of them. No more disposable shoes.

Does it affect your lifestyle? Before coming to the store to buy my shoes, I would just buy them wherever I could find them, as long as they were even slightly comfortable. When I needed a style, I would go from shoe store to shoe store looking for a cute and comfortable pair of shoes. Inevitably, I would give up and go home with nothing. Later, I would order something online, and they would never really fit properly. I needed shoes that were cute and comfortable, but I never had many to choose from, until now.

What first got you and your husband into motorcycles? After our daughter and son grew up and left home, we needed a “thing.” My husband started looking at motorcycles. One day, while shopping for a motorcycle for him, we found one I liked too. We went back another day and it was still there. He bought it for me and that was all she wrote! We now have our “thing.” It has been a great thing for our marriage and allows us to have so much fun spending time together.

T h e R e a l D e a l “ B r e w e r ” c o nt i n u e d I know you and Jim have ridden some pretty far distances on your bikes. What have been some of your favorite destinations and why? This past summer we rode our motorcycles to Niagara Falls. We stopped in some amazing areas and enjoyed fantastic scenery along the way. My favorite stop was an overnight at Lake Seneca, one of the finger lakes in NY. We stayed at a beautiful vineyard on the lake. The previous year we took a trip to Maine and had more lobster in that week than I have had in my life! (Well, maybe not…)

What is your favorite thing about being a Realtor? I love being a Realtor with Keller Williams. The culture and values of KW are right in line with what is important to me. At KW it is about helping people and helping them do what is right for their situation. It is so satisfying to be able to help people with what is often the largest investment of their lives and to be a part of facilitating the start of a new chapter. Each day is different, sometimes it’s helping someone find a new home that they’ll love. Many people want to sell their home but don’t know where to start or what to do to prepare the home. In some cases, sadly, it is to help a family who has lost a loved one. In that situation especially, people have no idea where to begin with selling the home their family member has left behind. I especially have a heart for these situations. It is a special treat to have my husband and son work with me on our team. We have been blessed to have met and worked with so many great people. We’ve also made many new friends along the way.

What do you do that makes you happy? One of my favorite things, and something I am most thankful for is my quiet time in the morning with my first cup of coffee. I’m always amazed how this simple pleasure makes me so happy.

What’s your dream vacation? It may surprise you to hear that it would involve motorcycles. I would love to take a trip around Europe on bikes. It think it would also be very exciting to ride on the Autobahn.

Tell us a little about your family. My husband and I married young in the USAF. Our daughter and her husband married young in the USAF as well. We are blessed to have three adorable grandchildren; Luke is 4, Maddie is 2, and Craig is on the way and may be here by the time you read this! We can’t wait to meet him! Earlier this year, our son James came home from Korea and joined our KW team. He spent 4 years there teaching English.

Tell us something random about yourself that we don’t know. I was in a snake bagging contest at a rattlesnake rodeo when I was younger. I didn’t win, but it was fun!

If you were a drink, a libation, what would you be? Peach Green Tea Lemonade Moonshine! Or a Diet Coke because my husband loves them.

The Real Deal

Christine Notari My feet and I have always had a tumultuous relationship. At the age of four, I began taking ballet classes – a hobby which soon became a passion and later a career. Dancers rely on our feet for our livelihood, but we do not treat them very well. We force them to endure continuous heavy impact in paper-thin shoes, or sometimes no shoes, as we execute movements that the human body was not necessarily intended to do. Even worse, some ballerinas transition to dancing en pointe. This requires us to squeeze our feet into unforgiving wooden shoes and dance on the very tip of our toes. Needless to say, after countless sprained ankles, torn fascia, bruised and broken toes, and blisters, I now have significantly more foot issues than the average 28-year-old. After an injury prematurely ended my dance performance career, I switched to teaching dance classes. Helping young dancers learn and grow was certainly rewarding, but after only three years I realized that my heart was not in it. While teaching, I began working at a dance supply store to supplement my income. What began as only a side job eventually helped me discover my true métier. My favorite aspect of the job was fitting pointe shoes. To prevent injury, a pointe shoe must be precisely fitted to the dancer’s foot shape, while also taking into account the strength and flexibility of the dancer’s foot. On average this can take about 30-45 minutes, though there are several occasions that I have spent well over an hour trying to find the perfect pointe shoe for a dancer. Although it can be a long and arduous process, I enjoyed the problem-solving aspect of figuring out the “perfect fit” as well as the satisfaction of helping the dancers with such an important part of their lives. My interest in fitting pointe shoes is what led me to Foot Solutions. Our process of helping our customers overcome foot pain and fixing fitting issues appeals to both my creative side and my analytical side. Fitting shoes and orthotics can be like solving a puzzle, and I enjoy the challenge. There is nothing more rewarding than making someone feel good, and I am fortunate to be able to do that nearly every day. I have already developed some wonderful relationships with our customers, and I look forward to becoming more acquainted with our regulars as well as new customers. One facet of this job that I did not initially consider was how we must also overcome mental obstacles. A good majority of our customers experience insecurities about their feet. I am definitely guilty of this as well. Twenty-three years of dancing did not leave me with pretty feet, and I still have the over-

T h e R e a l D e a l “ N ota ri ” c o nt i n u e d whelming impulse to apologize whenever someone has to look at them. I know from experience that this insecurity can lead to feeling hopeless (and sometimes even stubborn) when it comes to our foot difficulties. There are few stores left where workers will actually sit down, look at a customer’s feet, and assist them with finding the right fit; which I am sure is a compounding factor to many foot problems. It can be difficult to admit to ourselves that we need help, but the truth is that everyone could benefit from a little assistance. Something to consider is that feet were simply not designed for hard, flat surfaces. Since we no longer primarily walk in the dirt and sand that our foot shape was intended for, we must adapt. We now need strong shoes and arch support to help our feet acclimate to this new environment we have created. Another thing to keep in mind is that no two feet are the same. That means that shoes are going to fit everyone differently. Some people may get lucky and find a shoe they love that happens to fit their feet perfectly, but this is rarely the case. Since it is impractical for shoemakers to make multiple variations in shape for each style, it is natural that some modification is necessary. I personally have to stretch almost every pair of shoes I buy, and replace the footbed with my custom orthotics. You cannot change your feet, so why not change your shoes so that you can feel comfortable? The most important part of my job is making people feel comfortable, both physically and mentally. There is no judgment when you walk through our doors. We want to make you feel better and most importantly, have fun! Marsha and Brian have done a fantastic job of integrating fashion with comfort, which makes the process a lot easier. Working here has not only helped ease my foot pain, it has also helped me discover my personal style and expanded my sense of fashion. My mother (who I have already converted to a Foot Solutions customer) likes to joke that she never expected feet to be my forte. I say that if our feet are miserable, we are miserable. I love that I have the chance to make feet and their owners happy, while working for and with such fun and talented people!

The Real Deal

Kate Bunch When I started working at Foot Solutions Sandy Springs I thought it would just be a summer job. I knew it would be a good place to work. I’ve known Miss Marsha and Brian my whole life and I had worked for them for a short time in the past while Miss Marsha and Mr. Mike went on vacation. I was not at all prepared for what it would be like working here. I’ve worked in retail before, but this was so completely different. In your average retail store, the sale was the most important part. It was so refreshing to work in a place where you are told, the goal, first and foremost, is to help people and not just make a sale. I’ll never forget the first day a customer hugged me because I helped her get out of pain. I didn’t foresee thatworking in a shoe store would help people and make a real impact on their quality of life. My favorite part of working at Foot Solutions is getting to know our customers. We chat with and really get to know people. By the time we are done working with someone, I probably know if they have kids, what they enjoy doing, what’s important to them, and how to better help them. Sometimes we’re helping our customers find just the right shoe for a trip, or just a good, go-to-shoe for everyday. Getting to discuss style and how to wear certain shoes and colors is something I definitely didn’t expect to be doing on a daily basis at a place called Foot Solutions, but I do! It’s really a family affair here - both in the sense that we all work together so much we feel like family, but also in the sense that we convert our families over to the comfortable shoe way of life. I’ve dragged my mom in on multiple occasions to show her some shoes that I’d fallen in love with. Like most daughters, I’ve been trying to persuade my mom to update some of what she wears for quite a while. It wasn’t that she dressed poorly, but things had just been kind of the same for a while. I had tried everything to talk her into trying something new. It wasn’t until Brian gave her a good talking to that she actually let me take her to buy skinny jeans. Even she was surprised at how much one piece of clothing can update your entire closet. It was like magic. We bought a pair of medium wash skinny jeans, and a pair of black skinny jeans. With a couple pairs of our shoes and some statement jewelry, it was like

53

I N SP I RE • INNOVAT I O N

T h e R e a l D e a l “ B u n c h ” C o nt i n u e d my mom had a whole new wardrobe. Heading into fall all she needs to do is pick a couple pairs of closed toe shoes, a nice fall scarf and a long cozy cardigan to throw on over different kinds of shirts. I look forward to many more adventures with my mom and our customers. As we are now into the fall season the two questions I am hearing the most from customers are: “What kind of socks should I wear with these shoes?” and, “How do I wear booties with *insert various cuts of pants here*?” The answers to both of these questions are actually deceptively simple, and the answer to one fixes the same problem in the other. Essentially, there are three things you can do with that pesky little area where your shoes meet your pants. As far as pants go, if it’s a skinny jean or pant, you can tuck them in the top or, roll the edge a couple times. If your pants have a straight leg, let them stay out.. My personal favorite look for fall and winter is to roll the edge of my pants up just a couple times so there is some separation between the top of the bootie and the bottom of my jeans. Yes, it is ok for some skin to show. I normally wear some kind of fun sock with this look, when it’s cold enough. Slouch a crew length sock around the ankle for another fun look. A sock that just barely shows over the top edge of the bootie, perhaps with an interesting top line, is also a good choice. With both of these ideas, the key is just to try it out for an entire day, even if it’s totally different from anything you’ve ever done before. Normally, it only takes a very short amount of time testing out and living in a new style for you to get used to the look and feel. It’s these small changes, wearing a different cut of pants, or wearing your pants a new way that can breathe new life into your look. Come see me at the store and let’s visit!

Plaid is nothing revolutionary and I doubt there’s a man alive withought at least one pair of jeans. The art of updating is in the details. With slight changes in cut of both shirts and pants you can freshen up your look to the delight of yourself and your family. Gentleman, let’s be honest. You love when your wife looks her best, so be a doll and do the same for her. More modern jeans have a slightly snugger fit. Do not despair. With this fit comes a little stretch and ease. I recently introduced my father to Mavi and though different than those Levi’s 550’s, they look great and won’t crunch you where the sun don’t shine. Grey is the new khaki. Like khaki, grey can be worn with almost anything. Navy and grey are not a revolutionary combination. Again, the cut and details modernize things. Men love stripes, because stripes are a visual texture. The abstract texture of this Desigual shirt might seem extremely different, but stripes are lines, and abstract lines just make things more interesting. Mode Marché is one of the few places in the US to carry Desigual for men. While women may not have to match their handbag to their shoes anymore, men should still do their very best to match their belt to their shoes. In this example, the blue matches the outsole of these Fluchos, but grey would have been an acceptable belt color as well, just a little less special.
