The Real Runway It’s a cloudy Sunday just outside the city of Milano in Mazzo, Italy. James, Marsha, and I shuffle our way through a crowd of people to ascend to shoe heaven. An enormous glass structure flows like a ribbon above our heads and covers the central walkway leading to all 16 halls of the massive Fiera Milano convention center. The 4th largest convention center in the world, the halls of Fiera Milano contain 345,000 square meters of show space. This week it was the home of MICAM, the largest shoe market in the world. We weren’t sure what to expect. We had attended all of the large shoe shows here in the states, but now we were stepping into a whole new league. Armed with almost no plan at all, we went to the one place we knew: Think! Each season at our local shoe shows we are able to see only some of the Think! collection, so we were eager to touch and feel all the many styles that we had only experienced in catalogs and on-screen. The bustling booth filled with shoes from Kopfing, Austria was a delicacy. We were more excited than kids in a candy shop. After a delightful visit, we scampered off to see the other European lines we already carry. One of our biggest reasons to go was to see what all we had been missing with the paired-down sampling of each line at the US shows. Visiting all of the other familiar brands took about two hours total. Walking out of the last booth on our list, a puzzling look of terror slowly wafted across our faces. As we looked at each other it was clear we all had the same question… What do we do now? Fortunately, at about that time I heard from my friend Sue. Sue owns the Foot Solutions in Scottsdale, AZ. She threw us a lifeline. Sue and one of her employees, Sarah, were there walking the show with Bob Schwartz. Bob, the owner of Eneslow shoes in New York, had much more experience at the show and showed us the ropes. It was an exhausting day. If memory serves, we walked about 14 miles that day. Draining as it may have been, our adrenaline carried us through the jet lag and led us to discover some amazing new brands - some of which you’ve now seen in the store. To make a long story short, after four days of “shoe-showing” we made the decision to bring in two new lines: Hartjes and Tomasi. The reaction to these has already been overwhelmingly excellent. Over the next few seasons, we plan to bring more and more exciting new brands back from MICAM.

It wasn’t all work, of course. We stayed in Saronno, a small city of 39,000 just north of Milan. Each day after shoe-showing we ventured into the city to take in the sights, and the shopping. While walking down one of the main shopping avenues, my mother noticed a storefront with lettering that said, “City streets are the real runways.” It was fashion week in Milan and that storefront spoke the truth. We decided it would be fun to capture some of those real life “models” and share our findings with you. A few take-a-ways on our findings… One, you can look “killer” at any age. Two, buy some really epic sunglasses. It seemed each time we found someone whose look we loved, they were wearing show-stopping eyewear. Three, yes you can wear “that” with a dress. (Insert just about anything into the “that” space.) Four, if you’re avoiding a white sneaker or a thick white bottom on a sandal, they may kick you out of Europe. Five, leave room in your suitcase or take an empty one. In Milan, you will end up buying more than you thought. The idea of city streets being the real runways is not new. Famous designers have forever talked about getting inspiration from people they pass in towns across the country. If regular people are influencers of famous designers, what stops us from feeling confident about trying something new? Psychologists far wiser than I may have a great answer to that question, but my job is just to nudge you to take yourself a little less seriously and have some fun. What is that saying? Life’s short… Dance like no one is watching… Try a little something new? This season, we’ve changed the format of the look book to give you some insight as to what real people on the street were wearing and help you to see some of the ways that people are pairing different clothing and shoe options. I hope these pictures give you some ideas or jumping off points for how to weave in some of the changes in shoe trends to your wardrobe and mindset. I’ve never been the biggest fan of change. Few people have this talent. Yet the struggle to avoid change, to me, can often bring about more stress and anxiety than the embrace of change. For example; perhaps for some reason you’re being “forced” to change your everyday footwear. Our bodies tend to change whether we like it or not. Often we (reluctantly) find a shoe that will work, but because it is not what we are comfortable with we avoid it. We think it doesn’t look good with our clothes. Here’s the catch… If you update a couple pieces of your wardrobe, the embrace of change blossoms into a fresh new you. This is a conversation that we have with our shoppers regularly.

Many aspects of what we do here are rewarding. We bill ourselves as “more than just a shoe store.” Our focus on “Fit. Function. Fashion.” armed with the knowledge of biomechanics allows us to help those in pain and protect those who aren’t. Daily I tell people, “I didn’t know my feet hurt until my parents bought this store.” - a true statement. Often, I find that people saying they are “totally comfortable” are really just as comfortable as they have ever been. Helping someone avoid surgery for simple forefoot pain is amazing, but nothing can top hearing from someone that they are having fun discovering new style. When we pair the function of better footwear with the delight of helping someone update their style, the endorphins flow like Niagara. Obviously, not everyone is as adverse to change as I. Not everyone needs our hand to guide them through implementing new style choices. This is just a simple reminder that we are here and enjoy what our unique position in the market allows. There are countless shoe stores, and there are infinite choices online. We believe you can’t buy what we do online and that is why we are here. Thank you all for your support over the years. As we continue to grow, thanks to your loyalty we have added a few new faces. Make sure to meet Jack and Marcia the next time you’re in. They have been a great addition to our family. Hopefully you’ll enjoy this new look book format, as well as the collection of shoes we’ve crafted together for this spring / summer season. We forever wish to be heroes on your quest for fit, function, and fashion.

Goodbye Convention, Hello Intention

A real–life example of everything you’ve believed being thrown by the wayside; a simple white lace up sneaker paired with a fabulous Chanel dress. This may be my favorite picture of the trip. Distracted by the immense beauty of our surroundings, I almost missed getting this snapshot. What is it about this outfit that makes it so perfect? Is it that she is wearing Chanel? Could it be the Hermes bag? Am I giving her too much credit for having a dog leash in deep green and her bag in ecru, one of my favorite color combinations? What we can not see is her “say something” sunglasses. Perhaps she she just wanted to be comfortable and didn’t give her “look” andy thought, but there is no denying she looks fantastic.

“I’m looking for a shoe to go with everything.”

The life long search is over! If I had a nickel... So often people are looking for that one shoe to go with everything. If I ask them what that looks like, a typical reply would be something like a black slip–on. I understand the utility of that, but perhaps something else would work better. You wouldn’t wear a black slip–on with shorts. You probably wouldn’t wear a black slip–on with a sun dress. World wide approval has been given for a white lace up, and fashion sneakers in general, to be your shoe to go with everything.

Joy I think I’m hilarious whenever Brian and I are out and people ask what we do… I tell them that we sell houses and we sell shoes. They’re the two perfect businesses, because you’re either on your feet or in your home. I work in Real Estate for my family’s business, founded by my wonderful Mother: Brewer Home Team. Officially, I manage everything that goes on and help keep our team motivated. But what I really do is realize my mother’s vision of helping create a stress-free moving experience. During her and my father’s time in the USAF, we moved constantly. So much so we really learned to find the joy in all aspects. Packing and un-packing is a great reason to spring clean and de-clutter. A new area means new friends to meet and local treasures to discover, and in doing so we’ve created amazing bonds with families across the country! If you ever meet my mother, you’ll see she has a heart of gold. She has no idea how much money she makes and readily gives it away to charities and people in need when she encounters them. She truly decided to start a real estate business to use her skills to help others find the joy in making a move. As the Man Behind the Curtain in our business, my everyday work is executing that vision. Joy. Then Saturday comes and, as you surely know, instead of kicking off the weekend I come and play shoe store with Brian, Marsha, Christine, and the team. Over the past year I have been trained and educated on the biomechanical aspects of what we do, as well as participated in the buying trips to Vegas, Milan, and locally. I have worked with customers looking for the next trend on its way from Europe, as well as customers looking for the squishiest around-thehouse shoe possible. It is amazing to me the Joy that we are able to bring to our clients. From people whose doctor said you’ll never be comfortable again without surgery, to someone with minor issues that we can fix with great shoes. Working with Brian and Marsha, I’ve had first-time clients get up and hug me because the things we do in shoes relieved pain they thought they’d have forever. We have clients who come and visit every week just to say hi and show off their cute outfits with our shoes. What does this new experience spark? Joy! I suppose what I’m saying is that I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to serve all of our clients. I love being able to bring Joy to people during the week by helping them find homes of their dreams, and on the weekends by helping people find the perfect Fit. Function and Fashion. So maybe I’m bragging, and I hope your week is as Joyful as mine.

It’s hard to put my finger on exactly what it is that makes these outfits so perfect. I suppose with effortless perfection you just know it when you see it. Her white pants and shirt are nothing all that special. In this look it is the duster that elevates the simplicity to extraordinary. Again, we see a trendy lace up is the choice of this couple. Life-Changing Magic “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” has been a popular and much talked about book that has sparked an unbelievably big movement for decluttering one’s life, and is now even a television program. Well, to me, the information that follows is just as life changing to those who choose to apply it. Every day I see people whose lives could be improved by applying the principles of careful stretching. The information we will consider is applicable to our whole bodies but, for now, we will apply it only to feet. The information included here will give some background information and beginning stretches. I will add resource information afterward for those who would like to further pursue the benefits of stretching. You may think that stretching is no new thing and might be a little less effective than what you are currently doing to stay fit. But new things are happening in this area of exercise that bring big benefits. Why stretch? I always heard we were supposed to do that before running or any strenuous exercise, but it’s just so much quicker to skip that and move on. Stretching is so much more than preparation for a strenuous activity. It IS the ultimate activity. Stretching at least a few days a week will accomplish so much more than you would expect. According to Aaron Mattes, author of “Active Isolated Stretching”, flexibility and proper stretching have played an important role for enhancing performance, rehabilitation and wellness. Almost every day, I see clients in our store who would benefit from careful and informed stretching practices either to improve balance, range of motion, pain relief or at the very least, prevention of all these things. We are all aware of the fact that painful feet, ankles, knee and hips, loss of balance and risk of falling are just a factor life that increases as we age. But what if it could be somewhat reversed or prevented? As you age, connective tissues called ligaments can begin to stretch out, reducing the height of your arch leading to flatter feet. This can cause pain and the loss of stability. Additionally, the gradual process of loss of muscle mass occurs in everyone to some degree but more rapidly in people who are not physically active. Aging promotes atrophy with lost elasticity of muscle and connective tissue. Inactivity further leads to muscle weaknesses. Weaknesses lead to strength and flexibility imbalances. Flexibility promotes improved blood circulation, oxygenation, the nourishment of cells, tissues and organs all of which restores health and wellness.

19

I N SP I RE • T HE RE A L RU NWAY

“ L i f e - C h a n g i n g M a g i c ” C o nt i n u e d Flexibility is not a general factor but is specific to each joint. Work or exercise that produce repeated overuse of the same muscles day after day confines joints within a range of motion and tends to reduce flexibility. Trauma, overuse and age are the most common causes of muscle tightness resulting in protective flexor postures. In case you think this information is only for “older” people, be aware that this is a process that begins in your 30’s. Giving some attention to these things sooner rather than later could really result in increased comfort as well as the ability to move and travel and enjoy life longer. The good news is that the exercises that will do this magic work for you are not hard to do, can be easily done at home and do not require any special equipment. Below are some good suggestions to try on your own. Several tips to remember are as follows: Start with gentle stretching and keep it slow. Slowly move into the stretch and immediately begin moving out of the stretch. Do not hold the stretch. A slow, controlled rhythmic stretch of no greater than two seconds provides for a neurologically sound technique that does not trigger a reflexive, antagonistic contraction which inhibits the stretch potential of the muscle. Stretch gently just past the point of slight irritation for 1 1/2 to 2 seconds then release the pressure and return to starting position. Repeat as needed. The ability to relax is important because it decreases tension, which increases the ability to function effectively and efficiently. Being well hydrated also helps the body to respond quicker and better. TOE AND ANKLE STRETCH Stand with a hand on the back of a chair or railing if needed. Standing on one foot, hold the other foot several inches off the floor. •Flex your foot as far as possible. •Point your foot down as far as possible but leave the toes flexed upward. •Keep the foot pointed down and also point the toes down. -Repeat several times for each foot. Another good stretch for the toes is to put toes flat on the floor and raise the heel as much as possible, bending the toes to the point of feeling they are somewhat separated from the rest of the foot. Repeat several times on each foot. ANKLE STRENGTHENING •Place one foot slightly ahead of the other. Stand by the back of the chair to use as needed. •Shift weight somewhat forward •Come up on toes very slowly •Lower heels to floor and bend knees very slowly. •Repeat several times for each leg. On this one, the slower you move, the more productive the exercise. When thinking of toe stretches, toe scrunching or “marble lifting” is a common foot strengthening exercise often used to address weak or stiff feet. This particular action promotes a further shortening of the muscles in the toes that can lead to a decrease in joint range of motion. This same muscle pattern can lead to hammertoes.

20

SP R I N G / SUMMER 201 9

Tight forefoot muscles stemming from overloading the front of the foot as a result of positive heels, excessive flip flop wearing or just poor posture can generate tight, gripping toes. One product we have in the store to help with this is the Toe Socks that spread each of the toes. This can be worn during at home hours or during the night. Cramping will often result while stretching after years of tensing them with every step. Start with short times of stretching for only a few seconds. Cramping will subside with regular practice. At the same time, it is good to consider the types of shoes you wear. Flip-flops, poorly connecting sandals, mules or clogs and minimally constructed shoes like ballet flats or heels cause your toes to work overtime just keeping your shoes on. All the muscle length you acquire with exercise will be gone as soon as you tense your feet again. The muscles in the calves are considered part of the extrinsic foot muscles. Long term effects of wearing positive heel shoes include shortened fibers in the lower leg. Be patient with this stretch that follows and gentle. You can’t undo years of shortening with a week of stretching. Also, note the position of your hips and torso. Keep yourself vertical and straight. CALF STRETCH •Beside an armchair, put one foot slightly behind the other.. •Bend both knees keeping the feet flat (be sure not to raise heels) on the floor to stretch the lower calf muscles (be sure not to raise heels). •Straighten the leg of the back foot and press your hips forward to stretch the upper calf muscles. •Slowly repeat both stretches and never “hold” the stretch. Move slowly into the stretch as far as you can without pain and then immediately move slowly out of the stretch. •Reverse feet and do the same movements for the other leg. HAMSTRINGS Super tight calf muscles can become super tight hamstrings. •Move to face the seat of your chair. Place your hands flat on the seat. Back your pelvis up until your hips are slightly behind your ankles. Step closer to the chair if you need to. Tight leg muscles may pull your tailbone down toward the floor. Try to gently lift your tailbone up, away from the floor, increasing the stretch down the leg. •Again, stretch very gently and slowly into and then immediately out of these stretches. Quick, strong stretches cause the muscles to contract to protect themselves. The aim here is longer and stronger muscles. The muscles will lengthen more with a slow gentle movement. TOE LIFTS You may not even believe this is possible but the muscles in our feet can move our toes just like our fingers. But the toes have been bound up and not used for so long it’s hard to imagine, much less accomplish. With your bare foot facing forward, see if you can lift your big toe without moving the other toes with it. Practice this until it becomes easy and then move on to each of the other toes. If necessary, start by holding the other toes down with your fingers to get the feel of it. As your skill improves, you can practice lifting and setting down each individual toe. While doing the toe stretches, notice whether your big toe rotates toward the little toes. If so, practice pulling the big toe away from the other toes.

21

I N SP I RE • T HE RE A L RU NWAY

“ L i f e - C h a n g i n g M a g i c ” C o nt i n u e d TOE SPREADING Wearing tight toe box shoes causes the muscles that pull the toes together to become tight and stiff while also causing the muscles that pull the toes apart to be come weak. To further strengthen your toes, just spread them. Although this sounds simple, it can be hard to do. Can you see the floor between your toes when you spread them? Wearing toe socks or using your fingers between your toes will help get you started. It can take months of spreading your toes before you see a lot of progress but then, one day you will be surprised to feel the movement all through your foot and up to the lower leg. Keep at it! EXCEPTIONS Many of the people we see here at Foot Solutions have had foot surgeries and may even have hardware permanently placed their feet. Obviously, those feet move a little differently and some parts won’t move at all. In those cases, exercise what you can and modify where you need to. Pain should never result from any of the exercises. Skip some altogether if you need to and do what you can. Another conversation that has arisen over and over is the question of whether barefoot walking is better than shoes. There are even shoes to protect your skin but give a more barefoot like experience to your walking. Certainly, our feet were designed for barefoot walking on uneven surfaces. In fact the design of our feet is exquisite and unbelievably complicated. However, we are rarely on natural surfaces or barefooted. The continual pounding of our flexible, curved feet against a hard, flat inflexible surface takes a toll. Something has to give and it will usually be the foot that does the giving. Shoes can protect your feet from some of this wear and tear but so many of our shoes now are soft and flexible just like feet and give little help to the problem. The best solutions are to wear strong, protective shoes when they need protecting and exercise our feet enough to be stronger to work well when we can go barefooted. Unfortunately, many people are either unable or unwilling to do this. You may already have enough damage to your feet that you really need the better shoes and arch support all the time. Or if you have some weakness that could be reversed, you have to make the commitment to work on it and make better choices both for shoes and exercise. Then, that word comes to mind again - Balance. Balance for our bodies and balance in our lives. It’s definitely something worth thinking about and working toward. Miles To Go Before I Sleep

We talk to so many people headed off to far corners of the world for adventure. All of these people have one thing in common; they want to make the most of their trip and see all that they can. We always suggest a sandal that has a backstrap and will be secure on the foot when headed out to sightsee. If your foot is securely in the shoe, it will help keep your legs from getting tired, your toes from getting sore, and your day from being long. Coverage is in. Look cute and feel great. She does.

Ballet Takes A Break

The timeless favorite of women takes an official break this season. The loafer, which has been a staple for men and women for ages, has fully surpassed the ballet flat in the slip–on shoe category. From tasseled to penney, these versatile slip–ons will not lead you in the wrong direction. For the past few years, the “boy for girl” tailored look has changed many clothing items. The perfectly paired loafer has done it in footwear. If you’re looking for that flat you’ve always worn, there’s a reason it’s harder to find. They are on a much needed break from mainstream style.

Cool In His Kicks

There’s nothing new about jeans and a t-shirt. What was once weekend errand running attire can now be a hip put–together style. To make this style work, ditch the baggy denim and try something a little more fitted and add a cuff at the ankle. T-shirts are now for more than just cutting the grass or lounging at home, but let’s take it a step up from the free graphic Fruit of the Loom someone gave you to advertise their business. T-shirts made from softer pima cotton, sport materials, or just with better shapes are made by all designers. Try a v-neck t-shirt to up your style. Of course this look wouldn’t be complete without a great pair of fashion sneakers. Socks optional.

The Smallest Touches

The difference between dressing and impressing is often in the tiniest details. The gentleman has on jeans, a dress shirt, a waist-coat, and some shoes. An ensemble not unlike many men would wear. However, the small addition of the orange touches on the shoes, waist-coat, and pocket square really make things pop. I also love his sunglasses with the tortoise frames.
