DEAR NOTRE DAME COMMUNITY,

The theme of our NDJournal this year is “Blessed to Belong.” This simple phrase encompasses the true identity of Notre Dame High School: its Catholic and spiritual foundation coupled with a profound sense of community and family. As I reflect on the state of our world today, I recognize the hunger that people have to discover both God and community in their lives. When a family inquires about a Notre Dame education for their child, they often cite these very reasons why they selected Notre Dame, for truly all of us are “Blessed to Belong” to this special community.

As you browse the pages of the NDJournal, you will see the phrase “Blessed to Belong” come alive in the stories of our students, faculty and staff, alumni, the Board, and so many other stakeholders who recognize Notre Dame as their second home.

“Blessed to Belong” showcases the people who make ND so special. In these pages, you will read about the resiliency of our school administration and Campus Ministry teams to enable our seniors to attend their Kairos Retreat at the Malvern Retreat House and allow them to experience one of the signature moments of their time here at ND; the dedication of our faculty who continue to teach “out of the box” in these unprecedented times; charismatic ND alumni who have cast their nets to a wider shore and are making a difference in our world; Violet Williamson ‘24 and her MCT Championship Diving; our team championships including the Hockey MCT Championship and Baseball CVC Championship; the incredible display of student-artists at our Spring Arts Festival and finally, the comedic success of our spring musical, Bye Bye Birdie

“Blessed to Belong” is also an invitation to look outward as evidenced by ND’s partnership with Players Development Academy (PDA) for the construction of a $1.2 million turf field with lights to help better accommodate our growing soccer and lacrosse programs. In addition, thanks to the generosity of our donors, our annual Spring Fling raised monies to support the renovation of our two art rooms, helping to provide updated spaces for our students to cultivate their creativity and artistic talents.

The ND Board of Governors also commissioned a new Strategic Plan (please see page 2), Building on Excellence, which unveiled a series of strategic initiatives that will continue to build momentum in enrollment, finance, advancement and our college and school counseling programs.

As I now enter my fourth year as President of Notre Dame, I truly feel “Blessed to Belong” and serve in this leadership role. Thank you for your support and prayers.

BUILDING ON EXCELLENCE

A STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE

This summary review of year one of Notre Dame’s Strategic Plan, Building on Excellence, provides a snapshot of the extraordinary leadership and work of the Notre Dame Board of Governors, the eight Committees of the Board, faculty and staff, as well as many stakeholders who have invested in the process to create the conditions for Notre Dame to continue its excellence as a premier Catholic college-preparatory high school living the Mercy Core Values.

YEAR ONE SUMMARY REVIEW OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS

We invite you to read this summary and also visit the Notre Dame website, under the Governance tab, to review a comprehensive guide to the Strategic Plan that further details the goals and objectives that will propel us into our exciting future. All year one goals listed below have been ACCOMPLISHED

GOAL 1: MISSION AND CATHOLIC IDENTITY

+ Creation of a new Catholic Mission Enhancement Committee of the Board of Governors

+ Creation of a new Notre Dame Diversity Statement by the Diversity Committee

+ Rebuilding of Campus Ministry programs after COVID–19

+ Creation of a new Campus Ministry wing for community events

GOAL 2: GOVERNANCE AND LEADERSHIP

+ Administration of parent and student surveys at the end of the academic year, will be done annually and data collected for analysis by Board and leadership team of the school

+ Revision of Board of Governors meeting agenda to include larger amount of time for strategic discussion

+ Creation of a new Board Dashboard with Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and metrics for the various committees and teams

+ Creation of Action Plans that align with the objectives of the five goal areas of the new strategic plan

+ Develop and administer benchmark survey for annual college and school guidance parent and student satisfaction

+ Secure consultant from American School Counselor Association (ASCA) in the development of a comprehensive College and School Counseling plan

+ Revamp our learning needs program, hiring of a McCauley Studies Coordinator, formerly our Learning Needs Coordinator, for Fall 2022

GOAL 4: OPERATIONAL VITALITY [FINANCE, FACILITIES, AND TECHNOLOGY]

+ Creation of a new Technology Plan that augments the capabilities of ND’s IT infrastructure and leverages capabilities into the classroom

+ Creation of a new Facilities Plan which is the forerunner for a Master Campus plan

+ Develop a long-term budget that will analyze key metrics for long-term financial success of ND including the Family First Tuition model

+ Implement a budget process that allowed key staff and faculty to meet with administration regarding individual cost centers

GOAL 5: OPERATIONAL VITALITY [MARKETING, ENROLLMENT, ALUMNI, FUNDING PROGRAMS]

+ Creation of a new Enrollment and Marketing Plan (EMM) which is annually reviewed by the Board of Governors

+ Creation of a Comprehensive Advancement Plan (CAP) which is annually reviewed by the Board of Governors

+ Development of a new Guide to the Brand with market research of key and salient themes based on feedback from stakeholders

+ Further develop alumni-focused events and programs that will better engage our alumni and deepen those relationships

NOTRE DAME GOES GREEN

Pope Francis calls upon us to be upstanding disciples of our earth, showing the importance of preserving God’s creation that we call home. It is Notre Dame’s mission to use our Catholic values to guide us in the direction of protecting our planet and its people. To that end, last spring Notre Dame began the process of installing solar panels. The decision to convert ND into a solar-energy run school required thoughtful and dedicated research. The plan had to be approved by the Board of Governors and the Diocese of Trenton, taking into consideration the economic benefits to our school and the local community.

Solar energy reduces air pollution, water usage and is known to be one of the most effective means of combating climate change. ND was excited to partner with an alumni-owned company, Geoscape Solar, to install solar panels onto the roof of the school.

On the weekend of November 14, Notre Dame’s hallways, classrooms and offices became vacant as the electricity was shut off in order to convert to a school that runs on solar power. Beyond the positive environmental impact, there are also economic and academic benefits to solar energy. The cost savings can be applied to new academic opportunities

for students and faculty. “Whenever you go green like this, you are going to be saving money that you would be putting towards more fossil fuel energies,” said President Jennings. The installation of solar panels was a learning opportunity for students on steps needed to take care of the environment for current and future generations. “It provides an academic awareness for students to figure out from a scientific standpoint how we can better harness those natural elements that produce this kind of energy,” Mr. Jennings explained.

The journey to make ND green does not end with the solar panels. The lights throughout the halls and classrooms have been changed to LED lighting. LED lights are energy-efficient and have a long lifespan, reducing how frequently the lights need to be replaced.

Notre Dame is currently looking to become a Green Ribbon School that prides itself on environmental excellence. The solar panels and LED lights are just the beginning of this process and we continue to discover how we can move forward in terms of sustainability and ecological awareness toward our planet.

NEW SOCCER/LACROSSE TURF FIELD

Notre Dame’s new Campus Ministry wing opened in the Fall 2021. President Ken Jennings said, “Campus Ministry is an integral part of the spiritual life of our Notre Dame students. Our students needed a new light and airy space that would allow for quiet reflection as well as a space for discussion and prayer with classmates and the Campus Ministers.” The new space is located next to the Chapel which is accessible by an adjoining door. On the other side of the Chapel is our Service Room, which completes the Campus Ministry wing. Funding for the project was provided by proceeds from the 2021 Spring Fling Auction, the school’s largest fundraiser of the year.

The new wing was designed with the help of Dr. Michael St. Pierre, Executive Director of the Catholic Campus Ministry Association. Dr. St. Pierre put the Campus Ministers in touch with several universities across the country to get some ideas on how to best arrange the space for our students. “It is such a blessing to have this new larger space. We can accommodate more students to come and rest awhile, have a cup of hot chocolate and relax with their friends,” said Kathy Maley, one of the Campus Ministers. “Our students energize our program, and with the new space comes endless new opportunities for the Campus Ministry programs.”

2022–2023

The Board of Governors welcomes four newly appointed members.

MARY MASON ‘02 ELLSWORTH is an alumna of Notre Dame High School and currently teaches World History and Introduction to Sociology and Psychology as a member of the Social Studies Department. She moderates various clubs including SHADES, Feminism, and Irish-American, as well as the Academic Strength and Conditioning Center. Mary serves as a member of the Diversity Committee and Honor Board. She has her Bachelor’s degrees in History and Secondary Education from Saint Joseph's University.

MOLLY FOLEY is the Director of Global Strategic Marketing, Ethicon Biosurgery at Johnson & Johnson. She is entering her 25th year at JNJ and has held multiple sales and marketing positions within Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices.

At the core of her value set is her family and being a mom to her four children with her husband, George. Together they are raising their children with the support of Catholic School education at St. Paul’s and Notre Dame. Molly can oftentimes be seen on the sidelines as she coached her daughter, Caroline, all seven years of CYO hoops while at St. Paul's. Her passion for being a part of a team with a strong culture and winning spirit is evident at home, school and work. She is honored to be serving on the Notre Dame Board and looks forward to giving back to this special community.

DONALD HAAS, MD, MPH, FACC is the Medical Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support and Ventricular Assist Programs, and the Director of the Comprehensive Heart Failure Program at Thomas Jefferson University – Abington Jefferson Health.

Dr. Haas says his children have benefitted from Notre Dame far more than he ever envisioned since he enrolled his first of four children in 2013. The school has been foundational in preparing them to excel at some of the most challenging and demanding universities in the U.S. Beyond receiving outstanding academic preparation, he said his children thrived in the uniquely familial culture of Notre Dame. As they mature into adults, he appreciates the strong Catholic values reinforced daily at the school. Ultimately, he cares deeply about the welfare of Catholic education, particularly when it is done well.

JIM O’BOYLE comes to the Notre Dame High School board with more than 25 years of experience in education, serving in senior administrative roles in colleges and private high schools. Currently a member of the leadership gifts team at Princeton University, his work with nonprofits has been widespread, including capital campaigns, development assessments, strategic planning, board leadership and counsel, volunteer engagement, and marketing and publications efforts.

Jim is married to Mary Ellen O’Boyle, a pre-K 4 teacher at St. Paul School in Princeton, and both share in the adventure of raising their seven children and, now, two grandchildren.

IN GOAL 2 under GOVERNANCE AND LEADERSHIP in the new strategic plan, Building on Excellence, Objective 2.6 states the following: “To administer annual satisfaction surveys for parents and students.” At the close of the 21–22 academic year, Notre Dame administered these satisfaction surveys to parents in all grades and received a total of 310 responses. The student surveys were administered to grades 9-11, since the seniors had their own exit survey. There were 429 completed student survey responses. HERE ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS.

Congratulations Class of 2022

On Sunday, June 5, family, friends, administration, faculty and staff, along with Dr. Vincent de Paul Schmidt, the Superintendent for Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Trenton, gathered at the CURE Arena for the 62nd Annual Commencement Ceremony for the Notre Dame Class of 2022. Their Baccalaureate Mass was held the night before in the Notre Dame auditorium and celebrated by the Most Reverend David O’Connell, C.M., J.C.D.

The Class of 2022 was exceptional! They struggled through two years of pandemic restrictions and brought life back to our school with their determination and vitality. They were accepted to impressive colleges and universities. Columbia University, Yale University, Fordham University, John Hopkins University, the United States Military Academy, West Point, Boston University and Cornell University are just a sampling of the colleges and universities to which our graduates were accepted.

In addition, over 30 student-athletes will continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Some of them will be competing at the Division 1 level in their respective sports at the University of Tennessee, Bucknell University, Wagner College, Rutgers University, Towson University, Monmouth University and Hofstra University just to name a few. We are also proud to announce that the Class of 2022 was awarded an impressive $30,158,902 in scholarships. In her parting speech, Principal Barlow said, “Class of 2022, how far you have come and how much has happened. I want to thank you for breathing life back into Notre Dame. This school year has been fantastic because you remembered how it used to be; you were all in. You drank up every opportunity, experience, and moment. You taught the underclassmen our traditions and showed them our Irish Spirit. You led by example with courage, passion, understanding and kindness. Class of 2022, the halls of Notre Dame will not be the same without you.”

2022 RETIREES

Best wishes to our Notre Dame Faculty and Staff who retired this year. We are grateful for their many years of dedicated service to the students of Notre Dame High School. At the Class of 2022 Commencement, Principal Joanna Barlow commented, “I would like to make a special note of three Catholic educators who committed their lives to the students of Notre Dame. They retire this year and we send them off with our prayers and heartfelt gratitude. May you never underestimate the difference you have made in the lives of countless young scholars.”

I have now been working at ND for three years and love it just like I did when I was a student. Now that my son is a sophomore, I look forward to him making those same memories.”

I was blessed with a 38-year teaching career in public school where I tried my best to model my faith in my classroom. During that time, I kept a close connection with Notre Dame and tutored many Notre Dame students. It was always my hope I would finish my teaching career at Notre Dame High School. That dream became a reality in the fall of 2018. I am so happy teaching here at Notre Dame – I feel I have come full circle and have returned home.”

ROSE FITZPATRICK ‘75 STEVENSON College and School Counselor

“When I began working, I was a marketing manager at a financial institution. I resigned after five years to raise my children. After 12 years I was ready to return to work but wanted work that was more meaningful to me than my experience in marketing. I was hired at ND as an assistant in the Guidance Office. I enjoyed the school environment and two years later returned to school for a Master’s in School Counseling so I could work directly with teenagers.”

“I walked into ND to observe the Art teacher and I asked if she wanted to start a Ceramic Program. Her eyes lit up like saucers, she said "Yes! It would be fabulous to have clay as part of our Art curriculum. That September, ceramic history was made. I have been at ND for 27 years and I still love my job.”

“I returned to teaching because I realized I missed it. I missed not only teaching and interacting with the students, but also learning from them every day. It is a joy watching a student's face when they finally understand a difficult concept.

I decided to return to Notre Dame (and to stay for so many years) because we are a faith-based community that is dedicated to educating the whole person as well as being a family!”

CONGRATULATIONS to our 2021-2022 TEACHERS OF THE YEAR:

Mona McCauley, English Department Chair, has been with Notre Dame for two years. Her students say she makes English class fun, interesting, and exciting; she goes out of her way to make class engaging and creates a classroom environment that promotes open communication. She understands her students, listens to their opinions with an open mind and makes them feel heard.

Jim Treacy will soon celebrate 22 years at Notre Dame. He teaches Physical Education, is an assistant in the Weight Room and coaches both football and ice hockey. He is also a moderator for the Catholic Athletes for Christ program. According to his students, Mr. Treacy makes learning fun and interesting. He is a beloved colleague, coach and a dedicated teacher who cares about everyone.

Christian Olla ’18 is a team member in the Technology Department. In his role, he works with faculty and staff on technology problems and issues on a daily basis. Words used to describe Christian are: positive, helpful, respectful, pleasant, considerate, hard-working and accommodating. Faculty members also said he manages his job responsibilities effectively and conscientiously; always quick to respond to problems, solving them and following through. Christian’s knowledge base is expansive and he explains complex issues in terms that are understandable.

YEARBOOK DEDICATION — MRS. VALERIE LUEDEKE

Mrs. Valerie Luedeke is the recipient of the 2022 Yearbook Dedication. Mrs. Luedeke has been a dedicated faculty member in the English Department at Notre Dame since 2017. She teaches AP English Language and Composition and Honors English. She earned a Master‘s Degree in English Literature from Seton Hall University and a Bachelor of Arts in both English and Education from Bucknell University. She holds a certification as a high school English teacher.

When asked what the yearbook dedication meant to her, Mrs. Luedeke said, "The students of Notre Dame are very special to me, and I thank them for this honor. The yearbook dedication represents all that I love about teaching at Notre Dame. I appreciate the opportunity to work in an environment where it is possible to get to know students and connect individually with them, which is the best way to inspire learning. I will treasure the 2022 Yearbook as well as a happy memory of the unexpected and touching dedication."

Notre Dame proudly announced the members of the Class of 2026 who are recipients of our six scholarship awards.

THE FITZPATRICK FAMILY MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

The Fitzpatrick award is based on academic merit and applicants must have achieved a score of 90 or above on the HSPT or 85 or above on the SSAT. They are also required to submit an essay and interview with a Notre Dame Administrator.

Simone Pettit, who graduated from The Pen Ryn School is the recipient of the Fitzpatrick Family Scholarship. Upon receiving the award Simone noted, “Having come from a smaller school, I wasn’t sure what to expect at a bigger school like Notre Dame when I first visited. Throughout the admissions and scholarship process, everyone was so hospitable and welcoming and I knew Notre Dame was the place for me. Thank you to President Jennings and Principal Barlow for selecting me as the Fitzpatrick Family Scholarship recipient and to the Fitzpatrick family for their generosity. I am excited to spend my next four years at Notre Dame!”

MARY ANN LIPTAK MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

The Liptak Scholarship offers half tuition to a student in the incoming freshman class. This is also a merit scholarship and requires high HSPT or SSAT scores, as well as an essay and interview.

The recipient of the Liptak Scholarship is Jenevieve Gopez who attended St. Augustine of Canterbury School.

Jenevieve stated, “Merit scholarships represent success academically through achievement, utilization of talent, and discipline. For me, this merit scholarship represents the valuable influence of a strong, loving, and supportive family which helped me accomplish past goals and has given me the confidence for future endeavors. Notre Dame has given me the opportunity to continue my academic journey by recognizing my merits and providing me with the best chance to succeed. I’m excited for this new start and a chance to represent Notre Dame.”

THE PRESIDENT’S MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

The President’s Merit Scholarship is an award of $5,000 per year for academically qualified incoming students who submit an essay and achieve an 85 or above on their HSPT and 80 or above on the SSAT.

The recipient is Miah Fitzpatrick, who graduated from St. Augustine of Canterbury. Miah exclaimed, "Receiving something so prestigious as a scholarship means a lot to a student. It shows how committed a student is to strive for a goal. My goal was to show my dedication to Notre Dame. I wanted to put all my effort into what I believed in. I believe that hard work pays off. Through the twists and turns of applying for high schools, being awarded a scholarship gives me the confidence to continue my hard work."

The two Principal's Merit Scholarships are awards of $2,500 per year for academically qualified incoming freshman who submit an essay and achieve an 85 or above on their HSPT and 80 above on SSAT.

This year’s recipients are Caitlin Patrick who attended St. Ignatius School and William "Wes" Sullivan from William Penn Middle School.

“I was honored to have received a scholarship from Notre Dame. My eighth-grade year was a challenge for me, both academically and socially. The Principal's Scholarship gave me the confidence that I needed to realize that I can do anything if I believe in myself and put in the time and hard work,” said Caitlin.

Wes agrees, “The Notre Dame merit scholarship shows the commitment the school has towards academics and overall student character. I sincerely appreciate this opportunity and want to thank the school and its donors or making it possible."

THE DANIEL C. TATUM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Established in 2021 by family and friends, the Daniel C. Tatum ‘11 Memorial Scholarship is an annual $1,000 award to an incoming freshman who attended St. Paul School in Princeton, which was also Danny’s alma mater. The recipient, Madison Fajardo, exclaimed, “Winning the Daniel C. Tatum Memorial Scholarship gives me the opportunity to continue my growth in knowledge and the Catholic faith at an excellent school such as Notre Dame. It is also a tremendous financial help to my family and aids me in getting the best education. I am so thankful for the blessings I’ve received and hope that one day I can provide the same assistance to others.”

Notre Dame was featured in the October 2021 edition of Suburban Life, a magazine published locally and in the Philadelphia suburbs. Focusing on our excellent academic programs, the article included interviews with Principal Joanna Barlow and Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction Lisa Matar ’96 Lenihan.

Notre Dame High School provides college-bound students with the tools and opportunities they need to build confidence, pursue their interests, and achieve their academic ambitions.

Nestled in the community of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Notre Dame High School offers college-bound students in grades nine through twelve a meaningful and challenging academic experience rooted in Catholic values. From seminar-style discussions to experiential learning options, Notre Dame’s student-centered curriculum nurtures critical and independent thinking as well as intellectual growth for students with diverse strengths.

Every aspect of the Notre Dame experience prepares students for what’s to come in college and beyond. For example, expansive course offerings in everything from the arts to economics allow students to hone their strengths and pursue their interests, while ensuring a solid academic foundation. “Our program offerings are quite robust. But thanks to small class sizes and involved teachers, our students enjoy big-school advantages with a small-school feel. It’s really the best of both worlds,” explained Lisa Matar ’96 Lenihan, Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction.

Likewise, Notre Dame’s block scheduling not only allows for more focused study, but also mirrors a typical college approach to course schedules. Students say they appreciate the greater flexibility in meeting and exceeding graduation requirements while being able to select electives that match their future academic goals, according to Principal Joanna Barlow.

Notre Dame encourages one-on-one interactions between students and educators. Dedicated office hours for faculty members prepare students for this vital college experience, enabling them to get comfortable with the process of having meaningful conversations with instructors about their education. College-bound students who have an individualized education plan, service plan, or need accommodations for a learning difference also have access to a learning needs coordinator who supports and encourages progress in their coursework.

“At Notre Dame, we ensure that every student gets the opportunity to go as far as their ability and ambition will take them,” says Mrs. Barlow. “We offer a variety of programs designed to help students with diverse strengths build the skills they need to thrive—and encounter the challenges they need to grow.” She cites the AP Capstone Diploma

Program, which is a two-course program that grounds qualified students in research methods and engages them in independent inquiry.

“We enjoy a number of partnerships with colleges and universities throughout the state where Notre Dame students can earn credit and/or dual credit. If a student exhausts the Notre Dame curricular offering in a particular subject we find a way to provide them the challenge they seek,” said Mrs. Barlow.

College partnerships and a dual-enrollment program allow students to pursue advanced studies beyond Notre Dame’s 18 AP courses and 35 Honors courses. Through dual enrollment, a college or university awards the student college credits to jumpstart their college transcript. Arrangements with Seton Hall University and Georgian Court University, among others, provide students with endless possibilities for challenge.

Another example of Notre Dame’s forward-looking approach is the McAuley Studies Program, which focuses on developing intellectual independence and supports students’ efforts in their regular college-preparatory courses. The program helps college-bound students hone academic skills and provides the tools they need to thrive at Notre Dame, in college, and beyond.

Self-Discovery and Exploration

“Notre Dame is a place where students come to find their voice and vision—something that we’re careful to nurture,” remarked Lisa Lenihan, Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction. “We prompt and nurture students to find their leader within every opportunity, and we expose them to different fields and career paths.”

Students come to Notre Dame to prepare for college. In the process, they also find their voice and vision for

the future. Academic concentrations in subjects such as communications and applied sciences enable students to customize, focus, and enhance their academic experience to reflect their interests in a manner similar to a college minor.

College preparation at Notre Dame often happens far beyond the walls of the classroom, through opportunities such as internships and service learning. Senior professional internships thrust students into a real-world work environment, where they can explore key components of a career in a specific field, both on and off campus. Past internships sites have included law firms, physical therapy practices, and architectural firms. Service learning is an essential part of each student’s education at Notre Dame, too; many seniors gain firsthand experience in decisionmaking and team-building by taking on formal leadership roles in the school’s service-learning endeavors.

Academic advisory groups advance the small-school atmosphere of the Notre Dame community while providing students with opportunities for social and emotional growth. Led by a faculty member, each advisory cohort remains together from year to year and includes students from each grade, a model that promotes student leadership and relationships across grade levels.

“Our student outcomes say it all,” says Barlow. “When our students leave Notre Dame, they are exceptionally prepared for admission to the colleges and universities of their choice, including the most selective and respected schools in the nation. We welcome prospective students to discover Notre Dame where they will experience our devotion to learning, preparing them for both academic and future successes.”

Seven ND students earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. These national recognition programs grant underrepresented students with academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications. These students have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have excelled on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10, or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams.

“We’re thrilled that our students have earned this recognition. We are very proud of them for their achievements in the classroom and on College Board assessments,” said Lisa Matar ‘96 Lenihan, Vice Principal for Curriculum and Instruction.

2022 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Michael Carroll ’22 and Phoebe Kong ’22 met the requirements to enter the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. From more than 1.3 million program entrants, both of these students are among the 50,000 highest scoring participants on the PSAT/NMSQT.

Sunsurray Joseph ‘24 participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum's Envision Program for Medicine held in Boston last summer.

The Medical Envision Program allows high school students to explore a variety of specialized medical fields. Students participated in workshops and small group activities where they were able to get hands-on practice with diagnostic tools. They participated in true-to-life medical simulations and unique role-playing exercises with peers and medical experts. Held at prestigious universities across the United States, participants are typically able to experience college life at the campus of their choice. The program featured prominent speakers and doctors who gave lectures on health care careers.

When asked about her experience, Sunsurray said, “I already had the mindset that the medical field might be a difficult pursuit for a career, but once I attended the program it just confirmed my desire to work in medicine.” Sunsurray now has a goal for herself of working in the medical field, specifically in radiology. She was also extended an invitation to attend the next Envision Program, “The National Youth Leadership Forum: Advanced Medicine and Health Care.”

Displayed in every classroom, students turn toward Notre Dame's Mercy Core Values to guide them. The Mercy Core Value of Service "…extends our energy and resources on behalf of the poor, sick and underprivileged working to relieve misery and address its causes where possible."

The Honors Religion Service course, taught by Dr. Ellieen Ingbristen, allows students to extend their giving abilities beyond the walls of the school and into the grounds of the community. Students participate in hands-on service and are encouraged to take charge of their own projects. They are introduced to a new perspective on what it means to truly give back.

“The Honors Religion Service Course allows students who have the common goal of helping the community to work together on different programs,” said Nina Consiglio ‘22, a member of the service class.

During the week of Halloween, the class hosted students from Sprout U School of the Arts, located in Trenton. A festive Trunk-or-Treat was set up in ND’s parking lot for the Sprout students to Trick-or-Treat. They spent time with ND students, worked on crafts, and got lots of candy. “It gives the children an experience they might not have been able to have outside of this environment and makes Halloween really special for them,” said class member Layla Gojaniuk ‘22.

Outside the Honors Religion Service course, all Notre Dame students are required to complete a certain number of service hours per grade, but many strive to go beyond these requirements. The Notre Dame Service Learning Program inspires students to apply their faith in ways that benefit local and global communities. Notre Dame student clubs and groups organize numerous service projects throughout the school year.

For example, The ND Cares Club hosts the annual Pink Out activities every October. Beyond this, they offer a wide variety of service opportunities. In December, they host an Adopt A Family program where children are able to pick out gifts they would like to give to their parents or guardians. Students are also able to participate in Boxes of Sunshine. Snacks and fun items meant to make the recipients smile are assembled and distributed to those in need living in the Bucks and Mercer County areas.

During Thanksgiving, students donate different types of holiday foods to families who do not have the opportunity to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving. Last year, the ND community donated 2,180 food items to Mt. Carmel Guild, an organization that Notre Dame has worked with for many years.

Notre Dame also works hard to reach beyond the local community. The Operation Smile Program is a global organization that helps provide for children with untreated cleft conditions. Notre Dame’s own chapter of Operation Smile recently gathered to create hospital gowns for children undergoing this life-changing surgery. “We are helping kids in third world countries. A high school student in New Jersey can make a difference for people anywhere,” Gojaniuk says.

With an average of over 30,000 service hours completed each year by the student body, service is truly at the core of a Notre Dame education. It may look like just a number, but it represents food on a dinner table, a day of laughter, or a large smile on a child miles away. To the Notre Dame family, 30,000 hours represent a year of following the important Mercy Core Value of Service.

Special LITURGIES

The Notre Dame community gathers once a month to celebrate Mass. Throughout the school year, we also come together for special liturgies such as our Mercy Day Mass and the Mass celebrating Social Justice, Diversity and Inclusion. We open each new school year with our Mercy Day Liturgy to celebrate our Catholic identity as well as our proud heritage as a Mercy School. We honor the Sisters of Mercy who founded Notre Dame in 1957. A Notre Dame education is built upon the Mercy Core Values they brought to us including: Respect, Integrity, Justice, Compassion and Service.

In February, we gather for a Mass to celebrate our diversity, support social justice and promote inclusion. Members of the Notre Dame SHADES and Social Justice Clubs organized and participated in the Mass this year. Joining our chaplain, Fr. Jason Parzynski, in the celebration of Mass, was special guest Dr. Curtis Turner, Head of School at Saint Frances Academy and an ordained deacon for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington. Deacon Turner gave a moving homily. The program also included prayers spoken in various languages and the presentation of special gifts from different cultures. Allie Williams ‘24, Noelle Go ‘25, Lina Yang ‘25, and Abigail Hwang ‘24 performed a beautiful instrumental rendition of Amazing Grace and Wade in the Water during the Communion reflection. The program ended with the presentation of a poignant video produced by the SHADES Club.

We have been blessed to be able to conduct the RCIA process and Confirmation preparation at Notre Dame High School for the past several years. The acronym RCIA stands for the “Rite of Christain Initiation of Adults'' and serves as a welcoming organization for those who desire to enter into a faith-filled community within the Church.

The Notre Dame community was blessed to witness the Confirmation of five students during Easter Liturgy in April. Matthew Savage ‘23, Ryan Carr ‘23, Diego Mendez ‘24, Keihrah Boyer ‘24 and Kayla Cizmar ‘25, were confirmed by ND Chaplain, Fr. Jason Parzynski.

We were excited to have the confirmandi’s families and sponsors join us for the beautiful liturgy.

CelebrateLife ACTIVITIES

Although the members of the Celebrate Life Club were unable to attend the annual March For Life held in Washington DC this year, they chose to advocate for the sanctity of life in different ways.

They placed 970 miniature blue and pink flags at the school entrance to signify the lives lost to abortion in just an 8-hour workday. Banners were erected behind the flags, one of which encouraged us to pray for the healing of those affected by abortion. Club members also welcomed Notre Dame students and faculty to the chapel to pray the Rosary for Life the next day.

Finally, Notre Dame’s Celebrate Life Club and Catholic Athletes for Christ members joined forces and collected over 28,000 diapers for HomeFront. The diaper drive was a competition among all of the Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Trenton and ND collected the most diapers.

Kairos returned to the Malvern Retreat House! Over 150 seniors attended one of the three retreats offered this past year.

CATHOLIC ATHLETES FOR CHRIST PLAQUE PRESENTATION

A special plaque was presented to Notre Dame High School at the Catholic Athletes for Christ (CAC) Leadership Conference in remembrance of all that our beloved Coach John McKenna had done for the organization. Colin Treacy ‘22 and Rasheen Young ‘23 accepted the plaque on behalf of the ND CAC.

The plaque read in part: “For unwavering support and unrelenting guidance that helped in leading our path to success.” Coach McKenna’s legacy lives on in the work he did not only for our athletes, but also the CAC organization which he helped build and was so important to him. We are eternally grateful for his dedication and commitment to Notre Dame High School and Catholic education.

ICAN/SPIRITUALITY DAYS

Every school year, underclassmen experience a day of spirituality and community service with their fellow classmates. Each class has its own ICAN/Spirituality Day in the building dedicated to spirituality and community service. This year, students attended workshops, listened to guest speakers and completed community service projects including: packaging 20,000 meals for Rise Against Hunger, creating sock puppets, hospital gowns and cards for the Operation Smile organization and making over 800 food and hospitality/first aid bags for the Trenton Rescue Mission, HomeFront, and Anchor House.

Notre Dame Student Helps Get Bill Passed into Law

Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill into law that was championed by Notre Dame student Eva Drennan ‘25. Eva began the arduous task of helping to get a bill passed when she was in eighth grade at St. Gregory the Great Academy. The legislation, sponsored by Senator Linda Greenstein and Senator Steven Oroho, requires newborn infants to be screened for Congenital Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection.

Moved by the story of one of her teachers who had contracted the virus while pregnant and gave birth to a son with cerebral palsy, she felt the need to help. “I thought, we can certainly get this done. My family and I later emailed Senator Greenstein and Senator Oroho and they instantly agreed to help us,” Eva said.

The following months were spent contacting local legislators to help draft a bill requiring screenings for Cytomegalovirus. “In late June we dropped the bill and the process took off from there,” Eva told us. In early November, Eva testified in front of the State Senate and, later in the month, in front of the State Assembly.

On January 18, Eva was excited to report that Senate Bill-3975 and Assembly Bill-5963, requiring screenings for newborn infants for congenital cytomegalovirus, became a law. “When I heard that the Governor signed the bill I was extremely excited. I was so happy that he recognized the importance of screenings for CMV,” Eva said.

CANDLE ROSE CEREMONY

In this special Notre Dame tradition, senior student leaders of clubs, athletics, service, performing arts, campus ministry, peer leadership, publications and National Honor Society, pass candles to the juniors taking their positions as a show of leadership change. The seniors passing down the light of leadership then receive a rose of gratitude from the juniors for their hard work and dedication to the student body.

WILSON TWINS EARN RANK OF EAGLE SCOUT

Congratulations to the Wilson brothers, Luke and Aidan, Class of ‘22, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. The rank of Eagle is the highest attainable in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and achieved by only 4% of scouts. A Court of Honor celebration was held for the brothers in May.

The final requirement for the rank of Eagle Scout is the completion of a community service project. For his project, Luke led a team of adult and youth volunteers in the construction of an information kiosk which he designed and built at the CYO of Mercer County Day Camp. Aidan designed and installed two information kiosks at Sayen Gardens in Hamilton, with the help of his team of adult and youth volunteers.

Pink Out ’21

“Friday Night Lights” at Notre Dame came back this past year as did our annual Pink Out game. This is the 13th year Ms. Diane Wargo and the ND Cares Club honored cancer warriors and angels from our community. The Pink Out halftime ceremony included families escorting a warrior or cancer survivor on the field to be honored. Students also volunteered to have their hair cut to be used to make wigs for cancer patients. In the past 13 years of this tradition, over 750 ponytails were collected and donated.

The SHADES Club hosted the 4th Annual Hoops for Hope after a two-year hiatus. Hoops for Hope was started six years ago by the SHADES Club to join school clubs together to work toward a common goal centered around service and community. This year, 34 teams of approximately 300 students from all grade levels participated while countless other students sat in the stands to show their support.

Carolyn Aranha ‘22 designed this year’s Hoops for Hope logo featured on t-shirts which faculty, staff and students purchased to raise money for Catholic Relief Services. Catholic Relief Services provides international assistance to the disadvantaged. This year, the Hoops for Hope event raised over $2,000.

NATHAN WEBBER Athletic Director

NOTRE DAME ANNOUNCED APPOINTMENT OF NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, NATHAN WEBBER

In August, Notre Dame welcomed Nathan Webber as the new Athletic Director. President Ken Jennings stated, "I am very excited that Nate Webber has joined the ND team as Athletic Director. Nate brings a tremendous amount of experience to the position and he is a person who will support the mission of Notre Dame High School. We are thrilled to have him at the helm of our strong Irish athletic program.”

An accomplished administrator, Mr. Webber has over 25 years of experience in the field of education and athletics. He held various administration positions in both public and Catholic schools including Athletic Director, Principal and Vice Principal. Most recently, he was the Director of Athletics at Steinert High School. He also has a number of years experience in the classroom as a teacher. “Mr. Webber is a passionate, dedicated educator with a wealth of experience to share. His unwavering faith and belief in the potential of student-athletes to excel in all areas is contagious,” said Principal Joanna Barlow.

Mr. Webber has coached basketball at various levels for over 16 years. During his coaching career, he was named the Times Coach of the Year and Trentonian Coach of the Year. In addition to basketball, he also coached football and track. In a statement Mr. Webber said, “I look forward to joining the Notre Dame family and am excited to work toward enhancing the experiences of students and athletes at ND.”

FRANK QUARTUCCI NAMED ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE COACH

Frank Quartucci joined the Notre Dame Athletics Program as the Athletic Performance Coach in August 2021. Coach Quartucci graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He played football for Rutgers as a center on the offensive line. Following graduation, Coach Quartucci worked at Rutgers for seven years as the Associate Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic Sports. He was on the Rutgers football coaching staff and also oversaw the design of Rutgers’ athletic facility, The Rodkin Academic Success Center, which included a state-of-the-art weight room for both soccer and lacrosse.

While with Olympic Sports, he trained over 15 athletic teams. During his time coaching Rutgers football, the team won a share of the Big East Championship, went to three bowl games, and won a bowl championship against North Carolina. He trained 30+ athletes who played in the NFL (National Football League), PLL (Premier Lacrosse League), MLL (Major League Lacrosse), and MLS (Major League Soccer). Coach Quartucci is certified through the NSCA as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and certified by USA Weightlifting.

Erich Sands ’22, Jake Shannon ’22, Matthew Benjamin ’23 and Trip Pisano ’23 competed for the Princeton National Rowing Association (PNRA) Mercer team at the 27th US Rowing Youth National Championship Regatta in June.

Bridget Foti ‘25, Gwenyth Lowery ‘22 and Kitty Vernon ‘22, qualified for the 2022 Oireachtas Rince na Crunnie or World Irish Dance Championships in Belfast, Northern Ireland. All three dance at the Kotelnicki School of Irish Dance in Hamilton, NJ and have been working side by side since they were young girls. In April, Bridget and Kitty flew to Ireland and competed against other individuals from around the world.

The Board of Governors is pleased to report that Notre Dame High School is financially strong, and that we are committed to ensuring it remains so. Thanks to the leadership of Ken Jennings, President, Donna Grabowski, VP of Finance, Maggie Kelly, VP of Advancement, Laura Sarubbi, VP of Enrollment and other school administration we are confident we can meet this challenge.

For the academic school year 21–22, Notre Dame had a total enrollment of 876 students and received $12.4 million in tuition and fee revenue net of $1.1 million in tuition assistance and merit scholarships provided to 297 students.

The gap between total revenues and operating expenses is funded through Program Revenue, Advancement Contributions, and Cash Reserves.

As we transitioned back to full time classroom instruction, the global COVID pandemic continued to impact our school finances in 21–22. We invested in air purifiers for all classrooms; we purchased a tent to enable more outside communal gatherings; and we continued our surface and disinfectant cleaning. The cost of COVID-related expenses to our 21–22 school operations was $195,000. We continue to work with the Federal and State agencies for funding offered through FEMA and EANS to potentially offset these expenses.

We ended the 21–22 school year with $7.5 million in unrestricted cash and investments to fund operations and our strategic plan initiatives.

The Board continues to rely on and refine our strategic financial plan. The plan identifies several key financial performance indicators we use to measure and track our financial performance. A key financial performance indicator is maintaining a long-range plan focused on school enrollment and school tuition, annual capital project investment, and projecting budget surplus / deficits for the next five years. The Board and administration rely on these metrics and our benchmarking data to evaluate our financial performance and adjust operating plans if needed. Additionally, as part of the strategic plan, Notre Dame remains focused on teacher and staff salary and benefits. The Board has approved the creation of an Ad Hoc Salary and Benefits Committee to review our current salary scale and benefits in an effort to attract and retain the highest quality teachers. Two significant challenges facing schools across the U.S. are recruiting quality personnel and providing them with competitive compensation. The Board remains committed to fairly compensating our teachers for the incredible work they do each and every day.

The Board and Finance Committee spend a considerable amount of time reviewing Notre Dame’s financial sustainability. We believe our program and plans, grounded in our Mercy Core values, exceeds those offered by our peer schools, and that is in large part due to the charitable donations of our family, friends, and community. In a recent note to Notre Dame, Rosemarie Picone ’83 Flood shared that since 2007 she has been working as a Director of Religious Education at St. John the Evangelist Church in Bergenfield, NJ. She is also a founder and volunteer at the American Special Children’s Pilgrimage Group.

Exactly 50 years to the day (and time), former ND faculty member, Ken Micai and his wife, alumna, Maryann Soltis ’70 Micai celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on August 28, 2021. Marion Zukas ’72 is putting her BFA to good use as a self-employed interior designer. She has completed projects in Hamilton and Cranbury, NJ and is also enjoying sketching and painting.

Joseph Forman ’74 is in his 37th year of teaching Theology in high school. He is currently on faculty at Holy Cross of San Antonio.

This summer, former ND Classmates, Pat Robillard ’68 Gerding, Pauline Lytle ’68, Pat McNamara ’68 Murdock and Kathy Stoka ’68 Meyer reconnected after 54 years. The foursome toured Notre Dame, stirring special memories of their ND experience.

William Saraceni ’77 retired from the Army in 2011 and went to work for the State of New Jersey. He has since retired from that position and is enjoying hobbies and traveling around the country with his wife Nancie to visit friends and their five grandchildren.

Laura Smith ’87 Geltch, Grants, Communication & Sponsorship Coordinator at Hamilton Township School District recently shared that the District was recognized by the New Jersey School Public Relations Association (NJSPRA) with a 2021 School Communications Award in the category of Marketing, Branding, Image for their submission titled, Nottingham High School's Virtual Orientation Choice Board, an online, interactive information portal. They also won for a video submission, Commercial Design and Illustration.

John Bochiaro ’93 was recently promoted to Vice President, Game Presentation of the National Hockey League where he oversees in-venue experiences for all NHL tent pole events including the Winter Classic, NHL All Star Weekend and Stadium Series games. Dr. Jerry Mangine ’98 is an Associate Professor of Exercise Science at Kennesaw State (GA). Jerry is a recent recipient of the National Strength and Conditioning Association's Terry J. Housh Outstanding Young Investigator Award and is a current nominee for the 2022 Educator of the Year Award.

Mr. Jaime Gibilisco ’10 and his AP Government class welcomed Notre Dame alumnus, Rich Widmann ’07, a product attorney at Google, as their guest speaker this past spring. The class reviewed two case studies pertaining to privacy issues and the 4th Amendment. Rich ended his virtual visit by taking questions from students about his background and career choice.

Ashley Mont ’10 Montjohnson recently co-founded an all women owned biomedical device company. NeuroTechR3 provides personalized rehabilitation solutions using Exergame technologies for improving hand and arm functions in individuals suffering from the effects of brain injury and musculoskeletal impairments.

Alex Covello ’17 is working for her dream company, BuzzFeed as a Video Fellow. Alex is a 2021 graduate of Elon University where she interned for Mandalay Sports Media and Netflix.

Michael Blotto ’19, a junior at the University of Alabama (UA) was recently selected for the 109th class of the Jasons Senior Men's honorary, UA's oldest and most prestigious honor society. The Jasons was founded to highlight the top 40 rising male seniors who display excellence in academics, campus involvement and community service. Michael was selected out of a pool of 100 applicants who were nominated by on campus organizations. His involvement on campus includes being president the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, serving as the Director of Student Involvement on the IT & Webmaster Cabinet for the student government association, director of chapter and leadership services for UA’s Greek programming board, UA Interfraternity Council executive committee as well as being a member of UA’s Management Consulting Academy, and the Alabama Information Management Society. Michael is a Management Information Systems major and will graduate with both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in MIS in spring 2023.

Jason Merendino ’19, a junior at the University of Hartford, was recently honored with the Junior Regents Award. This honor recognizes two students of each of the seven colleges at the University of Hartford with the highest GPA. Jason is one of the top two in the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture and will graduate in 2023 with a degree in Architectural Design and Technology with a concentration in Construction Management. Jason was also invited to join The University of Hartford Gamma Nu Chapter of Tau Sigma Delta which is made up of students who have distinguished themselves in their architectural education, and academically reflects the top 20% of the student body.

Katie Black ’20 was recently accepted into the Disney College program through Elizabethtown College and worked and studied in the most magical place on earth this past spring.

Former ND baseball teammates and current Mercer County Community College sluggers Jacob Kmiec ’19, Brayden Meskill ’20 and Ryan Conover ’20 recently celebrated their team's wins in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) – Region 19 Championship and the East District Championship.

Vicky Ramirez ’21, a sophomore at Duke University studying Psychology on a Pre-Med track, was accepted as one of 18 out of a pool of over 100 applicants to be an Alice M. Baldwin Scholar. The program inspires and supports female undergraduate students to become engaged, confident and connected leaders in the Duke community and beyond.

Duke University sophomore, Seamus Harding ’20, finished second in men’s platform diving to earn All-ACC honors during the ACC Swimming and Diving Championship. Seamus recorded a score of 376.30, the third highest score in program history, and placed second in the event. He earned his first career All-ACC honor and Duke's fourth honor of the 2022 ACC Championship, marking the most in a single championship since the Blue Devils recorded six in 2014.

Lauren Lencovich ’21 was recognized by the Mt. Carmel Guild as a student volunteer for service work she completed while a student at Notre Dame. During the early months of the COVID pandemic, Lauren organized a “drop-off food drive” to benefit the charity, and was instrumental in ND’s Toys for Tots campaign as well as other donation drives.

34TH ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC

On September 27, 2021, 120 golfers set out to play 18 holes of golf at Forsgate Country Club, in Monroe Township, NJ. It was the perfect fall day and $25,000 was raised in support of need-based tuition assistance.

HOMECOMING

On October 15, 240 ND alumni and family members came out to reconnect and cheer on the Irish as we beat Hamilton West at Homecoming. During the reception, we honored former Athletic Director and baseball coach Vince Ardery for his years of service and commitment to ND. The event also hosted the 40th reunion for the class of 1981.

MEMORIAL MASS

On November 7, we welcomed 104 guests for our annual Mass in memory of Notre Dame’s deceased alumni, students, faculty and staff. Fr. Jason Parzynski presided over the Liturgy in the theatre. Attendees viewed a slideshow of yearbook photos of the departed and met in the Student Center for refreshments following Mass.

2ND ANNUAL TURKEY TROT AND TRACK REUNION

On Saturday, November 20 we hosted a reunion of track and field/cross country alumni. After a ribbon-cutting to re-dedicate the newly resurfaced Joe Wroblewski Memorial Track. We had a barbecue for attendees in the picnic area of Nolan field. This event kicked off our annual Turkey Trot, a virtual run/walk with proceeds benefiting the Mt. Carmel Guild and Senior Care Services of Great Princeton. We opened our track and cross-country trail to participants that morning, as well. We had 45 individuals participate in the Turkey Trot from November 20 to November 28.

HANDBAG BINGO

Handbag BINGO is always a sell-out. 325 ladies and a few gentlemen gathered in the student center on Friday, February 18 for a night of fun and games. Fr. Jason Parzynski and Coach Marty Schafer were our emcees for the evening. They made the night extra fun.

DAY OF GIVING — MARCH 17

Our Day of Giving campaign was a huge success – 222 donors raised $55,310. Current Parents represented 42.5% of the gifts, Alumni were 40.5%, and Faculty and Staff represented 4.9% of gifts. Friends, Grandparents, Parents of Alumni, Students, and Incoming Parents also participated in this effort. The Advancement Office hosted a sweet treats party all day for anyone who wanted to come into the office and see us in action.

ANNUAL AUCTION — SPRING FLING

Our annual auction which is now named Spring Fling was held on March 26 at Trenton Country Club. It was a great night to raise money for the arts. The auction raised $90,000, which is a school record. Portions of the proceeds went toward the renovation of our two art studios.

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME

The Athletic Hall of Fame was held on April 30 at Mercer Oaks Golf Course. 200 people came to honor our newly inducted members:

CASH BINGO

It's all fun and games until someone yells BINGO. 150 people were cheered on by emcee Fr. Jason Parzynski on May 20 and all had a great time. Proceeds from the event went toward the purchase of an Our Lady of Guadalupe statue for the new turf field.

2ND ANNUAL ALUMNI GOLF TOURNAMENT — THE IRISH CUP

The Irish Cup was held on Monday, May 23 at Mercer Oaks Golf Course. Congratulations to the winning foursome of Jay Janis ’87, Gary Houghton, Nick Houghton and Keith Guenzeli.
