Einleitung Die vorliegende Neuausgabe der Werke für Tasteninstrumente von Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck beruht auf einem von den Konventionen des 20. Jahrhunderts abweichenden Editionskonzept. Ausgangspunkt war das Bedürfnis, den vollen Informationsgehalt der Quellen für die heutigen Benutzer zu erschließen und die Vielfalt abweichender Lesarten nach der Zuverlässigkeit der Quellen zu ordnen, um einen authentischen und übersichtlichen Notentext zu erhalten. In jedem Band erscheinen zuerst die in Liniennotation (der Notationsform Sweelincks) und dann die in Buchstabentabulatur (der Notationsform der deutschen Sweelinck-Schule) überlieferten Werke. In einem dritten Abschnitt sind die anonym überlieferten oder fraglichen Kompositionen zusammengefasst. Das Hochformat akzentuiert die Bestimmung des Repertoires für alle Tasteninstrumente.

Es war nahe liegend, Untersuchungen zu Papier und Wasserzeichen der wichtigsten Handschriften einzubeziehen und ihre Überlieferungswege zu verfolgen. Auf dieser Grundlage ist es möglich, den engen Zusammenhang der Hauptquellen aufzuzeigen, nachdem die Diskussion in den letzten Jahrzehnten von einer eher pessimistischen Einschätzung der Zuverlässigkeit der Sweelinck-Überlieferung ausging.

Die Grundlagen dieser Edition sind: – die Bereitstellung eines Notentextes, der auf dem spezifischen Notenbild der Quellen beruht (Notenwerte, Taktlängen, Taktvorzeichnungen, Handverteilung, Balkungen, ursprüngliche Titel), – eine Neubewertung der Quellen in Bezug auf ihre Provenienz und ihre Notationsform, – die Definition des Werkbestandes aufgrund der Forschungsergebnisse der letzten Jahrzehnte und dem in Vorbereitung befindlichen neuen Sweelinck-Werkverzeichnis (SwWV)1 sowie – die Berücksichtigung der in den letzten Jahren erfolgten Untersuchungen zu Leben und Werk Sweelincks.2 Das Repertoire ist auf vier Bände aufgeteilt, um handliche Umfänge der Einzelbände für die Praxis zu erhalten: Band 1 – Toccaten Band 2 – Fantasien Band 3 – Choral- und Psalmvariationen Band 4 – Lied- und Tanzvariationen Im Anhang des ersten Bandes werden in einem Beitrag zur Spielweise Sweelincks die originalen Angaben zur Applikatur und Ornamentik vorgestellt. Der zweite Band enthält eine Studie zur Instrumentenfrage, der dritte Band einen Beitrag zur Registrierpraxis.

Zur Biographie3 Im Jahre 1564 übersiedelte der Organist Pieter Swibbertszoon mit seiner Familie von Deventer nach Amsterdam, wo er an der Oude Kerk eine der wichtigsten Organistenstellen Hollands antrat. Viel Zeit, um sein Talent auf den beiden schon damals renommierten Niehoff-Orgeln von 1542 und 1545 zu entfalten, war ihm nicht vergönnt. Er starb 1573 und hinterließ seine Frau Elsken Jansdochter Sweling und vier Kinder, darunter den siebenjährigen Gerrit (1566 – nach 1610), der ein bekannter Maler werden sollte, sowie den elfjährigen Jan (1562–1621). Beide Brüder nahmen später den charakteristischen Familiennamen ihrer Mutter an, wenn auch in unterschiedlichen Schreibweisen. Die verwaiste Familie erhielt offensichtlich ausreichende Unterstützung von Stadt und Kirche, und auch die musikalische Begabung des ältesten Sohnes wurde schon früh erkannt und in Hinblick auf die eventuelle Nachfolge seines Vaters gefördert. Eine wichtige Rolle scheint dabei der Pastor

der Oude Kerk, Jacob Buyck (Bruder des mächtigen Amsterdamer Bürgermeisters Joost Buyck) gespielt zu haben. Nach einer zuverlässigen Überlieferung war dieser gebildete Mann eine Art Mentor des jungen Jan Pieterszoon. Im Hinblick auf seine musikalische Ausbildung ist lediglich dokumentiert, dass er von dem Sänger und Schalmei-Spieler Jan Willemszoon Lossy aus dem nahen Haarlem unterrichtet wurde. Orgelunterricht erhielt Jan Pieterszoon möglicherweise von dem angesehenen Organisten der St. Bavo Kerk in Haarlem, Floris van Adrichem.

Bereits 1577 war der erst fünfzehnjährige Jan Pieterszoon offenbar weit genug fortgeschritten, um die Organistenstelle an der Oude Kerk zu übernehmen, die er bis zu seinem Tod innehatte. Jedoch schon ein Jahr nach Übernahme des Amtes sollte sich das Profil dieser Stelle grundlegend ändern: Im Jahre 1578 wurde auch Amsterdam, eine der letzten katholischen Bastionen der nördlichen Niederlande, calvinistisch. Die katholische Obrigkeit wurde aus der Stadt vertrieben und auch der überzeugte Katholik Jacob Buyck musste fliehen. Die Folgen dieses Konfessionswechsels waren jedoch nicht so weitreichend, wie meist angenommen wird. Es wurde nicht sofort eine streng calvinistische Ordnung eingeführt, sondern es entstand eine in gewisser Weise „offene“ Kirche, die einige Jahrzehnte Bestand hatte.4 Zwar wurde der Gottesdienst dem Genfer Vorbild angepasst, zugleich blieben aber viele Elemente des alten Ritus erhalten. Dadurch wurde es der Bevölkerung erleichtert, den Übergang zum Calvinismus sukzessive zu vollziehen. Voraussetzung für diese außergewöhnliche Entwicklung war eine sehr gemäßigte erste Generation der calvinistischen Kirchenväter. Erst nach der Jahrhundertwende verstärkte sich die orthodoxe Richtung des Calvinismus, was zu einem Streit zwischen den so genannten Remonstranten und Kontra-Remonstranten (den orthodoxen Calvinisten) und letztendlich auf der Synode von Dordrecht 1619, also kurz vor Sweelincks Tod, zu einem Sieg der streng calvinistischen Richtung führte.

Für den Calvinismus gehörten Orgeln und Orgelspiel zu den wichtigsten Relikten des katholischen Ritus. Orgelspiel während des Gottesdienstes wurde verboten und die Orgeln sollten aus der Kirche entfernt werden. Die Stadtbehörden von Amsterdam (wie auch anderer Städte Hollands) nahmen jedoch als Eigentümer von Kirche und Orgeln die oft erst kürzlich erworbenen, kostspieligen Instrumente in Schutz und behielten ihre Spieler weiterhin als städtische Organisten. Dies war auch das Schicksal des jungen Jan Pieterszoon, der dadurch ab 1578 nicht mehr als liturgischer Organist tätig war. Die neue Kirche sah für den Organisten nur noch eingeschränkt liturgische Aufgaben vor, die sich im Spiel vor und nach dem Gottesdienst erschöpften und hauptsächlich die neuen Psalmweisen dem Volk vertraut machen sollten. Darüber hinaus wurde Sweelinck mit der Durchführung regelmäßiger öffentlicher Konzerte betraut. Diese wurden hauptsächlich auf den beiden Orgeln der Oude Kerk gespielt, konnten jedoch auch Auftritte auf dem Cembalo bei offiziellen städtischen Gelegenheiten einbeziehen. In diesem Zusammenhang reiste Sweelinck 1604 nach Antwerpen und erwarb ein Instrument aus der berühmten Werkstatt Ruckers. (Der Deckel dieses Cembalos, bemalt mit einer allegorischen Darstellung der Stadt Amsterdam, ist vor kurzem wieder aufgetaucht.5) Weitere Reisen Sweelincks beschränkten sich wohl hauptsächlich auf Orgelinspektionen innerhalb der Grenzen der damals jungen niederländischen Republik: Haarlem (1594), Deventer (1595 und 1616), Middelburg (1603), Nijmegen (1605), Harderwijk (1608), Rotterdam (1610), Delft (1610), Dordrecht (1614), Rhenen (1616) und Enkhuizen (1621, kurz vor seinem Tod am 16. Oktober).

Sweelinck, der in der reichen katholischen Orgeltradition aufgewachsen war und der orthodoxen Richtung des Calvinismus offenbar nichts abgewinnen konnte, blieb zusammen mit seiner Familie allem

5 Anschein nach dem katholischen Glauben treu, bewegte sich aber in der Gesellschaft als aufgeschlossener und liberaler Bürger. Er gehörte einer ziemlich breiten und für diese Epoche typischen Schicht aufgeklärter Amsterdamer Kaufleute, Angestellter der Stadtbehörden und Künstler an. Dem neuen calvinistischen Psalter stand er aufgeschlossen gegenüber, wenn auch bezeichnenderweise nicht in der (ziemlich dürftigen) Übersetzung des orthodoxen holländischen Calvinisten Petrus Datheen. Sweelincks Vertonung der originalen französischen Vorlage aller 150 Psalmen in vier- bis achtstimmiger Vokalpolyphonie bildet sein vokales Hauptwerk. Daneben veröffentlichte er eine wichtige Sammlung lateinischer Motetten, etliche davon auf Texte katholischer Herkunft. Diese Sammlung, die Cantiones sacrae, erschien 1619 im katholischen Antwerpen und stellt vielleicht Sweelincks Antwort auf die für fortschrittlich Gesinnte so unglücklich verlaufene Synode von Dordrecht dar. Das Bild wird vervollständigt durch einige Sammlungen weltlicher Vokalwerke auf der Grundlage französischer und italienischer Dichtungen.

Die Stadt Amsterdam erkannte schon früh Sweelincks Bedeutung.

Sein seit 1580 belegtes Gehalt von 100 Gulden im Jahr wurde 1586 auf 200 Gulden erhöht. Nach seiner Trauung 1590 mit Claesgen Dircxdochter Puyner aus Medemblik (einer kleinen Stadt etwa 50 km nördlich von Amsterdam) wurde dieses Gehalt auf 300 Gulden samt freier Wohnung erhöht. Die letzte Gehaltserhöhung erfolgte 1607 und belief sich auf 360 Gulden. Dazu kamen bedeutende Summen aus seiner Unterrichtstätigkeit, die vor allem ab 1600 eine wichtige Rolle spielte. Schüler aus dem benachbarten Deutschland lassen sich ab 1606 nachweisen. Nach vielen Schwierigkeiten wurde 1605 eine lutherische Kirche in der Stadt zugelassen, die wohl die Voraussetzung war für den Zuzug vieler bedeutender junger Organisten aus lutherischen Städten Nord- und Mitteldeutschlands wie Hamburg (Jacob und Johan Praetorius, Heinrich Scheidemann und Ulrich Cernitz), Danzig (Paul Siefert und Matthias Leder), Königsberg (Jonas Zornicht), Hannover (Melchior Schildt), Berlin (August Brücken), Halle (Samuel und Gottfried Scheidt) und Leipzig (Andreas und Martin Düben). Nicht zuletzt durch Sweelincks Unterricht wurde vor allem Hamburg zu einer Hochburg nordeuropäischer Orgelkunst bis weit in das 18. Jahrhundert, die in Johann Sebastian Bach als dem letzten Repräsentanten gipfelte. In diese späte Phase ab 1606 mit einer intensiven Unterrichtstätigkeit fällt auch die Entstehung der wichtigsten Kompositionen von Sweelinck.

Ein Dokument aus dem Jahre 1615 in Zusammenhang mit dem Aufenthalt des jungen Andreas Düben in Amsterdam wirft ein faszinierendes Licht auf Sweelincks Unterrichtspraxis. Die Studienzeit des Leipzigers wurde verlängert, „… dormit er seine Kunst desto besser lerne und das Componiren und Fugiren aus dem Fundament perfect lernet …“6 Der Orgelunterricht war demnach nicht nur auf die traditionelle, auf einem Repertoire (dem „Fundament“) von Imitations-, Sequenz- und Kadenzformeln basierende Improvisationskunst gerichtet, sondern war auch der Komposition von Werken für Tasteninstrumente gewidmet. In diesem Zusammenhang ist auch Sweelincks Bearbeitung von bedeutenden Teilen aus Gioseffo Zarlinos Kontrapunktlehre (Istitutioni harmoniche, 1558–89) zu sehen, die in der deutschen Sweelinck-Tradition bis zum Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts bedeutsam war.7 Die außergewöhnliche Stellung der Amsterdamer Organistenausbildung, die in der Regel zwei bis drei Jahre dauerte, geht nicht zuletzt auch aus der Tatsache hervor, dass nicht nur junge Studenten, sondern auch arrivierte OrganistenPersönlichkeiten wie Jacob Praetorius und Samuel Scheidt nach Amsterdam kamen. Man könnte also von einer Art Meisterkurs sprechen. Bestätigt wird dies auch durch die beträchtlichen Summen, die Sweelinck für seinen Unterricht fordern konnte. Aus der vom Brandenburger Kurfürsten unterstützten Lehrzeit August Brückens ist im Jahre 1613 ein Honorar von 200 Gulden für einen Einzelschüler bekannt:8 Dies ist mehr als die Hälfte des Jahresgehalts von 360 Gulden, das Sweelinck von der Stadt bekam. Die hohe Summe schloss vermutlich auch den Zugang zu dem reichen Schatz von

Sweelincks Clavierkompositionen und die zunftmäßige Erlaubnis zum Kopieren mit ein.

Die Claviermusik Die Claviermusik Sweelincks nimmt einen herausragenden Platz in der Musik des frühen 17. Jahrhunderts ein. Sie erscheint wie ein Spiegel der europäischen Musik dieser Zeit, einzigartig in ihrer Vielseitigkeit und im Erfindungsreichtum der Formmodelle, Themen und Figurationen. Eine wichtige Voraussetzung dafür war gewiss die Tatsache, dass der vom traditionellen liturgischen Rahmen gelöste Dienst Sweelinck eine für die damalige Zeit ungewöhnliche künstlerische Freiheit bot.

Zunächst benutzte Sweelinck diesen Freiraum ausschließlich für die Komposition zahlreicher Vokalwerke. Er beherrschte die Kunst der Vokalpolyphonie auf virtuose Weise, wobei seine Psalmmotetten, lateinischen Motetten, Madrigale und Chansons noch ganz in die „niederländische“, humanistisch gefärbte Tradition der Polyphonie des 16. Jahrhunderts gehören. Dies war der Stil, den jeder talentierte Komponist am Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts anstrebte. Sweelinck erwies sich auf diesem Gebiet als erfolgreicher, meisterhafter Musiker.

Weniger nahe liegend war die Hinwendung zur Claviermusik, denn als Spieler war Sweelinck in allererster Linie – und für Jahrzehnte hindurch wohl ausschließlich – ein brillanter Improvisator.

Erst um die Jahrhundertwende kam Sweelinck zunehmend mit anderen Traditionen in Berührung, die sich neben der Improvisation auch dem auskomponierten Werk widmeten. Hier sind vor allem die Schulen von London (William Byrd und seine Schule), Brüssel (der Byrd-Schüler Peter Philips), Venedig (Claudio Merulo, Giovanni und Andrea Gabrieli) und Hamburg (Hieronymus Praetorius) von besonderer Bedeutung. Konfrontiert mit der vielfältigen und überaus kunstvoll notierten Claviermusik dieser Traditionen, erkannte Sweelinck, dass die kontrapunktische Verfeinerung seiner Technik in der Vokalpolyphonie auch auf die Claviermusik übertragbar war.

Aufgrund dieser pan-europäischen Einflüsse und auf dem sicheren Boden seiner langjährigen Erfahrung als Vokalkomponist und Improvisator an Tasteninstrumenten schuf Sweelinck eine neuartige Form von Instrumentalpolyphonie, die ganz auf die spieltechnischen Möglichkeiten von zwei Händen auf einer Tastatur zugeschnitten war, ohne auf eine strenge Stimmführung zu verzichten. Hierbei ist die Intavolierungspraxis des 16. Jahrhunderts – die Übertragung von Vokalpolyphonie auf Tasteninstrumente – nachdrücklich ausgeklammert. Die Anwendung dieser genuinen Clavierpolyphonie ist nicht nur auf eine einzelne Gattung beschränkt, wie etwa die Fantasie, sondern wird zur Grundlage aller Gattungen – einschließlich der weltlichen Variationen und der Toccaten. Völlig neuartig war auch die durchgängige Anwendung von Wiederholungsstrukturen, der ,repetitio variata‘, in der Figuration. Diese besonders charakteristischen Merkmale von Sweelincks Kunst haben zur Folge, dass die Formen nicht streng voneinander getrennt werden können. So tauchen typische Toccaten-Merkmale in Liedvariationen und Fantasien auf oder es werden Fantasiethemen variationsartig verarbeitet.

Zwei bestechende Merkmale von Sweelincks Vokalmusik, nämlich die Meisterschaft in allen Arten von Polyphonie (vom Bicinium bis zum vollstimmigen Kontrapunkt) sowie die überkonfessionelle Wahl der Text- und Melodievorlagen, zeichnen auch seine Musik für Tasteninstrumente aus. Hier variiert Sweelinck häufig von der Zweibis zur Vierstimmigkeit; letztere wird nur ausnahmsweise überschritten. Unter der Voraussetzung der auf die beiden Spielhände verteilten Polyphonie und Figuration wird eine optimale Selbstständigkeit der Stimmen erreicht. Sweelinck war offen für alle musikalischen Traditionen und durch seine Herkunft und die Besonderheit seiner Anstellung an keine bestimmte Konfession gebunden. Folglich schrieb er nicht nur Variationen auf die Weisen des Genfer Psalters, sondern auch auf altkirchliche Hymnen und lutherische Choräle

6 (ohne Zweifel durch seine deutschen Schüler vermittelt), aber auch auf die damals populären weltlichen Lieder und Tänze englischer, französischer, deutscher und einheimischer Herkunft.

Von großer Bedeutung für das Verständnis dieser Musik ist nicht zuletzt auch die Tatsache, dass Sweelincks Clavier-Œuvre etwa in den fünfzehn letzten Lebensjahren entstand. Erst nach seinem vierzigsten Lebensjahr wandte er sich der Komposition von Clavierwerken zu – ein wohl einmaliger Fall in der Geschichte der Claviermusik! Dass alle (erhaltenen) Clavierwerke im reifen Lebensalter geschrieben wurden, erklärt sowohl die große stilistische Einheit als auch die durchgehend hohe Qualität seines Œuvres. Davon sind immerhin über 60 Werke überliefert, was auf eine große Produktivität hindeutet und zugleich die Wertschätzung widerspiegelt, die von der Um- und Nachwelt dieser virtuosen und inhaltsreichen Clavierkunst entgegenbracht wurde.9 Sweelincks Kompositionen für Tasteninstrumente waren im 17. Jahrhundert unter Berufskollegen und Schülern sowie Sammlern von Claviermusik in Europa weit verbreitet, wie die Abschriften seiner Werke in Nord- und Süddeutschland, England, Belgien, Italien, Ungarn und Russland belegen. Wesentlich umfangreicher ist das Vokalwerk Sweelincks, das in sieben Drucken zwischen 1594 und 1621 in Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden und Antwerpen erschien.

Sweelincks Ruf als Vokalkomponist war zu seinen Lebzeiten schon gefestigt, während seine Clavierwerke zunächst vor allem bei Kennern und Liebhabern bekannt waren.

Heute ist es umgekehrt: Sweelincks Clavierwerke gehören zum festen Bestand unseres Repertoires, seine vokalen Kompositionen hingegen werden nur selten aufgeführt. Die große Aufmerksamkeit, die vor allem in den letzten 40 Jahren dem Clavierkomponisten Sweelinck entgegengebracht wurde, hängt damit zusammen, dass seine Werke zunehmend auf adäquaten historischen oder neuen Instrumenten gespielt werden können. Die originalen RuckersInstrumente und deren Nachbauten sowie die historischen Orgeln etwa in Alkmaar, Leiden, Oosthuizen, Uttum oder auch neue und rekonstruierte Orgeln in aller Welt (wie z. B. in der Deutschen Kirche in Stockholm) schaffen wichtige Voraussetzungen für die musikalische Darstellung dieser Musik. Die Clavierwerke von Sweelinck können wieder in ihrer spezifischen musikalischen Eigenart wahrgenommen werden und sind zu einem Bestandteil der musikalischen Weltkultur geworden, nicht zuletzt durch die Verbreitung auf Tonträgern.

Sehr ähnlich sind die Werke Sweelincks in der Quelle FM, dem Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, notiert. Diese beiden Handschriften überliefern den wichtigsten Bestand der Claviermusik Sweelincks. In der vorliegenden Edition wird – im Gegensatz zu fast allen bisherigen Ausgaben – die Eigenart dieser Notation berücksichtigt.

Weitere wichtige Quellen in Liniennotation sind das Liber Fratrum Cruciferorum Leodinensium (LFCL, wie LyA1 und FM noch zu Lebzeiten des Komponisten geschrieben) sowie die vermutlich in Brüssel in den 1620er Jahre entstandene Handschrift BB1 (heute in Krakau) und nicht zuletzt auch der umfangreiche, aus den 1620er bis 1630er Jahren stammende Kodex des Wiener Minoritenkonvents (WM).

Die Buchstabentabulatur (mit Buchstabenreihen in partiturmäßiger Anordnung) war die von den deutschen Organisten bevorzugte Notationsform. Deren weitverzweigte Überlieferung spiegelt die große Verbreitung von Sweelincks Musik wider. Trotz der abweichenden Notation und des in vielen Fällen beträchtlichen zeitlichen Abstands von Sweelincks Originalmanuskripten ist dieser Zweig der Überlieferung überraschend zuverlässig. Erst bei den spätesten Tabulaturen aus den 1660er bis 1670er Jahren wie die von Budapest (BP) oder die aus der Berliner Amalienbibliothek (AmB) werden Authentizitäts- und Textfragen wirklich aktuell. Die vor 1650 datierbaren sonstigen Tabulaturen vermitteln dagegen ein qualitativ wie auch quantitativ ergiebiges Sweelinck-Bild. Hier müssen vor allem die Lübbenauer „B“ Tabulaturen (LyB), die Berliner Handschrift Graues Kloster (GK) und die aus Süddeutschland stammenden Turiner Tabulaturen (Tor) genannt werden. Die letztgenannte Quelle überliefert den größten Bestand an Claviermusik des 17. Jahrhunderts.

Der Unterschied zwischen Liniennotation und Buchstabentabulatur lässt sich in Beziehung zur modernen Notation am leichtesten an der unterschiedlichen Form der Taktstriche darstellen. Die Buchstabentabulatur kennt keine Taktstriche, sondern nur deutliche Abstände zwischen den Buchstaben nach jeder ganzen Note (Semibrevis). Die Liniennotation kennt dagegen Taktstriche wie in der modernen Notierungsweise. In der Notation Sweelincks, wie sie in LyA1 zu finden ist, stehen diese vertikalen Striche im Abstand einer Brevis ( Ä ).

In der vorliegenden Edition haben die in Liniennotation überlieferten Werke die üblichen Taktstriche (überwiegend als große Breventakte) während das in Buchstabentabulatur überlieferte Repertoire Mensurstriche zwischen den Systemen im Abstand von ganzen Noten (Semibreven) zeigt. Die Notation der Quelle ist also auch an der modernen Notationsform ablesbar.

An dieser Stelle muss auf eine dritte Notationsform hingewiesen werden, die zur Zeit Sweelincks üblich war und bei einigen Quellen zu beobachten ist. Es handelt sich um eine Form der Liniennotation mit zwei fünflinigen Systemen, die sehr dicht beieinander liegen.

Bei einigen Quellen liegen sie so dicht zusammen, dass es sich um ein Zehnlinien-System handelt, so z. B. bei der umfangreichen Handschrift aus dem Wiener Minoritenkonvent WM. Diese Notationsform diente auch als Kompositions-Notation (,tabula compositoria‘).11 In den Quellenbeschreibungen (speziell zu den Toccaten) werden die verschiedenen Notationsformen im Zusammenhang mit der Notation Sweelincks weiter diskutiert. Dies ist möglich auf der Grundlage einer Neubewertung der in Europa weit verstreuten Quellen und der Zusammenhänge ihrer Überlieferung. Das wichtigste Ergebnis dieser Forschung ist die Erkenntnis einer hohen Authentizität der Handschrift LyA1, die nicht nur einen fast fehlerlosen Notentext der Sweelinck-Werke in engster Anlehnung an die autographe Schriftform, sondern auch einen wesentlichen Teil des im Hause Sweelinck vorhandenen internationalen Clavierrepertoires (zusammen mit der Schwesterhandschrift LyA2) enthält. Quellenlage und Notation

Die Überlieferungslage von Sweelincks Claviermusik sieht nur auf den ersten Blick ungünstig aus. Es handelt sich um eine ausschließlich handschriftliche Überlieferung, wobei jedoch keine Autographe erhalten sind. Wie sich bei den Forschungen zur Vorbereitung dieser Edition herausgestellt hat, wurde die wichtigste Sweelinck-Quelle, Lynar A 1 (LyA1), höchstwahrscheinlich von dem Sweelinck-Schüler Andreas Düben, dem später führend in Stockholm tätigen Sohn des Leipziger Thomas-Organisten, hauptsächlich in Amsterdam geschrieben. Damit ist das Rätsel um die Herkunft der wohl wichtigsten Handschrift mit Claviermusik aus dem zweiten Jahrzehnt des 17. Jahrhunderts und deren Bezug zu Sweelinck gelöst. Darüber hinaus hatte Sweelincks ausgedehnte Lehrtätigkeit sowie sein überragender Ruf als Komponist von Claviermusik eine erstaunliche Produktion postumer Abschriften zur Folge, die die Überlieferung vieler seiner Meisterwerke sicherten. Dadurch ist uns eine umfangreiche, fest umrissene Gruppe von Werken in größter stilistischer und qualitativer Homogenität überliefert, während die Problemfälle sowohl quantitativ als auch qualitativ überraschend wenig ins Gewicht fallen.10 Die Notation der Quellen von Sweelincks Claviermusik zeigt zwei Formen – die Liniennotation und die Buchstabentabulatur.

Die Liniennotation englischer und niederländischer Prägung (mit zwei Systemen à 6 Linien) war die von Sweelinck benutzte Nota-

Ein zukünftiges Forschungsfeld ist die bisher nicht näher untersuchte Beziehung Sweelincks zu Christian Erbach (um 1570–1635), der in Augsburg ein lukratives Unterrichtssystem aufbaute, das den Amsterdamer Verhältnissen bei Sweelinck sehr ähnlich war. Die gemeinsame Überlieferung der Werke von Sweelinck und Erbach in einigen der wichtigsten Quellen und die stilistischen Übereinstimmungen deuten auf einen bisher nicht belegten Kontakt. Hierher gehört auch eine weiterführende Untersuchung der Umstände der möglichen Entstehung der Turiner Tabulaturen in Augsburg. Schließlich ist der persönliche Kontakt zu Peter Philips und John Bull ein Indiz für den regen Austausch, den Sweelinck mit der katholisch geprägten Organistenszene der südlichen Niederlande und Englands unterhielt.

Editionsgeschichte

– die Bevorzugung einer strukturellen und logischen Verteilung der Stimmen auf die Systeme (im Gegensatz zur Handverteilung der niederländisch-englischen Liniennotation, die den Spielvorgang abbildet), – die Vereinheitlichung aller Taktlängen auf die Semibrevis-Einheit (ganze Note) und – die Vereinheitlichung der Taktvorzeichnungen (c anstatt von c).

Seiffert hatte sich offenbar 1891 zu diesem Konzept entschlossen, da ihm damals die wichtigste Handschrift in Liniennotation, LyA1, nicht im Original vorlag. Die Nähe der Notation von LyA1 zur Schreibweise Sweelincks wurde auch im folgenden Jahrhundert nicht richtig erkannt. Die neueren Forschungen gipfelten in der 1996 abgeschlossenen Dissertation von Pieter Dirksen und den 2002 publizierten Sweelinck Studies (siehe Anm. 2) Der Notentext der vorliegenden Edition beruht nicht auf einer Kollationierung verschiedener Handschriften, sondern grundsätzlich auf der Berücksichtigung einer einzigen Quelle (Hauptquelle) für jedes Einzelwerk, die nur in geringem Maß durch Lesarten einer Nebenquelle ergänzt wird. Der Umfang der Kritischen Bemerkungen ist dadurch relativ gering. So bleibt der dokumentarische Wert der Kritischen Berichte von Gustav Leonhardt, Alfons Annegarn und Frits Noske in den drei Bänden der Sweelinck-Gesamtausgabe von 1968 mit der umfangreichen Auflistung unterschiedlicher Lesarten bestehen.17

Die erste Publikation mit Claviermusik Jan Pieterszoon Sweelincks erschien 1871.12 Bereits 1894 legte Max Seiffert die erste SweelinckAusgabe vor, die den Anspruch der Vollständigkeit verfolgte.13 Seiffert stützte sich auf die Ergebnisse seiner Berliner Dissertation über Sweelinck und dessen deutsche Schüler,14 die einige Jahre zuvor erschienen war und großes Interesse in der Fachwelt auslöste.

Bei dieser Edition bestand eine große Schwierigkeit darin, dass die Hauptquelle LyA1, die im südlich von Berlin gelegenen Lübbenau bereits um 1840 aufgetaucht und teilweise kopiert worden war, nicht auffindbar war. Seiffert stützte sich neben einigen Kopien aus LyA1 vor allem auf die Berliner Tabulatur GK, das Fitzwilliam Virginal Book und einige weitere Quellen, die er auf einer Studienreise in die Niederlande und nach England kennengelernt hatte.

Diese Studienreise wurde von der Vereniging voor Noord-Nederlandsche Muziekgeschiedenis finanziert und ist ein frühes Beispiel für ein europäisches Forschungsprojekt in der damals noch ganz jungen Disziplin der Musikwissenschaft.

Auf einen erheblich größeren Quellenbestand konnte Seiffert sich bei seiner revidierten Edition von 1943 stützen:15 Ihm standen dabei die im Schloss der Grafen zu Lynar in Lübbenau wieder aufgefundene Handschrift LyA1, die im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts bekannt gewordene umfangreiche Clavierhandschrift WM aus dem Wiener Minoritenkonvent und die aus Bártfa (ehemals Bartfeld) in Oberungarn stammenden Tabulaturen BP zur Verfügung. Allerdings erwies sich Seifferts Zuschreibung einer Reihe anonym überlieferter Werke in der Mehrheit als nicht zutreffend. Wichtige Anregungen für die Sweelinck-Forschung gingen von der Zuschreibungskritik Werner Breigs (1960), der quellenkundlichen Arbeit von Lydia Schierning (1961), der Studie über die Claviermusik Sweelincks von Alan Curtis (1963) und von Breigs detaillierter Untersuchung der Lübbenauer Handschriften LyA1 und LyA2 (1968) aus.16 Das Ergebnis war eine eher pessimistische Sicht der Quellenlage, bei der die Überlieferung grundsätzlich als unzusammenhängend dargestellt wurde.

Unter diesen Voraussetzungen ist es erstaunlich, dass Gustav Leonhardt im ersten Band der Sweelinck-Gesamtausgabe von 1968 seine Editionspraxis im Wesentlichen auf Einzelquellen konzentriert hat und damit einen Text im Sinne einer Quellenedition vorlegte. Er erreichte damit einen überzeugenden Notentext, der die Grundlage für das seitdem stark wachsende Interesse an Sweelincks Clavierwerken war. Allerdings war die Zeit noch nicht reif für eine Veränderung von Seifferts Konzept der Quellenübertragung in moderne Notationsformen, das an den Notationskonventionen der deutschen Buchstabentabulatur orientiert war. Diese Konventionen bestanden aus folgenden Elementen: – die Balkung der Sechzehntel in Gruppen von vier Noten entsprechend der regelmäßigen Gruppierung der Rhythmuszeichen in der Tabulatur (im Gegensatz zur unregelmäßigen Balkung der originalen Notierung Sweelincks),

Zur Edition Die vorliegende Edition geht von einem gründlich erforschten Werkbestand aus, der sich auf das Sweelinck-Werkverzeichnis (SwWV)18 sowie bei den nicht an eine Melodievorlage gebundenen Werken (in der Hauptsache die Toccaten und Fantasien) auf die Werkliste mit Tonartidentifikation (C1, g2 …)19 von Pieter Dirksen bezieht.

Werktitel und Zuschreibungsformulierung an Sweelinck entsprechen der Orthographie der Hauptquelle. Ergänzungen zum Titel oder (anzunehmende) niederländische Originaltitel erscheinen in eckiger Klammer. Zusätzlich ist die erwähnte Werkliste hinzugefügt, z. B. für das zweite Werk in Band 1: Toccata 2di Toni (g2). Die dem Notentext zugrunde liegende Quelle ist über dem Vorsatz angegeben, der alle notwendigen Informationen zur originalen Notation enthält. Der Notentext weist nur die nötigsten editorischen Ergänzungen auf. Die Kritischen Bemerkungen am Ende jeden Bandes beschränken sich auf die gegenüber der Hauptquelle vorgenommenen Korrekturen und Vervollständigungen.

In der vorliegenden Edition wurde der Unterschied zwischen den beiden oben beschriebenen Notationssystemen berücksichtigt, indem der gesicherte authentische Bestand in jedem Band in zwei Teilen erscheint. Dabei werden bei Doppelüberlieferung (z. B. Toccaten Nr. 5–8) in Bd. 1, die Quellen in Liniennotation als Hauptquellen, die Tabulaturen als Nebenquellen betrachtet. Alle in Liniennotation überlieferten Werke erscheinen jeweils im ersten Teil, während die ausschließlich in Buchstabentabulatur erhaltenen Kompositionen in einem zweiten Teil zusammengefasst sind. Ein dritter Abschnitt enthält die zweifelhaften, unter Sweelincks Namen oder anonym überlieferten Werke – hier ohne Einteilung nach Notation.

Eine Besonderheit der Liniennotation wurde in das Notenbild unserer Edition übernommen: Bei in Brevisnotation („doppelte“ Taktlänge von zwei ganzen Noten) geschriebenen Stücken bietet häufig ein kleiner Abstand in der Taktmitte eine sinnvolle Lesehilfe.

Die Tabulaturnotation weist anstelle von Taktstrichen einen kleinen Leerraum im Semibrevis-Abstand auf, was hier durch Taktstriche zwischen den Systemen wiedergegeben wird. Die Taktzählung – ein modernes, aber unentbehrliches Element – erfolgt einheitlich im Semibrevis-Abstand (ganze Noten). Die Brevistakte der in Liniennotation überlieferten Stücke sind deshalb immer doppelt gezählt.

Verzierungen und Balkensetzung sind quellengetreu wiedergegeben, ebenso wie die Ligaturen, die häufig auch innerhalb eines Taktes für zwei Noten gleicher Länge angewandt werden. Punktierte Noten über den Taktstrich hinaus werden durch eine angebundene Note ersetzt.

Vorzeichen, die in den Quellen zumeist (aber keineswegs konsequent!) nur für eine einzelne Note gelten, werden dagegen nach moderner Praxis gesetzt, wobei die Brevistakte jeweils wie zwei Takte behandelt werden.

An einigen Stellen wurden Pausen ohne Kennzeichnung ergänzt; sie sind alle in den Kritischen Bemerkungen verzeichnet. Im Falle der in

Liniennotation überlieferten Werke kommt noch die sehr wichtige Verteilung der Noten auf die Systeme hinzu, die genau nach Quelle übernommen wurde. Die in LyA1 oft (aber unregelmässig) gesetzten Kustoden zur Verdeutlichung der Stimmführung sind durch dünne Verbindungsstriche dargestellt; Ergänzungen erscheinen gestrichelt.

Die Herausgeber legen großen Wert darauf, dass bei der unvermeidlichen Übertragung in ein modernes Notenbild so wenig wie möglich vom Informationsgehalt und von den Hinweisen auf die Intentionen des Komponisten in der originalen Notationsweise verloren geht. In diesem Sinne kann die Ausgabe als eine „Praktische Quellenedition“ bezeichnet werden.

Introduction This new edition of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck’s works for keyboard instruments realizes an editorial concept that diverges from the twentieth-century conventions of scholarly editions. The point of departure was the necessity to make available to users all the information communicated by the sources, and to organize the many divergent readings according to the reliability of the sources, so as to offer a clear and authentic music text. Each volume begins with the works transmitted in staff notation (the notational form used by Sweelinck). These are followed by the works in letter tablature (the notational form of the German Sweelinck school) and by a third section containing the anonymously transmitted or dubious works.

The upright format accentuates the fact that the repertory was principally intended for all keyboard instruments.

We incorporated investigations into the paper and watermarks of the most important sources and traced the paths of transmission of these sources. This has allowed us to uncover close relationships among them, thus shedding a new light on the discussions of the past decades, which had departed from a rather pessimistic evaluation of the reliability of the Sweelinck transmission.

kind of mentor position toward the young Jan Pieterszoon. As to the boy’s musical training, it has solely been documented that he took lessons from the singer and shawm player Jan Willemszoon Lossy from nearby Haarlem. Jan Pieterszoon possibly studied the organ with the reputable organist of St. Bavo church in Haarlem, Floris van Adrichem.

In 1577, at barely 15 years of age, Jan Pieterszoon seems to have made such progress that he was appointed to the organist’s post at the Oude Kerk, which he held until his death. Only one year after assuming this post, however, his duties underwent a radical change: Amsterdam, one of the last Catholic bastions of the northern Netherlands, also became Calvinistic in 1578. The Catholic authorities were chased from the city, and the devout Catholic Jacob Buyck was also forced to flee. The consequences of this confessional turnabout were not as far-reaching as is generally assumed, for the Calvinists did not immediately impose their strict doctrines. Instead, they allowed the limited coexistence of a kind of „open“ church for several decades.4 Though adapted to the Genevan model, the church service retained many elements of the old rite. This enabled the population to make a more gradual transition to Calvinism. The prerequisite for this extraordinary development was the pronounced moderation of the first generation of Calvinist church fathers. It was not until after the turn of the century that orthodox Calvinism grew stronger, giving rise to a conflict between the Remonstrants and the CounterRemonstrants (the orthodox Calvinists) which was ultimately won by the supporters of strict Calvinism at the Synod of Dordrecht in 1619, thus shortly before Sweelinck’s death.

Calvinism regarded organs and organ playing as one of the major relicts of the Catholic rite. It forbade organ playing during the religious service, and ordered the removal of all organs from the churches. However, the municipal authorities of Amsterdam (and of other Dutch cities) owned the churches and their organs, and wanted to protect the costly instruments which they had often just recently acquired. They also retained the organists as municipal employees.

This is what happened to young Jan Pieterszoon, who was thus no longer active as a liturgical organist from 1578 onward. The new Calvinist guidelines demanded only limited liturgical duties from the organist, chiefly the playing of preludes and postludes at the church service, in order to familiarize the faithful with the new psalm tunes. In addition, Sweelinck was entrusted with the organization of public concerts. These were played above all on the two organs of the Oude Kerk, but could also involve performances on the harpsichord at official city functions. Sweelinck’s trip to Antwerp in 1604 to purchase an instrument from the celebrated Ruckers workshop is to be seen in the light of these municipal duties. (Incidentally, the harpsichord’s lid, featuring an allegorical depiction of the city of Amsterdam, has recently been rediscovered.5) Sweelinck’s further travels were limited, it seems, to organ inspections within the borders of the then young Dutch Republic: Haarlem (1594), Deventer (1595 and 1616), Middelburg (1603), Nijmegen (1605), Harderwijk (1608), Rotterdam (1610), Delft (1610), Dordrecht (1614), Rhenen (1616) and Enkhuizen (1621, shortly before his death on 16 October).

Sweelinck, who had been raised in the thriving Catholic organ tradition and apparently found little that appealed to him in orthodox Calvinism, seems to have remained faithful to the Catholic faith along with his family, but conducted himself in society as an openminded and liberal citizen. He belonged to a sizable and – for his era – typical class of enlightened Amsterdam merchants, municipal employees and artists. Although he accepted the new psalter, he apparently had little esteem for the rather poor translation by the Reformed Dutchman Petrus Datheen. Sweelinck’s setting of the original French source for all 150 psalms in four- to eight-part vocal polyphony is his principal vocal work. In addition, he also published

The underlying concept of this edition is to offer – a presentation of the music text based on the visual appearance of the sources (note values, length of measures, time signatures, distribution of the hands, beaming, original titles) – a new evaluation of the sources in relation to their provenance and their notational forms – a delimitation of the Sweelinck repertoire on the basis of the research of the past decades and of the new Sweelinck Work Catalogue (SwWV),1 which is currently in preparation – an assessment and assimilation of the research conducted in recent years on the life and works of the composer.2 The repertoire is distributed among four volumes to allow a comfortable handling of each volume by performing musicians.

Biographical Notes3

In 1564 the organist Pieter Swibbertszoon moved with his family from Deventer to Amsterdam, where he took up one of the most important organist’s posts in Holland, at the Oude Kerk. Unfortunately, he had little time to exercise his talent on the two Niehoff organs of 1542 and 1545, which were renowned even at that time, for he died in 1573. He left a wife, Elsken Jansdochter Sweling, and four children, including seven-year-old Gerrit (1566 – after 1610), who became a well-known painter, and eleven-year-old Jan (1562–1621). Both brothers later adopted their mother’s family name, albeit in different spellings. The family, now without a breadwinner, seems to have obtained sufficient support from the city and the church. Moreover, the eldest son’s musical talent became apparent in his earliest childhood and was cultivated in view of his possible succession to his father as organist. It would appear that the pastor of the Oude Kerk, Jacob Buyck (brother of Amsterdam’s powerful burgomaster Joost Buyck), played an important role in the youth’s upbringing.

According to a reliable tradition, this enlightened man assumed a

10 an important collection of Latin motets, many of them on texts of Catholic provenance. This collection, the Cantiones sacrae, was printed in the Catholic city of Antwerp in 1619 and perhaps represents Sweelinck’s answer to the Synod of Dordrecht, which had yielded disheartening results for the progressively minded. Finally, Sweelinck also wrote several collections of secular vocal works based on French and Italian poems.

The city of Amsterdam was quick to recognize Sweelinck’s importance. His salary of 100 guilders per year, which is ascertainable from 1580, was raised to 200 guilders in 1586. After his marriage to Claesgen Dircxdochter Puyner from Medemblik (a small town about 50 km north of Amsterdam) in 1590, his salary was raised to 300 guilders and also included free lodging. His last raise occurred in 1607 and reached the sum of 360 guilders. Sweelinck also earned considerable sums from his teaching activity, which began to play an important role in 1600. Students from neighboring Germany can be ascertained from 1606 onwards. After overcoming many difficulties, the Lutherans were allowed to open a church in Amsterdam in 1605, which was no doubt the reason why many important younger organists from the Lutheran cities of northern and middle Germany could come to Amsterdam. Among them were Jacob and Johan Praetorius, Heinrich Scheidemann and Ulrich Cernitz of Hamburg; Paul Siefert and Matthias Leder of Danzig; Jonas Zornicht of Königsberg; Melchior Schildt of Hanover; August Brücken of Berlin; Samuel and Gottfried Scheidt of Halle; and Andreas and Martin Düben of Leipzig. It was also in part thanks to Sweelinck’s teaching that Hamburg became a stronghold of northern European organ music until far into the eighteenth century, culminating in Johann Sebastian Bach as its last representative. Sweelinck’s major compositions also date from this late phase, which in all likelihood began around 1606 concurrently with his more concentrated teaching activity.

A document from the year 1615 pertaining to the young Andreas Düben’s period of study in Amsterdam sheds a fascinating light on Sweelinck’s teaching practice. One reads that the Leipzig native’s stay has been extended “…so that he can learn his craft more effectively and perfectly master the art of composing and learn the art of fugal playing from the ‘Fundament’…”.6 Organ instruction was thus not only oriented toward the traditional art of improvisation based on a stock (the “Fundament”) of imitative, sequential and cadential formulae, but also involved the composition of works for keyboard instruments. Sweelinck’s adaptation of large sections of Gioseffo Zarlino’s counterpoint method (Istitutioni harmoniche, 1558–89), which played an important role in the German Sweelinck tradition until the late seventeenth century, must be seen in this light.7 The exceptional status of Sweelinck’s organ instruction, which generally lasted two to three years, derives not least from the fact that not only young students but also acclaimed personalities such as Jacob Praetorius and Samuel Scheidt made their way to Amsterdam.

Ultimately, it was a kind of master class whose special rank is also substantiated by the considerable fees that Sweelinck was able to demand for his instruction. It is known, for instance, that an honorarium of 200 guilders was paid in 1613 for the apprenticeship of one single pupil, August Brücken, who was financially supported by the Prince Elector of Brandenburg.8 This is more than half of the annual salary of 360 guilders that Sweelinck was paid by the city.

The high fee no doubt also included access to Sweelinck’s many keyboard works and guild-like permission to make copies.

important prerequisite for this was no doubt the fact that Sweelinck’s duties – detached from the traditional liturgical framework – offered him an artistic freedom that was unusual for the time.

Sweelinck initially used this freedom exclusively for the composition of a large body of vocal works. He mastered the art of vocal polyphony in a virtuoso manner, whereby his psalm motets, Latin motets, madrigals and chansons still thoroughly reflect the humanistically colored “Netherlands” tradition of sixteenth-century polyphony.

This was the style that every talented composer strove for in the late sixteenth century, and Sweelinck successfully asserted his mastery in this domain. Less obvious was his interest in writing keyboard music, for as a performing artist, Sweelinck was foremost a brilliant improviser, and it is very likely that his keyboard playing was limited exclusively to improvisation for several decades.

Around the turn of the century, Sweelinck increasingly came into contact with other traditions that devoted themselves to the “written” work as well as to improvisation. Particularly important here are the schools of London (William Byrd and his followers), Brussels (the Byrd pupil Peter Philips), Venice (Claudio Merulo, Giovanni and Andrea Gabrieli) and Hamburg (Hieronymus Praetorius). Confronted with the multi-faceted and elaborately notated clavier music of these traditions, Sweelinck realized that the contrapuntal refinement of his vocal polyphonic technique could be transferred to the keyboard. On the basis of these pan-European influences and of the firm background he had acquired in his years-long experience as a vocal composer and extemporizer on keyboard instruments, he created a new form of instrumental polyphony that was perfectly tailored to the technical resources of two hands playing on one keyboard, but that also never eschewed a strict voice-leading. Nevertheless, he obviously rejected the intabulation practice of the sixteenth century, i.e. the transference of vocal polyphony to clavier instruments.

The elaboration of a genuine keyboard polyphony was not limited to a single genre such as the fantasia, but was applied to all genres, including secular variations and toccatas. Also completely new was the continuous use of repetition structures, the ‘repetitio variata’, in the figuration. As a result of these hallmarks of Sweelinck’s art, the forms cannot be strictly separated one from the other. Typical toccata characteristics appear in song variations and fantasias, for example, and fantasia themes are elaborated in the style of variations.

Sweelinck’s music for keyboard instruments also exhibits two distinctive characteristics that are found in his vocal music as well, namely a mastery of all types of polyphony (from the bicinium to multi-part counterpoint) and a predilection for interdenominational textual and melodic sources. In his clavier writing Sweelinck often shifts from two-part to four-part writing; the latter is rarely exceeded. And within the bounds set by writing polyphony and figurations for two hands, he also achieves an optimal independence of the voices. Sweelinck was open to all musical traditions and was not bound to any specific confession due to his origins and the unique status of his post.

Consequently, he wrote variations not only on the tunes from the Genevan Psalter, but also on Catholic hymns and Lutheran chorales (no doubt supplied to him by his German pupils), as well as on the then popular secular songs and dances of English, French, German and Dutch provenance.

To understand this music, it is also important to know that Sweelinck only wrote his keyboard œuvre more or less during the last fifteen years of his life. It was thus only when he was well into his 40s that he began writing clavier pieces – undoubtedly a unique case in the history of keyboard music! The fact that all of his (surviving) clavier pieces were written during his maturity explains both their great stylistic unity and their consistently high quality. More than 60 works from his overall output have survived, which suggests a great productivity and reflects the high esteem in which this virtuoso and substantial keyboard œuvre was held by his contemporaries and later generations.9

The Keyboard Music Sweelinck’s keyboard music occupies an outstanding position in the music of the early seventeenth century. It can be seen as a mirror of the European music of its time, unique in its rich variety and inventive profusion of formal models, themes and figurations. One

Considerably more extensive is Sweelinck’s vocal œuvre, which was published in seven prints between 1594 and 1621 in Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden and Antwerp. But while Sweelinck’s reputation as a vocal composer was consolidated during his lifetime, as a keyboard composer he was esteemed above all by connoisseurs and musicloving amateurs.

Today the opposite holds true: Sweelinck’s clavier works are a constant factor of our keyboard repertory, whereas his vocal works are only rarely performed. The particular attention lavished on Sweelinck as a keyboard composer, especially in the past 40 years, results in part from the fact that it is increasingly possible to play his works on adequate historical or recent instruments. The original Ruckers instruments and their reproductions, as well as historical organs such as those in Alkmaar, Leiden, Oosthuizen and Uttum, or new and reconstructed organs throughout the world (including the German Church in Stockholm) offer the fundamental prerequisites for an authentic performance of his music. Sweelinck’s keyboard works can thus once again be heard in their specific musical originality, and have become an essential component of musical world culture, not least through their dissemination on recordings.

The letter tablature (with series of letters disposed in a score-like arrangement) was the notational form preferred by German organists. Its widespread circulation reflects the enormous popularity of Sweelinck’s music. This branch of the transmission is remarkably reliable, in spite of divergences in the notation and notwithstanding the fact that these copies were often made long after Sweelinck had penned his original manuscripts. Only with the latest tablatures dating from the 1660s and 70s, such as those from Budapest (BP) or from Berlin’s Amalienbibliothek (AmB) do questions of authenticity and text assume greater urgency. The other tablatures dated prior to 1650, in their turn, offer a rewarding and substantial overview of Sweelinck’s clavier music, both with respect to quality and quantity. Particularly worthy of our attention here are the Lübbenau “B” tabulatures (LyB), the manuscript from the Graues Kloster in Berlin (GK) and the Turin tabulatures (Tor), which stem from southern Germany. The latter source transmits the largest stock of clavier music from the seventeenth century.

The difference between staff notation and letter tablature in relation to modern notation can be demonstrated most easily through the different forms of the barline. Letter tablature has no barlines, but only distinct spaces between the letters after every whole note (semibreve). Staff notation has barlines, just as in modern notation. In Sweelinck’s notation, as we can see in LyA1, these vertical lines are placed at the interval of a breve (Ä ). In the present edition, the works transmitted in staff notation have been given the customary barlines (chiefly divided into large breve measures), whereas the repertoire transmitted in letter tablature has been edited with lines placed between the staves at the interval of whole notes (semibreves). The notation of the source can thus also be inferred from the modern transcription.

At this point, one must draw attention to a third notational form that was common in Sweelinck’s day and can be observed in several sources. This is a form of staff notation with two five-line staves placed very closely together. In some sources they are so close as to suggest a single ten-line staff; an example of this is the sizable manuscript from the Vienna Minoritenkonvent WM. This notational form also served as composition notation (‘tabula compositoria’).11 In the source descriptions (especially for the toccatas), one will find a further discussion of the various notational forms in the context of Sweelinck’s notation. This has become possible due to a new evaluation of the sources that are dispersed throughout Europe, and of the connections within their transmission. The most important result of this research is the establishment of a high degree of authenticity for the manuscript LyA1, which contains not only a virtually flawless transcription of Sweelinck’s works in close conformity with the autographic writing form, but also a substantial part of the international clavier repertoire available in Sweelinck’s household (along with its fellow manuscript LyA2). Also discussed is the remarkable reliability of the letter tablature GK, for which the scribe, no doubt a German student, most probably used a Sweelinck manuscript (in staff notation) as his model. Another relationship that will deserve scholars’ attention in the future is that between Sweelinck and Christian Erbach (c. 1570–1635), which has yet to be adequately examined. Erbach set up a lucrative teaching system in Augsburg, which was very similar to Sweelinck’s situation in Amsterdam. The joint transmission of the works of Sweelinck and Erbach in some of the most important sources and the stylistic correspondences among them point to a contact that remains to be substantiated. The possibility that the Turin tablatures also stem from Augsburg must also be investigated in this context. Finally, Sweelinck’s personal relations with Peter Philips and John Bull evidence the active exchanges cultivated by Sweelinck in the Catholic-dominated organ world of the southern Netherlands and in England.

Source Evaluation and Notation Only at first glance does the state of the transmission of Sweelinck’s keyboard music seem unsatisfactory. Everything has come down to us in manuscript form, but no autographs have survived. In the course of the research conducted for this edition, it has come to light that the most important Sweelinck source, Lynar A 1 (LyA1), was most likely written chiefly in Amsterdam by Sweelinck’s pupil Andreas Düben, the son of the St. Thomas organist in Leipzig, who later became a leading musical personality in Stockholm. This thus solves the mystery surrounding what is no doubt the most important manuscript of clavier music from the second decade of the seventeenth century, and its relation to Sweelinck. In addition, Sweelinck’s extensive teaching activity and his outstanding reputation as a composer of clavier music led to a veritable proliferation of posthumous copies, which ensured the survival of many of his masterworks. All this is responsible for the stylistically and qualitatively highly homogeneous transmission of a sizable and firmly delimited group of works, whereby the problematic cases are of surprisingly little significance, both with respect to quantity as well as quality.10 In the sources, Sweelinck’s clavier music is notated in two distinct forms: staff notation and letter tablature.

Sweelinck used the staff notation common to English and Dutch composers (two staves containing six lines each) for the majority of his clavier works. It is reflected above all in the Berlin manuscript LyA1, in a form which closely follows the autograph writing. This manuscript is by far the most important source, also with respect to the number of works it transmits. Sweelinck’s works are also notated in a very similar manner in the source FM, the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. These two manuscripts transmit the greatest quantity of clavier music by Sweelinck. Contrary to virtually every previous edition, the present new edition respects the unique characteristics of this particular notational form.

Other important sources of staff notation are the Liber Fratrum Cruciferorum Leodinensium (LFCL, also written during the composer’s lifetime, just as LyA1 and FM), the manuscript BB1 (today in Kraków), copied most likely in Brussels in the 1620s, and, not least,

12 History of Edition While the first publication of clavier music by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was issued in 1871,12 the first edition claiming to be complete was presented by Max Seiffert in 1894.13 Seiffert based himself on the findings laid down in his Berlin dissertation on Sweelinck and his German pupils,14 which had been published some years earlier and had triggered an enormous interest in Sweelinck in the professional musical world. His edition, however, suffered from the fact that the main source, LyA1, which had reappeared in Lübbenau, south of Berlin, around 1840, could no longer be found; fortunately, it had been partially copied. Next to these few copies from LyA1, Seiffert based himself chiefly on the Berlin tablature GK, the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book and several other sources which he had examined on a study trip to the Netherlands and England. This study trip was financed by the Vereniging voor Noord-Nederlandsche Muziekgeschiedenis and is an early example of a European-scale research project in the then still very young discipline of musicology.

In his revised edition of 194315 Seiffert was able to expand his stock of sources considerably, since he was now able to consult the manuscript LyA1, which re-emerged in the castle of the Counts of Lynar in Lübbenau. Moreover, he also examined the clavier manuscript WM from the Vienna Minoritenkonvent, which had been discovered during the first part of the twentieth century, and the tablatures BP which stemmed from Bártfa (formerly Bartfeld) in Upper Hungary.

Nevertheless, Seiffert’s attribution of a number of anonymously transmitted works proved to be incorrect in the majority of cases.

Important stimuli for Sweelinck research were provided by Werner Breig’s attribution critique (1960), Lydia Schierning’s source study work (1961), Alan Curtis’s study of Sweelinck’s clavier music (1963) and Breig’s detailed examination of the Lübbenau manuscripts LyA1 and LyA2 (1968).16 The result was a rather pessimistic view of the state of the sources, with the transmission being fundamentally depicted as lacking in cohesion.

Under these circumstances, it is amazing that in the first volume of the Sweelinck Complete Edition of 1968, Gustav Leonhardt focused his editorial undertaking essentially on individual sources, thus presenting a text in conformity with the principles of a source edition. He provided a compelling text that became the basis and starting point of a rapidly growing interest in Sweelinck’s keyboard works. However, the time was not yet ripe for a change in Seiffert’s concept of the transcription of the sources into modern notational forms oriented on the notational conventions of German letter tablature. These conventions consisted of the following elements: – the beaming of the sixteenth notes in groups of four notes corresponding to the regular grouping of the rhythmic markings in the tablature (contrary to the irregular beaming of Sweelinck’s original notation) – the preference for a structural and logical distribution of the parts to the two staves (contrary to the distribution of the hands in the Netherlands-English staff notation, which reflects the actual performance manner) – the standardization of all the measures to the length of a semibreve unit (whole notes) and – the standardization of the time signatures (c instead of c).

of the critical commentary. In this manner, the Critical Notes of Gustav Leonhardt, Alfons Annegarn and Frits Noske in the three volumes of the Sweelinck Complete Edition of 1968, with their extensive listings of various readings, retain their validity as documentary evidence.17

Notes on the Edition The present edition is based on a thoroughly researched repertoire detailed in the Sweelinck Work Catalogue (SwWV)18 and in Pieter Dirksen’s list of works according to key identification (C1, g2 …)19 for those pieces not linked to a vocal source (essentially the toccatas and fantasias).

The work titles and attributions to Sweelinck correspond to the spelling of the primary source. Additions to the title or (presumed) original Dutch title have been placed in brackets. Moreover, the above-mentioned work list has also been supplied; thus the second work in Volume 1, for example, is designated as Toccata 2di Toni (g2).

The source on which the music text is based is indicated above the clefs and signatures in the prefatory addendum, which contains all the necessary information on the original notation. The music text contains only few editorial interventions. The Critical Notes at the end of each volume are limited to the emendations and completions made in relation to the primary source.

We have also taken into consideration the difference between the two previously described notational systems by presenting the ascertainably authentic repertory in two sections in each volume, whereby the sources in staff notation are considered as primary sources and the tablatures as secondary sources if there is a double transmission in both notations (e.g. Toccatas nos. 5–8). All works transmitted in staff notation are placed in the first section, whereas the compositions transmitted exclusively in letter tablature are placed in the second section. A third section contains dubious works transmitted under Sweelinck’s name or anonymously; they are not organized according to their notational system.

One special characteristic of the staff notation was adapted for the text of our edition: in the works written in breve notation (“double” length measures of two whole notes), a small gap in the middle of the measure often offers a practical reading aid. Instead of barlines, the tablature notation has a little space at the distance of a semibreve which is represented here by lines drawn between the staves. The numbering of the measures – a modern but indispensable element – occurs regularly at the interval of a semibreve (whole note). The breve measures of the pieces transmitted in staff notation thus always count for two. (The complete analyses as given in The Keyboard Music of Sweelinck [see Note 2], can thus continue to be used without problem.)

Ornaments and beaming have been reproduced with fidelity to the sources, just as the ligatures that are often used within the measure for two notes of the same length. Dotted notes extending over the barline are replaced by a tied note. Accidentals that are generally (but far from consistently!) valid for only one single note in the sources have, however, been set according to modern-day practice, whereby the breve measures are treated respectively as two measures.

Rests were added in a few places without any special indication; they are all listed in the Critical Notes. In the case of the works transmitted in staff notation, the important issue of the distribution of the notes between the staves was carried out exactly according to the source. The custods placed often (but not regularly) in LyA1 to clarify the voice-leading are reproduced here by thin connecting lines; additions are printed as broken lines.

The editors would like to emphasize that they have kept as much as possible of the content and the composer’s intentions as reflected in the original notation during the inevitable transposition into a modern visual form of the music text. In this sense, the edition can be called a “practical” source edition.

Seiffert had apparently decided to adopt this system in 1891 since he did not yet have at his disposal the most important manuscript source in staff notation, LyA1, in the original. The kinship between the notation of LyA1 and Sweelinck’s writing style was also not properly recognized in the twentieth century. More recent research culminated in Pieter Dirksen’s dissertation, completed in 1996, and the Sweelinck Studies that were published in 2002 (see Note 2).

The text of the present edition is not based on a collation of various manuscripts, but essentially on one single source (primary source) for each individual work, which is only slightly supplemented through readings from a secondary source. This allowed us to restrict the size

Die Fantasien Es darf als ein Glücksfall bezeichnet werden, dass sich von Sweelinck mindestens zwei – vielleicht sogar drei – gesicherte und wertvolle Abbildungen erhalten haben.1 Die bedeutendste ist das 1606 entstandene Porträt, das wahrscheinlich von Sweelincks Bruder Gerrit gemalt wurde und zur Sammlung des Gemeentemuseum Den Haag gehört (siehe Band 1 dieser Edition). Es zeigt den Meister auf der Höhe seines Könnens und zählt zu den eindringlichsten und lebendigsten Komponistenporträts überhaupt.2 Zugleich hat es eine weitere Bedeutung im Hinblick auf Sweelincks künstlerische und historische Position. Große Sorgfalt hat der Maler auf die besonders ausgeleuchteten Hände angewandt. Die aus dem gemalten Rahmen herausragende linke Hand zeigt dabei eine bezeichnende Geste, mit abgebogenem Kleinem und Ringfinger und ausgestreckten übrigen drei Fingern, die zweifellos in rhetorischem Sinne verstanden werden muss: es ist die beredte Gebärde eines Redners, der um Ruhe und Gehör bittet3 – also eine emphatische Geste zu Beginn einer Rede, wobei hier in Sweelincks Sinn natürlich die Klangrede gemeint ist. Dieses Porträt unterstreicht den Platz des Komponisten in einer humanistisch-rhetorischen Musiktradition. Entsprechend bilden die Prinzipien der Rhetorik auch die feste Grundlage seines Schaffens.

Für keine Gattung trifft dies mehr zu als für die Fantasien, die als Höhepunkt seines Clavierschaffens betrachtet werden können.

Die Fantasie als musikalische Gattung ist eine der wichtigsten Konsequenzen der musikhistorisch so entscheidenden Berührung zwischen Humanismus und Musik.4 ,Fantasia‘ entstammt dem griechischen Gedankengut und entstand am Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts durch die Verbindung der humanistischen Ästhethik mit den zeitgenössischen Künsten. Der abstrakte Begriff steht für das „Höchste“, das ein Künstler als Individuum erreichen konnte.5 Er wurde gerne für die neu komponierte Instrumentalmusik des 16.

Jahrhunderts aufgegriffen, die, in Ermangelung der traditionellen Unterstützung durch den Text, ständig auf der Suche nach entsprechenden Konzepten und passender Terminologie war. Der Aspekt des „Höchsten“ wurde wie selbstverständlich zur kunstvollsten Art der damaligen komponierten Musik, nämlich zu der des imitativen Kontrapunkts der franko-flämischen Schule, in Beziehung gebracht. Die individuelle Form der Fantasia erforderte zudem vom Komponisten ein bestimmtes Maß an Originalität.

Denn er musste ohne formale oder inhaltliche Stütze etwa in Form eines Textes oder eines Tanzmusters seinen eigenen Fantasia-Typus mehr oder weniger kreieren. Es überrascht deshalb nicht, dass dieser Prozess innerhalb der Gattung der Clavierfantasie am konsequentesten durchgeführt wurde: Nicht nur, weil ein einzelner Spieler die gesamte polyphone Struktur darstellen konnte, sondern besonders auch deshalb, weil Komponist und Interpret hier in einer Person vereint waren.

Von zentraler Bedeutung für das Verständnis des Sweelinckschen Fantasie-Typus erweist sich die bekannte Beschreibung von Thomas Morley aus dem Jahre 1597, die zweifellos aus dem Geist seines Lehrers William Byrd heraus zu verstehen ist (für den englischen Originaltext, vgl. S. 22):6 „Die weitaus wichtigste Art von Musik, die ohne Text gemacht wird, ist die Fantasie – wenn ein Musiker ein Thema frei auswählt und es nach Belieben verändert und dreht, daraus entweder viel oder wenig macht, wie er selbst es für richtig hält. In diese [Gattung] darf man mehr Kunst hineinlegen, als in jede andere Musik[art], da der Komponist an nichts gebunden ist, sondern hinzufügen, verkleinern, und ändern kann nach seinem Vergnügen. Und diese Gattung verträgt jede Art von Freiheit, die auch in anderer Musik geduldet werden kann, mit Ausnahme des Änderns des Themas und des Verlassens der Tonart, was in Fantasien nie vorkommen soll. Außerdem kann

man nach Belieben Überbindungen mit Dissonanzen, schnelle und langsame Bewegungen, Proportionen usw. benützen.“ Es ist erstaunlich, wie genau Sweelincks Fantasiencorpus auf diese ausführliche Beschreibung passt, und zwar weitaus schlüssiger als die meisten, wenn nicht sogar alle Fantasien der englischen Tradition selbst.7 Nach Morley handelt es sich beim Typus „Fantasie“ also um eine umfassende Komposition in imitativer Kontrapunktik mit einem einzigen Thema für ein polyphones Einzelinstrument, verbunden mit einer Vielzahl kunstvoller Techniken. Diese Kompositionstechniken sind im humanistischen Sinne „rhetorisch“: sie sind alle der oratorischen Redekunst entlehnt (z. B. ,Augmentatio‘, ,Diminutio‘, ,Syncope‘ und ,Inversio‘) und essentiell für den in dieser Gattung angestrebten hohen Grad an Kunstfertigkeit und kompositorischer Ambition. Kein anderer Komponist hat Morleys Forderungen derart wörtlich genommen und schon allein aus diesem Grunde können die Fantasien Sweelincks als Kulminationspunkt dieser als „humanistische“ Clavierfantasie zu bezeichnende, traditionsreiche Instrumentalgattung betrachtet werden.

Diese hervorragende Stellung verdanken sie aber auch einem Zusammentreffen weiterer äußerer und innerer Faktoren. Zu den ersteren gehört neben der ausgiebigen Anwendung aller in polyphoner Musik möglichen rhetorisch-musikalischen Figuren auch die Anwendung der ganzen Skala der ,Imitatio‘-Technik, angefangen bei Monothematik und Kanon bis hin zu einfachsten Echo-Techniken. Die Form ist in der Regel die einer klassischen, dreiteiligen Rede (die ,Forma‘), die unter genau durchdachter Proportionierung aus ,Exordium‘, ,Medium‘ und ,Finis‘ besteht.

In den monothematischen Fantasien entspricht dieser Dreiteilung in der Regel die Abfolge der Themenproportionierung Normalwert-Vergrößerung-Verkleinerung. Ein zusätzliches rhetorisches Element besteht darin, dass das Prinzip der ,Elaboratio‘ einen wichtigeren Platz einnimmt als das Prinzip der ,Inventio‘. Entsprechend basieren die meisten der monothematischen Fantasien Sweelincks auf bereits vorliegenden Soggetti. Zu den inneren Faktoren gehörten die Anwendung eines bereits oben beschriebenen neuartigen Typus von Clavierpolyphonie, die hier ihren natürlichen Höhepunkt findet. Insgesamt zeichnen sich Sweelincks Fantasien durchweg durch ein logisches und zwingendes formales Konzept aus. Dabei lassen sich drei Subgattungen verschiedener Bedeutung unterscheiden: die (monothematische) Ostinato-Fantasie, die Fantasia „auf die Manier eines Echo“ sowie die „eigentliche“ monothematische Fantasie. Dominierend ist der letztgenannte Typus. In keiner anderen Gattung ist es so offensichtlich, dass Sweelinck nie reihenhaft komponierte, sondern immer versuchte, individuelle Einzelwerke zu schaffen.8 Dabei ist häufig wiederum ein parallel erfolgter Komponiervorgang feststellbar, der sich entweder in „Vorstudie“ und „Meisterausführung“ oder in zwei gleichwertigen, stark verwandten Stücken niederschlägt.

Die Gruppe der Ostinato-Fantasien, in denen ein einziges Thema ohne Unterbrechungen (und meist in einer einzelnen Stimme) wiederholt wird, ist vor dem Hintergrund des starken Einflusses von John Bull (um 1560–1628) auf das Schaffen Sweelincks zu sehen. Die besondere Quellenlage der Fantasia Ut sol fa mi (C4) verdeutlicht dies. Das Stück ist in dem Komplex der SweelinckQuellen in Lynar A1 (LyA1) überliefert, in der üblichen hervorragenden Textqualität samt eindeutiger Zuschreibung an Sweelinck. Angesichts der unanfechtbaren Autorität dieser zentralen Quelle gäbe es hier keine Deutungsprobleme, wenn nicht eine

17 bis auf den Schlussteil weitgehend identische Fassung vorläge, die durch einen englischen Druck aus dem 19. Jahrhundert überliefert und unter dem Titel „God save the King“ John Bull zugeschrieben ist. Aus stilistischer Sicht gibt es kaum Zweifel darüber, dass Bull der Autor der Hauptsubstanz des Stückes ist. Der nur in LyA1 überlieferte Schluss scheint aber aus Sweelincks Feder zu stammen, was die Zuschreibung erklärt.9 Bulls Stück ist der Prototyp einer Ostinato-Fantasie mit ununterbrochener Wiederholung eines Viertonsmotivs in einer einzigen Proportion (Semibreven) und auf einer einzigen Stufe im Diskant, mit virtuos figurierten Unterstimmen und Stimmenzuwachs von zwei über drei bis am Schluss vier Stimmen. Doch endet Bulls Stück überraschend verhalten auf der sechsten Stufe. Sweelincks neuer Schluss „korrigiert“ dies durch eine Weiterführung der Bewegung und einem Beharren auf der Grundtonart, wobei das kurze Thema fast lakonisch in vier-, acht- und schließlich sechzehnfacher Diminution erscheint. Auf die Steigerung hin zu vier Stimmen wird dabei verzichtet.

In Sweelincks eigenen Ostinato-Fantasien spielt Bulls Prinzip des Stimmenzuwachses durchaus eine Rolle. So wie in einigen geistlichen Variationswerken (Allein Gott in der Höh, Allein zu dir, Da pacem, Erbarm dich mein, Ich ruf zu dir, Nun freut euch) erlaubt ihm dieses Prinzip, seine Beherrschung von zwei-, drei- und auch vierstimmiger Clavierpolyphonie auf eindrucksvolle Weise vorzuführen; zugleich entsteht durch dieses auskomponierte Crescendo auf dem Tasteninstrument eine ganz natürliche Dynamik.

Im Echtheitsfall wäre die Fantasia G4 Sweelincks älteste OstinatoFantasie. Das Werk ist im Messaus-Bull-Kodex (Lo2) überliefert, einer umfangreichen Antwerpener Quelle aus den 1620er Jahren, die hauptsächlich Werke Bulls enthält. Der Schreiber dieser Quelle, Bulls Schüler (?) Willem Messaus, verfuhr allerdings in der Zuweisung von Stücken an seinen Meister erwiesenermaßen allzu großzügig, was auf sämtliche hier anzutreffende Bull-Unikate einen Echtheitszweifel wirft. Das gilt nicht zuletzt auch für die Fantasia re re re sol ut mi fa sol (G4), die formal Sweelincks unzweifelhaft echten Ostinato-Fantasien G2 und a2 nähersteht als den Modellen Bulls („God save the King“ und die Hexachord-Fantasia II). Auch erscheint die Figurationsweise und konsequentere Durchführung von Motiven insgesamt typischer für Sweelinck als für Bull. Doch finden sich gelegentlich auch Passagen in etwas ungehobelter Satztechnik und wenig elegantem Claviersatz, was bei Sweelinck sonst nicht vorkommt. Die Aufnahme in diese Ausgabe geschieht deshalb mit Vorbehalt. Die Echtheit vorausgesetzt, würde es sich ohne Zweifel um eines der frühesten erhaltenen Werke Sweelincks handeln.10 In den beiden eindeutig authentischen Ostinato-Fantasien weicht Sweelinck noch mehr als schon in der Fantasia G4 von dem strengen Kompositionsprinzip Bulls ab. Das Thema wird auf mehr als einer Stufe und in allen Stimmen durchgeführt sowie die Form gestrafft und im Sinne einer Dreiteiligkeit „rhetorisiert“. Die Fantasia G2 aus LyA1, die dort wohl nicht zufällig im Anschluss an die Fantasia C4 kopiert wurde, ist dafür ein Musterbeispiel. Die rhetorische Forma scheint gleich auf zwei Ebenen präsent: im Prinzip des Stimmenzuwachses (drei Abschnitte von 107, 63 und 30 Takten) und in der wechselnden Art der Kompositionstechnik (160, 10 und 30 Takte). So wird der erste, dominierende Teil (genau 4/5 der Komposition) von 27 Ostinato-Einsätzen gebildet, die – mit einer formal bedingten Ausnahme – in 3 x 9 Einsätze gegliedert sind, nach dem Muster Oberstimme (zweistimmig) – Unterstimme (zweistimmig) – Mittelstimme (dreistimmig). Jeder Abschnitt besteht dabei wieder aus 3 x 3 Einsätze in der Stufenanordnung I–IV–V (mit nur einer formal bedingten Ausnahme am Ende des Bizinium-Teils). Nach einem freien Zwischenspiel in dem die Dreistimmigkeit zu Ende geführt wird, werden dann im vierstimmigen Schlussabschnitt Ostinato-Einsätze aller Stimmen ineinandergeschoben, wodurch ein dichtes Stretto entsteht. Drei

abschließende einzeln stehende Sopraneinsätze stellen die Regeln einer Ostinato-Komposition wieder her, wobei die Stufenanordnung V–I–IV der Finalbildung einer perfekten Schlusskadenz entspricht.

Die große Fantasia a2 übernimmt in wesentlichen Zügen das in G2 entwickelte Muster, bereichert und verfeinert es aber in verschiedenen Punkten; zugleich stehen die beiden Werke in verschiedener Hinsicht (z. B. im Stimmenverhältnis der beiden Bizinien) in einer Art komplementärer Beziehung zueinander.

Fantasia a2 verwendet anstelle des einteiligen ein zweiteiliges Thema, wobei die beiden Segmente sowohl zusammen als auch getrennt verarbeitet werden. In dem einleitenden, wiederum abgeschlossenen Ostinato-Großteil (T. 1–119) wird der zweite Themenabschnitt sequenzierend und auf ständig wechselnden Stufen (I, II, IV, V und VII) weitergeführt. Anstelle eines kurzen Zwischenspiels wird in dieser Fantasia die Dreistimmigkeit viel umfassender (T. 120–164) thematisch durch Ostinato-Einsätze und Engführung des diminuierten Themas weitergeführt, wiederum mit sequenzierender Entwicklung der zweiten Themenhälfte.

Im vierstimmigen Schlussteil (T. 165–247) erreicht Sweelinck durch eine faszinierende Kombination von fugierten, kanonischen und ostinaten Elementen eine wachsende Fragmentierung der thematischen Substanz, die durch erneuter (freier) Themendiminution ab. T. 211 eine weitere Steigerung erfährt. Das Werk ist singulär und anonym in der Tabulatur LyB2 überliefert, aber Stil und Meisterschaft der Komposition sowie die Quellenlage lassen kaum Zweifel an der Autorschaft Sweelincks zu.11 Sweelinck integrierte das Ostinatoprinzip auch als Teiltechnik (Episode im Finis) in seine „eigentlichen“ monothematischen Fantasien. Satztechnisch zwischen diesen letzteren und den Ostinato-Fantasien ist Sweelincks singuläre dreistimmige Fantasia g2 anzusiedeln, die stilistisch in nächster Nähe zur Fantasia a2 steht und gleichfalls in den Stockholmer LyB-Tabulaturen (in LyB4, diesmal mit Zuschreibung) überliefert worden ist. Das in auffallend hoher Lage geschriebene, kompakte Stück kombiniert auf freie und souveräne Weise Imitations- und Ostinatotechniken. Es bildet offenbar den Rest einer Sammlung von acht dreistimmigen Fantasien, deren Veröffentlichung Sweelincks Schüler Samuel Scheidt im Jahre 1630 ankündigte.12

Die Fantasien „auf die Manier eines Echo“

In dieser Gruppe ist das Prinzip der Monothematik durch die Technik des Kanons und der daraus abgeleiteten absoluten Vereinfachung, des Echos, ersetzt. Die Technik könnte als polythematisch oder, besser noch, polymotivisch bezeichnet werden.

Diese Fantasien haben ihren Ursprung in einer niederländischen Tradition von Echo-Spielen, die sowohl in der Dichtkunst als auch in der Musik zu Sweelincks Lebzeiten in Mode waren. Diese im Prinzip schlichte und volkstümliche Technik erfuhr durch Sweelinck in der Kombination Kanon und Echo, gepaart mit eigenständigen formalen Lösungen, eine bedeutende Überhöhung und Verfeinerung. Die kunstvollen Elemente erscheinen wie versteckt hinter einer häufig liedhaften, madrigalistischen Oberfläche. Zwei Arten von Fantasien „auf die Manier eines Echo“ lassen sich unterscheiden: jene in einmanualiger Ausführung (mit Oktav-Echos) und die für zwei Manuale (mit Unisono-Echos) bestimmten. Zu den instrumentenspezifischen Überlegungen dazu, vgl. S. 211.

Lediglich zwei „zweimanualige“ Echokompositionen sind erhalten, die Fantasien d3 und d4. Hauptquelle beider Stücke ist die noch zu Lebzeiten Sweelincks in Lüttich entstandene Handschrift Liber Fratrum Cruciferorum Leodinensum (LFCL), die eine Reihe weiterer „Echos“ enthält, die in ihrer einfachen Struktur sofort die kompositorische Dimension der beiden Stücke Sweelincks

18 erkennen lassen. Nach einer kurzen imitativen Einleitung beschränkt sich die Fantasia d4 ganz auf Echos für die rechte Hand, wobei auf ständige Veränderung der Phrasenlänge besonderer Wert gelegt wird. Die wesentlich ausgedehntere Fantasia d3 zeigt dagegen eine komplexe Struktur. Dieser wiederum dreiteiligen Komposition liegt ein „verborgenes“ Programm mit einer fortwährenden Entwicklung von Polyphonie zu Monodie zugrunde, wobei die Oberstimme zunehmend dominiert. Das Werk beginnt mit einer ausführlichen kanonischen Einleitung (T. 1–79), zuerst dreistimmig, dann vierstimmig, in der verschiedene Motive verarbeitet werden. Obwohl die Stimmen gleichwertig geführt sind, spielt der Sopran schon hier die Rolle eines „primus inter pares“, indem er die thematische Führung innehat.

Im Mittelteil (T. 80–173) wird das kanonische Prinzip zu Echos für die rechte Hand vereinfacht; die beiden Begleitstimmen in der linken Hand bleiben jedoch weitgehend polyphon geführt.

Umrahmt wird der in fünf Abschnitten verlaufende Echoteil von einer imitativen Einleitung (T. 80–89) und einem Fugato als „Postludium“ (T. 157–173). Erst der Finis-Abschnitt (T. 174–221) bringt begleitende Akkorde für die linke Hand, während die Oberstimme ein langes Solo ohne zweimanualige Echos (aber mit einzelnen Oktavechos) erklingen lässt.

Das wohl älteste Beispiel in Oktavecho-Technik ist die anonym in LyB3 überlieferte Fantasia C3. Die zuerst von Max Seiffert vorgenommene Zuschreibung, die später kritisiert wurde, erweist sich bei gründlicher Überprüfung als richtig. Die Stilmerkmale dieser Komposition verweisen eindeutig auf Sweelinck und die Fantasie lässt sich ohne weiteres in sein Clavierwerk eingliedern.13 Zudem stellt das Stück eine Art Vorstudie zu Sweelincks Meisterwerk dieser Gattung dar, der Fantasia C1. Diese ausgedehnte, siebenteilige Komposition bietet ein fesselndes Kaleidoskop kanonischer, toccatenhafter und antiphonaler Elemente mit Soloabschnitten für beide Hände. Sweelinck benützt dabei die meisten der in Fantasia C3 bereits vorhandenen Motive und Figurationsmodelle, und es ist faszinierend zu sehen, wie der Komponist dieses Material bereichert, verändert und vor allem erweitert. Das Stück bildet eine wohl einmalige „tour de force“. – Andere kom-

positorische Akzente prägen zwei weitere Oktavecho-Stücke Sweelincks, die sich hinsichtlich ihrer Form ebenfalls an der Fantasia C3 orientieren: Fantasia a3, singulär in Sammlungen des Berlinischen Gymnasiums zum Grauen Kloster (GK) überliefert, bildet in ihrer motivischen Subtilität, durch Verwendung des neunten Modus mit seiner hochliegenden Tessitur und Anwendung aller schon oben erwähnten Elemente (einschließlich einer klaren dreiteiligen Form), eine der dichtesten (Echo-)Kompositionen. In der Fantasia C2 tritt die Echo-Technik in den Hintergrund zugunsten vielfach variierter, kanonischer und imitatorischer Abschnitte. Ihren Beginn bildet ein auf einem lebhaft fortschreitenden Thema basierender Imitationsabschnitt.

Formaler Abriss von Fantasia G1 EXORDIUM (T. 1–79): Normalproportion

Die „eigentlichen“, monothematischen Fantasien Die quantitativ wie auch vom Umfang her bedeutendste Gruppe der monothematischen, also auf einem einzigen Thema und dem Prinzip der Durchimitation basierenden, vierstimmigen Fantasien verkörpert eine weitere Dimension von Sweelincks „humanistischem“ Kompositionsverfahren und die für ihn typische Vorliebe für das Variationsprinzip. Den meisten, wenn nicht allen verarbeiteten Themen liegen bereits vorhandene Soggetti zugrunde. Es stand weniger die Originalität des Themas, sondern dessen kunstvolle Ausarbeitung im Mittelpunkt. Der Komponist konnte seine Erfindungsgabe an einem bereits bekannten Thema umso besser demonstrieren. Ein Beispiel dafür ist das Thema der Fantasia G1, das auch Sweelincks portugiesischer Zeitgenosse Manuel Rodrigues Coelho (um 1555–um 1635) verarbeitete.14 Dabei ist es eher unwahrscheinlich, dass einer das Werk des anderen kannte, eher ist anzunehmen, dass dieses Thema in europäischen Organistenkreisen im Umlauf war.

In diesem Werk im achten Modus, in dem die „Dominante“ auf der vierten statt fünften Stufe liegt, teilen Kadenzen auf der ersten Stufe das Werk klar in drei Abschnitte, wobei das Exordium das Thema in Grundgestalt und in weitgehend vokal empfundener Polyphonie überwiegend in Viertelbewegung exponiert. Auffallend sind im Thema und dessen Kontrasubjekt die drei einander fast archetypisch gegenübergestellten Grundelemente: einer Dreiklangsbildung (T. 1–3), einem chromatischen Durchgang (T. 3–5) und dem diatonischen Kontrasubjekt. Diese Konstellation und deren Verbindung liefert das Material für die Fantasie und bildet zugleich die Grundlage zu deren auffallendem melodischen Reichtum. Im Medium wird die Bewegung zu Achteln, gelegentlich zu Sechzehnteln gesteigert, wobei das Thema (zunächst noch in Normalproportion, später in Augmentation) zunehmend als eine Art Cantus firmus wahrgenommen wird. Das Medium, wie

üblich der bei weitem längste Abschnitt der Forma, vereint damit sowohl Elemente der Variationstechnik als auch eine weitgespannte „Durchführung“, wobei die dem Thema gegenübergestellten Kontrasubjekte ein weitverzweigtes Netz von motivischen und rhythmischen Beziehungen flechten. Im Finis wird auch das Hauptthema selbst weiterentwickelt: Es erscheint in diminuierter Gestalt in dichten Stretti, ostinatenhaft verarbeitet und schließlich in Grundgestalt als schlussbekräftigende Coda. Die drei Teile der Fantasia G1 verhalten sich etwa im Verhältnis 3:5:2. Unabhängig davon (und das erscheint typisch für Sweelinck) findet sich eine klare Trennung zwischen der Grundgestalt des Themas und dessen Proportionsformen genau in der Mitte des Werkes (T. 131–132), die durch eine deutliche Kadenz auf der vierten Stufe unterstrichen wird.

Deshalb seien die übrigen Werke dieser Gruppe hier nur kurz gestreift. Die gewaltige Fantasia a1 ist vor allem durch das später berühmt gewordene B-A-C-H-Motiv bemerkenswert. Das Thema stammt jedoch offenbar nicht von Sweelinck selbst, sondern erscheint bereits 1594 in einer Fantasie des aus Antwerpen stammenden Lautenisten Gregorius Huwet (Huet).15 Die Besonderheit dieses Werkes als einer der frühesten Fantasien Sweelincks wird deutlich durch eher retrospektive Züge wie der wichtigen Rolle der Stimmpaartechnik, einem noch relativ strengen Festhalten am Thema, der Anwendung des damals schon zunehmend als archaisch empfundenen phrygischen Modus und einer noch nicht ganz durchentwickelten Clavierpolyphonie. Obwohl Sweelincks Handschrift bereits durchweg erkennbar ist, bildet das Werk unübersehbar die Brücke zur imitativen Claviertradition um 1600 (Luython, Byrd, Philips, Andrea Gabrieli usw.).16 Ähnliches gilt wohl für die Fantasia F2, einem weiteren anonymen Stück aus der Tabulatur LyB2, für das – wie bei der aus der gleichen Quelle stammenden Fantasia a2 – kein anderer Komponist als Sweelinck in Frage kommt. Wie jene Ostinato-Fantasie benützt dieses Werk ein zweiteiliges eher liedhaft geprägtes Thema. Das relativ kurze Werk (167 T.) in deutlicher Dreiteiligkeit zeigt alle gewohnten Qualitäten wie formale Ausgeglichenheit, Entwicklung des Themas, lebendige Rhythmik und spielerisch bewältigter Kontrapunkt. Wegen der Bedeutung des ,Pentachords‘ in der ersten Themenhälfte sowie verschiedener anderer Einzelheiten kann es als eine Art Vorstudie zur Hexachord-Fantasie (F1) betrachtet werden. Die Fantasia Ut re mi fa sol la, ein Höhepunkt in Sweelincks Schaffen, ist Teil einer Reihe von Clavierkompositionen, zu der alle großen internationalen Namen der Zeit beigetragen haben. Das neutralste aller Themen (sechs diatonische Töne in steigender und fallender Form) erweist sich als ideal für die Komposition höchst ambitionierter Clavierfantasien. Im Gegensatz zu vielen seiner Kollegen schreibt Sweelinck darüber nicht etwa seine längste oder virtuoseste Komposition, sondern besticht durch ein zwingend-logisches Konzept und beispiellose Entfaltung reichster Clavierpolyphonie. Er benützt dafür eine auffallende Variante seiner monothematischen Fantasienform, indem er im Exordium eine mit einem Themenkopf bereicherte Diminutionsform des Hexachords (Hauptthema) mit fünf augmentierten Einsätzen des Hexachords kombiniert. Im Medium (T. 70–183) werden drei weitere Augmentationseinsätze von sechs Themendarstellungen in Normalproportion, unter zunehmender Aktivität der Gegenstimmen (bis zu Achteltriplierung) abgelöst. Der Proportionswechsel wird durch ein Zwischenspiel (T. 116–137) mit einer besonders intensiven Entwicklung eines dreitönigen Gegenmotivs verbunden, das genau im Zentrum des Werkes anfängt.17 Im Finis (T. 184–227) wird schließlich eine 16telbewegung eingeführt und das jetzt diminuierte Thema den gebräuchlichen Techniken (Stretto, Ostinato) unterworfen, bis es sich in acht- und sechzehnfache Diminution selbst zum „Kontrasubjekt“ entwickelt.

Die Fantasie zeigt somit eine durchgehende Steigerung, wobei sich das Hexachord vom strengen Cantus firmus bis zur spielerischen Stretto-Figur entwickelt. Sweelinck erreicht damit eine erstaunliche Synthese der beiden Hauptstränge der Hexachord-Tradition für Clavier, dem Cantus-firmus- und dem Imitationsstil.18 Nach Auskunft der Hauptquelle dieses Stücks, der Handschrift Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (FM), komponierte Sweelinck das Werk im Jahr 1612 – zu einem Zeitpunkt, der auch den Höhepunkt seiner Kompositionskunst im Vokalwerk darstellt.

Zur selben Zeit ist wohl auch das Gegenstück der Hexachord-Fantasie entstanden, die zweifellos ebenbürtige Fantasia Crommatica (d1). Während die Hexachord-Fantasie auf einem rein diatonischen

Thema basiert, verwendet Sweelinck in der Fantasia d1 ein durchweg chromatisches Thema. Da beide Soggetti aus sechs Tönen bestehen, ist es sogar wahrscheinlich, dass das chromatische Tetrachord als eine radikale, modernistische Entwicklung des Hexachords gesehen werden muss, mit der der Komponist neue Ausdrucksebenen erlangen wollte.19 Unter Anwendung der „normalen“ Forma gelingt Sweelinck tatsächlich eine einheitliche, von vielschichtiger Architektonik und einer bis dahin beispiellosen inneren Dynamik geprägte Komposition. Quasi mit einem Schlag sind alle Versuche chromatischer Instrumentalstücke seiner Vorbilder und Zeitgenossen in den Hintergrund gedrängt, die omnipräsente Chromatik wurde einem geschlossenen tonalen und rhythmischen Konzept und strenger Clavierpolyphonie unterworfen.

Die ausladenden Dimensionen der eher frühen Fantasia a1 werden erst wieder mit zwei Spätwerken erreicht, der Fantasia d2 und dem Ricercar a1, die vor allem aufgrund der nur hier angewandten Technik einer Themendurchführung in vierfacher Augmentation verwandt erscheinen. Trotz ihrer Dimensionen – es handelt sich um die längste erhalten gebliebene Clavierkomposition Sweelincks – entpuppt sich die Fantasia d2 als ein eher „lyrisch“ empfundenes Stück mit überwiegend vokal konzipierter Thematik, durchsichtiger Kontrapunktik, weitgesponnenen Episoden und besonders ausgewogenen Proportionen. Das nur wenig kürzere Ricercar a1 erscheint fast als Gegensatz zur Fantasia d2, mit wesentlich intensiverer Kontrapunktik und Themendurchführung. Die bei Sweelinck singuläre Gattungsbezeichnung (zur Authentizität von Ricercar d1–d3 siehe unten) ist als original anzusehen, denn das Soggetto basiert offenbar auf einem Ricercar-Thema von Andrea Gabrieli. Ein weiterer Grund für die Verwendung einer besonderen Bezeichnung mag in der beispiellosen Breite kompositorischer Techniken – vor allem auch solcher, die der Variationskunst entlehnt sind – liegen. Die Hauptquelle des Stückes, Padua MS 1982 (Pa), bietet zudem einen sehr zuverlässigen Text und es gibt keinen Grund, den hier und in Torino Ms. G7 (TorG7) überlieferten Titel anzuzweifeln.

Im überlieferten Fantasiencorpus ganz für sich steht die singulär in FM erhaltene Fantasia g1, Sweelincks Monumentalbeitrag zur Gattung der ,fuga contraria‘. Hier wird grundsätzlich jeder Themeneinsatz durch seine Umkehrung beantwortet. Sweelinck legt seinem Thema die für diese besondere Gattung entwickelten traditionellen Modelle zugrunde, fügt aber noch weitere Elemente hinzu, wodurch ein reiches, vierteiliges und besonders gesangliches Soggetto entsteht. Er verbindet das Contrario-Prinzip von Anfang an mit Engführung und Kanon, und realisiert hier eine seiner komplexesten Kompositionen, ein wahrer Meilenstein in seiner Kontrapunktik. Man ist hier wieder stark an Morley’s anfangs zitierte Beschreibung der Fantasia erinnert, vor allem an die Feststellung, „in dieser Gattung darf mann mehr Kunst darlegen als in jeder anderer Musikart.“ Genau das hat Sweelinck in dieser reich ausgestalteten Fantasie getan.

In zwei Punkten bedarf die inhaltliche Festlegung des vorliegenden Bandes noch näherer Erläuterung: Die Aufnahme von anonym oder unter anderem Namen überlieferten sowie gattungsspezifisch einzeln stehenden Werken in den Hauptcorpus und die Verweisung von unter Sweelincks Namen überlieferten Stücken in einen Anhang zweifelhafter Werke.

Einige anonym überlieferte Werke, deren Zuschreibung an Sweelinck kaum angezweifelt werden muss, fügen sich nahtlos in das Bild und die Entwicklung seines Œuvres. Es handelt sich hierbei vor allem um die drei anonymen Fantasien aus den LyB-Tabulaturen (C3, F2 und a2), die deshalb in den Hauptteil des Bandes

20 und die oben stehende Werkdiskussion aufgenommen wurden.

Dasselbe gilt für die zwei (auch) mit John Bull in Verbindung gebrachten Ostinato-Fantasien (C4 und G4). Nähere Anmerkungen zur Echtheitsdiskussion dieser Werke siehe oben.

Ein bisher als „Praeludium“ ediertes Werk entpuppt sich bei näherer Betrachtung der Überlieferung als Fantasie: Bei der Fantasia F3 handelt es sich um eine konzentrierte Studie in Sequenzen und Vorhaltstechniken auf der Basis einiger einfacher Motive in streng vierstimmiger Schreibweise. Obwohl Sweelincks Œeuvre kein Gegenbeispiel dazu aufweist, ist das Stück in seiner idiomatischen Clavierpolyphonie typisch für ihn. Darüber hinaus hat das Stück – da es sowohl in LyB2 (anonym) als auch in TorG6 (mit Zuschreibung) erhalten ist – eine zuverlässige Überlieferung.

Außerdem findet sich eine vereinfachte Fassung unter seinem Namen in LyB3, die jedoch kaum von Sweelinck selbst stammen dürfte, denn gerade das bewegliche und lebendige seiner Clavierschreibweise wurde hier beseitigt. Diese Pedaliter-Bearbeitung stammt vermutlich von einem der Düben-Brüder. Sie wurde hier in den Anhang aufgenommen (Nr. 25).

Ein weiterer Einzelfall ist die Fantasia g3 aus der peripheren und späten Quelle St. Petersburg Ms. QN 204 (PB). Allerdings ist das einfache Bizinium kontrapunktisch sauber gearbeitet und besteht im wesentlichen aus einer Aneinanderreihung traditioneller kanonischer Improvisationsmodelle,20 die als Teilmoment in vielen seiner Werke auftreten. Dadurch ist Sweelincks Autorschaft plausibel, weshalb das Stück in den Hauptcorpus dieses Bandes aufgenommen wurde.

Die späte Tabulaturquelle Berlin Mus. Ms. AmB 340 (AmB) enthält einige Fantasien (d1–d4) sowie die Toccata d2 in stark entstellter und fragmentierter Form. Darüber hinaus enthält sie als Unikat ein „Capriccio J. P.“, das hier nur aufgrund der Übereinstimmung mit den gesicherten Sweelinck-Fragmenten aufgenommen wurde (Anhang, Nr. 26). Obwohl auch hier Textkorrumpierungen nicht ausgeschlossen sind, ist es doch eher unwahrscheinlich, dass Sweelinck mit dem chromatischen Stück in Verbindung zu bringen ist.21 Ungewöhnlich für ihn ist schon das Zusammentreffen von steigender und fallender Chromatik (im gesicherten Œuvre bleiben diese getrennt). Die Kontrapunktik und Claviertextur dieses „Capriccio“ – eine Bezeichnung, die bei Sweelinck sonst nirgendwo auftaucht – ist eher verwirrend. Das Stück scheint ohne ein Konzept komponiert zu sein.

Wiederholt angezweifelt wurde eine Gruppe von sechs Unikaten aus den Turiner Tabulaturen, die nach der Entdeckung dieser Quelle in den 1950er Jahren zum ersten Mal von Alfons Annegarn ediert wurde.22 Eine nähere Betrachtung dieser problematischen Gruppe führt zu dem Schluss, dass klar differenziert werden muss zwischen den drei Fantasien (C5, d5 und G3) in TorG6 und den drei Ricercari (d1–d3) in TorG7.23 Die letztgenannten Stücke wurden nur deshalb aufgenommen (Anhang, Nr. 27–29), weil sie in den sonst zuverlässigen Turiner Tabulaturen Sweelinck zugeschrieben sind. Stilistisch gibt es aber kaum Verbindungen zu ihm. Das Canzona-artige Ricercar d1 (das gehaltvollste Stück dieser Trias) sowie die toccatenhaften Ricercari d2 und d3 stehen in keiner Beziehung zu den Canzonen-Abschnitten seiner großen Toccaten bzw. dem Toccatenwerk als Ganzem; eher weisen sie auf eine venezianische oder süddeutsche Herkunft hin. Die drei Fantasien aus TorG6 (eine davon wohl irrtümlich als „Fuga“ bezeichnet) zeigen dagegen typische Sweelinck-Merkmale und eine gewisse kontrapunktische Verfeinerung, wenngleich sie noch weit von dessen ausgereiftem, virtuosen Clavierstil entfernt sind. Hier scheint ein sonst nicht greifbares Frühstadium seiner Tastenmusik, und zwar des monothematischen Fantasientypus, dokumentiert zu sein.

The Fantasias It is a veritable stroke of luck that at least two, and possibly even three, valuable, authenticated illustrations of Sweelinck have come down to us today.1 The most important of these is the portrait believed to have been painted by Sweelinck’s brother Gerrit in 1606 and which belongs today to the collections of the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague (see Vol. 1 of this edition). It shows the master at the peak of his artistic career and ranks among the most incisive and vital composer portraits of all time.2 It takes on an even greater significance when seen in the light of Sweelinck’s artistic and historical position. The portraitist lavished great care on the hands, which are uniquely highlighted.

The left hand, which extends beyond the painted frame, makes a characteristic gesture in which the small finger and ring finger are bent, and the other three fingers extended. This is a gesture that must surely be understood in a rhetorical sense: it is the eloquent gesture of a speaker who demands silence and attention,3 an emphatic gesture used at the beginning of a speech – in this case, a musical speech. The portrait underscores the composer’s place within the humanistic rhetorical musical tradition. Accordingly, the principles of rhetoric also form the foundation of his œuvre.

This applies to the fantasias more than to any other genre, for they can be regarded as the summit of his keyboard works. The musical genre of the fantasia is one of the greatest legacies of the interaction between humanism and music, which played such a decisive role in music history.4 The concept of ‘fantasia’ originated with the ancient Greeks and arose in the late fifteenth century through the interplay of humanist aesthetics and contemporary art. The abstract concept stood for the “highest achievement” that an artist could reach as an individual.5 It was applied to the instrumental music of the sixteenth century, a new compositional domain that was constantly searching for adequate concepts and a fitting terminology, since it lacked the traditional support of a text. It seemed perfectly natural to associate the aspect of “highest achievement” with the most elaborate style of composed music of that time, namely the style of imitative counterpoint of the Franco-Flemish school. Individually, the form of the fantasia also demanded a certain degree of originality from the composer.

He had to more or less create his own fantasia type without the support in form or content of, say, a text or dance pattern. It is thus not surprising that this process was carried out the most systematically within the genre of the keyboard fantasia, not only because a single player was able to give voice to the entire polyphonic structure, but also, and quite importantly, because the composer and interpreter were united here in one person.

Of central importance for the understanding of the Sweelinck fantasia type is the well-known description of 1597 by Thomas Morley, which was no doubt written in the spirit of his teacher William Byrd6: “The most principall and chiefest kind of musicke which is made without a dittie is the Fantasie, that is, when a musician taketh a point at his pleasure, and wresteth and turneth it as he list, making either much or little of it according as shall seem best in his own conceit. In this may more art be showne than in any other musicke, because the composer is tide to nothing but that he may adde, diminish, and alter at his pleasure.

And this kind will beare any allowances whatsoever tolerable in other musick, except changing the air & leaving the key, which in fantasias may never be suffered. Other things you may use at your pleasure, as bindings with discords, quicke motions, slow motions, proportions, and what you list.”

It is amazing how well Sweelinck’s corpus of fantasias concurs with this lengthy description. In fact, Sweelinck’s fantasias fit it even more compellingly than most, if not all, of the fantasias of

the English tradition itself.7 According to Morley, the fantasia type is a comprehensive work for a single polyphonic instrument in imitative counterpoint with one sole theme elaborated in a variety of artistic techniques. These techniques are “rhetorical” in the humanistic sense: they are all borrowed from the oratorical art of elocution (e.g. ‘augmentatio’, ‘diminutio’, ‘syncope’ and ‘inversio’) and essential for the high degree of skillfulness and compositional ambition striven for in this genre. No other composer took Morley’s demands so literally. For this reason alone Sweelinck’s fantasias can be seen as the culmination of the instrumental genre of the keyboard fantasia, which can look back on a rich tradition and truly deserves the epithet “humanistic.”

They also owe their outstanding position to a junction of various external and internal factors. Among the first is, next to the profuse employment of all rhetorical-musical figures possible in polyphonic music, the use of the entire range of the ‘Imitatio’ technique, beginning with monothematic and canonic forms, and extending to the simplest echo techniques. The form is generally that of a classical speech (the ‘forma’) in three sections, the ‘exordium’, the ‘medium’ and the ‘finis’, laid out in perfectly planned proportions. In the monothematic fantasias, this tripartite division usually corresponds to the sequence of the thematic proportions normal value – augmentation – diminution. Not to be overlooked is an additional rhetorical aspect: the principle of ‘elaboratio’ ranks higher than the principle of ‘inventio’. Accordingly, most of Sweelinck’s monothematic fantasias are based on pre-existing soggetti. Among the internal factors is the use of the innovative type of keyboard polyphony described above, which finds its natural climax here. On the whole, Sweelinck’s fantasias boast a logical and compelling formal concept. Three sub-genres of varying importance can be discerned here: the (monothematic) ostinato fantasia, the fantasia “in the manner of an echo” and the “genuine” monothematic fantasia. This latter type is predominant. In no other genre does it emerge so clearly that Sweelinck never composed pieces in cycles but always sought to create individual, unique works.8 A parallel compositional process can also be frequently observed here, and which can be seen either as the creation of a “preliminary study” and “master execution” or as the composition of two closely related pieces of equal value.

The group of ostinato fantasias, in which one sole theme is repeated without interruption (and generally in one single part), must be seen against the background of the strong influence exerted

by John Bull (c. 1560–1628) on Sweelinck’s works. The unique circumstances surrounding the sources of the Fantasia Ut sol fa mi (C4) make this clear. The piece has been transmitted in the complex of Sweelinck sources Lynar A1 (LyA1) with its customary outstanding text quality and an unequivocal attribution to Sweelinck. In view of the indisputable authority of this central source, there would be no problems of interpretation if it weren’t for the existence of a broadly identical version of the piece that differs only in the closing section. It has been transmitted in a nineteenth-century English print entitled “God Save The King” and attributed to John Bull. Stylistically, there is little doubt that Bull composed the main substance of the work. The close, however, which is transmitted only in LyA1, seems to stem from Sweelinck’s hand, which explains the attribution.9 Bull’s piece is the prototype of an ostinato fantasia: one finds the uninterrupted repetition of a four-note motif in one sole proportion (semibreves) and on one single degree in the descant; virtuoso

23 figuration in the lower part(s); and the successive augmentation of the parts from two to three and, at the close, four. Yet Bull’s piece ends in a surprisingly restrained fashion on the sixth degree.

Sweelinck’s new ending “corrects” this through a continuation of the movement and an insistence on the main key, whereby the short theme appears almost laconically in fourfold, eightfold and ultimately sixteenfold diminution. There is no progressive buildup of the parts to a four-part texture.

Bull’s principle of voice augmentation plays a considerable role in Sweelinck’s own ostinato fantasias. As in several sacred variation works (Allein Gott in der Höh, Allein zu dir, Da pacem, Erbarm dich mein, Ich ruf zu dir, Nun freut euch), this principle allows him to display his mastery of two-, three- and four-part keyboard polyphony in an impressive manner; at the same time, this written-out crescendo ensures a convincingly natural dynamism on the keyboard instrument. Should the Fantasia G4 be authentic, it would be Sweelinck’s earliest ostinato fantasia. The work was transmitted in the Messaus-Bull Codex (Lo2), a sizable Antwerp source dating from the 1620s which contains chiefly works by Bull. The scribe who wrote this source, Bull’s pupil (?)

Willem Messaus, was, however, ascertainably all too generous in the attribution of pieces to his master. This casts doubts on the authenticity of all the singly transmitted pieces by Bull that are encountered here. This also applies to the Fantasia re re re sol ut mi fa sol (G4), which is formally closer to Sweelinck’s undisputedly authentic ostinato fantasias G2 and a2 than the models by Bull (“God Save The King” and the Hexachord Fantasia II). Moreover, the style of figuration and more consistent development of motifs appear on the whole more typical of Sweelinck than of Bull. Yet one also occasionally finds passages in a somewhat unrefined technique and coarse keyboard writing that are otherwise foreign to Sweelinck’s works. We have included it in this edition with reservations. If we assume that it is genuine, then it would no doubt be one of Sweelinck’s earliest surviving works.10 In the two ascertainably authentic ostinato fantasias, Sweelinck diverges even more markedly from Bull’s strict compositional principle than he did in the Fantasia G4. The theme is elaborated in all parts and on more than one degree, and the form is tautened and brought into a “rhetorical” tripartite structure. A model example of this form is the Fantasia G2 from LyA1, which is found there – hardly by chance – right after the Fantasia C4. The rhetorical forma is discernible on two levels: in the principle of the augmentation of the parts (three sections of 107, 63 and 30 measures) and in the alternating style of the compositional technique (160, 10 and 30 measures). The first, predominant section (exactly 4/5 of the work) is thus built of 27 ostinato entries which are articulated into 3 x 9 entries with one exception resulting from a formal detail. These entries follow the model: upper voice (in two parts) – lower voice (in two parts) – middle voice (in three parts). Each section again consists of 3 x 3 entries in the degree structure I–IV–V (with only one exception at the close of the bicinium section, also due to formal reasons). After a free interlude in which the three-part fabric is brought to an end, ostinato entries of all voices are juxtaposed in the four-part closing section, which gives rise to a dense stretto. Three closing, single soprano entries restore the rules of ostinato composition, whereby the degree order V–I–IV of the finale corresponds to a perfect final cadence.

The great Fantasia a2 reprises a number of fundamental traits found in the model developed in G2, but enriches and refines this model in a number of ways; at the same time, there is a kind of complementary relationship between the two works in a number of aspects (e.g. in the part relationship of the two bicinia). Instead of presenting a theme in one section, Fantasia a2 has a bipartite theme, in which the two segments are elaborated both together and separately. In the large introductory ostinato section, too,

self-contained (mm. 1–119), the second thematic segment is developed sequentially and on continuously alternating degrees (I, II, IV, V and VII). The composer eschews the short interlude here in order to develop the three-part fabric in a much more comprehensively thematic manner (mm. 120–164) through ostinato entries and a stretto with the theme in diminution, again with a sequential development of the second half of the theme. In the four-part closing section (mm. 165–247), Sweelinck increasingly fragments the thematic substance through a fascinating combination of fugal, canonic and ostinato elements. This thematic substance undergoes a further intensification through a renewed (free) diminution of the theme beginning in m. 211.

Although the work is transmitted singly and anonymously in the tablature LyB2, the style and mastery of the work, along with the background of the source, leave little room for doubt concerning Sweelinck’s authorship.11 Sweelinck also integrated the ostinato principle as a partial technique (episode in the finis) in his “genuine” monothematic fantasias. Compositionally, Sweelinck’s singular three-part Fantasia g2 must be situated between these latter pieces and the ostinato fantasias; this fantasia is stylistically very close to the Fantasia a2 and was also transmitted in the Stockholm LyB tablatures (in LyB4, this time with attribution). Written in a strikingly high tonal range, this compact piece combines imitative and ostinato techniques in a free and masterly manner. It apparently constitutes the sole remains of a collection of eight three-part fantasias whose publication was announced in 1630 by Sweelinck’s pupil Samuel Scheidt.12

The Fantasias “in the Manner of an Echo” In this group, the monothematic principle is replaced by the canon technique and its absolute reduction, the echo. This technique could also be called polythematic or, better yet, polymotivic. These fantasias derive from a Netherlandish tradition of echo interplays that were fashionable both in the poetry and the music of Sweelinck’s time. This basically simple and folkloric technique underwent a significant artistic elevation and refinement through Sweelinck’s combination of canon and echo paired with independent formal solutions. The artistically intricate elements seem to hide behind a songful, madrigalistic façade. We can distinguish two types of echo fantasias: those to be played on one manual (with octave echoes) and those intended for two manuals (with unison echoes). See p. 211 for considerations pertaining to the specific instrumental medium.

Only two echo pieces for two manuals have survived, the Fantasias d3 and d4. The primary source of both pieces is the manuscript Liber Fratrum Cruciferorum Leodinensum (LFCL), which was written in Liège during Sweelinck’s lifetime. It contains a number of additional “echo” pieces whose simple structure brings the compositional dimension of the two Sweelinck pieces into focus.

After a short imitative introduction, the Fantasia d4 focuses entirely on echoes for the right hand, whereby particular importance is placed on the constant variation of the length of the phrases.

The considerably lengthier Fantasia d3, in its turn, presents a more complex structure. This work, also tripartite, is based on a “hidden” program with a progressive development from polyphony to monody, whereby the upper voice increasingly predominates.

The piece begins with a long canonic introduction (mm. 1–79) in three parts, then in four, in which various motifs are elaborated.

Although the parts are treated with equal importance, the soprano, which takes the thematic lead, already plays the role of a “primus inter pares.” In the middle section (mm. 80–173), the canonic principle is reduced to echoes for the right hand; the two accompanying parts in the left hand remain broadly polyphonic.

The echo section, which is articulated into five segments, is

24 framed by an imitative introduction (mm. 80–89) and a fugato as “postludium” (mm. 157–173). It is not until the finis (mm.

174–221) that the left hand is given accompanying chords while the upper voice is entrusted with a long solo without two-manual echoes (but with sporadic octave echoes).

The presumably earliest example of a fantasia with the octaveecho technique is the Fantasia C3, which was transmitted anonymously in LyB3. The attribution to Sweelinck was first made

by Max Seiffert. Though it was later criticized, upon closer examination it proved to be right. The piece, whose stylistic characteristics point unequivocally to Sweelinck, comfortably fits into the master’s keyboard œuvre.13 Moreover, it represents a kind of preliminary study to Sweelinck’s masterpiece in this genre, the Fantasia C1. This expansive work in seven sections offers a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of canonic, toccata-style antiphonal elements with solo sections for both hands. Sweelinck uses most of the motifs and figuration models already found in the Fantasia C3. It is fascinating to see how the composer enriches this material, modifies it and, above all, expands it. The piece is nothing less than an unparalleled “tour de force.”

Other compositional accents mark two further octave-echo pieces

by Sweelinck, whose forms also take their cues from the Fantasia C3. The first, Fantasia a3, was transmitted singly in the collections of Berlin Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster (GK). The work boasts a motivic subtlety which, compounded with the use of the highranging ninth mode and of all the above-mentioned elements including a clear-cut tripartite form, elevates it to the rank of one of the most concentrated of all (echo) works. In the second piece,

the Fantasia C2, the echo technique recedes into the background in favor of richly varied canonic and imitative sections. It begins with an imitative section based on a jauntily paced theme.

The “Genuine” Monothematic Fantasias Both in quantity and size, the most significant group of fantasias is that of the monothematic works, the four-part pieces based on one single subject and incorporating the principle of throughimitation. They embody a further dimension of Sweelinck’s “humanistic” compositional process and his often-encountered preference for the variation principle. Most, if not all, of the themes elaborated here are based on pre-existing soggetti. The focus is less on the originality of the theme than on its artistic elaboration. The composer is able to demonstrate his inventiveness more effectively with a familiar theme. An example is the theme of the Fantasia G1, which was also treated by Sweelinck’s Portuguese contemporary Manual Rodrigues Coelho (c. 1555– c. 1635).14 It is rather unlikely, however, that they were aware of each other’s work; it is more probable that this subject was circulating among Europe’s organists.

The Fantasia G1, which is found solely in LyA1, comes perhaps the closest to the ideal of a Sweelinck fantasia without any strongly pronounced thematic or compositional characteristics (including the question of the instrumental medium; see p. 212). For this reason, we shall examine it here more closely on the basis of a schematic overview:

The work is in the eighth mode, in which the “dominant” is on the fourth instead of the fifth degree. Cadences on the first degree separate the work into three distinct sections, whereby the exordium exposes the theme in its original form and in mostly vocally inspired polyphony predominantly in quarter-note movement. Notable in the subject and its countersubject are the three fundamental elements that are set off against one another in an almost archetypal manner: a triadic structure (mm. 1–3), a chromatic progression (mm. 3–5) and a diatonic countersubject.

This constellation and its combination supply the material for the fantasia and constitute at the same time the basis for its remarkable melodic richness. In the medium, the movement is accelerated through eighth notes, and sometimes sixteenth notes as well. Here the theme (still in normal proportion at first, later in augmentation) is increasingly perceived as a kind of cantus firmus. The medium, which, as usual, is by far the longest section of the forma, thus unites both elements of the variation technique as well as a wide-spanning “development,” whereby the countersubjects interacting with the theme weave a widely ramified network of motivic and rhythmic relationships. In the finis, the principal theme itself is further elaborated: it appears in diminution in dense stretti, treated in an ostinato manner and, finally, returns in its original form as a coda that forcefully confirms the close. The three sections of the Fantasia G1 stand

in a proportion of more or less 3:5:2. Independently of this (and this seems typical for Sweelinck), there is a clear distinction between the original form of the theme and its proportion forms exactly in the middle of the work (mm. 131–132), which is underscored by a clear-cut cadence on the fourth degree.

The Fantasia G1, which occupies a central position within the fantasia corpus, represents a formal model that is clearly recognizable in the other monothematic fantasias as well – albeit with certain divergences. This is why the other works of this group are only briefly touched upon here. The mighty Fantasia a1 is particularly noteworthy because of the B-A-C-H motif that was later to become so famous. The theme apparently did not originate with Sweelinck himself, but is already found in a fantasia of 1594 by the Antwerp-born lutenist Gregorius Huwet (Huet).15 The particular distinction of this work as one of Sweelinck’s earliest fantasias clearly emerges in prevailingly retrospective traits such as the important role of the voice pairing technique, a relatively strict adherence to the theme, the use of the Phrygian mode (which was already then considered as quite archaic), and a not yet quite thoroughly developed keyboard polyphony. Although Sweelinck’s handwriting is already clearly recognizable, the work unmistakably throws a bridge to the imitative keyboard tradition of c. 1600 (Luython, Byrd, Philips, Andrea Gabrieli, etc.).16

25 This also broadly applies to the Fantasia F2, another anonymous piece from the tablature LyB2. Just as with the ostinato Fantasia a2, which is also found in the same source, Sweelinck’s authorship of the Fantasia F2 is all but certain. This piece also has a largely songful theme articulated into two sections. The work itself, at 167 measures relatively short, boasts a sharp division into three sections and features all the customary qualities such as formal equilibrium, thematic development, lively rhythms and a dazzling treatment of counterpoint. Due to the importance of the ‘pentachord’ in the first half of the theme as well as a number of other details, the work can be seen as a kind of preliminary study to the Hexachord Fantasia (F1). The Fantasia Ut re mi fa sol la, another high point in Sweelinck’s œuvre, is part of a cycle of keyboard works to which all the great international composers of the day contributed. An extremely neutral theme (six diatonic tones in a rising and falling pattern) proved to be the ideal choice to spark the creation of highly ambitious keyboard fantasias. Unlike many of his colleagues, Sweelinck did not write his longest or most virtuoso work on this subject, but focused on a compellingly logical concept and an unprecedented development of lushly prolific keyboard polyphony. He used a striking variant of his monothematic fantasia form, which, in the exordium, combines five entries of the hexachord (the principal subject) in augmentation with a version of the hexachord in diminution and enhanced with a thematic head. In the medium (mm. 70–183), three further entries in augmentation are followed by six appearances of the theme in normal proportion, enlivened by the increasing activity of the counter-voices, which attain an eighth-note tripling. Through an interlude (mm. 116–137), the change of proportion is coupled with the particularly intensive development of a three-tone counter-motif that begins exactly in the middle of the work.17 Finally, in the finis (mm. 184–227), the composer introduces a sixteenth-note movement and subjects the theme, now in diminution, to the usual techniques such as stretto and ostinato until it evolves into a “countersubject” of its own in eightfold and sixteenfold diminution. The fantasia thus undergoes a continuous process of intensification, whereby the hexachord evolves from a strict cantus firmus to a light stretto figure. Sweelinck thus achieves a remarkable synthesis of the two main strands of the hexachord tradition for keyboard, to wit, the cantus firmus style and the imitative style.18 According to the primary source of this piece, the manuscript Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (FM), Sweelinck wrote the work in 1612, during a period that also coincides with the climax of his compositional artistry in the vocal domain.

The Hexachord Fantasia’s counterpart is also presumed to date from the same period: the Fantasia Crommatica (d1), which is unquestionably equal in rank to its fellow piece. While the Hexachord Fantasia is based on a purely diatonic subject, the Fantasia d1 features a consistently chromatic theme. Since both soggetti consist of six notes, the chromatic tetrachord can most likely be seen as a radical, modernistic development of the hexachord with which the composer strove for new levels of expressiveness.19 By using the “normal” forma, Sweelinck effectively produced a unified work characterized by a multi-layered architectonic design and an unprecedented inner dynamic. The omnipresent chromaticism was subordinated to a closed tonal and rhythmic concept and a strict keyboard polyphony. With practically one stroke, Sweelinck propelled all the chromatic instrumental pieces attempted by his predecessors and contemporaries into the shadows.

The grand dimensions of the early Fantasia a1 were only reached again in two late works, the Fantasia d2 and the Ricercar a1, which bear a certain relationship through their common use of the technique of thematic development in fourfold augmentation that is found only here. In spite of its dimensions – it is Sweelinck’s longest surviving keyboard work – the Fantasia d2 is a rather “lyri-

cal” piece with themes of a predominantly vocal nature, transparent counterpoint, broadly fashioned episodes and singularly wellbalanced proportions. The only slightly shorter Ricercar a1 boasts considerably more intensive contrapuntal and thematic development which sets it in contrast to the Fantasia d2. The term “ricercar,” of which this is the only example in Sweelinck’s oeuvre (see below on the authenticity of the Ricercar d1–d3), is considered to be original, as the soggetto seems to be based on a ricercar theme

by Andrea Gabrieli. A further reason for the use of this particular designation may lie in the unparalleled scope of the compositional techniques involved, especially those borrowed from the art of variation. Moreover, the main source of the piece, Padua MS 1982 (Pa), also offers a very reliable text. There is no reason to doubt the title transmitted here and in Torino Ms. G7 (TorG7).

The Fantasia g1, Sweelinck’s monumental contribution to the genre of the ‘fuga contraria,’ stands alone in the transmitted corpus of fantasias. It is found solely in the FM. Here basically every thematic entry is answered by its inversion. Sweelinck bases the subject on the traditional models developed for this particular genre, but enhances it with further elements that give rise to a rich, four-part, strikingly songful soggetto. From the very beginning, the contrario principle is combined with stretto and canon. The result is one of Sweelinck’s most complex works, a true landmark in his contrapuntal art. One is here again reminded of Morley’s abovequoted description of the fantasia, in particular of the statement that “in this may more art be showne than in any other musicke.”

This is precisely what Sweelinck accomplished in this sumptuously elaborated fantasia.

With respect to the criteria determining the contents of the present volume, there are two points which deserve further elucidation: the inclusion of works transmitted anonymously or under another name as well as of genre-specific works transmitted singly into the main body of the volume, and the relegation of pieces transmitted under Sweelinck’s name into an appendix containing doubtful works.

A few anonymously transmitted pieces that are attributable to Sweelinck with near total certainty take their place seamlessly within the composer’s œuvre and its evolution. This pertains above all to the three anonymous fantasias from the LyB tablatures (C3, F2 and a2), which for this reason were included in the main section of the volume and discussed above. The same applies to the two ostinato fantasias (C4 and G4) linked also to John Bull. See above for further observations on the issue of authenticity of these pieces.

Upon closer examination of its transmission, a work heretofore edited as “Praeludium” turns out to be a fantasia: the Fantasia F3, a concentrated study in sequences and suspension techniques on the basis of several simple motifs in a strict four-part style.

Although there is no counterpart to this piece in Sweelinck’s œuvre, the work – and especially its idiomatic keyboard polyphony – seems typical of the master. Moreover, the work also lays claim to a reliable transmission, since it is contained both in LyB2 (anonymously) as well as in TorG6 (with attribution).

There is also a simplified version under Sweelinck’s name in LyB3, but it can hardly have been written by Sweelinck himself, as nothing less than the fluidity and rhythmic vitality of his keyboard style were eliminated here. This pedaliter arrangement probably stems from one of the Düben brothers. It was included here in the Appendix (No. 25).

Another singular case is the Fantasia g3 from the late and peripheral source St. Petersburg Ms. QN 204 (PB). Nevertheless, the simple bicinium is elaborated in a contrapuntally neat

26 manner and consists essentially of a chain of traditional canonic improvisation models20 that recur in many of his works as thematic facets. This makes Sweelinck’s authorship plausible, which is why the piece was also included in the main corpus of this volume.

The late tablature source Berlin Mus. Ms. AmB 340 (AmB) contains several fantasias (d1–d4) as well as the Toccata d2 in a heavily distorted and fragmented form. Moreover, it contains a unique “Capriccio J.P.,” which was reproduced here (Appendix, No. 26) solely because of its correspondence to the authenticated Sweelinck fragments. Here, too, one cannot exclude textual corruptions; however, it is still rather improbable that Sweelinck is the author of the chromatic piece.21 Already the concurrence of rising and falling chromaticism (which both remain distinct in his secured œuvre) is untypical of Sweelinck. The counterpoint and keyboard texture of this “Capriccio” – a term that is found nowhere else in the Sweelinck corpus – are somewhat confusing.

The piece seems to be composed without a concept.

The authenticity of a group of six singly transmitted works from the Turin tablatures, which were first edited by Alfons Annegarn after this source was discovered in the 1950s,22 has repeatedly been doubted. When examining this problematic group more carefully, one comes to the conclusion that the three fantasias (C5, d5 and G3) in TorG6 must be clearly differentiated from the three ricercari (d1–d3) in TorG7.23 The latter pieces were only included here (Appendix, Nos. 27–29) because they are ascribed to Sweelinck in the otherwise reliable Turin tablatures. Nevertheless, there are hardly any stylistic connections to Sweelinck. The canzona-like Ricercar d1 (the most interesting piece of this trio) as well as the toccata-like Ricercari d2 and d3 bear no relation to the canzona sections of his large toccatas, or even to the toccata œuvre as a whole; instead, they point to a Venetian or South-German origin.

In contrast, the three fantasias from TorG6 (one of them no doubt erroneously designated as “Fuga”) bear traits that are typical of Sweelinck. They are also contrapuntally refined, even though they are still very far removed from his mature, virtuoso keyboard style. It would seem to document an otherwise not tangible early stage of Sweelinck’s keyboard music or, to be more precise, of his monothematic fantasia type.
