Now in its 30th year, the International Snow Sculpture Championships presented by Toyta are bringing together 16 teams representing 12 countries from around the world to present intricate works of snow

art. Four-person teams will carve 20-ton, 12-foot-tall blocks of snow without the use of power tools, internal support structures, or colorants – just the ingenuity of the sculptors and a medium that lends itself, if only temporarily, to the persuasion of hand tools.

OUR DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS From forming the blocks to hosting teams, there’s no way we would have made it to our 30th year without our dedicated volunteers!

VOLUNTEERS FORM THE 20-TON BLOCKS Without the dedication of Jerry Drake of Breckenridge Crane none of this would be possible. Jerry and Breckenridge Crane have donated their time, equipment and expertise to form the blocks for the past 30 years of the International Snow Sculpture Championships presented by Toyota. While Jerry sold the business this year, he convinced the new owner to continue his tradition of providing equipment and manpower to create

the 12 ft, 20-ton blocks of snow. If you’re looking, you’ll still be able to find Jerry this year as he flew in to volunteer as block building manager. Breckenridge Crane, isn't the only ones who have had a hand, or should we say foot, in the block formation. For 30 years, businesses, clubs and individual volunteers have spent hours boot stomping snow to make sure the blocks are perfectly compact for our sculptors.

TEAM HOSTS While our lodging sponsors graciously donate comfy digs for our teams, there’s an entire group of host volunteers that make sure our international teams are as comfortable and as taken care of as possible during their stay. Volunteer hosts do everything from carpooling the teams to dinners donated by our

restaurant sponsors, to picking up forgotten essentials and organizing activities for their teams. Many of our volunteer hosts have assisted with the event for years or even decades and have developed close friendships with our international competitors. A great big thank you to each and every volunteer!

We would like to give a very special shout out to one of our hosts who has been involved with International Snow Sculpture Championships presented by Toyota since the very beginning, yes for 30 years straight, Jerry Stein. Jerry has hosted teams from all over the world and is often called upon as a "guide' for other hosts. He is fun, friendly, dedicated, and truly enjoys the time he spends with his teams. ISSC BY NIGHT There’s no better time to view the snow sculptures than at night. Watch as the completed masterpieces are illuminated with color, and be sure not to miss the debut of Snow Glow, an innovative  light and snow art installation celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the International Snow Sculpture Championships, presented by Toyota.

A LOOK BACK: SNOWMEN ON STEROIDS

First come the giant blocks of snow. When the 12-foot-tall, 20-ton giants appear in Tiger Dredge Lot just outside of the Breckenridge Riverwalk Center, they look like a strange, snowy Stonehenge. Then the snow carvers arrive with their tools and get to work. Over the next five days, the blocks transform, growing appendages, caverns, textures and developing depth. The teams work through the night, fighting the evening chill and long hours in order to make the deadline my morning of the fifth day.

This is the International Snow Sculpture Championships, a competition with global pull that takes place each winter in Breckenridge. This year, the event celebrates an important anniversary — 30 years of artistic creation, fierce competition and international acclaim.

SNOWSCULPTING IS LIFE Rob Neyland, Event Founder Every year, sometime in mid-winter, Rob Neyland’s mind is taken over by his alter ego, his evil twin, Carvin’ Marvin — Marvin calls the shots, and Marvin is smitten with whittling away at piles of white gold.

“Oh my god, he is totally focused and pushes aside and makes a complete mess of the rest of my life because he figures the snow sculpture is the most important, so I have to stuff him kicking and screaming back into the closet after each competition,” Neyland said about his alter ego.

HOW ULLR FEST STARTED IT ALL Neyland has been feeding Marvin’s obsession with sculpting snow in Breckenridge since 1980, when the championships were still a noname event, a sidebar to the town’s annual Ullr Fest.

“The whole thing came from a coin toss from Ullr Fest in 1980,” Neyland said. “We flipped a coin to decide if we’d do a snow sculpture, which we’d never done before, or do a float for the Ullr Parade. It came up heads, so we did a snow sculpture.”

continued to compete in the small, local competition, winning back-toback awards with different pieces.

“We won quite a few years in a row,” he said. “Then one day in 1985, a gentleman came along while we were working on our piece out in front of what is now Ember and he said, ‘Hey, you guys are pretty good.

Have you ever thought about going to the nationals?’ And we said, ‘Holy crap — there are nationals?

That, then and there, was when we were set on the course of: We need to elevate this art form for Breckenridge to make Breckenridge become known for this art form.”

EARLY WINS & LOSES Bringing an international-level snow sculpture competition to Breckenridge was no small task. In order to drum up support, Neyland and his team — dubbed Team Breck — spent four or five years establishing Breckenridge as a name associated with world-class snow sculpting.

The piece Team Breck constructed in 1987 for the newly sanctioned Colorado State Championships was titled “Earthlings” and depicted a woman swimming with a dolphin. A similar piece was constructed in 1988 at the U.S. National Championships, but with temperatures in Milwaukee hovering around freezing, the snow collapsed 20 minutes before the judging deadline.

“That was a crushing blow, I have to say, because we were in a deadon lock to win the nationals with that piece,” Neyland said. “We dragged our sorry butts on back to Breckenridge and said next year we’re going to go back.”

The following year, in 1989, Team Breck again won the Colorado event and returned to nationals with a new sculpture concept titled “The Frozen Moment,” featuring a watch with exposed gears. The piece won a gold medal and the artists’ choice award, sending the local sculptors to the Carnaval de Québec, one

of the largest and oldest snow art festivals in the world.

COMPETING INTERNATIONALLY Word of the team from the little town in the Colorado Rockies spread, bolstered in the following years by gold-medal wins at the Sapporo Snow Festival in Japan and the world championships in Finland and a silver medal at the world championships in Moscow.

“All the while, we’re wearing Breckenridge from head to toe and telling everyone that we’re putting together a competition in Breckenridge and y’all need to come so we can whip up on you in Breckenridge,” he said. “We were out to establish Breckenridge as a liable venue for an international competition. We were on the march to collect names and numbers to build a database.”

BRINGING THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION HOME After years of compiling resources and contacts, Team Breck was ready to bring the international competition home. They put together a slide show of their work and presented it to “every organization that would sit still for it,” Neyland said, from realtors and lodging properties to the town council.

All the hard work paid off in 1991, when Breckenridge hosted its first International Snow Sculpture Championships.

Though the sculptures are selfsupported, it still takes an entire community to hold them up. The gigantic event wouldn’t have gotten off the ground without the initial help and continued support from the people of Breckenridge, Neyland said.

“It is a tremendous tribute to this community that everyone steps up to do that — the ski area gave us the snow, the town gave us the machinery and the machine time, the concrete company gave us the concrete forms, the crane people gave us the cranes, the lodging people and restaurants all weighed in,” Neyland said.

The International Snow Sculpture Championships have become imprinted on the identity of Breckenridge, which was precisely the goal from the very beginning.

“You can’t see any story or brochure or electronic imagery about Breckenridge in any venue in the world that does not include some sort of image of the snow sculpture that happens in Breckenridge every year. It’s become indelibly associated with Breckenridge, and I think that’s just splendid,” Neyland said.

TEAM SCULPTURES Teams have been invited to compete from twelve countries including Argentina, China, Ecuador, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Mexico, Mongolia, Switzerland, Turkey and the USA. The United States teams invited include Alaska, Breckenridge, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Vermont.

Winners receive no cash prizes; the artists instead revel in the reward of hard work, forged friendships, freedom of artistic expression and the satisfaction of long hours of preparation that lead to the event.

The ISSC Award Ceremony takes place at 6:00pm on Friday, January 24 at the Riverwalk Center and is free and open to the public.

MEET THE PANEL OF JUDGES FOR 2020 NICOLE DIAL-KAY

Nicole earned her Master of Arts degree in Art History from the University of Colorado Boulder, Master of Arts degree in Museum Studies from the University of Missouri, and Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Southern Illinois University. She has served as the Senior Director of Arts + Programming at Breckenridge Creative Arts from 20172020 where she manages exhibitions, festivals, special events, public art initiatives and placemaking projects. Her experience includes: exhibitions, festivals, and education at Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art; exhibitions and programming at CU Art Museum; public program design for the Denver Art Museum; a government-sponsored residency at Pratt Museum in Homer, Alaska; education at the Saint Louis Art Museum; and multiple roles in the Saint Louis contemporary art world. Nicole will join Harwood Museum of Art in Taos, New Mexico as Curator of Exhibitions + Collections in February 2020.

SARAH KATE BAIE

Sarah Kate Baie is the Director of Programming at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. Her work includes celebrating and supporting artists and musicians from around the world to create programs, performances, and events that recognize the art and culture of our time. She an educator with the Denver Art Museum and was one of four founding staff members at The Laboratory of Art and Ideas at Belmar. She holds a master's degree from the Bank Street College in New York City, and is able to drive both a manual transmission automobile and a motorcycle, but only if the motorcycle in question is actually a scooter.

RON SHELTON

Ron brings a working knowledge of snow art to the jury.

His keen sense for balance, expression and composition is uniquely a product of his involvement with snow sculpture and his ongoing passion for photography. Ron’s understanding of the “degree of difficulty” involved with each sculpture in the competition is particularly valuable to the Judges Panel as sculpting snow is completely unique when it comes to the engineering of the piece.

His snow sculpture resume includes works at the National Championships on Milwaukee WI, the Carnival d` Quebec in Canada, the Snow Sculpture World Championships in Moscow and Finland and over 20 years of competing as a founding member of Team Breckenridge in the International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge.

This is Ron’s 4th year on the Judges Panel. He has been a full-time resident of Breckenridge since 1978, is a father, soon to be a grandfather, a husband and a Realtor. His passions include skiing in the winter and traveling and spending time with his horses in the summer.

TINA ROSSI AND ALEX KENDALL

Tina Rossi and Alex Kendall purchased the landmark Breckenridge Gallery in 2017. After extensive renovation and cultural redefinition via an infusion of new artists and a personal touch offering frequent meet the artists social events, the gallery has become a social hub to many in the Breckenridge community interested in the arts.

KEITH MARTIN

As owners and curators of the Breckenridge Gallery, Tina and Alex have a discerning eye for the pulse of the artistic community informed by 10 years in the gallery business on Tina’s end and Alex’s studies at the Art Institute of Colorado as well as her long experience working as a professional photographer.

As a chef, engineer and artist, he has accomplished many things in his 46 years, and now he has a successful company traveling and creating ice and snow masterpieces for events and festivals all over the country. Being an international artist, it has given him the opportunity to experience several competitions and many diverse styles of artists. He has a great understanding for the medium and recognizes how difficult it can be working in different conditions.

Tina and Alex reside in Breckenridge, CO and enjoy skiing, mountain biking, renovating retro Airstream trailers and traveling around in them to surfing hotspots throughout the west, all the while orchestrating the design/build of a second home in Buena Vista, CO. In the summer, their home flower display rivals the art they carry within the gallery.

Keith Martin, a renowned carver that has been working with snow and ice art for well over 20 years now. He has competed in international snow and ice competitions all over the world and has been awarded several medals for his accomplishments with his team.

This knowledge and experience makes him an excellent addition to the judging team and will bring with it extra insight to the art form as well as its challenges.

We invite you to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Breckenridge International Snow Sculpture Championships with an innovative journey on the forefront of art. At the top of every hour and half hour, a team of visual light designers will turn bring a 30-foot intricate snow sculpture to life using state of the art projection mapping. The melding of the two art forms create an innovative display that allows the artists to tell their story through light and sound using state-of-the art pinpoint mapping technology. The effect creates a 2D animation that will look 3D to the naked eye.

Time: Snow Glow runs every half hour from 4:30 – 9:45pm from January 24 - 29. *On January 29 the last show will start at 6:30pm.

WHERE DOES THE SNOW COME FROM? Breckenridge Ski Resort makes the snow and the Town of Breckenridge Public Works Department hauls it to the event site with dump trucks. With each of the 16 starting blocks weighing in at approximately 20 tons each, that’s roughly 640,000 pounds of snow!

HOW ARE THE SNOW BLOCKS FORMED? Using front-end loaders and a huge blower, snow is transferred from the dump trucks into wooden molds. Five to ten volunteers, “snow stompers,” climb into the block and stomp the snow to help pack it down. The process is repeated until the mold is full and packed into a sculptable block.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SCULPTURES WHEN THE EVENT IS OVER? After the January 24th awards ceremony, sculptures are scheduled to remain on display through January 29yh and are taken down at 7:00 p.m.

HOW BIG ARE THE SNOW SCULPTURES? The blocks measure 10 feet wide, 10 feet long and 12 feet high before artists take to the snow with hand tools. Finished pieces tower over the crowds.

HOW ARE THE TEAMS CHOSEN? The Snow Sculpture Organizing Committee sends 250 invitations in June and receives artist submissions in August. A selection committee reviews the entries and decides which teams to invite. Selected teams provide their own transportation to Denver and are supported by a travel stipend. The Organizing Committee, combined with the help of many local sponsors, take care of artists meals, transportation from DIA, and lodging in Breckenridge.

WHAT DO THE TEAMS WIN? There are no cash prizes; artists compete only for glory. The first, second, and third place winners each receive a medallion, a trophy, and a ribbon. Awards are also presented to the winners of the People’s Choice and Artists’ Choice.

ARE DOGS ALLOWED? The International Snow Sculpture Championships are a pet-friendly event, however please be aware that there will be cannons, light shows, crowds and can get very cold. Please keep pets on a leash and away from the snow sculptures. Dogs are not allowed in The FirstBank Warming Hut Exhibit.
