Gear Up receives grant By: Allen Fletcher

As part of a recent $20,000 grant given to Gear Up, 18 Macbook Pro laptops were purchased for the new JCS college and career readiness course.

Stipulations of the grant were that the devices must be mobile and used for the incorporation of technology in the classroom.

In addition to the computers, a mobility Superintendent Kyle Lively lends a cart was purchased hand with the new Macbooks to District to safely store the Technology Coordinator Jeff Coots. devices.

As a part of the college and career readiness content, they will be used for Individual Leaning Plan (ILP) access as well as ACT prep and WINS software.

They are expected to be in operation in classrooms by August 19th.

These devices will enhance the learning experience through technology and integrating various types of software.

Gear Up will take advantage of these useful tools in preparing students for college.

A special thank you go goes to District Technology Coordinator Jeff Coots for setting up the laptops.

JCS chemistry class conducts first lab of the year By: Rachael Durham

On Tuesday, August 13th, Mr. Coots’ high school chemistry class conducted their first lab of the school year.

The purpose of this lab was to gain practice in developing observation skills and also make inferences from these observations.

Students were grouped in pairs and received two petri dishes, one filled with water and the other filled with milk.

The students then had to add Heather Thompson vegetable oil into the petri dish with water, and then put four & Olivia Moore drops of food coloring into the dish filled with milk.

The lab then required the students to dip a toothpick into dishwashing liquid and place the toothpick into the petri dishes and record their observations. One observation from student Andrew Warren stated, “The vegetable oil and food coloring seemed to react to the dishwashing liquid and moved away from the toothpick, near the edge of the dish.” The students also had to write a lab report afterwards detailing the results they collected.

Turner receives KY Dataseam Scholarship at MSU By: Allen Fletcher

Peyton Turner, graduate of Jackson High School this past May, has received the Kentucky Dataseam Scholarship at Morehead State University.

Only five awards are presented annually, and they provide full tuition for four years.

To be considered for selection, students must be admitted to MSU as an incoming freshman and declare a program of study in a science-related field, pre-engineering, or education in the STEM-related discipline.

Turner has stated that her major is biomedical science with a specialty in pre-dentistry. So long as she is a Dataseam Scholar, she must show prominent steps toward her degree and get involved in stem cell research. This is a highly competitive scholarship, and everyone at JCS congratulate Peyton on her achievement and wish her the best of luck at MSU!

Gear Up begins new year By: Allen Fletcher

As Jackson City is beginning another school year, the Gear Up program is implementing several changes.

Gear Up is a federal grant aimed at increasing student achievement as well as college and career readiness.

JCS also has a new Gear Up Academic Specialist following the res-

ignation of Wallace Bates.

The new academic specialist that will be coordinating the Gear Up program this year is Mrs. Missy Henson-Little, former middle school English teacher at JCS. As part of her new position, she will be teaching a college and career readiness course (CCR) for 9th grade. It will be credited as an elective. She will also be teaching a Gear Up LAMP course for elementary and middle school.

In these classes, study skills and test prep software will be used to prepare students for college, including Study Island, MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing and a new software called Method Test Prep.

This software is a resource for ACT prep, and can be used by all students preparing for the ACT. In addition to this new classroom curriculum, Gear Up is also beginning other activities to boost student achievement. he student tutor program began the week of August 26th. High school students were interviewed and selected for the program.

They will tutor elementary and middle school students in the areas of math, science, and English throughout the day.

In addition, faculty members will also offer tutoring both during the day and after school in collaboration with the 21st Century program.

A complete tutoring schedule can be found at the school and on the school website. A mentoring program will also be offered to 8th and 9th graders alongside school personnel as well as community members interested in serving as mentors.

In addition, community service projects with an emphasis on leadership will be conducted through the Gear Up program.

Several college visits and field trips are also being planned for the year.

Everyone at JCS wishes the Gear Up program and its personnel the best this year as they strive to increase academic success.

Kindergarten Korner By: TeNeil Mullins

Mrs. Hollan’s kindergarten class has been working really hard with the alphabet.

Last week they learned all about the letter “T.” The class invited their teddy bear friends to the classroom as well.

With their teddy bears, they learned how to make bar graphs by grouping the bears into color and size.

Friday, Mrs. Hollan’s class took their first field trip to the Breathitt County Public Library for story time and a tea party.

Mrs. Hollan also taught her students about using their manners.

She taught them when and how to use “please” and “thank you” and “when in doubt, pinky out.”

Mrs. Hollan’s kindergarten class really enjoyed learning all about the letter “T” and manners!

Gillum attends Governor’s Scholars Program By: Brent Watts

Kelli Gillum attended the prestigious Governor’s Scholar Program over the summer.

Her session took place at Morehead State University from June 16th to July 20th.

Spanning a total of five weeks and encompassing nearly 1,000, each individual was assigned a focus area and was encouraged to treat the program as if it were actually their college experience.

Kelli’s focus area was international relations, and her broader general studies class was based Kelli Gillum on community service.

There were approximately 350 students at her session, and all participated in various clubs and activities in which they all got to know each other very well.

Kelli participated in the youth group, community service club, and Disney Movie Club.

Kelli Gillum said, “I adored it. I made many interesting friends and I plan on staying in contact with them.”

Everyone at JCS congratulates Kelli on this accomplishment and commends her on her excellent representation of the school.

Brent Watts, after a lengthy interview and application process, was accepted into the Robinson Scholars Program.

This program provides full tuition to the University of Kentucky through the use of coal severance money.

This is what enabled him to go to the Robinson Scholars Camp over the summer.

Brent experienced a hyperrealistic college schedule.

He was enrolled in the camp’s College of Arts and Sciences.

They also did several fun activities as a group from laser tag to roller-skating and a surprise trip at the end of the week.

Watts said, “I really enjoyed this camp. I learned a lot and made many great friends that I look forward to sharing my college experience with.”

JHS Chemist of the Week By: Andrew Warren

Recently, Mrs. Arrowood’s 2nd grade class began studying living things in science.

With the lesson, students were sent out on two different treasure hunts to search for various items.

On their first treasure hunt, the students searched for different parts of plants, such as stems, leaves, roots, and the bud of the flower.

The students then presented their findings to the class, later getting to keep them for themselves.

On their second treasure hunt, the students searched for items to identify pine and oak trees.

These students had to bring in a leaf and pinecone from a pine tree and an oak leaf and acorn from an oak tree to present to the class.

The students had a wonderful time learning all about these neat plants!

Mrs. Sarah Trent, previously a 1st grade teacher at JCS, switched positions this year and is now the library/media specialist.

Her goal for the school year is to get students of all ages excited about reading.

Last Thursday, she had magician Travis Combs kick off her new plans with a magic show for all students in honor of the new library program.

In contrast to last year’s library program, she plans on offering different incentives for students participating in the Accelerated Reader (AR) Program.

Michael Maggard has been recognized as Chemist of the Week for Mr. Coots’ JHS chemistry class.

Michael is an excellent student and strives for perfection in class.

Michael was asked what he wants to accomplish from his chemistry class and answered, “I want to learn more about chemistry, because not only does it teach us about what makes up the universe, but it also teaches us about what makes us up as human beings.”

Everyone at JHS wishes Michael the best of luck and congratulates him on his recognition as Chemist of the Week!

Last week, Mrs. Hollan’s kindergarten class worked with the letter “M.” With this, her students learned the sound of the letter and also completed several activities.

The kindergarteners made monkey puppets and maracas.

Mrs. Hollan also took her students to the Mexican restaurant!

Her students learned a few Spanish words so they could try to order their food in Spanish.

Along with the Mexican theme, Mrs. Hollan also let her students make a Mexican flag and taught them how to locate places on a map.

Mrs. Hollan is very proud of her students for how well they have been participating in class!

Brittany Barnett has been recognized as Physicist of the Week for Mr. Coots’ physics class.

She is an excellent student and is very engaged in class.

Brittany was asked what she would like to accomplish out of physics and answered, “I would like to accomplish all of the challenging goals that we are supposed to reach by the end of the course. I will have to push myself to do my best.”

Senior Allen Fletcher competed in the 14th Region All “A” Classic at the Hazard Country Club on Friday, August 23rd.

In addition to the top team advancing to state, the top two individuals not on the winning team also advance to the All “A” state competition.

Fletcher was the top scoring individual not on the winning team, shooting a 39.

This will be Fletcher’s fifth appearance at state competition out of the past six years he has been a member of the golf team.

The All “A” state competition will be held in Somerset on September 7th.

The JCS Golf Team is coached by John Turner.

Rev. Clay Eugene Boomer, age 68, of Jackson passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, KY. He was the Pastor of the Positive Faith Church in Jackson and the son of the late Clay E. and Georgia Webb Boomer.

He is survived by two sons: Cornell E. Lewis (Shelly) and Clay Boomer IV all of Ohio; two brothers: Charles Boomer of California and Dennis Wright; one sister, Hollie Welch; and three grandchildren: Sandy Lewis, Lance Wimberly, and Mackenzie Lewis.

Funeral service was held Friday, August 23, 2013 at 3PM at the Watts Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Emmitt Campbell and Dana Strong officiating.

Burial followed in the Jackson Cemetery.

Judge To Decide Legality Of A County Ordinance

Honey Festival 2013 Has Begun

Our group visited the Creation Museum recently.

Julia Terry, head cook at the center, ordered this tempting dessert at Chedders where we had a late lunch. We teased Julia that she should serve that kind of dessert at the center. Actually it was a dessert intended to be shared. Behind Julia is Betty Farler and Carol Campbell.

A hearing date has been set for September 6, 2013 in Breathitt Circuit Court to decide the validity of an ordinance which was recently passed by the Fiscal Court in which the county judge will not sign due to wording being changed during the second reading.

In a document filed in Breathitt Circuit Court by County Attorney Brendon Miller, the fiscal court must make any desired changes to the administrative code during the month of June of each year per state law and did so by amending an ordinance relating to spending, use of county vehicles, cell phone usage, and the county road plan.

According the document, the magistrates met on June 20th and had the first reading of the desired changes to the code and held a second reading and adoption on June 28th.

County Judge Executive Harvey Jason Richardson said in a letter to Miller dated July 5, 2013 that he could not in clear conscious sign the ordinance. Richardson says in the letter that changes were made in the ordinance between the time frame of the first and second readings therefore the ordinance could be illegal.

Changes that were made in the second reading were as follows: *Purchasing by county judge- $2500.00 in the first reading changed to $500.00 in the second reading and adoption. *Compensation- the first reading read- Overtime must be approved in advance by the fiscal court, except in an emergency declared by the county judge. In the second reading “except in an emergency declared by the county judge” was omitted.

The new ordinance also contained new regulations including the parking of county owned vehicles after hours including the county judge’s vehicle and use of county equipment after hours by non-employees.

Miller said in the document there were two remedies to the situationeither seek an Attorney General’s opinion or a Declaratory Judgment from the Circuit Court.

Magistrates Tim Spencer, Roy Darrell Herald, Ray Moore, and Ellis Tincher say the ordinance was passed correctly but the County Judge says it was not and is not enforceable. Miller says there are similar past cases on file in the state where both the Magistrates and Judge are correct.

A hearing will be held on September 6th, 2013 in the Breathitt Circuit Courtroom where Judge Frank Allen Fletcher will decide the legality of the ordinance.

The 36th annual Breathitt County Honey Festival has begun.

The tent is in place and booths will open on Friday at 10:00AM. Food booths are scheduled to open at Noon.

Live entertainment will begin near City Hall on Friday at 5:30PM and will continue until midnight. On Saturday and Sunday, live entertainment will begin at noon and continue until midnight each evening.

Activities will be ongoing all weekend with the Honey Bowl at the Mike Holcomb Athletic Complex Friday at 7:30PM where the Breathitt County Bobcats will face Jackson County.

On Saturday, a Veteran’s Breakfast will be held at the Lodge Hall on Broadway at 8:00AM. Craft and food booths will open again on Saturday at 10:00AM followed by the parade at 11:00AM. with Doug Terry serving as Grand Marshall.

After the parade, clogging will be held at the main stage at noon followed by a kids fest at the Lester Smith Memorial Park on College Avenue with “honey” related games and prize giveaways such as a new bike, UK items, toys, and items from Game Stop. Frog and turtle races will also be held during the kids fest. A bass fishing tournament is scheduled to begin at 6:00PM at the Panbowl Lake Boat Dock.

On Sunday, craft booths will open at 10:00AM followed by food booths opening at 1:00PM. A cornhole tournament is scheduled to be held at Douthitt Park at 2:00PM. Live gospel music will be performed all afternoon followed by the Community Worship Service with Mark Driskill being the guest speaker.

Live music will continue until the last band takes the stage at 11:00PM. On Monday, the annual Honey Run/Walk will begin at LBJ at 8:00AM followed by a golf tournament at the Sugar Camp Golf Course at Noon.

The theme for this year’s festival is A Link To Our Past, A Bridge To Our Future.

The big event with the seniors last week was our trip to the Creation Museum in Northern Kentucky. There was a bunch of us-44 plus a driver. We were able to all travel together since we had a 55-passenger bus from Blue Grass Tours. We’ve taken several trips with Blue Grass Tours and have found them to provide dependable, courteous drivers. I think I can safely say we had a good day. Everybody who went had nothing but praise about the museum and our trip generally. The Creation Museum is a Biblical account of creation. There are many very life-like scenes depicting Biblical events including Adam and Eve, sacrifices, Abraham and Isaac. The Ark, beautiful animals, and ordinary families engaged in daily living events. In addition to the museum there are now other attractions such as the zip line, petting zoo, Botanical gardens, special effects theater, and dinosaur exhibit. We all had tickets to the Planetarium and enjoyed that 23-minute show very much. We reclined under the theater’s 30-foot domes as we watched highdefinition digital projectors illuminate spectacular aspects of our universe. After that fantastic experience we left the museum area and headed home. However, we had reservations at Chedders for a 3:00 P.M. meal. What a meal it was! Wonderful food! Great hospitality! A warm welcoming atmosphere! We have eaten at a lot of good restaurants in our travels, but that would rank among the top. Have a good week everyone.

‘School Lawsuit’From Front Page Commissioner Terry Holliday stripped the members of their duties which was illegal since a hearing was not held to remove them from their positions.

Langley then asked the court to dismiss the case saying the court did not have jurisdiction which Fletcher denied saying the court did have jurisdiction.

Pillersdorf asked that the board members be restored to their positions and that the state be ordered to vacate the Breathitt Co. School System.

Langley them discussed the fact that the state did not silence the board, they ultimately silenced themselves when they would not allow community members to voice their thoughts and concerns at the May 28th meeting by adjourning the meeting.

Judge Fletcher then expressed concern over the stern letter sent by Mr. Holliday to the board members. Fletcher asked both attorneys how is what the board members did at the meeting any different than what lawmakers do in Washington or Frankfort? “If a lawmaker disagrees and refuses to vote, is it appropriate for the governor or the president to send a letter to them like Holliday did,” asked Fletcher.”

Langley then replied that there had not been any stripping of authority because the board members had no authority anyway after the state takeover. Judge Fletcher then asked if the board members had no authority then why would Holliday send a letter to the board members in such a manner?

Fletcher then told both sides they had the responsibility to manage the school district the best they could for the community and the children but both parties were stubborn. The judge also said he was furious after reading the letter sent by Holliday. “By writing that letter, he (Holliday) treated the Breathitt Co. School Board like first graders. The letter speaks for itself. When you put something in writing, it speaks for itself,” said Fletcher.

Fletcher said he respected the government even though they make some decisions he didn’t like but the last thing we needed in our area was someone coming in talking to us like we are first graders.

After the one hour hearing, Fletcher made a ruling in the case.

He said in his ruling “Fairce O Woods has the answer in this case”.

Fletcher said when Woods was coach at Breathitt County, two months before the district and regional tournament, he would have the members of the team come over to his house to eat, spend the night and get to know each other. By getting to know each other, they played and worked better together said Fletcher.

“I order all of you to go on a retreat with each other. I want you to communicate and get to know each other. It sounds elementary but it worked for Fairce Woods,” said Fletcher.

He also said he was giving homework to those involved in the case. He recommended they read several books one of which is entitled How To Win Friends and Influence People.

Fletcher then had a message for Hammond’s. “There’s more to this job than coming here and making changes, you have to get to know our people. You have to listen and be open-minded. People feel like you’re forcing things down their throats,” said Fletcher.

Fletcher then said he would not issue a ruling on the state’s status in the school system or the reappointment of the board until the parties try to work things out. He did order however that the retreat take place within the month at a state park and that both sides return to court on October 11th to report the status of the meeting.

Diabetic Foot and Related Complications

Jackson Foot and Ankle Clinic/ Kentucky River Medical Center According to the State of Kentucky on the Kentucky web site at the Cabinet for Health and Family Services that diabetes is one of the most common and serious chronic diseases in the United States. About 28.8 million Americans, about 7% of the population, have diabetes; 6.2 million of whom who do not know they have the disease. The web site has quoted that based on estimate, approximately 376 thousand adult Kentuckians [about 12% or 1 in 8] have diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes. We all know diabetes affects part of the body, but as a podiatrist, I see and treat with diabetic patient with the foot and ankle-related problems on daily basis. So hopefully through this article, I can help you understand about diabetic-foot care and discuss about serious foot and ankle complications related to diabetes.

Diabetes affects the foot in 2 ways: 1. through the circulation.

Consider the sugars that you eat when they are broken down by the body as little free particles that travel in your bloodstream. These little sugar particles stay with your blood and travel everywhere to the nerves, tendons, bones and your heart. For people who have chronic diabetes, the sugar will stay and stick to those different parts of the body. The people who have the sugar problem are known to cause the poor circulation in both small vessels as well as the big vessels. With the characteristic on the various invasive vascular studies, further procedure or invasive study will be needed to take care of the problem. Beware of poor circulation; cramping in the foot and the leg, skin that stays cold and has a decreased amount of hair growth, or looks atrophic, looks old and shiny in appearance.

All those are signs and symptoms of a poor circulation in a diabetic patient.

2. Diabetes causes nerve damage to the foot and ankle that is known as Diabetic Neuropathy.

The nerves control our sensation, muscle movement, and it also controls our heartbeat and breathing. For people to have nerve damage secondary to diabetes [which is also known as Diabetic Neuropathy], those patients demonstrate clinical symptoms of numbness; tingling; burning; foot and ankle are going to sleep; in the later stage in a much more severe degree of neuropathy, patients complain of losing balance, unable to use the muscle of the leg, their muscles get weak, fatigue and the other parts of the body can also experience autonomic neuropathy such as gastroparesis and neurogenic bladder. Sexual dysfunction is also reported in the literature associated with the patients in regards to diabetic neuropathy.

That is why the government has decided that taking care of the diabetic patient is a multidiscipline approach. It means that a diabetic patient needs to have a good internal medicine doctor; endocrinologist, eye doctor, a dentist and they need to have a podiatrist. The feet are very important part of your body. Without your feet you will not be able to walk, to ambulate and the diabetic patient is notoriously known to have foot-related complications. For the diabetic patient, the insurance will cover you to see the podiatrist every 2 to 3 months to get your feet checked and provide and needed care. The insurance company will also cover for you to get a pair of diabetic shoes with the custom-made inserts once a year.

Diabetic patients in general are not encouraged to cut their own nails or trim their calluses and definitely want to avoid and spa or pedicure places. Diabetic patients are encouraged to wear diabetic shoes to protect their feet. They are discouraged from soaking in warm water due to the fact that the nerve damage does not allow them to feel the warmth of the water. Diabetic patients are also discouraged from going barefoot.

Diabetic foot problems are one of the common leading causes for hospitalization for over 60 million people in the United States.

It accounts for expenditure of hundreds and millions of dollars annually. It has been estimated that nearly 15% of diabetic patients will develop serious foot problems at some point in time, which can potentially lead to losing their foot or leg or even their life.

The good news is that those problems can be prevented through regular podiatrist visits, patient education, daily foot inspections and proper foot care. When I did my training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas, I worked in the Texas Diabetic Institute and performed numerous amputations, treated many wounds and saw hundreds of diabetic patients. Those training allowed me to continue providing the best care for diabetic patients with all foot and ankle problems. Here in Jackson Foot and Ankle Clinic, we continue to provide the best care we can to those patients who have diabetes. We are located in Jackson but also see patients at Quantum Health Care in Hazard, KY on a weekly basis, and Primary Care Center in Hyden, KY once a month. Hopefully we will be able to serve the community one step at a time.

Jeff Clair signs with Lonesome Day Records

Lonesome Day Records is proud to announce that we have signed Jeff Clair.

No stranger to the bluegrass stage Jeff has toured with some of bluegrass music’s biggest acts such as Dave Evans & River Bend, Larry Sparks & The Lonesome Ramblers, Wendy Miller & Country Grass, and even appeared on stage with the great Dr. Ralph Stanley! In late 2012 Jeff decided it was time to step out on his own, assemble his new band “ Half Past Lonesome” and release his debut album “They Called Him Jesus”, a self released album that is still getting airplay around the world! For fifteen years now, Jeff Clair has volunteered his time and talent to showcase Bluegrass and Gospel music for thousands of Appalachian Service Project volunteers.

Appalachian

Service Project (ASP) is a volunteer organization that benefits low income families in Appalachia. The ASP volunteers come from various states and repair homes for those less fortunate in order to improve their living conditions. During a 7 week period a new set of 80-120 volunteers arrive in Breathitt County as well as other parts of Ap- palachia. Jeff says, “Appalachian Service Project provides a great service to the people in our region and they should be commended for it. Providing an educational concert for the volunteers is my way of thanking them for all they have done to help the people of Appala- chia. In addition to making lifelong friends and meeting thousands of people we have had the opportunity to present bluegrass and traditional

music to an audience that may have not heard this style of music otherwise.

Many of the volunteers come from hundreds of miles away and I’m glad we had the opportunity to introduce all of them to bluegrass music and bring in new fans for the music.” Randall Deaton, label owner, says; “I have known Jeff Clair since he was 14 years old. We both grew up in the same county in Eastern Kentucky. Jeff’s love for bluegrass music and his dedica- tion to using music to give back to his community are second to none. I look forward to helping Jeff take the next step in his music career.
