It is hard to believe that we are together again virtually, but I am so grateful that you have joined us to learn more about Samaritans’ lifesaving programs, how we have navigated the past year, and our plans for the future.

Today’s program theme is Forward Together. We chose this theme because we think of our work in helping to reduce the incidence of suicide as having a forward focus, providing hope.

This past year we strived to provide hope in many new and unexpected ways.

I have been absolutely amazed at how quickly we were able to shift our programs and services, which in turn created a more inclusive community with opportunities to reach an even wider audience. Within 2 weeks of lockdown, we were reaching more people than ever through Zoom meetings and remote workshops and had Helpline volunteers joining us from all over the country.

We can feel a sense of normalcy at our fingertips now as restrictions are lifted, and vaccinations are administered. We feel confident that we will move forward together; stronger, wiser and with the ability to support more people who are struggling. Your donations are truly more important than ever, enabling and ensuring the work of our staff and volunteers to help those in need.

On behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito and I would like to welcome you to the Samaritans Inc. Breakfast for Hope virtual event.

Established in Boston by Monica Dickens, Samaritans has provided lifesaving suicide prevention services throughout the Commonwealth for 47 years. Samaritans has followed the principles of befriending created by Samaritans in the United Kingdom, which has provided suicide prevention workshops to over 150,000 people and has additionally supported 15,000 suicide loss survivors in their grief journeys.

Samaritans has not only helped thousands of individuals struggling with suicide, but they have played an instrumental role in our communities by educating the public about suicide prevention. Through their emphasis on confidential and compassionate listening, Samaritans is committed to maintaining a safe, nonjudgmental environment in which all individuals are treated with dignity and respect.

Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito and I are proud of the work and commitment Samaritans has displayed throughout the years and are grateful for their service to our communities.

Congresswoman

Ayanna Pressley (MA-07)

Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley is an activist, a legislator, a survivor, and the first woman of color to be elected to Congress from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Throughout her career as a public servant, Congresswoman Pressley has fought to ensure that those closest to the pain are closest to the power - driving and informing policymaking. Throughout her first term in Congress, Congresswoman Pressley has been a champion for justice: reproductive justice, justice for immigrants, consumer justice, justice for ageing Americans, justice for workers, justice for survivors of sexual violence, and justice for the formerly and currently incarcerated.

Currently, Congresswoman Pressley serves on two powerful Congressional committees – the House Committee on Oversight and Reform and the House Committee on Financial Services– both of which have remained focused on legislatively addressing issues of care, concern, and consequence to the American people. Prior to being elected to Congress, she served on the Boston City Council for 8 years, and was the first woman of color elected to the council in its 100year history.

Kyle Elizabeth Freeman Anti-Shame Activist, The Company Keepers

I lost my amazing brother Jeff to suicide in 2007.

From that tragedy, I decided to dedicate my life to anti-shame activism by speaking up about the things we’re supposed to keep hidden. For me, that includes being open about living with depression with periodic suicidal ideation.

In 2019, in an effort to combat holiday depression, I decided to do an individual fundraiser for Samaritans.

I’m proud to share that I’ve helped raise $106,600 for suicide prevention.

My depression is connected to living with a handful of disabling chronic physical health conditions, that have intensified over the last five years and limited my life activities significantly. But I am far more than my health challenges. I’m a former hospice social worker turned eco interior redesigner, a writer, a photographer, a community-builder, a relentless problem-solver, a walker, and a nature-lover. But nothing makes me happier than DOGS and watching the sun sparkle on Silver Lake, New Hampshire.

Video Biographies Joe Cedrone Joe grew up in Newton MA, one of five children. He attended Johnson & Wales University in Providence RI and graduated in 1980, the year after his brother Richie died by suicide. Joe retired from the food industry after 45 years, much of it working in foodservice and retail food distribution. He began attending SafePlace meetings in 2018 and went through facilitator training in 2019. Joe has co-facilitated SafePlace meetings in Quincy, and currently co-facilitates Virtual SafePlace meetings. Prior to the pandemic Joe was to co-facilitate at the newest SafePlace meetings in Walpole. Joe and his wife Diane have two children and five grandchildren, whom they spoil every chance they get. When not volunteering or spoiling his grandchildren, Joe can be found fishing, bicycling, or kayaking.

Janice Dominguez Janice Dominguez began her volunteering journey with Samaritans in 2018 on the Helpline. Her time at Samaritans affirmed her passion for helping others and is what drove her to pursue her master’s degree in clinical mental health.

Her goal is to serve the black and brown community in educating, supporting and breaking trauma patterns.

Janice is a first generation American whose parents migrated here from the Dominican Republic. Janice grew up in Salem, MA and has lived in Boston for the last decade. She has six siblings and three amazing nephews Outside of work and school Janice enjoys spending time with her friends and family and reading a good book.

Janice is preparing to represent Samaritans at the 2021 NYC Marathon on November 7th!

Losing a loved one to suicide is a painful and difficult experience. For those coping with suicide loss, the most helpful support may come from someone who has been through a similar loss. Samaritans offers free services focused on compassion and peer support to suicide loss survivors, people who have lost loved ones to suicide.

Grief Support Services SafePlace

Survivor to Survivor Visits

Samaritans’ SafePlace meetings are open groups of caring people who have lost a loved one to suicide. SafePlace peer support groups for suicide loss survivors are facilitated by trained volunteers who have also lost a loved one to suicide.

SafePlace is not a professional therapy group, but rather a peer support group providing a forum for exploring feelings often not understood by others. It offers a chance to share helpful resources, and to give and get support through the long process of grieving. Meetings are free, ongoing, and drop-in.

Talking about such a tremendous loss can be overwhelming for some. For suicide loss survivors who are not ready to attend a support group or need some extra time outside of SafePlace meetings, Samaritans’ volunteers are available to offer individualized support. During Survivor to Survivor Visits, trained suicide loss survivor volunteers meet with bereaved individuals or families in their homes or another comfortable setting.

Volunteers are available to listen, answer questions, and provide support and resources.

Be there when someone needs you most

Volunteer on our 24/7 Helpline Each day, people who struggle with loneliness, depression, or suicidal feelings turn to Samaritans’ 24/7 Helpline for nonjudgmental support. On the other side of a phone call or text message, they find a caring listener ready to provide compassion. You can be that caring listener!

We have a variety of volunteer opportunities on our Helpline. Volunteers include teens (15+), students, working adults, and retirees. You don’t need to worry about having any prior training.

All we ask is that you: • Connect with our mission of suicide prevention through compassionate listening • Follow our model of not giving advice or offering your opinion • Provide a safe and nonjudgmental place for our callers and texters to share • Practice open and honest communication • Have basic computer skills • Complete 40 hours of training Few things can be as rewarding as knowing that you were there when someone needed you most. The more trained volunteers we have, the more people we can serve.
