Reflections and Reimaginings from Our CEO It’s hard to believe that the COVID-19 pandemic continues to touch our lives in unpredictable and challenging ways. While impact of the pandemic cannot be understated, some of the changes it has brought have led us to unexpected opportunities with demand for our services beyond the Boston area: • Participants in our Grief Support Services now hail from across the country and around the world.

• Our pilot program for Survivors of Suicide Attempts, conducted remotely, saw participants joining from across the nation.

• Our Community Education and Outreach team has presented workshops for almost 10,000 participants, all virtually.

• The Crisis Services team along with 394 trained Helpline volunteers, all online, from all around the world, answered nearly 75,000 calls, texts, and chats on our 24/7 Helpline.

The pandemic has given us the opportunity to reimagine what partnerships look like. In this year unlike any other, we worked to harness the potential of local and national connections. Our work connected us to Massachusetts General Brigham Hospital and McLean Hospital where we are collaborating on programs that will shape the future of suicide prevention. We are collaborating with police departments and community stakeholders to develop suicide loss response teams to work with loved ones immediately after a suicide. Similarly, we are preparing for the implementation of the national 988 number by enhancing our resources and working with our state and local legislators.

It is remarkable to see what we have learned about connecting to one another, whether via Zoom meeting with someone across the country or within communities right here in Boston. Although we long for the day when we can again gather in person, our remote programs have expanded our idea of what is possible.

Looking forward, we will envision the best of both in-person and remote services.

Growing from this experience will help us maximize the full potential of what Samaritans does now, and what we aim to do to help save lives.

Our Mission

Our mission is to reduce the incidence of suicide by alleviating despair, isolation, distress and suicidal feelings among individuals in our community, 24 hours a day; to educate the public about suicide prevention; to help those who have lost a loved one to suicide; and to reduce the stigma associated with suicide. Our services emphasize confidential, nonjudgmental, and compassionate listening.

OUR PROGRAMS

24/7 Crisis Services

At the start of the pandemic, we shifted our 24/7 Helpline operations to be remote. We enabled our enthusiastic volunteers to take calls and texts remotely, and made changes to our technology.

Our 24/7 Crisis Services are available because of our remarkable volunteers who answer phone calls and text conversations from people needing someone to listen. In addition to answering Samaritans’ 24/7, free, confidential, and anonymous Helpline, our volunteers answer calls and chats from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

In efforts to best serve our community, our 24/7 Helpline is available in more than 240 different languages with the aid of a tele-interpreter service.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Each day, people who are lonely, desperate, or struggling turn to Samaritans in search of compassion and support. We’re here to answer their call for help.

On the other side of a phone call or text message, they find a caring listener ready to provide compassion. You can be that caring listener. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities on our Helpline. Volunteers include teens (15+), students, working adults, and retirees. You don’t need to have any prior training.

Many people are afraid to talk about suicide, but it is often a great relief to someone thinking about suicide to know that you have noticed their pain.

If you worry that someone you know may be suicidal, our services can offer suggestions about how to support them.

We are not only available for people experiencing suicidal crises, but also for those who are feeling sad, alone, discouraged, or upset. Whatever the reason for reaching out, our volunteers are there to help.

OUR PROGRAMS

Community Education & Outreach A critical part of our mission is to build expertise in preventing suicide. We are here to teach the community how to recognize the warning signs of suicide and how to provide support.

Our workshops on suicide prevention are delivered to middle and high schools, colleges and universities, workplaces, elder care facilities, and other community organizations.

Once physical distancing measures were instituted, our workshops moved to a virtual format. Throughout the pandemic, regularly scheduled weekly webinars were offered to the public.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 10-24.

Youth feel immense pressure from bullying, harassment on social media, difficult coursework, unhealthy friendships and relationships, and many other stressors. Unfortunately, many young people struggle to reach out for help, in part because of the stigma associated with suicide and mental illness. Our free school-based workshops foster tough conversations for students, parent groups, faculty, and administration.

Youth workshops aim to help students understand their emotions and feel less alone. Small interactive groups give young people a safe forum for conversation. Students discuss suicide myths, prevention strategies, self-care and coping, identifying trusted adults, and what to do when they or a friend needs help. While the youth workshops are most appropriate for ages 12 and up, they can be tailored to any group.

Aging Population — As people over the age of 85 have the second-highest suicide rate of all groups, it is important to provide resources for the aging population to protect themselves and others at risk of depression and isolation.

Elders may develop depression due to an illness, death of a loved one, moving from their home, or feeling lonely. Workshops break the stigma by letting elders know they can talk about suicide, and giving them a resource to turn to for help.

Workplace — Employees are in a good position to notice changes in behavior in their fellow coworkers. Workplace workshops break down the stigma of suicide and provide a supportive environment for discussion among colleagues. Hosting a workplace workshop demonstrates your commitment to your employees’ mental wellbeing. These workshops also support employees whose lives have been touched by suicide.

OUR PROGRAMS

Grief Support Services Losing a loved one to suicide is a uniquely painful and difficult experience. Samaritans offers suicide loss survivors non-judgmental listening, compassion, and peer support. This year, we took our services virtual and saw participants from across the country with nearly 2,183 connections.

SafePlace Meetings SafePlace is an open, drop-in support group filled with caring people who have experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide. SafePlace provides a forum for exploring feelings often not understood by others. Facilitated by trained volunteers who have also lost a loved one to suicide, SafePlace offers a chance to share helpful resources and get peer support through the grieving process from those who understand the journey.

Survivor to Survivor Services Grief Support Services consists of two programs, SafePlace Meetings and Survivor to Survivor visits. Our team of trained volunteers provide peer support to those who have also lost a loved one to suicide, in a group or individual setting.

Volunteers are 18+ and are dedicated to providing hope and support to those who are grieving.

Annual Memorial Samaritans hosts an annual memorial service open to suicide loss survivors to remember their loved ones.

Grief After Suicide Presentations given by bereavement specialist Dr. Jack Jordan, PhD aimed to help survivors better understand suicide and the grief that may follow.

Survivors of Suicide Attempts (SOSA) We recently piloted a group for survivors of suicide attempt with tremendous success. Based on interest and lack of other such programming available to attempt survivors in New England, we plan to offer another group in Spring 2022.

The Samaritans Council is a dedicated group of supporters who help raise the visibility of Samaritans and support fundraising efforts.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

The Council affords members an opportunity to engage more deeply with a mission important to them, contribute to widening the circle of supporters, establish an official relationship from which they can act as brand ambassadors, and engage with others who are similarly committed to Samaritans and its success.

Samaritans’ Helpline volunteers, staff, and Board of Directors steer the mission to reduce the incidence of suicide. A collection of professionals with talent, time and relationships in the fields of law, marketing, brand building, advocacy and finance can augment this work. This is the role of the Samaritan’s Council.

The 4x4x48 challenge is a run, 4 miles, every 4 hours for a total of 48 miles, created by a Navy Seal and ultra marathoner that not only challenges one’s physical endurance but mental toughness as well.

Terence Morrissey accepted this challenge in the wake of Covid inspired awareness of our collective mental health and suicide prevention. Terence’s hope is that over time, with awareness and openness, more and more people will begin to understand that it is okay to not be okay, things will get better, and they are not alone.

He was honored to have run for such an important cause and raise awareness to about something that impacts so many. The support Terence received over that weekend was amazing…donations, running videos, support texts, etc. and it just goes to show, people really care.

Our Events Each year, more than 3,000 people help us raise awareness about suicide prevention and mental health that supports our work at Samaritans. This year, you helped raise over $1.27M to support those struggling with the loss of a loved one, suicidal ideation or mental health issues.

2020 proved to be a challenging one for our Boston Marathon team.

Though not the event they had envisioned in April, several of them ran virtually as part of Team Samaritans in September after the traditional date was cancelled.

They were challenged in ways they never thought possible. Each member of our 14 person team came together for the common goal of raising money and awareness in memory of a loved one lost to suicide or in support of those who struggle.

Altogether, they raised more than $213,000, which fell over 2 fiscal years.

We are grateful for their commitment.

On September 26, 2020 we hosted our 5K Run/Walk for Suicide Prevention virtually for the first time ever. Thank you to all who virtually ran, walked, or biked either alone or with your family and friends. Together we raised over $572,878 for Samaritans’ services.

Breakfast for Hope Our second virtual event for the Breakfast for Hope proved to be another inspiring morning. We were joined by those across the country to hear stories and insights from Helpline volunteer and anti-shame activist Kyle Freeman, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) as well as volunteer and Samaritans marathon runner Janice Dominguez, SafePlace Leader Joe Cedrone and Committee Chair, Jorn Velaers.

TCS New York City Marathon

In what would have been Samaritans first year participating as an official charity partner, the TCS New York City Marathon was cancelled due to the worldwide pandemic. Our 2020 team will get to run with our 2021 team on November 7th.

The challenges we faced during FY21 were extensive, while the need for our services became even more essential.

We’re proud of our fundraising committees, which pivoted to virtual formats, our supporters who continued to give from their hearts, and our HopeRaisers who took the challenge to fundraise head-on.

Our History

For 47 years, Samaritans has provided lifesaving suicide prevention services in Massachusetts. Established in Boston by Monica Dickens, Samaritans follows the principles of befriending created by Samaritans in the United Kingdom.
