Letter from Our Executive Director It’s safe to say my first year as Executive Director at Samaritans has not gone as I expected. I began my role at the beginning of December 2019 and was excited for the new year ahead.

Early 2020 felt promising as we solved challenges and got creative about how to improve our services to reach more people in need. When we closed our physical offices in midMarch due to COVID-19, no one expected we would still be working from home by the time I wrote this letter.

We quickly took all of our programs remote and virtual, as we knew that our services would be more critical than ever. People were feeling the strain of uncertainty, financial hardship, and fear for their health, and our Helpline needed to remain available 24/7. Our Grief Support Services needed to adapt quickly as well, so that suicide loss survivors would still be able to find comfort with their peers. The community still needed our suicide prevention workshops so that they could identify warning signs in their loved ones, especially as it is tougher to do so now while physically distant.

What I saw in those moments of transition and adaptation, and what I continue to admire and respect most about Samaritans, was the overwhelming dedication to serving the people who need our services by the devoted people who make it happen – volunteers, staff, Board members, Council members, donors, partners, and foundations. Each person plays a crucial role in making sure that we achieve our mission every day. I am so glad we are here for those who need us, grateful new people are finding us so we can support them, and proud that no matter the challenges, we’re doing the work we need to do.

We are uncertain of how long this will last – uncertain of when it will be okay to go back to work or school, travel, and hold events. This time is truly unprecedented, and we can all benefit from some conscientious mental health awareness, patience with ourselves, and additional support. This year has only proven further to me how critically important our services continue to be. It is making for a unique first year but I am so glad I’m here.
