The Pooks, Beatties, and friend wait for Santa to arrive during the Bradford VFW Post #212 children’s Christmas party held December 3rd at the Vets Center location on Barbour Street. They tell us that they’ve attended in past years, and they are once again having a great time.

Earlier they played a Christmas song game with the elves, then they enjoyed the pizza, and now it was time for the big man himself (and of course, the presents). (See more pictures in the photo gallery.)

While they’ve attended and contributed to the Bradford VFW Post #212 Christmas Meat Raffle for many years, this no doubt will bring them many more friends (that they didn’t even know they had), and motivate them to attend many more.

Puublic Open House Planned For McKean CountyBridge Projects (Clearfield, PA) – The community is invited to a public open house regarding the replacement of three McKean County bridges included in the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. The open house will be focused on important information including the construction schedule and traffic changes that are planned to take effect while the bridges are being replaced.

Outlined below are details of the bridges to be replaced and the public meeting.

Bridges: Route 346 (Derrick Road) bridge, spanning Foster Brook in Foster Township, about three miles east of Bradford (JV-65) Route 346 (Derrick Road) bridge, spanning Foster Brook in Derrick City, (JV-66) Route 646 (Olean Road) bridge, spanning Pennbrook Run in Foster Township, about a mile north of the village of Gilmore (JV-67) Open House Location: Foster Township Building

Wednesday, December 14, 2016 from 4 – 6 p.m.

Representatives from Plenary Walsh Keystone Partners will be available to discuss the bridge projects and answer questions. There will be no formal presentation. Construction plans will be on display for reference.

These bridges are referred to as JV-65, JV-66 and JV-67. They are three of 558 bridges being replaced under the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. JV references the joint-venture partnership between Walsh/Granite, which is leading construction for the entire project.

These bridge replacements are part of the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project, a public-private partnership (P3) between PennDOT and Plenary Walsh Keystone Partners (PWKP), under which PWKP will finance, design, replace and maintain the bridges for 25 years. The P3 approach

allows PennDOT to replace the bridges more quickly, while achieving significant savings and minimizing impact on motorists.

Our photos, all 135 of them, were gleaned from three separate events that took place last Saturday, December 3rd.

Two of them occurred at the same location, Bradford’s VFW Post 212 along Barbour Street, Bradford. The first event was that of the Children’s Christmas Party held in the Vet’s Center where children were served such goodies as cookies and pizza, and games were conducted by the Ladies Auxiliary Elves while they all waited for Santa, to arrive. The next event was that of Holiday Craft and Vendor Show held at the Foster Township Municipal building which was, as in past years, packed with vendors and well attended by people looking for pre-Christmas gift possibilities. And the final event was that of the annual Bradford VFW Post #212 Christmas Meat Raffle held at the Post. Only six representative photos from each event were placed on the pages of this issue with the balance of 117 pictures being relegated to the photo gallery. While some of those placed in the gallery are just variations of those in the paper, at least 70 photos display completely different content. A look through the gallery won’t be disappointing……..L.A. Rotheraine’s Ancient Gardening Wisdom Column is running on page 18 this week. The title is “Ancient Ireland And Seeds,” and deals with alternative methods for increasing seed quality and crop production. While his explanations might be perplexing or seem nonsensical to some, we can assure our readers that ideas coming from prize winning Harvard University research scientists are seemingly no less strange, for example, one such prize winning finding states that the DNA Molecules are “selfaware”……..Remember to mark your calendars for this Saturday, December 10th, when an Old Fashioned Christmas will take place, including shopping in the downtown, caroling, horse and carriage rides, and edible treats available in many of the stores. Then, later in the day we can expect the inaugural presentation of the “Winter Wine-Walk” to take place in many downtown stores. It’s A Matter Of Opinion...

Guest Columnist “Pardon” -by Bob Perry

In a letter to POTUS Barack Hussein Obama, Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl has requested a pardon (Pardon me) in an attempt to avoid trial for desertion and misbehavior scheduled for April 2017. After numerous delays the trial is to take place and Bergdahl faces up to life in prison if found guilty. It appears the delays may have been intentional to get the trial to take place after Obama leves office. The letter requesting a pardon, however, may not have been anticipated.

Remembering as to what happened, PFC Bergdahl walked off his base in Afghanistan in 2009 leaving his fellow soldiers the task of searching for him reportedly costing a number the soldiers to lose their lives. Bergdahl was captured by the Taliban and held prisoner for five years. In a highly controversial prisoner swap by President Obama, Bergdahl was exchanged for five (The Taliban Five) Guantanamo Bay prisoners; described as ‘the worst of the worst’. Remember also that Obama and his administration failed to notify Congress 30 days in advance (as required) of the transfer of any detainees. The real question is what will Obama decide to do in response to the letter?

Sort of damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. If he does grant a pardon the case will be closed and the relating documents will be sealed, not to be released. By granting the pardon Obama will create the impression he himself is admitting Bergdahl is guilty and deserving reprieve. This action would give some protection to the legacy of Obama as details about the negotiations with the enemy and inappropriate release of the detainees will be hidden but will leave some questions unanswered. The letter requesting a pardon does however create the impression of an admission of guilt on Berghdal’s part. In the case Obama does not grant clemency then once POTUS-Elect Trump will be put in the spotlight which is something Obama might like to see play out. Lawyers for Bergdahl are also considering requesting dismissal of the charges as they are claiming a fair trial is not possible as Donald has stated what policy for a deserter, if found guilty, is the extinguishing of that life.

The trial scheduled is a military proceeding and surely any determining influence from comments outside the trial would not be of issue. If the trial is held

the Army itself may be found negligent by admitting Bergdahl into the service as it was known he was discharged prior to completing basic training from the Coast Guard but admitted him anyway.

The discharge was a ‘uncharacterized discharge’ which is without determination of character.

After all considerations it looks like there may be no penalty for Berghdal as he could receive a medical discharge.

His lawyers might well request such a determination before a lengthy trial. In the end transparency may be lost which is surely the goal of both Obama and the Army.

OBITUARIES

Virginia Abbott

(PORT ALLEGANY) — Virginia B. Abbott, 89, of Port Allegany, died Sunday (Nov. 27, 2016) at her residence.

She was born Dec. 10, 1926, in Kane, a daughter of Norman K. and Lillian M. Bradybaugh Quick. On Nov. 1, 1943, in Cattaraugus, N.Y., she married Kenneth E. Abbott, who died Jan. 31, 2013.

Mrs. Abbott attended Kane schools and was employed by AVX Ceramics in Olean, N.Y. Virginia was an avid sports fan. She was a dedicated Buffalo Bills and Port Allegany Gators fan. She traveled to many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sporting events over the years. She also enjoyed baseball and softball.

She is survived by one daughter, Sherri E. Kinney of Port Allegany; one son, Ralph Abbott of Port Allegany; four grandchildren, Shane (Keegan) Abbott, Wendy Abbott-Roys, Denise Hughes and Josh (Jorni) Kinney; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and husband and a great-grandson.

At Virginia’s request, there was no visitation or funeral services.

Harry Pilon

(ELDRED) — Harry L. Pilon, 93, of

West Eldred Road, passed away Monday (Nov. 28, 2016) at the Bradford Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born Jan. 25, 1923, in Portville, N.Y., he was a son of Edmond and Madge Bailey Pilon. On Oct. 6, 1951 in the Duke Center United Methodist Church, he married Margaret “Peggy” Trask, who passed away on Feb. 2, 2003.

Harry grew up in Portville and had attended the Deer Creek School, he moved to West Eldred in the 1950s where he spent the rest of his life.

Mr. Pilon was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II. He was employed for over 39 years at the American-Olean Tile Company where he held various positions until his retirement in 1987.

He enjoyed spending time at home and tinkering around the house, as well as watching the birds. He was an avid card player.

Surviving are two sons, Leon (Tammy Starks) Pilon of Eldred, and Kent Pilon of Hudson, Ohio; three daughters, Jina (Tom) Clay of Akron, Ohio, Gay Ellen (John) Pernau of Ridgeley, W.Va., and Linda Wesche of Wellsville, N.Y.; seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; and a brother, Edmond Pilon in Texas.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Pilon.

At Harry’s request there were no services held; burial was in East Sharon Cemetery.

Roger Stanford

Roger E. Stanford, 65, of Lewis Run, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 29, 2016) at UPMC Hamot in Erie.

Born April 14, 1951, in Santa Monica, Calif., he was the son of the late Loretta Zeigler Stanford and George E. Stanford, who survives. On Feb. 10, 1996 in Cheektowaga, N.Y., he married Rita Gredzicki Stanford, who survives.

He was a 1969 graduate of Bradford Area High School.

He then served in the U.S. Navy.

After the Navy, he attended technical school for automotive mechanics in California, where he began his career as an automotive technician, specializing in converting Volkswagen Beetles into dune buggies and fabricating race cars.

He returned to Bradford in 1977 and continued his career, working at various shops around the community until his retirement.

He loved racing, building race cars and was a motorcycle enthusiast. He loved animals and rescuing dogs. In his retirement, he developed a passion for carpentry and gardening.

In addition to his father, George Stanford of Bradford; he is survived by two sisters, Cheri L. (Michael) English of John’s Creek, Ga., and Judy K. (Mark) Sievert of Green Bay, Wis.; and eight nieces and nephews.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Sue Stanford, in infancy.

Helen Collins

Helen I. Collins, 92, of Marshburg, passed away Wednesday (Nov. 30, 2016) at Bradford Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sugar Grove on June 3, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Leo M. and Naomi Winchill Drake. On Dec. 29, 1948, in Warren, she married Roland L. Collins, who passed away Jan. 6, 1994.

Mrs. Collins attended a one room schoolhouse, Stilson Hill Elementary School, and graduated from Sugar Grove Vocational High School. After high school, she worked for Bell Telephone for a time before her marriage.

She was a member of the Central Baptist Church. Mrs. Collins had a strong love for Christ, enjoyed reading, spending time with her family and especially her greatgrandchildren and her puppies, and had a spunky attitude to all who knew her.

She is survived by two daughters, Delores (Jim) Blyth of Huntersville, N.C., and Shirley (George) Wilson of Mount Jewett; a son-in-law, Earl (Pam) Hartman of Warren; five grandchildren, Brenda (Brian) Allison, Todd (Nicole) Hartman, Melissa (John) Hanson, Christina (Chris) Wilson and Kyle (Hillary) Wilson; 14 greatgrandchildren, Ashley, Royce, Chase, Brandon, Seth, Tony, Austin, Colton, Caleb, Satene, Alexis, Emiree, Drake and Kori; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Baker; a grandson, Danny Blyth; and two brothers, A. Sanford Drake and Lester A. Drake.

Burial was in McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette.

Whatever your age now, it’s wise to prepare yourself mentally and physically for growing older. Adults today, the CDC adds, are looking not only to extend their lives, but to enjoy a healthier, more active lifestyle well into their later years.

Here are a few simple tips to incorporate into your daily routine to ensure healthy aging: 1. Tailor your diet to include lots of organic fruits and vegetables, as well as healthy fats such as omega-3s, and limiting your intake of processed foods and added sugar.

2. Exercise three to four times a week, including a mix of moderateintensity activity like brisk walking or water aerobics, along with vigorous-intensity activities such as playing tennis or hiking. Adding strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups is important to consider as well.

3. Work with your health care provider to introduce a foundational supplement regimen into your daily routine.

If your meals or snacks consist mostly of sweets or refined grains that give you a short-lived rise in blood sugar followed by a crash, that could also explain your lack of energy. See if you feel like walking more after a balanced meal that includes a vegetable and/or fruit, whole grains, and beans, poultry or other lean protein. Finally, if you’re chronically low on energy, talk with your doctor since this can be a sign of anemia, a thyroid disorder, medication side effect or another health problem that can be treated.

Dexter’s Service center is in second place, and Tasta Pizza is in third.

Brown Butter Pecan Cinnamon Bars

Recipe courtesy of Anolon Gourmet Cookware Anolon Vesta 9-by-13-inch Baking Dish 10 ounces unsalted butter, softened 1 1/2 cups firmly packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup sugar 2 large eggs 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 2 cups coarsely chopped pecans, toasted Heat oven to 350 F. Grease baking pan.

In medium pot over medium-low to medium heat, heat butter until golden brown, stirring frequently and making sure to scrape bottom of pan. Remove from heat and pour into bowl when golden brown to stop more coloring. Set aside.

Whisk together sugars, eggs and vanilla extract.

Whisk in butter in steady stream. Add flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and pecans. Stir until evenly blended.

Spread batter evenly into prepared pan.

Bake until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Do not overcook or bars will be dry. Let cool to room temperature then cut into pieces.

Sausage, Cheddar and Sourdough Strata

Recipe courtesy of Anolon Gourmet Cookware Large Anolon Advanced Umber Skillet 8 ounces sweet Italian sausage, removed from casing 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 large onion, thinly sliced 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 1/2 teaspoons fresh thyme 1/2 teaspoon dried basil 1 large red bell pepper, thinly sliced butter Anolon Vesta 9-by-13-inch Baking Dish 1 sourdough baguette (12 ounces), cut into 1/2-inch slices 4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, shredded 8 large eggs 2 cups milk 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Heat skillet over medium heat. Add sausage and cook until no longer pink, 7-8 minutes, breaking into smaller pieces with wooden spoon. Transfer to bowl with slotted spoon. Add oil to skillet; stir in onion, garlic, thyme and basil: cook 2 minutes. Add bell pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, 5-6 minutes; remove from heat.

Butter baking dish. Place single layer of bread on bottom; top evenly with onion mixture and sprinkle with sausage and cheese. Top with remaining bread slices.

Whisk together eggs, milk, salt and pepper until well combined. Slowly pour mixture over top layer of bread. Cover with plastic wrap and place heavy objects (e.g., canned food) on top to weigh it down.

Refrigerate at least 2 hours, or up to overnight.

Heat oven to 350 F. Remove baking dish from refrigerator and uncover.

Bake until strata is puffed and browned, and eggs are set, about 40-50 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool 5 minutes before cutting into serving pieces.

Pumpkin and Macadamia Soup

Recipe courtesy of Anolon Gourmet Cookware 3.5-Quart Anolon Advanced Umber Saucepan 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/3 cup roughly chopped raw macadamia nuts 1 small white onion, chopped 1 tablespoon grated ginger 2 cups diced squash or pumpkin 1 apple, peeled and chopped 3 cups chicken stock roasted macadamia nuts, for garnish In heavy-based, large saucepan, heat oil; add raw macadamias, onion and ginger, and saute over medium heat 2-3 minutes, or until golden.

Add squash and apple, and cook 1-2 minutes longer then pour over stock. Cover and cook 15-20 minutes, or until squash is soft.

Tip off some liquid and reserve then puree remainder using immersion blender, or in blender until smooth and creamy. Add reserved liquid to bring to desired consistency.

Reheat and serve in bowls sprinkled with roasted macadamias.

Salary Negotiations Can Help Boost Your Income When Changing Jobs

Whether you’re actively looking to make a move or being lured away by a recruiter, a new job offers many opportunities for growth. Discovering how different organizations run and tackling the learning curve during the first few months is part of the fun, and struggle, of making a change.

Switching employers can also greatly benefit your financial future. While staying at the same job could lead to a modest annual raise, you might be able to negotiate a much larger jump in pay when changing companies. Negotiating a job offer can be daunting, but consider what happens if you don’t negotiate – you might wind up earning less than a hiring manager was willing to offer.

Do your homework to find an appropriate salary range before negotiating.

Whether you are a veteran or a novice negotiator, you may want to spend time researching before sitting down at the table. Keeping in mind that compensation can vary depending on location, look online for studies or personal accounts that reveal the salaries of someone in a similar role.

Several for-profit companies compile and share compensation information online, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics has pay data based on occupation and geography. You could also reach out to recruiters who focus on placing candidates in your industry as they’re accustomed to discussing compensation.

Ancient Gardening Wisdom “Ancient Ireland And Seeds” -by L.A. Rotheraine

When I see genetically engineered seed and chemically polluted farms and gardens I ask myself, “Why?” The introduction of genetically modified seeds requiring the use of debilitating products such as growth hormones, antibiotics, pesticides and chemical fertilizers are poisoning us all.

We consume not only the plants, but also the animals whose food stock consists primarily of the same polluted, genetically reconstructed, food substitute. In doing so, we tamper with the life sustaining nourishment useable by our own digestive processes developed over eons of evolution.

The argument by modern agro-industry is that such methods of modification and pollution are necessary to increase supplies of food for an exploding world population, but in reality they could have concentrated on the use of ancient Hibernian (Irish) methods to produce the same effective increase as has been done in many areas around the world today, including Bradford.

The ancient Hibernians knew that all plant seeds are condensed energy that is dominated by a particular stellar constellation. They knew that they could increase seed and production potential by planting when the sun and moon were in particular positions in relationship to the constellations, and they knew that planting and harvesting the seed at the right time of year could improve the strain for the following year, and increase crop yields.

Components of the Ancient Hibernian methods can be seen in the video “Tomatoes and Charles Darwin,” and by Googling “New Grange Tomb Boyne Valley Ireland.” The reader will find that the New Grange was not a tomb, but among other things, a measuring device used to calculate light differentials for food production.

Spinach and Artichoke Stuffed Mushroom Caps Recipe created by The Lemon Bowl on behalf of Milk Means More Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes Servings: 24 24 large mushrooms, stemmed and reserved 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 clove garlic, grated 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 2 cups chopped frozen spinach, thawed and drained 1 can artichoke hearts, roughly chopped 2 cups crumbled feta cheese 1/2 cup minced onion 1 pinch chili flakes 1 pinch minced scallions

Heat oven to 350 F and place mushroom caps in single layer on baking sheet lined with foil.

Mince reserved mushroom stems and heat olive oil in large saute pan over mediumhigh heat. Add garlic and mushroom stems to pan along with salt and pepper. Saute 23 minutes, or until mushrooms are softened. Add spinach and artichoke hearts to pan and cook until heated through, about 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and place mixture in large mixing bowl. Stir in feta cheese and onion. Adjust seasoning, to taste.

Using small cookie scoop, add 2 tablespoons filling to each mushroom cap. Bake mushrooms 20-25 minutes, or until mushroom caps are softened. Sprinkle with chili flakes and minced scallions to serve.

Serve immediately with crackers or bread.

Butternut Squash Queso Dip

Recipe created by Rachel Cooks on behalf of Milk Means More Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Servings: 10 12 ounces butternut squash puree, frozen 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 finely diced red onion 1 clove garlic, minced 1 can (10 ounces) petite diced tomatoes and green chiles 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 8 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, shredded Place unwrapped squash in microwave safe bowl and heat in microwave 5 minutes at 50 percent power, or until thawed.

In large saucepan, heat oil over medium heat.

Add onion and cook 4-5 minutes, or until translucent. Add garlic and cook 1 minute, or until fragrant.

Add squash, tomatoes, cumin and chili powder, and bring to boil over medium-high heat.

Reduce heat to low and add cheese. Stir until melted and serve immediately.

Parmesan Crisps with Basil and Sun-Dried Tomato

Recipe created by Art From My Table on behalf of Milk Means More Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Servings: 8 6 ounces shredded Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar 8 basil leaves 8 sun-dried tomatoes, jarred Heat oven to 375 F. On baking sheet, make eight flat circles out of 1 1/2 tablespoons cheese each. Bake cheese 5 minutes, or until just beginning to turn golden.

Using metal spatula, remove crisps from pan immediately, placing on rack or plate to cool.

Place vinegar and sugar in small saucepan and boil until mixture is reduced to about 1/4 cup and is thickened.

Top each crisp with 1 fresh basil leaf and 1 sundried tomato. Drizzle balsamic reduction over top.
