The Bradford American Legion Club, Post #108 donated $12,000.00 more from their small game of chance proceeds over the last couple of weeks.

The Salvation Army, Destinations and the Friendship Table each received $4,000.00, as can be seen in the photos within this edition. Other photos and videos for this issue come from a downtown Bradford holiday event that took place on a cold, and snowy day, December 14th. And as bad roads might predict, people stayed in town, and took part in the activities with a mixed report of success by various downtown business owners. In addition, other photos and videos were taken December 14th at a Joint Lions Christmas Party and Fund Raiser, a VFW recognition dinner, and a Christmas concert held at the Hill Memorial United Methodist Church. Because of it’s increased number of pages some items have found themselves shifted to different pages.……..Following the U.S. financial crash in 2008, the President, the Attorney General, and members of Congress made no effort to expose and prosecute those in high places of government who manipulated laws, and those in the banking and finance industry who caused long term damage to millions of our citizens.

This is a travesty of justice. More recently a guy named Snowden broke the law and leaked proof of illegal, obviously unconstitutional, immoral, non-socially acceptable activity by the National Security Agency. So what does the President, the Attorney General and Congress do? They hammer the deep throat, and ignore the Congressmen, the National Security employees, and cabinet members, as well as contractors who have been thereby exposed as being involved in criminal activity. Another travesty, or is it that the Constitution allows the scales of justice to be weighted in favor of the elected rulers and their wealthy patrons?

It’s A Matter Of Opinion...

Guest Columnist “Religious Freedom” Each year at Christmas time there are increased attacks on religion and the Christian religion in particular. This country was founded as a result of the Pilgrims seeking freedom of religion escaping the constraints on religious freedom in Europe and England.

One of the leaders who organized and lead the Pilgrims crossing the Atlantic was William Brewster who happens to be my 12th great-grandfather in direct lineage. History shows that Brewster was the spiritual leader of the Plymouth Colony.

As a prayer of thanksgiving, Brewster led the congregation with Psalm 100 on their journey.

Religious freedom was achieved, and when the 13 colonies were established, Judeo-Christian values were the very cornerstone of the principles used by our founding fathers.

Celebrating the birth of Jesus of Nazareth on December 25th is a cherished tradition in most of the households in America and there are those who attack the freedom of religion we enjoy. There is a push by atheist (usually found to be agnostics) to have religious functions banned whenever the functions (singing, displays, proclamations, etc.) involve any property of the government, including the courts and schools.

One such group is The Freedom From

-by Bob Perry Religion which is attempting to educate the public on non-theism and to promote the constitutional principle of separation of church and state. The keyword here is non-theism and whenever that pops up I pray for such people that are essentially Godless indicating to me there they somehow feel they are the highest level of consciousness.

There is another attack on freedom of religion and it can be found in a religion that declares it is the only valid religion and has the goal of one day being the only religion allowed through the implementation of Sharia Law. Sharia law possibly cannot exist with either secularism or democracy, but with the ever growing Muslim population in the world, the challenges will continue.

The severe restrictions and unfairness imposed upon women by Sharia Law should be a wake-up signal to its mere acceptance. At this time of year all should review the Christian virtues that were used to establish this great country and give thanks that here in America we continue to have freedom of religion; not freedom from religion; nor an imposed singular religion.

Embrace your religion and attempt daily to connect with the creator. Practice your religious freedom. Merry Christmas to you from yours truly.

OBITUARIES Virginia O’Hara Virginia B. Wallace O’Hara, 85, of Bradford, passed away on Sunday (Dec. 8, 2013) at the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, C h e e k t owa g a , N.Y. She was born on March 30, 1928, in Bradford, a daughter of the late Lloyd and Catherine Page Moore. She was the widow of both Samuel S. Wallace and Addison I. O’Hara.

She was employed by the former Rite Light Co. in Warren.

She is survived by two daughters, Sarah E. DiBlasi of Brooksville, Fla., and Rose Ann Wallace of Groveland, Fla.; two sons, Neil E. Wallace of Bradford and Howard L. (Mona) Wallace of North Collins, N.Y.; three sisters, Doris Deisfield of Sanford, N.C., Sara Spring of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Margaret Stady of Allegany, N.Y.; step grandson, Rick (Judy) O’Hara of Ransomville, N.Y.; five grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Willow Dale Cemetery.

Bonnie Henderson

Surviving, in addition to her husband Rex of 59 years, are four daughters, Sherri (Douglas) Schulze of Bradford, Hope (Ralph) Johnson of Raymond, N.H., Linda Clinch of Manchester, N.H., and Brenda Henderson of Manchester; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Jacqueline Rhoades Jacqueline Y. “Turkey” Rhoades, 70, of Bradford, passed away on Tuesday (Dec. 10, 2013) at The Pavilion at BRMC. She was born on June 20, 1943, in Bradford, a daughter of the late Louis and Freda Smith Gardner. On Feb. 6, 1962, in the Grace Lutheran Church, Bradford, she married Stanley I. Rhoades, who survives.

She was employed by the former Congress Street Diner for 10 years until they closed; at that time she started working for the former Parkview Supermarket; she worked there for 14 years until they closed.

In addition to her husband of 51 years, Stanley Rhoades of Bradford, she is also survived by two sons, Joseph (Jamie) Rhoades and Adam (Abbie) Rhoades, all of Bradford; four sisters, June Hand of Derrick City, Joanne VanOrden and Betty Jean Austin, both of Bradford, and Norma Walters of Tioga; four grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Willow Dale Cemetery.

Bonnie May Henderson, 82, of 258 Niles Hollow, Bradford, passed away Monday (Dec. 9, 2013) at her residence.

Bonnie was born in Clarion, on May 4, 1931, a daughter of the late Carl and Dorothy Swartzfager Huston. On April 3, 1954, in Salamanca, N.Y., she married Rex B. Henderson Jr., who survives.

Born Nov. 12, 1939, in Bradford, she was the daughter of the late Gerald Evan and Helen Virginia Wigler Leonard. On Aug. 4, 1962, in the First Baptist Church, she married Walter L. Pfister, who survives.

She was employed for a time at Corning Glass. She then raised her family. After her children were raised, she worked for Sehman’s Tire Company as the bookkeeper.

In addition to her husband of 51 years, she is survived by two daughters, Marsha Elaine (Mark) Fischer of Leesburg, Va., and Melinda (Dennis) Tyler of Bradford; a son, Brian Pfister of Bradford; a brother, Samuel (Margie) Leonard of Bradford; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Committal services and burial were in McKean Memorial Park.

Bradford TOPS # Article submitted Leader Johnson conducted the Thursday afternoon, December 12th meeting of TOPS #16 PA at the First Presbyterian church.. The TOPS pledge was recited and Happy Birthday was sung to all those celebrating December Birthday’s. There were 29 weigh-ins with a loss of 24 1/2 pounds.

A: Nutrient content is similar, but there are differences. Like other oranges, mandarin oranges are excellent sources of vitamin C, although not as high in this valuable nutrient as navel oranges, even comparing equal portions. However, mandarins provide greater amounts of two antioxidant phytochemicals: beta-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin. Many people think of mandarin oranges only as canned fruit. Actually, fresh mandarins include Satsumas, Clementines and a wide variety of tangerines. Most are sweeter than other citrus fruits, and they have a bright orange, convenient to peel skin and easily divided inner sections. That makes these small beauties perfect for packing in lunches or on-the-go snacks. If you use canned mandarin oranges, choose juicepacked versions instead of those in light syrup in order to minimize added calories and maximize vitamin C.

Salvation Army Pastor Receives Contribution (NAPSI)—An increasing number of people know beans about weight loss— and that’s a good thing. As it turns out, white kidney bean extract can contribute to cutting down the pounds and the food cravings.

Scientific Research That’s according to Obesity, the official peer-reviewed research journal of The Obesity Society. It recently published the largest weight loss and weight management clinical study to date on the all-natural extract.

In the study, participants taking the extract (Phase 2 Carb Controller®) lost significantly more body fat mass and weight circumference than did the placebo group.

Lead researchers of the study confirm that reduction in body weight was due to loss of fat, not muscle. Additionally, 73.5 percent of participants maintained their body weight after 24 weeks and reported decreased desire for sugary foods.

“This study validates a dozen previous studies conducted in the past decade,” said Dr. Harry Preuss, a Georgetown University professor in the Departments of Biochemistry, Medicine and Pathology. “This study is unique since most clinical trials don’t follow participants for this length of time. The decrease in desire for sweets and increase in overall happiness confirms what we have believed was possible with this specific white kidney bean extract.”

What Else You Can Do In addition to taking the supplement, you’ll be better able to reach your weight loss goals if you: • Eat foods in their natural state. In general, the darker the vegetable, the better.

• Don’t eat within three hours of bedtime. Your body needs time for fat burning and storage.

• Eat protein at breakfast. It boosts the energy burn cycle and changes your metabolism to burn fat instead of muscle tissue.

• Slow down. Chew each bite 20 times before swallowing.

Cheddar Apple Crumble Prep time: 15 minutes Start to finish: 50 minutes Serves: 6 1/2 container (15.8 ounces) Pillsbury(r) Gluten Free refrigerated pie and pastry dough 1/2 cup finely chopped pecans 1 tablespoon powdered sugar 2 cups finely shredded cheddar cheese 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 cup sugar 4 medium apples, peeled, cored, diced (about 6 cups) 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon Heat oven to 400∞F. In medium bowl, mix pie dough, pecans, powdered sugar and cheese until well blended.

Place crumb mixture on parchmentlined baking sheet. Bake 12 to 14 minutes or until golden brown. Cool; crumble.

In 12-inch skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat; stir in sugar. Cook and stir for 2 to 3 minutes, or until mixture begins to caramelize. Stir in apples, lemon juice and cinnamon (caramel will harden). Reduce heat to medium;

simmer 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until apples are tender and caramel is dissolved. Cool.

Spoon apple mixture into six 6-ounce oven-safe ramekins. Top with crumb mixture. Bake 5 to 6 minutes or until warm. Top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, if desired.

Heat oven to 350∞F. Make and bake cookies as directed on container, then let cool. Crumble cookies and set aside.

In 2-quart heavy saucepan, melt white chocolate with 3 tablespoons of cream over low heat until smooth. Cool to room temperature.

In medium bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth. Fold in melted white Chocolate Chip, Raspberry and chocolate.

White Chocolate Trifle In large bowl, beat whipping cream Prep time: 30 minutes until soft peaks form. Fold white chocStart to finish: 2 hours 30 minutes olate mixture into whipped cream.

Serves: 12 In a 12-cup clear trifle bowl, layer 1/3 2 containers (14.3 ounces) Pillsbury(r) of the cookies, 1/3 of the white chocoGluten Free chocolate chip cookie late mixture and 1 pint of raspberries.

Repeat layering using remaining cookdough ies, white chocolate mixture and rasp1 pound white chocolate, chopped berries, ending with raspberries. Top 1 1/2 pints whipping (heavy) cream 2 packages (8 ounces each) cream with cookie crumbs.

Learning Tai Chi And Qigong To Prevent Slips, Trips And Falls (NAPSI)—Many older adults have found benefit from the centuries-old Chinese martial arts tai chi and qigong. “Chi” or “qi” (chee) means “life energy.” “Qigong” (chee-goong) literally means “life energy cultivation.” Tai chi consists of a series of flowing movements while qigong focuses on the repetition of isolated movements and breathing.

For example, Robert Johnson, M.D., Kaiser Permanente chief of Palliative Care in Walnut Creek, Calif., has practiced tai chi and qigong since the 1970s. He believes these mind-body exercises promote good health, flexibility, strength and balance, which help reduce the risk of falling among seniors.

Each year, one out of three adults, age 65 and older, falls due to lack of balance or other reasons. Consider that a record 11,000 baby boomers turn 65 and become Medicare eligible every day, and that can add up to a lot of falls and serious injuries.

“We spend most of our day in sedentary jobs. Many of us sit in front of a computer or television for hours at a time,” Dr. Johnson said. “To age well, we need to move, stretch and keep our joints lubricated and flexible. Otherwise, our muscles, joints and tendons become stiff and brittle, and that can lead to falls and disabilities.”

Dr. Johnson recommends moving the joints in a circular motion. For example, place the hands on the knees and rotate the knees together in a clockwise and then counterclockwise motion. Also, try sitting in a squat position and stand up slowly to strengthen the quadriceps.

Along with doing exercises that promote flexibility, seniors can also help prevent falls and serious injuries by taking a few simple precautions at home: Make Your Home Safe • Reduce tripping hazards such as throw rugs, raised doorway thresholds, or loose carpet.

• Keep paths clear of electrical cords and clutter.

• Add grab bars where necessary—in hallways, stairways and bathtubs.

• Add a rubber bath mat in the shower or tub.

• Improve lighting throughout the house and use night-lights in hallways and bathrooms.

• Keep a phone and flashlight by the bed.

Regulations Can Take A Bite Out Of Patient Care (NAPSI)—When it comes to dental care, some dentists are performing specialized procedures for which they are not licensed, while others are prohibited from providing basic services that are well within their professional skill set. In both cases, patients are the ones who lose out.

That’s the opinion of an orthodontist who is also the owner of the largest individually owned orthodontic practice in North America and founder of the first Smile for a Lifetime chapter—a charitable nonprofit organization that provides orthodontic care to individuals who may not have the opportunity to acquire assistance.

In a recent op-ed piece, Dr. Ben Burris argued that regulations can forbid a specialist, such as a licensed orthodontist, from providing a service outside his or her specialty-even though he or she is trained to deliver that service.

At the same time, he says that there are many cases when dentists, working in what he characterizes as “one-stop shops,”

often perform dental specialties for which they are neither trained nor licensed.

In his article, Burris makes the case that his formal training in dental school and subsequent full-time accredited residency programs equipped him to provide an array of basic dental services and supervise the performance of dental hygienists—something now prevented by state regulations.

He also argues that the current system is unfair to working parents since it can require them to schedule two appointments—one for a cleaning and one for a more specialized service—where one might suffice if the regulations allowed a specialist such as himself to provide both services.

At the same time, he contends that the current system exposes patients to potentially substandard care by making it legal for those who do not have training in dental specialties to provide such care.

Burris urges consumers to speak to their elected officials at the state level and demand a system that puts the welfare of clients—not the convenience of practitioners—first.

Did You Know? Learn About All The Free Consumer Reports Available To You (NAPSI)—You may know about your right to obtain a free annual report from the three national credit bureaus.

Did you also know that you have a right to request information from other nationwide consumer reporting agencies?

Here are some times when you may want access to information beyond what you can find in your credit report: • You think someone may have fraudulently cashed checks using your bank account.

• You are considering applying for insurance.

• You are planning to lease an apartment.

• You’ve been asked by a potential employer for your written authorization to get your work history.

It’s smart to know what’s in your credit report before applying for home financing or an automobile loan. Similarly, there are times when it’s smart to exercise your right to check other sources of consumer information.

If you’re wondering just what reports are available to you, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) makes it easy to find them. Working with the Consumer Data Industry Association (CDIA), the CFPB has put together a list of different types of consumer reporting agencies. By reviewing the list, consumers can learn about the companies and, most importantly, how to obtain a free consumer report.

The CFPB offers this advice: “You may not need to check with every single specialty company on the list. Dif-

ferent companies collect information about different things: your medical records or payments, residential or tenant history, check-writing history, employment history or insurance claims.”

“Being transparent to consumers is a top priority of our member companies,” says Stuart Pratt, president and CEO of the CDIA. “In fact, consumers may find that the companies don’t have information about them-for example, if they haven’t rented an apartment or filed an insurance claim. But the data that specialty consumer reporting agencies maintain is highly regulated and

consumers have a right to access it at no cost.”

Avoiding These Mistakes Can Help Your Credit Score (NAPSI)—There’s good news for consumers who want to improve their credit score. There are a few practical steps they can take that will help them avoid future problems and correct mistakes of the past.

That’s one of the key findings of a report released by free credit report and score provider Quizzle.com. The report found that despite the fact that the unemployment picture is slowly improving, consumers’ average credit scores continue to decline.

Says Quizzle.com CEO Todd Albery, “This is no small issue. Tight lending standards and a lack of understanding about credit reports have held many people back from buying a home, getting a new car or making other large purchases.”

Here are a few common mistakes consumers are making that hurt their credit score. Avoiding these mistakes can contribute to a better score in the future: • Not checking their credit report: A Federal Trade Commission (FTC) study shows that 20 percent of Americans have

errors on their credit report and 5 percent have mistakes that could lead to them paying more or being denied credit.

• Closing their lines of credit: Closing credit card accounts no longer in use decreases the amount of credit that’s available to the consumer. This, in turn, impacts their credit utilization-or how much credit is used compared to how much credit is available.

• Negotiating a lower amount for pastdue accounts: Negotiating a lower balance on past-due accounts can put an additional

long-term blemish on your credit report.

Not only do you get dinged for missed payments, you will also be marked as “settled” (meaning the creditor was forced to take less than full payment) versus “paid in full.”

• Missing payments: This happens more than you think. Things often slip through the cracks, and many folks get sloppy and miss payments by a few days here and there.

• Overshopping for credit: When shopping for the best credit card, avoid applying to several cards at the same time just to see who will approve you. Doing so results in “hard” credit inquiries done by creditors or lenders on your report, which have a negative impact on your credit score.

“Taking charge of your credit report and score is so important when it comes to meeting your financial goals,” said Albery. “Small things can really add up to help folks.”
