This week we visited restaurants and businesses around town to find good subject material for our photographs. Some people we met were celebrating birthdays, some were contributing to such celebratory events, others were taking midday breaks from hunting, and still others were just going about their regular workday routines when we caught them in our lenses.

The pictures and captions tell much of this story. And we’re sure that our readers can attest, there is nothing humdrum about the end of the year holiday season socializing, that begins weeks before Thanksgiving, smoothing the way seamlessly into the New Year. Enjoy!.......Remember to take another close look at our Christmas Magic, page 5, and take notice of additional holiday opportunities that have been added over the last couple of weeks. It would also be good to take a look at our calling cards on page 7 to make your trip into town even more worthwhile.

Shopping in the smaller local stores and eating in locally owned restaurants can be refreshing……..The Bradford Vets’ Club annual children’s Christmas party will take place this weekend, Saturday, December 3rd at 11 AM. Members and friends of the club should contact the auxiliary there to make arrangements for their children, and grandchildren. In addition, later in the day beginning at 6pm, the club will hold its annual Christmas Meat Raffle.

Come one and all……..Also coming up this weekend is the 13th Annual Holiday Craft & Vendor Show at the Foster Township Building, 1185 East Main Street, Bradford. The event will run two days: Saturday December 3rd from 10AM-3PM, and Sunday, December 4th from 11AM-4PM. And once again there will be 40 crafters, and vendors, and miscellaneous food booths. Best of all, admission is free and there will be plenty of free drawings……..The way we see it, President elect Donald Trump promised, in the main, to set our country on a new and even more prosperous economic course. And it’s interesting to watch as he selects those who he thinks can help him do it. He is a successful businessman and entrepreneur, and we have no doubt that he knows a thing or two about business strategy, social behavior, and politics, and is attempting to “get his ducks in a row,” to set his people in place to accomplish this feat. Success in this case, as it has been in all his other pursuits, will be determined by his ability to find the right people who will take his lead and work together toward his grand goal.

It’s A Matter Of Opinion...

Guest Columnist “Registries” -by Bob Perry

The divisions within the country during and following the presidential election gives rise to the possibility of the creation of registries of many sorts. Will President Elect Donald J Trump create a registry for Muslims that migrate to the United States, either by refugee entry or the normal immigration process? This question will receive an answer in the near future but the creation of other registries is a possibility.

The declaration by POTUS Elect is that sanctuary cities will see the federal funds that the noted cities receive will be cut off and the out such a city (or other sanctuary areas) will be to tax the residents of the area or create a registry of those who support the area and will be assessed for payment for support.

The abortion issue is another cause that could create a registry and reduce the fighting as to just who pays for abortions.

For sure the taxpayers should not be left paying for such a controversial practice and this may be needed as the future of the Supreme Court will be changing and the Roe vs. Wade decision faces a possible change. Remember that this decision was based upon a lie.

Then there is the issue of paying the benefits for the illegal aliens that are here and continually find their way into this country lead by a government that fails to enforce the laws which forbid such an invasion. A registry that would find those who support illegal support would create a source of funds paying for health care, housing, food, education and legal coun-

cil.

If you get the picture the new administration is going to make it difficult for government support of issues that a certain segment of the population supports but will be constricting the source of taxpayer funding.

In an article back in September I wrote about ’Who Should Pay’ and this will add to my thoughts of the coming change of direction of funding. In earlier years this country proudly and efficiently helped the poor, hungry and desperate among us and continually the government has forcibly created laws that tax (steal) the income producers and arguably been creating a more secular society. Churches I am familiar with do a very good job feeding the hungry as food kitchens are constantly asking for donations of both food and money and keeping busy.

Other issues that may be addressed could be who should pay for the free cell phones that are fairly easy to obtain? The divisions are, by the appearance in the media) very deep and seemingly growing with perceptions, true or false, but the big question is are we going to be a country of laws like we used to be, or continue down the road forcing more polarization?

The creation of registries could, if instituted, have the pendulum effect producing a correction of the issues created by ‘mob rule’. I suggest those of you who believe in a creator with a higher intelligence stay connected or reconnect with the source of life and life hereafter.

Phyllis Holden

Phyllis N. Holden, 73, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother of Rixford, passed away p e a c e f u l l y on Friday (Nov. 18, 2016) at her d a u g h t e r ’s r e s i d e n c e in Portville, N.Y. Born Jan. 9, 1943, in Bradford, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Doris Becker Volentine. She was married for 42 years to Arthur D. Holden Sr., who died Feb. 19, 2010.

Phyllis attended Limestone (N.Y.) High School. Some of her favorite hobbies were knitting, bowling, bingo, playing games on the computer, and Facebook.

She loved to go camping and sit around the campfires at night, but her most enjoyable times were spent with family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

Surviving are four daughters, Dori Carlson of Westline, Shelley (Ron) Pollock of Portville, Donna Lyons of Boston, Mass., and Neldora (Heath) Lawrence of Port Allegany; three sons, Arthur D. Holden Jr. of Rixford, and Ralph Holden and Michael Holden, both of Bradford; 20 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and infant son; and a daughter, Colleen Hannahs.

Burial was in Rixford Cemetery.

Dennis R. Brosius, 67, of Bradford, passed away on Monday (Nov. 21, 2016) at Select Specialty Hospital, Erie.

He was born on May 3, 1949, in Gowanda, N.Y., a son of the late Elmer and Bernice Hannon Brosius.

He was a graduate of the Bradford Area High School.

On Feb. 27, 1971, in Limestone, N,Y., he married Phyllis M. Bullers, who survives.

He was employed by Halliburton, Bradford, for a number of years as a truck driver before being employed by TempleInland Particleboard Plant, Mount Jewett.

Finally he worked as a bus driver for the Area Transportation Authority until his retirement.

He enjoyed the company of his beloved dog, “Nicki.”

In addition to his wife of 45 years, Phyllis M. Brosius of Bradford, he is also survived by three daughters, Nicole (Brad) Johnson of Warren, Elizabeth Rodriguez of Washington, D.C. and Regina (Scott) Knapp of Marshburg; one brother, Robert Brosius of Hamburg, N.Y.; one sister, Karen Brosius of Hamburg, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Virginia Knapp of Bradford and Rachel (Joe) Carr of Bradford, several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by one son, Roger Rodriguez, one sister, Bonita Himes and two brothers, Ronald Brosius and James Brosius.

At his request there was no visitation; private funeral services were held at the convenience of the family.

Burial was in McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette.

Memorial contributions in his memory be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Richard Wennerstrom

(PORT ALLEGANY) — Richard C. “Poncho” Wennerstrom, 81, of U.S. Route 6, passed away Wednesday (Nov. 23, 2016) in Cole M e m o r i a l H o s p i t a l , Coudersport.

Born Sept. 5, 1935, in Port Allegany, he was a son of Arthur Carl and Elin Johnson Wennerstrom. On April 16, 1958, in New Paltz, N.Y., he married Judy A. McKervey, who died Jan. 14, 2013. They were married 54 years.

Richard was a lifetime resident of the area and a graduate of Port Allegany High School, class of 1952.

Mr. Wennerstrom was employed as a mechanic with Pittsburgh Corning Co., Port Allegany, retiring with over 40 years of service. He also did masonry work for many years before his retirement.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing and gardening.

Surviving are a daughter, Julie A. (Tom) Jeffers of Austin; two sons, Michael J. (Vicki) Wennerstrom of Mount Jewett, Scott A. (Karen) Wennerstrom of Port Allegany; seven grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; a sister, Nancy L. Wennerstrom of Austin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Judy; and two brothers, infant Thomas Wennerstrom and Robert Wennerstrom.

Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.

Thomas Cunningham

(ST. MARYS ) — Thomas R. Cunningham, 59, of Bradford and formerly of St. Marys, died unexpectedly on Saturday (Nov. 19, 2016) at his home.

He was born on July 6, 1957, in St. Marys, a son of the late Edward J. Sr. and Catherine Schager Cunningham.

Tom graduated from St. Marys Area High School and was a resident of Bradford since 1984. He was a member of the YMCA and enjoyed music, especially rock and country. He also liked to play the guitar and lift weights.

He is survived by three sisters, Carol A. (John) Dippold, Mary Kay (George) Gausman and Laura L. (Kevin) Karoleski, and by three brothers, Edward J. (Brenda) Cunningham, Robert P. (RoAnn) Cunningham and Philip S. (Paula) Cunningham, all of St. Marys. He is also survived by seven nieces and eight nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, John Edward Cunningham; and by a nephew, Chad J. Cunningham.

Interment was in the St. Marys Catholic Cemetery.

There was no visitation.

After graduating from Smethport High School in 1950, Bob attended Allegheny College, graduating in 1954 with a degree in Economics and was a member of Air Force ROTC. He met his wife Shirley at Allegheny, and they married in June 1954.

Following college Bob spent three years in active duty, where he piloted and maintained B-25s. Returning to Smethport, Bob managed family interests in oil and gas production, the local water utility and in later years, was Chairman of Hamlin Bank and Trust Co. He served on the Smethport Board of Education, the Bradford Hospital Board and sang in his church choir all of his adult life. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Coudersport Consistory and the Member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Local #388.

He leaves his wife of 63 years, Shirley (Jones) Digel; his three sons, Jeffrey, Martin and Peter and his daughter Julia Kopp; their spouses, Jane, Deborah, Pamela and Brian; his grandchildren, Samuel, Benjamin, Jacob, Abigail, Hilary, Casey and Megan; and his siblings, Anne D. Potter and Mirabel D. Sweet.

His grandson Tyler, sister Hannah D. Potter and brother Howard E. Digel predeceased him.

Bernard F. Fox, 59, of 198 South Ave. Bradford, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday (Nov. 23, 2016) at Bradford Manor.

Born Feb. 22, 1957, in Bethlehem, he was a son of the late Francis B. and Carolyn (Haley) Fox. He attended Liberty High School in Bethlehem and served in the United States Army in 1975.

Bernie worked as a carpenter helper, a painter, and later as a groundskeeper at Lehigh University. In 2005 with the help of his sister Gioia and her son Michael he moved to Bradford.

He was a member of the Cobb Street Baptist Church in Johnsonburg and the Harbor Light Independent Baptist Mission. Bernie enjoyed reading his Bible, tent meetings in Hamburg, N.Y., fishing, swimming, and gardening. He most especially enjoyed spending time with Mary Anne and Wayne Beaver and his family and friends.

Surviving are two sisters, Mary Anne (Wayne) Beaver of Phoenix, Ariz., and Gioia Kestler of North Warren; brotherin-law, Joseph G. Kestler Jr. of Pensacola, Fla.; one sister-inlaw, Joanne Lewandowski-Fox of Peoria, Ariz.; four nephews, Nathan (Kristin) Beaver, Aaron (Diane) Beaver, Michael Kestler and Justin Fox; two grandnephews, Ian and Alec Beaver; and Bernard’s caregivers for the last 11 years, Diane and Mike Nethery.

Recipe courtesy of the National Honey Board Servings: 6 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided 2 pounds beef, cut into 1 1/2-inch chunks 2 cups chopped onion 2 cups carrots, sliced 1-inch thick 2 teaspoons garlic salt 4 cups water, plus 3 tablespoons (optional) 2 cups potatoes, cubed 1-inch thick 2 cups sweet potatoes, cubed 1-inch thick 1/3 cup honey 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground pepper 4 ounces dried apricots 4 ounces pitted prunes 2 tablespoons flour (optional) 2 tablespoons chopped parsley (optional) In heavy 5-quart pot over medium heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil. Add beef and brown on all sides.

Remove beef from pan, add remaining oil, if necessary, and saute onion until tender. Return beef to pan; add carrots, garlic salt and 4 cups water to cover ingredients. Bring to boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer 1 hour.

Add potatoes, sweet potatoes, honey, cinnamon and pepper; stir and return to boil. Reduce heat and simmer, partially covered, 30 minutes, or until potatoes are barely cooked.

Add apricots and prunes and simmer, uncovered, 30 minutes, or until beef is tender. Liquid should be slightly thickened.

If necessary, dissolve flour in 3 tablespoons water and stir into stew; return to simmer, stirring frequently.

Sprinkle with parsley before serving, if desired.

On rimmed baking sheets, spread bread cubes in single layer. Bake, tossing occasionally, 10 minutes, or until dry.

In large bowl, beat eggs; stir in evaporated milk, pumpkin, 1 cup granulated sugar, vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and salt. Add bread; toss gently to coat. Transfer mixture into prepared baking dish; let stand 30 minutes, or until bread is thoroughly saturated.

Combine brown sugar with remaining granulated sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle morsels over bread mixture; top with brown sugar mixture.

Bake 45-55 minutes, or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack 30 minutes to set. Serve warm with ice cream.

Refrigerate 1 hour; pat dry and store overnight, uncovered, in fridge.

Add carrot juice to saucepan and reduce to thick consistency on high heat, 10-15 minutes. Whisk vigorously if juice separates. Whisk in butter. Set aside to cool.

In pot, cover wild rice with chicken stock. Bring to simmer and cook 45 minutes to 1 hour. Season with salt.

Heat oven to 400 F. In frying pan on medium-high heat, sweat onions in olive oil until soft. Add curry spice and toast until aromatic, 1-2 minutes. Add vinegar and salt; stir well. Fold through sun-dried tomatoes.

Place chicken skin-side up on roasting pan fitted with rack. Brush chicken with canola or olive oil and season with salt. Roast about 25-35 minutes until golden brown; internal temperature should be 165 F. Drizzle with roasting juices; add salt and chopped parsley before plating.

To plate, add carrot butter to wild rice; scoop 1/2 cup onto each dish.

Place chicken skin-side up on top of rice. Dollop with onion, curry and tomato mixture.

Pair each serving with a glass of Kenwood Vineyards Sonoma County Pinot Noir 2014.

(NAPSI)—During the busy holiday season, many families find they’re looking for quick and easy meals that are both comforting and festive. Fortunately, following these four hints can help.

1. Cook once—eat twice. Find creative ways to repurpose your leftovers.

Make stews, casseroles and frittatas.

Have leftovers for lunch. When you “brown-bag it” this way instead of going out, you can save an average $1,500 over the year. That can buy a lot of holiday presents—including for yourself— and help you have the time to go shop for them.

2. Focus on your favorites. Outsource the rest. If, say, you love roast turkey, baste that bird all you like but don’t devote a lot of time to the sides.

Bradford Little Theatre To Present A Madcap Holiday Romp

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Bradford! Soon the splendor of the season will burst from the stage of Togi’s Playhouse at the speed of Santa’s sleigh on Christmas night!

Bradford Little Theatre will present “Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!)” on December 2nd and 3rd at 7:30pm and December 4th at 2pm.

“It’s all of your basic Christmas shows thrown into a blender and poured out, mostly recognizable, onto the stage,” said Al Bernstein the show’s director.

Bernstein also performs in the show along side Darrell Klute and Jake Riggs.

The three comic actors perform with wild intensity to cover a massive amount of iconic material in a very short time limit.

The show opens with a serious Jake standing in a top hat and overcoat delivering the opening lines of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” with all the overblown intensity of a Victorian melodramatist. Al and Darrell soon interrupt, wanting

nothing to do with performing the stuffy play for the umpteenth time. Quickly the stage erupts with every Christmas story one can think of, Christmas traditions from around the world, season icons from ancient times, every carol ever sung, and myriad quirky holiday facts.

The madcap romp through the holiday season was written by John K. Alvarez, Michael Carleton, and James FitzGerald and includes original music by Will Knapp.

The actors run through the Christmas canon as if they had been shot from it.

But the pace is not so fast that the stocking are not hung with on the chimney with a great amount of care. The audience is left in awe and exhausted from laughter as the show concludes.

The trio performed the show at Olean Theatre workshop two years ago and fell in love with the hilarious script.

“It was such a fun show,” Bernstein said. “Some town performed this show for 16 years in a row so I spent the $6 on

the script figuring it was worth it. Once we performed it, we couldn’t wait to do it again.

We got the same crew and same actors together for this revival, but don’t worry this show has taken on a new form.

We have fine tuned it and added new material and new takes on the given script.

So if you saw it two years ago we invite you to come enjoy our new rendition.”

Tickets for the show are $10 per adult or $8 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased at Togi’s Restaurant or Graham Florist. Tickets can be reserved by calling Chelsea at 814-598-9956. Tickets will also be sold at the door if available and seating is first come first served.

Doors will open 30 minutes prior to the show start time. And elevator is available if needed.

The show is suitable for all ages, however the existence of Santa is openly questioned, and therefore the theatre advises caution with their youngest patrons.

Aging In Place: What Smart Homeowners Are Doing To Stay Self-Reliant

(NAPSI)—More than 90 percent of older adults prefer to age in place rather than move to assisted living or senior housing, according to the National Aging in Place Council (NAIPC).

To make sure the main course this holiday season – a yummy, juicy ham – is cooked and prepared to perfection, there are some simple steps to follow.

Thaw It While ham can be cooked without thawing, for best results the first step to a tasty ham is properly thawing it in either the refrigerator or cold water. Never thaw a ham on the counter, as it can become subject to bacterial growth when the outside warms but the inside remains frozen.

Remember: The larger the ham, the longer it needs to thaw before cooking.

Bake It Once the ham is properly thawed, start by heating your oven to 325 F and lining a roasting pan with aluminum foil. You’ll want to cook the ham low and slow to avoid drying it out, and lining the pan helps limit the mess.

As it bakes, don’t forget to flip it over about halfway through the process.

Check It When the ham gets close to being done cooking, take the safe route and check its temperature. The USDA recommends bringing pork to 145 F to help ensure it’s cooked thoroughly.

Finish It After pulling the ham from the oven, let it rest 15 minutes before slicing. Because the ham will continue baking outside the oven for a short period, allowing it to rest holds in those delicious juices. If you’re looking for a different way to please your guests’ palates, try glazing it with different mixtures that could include anything from brown sugar to fruit juices.

White Chocolate Popcorn Crunch

5 cups popped popcorn 1/2 cup dried sweetened cranberries 1/2 cup sliced almonds 12 ounces white chocolate baking chips, chopped white chocolate or white candy coating 1-2 tablespoons vegetable shortening (optional) Cover baking pan with foil or wax paper; set aside. Place popcorn, cranberries and almonds in large bowl; set aside.

In double boiler over barely simmering water, melt chocolate, stirring until smooth, or melt according to package directions.

(If chocolate is not smooth after melting, stir in 1-2 tablespoons shortening until mixture is smooth and loose enough to coat popcorn.)

Pour chocolate mixture over popcorn mixture; stir to coat.

Spread onto prepared pan; allow to cool completely.

When chocolate is cooled and set, break into chunks for serving.

Store leftovers in airtight container at room temperature.

Balsamic Glazed Roasted Root Vegetables

Recipe courtesy of Circulon Gourmet Cookware 2 onions, quartered 10 cloves garlic, unpeeled 2 cups carrots, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces 1 celery root, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces 2 parsnips, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces 3 turnips, peeled and cut in half to about 2-inch pieces 1-2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 3-inch pieces

1 cup winter squash, peeled and cut into 2-inch cubes 2-3 potatoes, cut into 2-inch quarters 1-2 white or gold beets, peeled and quartered 2 tablespoons olive oil salt pepper 3 sprigs rosemary 3 sprigs thyme Circulon Symmetry Chocolate sheet pan Glaze: 2 tablespoons oil 3 tablespoons maple syrup 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1/2 teaspoon rosemary Heat oven to 425 F. Combine vegetables, olive oil, salt, pepper, rosemary and thyme; toss well. Spread on sheet pan. Cover and bake 40 minutes.

Check vegetables and cook another 5 minutes, if needed, or until vegetables are tender but not mushy.

Remove rosemary and thyme; add salt and pepper.

Combine glaze ingredients and cook 5-10 minutes until thickened. Pour over vegetables before serving; stir to combine.
