(Harrisburg) – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation today announced that all driver license and photo centers, including its full-service center in Harrisburg, will be closed Thursday, Jan. 1, for the New Year’s holiday.

Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services online through PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services website, www.dmv.state. pa.us.

Driver and vehicle online services are available 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-aweek and include driver’s license, photo ID and vehicle registration renewals; driver-history services; changes of address; driver license and vehicle registration restoration letters; ability to pay driver license or vehicle insurance restoration fee; driver license and photo ID duplicates; and driver exam scheduling. There are no additional fees for using online services.

A complete listing of PennDOT driver and photo license center closings in 2015 is available on the website under “News, Stats and Facts.”

We stopped at Bradford’s newly remodeled, expanded, and improved Callahan Ice Skating Rink on December 28th to see what we could find. And as expected from visits over the previous years, we found families and their friends and relatives from afar, taking advantage of their holiday visits. In addition, we photographed a couple families, friends from Johnsonburg and Ridgeway, PA who where very happy to find our Bradford Rink. Along with these photos taken in the “rest and refreshment area,” which have all found a place on the pages of this issue, we spent some time in the frosty cold ice rink area itself. There we took some videos of those just learning to skate, those who were polishing their form, and those who zoomed around showing us their expertise on the ice……..For those who haven’t heard, the Madison Rising band will make its second appearance in Bradford on Saturday, January 10th, at the VFW, Bradford Vets’ Club Events Center, located at 94 Barbour Street. Doors will open at 6PM with plenty of parking available across Barbour Street in the Stoney North parking lot. Beginning at 7PM Lyndsey Niegowski will take the stage her acoustic guitar, followed by Rick Griesbaum’s Friend or Faux band, to make way for the main event, America’s Favorite Patriotic Rock Band, Madison Rising. The kitchen will be open for the entire event and tickets in advance are still available at the Bradford VFW, the Bradford Chamber of Commerce and Cavallaro’s paint, picture framing, and How Ya Brewing location. Jim Tingley was elected chairperson; Ryan Walb was elected Vice Chairperson; Barbara Pedersen was elected Secretary; and Cindy Funkhouser was elected Treasurer. Present for the annual reorganization meeting were Barry Larson, Jim Tingley, Randy Turner, Mary Walb, Ryan Walb, Cindy Funkhouser, Grant Nichols, Barb Pederson, and Mother Stacey Fussell. The bylaws are in the process of being rewritten by Jim Tingley who will present them for approval during the next scheduled meeting to be held on Wednesday, January 14th, 2015 at the Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce, 121 Main Street, from 6-7:00 PM. All those interested in becoming committee members and/or otherwise helping with the coming year’s First Night Bradford activities should plan to attend.

It’s A Matter Of Opinion...

Guest Columnist “2015 Expectations”

There are numerous possibilities waiting for us in 2015 as the events that unfolded in the latter part of 2014 have started to paint the canvas.

The number one issue is the divisiveness that has been increasing and it will continue. Expect increased demonstrations and protests as divisive entities including race baiters and feckless politicians fuel the fire. It’s the rich against the poor; the illegal immigrants against the citizens; it’s the desired result’s against the legal system (justice); it’s minorities against the cops; it’s entitlements against financial resources; etc.

Much of this is creating cognitive dissonance (uncomfortable tension created by holding two conflicting thoughts concurrently) hooking the emotions of people that feel victimized (real or not) and creating slogans like “off the sidewalk into the streets” that divide people.

Expect increased challenges to the constitutionality of issues as the Justice Department in addition to the current Administration in Washington continues its progressive movement disregarding the constitution and not enforcing current law. Expect a decision from the Supreme Court on whether or not the ACA (Affordable Care Act) must be interpreted as it is written or as some people claim was intended to be crucial. As written the ACA may well collapse as 36 states that did NOT establish state exchanges will deprive applicants of any subsidy making rates for them unaffordable.

Expect technology to continue its rapid advances that decrease necessity for employment and the development of artificial intelligence that will one day replace the need for human thinking.

Expect the quality of life to continue to decrease as we become more a part of the World Economy. Expect the national debt to continue to rise as it is notably not important to those who (elected officials) can control it. Expect interest rates to increase as the Federal Reserve has signaled the reduction of stimulus purchases and this will sharply effect the stock market. Long term bond rates will show the way by increasing ahead of the short term bond rates and expect interest rates to subsequently increase across the board.

Expect the bear to show up on the

market with a hose watering down stock prices. Expect federal taxes to increase taking the necessary direction in reducing the deficit, which is the first step to getting to a balanced budget and eventually a surplus making it possible to reduce the national debt. Don’t expect Congress to be successful in passing meaningful comprehensive tax reform!

Actually let’s all hope they abandon any attempt to pass anything that can be described as comprehensive. It is always a disaster!!

Not to be alarmed, but, consider purchasing and storing emergency food and water as the possibility of interruptions in delivery of foods grown worldwide is increasing. With growing populations in the US and the world there is a growing demand for water. Expect going forward that the price of drinking water to increase with water rationing to expand. Plan wisely.

OBITUARIES Dorothea Fesenmyer Dorothea C. Fesenmyer, 85, of 371 Lang Maid Lane, Bradford, passed away Sunday (Dec. 21, 2014) at the Bradford Manor.

Born Jan. 19, 1929, in Bradford, she was a daughter of the late Basil and Harriett Robbins Gildersleeve.

On Aug. 19, 1950, in St. Bernard Church, she married Howard L. Fesenmyer, who survives.

Mrs. Fesenmyer was a 1946 graduate of Bradford High School. She attended Keuka College and graduated from Clarion University in 1950 with a teaching degree. She taught in the Butler School system and then in 1953 moved back to Bradford. She taught for the Bradford Area School District for many years as a reading specialist, in the Title 1 program, retiring in 1979.

She volunteered for the Bradford Hospital Auxiliary and for the Bradford Hospital Resale Shop and was awarded Female Honoree from the hospital. She was also recognized by the YWCA as Woman of the Year. She was a member of the Thursday Bridge Club at Pennhills Club and a member of the American Association of University Women.

In addition to her husband of 64 years, she is survived by two daughters, Susan (Michael) Carlson of The Woodlands, Texas, and Judy (Jon) Kirk of Olean, N.Y.; one son, David (Cindy) Fesenmyer of Imperial; a sister, Mary Ann (Dick) Bell of Bellfonte; six grandchildren, Michael (Jackie) Carlson, Sarah (Matt) Shivers, Brian Kirk, Timothy (Veronica) Kirk, Catherine (Chris)

Blocher and Jessica Fesenmyer; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Jack Gildersleeve and Larry Gildersleeve.

Burial was in Willow Dale Cemetery, Bradford, PA.

Colleen Cuthbertson

Colleen MacLeod Cuthbertson, 64, of 280 East Main St., Bradford, passed away Tuesday (Dec. 23, 2014) at UPMC Hamot surrounded by her loving family.

Born Jan. 28, 1950, in Salamanca, Brothers Take Rest N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Bruce MacLeod and the late Ellen Mae Mendell Renzulla. She was a 1968 graduate of Salamanca High School.

On Aug. 3, 1968, in the First Baptist Church, she married James Robert Cuthbertson, who survives. She had been employed at The Willows Restaurant as a waitress, The Bradford Era as an advertising salesperson and later at Zippo Manufacturing.

She liked to read, garden, paint and enjoyed any time she spent at Allegany State Park. Her greatest joy was spending time with and loving her grandchildren.

Surviving is one son, Brian (Megan) Cuthbertson of McDonald, Pa.; one daughter, Dr. Jill (Assim Al-Mandhrey) Cuthbertson of Erie; four grandchildren, Alex, Sarah, Max and Sophia; Bradford Journal Photo two sisters, Kay Bretherton of Brad- Taking a little break from ice-skating, Deford and Patty (Todd) Lindell of Great cember 28th at the Callahan Ice Rink, are

BUSINESS & PERSONAL FINANCES Yours, Mine and Ours: Planning Stepfamily-byFinances Jason Alderman The Pew Research Center reports (http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/) that four in ten American adults have at least one steprelative, defined as a stepparent, a step-or-half sibling or a stepchild, in their family. While the Pew study says that many stepfamilies operate harmoniously, it also notes that adults “feel a stronger sense of obligation to their biological family members than they do to their step kin.”

That is one reason why blended family finances can get so messy.

Couples planning to blend families often have to make financial arrangements that respect previous relationships with ex-spouses and their families. Issues range from childcare and eldercare to potentially complex matters involving businesses, investment assets and real estate. That’s why involving trained experts in stepfamily financial planning is a must.

Here’s a basic checklist of issues and solutions potential spouses and partners should consider: Start with all cards on the table. Today’s first-time marriages or partnerships alone can introduce some staggering financial variables – business and inheritance issues, college debt, consumer debt or even past bankruptcies. Couples planning stepfamilies face even more complications. But all couples need to start with a critical first step – sharing personal information with a potential impact on finances.

Start with the following: Current credit reports and credit scores. Extensive loans or bad credit for one or both partners can endanger future purchasing plans for auto, home or tuition. It’s also important to share information about personal or cosigned loans to family and friends.

Assets and liabilities. Potential spouses or partners should know each other’s financial assets and liabilities and any issues connected with them.

As mentioned above, debt and credit issues may be a problem, but if one spouse has extensive assets, it’s important to clarify whether those assets will be shared legally or promised to others.

Legal issues. If divorce, child custody, foreclosure, bankruptcy, or any other civil or criminal legal proceedings are pending against either partner or members of their families, full disclosure is essential.

Business and estate issues. If potential spouses or partners have significant estate or business assets assigned to children, former spouses or family members, those commitments need to be factored into the finances of the

planned marriage or partnership.

Bring in professional expertise.

Beyond disclosure, it’s good to have qualified professionals who have specific expertise with blended families and their many unique issues. Both partners should start by bringing any existing advisors into the discussion.

But if none exist and friends and family members don’t have solid suggestions, the following organizations might provide local experts with specific skills in helping stepfamilies plan: Financial planners. The Association for Financial Counseling, Planning and Education and the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards are two nationwide organizations that can identify advisors in your area.

Tax advisors. Your state CPA society can suggest qualified personal, business and estate tax advisors in your area.

Estate planners and attorneys. Organizations like the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils and the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel might be able to help.

Address problems before move-in.

Most experts tell you it’s best to start any new marriage or partnership with a clean slate – or a slate that’s as clean as you can make it. That’s doubly true with stepfamilies. As many income, asset, debt, child custody, estate and business issues as possible should be identified and solutions put in place before the family is legally joined.

Make a fresh estate plan. Financial experts say it’s time to review all money issues whenever you face a major life event, and remarriage or re-partnership certainly qualifies. Even if the individuals have their own separate estate

matters in order, stepfamily issues restart the planning clock on everything.

Plan – or re-plan – your retirement.

You may have planned a great retirement with a former spouse or on your own, but what if your future spouse hasn’t? Whatever steps you’ve both taken toward retirement, you need to review your strategies so you can retire comfortably together.

Bottom line: Money issues complicate all relationships. But stepfamilies have unique, detailed planning needs that should be discussed and settled before marriage or move-in.

AREA SOCIAL NEWS Cost-Saving Winter Preparedness Tips Can Keep Your Family Safe And Warm (NAPSI)—There are several easy and cost-effective ways that homeowners can winterize their homes this storm season. Get an Energy Audit—Most local utilities can arrange a home energy audit to pinpoint where to focus your win-

terizing efforts. Thermal-imaging cameras, which use infrared technology to show where heat is escaping the house, are available to rent in many areas, so try one out before winterizing to know exactly what needs to be done.

Install a Source of Backup Power— Because power outages are also a concern during winter storm season, FEMA recommends investing in a source of backup power, like an automatic home standby generator from Generac, that automatically provides power for heat and electricity when there is a power outage. E-commerce has changed how consumers buy virtually everything. The use of e-commerce in health care adds efficiencies and opens new pathways to addressing the nation’s health care needs.

The cost to provide online health care services is lower; it can be excellent for the majority of minor acute or stable chronic disease care and where the underlying diagnosis is rarely in question.

Given the breadth of current technology, it will become common to communicate with a provider through a secure, handheld device such as a smartphone.

The mobile device is one of the most important and cost-effective health care tools. “mHealth” is the term used for delivery of health care products or services through mobile devices. The value of mHealth is accessibility, since it’s available to everyone with a smartphone. While tele-health is valuable, it attempts to re-create the medical office online. At a time when primary care providers are simply besieged, the efficiency and effectiveness of mHealth can help them address many patients’ needs.

Dr. William C. Thornbury, Jr. (Doc), a primary care physician who practices in south central Kentucky, is pioneering this effort. About four years ago, when looking at the challenge of health delivery in his rural practice, he didn’t kick the can down the road; rather, he asked, “Why not pioneer a solution?” His team developed “house call via smartphone.” He did this to maintain the relationship with his established patients and improve their access to care.

Their solution: meVisit (which stands for mobile e-Visit), a technology designed by a doctor for use by doctors. meVisit is a mobile model engineered to provide a secure encounter in three to five minutes, the time deemed necessary to keep a physician engaged and the service sustainable. Doc quickly realized that meVisit was more comprehensive than office notes. It was the second generation of telehealth.

Doc came to understand that the difference between mHealth and traditional telemedicine was efficiency. Mobility allowed the encounter to follow the clinician. An immediate response wasn’t necessary in most cases. Turnaround time

More Action Needed To End Pet Homelessness (NAPSI)—There appears to be a significant difference between what many people offer as their opinion about pet homelessness and what, if anything, they do about the problem.

That’s a key finding of a recent survey that revealed that although a growing number of those surveyed say they care about pet homelessness, more than half—many of them pet lovers—still don’t provide any support to address the issue.

In addition, the survey—Pet Smart Charities 2014 U.S. Shelter Pet Report—showed that most of those polled (85 percent) underestimate the number of pets who are euthanized annually in the United States. Experts say approximately 4 million pets are euthanized every year—or 11,000 pets daily—because there are not enough homes.

The study also found that among new pet owners the main barrier to adoption was that people said shelters did not have the type of pet they desired, with 34 percent wanting a purebred pet.

This suggests that people are unaware of breed-specific rescue groups.

In fact, one in four pets available in U.S. shelters and rescue groups is a purebred.

When it comes to spay/neuter procedures, there is also confusion. For example, fewer than half of pet parents queried knew that low-cost spay/neuter options are available.

That, say experts, may present a problem, given that 30 percent of people whose pets were unaltered said they chose not to spay/neuter because it was too expensive.

Fortunately, PetSmart Charities believes these problems can be addressed through simple steps and more education. It suggests the following: • Adopt your next pet: Seek out animal shelters and even breed-specific rescue groups. There are also online resources for shelters that allow filter-

ing by breed or type of pet to make the search easy.

• Get your pet fixed: There are many low-cost options available. This helps to prevent unplanned litters.

• Spread the word: Helping other pet lovers to get more involved with local shelters and rescues increases the chances of other pets finding a lifelong, loving home.

• Donate to animal welfare organizations: PetSmart Charities funds thou-

sands of local animal welfare groups that offer adoption and spay/neuter programs in communities throughout North America.

PetSmart Charities 2014 U.S. Shelter Pet Report is based on a survey of 2,800 adults, with and without pets, conducted in July 2014 using research firm Ipsos MarketQuest.

Empowering Parents To Manage Their Kids’ Wireless Use (NAPSI)—Today’s tech-savvy generation quickly adapts and enjoys using mobile devices such as cell phones, smartphones and tablets to communicate, learn and play, anytime and anywhere.

To help parents manage their kids’ usage and encourage responsible behavior, CTIA—The Wireless Association, which represents the wireless industry, developed GrowingWireless.com, a website developed by parents in the wireless industry for parents who need easy-to-understand information and resources.

Updated regularly, the website offers examples of situations and how parents may want to respond; for example, what parents can do if their child is being bullied, how to protect their privacy and how to manage their kids’ monthly usage so they don’t go over the allotted monthly limits in the Dollars and Sense section.

Jamaican Chicken & Couscous Servings: 4 2 tablespoons dry Jamaican seasoning 1 tablespoon curry powder 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1 cup canned Dole Pineapple Juice 1/4 cup water 1 package (5.6 ounces) toasted pine nut couscous mix 1 1/2 cups Dole Frozen Mango Chunks, thawed 1/3 cup green onion, sliced 1 tablespoon lime juice 2 teaspoons black sesame seeds

Combine Jamaican seasoning and curry powder in small bowl.

Place each chicken breast between 2 sheets of plastic wrap and pound (with meat mallet) to 1/4-inch thickness.

Remove wrap. Brush both sides of chicken pieces with 1 tablespoon oil and sprinkle both sides with curry mixture.

Cook chicken in oil over mediumhigh heat, 3 to 4 minutes per side or until brown and no longer pink in center.

Meanwhile, stir together juice, water and pine nut seasoning mixture from package in medium saucepan; bring to boil. Stir in couscous; remove from heat. Let stand, covered, 5 minutes or until liquid is absorbed. Fluff with fork. Stir in mango chunks, green onions and lime juice.

Cut chicken in 1/2-inch slices and serve over couscous mixture. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Pineapple Pumpkin Pie Servings: 6 1 can (8 ounces) Dole Crushed Pineapple 1 1/2 cups canned Dole Pineapple Juice 1 envelope unflavored gelatin 1 1/2 teaspoons granulated Sucralose sweetener or sugar 1 cup canned pumpkin pie mix 1 cup thawed whipped topping 1 (9-inch) low-fat graham cracker pie crust Ground cinnamon, optional Drain pineapple well; reserve juice.

Combine reserved juice with pineapple juice in measuring cup. Add water to make 2 cups.

Combine juice mixture and gelatin in saucepan. Let stand 1 minute. Stir over low heat until completely dissolved. Stir in sweetener.

Pour into bowl. Chill just until starts to set, about 1 hour.

Fold in pineapple, pumpkin and whipped topping. Pour into graham cracker crust. Chill 5 hours or overnight.

Serve with whipped topping and ground cinnamon, if desired.

Pineapple Upside Down Mocktail Servings: 2 (3/4-cup) 1 cup canned Dole Pineapple Juice, chilled 1 tablespoon caramel sauce Ginger ale, chilled 2 teaspoons grenadine syrup Brown or turbinado sugar and maraschino cherries, optional garnish Wet just the rim of a martini glass with a little water; dip rim in brown sugar or turbinado sugar for added garnish.

Combine pineapple juice and caramel sauce in shaker over ice. Shake vigorously; strain into martini glasses or other favorite glasses.

Top off with ginger ale. Slowly pour in grenadine. Garnish with cherry, if desired.

Note: For alcoholic variation, combine 3 ounces cake-flavored vodka or vanilla vodka, 1 ounce Frangelico or amaretto liqueur, and 6 ounces canned Dole Pineapple Juice in shaker over ice. Shake vigorously; strain into martini glasses. Slowly pour in grenadine; garnish with cherry, if desired.

Holiday Kale Salad Servings: 4 1 package (4.5 ounces) Dole Baby Kale and Greens 2 ripe firm pears, halved, cored and sliced 1/2 cup red onion, thinly sliced 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup pistachios, chopped 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup canned Dole Pineapple Juice

1 teaspoon minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger Salt and ground black pepper, to taste Combine salad blend, pears, red onion, cranberries and pistachios in large bowl.

Whisk together olive oil, pineapple juice, garlic and ginger in small bowl.

Add salt and pepper to taste. Pour over salad mixture; toss to evenly coat.

Poaching pears is the perfect way to get creative with this cold weather staple. It turns firmer pears into a tender treat and infuses them with subtle, sweet flavors and spices, which are absorbed during this easy and gentle simmering process. In this recipe, coconut milk as the cooking liquid and star anise as the spice come together to create a simple but indescribably delicious sauce for classic poached pears. Dish up as a dessert or a filling breakfast with granola and protein-rich Greek yogurt.

Creamy Coconut and Star Anise Poached Pears with Greek Yogurt and Granola Preparation time: 25 minutes Serves six Ingredients 3 firm USA Pears, such as Bosc, Anjou, Red Anjou or Concorde 2 cans (14 ounces each) coconut milk ½ cup packed dark brown sugar 3 whole star anise pods 2 cups Greek yogurt, divided 1 cup granola, divided Preparation:Peel and halve the pears, and scoop out their cores using a spoon. In a medium saucepan over low heat, warm coconut milk, sugar and anise until sugar is dissolved. Submerge the pears in the coconut milk. Cover and cook for 20-25 minutes, keeping the heat at low to prevent burning the coconut milk, until the pears are just tender when pierced with a fork.

Gently stir the mixture every 8-10 minutes to prevent scorching. Once tender, remove the pears and let cool slightly. Remove the sweetened, spiced coconut milk from heat and set aside.

Spoon 1/3 cup Greek yogurt into 6 serving bowls, and sprinkle 2 tablespoons of granola atop each bowl. Place one poached pear half in each bowl. Spoon 1 tablespoon of the poaching sauce over the top and serve. Refrigerate any leftover pears in the reserved coconut milk.

Hearty Chicken & Vegetable Chowder Prep time: 15 minutes Total time: 1 hour Servings: 6 1 tablespoon canola oil 1 large onion, minced (about 1 cup) 1 clove garlic, minced 1 can (10 3/4 ounces) Campbell’s® Healthy Request® Condensed Healthy Request® Cream of Celery Soup 1 cup nonfat milk 1 cup water 2 medium red potatoes, diced (about 2 cups) 1 large zucchini, diced (about 1 1/2 cups) 1 cup whole kernel corn 2 cups diced cooked chicken 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley Heat oil in 4-quart saucepan over mediumhigh heat. Season chicken with chili powder mixture. Heat oil in 12inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken and cook for 6 minutes or until browned on both sides. Add garlic and onions and cook; stir for 1 minute. Stir in soup, picante sauce and water and heat to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Add beans and corn. Cover and cook for 15 minutes or until chicken is cooked through. Sprinkle with cilantro.

Hearty Chicken & Vegetable Chowder

Easy Chicken Shepard’s Pie Prep time: 15 minutes Total time: 1 hour 10 minutes Servings: 4 1 can (10 3/4 ounces) Campbell’s® Healthy Request® Condensed Healthy Request® Cream of Mushroom Soup 1 1/4 cups water 1 1/4 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, cut into 1-inch pieces 3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning, crushed 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 package (16 ounces) frozen mixed vegetables, thawed 1 cup instant mashed potato flakes 1 cup fat free evaporated milk 1/4 cup shredded 2% milk Cheddar cheese

Heat oven to 350°F. Stir soup and 1/4 cup water in large bowl. Season chicken with 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, onion powder and poultry seasoning. Heat oil in 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken and cook until well browned, stirring occasionally. Add chicken and vegetables to soup mixture and stir to coat. Spoon chicken mixture into 2-quart round casserole. Microwave remaining water in microwavable bowl on HIGH for 1 to 2 minutes or until hot. Add potato flakes and stir until water is absorbed. Stir in milk and remaining black pepper. Loosely cover and microwave on HIGH for 2 minutes or until mixture is hot. Spread potato mixture over chicken mixture.

Sprinkle with cheese. Bake for 40 minutes or until chicken mixture is hot and bubbling.
