Participate In End Of Summer Pool Tournament Scope The Competition

These members of the STEPS Drop In Center participated in this year’s end of the summer pool tournament. The Bo Bo Crowley/Joe Lee team took first place, The Bill Whitney/ Dave VanTassel team took second place, and the Victor Lee/Jimmy Carlson Team took third place. STEPS is a mental health consumer-run program that offers social and recreational activities to community residents receiving mental health services. A Board of Directors comprised of consumer members governs the organization where the following takes place in addition to pool tournaments: air hockey, monthly bingo, weekly/ holiday dinners, computer with internet access and E-mail capabilities, monthly/weekly community activities such as leather working and floral design, monthly family day, monthly free pizza night, variety of board games, and monthly membership meetings.

LOCAL & AREA NEWS Oil Museum To Host Creative Writing PennDOT Issues Update For Route 6 Project Sporting Clays Shoot Workshop In Coudersport (Bradford, PA) The Penn Brad Oil MuOffered At Library Dependent on weather, area drivers can seum, will host a Sporting Clays shoot at the Bradford Gun Club located on West Warren Road, Lewis Run, PA, on Saturday, September 9, 2017.

Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. Registration is $125 per person which includes breakfast, fifty shotgun shells, use of the sporting clays course and lunch. Prizes will be awarded to top shooters.

There will be 10 sporting clays stations. We are seeking sponsors for the stations and the event. Station sponsorships are $250 each. Event Sponsorship is $1,000 and includes two (2) registrations; Lunch sponsorship is $500 and includes a single registration; Breakfast sponsorship is $250.

expect the following activity over the next two weeks: • On September 6, Chestnut Street will be open to two-way traffic and Route 6 westbound traffic will continue to be detoured onto First Street, West Street, and Eulalia Street. Route 6 eastbound traffic will be detoured onto Oak Street and Mill Street.

• The week of September 4, construction will begin on the eastbound lane of Second Street between Main Street and Ludwig Lane. Completion of the eastbound lane is expected by October 2, at which time construction on the westbound lane will begin.

Impacts to parking in the downtown area continue, with fewer spaces than normal available. Drivers should remain prepared for travel delays in and around Coudersport.

The work zone stretches along Route 6 from West Street to Ludwig Lane. Overall work includes roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements, bridge rehabilitation, traffic signal upgrades, water line relocation, pavement markings, and miscellaneous items.

We stopped at two locations this past weekend where we collected the photos for this edition of the Bradford Journal.

The first was that of the Alissa Cameron Memorial Softball Tournament held at the Gleason Complex athletic fields at UPB. According to the head organizer, Leanna Cameron, 14 teams were scheduled to play, with the proceeds of $200 per team along with other generous contributions scheduled to be distributed equally between the UPB athletic department and the Alissa Cameron Scholarship fund at the school. This was the third year for the tournament that was well supported by friends, local businesses, university sororities, fraternities, and others. And we should also mention that, at the time we arrived, players were on the field doing their stuff, even though it was raining. Talk about zealous participants……..The next stop was at the STEPS Drop In Center where we captured the first three place winners of their pool tournament, among others……..Remember that the Bradford VFW Post 212 Auxiliary Memorial Bike Run is scheduled for this weekend, Saturday, September 9th. Registration begins at 11:00 AM with the Run beginning at 12:00 Noon. ……..It’s time to gather your friends and begin enjoying a night or two bowling each week. Leagues are beginning at the Byllye Lanes in Bradford so stop in, or give them a call to sign up. Starting dates are September 10th through the 22nd for couples, men’s, split fun 4 person, and double leagues.

Guest Columnist “Nihilism Rising” -by Bob Perry

Nihilism (the belief that traditional moral, ideas and beliefs have no value; a rejection of all religious morals and principles; life is meaningless) is noticeably on the increase.

This is an ultimate conclusion that expresses hopelessness and total despair.

Leading up to this phenomenon has roots in the educational system as it has increasingly pushing the idea that anyone who is denied all they want they are in someway a victim. All who identify as being a victim increasingly lose hope as they witness so many who are succeeding in ways they use to dream of. As hope disappears religious attraction is reduced as hope of salvation is a thought that becomes not relevant in this human experience. Along with the rejection of religious relevance rejection of political relevance is gaining a strong foothold. Extreme pessimism along with radical skepticism is flourishing in the reporting of ‘fake news’ which in turn explodes through social media as postings and re-postings connect to emotional and illogical tendencies a growing number of people have and acquire. The impulse to destroy is visibly witnessed as news cycles are filled with radicals work to tear down and remove long standing historical figures and institutions. In the process of becoming a true nihilist individuals revert to having no loyalties and believing in nothing. Forever seemingly

there has existed the haves and the havenots. The haves live by a different set of rules and the advancing disclosure of this reality here in our Democratic Republic is having a destructive effect which may result in a civil war which may tear our country apart. There are human crisis all around the world but a society that has farther to fall would most likely produce an unprecedented crisis. Unwittingly, education and political realities are popularizing the tenets of nihilism. Remove the tenets, discipline and promise of salvation in life after life of religious ideology and the tenets of nihilism is sure to grow. Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is most associated with nihilism and argued eventually the destructive effects of it would eventually destroy all religious, ethical, moral and metaphysical convictions leading to indifference and destruction. The way out of this direction requires major events which brings people together such as Hurricane Harvey which produced such devastation it awakened the news media to report ’real news’ of the event and awakened some to the reality of others. Helping victims of events like this helps remove some individuals from self-identifying as a victim.

Education, being a major contributor to the growing nihilism, necessarily need to focus on teaching the ’how to think’ and eliminating the ’what to think’ and ‘how to feel’.

Brie Lara Belts Out The National Anthem

have sensed something was wrong with our world when we awoke to a front-page newspaper article about Bradford’s overzealous policeman, Officer Matt Gustin, who we know as the officer who gave us a ticket for going through an improperly functioning traffic light seven years ago. It brought up the whole scenario of traffic court amidst the other tensions of late October: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, with taxes due in mid-December too. And we remember his partner, Officer Kevin Shaffer who joined in on the courtroom fun. We had almost forgotten the incident by late afternoon, but on reading today’s mail we found not one, but two surprise tickets for alleged passing violations, that occurred 1 minute apart, and written unbeknownst to us, three weeks ago by an off-duty poBradford Journal Photo lice officer, the same Kevin Shaffer, a neighbor of ours, who had reported our Brie Lara, volunteering as an umpire for the Third Annual Alissa Cameron memorial driving behavior to his friends in the Softball Tournament, September 2nd, takes some time during the memorial service for Alissa to belt out the National Anthem from the entertainment tent. Jean Treat (PORT ALLEGANY) — Jean A. Treat, 90, of West River Road, Portville, N.Y., formerly of Port A l l e g a n y , passed away Sunday (Aug. 27, 2017) in L a k e v i e w Senior Care & Living Center, Smethport.

Born June 28, 1927, in Port Allegany, she was a daughter of Lawrence and Florence DeLong Manning.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Treat, in 1964, and longtime companion, Donald W. Cherry, in 1986.

Jean had worked as a secretary for D.W. Cherry Trucking Co., Port Allegany, and most recently with Cox Busing, Port Allegany, before her retirement.

She was a former member of the VFW Auxiliary, Port Allegany.

Surviving are a daughter, Darlene E. (Arthur) Milne of Portville, N.Y.; a son, Phillip A. Treat of Newark, Ohio; five grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; longtime companion; three brothers, Dean, Lyle and Larry Manning; and a sister, Donna E. McGarvey.

At Jean’s request, there was no visitation or funeral service.

Born May 8, 1957, in Bradford, she was a daughter of the late Gale D. and Lillian Pendleton Nichols Sr. She attended Bradford and Otto- Eldred High School and graduated in 1975.

Marilee worked at Duke Center Superette, Big Lots and as a cook at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

She spent over 20 years in Girl Scouts, as a leader of Brownies, Juniors and Cadet Troops. She was a great influence to many local girls. She was actively involved in and a Life Member of the Otto Township Volunteer Fire Department and the Ladies Auxiliary, having served as treasurer and secretary for 30 years. Marilee was an EMT, a member of the Fire Police and Relief Association; she was also a life member of the Tri-County Auxiliary.

Marilee enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading, cake decorating and catering special functions at the fire hall. She loved her cats, “Callie,” “Maxina” and “Teddy.” She was greatly loved and will be missed by family, friends and the whole community.

Surviving are her sister, Valerie L. (Michael Sullivan) Nichols of Rixford, with whom she resided; four brothers, William (Sharon) Nichols, Dennis Nichols, all of Rixford, Gale D. (Lisa) Nichols Jr., and Brian (Val) Nichols all of Duke Center; one niece, Brittany Nichols; eight nephews, Michael Wolbert, Justin, Joshua,

Ruth Holes Ruth A. Holes, 93, of Cyclone, passed away Saturday (Aug. 26, 2017) surrounded by her loving family at home.

Born Oct. 20, 1923, in Bradford, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Frederick and Flossie Husted Collins.

Ruth was a 1941 graduate of Bradford High School.

She attended Eastern Nazarene College, studied music and graduated in 1943.

On July 26, 1948, in Cumberland Md., she married Charles H. “Chuck” Holes, who died Jan. 5, 1996.

Ruth was a stay at home mom and worked a brief time at AirCo Speer.

She was a former member of First Church of the Nazarene and current member of the Hilltop Baptist Church, a member of the Red Hats and a life time member of the Hilltop Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She enjoyed knitting, Bonko, spending time at camp and with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Surviving are two daughters, Karen (Sharkie) Thomas of Cyclone and Cheryl (Mark Russell) Covert of Cyclone; one son, Bruce (Jill) Holes of Gifford; one step-daughter, Rowene Pickholtz of Merriottsville, Md.; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; one sister, Rachel Collins in New Hampshire; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Phillips

Dorothy Jane Phillips, 90, formerly of 13 N. 2nd St., Bradford, entered into heaven Thursday (Aug. 24, 2017). She had been a resident at the Bradford Ecumenical Home.

Born Sept. 11, 1926, in DuBois, she was a daughter of the late William and Celia Wilson Bowes.

She graduated from DuBois High School in 1944. After high school, she worked at Jackson China in Falls Creek, meeting her future husband there.

On July 5, 1950, in DuBois, she married Frank James Phillips, who died May 2, 1984.

She had attended East End Presbyterian Church and volunteered her time at the church thrift store. Dorothy enjoyed family camping/fishing trips to Slate Run. Later in life she enjoyed traveling out west,

particularly Las Vegas, having great times there in the company of her sisters. She also enjoyed going on cruises, gardening and making ceramics. Her favorite pastime was being a Mother and enjoying her grandchildren.

Dorothy had two dear friends: Peg King and Frances Vickery.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara (John) Couch of Bradford and Kathy Dallenbach of Erie; one son, Steven Clark Phillips of Bradford; one sister, Nancy (Ira) Reiter of DuBois; six grandchildren, Jason (Tracy) Blake, Jamie Bond, Andrea (Kenny) Distrola, Sarah (Charlie Bay) Phillips, Cara Dallenbach and Valerie (Jeff Bryant) Couch; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, whom she missed dearly; and five sisters, Lorraine, Avanell, Pauline, Marjorie and Kate.

Burial was in Willow Dale Cemetery.

Leroy Brady Leroy Frederick Brady, 55 days old, of 65 Derrick Road, passed away Thursday (Aug. 24, 2017) at Women & Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y., in his parents arms, surrounded by family.

- Article Submitted The meeting of Tops #16,( take off pounds sensibly) was held Thursday afternoon, August 31, 2017 at The First Presbyterian Church on West Corydon Street with Weigh-in from 11:30 to 12:55 and the meeting from 1 pm to 2 pm. The meeting was called to order with the Top’s and Kop’s Pledge . The song was Tops to Ole to the tune of “La Cucaracha�. Assistant Weight Recorder Barb Smead and Donna Douthit weighed 25 members with a loss of 15.9 pounds, and three staying the same. Members are to stay clear of any hard candy and this week they are to focus on their personal/SMART goals. Working to get closer to their end of year goals.

The program this week was continued with the 10 week TOPS program.

Members spoke of things that they have changed over the last few weeks and how those changes have affected them. There is only four months left in the year and the majority of the members have chosen to lose ten pounds or more for the TOPS Million Pound Challenge.

Q: I’ve heard some that some foods have “health halos.” What does that mean?

A: A food said to have a “health halo” is a food that sounds healthful or has one nutritious quality so it seems healthful in all ways, including being low in calories, when many times it is not. Sometimes a food gets a “health halo” just by being associated with a restaurant, brand or celebrity that we think of as a source of healthful food.

Some foods with “health halos” may have a healthy-sounding claim on the package such as natural, low fat or fat-free. But those terms don’t necessarily mean the food is low in sugar or calories or that it has any health benefits. Even if foods contain some healthful ingredients, it can be easy to overlook those foods’ high calorie contents. Cookies made with whole-grain flour, muffins that contain grated carrots or fruit, and snack bars that include dried fruit and nuts all contain ingredients with health value, but they also typically contain large amounts of fat, sugars or both that increase calories.

Rose Grego (OLEAN, N.Y.)— Rose Lucille Rubino Grego, 101, formerly of Olean and Bradford, PA., passed away Sunday (Aug. 27, 2017) at the Bradford Ecumenical Home in Bradford after a long illness.

Born May 19, 1916, in Bradford, she was the daughter of Michael and Mary Pascarella Rubino. On July 22, 1944, at St. Francis Church in Hillsgrove, R.I., she married her husband of almost 68 years, James J. Grego Sr. He predeceased her on April 23, 2012.

Rose attended Olean Public School #10, Olean High School, Westbrook Academy and Geneseo State College of Arts.

She worked at the Boliva Watch Co. in Providence, R.I., was a dental technician at General Hospital at the Army Air Base in Charleston, S.C., and was an elevator operator at the former First National Bank and Exchange National Bank in Olean.

She was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church until she moved to Cranberry Road in October of 1959, when she became a member of St. Bonaventure Parish. She was active with the Altar and Rosary Society and the BonaFest and church maintenance committees. She served as chairperson of the Community Directory of Catholic Charities Appeal from 1979 to 1995 and was the recipient of the “St. Joseph the Worker” Lay Award from the (Continued on page 10 )

She also served several years as a volunteer for the Red Cross Bloodmobile and for the Special Olympics held at St. Bonaventure University. Additionally, she enjoyed membership in Sixty Plus of Allegany, was the past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Allegany Council #1220 Knights of Columbus, and from 1988 to 2011 she served with her husband on the Sunshine and Bereavement committee for the Dresser Clark Office of Retirees.

Rose enjoyed dancing, especially at the church festivals, playing solitaire, bowling, working on crossword puzzles, walking at the Olean Center Mall and the old Allegany High School gym, and visiting patients at the hospital and nursing homes.

She especially loved being with her family.

She entered Eden Heights in Olean in June of 2012 and moved to the Bradford Ecumenical Home in May 2014, where she presently resided.

She is survived by three sons, James (Rosemary) Grego Jr. of Hilton, John Grego of Rochester and Robert (Patricia) Grego of Brockport/The Villages, Fla.; a daughter, Pamela (John) Caldwell of Portville; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren plus one on the way; a brother-in-law, Quido Ramire of Olean; many nieces, nephews and cousins and close friends Jack and Louise Croft of Olean.

Slow Cooked “Pulled” Chicken Tacos Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 2 hours Servings: 5 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs 1 bottle (8 ounces) Ortega Chipotle Taco Sauce 1/2 cup chicken stock 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 package (10 shells) Ortega Good Grains White Corn with Chia Taco Shells, warmed taco toppings In medium pan, combine chicken, taco sauce, chicken stock, salt and pepper, and cook on low, covered, approximately 2 hours, or until internal temperature of chicken reaches 165 F. Turn heat to medium-high and reduce cooking liquid into thick sauce, cooking 3-5 minutes and stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat and combine sauce with shredded chicken.

Serve in taco shells with desired taco toppings.

Baja Chicken Pizza Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Servings: 5

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, about 1 pound 1 bottle (8 ounces) Ortega Green Taco Sauce 1 can Ortega Vegetarian Refried Beans 3/4 cup Ortega Homestyle Salsa (any variety) 1 Mama Mary’s prepared pizza crust 1 red bell pepper, diced 1 can (4 ounces) Ortega Diced Green Chiles 1 bag (8 ounces) Mexicanstyle shredded cheese 1 bottle (8 ounces) Ortega Original Taco Sauce (any variety) 1 bag Ortega Crispy Onion Taco Toppers In large bowl or re-sealable plastic bag, combine chicken breasts with green taco sauce. Stir or shake to coat. Marinate at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours.

Heat oven to 350 F. Bake chicken 15-20 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 165 F. Let chicken cool 10 minutes then cut into small cubes.

In medium bowl, combine refried beans and salsa.

Transfer prepared pizza crust to baking sheet.

Spread bean mixture over dough, leaving 1/4 inch at edges for crust.

Top with peppers, green chiles, chicken and cheese. Bake 10-15 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and cheese is melted.

Top with taco sauce and crispy onion toppers then serve.

Mexican Style “Totchos” Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes Servings: 5 1 1 1/2 1 1 16 2 1 1

Prepare tater tots according to package directions.

Heat medium skillet over medium heat. Cook ground beef 4-5 minutes until browned, using wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Add taco seasoning and water. Cook until water evaporates and sauce is thickened.

Top hot tater tots with cooked ground beef and cheese, and broil in oven 5 minutes.

Top with tomatoes, sour cream and crispy jalapeno toppers, and serve immediately.

Arnold Ruffner (SMETHPORT) — Arnold E. “Boots” Ruffner, 79, of Cyclone, died Friday (Aug. 25, 2017) in the Sena Kean Manor, Smethport.

He was born May 18, 1938, in Rimersburg, a son of Arnold and Sara Space Ruffner. Mr. Ruffner was a graduate of Rimersburg High School.

He went on to serve in the U.S. Army.

He worked in the local oil fields for many years.

He was a devoted member of the Valley Worship Center of Farmers Valley.

Sue enjoyed a multitude of hobbies, including riding motorcycles, doing karate, making pottery, car ice racing, ice fishing, kayaking, cycling and jet skiing. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her mother who passed away in 2012. They were best friends. Like her mom, she enjoyed bird watching from her back window and fed her birds year round. She also had a special place in her heart for eagles.

Sue was a Green Bay Packers fan who joined her brother Lance in cheering the Packers to victory. Her cats were a second family and gave her many years of joy.

They will miss her more than humans can understand. To her, they were her children.

She had a kind heart and always tried to help those who became her friends. Sue made the world a better place for those who knew her.

Sue is survived by her father, Guy E. Wilson of Bradford; her brothers, Lance P. Wilson of Bradford, Lee E. Wilson of Lakewood, N.Y., Chauncey E. (Penny) Wilson of Wayland, Mass., and numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Rosamond Blaski (ELDRED) — Rosamond C. Blaski, 79, passed away on Wednesday (Aug. 30, 2017) in the Sena Kean Manor in Smethport after a three-year battle with cancer.

She was born on March 11, 1938, in Elkland, a daughter of Cletus and Nell Salisbury Cott.

On Sept. 5, 1981, in Eldred, she married Donald Blaski, who passed away on Aug. 14, 1999.

Rose was a 1957 graduate of OttoEldred High School and had resided in Duke Center, Warren and Russell before moving to Eldred in 1976. Along with her husband, she had owned and operated the American Awning and Insulation Company in Eldred.

Rose was a member of the Eldred United Methodist Church and the Keystone Chapter No. 2 Order of the Eastern Star of Duke Center and the Lady Rebecca Lodge No. 526 of Eldred, and over the years had been active with the Eldred Area Lions Club. Rose had enjoyed her numerous trips to Florida with her husband, she also enjoyed needlepoint, knitting, doing crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles.

Rose will be dearly missed by her family and is survived by daughters from a

previous marriage, Terri (Munir) Chavla of Washington, Pa., and Lana (Rodger) Tripp of Eldred; granddaughters, Aubrey Cook of Columbus, Ohio, Andrea (Mike) DeEmilio of Manassas, Va., Erica Austin of Eldred, Leah (husband Dave Cooper) Chavla of Washington, D.C., and Sidra Chavla of Pittsburgh; and four greatgrandchildren. Also surviving are half brothers, Donald (Brenda) Clark of Rochester, N.Y., Carl (Jean) Clark of Lancaster, N.Y., and Dennis (Nancy) Clark of Arcade, N.Y., and a half sister, Laureen Clark of West Clarksville, N.Y. She is preceded in death by her beloved sister, Alpha Husted (formerly of Eldred) who passed away on June 26, 2017.

Ten Years After The Financial Crisis, Boomers Struggle To Define Retirement

(NAPSI)—If you or someone you care about is among the nation’s estimated 76 million baby boomers entering or preparing for retirement, coping with the fallout from the subprime mortgage crisis that began in 2007 and triggered the Great Recession is probably still an issue.

As the crisis cut into boomers’ net worth and lowered the value of their homes, their confidence in achieving a personally satisfying retirement dropped significantly, according to the Bankers Life Center for a Secure Retirement. Today, only 37 percent of boomers are certain they will have a personally satisfying retirement, down from 44 percent before the crisis.

Even before the crash, middle-income boomers were grappling with a “new retirement” stemming from changes to their retirement programs, as employers shifted away from defined benefit plans such as pensions to defined contribution plans like 401(k) plans. With their confidence shaken, boomers are further redefining retirement.

What does this “new” retirement look

like? Boomers surveyed by Bankers Life say they have lowered their overall expectations for financial independence in retirement, compared to before the crisis.

The study reports that only: • 34 percent expect to retire debt free • 19 percent expect to pay off their mortgage • 16 percent expect to pass an inheritance to heirs.

So what can you do to help restore your confidence that a personally satisfying retirement is possible? Here are three good ideas: 1. Understand what your retirement really looks like. Look to increase your financial independence by: • Paying off debt: Debt payments should ideally be no more than 10 percent of your income when you retire • Working part-time: Whether you work full-time, part-time or seasonally, employment income will relieve pressure on your other sources of income.

2. Plan for the unexpected. Only

have built up an emergency fund since the start of the financial crisis. Plan for any unexpected costs that can arise in retirement, such as long-term care or critical illness.

3. Allow an expert to support your investment plan. One-quarter of middleincome boomers report they no longer invest because of the crisis. Whether you want to resume investing or simply create a savings plan, consider working with a financial professional, especially if you don’t think you have the financial resources to live comfortably in retirement.

Don’t Leave Your Family With An Unwanted Inheritance

(NAPSI)—If you or someone you care about is among America’s estimated 75 million baby boomers, there are a few financial facts and figures you should know.

For one thing, middle-income boomers are carrying more debt into retirement than ever before. So what happens to financial obligations after death? Life insurance not only helps provide your surviving family members an income after you pass away, but can also be used to pay off debts.

According to a recent study commissioned

by Bankers Life Center for a Secure Retirement, middle-income boomers have lowered their overall expectation for financial independence in retirement since the onset of the financial crisis in 2007. Ten years later, fewer boomers expect they will retire debt free (34 percent today, down from 45 percent before the crisis) and fewer have paid off their mortgages (19 percent, down from 25 percent).

If you have enough assets to cover your debt when you pass away, creditors will receive their due from your estate. However, it matters whether your home is your primary asset and whether your spouse or another family member is a co-applicant or co-signer on an account. Your mortgage and other debts, such as credit card bills or car loans, could fall to them.

Proceeds from life insurance can be used to pay down your mortgage and debts, as well as help pay for funerals and other final expenses.

“Carrying debt in your retirement years is very common today, and life insurance can help provide peace of mind that your family’s comfort and security are provided for,” explained Scott Goldberg, president of Bankers Life. “Boomers should do a complete inventory of their finances and debt, weigh their options, and find a life insurance policy that will help ease any potential financial burdens upon death.”

Here are four tips to help you figure out whether purchasing life insurance is right for you: 1. Determine your need: Does someone depend on you financially? Are you lacking the funds to cover your final expenses? If yes, consider life insurance to help protect your family’s future. A beneficiary can use the money for living expenses or to pay off debts.

2. Understand the different types of life insurance: There are three major types of life insurance coverage: term life, whole life and universal life. All three types pay a death benefit but each can differ in terms of coverage length, premium flexibility, cash value accumulation and distribution, and other factors.

3. Decide how much life insurance you need: How much coverage would your family need if something happened to you? What expenses need to be covered or debts paid off? How much is set aside for savings? The answers will help you determine the type and amount of life insurance you’ll need.

4. Consider seeking professional guidance: Options are available for nearly any income and asset level, age and risk tolerance. An insurance professional can help you evaluate your life insurance options and costs based on your needs and circumstances.

hile school safety is of the utmost importance to parents, millions of school-age children begin and end their days with a bus ride. To provide some measures for parents to help increase safety going to and from the bus and during the ride, the National Association for Pupil Transportation offers these tips.

Ensure backpacks are packed securely so papers and other items don’t scatter as the bus approaches.

Create a morning routine that puts kids at the bus stop five minutes before the scheduled pickup time. This helps avoid a last-minute rush, when safety lessons are easily forgotten, and ensures kids are safely in place for boarding.

Encourage children to wear bright, contrasting colors so they can be seen easier by drivers.

Walk young children to the bus stop or encourage kids to walk in groups. There is safety in numbers; groups are easier for drivers to see.

Instruct children to walk on the sidewalk.

If there is no sidewalk, advise them to stay out of the street, walk single-file, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as possible.

If kids must cross a street, driveway or alley, remind them to stop and look both ways before crossing.

Verify that the bus stop location offers good visibility for the bus driver; if

changes are needed, talk with nearby homeowners or school district officials to implement changes. Never let kids wait in a house or car, where the driver may miss seeing them approach the bus.

Remind children that the bus stop is not a playground. Balls or other toys can roll into the street and horseplay could result in falling into the path of oncoming traffic.

Instruct children to stay at least three steps away from the road and allow the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it.

When boarding the bus, items can get bumped and dropped. Caution children that before picking anything up, they should talk to the driver and follow instructions to safely retrieve their possessions.

Teach safe riding habits: stay seated with head, hands and feet inside at all times; use a seatbelt (if available); keep bags and books out of the aisle and remain seated until the bus stops moving. Also instruct children to never throw things on the bus or out the windows and to never play with or block the emergency exits.

Remind kids that yelling and other loud noises are off limits as they could distract the driver.

If cell phones and other electronic devices are permitted, instruct children to mute the sound or use headphones so as not to create a distraction for the driver or other riders.

Remind children to look before stepping off the bus. If they must cross the street, teach them to do so in front of the bus by taking five big steps from the front of the bus, making eye contact with the driver and waiting for the signal that it is safe to begin crossing.

For parents who meet their kids at the bus stop, remember that in their excitement kids may dart across the street. Eliminate the risk by waiting on the side of the street where kids exit the bus.

Make the bus ride part of your daily “how was school?” discussion. Encourage kids to talk about the things they see and hear on the bus so you can discuss appropriate behaviors and, if necessary, report any concerns to school administrators.

A Safe Transportation Option Beyond teaching safety precautions around the bus, there is another option to ensure kids are transported safely to and from school each day. Many school districts are moving away from noisy, pollutioninducing and expensive diesel buses in favor of buses powered by an alternate fuel, like propane, which offers numerous benefits for school districts and their students.

“As a former teacher, I know parents often overlook how the ride to and from school can impact a child’s performance in the classroom,” Hager said. “A child’s attitude or behavior before they arrive at school can set the tone for the whole day.”

In addition, these buses meet rigorous U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and each is equipped with an automatic shut-off feature that prevents fuel flow to the engine when not running.

Another safety consideration is the health implications of older diesel buses. The shorter height of younger students can put them face-to-face with a black cloud of diesel smoke every school day.

With propane buses, however, students aren’t exposed to the harmful particulate matter in diesel exhaust, which is known to aggravate asthma and has been identified by the World Health Organization as a carcinogen. However, “low-NOx” propane engines are 75 percent cleaner than current federal emissions standards require.

Savings: Not only is propane consistently less expensive than diesel fuel, the buses themselves don’t require the same expensive repairs and replacement parts that today’s modern diesel buses demand. Saving money on transportation costs puts schools in a better position to appropriate budget toward meeting students’ needs in the classroom and other areas, such as fine arts and athletic programs.
