The thrust of our photos this week comes from two events. First, a flagraising ceremony held September 11th at Chapel Ridge in Bradford, on what has come to be known by Presidential Proclamation and otherwise, as Patriot Day and/or National Day of Service and Remembrance in due respect for the now historic 9/11 (it’s origins and its consequences) and secondly, the equally important occasion, for those who hold old friendships and humanity close to their hearts, a 75th Birthday Party at the Bradford Club, for members of the Bradford Area High School Class of 1956 held September 11th. Our readers should remember that photos and videos of both events can be found in our photo gallery .…….

Our readers might also be interested in some of the background that made the Patriots Day, flag-raising ceremony at Chapel Ridge possible: In the beginning of September, well known veteran and social service participant, Dave Newman, during an egg delivery, ( one dozen of Sarah’s Happy Hen’s finest) speculated (as he is well known to do) with us concerning the old flag on the singular flag pole at the Chapel Ridge/Ecumenical Home campus on St. Francis Drive, Bradford. “A new flag would be nice,” he said, “and a nice time for its installation would be on Patriot’s day”. And, apparently, he went about making it happen. As he explained to us following our photo shoot of the event, Wednesday, September 11th, he began by contacting State Assembly Representative, Martin Causer to see if a flag could be made available and if his schedule was clear for a possible event. Next he checked with Becky Greenberg, Chief Activities Director of the Chapel Ridge/ Ecumenical Home campus to clear and schedule the flag-raising event with her, and finally, Dave tells us, he approached the various Veteran’s organizations to see who could provide the manpower to raise the flag, sound the taps, give the rifle salutes and otherwise perform the ceremony. Interestingly Commander Pete O’Donohoe of the Bradford American Legion Post #108 came through with the whole package. While he and Legion Adjutant Claire Butler raised the flag, Club historian Don Poleto rendered taps, and the Bradford Legion Rifle squad (comprised of Legion & Sons of the Legion members) gave the salute……Come one and all to the Comedy Night to be held at the VFW at 94 Barbour Street, Bradford, Friday, September 20th…….. Also, remember the Autumn Classic taking place at Parkway Field, Bradford, this Saturday, September 21st.

Gates will be open at 4:00 PM with opening ceremonies beginning at 5:15 PM. For more details see the complete Autumn Classic schedule page 9 in this issue.

It’s A Matter Of Opinion...

Guest Columnist “Shutdown ” The fiscal year for the federal government ends on September 30th and absent of a spending bill there will be a ‘shutdown’ of same. The only event seen as avoiding the shutdown is another ‘cankicking’ ‘continuing resolution bill’ (CR).

There is so much unfinished business in Washington that the functioning of the government may possibly collapse under the weight of it all. There is a major failure of competent leadership in both the House of Representatives and the Senate as is shown in the inability to get legislation passed in sufficient time to avoid confusion and disruption of our lives. The Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Hal Rogers, introduced a $986.6 continuing resolution to fund the government at current spending levels and advert a shutdown. The resolution does not include any language to de-fund the Affordable Care Act and the resolution will fund the government through December 15th, 2013.

The House leadership has at the same time introduced a ‘concurrent resolution’ that specifically prevents appropriations to implement the new health care law and creates the potential for a showdown that will most likely have a major effect on the 2014 elections.

October the 1st is a major date for the implementation phase of the Care Act and all those who oppose the Act see this as the last real chance for derailing the train that will surely be a wreck of catastrophic proportions. With little question there will

-by Bob Perry be an impasse between the Senate version and the House version of the appropriations bill and the Senate holds a trump card in that the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid can pass a stopgap bill void of the de-fund language.

The chances of a ‘shutdown’ looms larger at this time, but, if Senator Reid pulls the ‘procedural trick’ and the continuous resolution is made law, the democrats will feel the consequences of the voters in 2014 for there will be a resounding rejection of those who support the ill conceived Care Act.

Residents Enjoy Remembrance Ceremony

BUSINESS & PERSONAL FINANCES How To Survive An IRS Audit Few events inspire more dread than an IRS tax audit. Even if you’re confident you’ve accounted for every cent of income and only taken legitimate deductions, it’s hard not to worry what a close examination of your tax returns might uncover – not to mention the time spent tracking down old records.

Here are a few pointers to help allay your fears and better prepare in case you should ever get chosen for the dreaded IRS audit: There are three basic types of IRS audits: • Correspondence audit, which is conducted entirely by mail. You’ll receive a letter from the IRS asking for additional information about specific items on your tax return.

• Field audit, where an IRS agent comes to your home or business to examine records and observe where you work.

• Office audit, where you must be interviewed at an IRS office.

According to Chris Kollaja, a certified public accountant and partner at A.L. Nella & Company in San Francisco, California, if you’re having a correspondence audit and you feel your records are too voluminous to mail, you can request a faceto-face audit.

“You can also ask a representative, such as your accountant, tax preparer or lawyer, to help prepare for the audit and even attend it in your place, if allowed,” says Kollaja. “An experienced tax professional can tell you what to expect, guide your responses and keep the audit on track should you get tongue-tied or start sharing more than is necessary.”

The chances of being audited are low.

“Sometimes returns are randomly selected for audit, but more often it’s because something jumped out in the computer analysis each return receives,” he explains.

Common items that might trigger an audit: • Taxable income listed on your return doesn’t match amounts W-2 or 1099 forms, 401(k) plan or IRA distributions, brokerage accounts, etc.

• Taking above-average charitable deductions relative to your income.

• Deducting business meals, travel and entertainment.

• Claiming the home office deduction.

• Failure to report foreign bank account assets.

• Concealing cash income or receipts.

• Excessive cash transactions over $10,000.

• Your close relationship to another taxpayer being audited.

Kollaja recommends several ways to prepare for and attend an audit: Respond to the IRS within the stated deadline – usually 30 days.

• Organize paperwork and receipts pertinent to the issues they’ve identified.

• If you won’t have everything ready in time for the audit, contact your auditor to discuss whether it can proceed anyway, or if they’ll agree to postpone it.

• Bring or send only documentation requested in the initial notice. At an inperson audit, keep you answers brief and don’t voluntarily provide information that could launch a fishing expedition.

• If the examiner questions you on an item not mentioned in the initial notice,

you’re allowed to ask for additional time to fulfill additional requests.

• Never give original receipts to the IRS agent – they are not responsible for lost paperwork.

• You’re allowed to make an audio recording of the audit provided you sent your agent written notice 10 days before the appointment. Video recordings are not allowed.

• Always be polite. Acting belligerent or evasive can only hurt your cause.

Kollaja suggests reading IRS Publication 556 to learn more about how the audit process works and reviewing the section on itemized deductions in Publication 17, both available at www.irs.gov.

Bottom line: Think positively – you might even come out of the audit with a tax refund – it happens.

Vickie Johnson conducted the Thursday afternoon, September 5th meeting of Tops #16 at the First Presbyterian Church.

There were 27 weigh-ins with a loss of 26 3/4 pounds. The officer of week is Vickie Johnson. Losers of the week are Kelly Galloyway and Vickie Johnson. Bev Hannon gave the thought for the day: “I swear that 10 minutes talking to my dog makes me feel better than 45 minutes with my therapist.”

The forbidden food for this week is cookies.

Silvana presented those present with a card that had their weigh loss from the beginning of year.

The meeting was closed with a prayer.

New Study: 3D Finds Breast Cancers Earlier

(NAPSI)—When it comes to telling if someone has—or doesn’t have— breast cancer, three dimensions are a lot better than two, according to recent research published in the American Journal of Roentgenology.

The Research In the first large-scale U.S. study of 3D mammograms, researchers compared breast cancer screening with the addition of 3D mammograms against conventional 2D mammograms and found a significant reduction in recall rates and a sizable increase in cancer detection, particularly invasive cancer.

The study evaluated recall, cancer detection and invasive cancer detection rates in a community-based breast imaging practice. Called “Implementation of Breast Tomosynthesis in a Routine Screening Practice: An Observational Study,” it was led by Stephen L. Rose, M.D., a prominent radiologist in Houston, Texas.

The Results “Implementation of tomosynthesis in our screening practice resulted in a consistent significant improvement in performance,” the report said.

The study found the use of 3D mammograms resulted in: • A 53 percent increase in invasive cancer detection rates.

• A 37 percent drop in recall rates; that is, in patients being called back for further tests because the first result was inconclusive.

The Rose study is consistent with prior research findings, including two major European studies published in The Lancet Oncology. Both of those studies found increased cancer detection and reduced recalls.

The Reasons 3D technology allows radiologists to see breast tissue in greater detail than with 2D mammograms alone. This results in earlier detection of cancers, when they are easier to treat, and a reduction in the worrisome false positives that are more common with conventional digital mammograms.

Safety: Off The Road (NAPSI)—Whether you’re having fun on an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) or in an ROV (recreational off-highway vehicle), staying safe can be as simple as ABC and 123.

A. Learn the differences between the types of vehicles: ROVs, also called sideby-sides, have a steering wheel, acceleration foot pedal and brake foot pedal. ATVs have a handlebar for steering, a throttle controlled by a thumb lever, and hand levers and a foot pedal for the brakes. Most ATVs are designed for one rider who straddles the machine, out in the open.

With an ROV, it’s important to wear the seat belt and keep all arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times.

B. Get the size right: It’s critical that ATV riders be the right size for their machines. Children should not ride adultsized ATVs, though youth-model ATVs let kids as young as 6 enjoy riding under adult supervision. ROVs are only for operators age 16 or older with a valid driver’s license.

C. Protective gear: Riders of either vehicle need proper helmets that meet Department of Transportation standards, eye protection, gloves, long sleeves and pants, and sturdy boots. An ROV should have seat belts, a rollover protective structure, side retention features and handholds.

1. Ride right: These vehicles are for off-road use only and should be taken exclusively on designated trails.

2. Ride sober: Neither should ever be operated while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

3. Get safety trained: Both should be used only after proper training, through the ATV Safety Institute (www.atvsafety. org) or the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (www.ROHVA.org).

Family History And Screening Are Keys To Treating An Inherited Disease (NAPSI)—Information shared by family members can often serve as the first line of defense against a serious medical condition. Such shared information was key to saving the life of a young man named Matthew Ito. As a teen, Ito did all the things other 14-year-old boys did: played sports, hung out with friends, and raced dirt bikes. But around that time he also learned he had inherited a potentially deadly genetic disorder that affects 1 in 500 people.

The disorder, called Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH), affects more than 600,000 Americans, yet 80 percent of those with FH are undiagnosed and have no idea they are at risk.

When Ito was diagnosed in 1974, the medical community didn’t have ideal guidance or treatment for it. In fact, he wasn’t treated for FH until he was in his late 20s, just after statins, a class of drug used to lower cholesterol, were introduced. The only thing standing between him and a life-changing—or life—ending-heart attack was a semi-strict diet and exercise.

“When I’d go out with my friends, my mom would make me a healthy snack and everyone else would be eating hamburgers,” said Ito, now a professor of pharmacy practice at Oregon State University/ Oregon Health & Science University.

After further tests and family research, he learned that FH came from his mom’s side of the family. Both of his maternal grandparents had died from either a stroke or a heart attack. Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins have FH as well.

The consequences of FH have dramatically altered his life. Ito is in the midst of a fight against FH, not only for himself, but also for the life of his patients and his own family.

“Even though I’m being treated with statins and ezetimibe (a cholesterol absorption inhibitor), I eat an extremely healthy, low cholesterol and low sodium diet. I was undiagnosed for 14 years of my life, and it took its toll,” Ito said.

Early Diagnosis Is Key As a Doctor of Pharmacy and President of the National Lipid Association (NLA) this year, he is committed to raising awareness about this disorder. Ito wants both patients and health care providers to know exactly how important early diagnosis and treatment is, from his personal—and lifethreatening—experience.

Despite a strict diet and doing everything “by the book,” in January 2013, Ito had a massive heart attack and two weeks later underwent triple bypass surgery.

He said that he always suspected he would have a heart attack but just never knew when. “It happened when I was dirt

Family History Is Helpful Knowing his family history, Ito made sure that his now 18-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son were screened for FH, done with a simple blood test. Results showed that his daughter also inherited FH but his son did not. “Thankfully my daughter is doing well, and she is now on statins, but it’s something she will have to learn to live with and be aware of the rest of her life,” said Ito. But not many doctors do cholesterol screening on children who appear perfectly healthy, and not many children have lipidologists as fathers.

“Let’s say you get screened in your 30s and start getting aggressive treatment.

The problem is—you’ve been living with extremely high cholesterol for years, and it’s hard to reverse that,” Ito said. “Why should we wait until these patients have

That’s why it’s so difficult to diagnose—and often those with FH only get diagnosed after they’ve had a heart attack or stroke. University Uses iPads To Customize Learning (NAPSI)—Learning has gone mobile, and the students at Jackson State University (JSU) are reaping the benefits. Through the iPad Technology Advantage Scholarship Initiative (TASI), incoming full-time freshmen at JSU are each provided with the latest-generation iPad. And what do the students do with these iPads? Some pretty amazing things.

In addition to having 24/7 access to textbooks online in the form of eBooks or iBooks, students have dozens of apps that enable them to take class notes, collaborate on content, communicate via Skype, tap into resources like math reference formulas or periodic tables, learn a foreign language online, access world maps at a touch, read or listen to thousands of other books or audiobooks, use their iPad as a graphing calculator and much more. Students & Faculty Seeing Benefits Students are reporting that they are already benefiting from the technology. Michael Gordon, an 18-year-old JSU student, says the iPad helped him stay organized and created a more interesting learning environment during his first semester. “In my biology class, all our notes and presentations were online; we could go straight to it and follow the teacher,” said Gordon. He also uses his iPad to take notes, study for tests, and even to host meetings for group projects and study sessions. Stu-

dents receive training on how to use the technology to its full advantage. The eCenter also has the ability to track devices in the event they are lost or stolen.

JSU professors have bought into the iPad initiative, and more than 30 have already authored textbooks for college courses. Other course materials are under development. Faculty members are attending classes on how to use the iPads to enhance student learning, and their excitement level is tangible. “Mobile technology is growing by leaps and bounds,” says Robert Blaine, Special Assistant to the Provost for CyberLearning. “These changes in technology are having a fundamental impact on how we, as a society, interact with the world. It makes sense that universities should lead the way in terms of changing how we teach students so they will

truly be prepared to go out into the world and compete. It is a very exciting time to be an educator at JSU.” An Experiment In Learning The initiative is the result of a twoyear study that reviewed learning styles and instructional techniques, among other variables. Projects To Keep Kids Thinking Creatively (NAPSI)—There’s good news for those looking for ways to keep kids entertained after school or on the weekend. Do-it-yourself craft activities remain an excellent way to promote creative thinking even outside of the classroom.
