Located in the Santa Lucia Mountains southeast of Carmel, Big Sur Land Trust’s Mitteldorf Preserve is home to Monterey County’s largest and oldest known redwood tree dating back to 743 A.D.
Over 1,000 acres of riparian and oak woodlands, chaparral, grasslands, and a rare stand of madrone contribute to the beauty of this important watershed and habitat for several protected species. Beloved by many, Mitteldorf Preserve is often described as a magical place where a close human connection to nature happens almost instantaneously.
In 2016, during the Soberanes Fire, Mitteldorf Preserve served as a critical access point to the backcountry in and around Santa Lucia Preserve. Unfortunately, one majestic old growth redwood continued to burn several weeks after the fire had been extinguished. Eventually, the mighty redwood fell. Because the burned tree needed to be removed, Big Sur Land Trust decided to mill the wood into slabs. Eight years later, this natural, fire adapted environment is continuing to show amazing resilience. Mittledorf Preserve is an example of the immense amount of stewardship required in the after math of a fire.

• Average slab size is 103" long, 45" wide and 3" high.
• 4-mile (round-trip) guided hike to Mitteldorf Preserve to learn about the property and see the location of where this magnificent tree once stood.
