President & CEO Message

Dear Stakeholders,

Since 1968, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County have served generations of kids and teens, offering safe and inclusive spaces where youth can have fun, build essential skills, and connect with trusted adults who can help them reach their potential. The events that have taken place over the past few years have been uniquely challenging for families with limited resources. It is clear that young people need Boys & Girls Clubs now more than ever.

This annual report shares the achievements, services provided, and milestones of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County for 2023 (financials presented are for FY23, July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023). Thanks to you, this year we remained focused on the mission and delivered on our three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character and Leadership for over 6,000 Monterey County youth.

As we reflect on the accomplishments of 2023, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to you, our valued stakeholders. Your support has been instrumental in making a positive impact on the lives of Monterey County youth. Together, we are equipping young people with the 21st-century skills necessary for a future filled with productivity and success.

We invite you to review our collective achievements over the past year. With your continued support, we look forward to building on this success and creating even greater opportunities for our youth in the years to come.

MISSION, VISION & BELIEF STATEMENTS OUR APPROACH

Our Mission

To inspire and empower the youth of Monterey County to realize their full potential to become responsible, healthy, productive and successful citizens.

Our Vision

It is our goal that every child we serve performs at grade level, graduates from high school, completes post-secondary education or training, and earns a liveable wage as a productive, healthy member of their community.

We Believe

• Every child is capable of succeeding when provided safety, opportunity, and guidance.

• A single conversation or action can be a defining moment in a child’s life.

• It is our responsibility to hold every child high and believe in their success.

• Ongoing investment in our staff is a critical component to the future success of a child.

• We must collaborate and partner with our families, schools and community to help children succeed.

Since 1968, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County have been pivotal in shaping “Great Futures” for countless youth. Through a comprehensive suite of programs, we focus on fostering three key outcomes: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character and Leadership. Our dedicated youth development professionals nurture ongoing, caring relationships with our young members. They are committed to developing good character, instilling in each child a profound sense of belonging, competence and usefulness. This dedication ensures that every child steps into the future equipped with the skills and confidence necessary for success in the 21st Century.

SERVING THE NEEDS OF MONTEREY COUNTY YOUTH

Every child deserves a nurturing, affirmative, and welcoming space where they can achieve their fullest potential. We believe children should have equal access to experiences and resources that give them every opportunity in life.

ETHNIC BREAKDOWN

Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County serves youth from all backgrounds throughout Monterey County.

Just over half of California students, 51.1%, in third through 11th grade, met or exceeded reading and writing standardized test standards for the 2018-2019 school year. Monterey County was below the state average, with just 39.8% of students meeting or exceeding standards.

In our Monterey County community, 12.1% live in poverty, with the impact being more pronounced on children under 18, as 14.2% of them live below the poverty threshold. *

We place a high emphasis on education and last year 100% of our Club members graduated from high school. 85% of Monterey County students graduate from high school.

At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, we bridge the widening educational divide, offering a secure environment, nurturing mentors, and transformative programs that enable our youth to flourish.

READ NATURALLY GIRLS’ HEALTH IN GIRLS’ HANDS

The Read Naturally program is a cornerstone of our literacy initiatives, skillfully combining teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring to boost reading achievements. Tailored to each student’s unique pace, our dedicated staff employ a blend of text and audio tools to facilitate comprehension and fluency. This personalized approach ensures that students not only read along with a narrator, but also develop the ability to understand and fluently articulate the stories independently.

In the past year, this program saw remarkable participation with 205 young members reading a total of 1,438 stories. Notably, there was an average increase in oral fluency by 38 words per minute.

Success Story

One of our shining stars, Aniyah M., a 2nd grader, joined Read Naturally in fall 2022. Starting with a reading rate of 46 words per minute, Aniyah embraced the challenge of reaching 100 words per minute by the end of spring. Her determination and hard work paid off, as she successfully completed the program in spring 2023 with an impressive rate of 111 words per minute.

I am so proud of myself. I like being a top reader in my class!”- 2nd grade member, Aniyah

Girls’ Health in Girls’ Hands (GHGH), a signature program of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, had a transformative impact on the lives of 446 young individuals in Monterey County in 2023. Originally launched 13 years ago by the Community Foundation for Monterey County and the Women’s Fund, GHGH addresses women’s health issues and fosters girls’ leadership. Catering to girls ages 8-18, the program nurtures resilience, compassion, and authenticity, empowering girls to advocate for their health and affect positive change in their schools and communities.

Event Highlight:

Adding to GHGH’s accomplishments, the 2023 Annual Health, Leadership, and Advocacy Summit, themed “LeadHer,” was held on February 5, 2023. This summit featured workshops on Healthy Relationships, Creating Boundaries/ Saying No, Healthy Eating, Health and Wellness, and Gender Identity. It was a resounding success, uniting 208 girls from eight cities across Monterey County. Surveys revealed that 81% of attendees felt the Summit met or exceeded expectations, and over 80% gained a better understanding of girls’ specific health needs in Monter

This program offers me the chance to contribute to something greater than just my high school experience. It broadens my horizons, enabling me to develop ideas that benefit my community, enrich my life, and positively affect the lives of others.”- GHGH Program Participant

For the first time, thirteen incredible summer camps and clinics were offered to Monterey County youth. Summer Clinics included Ballet Folklorico, Basketball, Tennis, and so much more.

FOOTBALL CAMP

This four-day, non-contact football camp held at Monterey Peninsula College is a key part of our Healthy Lifestyles initiative. The camp was led by Ron Johnson, Anthony Toney, and ML Carter (former NFL players). Offering a mix of activities including skills stations, team-building games, and inspiring guest speakers, the camp emphasized healthy habits, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Herm Edwards, reflecting on the camp’s legacy, expresses his satisfaction, saying “I’m glad we are continuing the tradition.
