GUT’s ‘Handshake Hunt’ seals deal with Media Grand Prix SPECSAVER

THE WINNER of the 2024 Media Grand Prix is ‘Handshake Hunt’, an innovative campaign for Mercado Libre created by GUT, Sao Paulo. It used the retailer’s handshake logo to cut through the marketing noise of Black Friday, crafting discounts tied to moments where people shook hands during shows on TV channel Globo.

In a week, more than 50 million discount vouchers were given away, helping Mercado Libre to its most successful Black Friday ever.

Jury President Prerna Mehrotra, of Dentsu, APAC, said that the campaign was seen by jurors as pointing to the future of media.

“The idea really proves that a strong insight can lead technology to really reinvent

what television would look like,” Mehrotra said.

“Black Friday is a really cluttered environment, and we thought it was a really smart use of insight and technology, and a great way to drive participation.”

Technology was a big trend across this year’s entries in the Media Lions, but it was

not a dominant force.

“Technology was invisible, but it delivered visible delight,” Mehrotra said. “We didn’t see technology, but we could feel it, and that for me was beautiful.”

The Jury also awarded Gold Lions to two more campaigns from Brazil, as well as the US (2), Germany, the UK, France, Canada, Peru and a joint Germany/US project.

Mehrotra said that the judging process highlighted the trend for brands to loosen up in their approach to their audiences.

“Consumers do expect brands to have a voice,” she said, citing projects where “brands had the confidence to spark a very light-hearted moment, make it so meaningful, and respond to consumers in real-time with that.”

Ogilvy sweeps Social & Influencer

AN INFLUENCER -driven conspiracy theory that actor Michael Cera was the secret brains behind moisturising lotion CeraVe turned out to be a Super Bowl campaign — and now it’s a Grand Prix winner at Cannes Lions.

Ogilvy PR, New York took the top prize in the Social & Influencer category for the ‘CeraVe’ campaign, which notched up 32 billion earned impressions — not to mention the brand’s biggest week of sales ever.

“It can point to a world where we beautifully blur the lines of advertising and culture and influencer and social,”

Jury President Amy Ferguson, from Special U.S., said.

“It was wildly ambitious and loveably absurd. Culture grabbed onto it. It was

a complicated masterclass in multi-channel, and it did a ton for the business.”

Ferguson added that the Jury’s key task was “trying to find ideas whose centre of gravity was inherently tied to social or to use of influencers”, rather than simply being wider campaigns that used these channels.

“Social is everything, and everything is social. This

category is getting so ubiquitous with the work. That is a challenge moving forward,” Ferguson said.

‘CeraVe’ also took a Gold Lion in the category, while Saatchi & Saatchi, New York’s ‘Gonna Need More Tide’ campaign for Tide bagged a pair of Gold Lions. Other Golds were awarded to work from the US (2), France, Canada, Japan and — a Lions first — Kazakhstan.

“I was particularly excited about this category because it’s so modern. This space of social and influencer is changing literally all the time,” Ferguson said.

“Adapting to that is a challenge that we can meet with creativity. The shape of the work that we saw [while judging] was so varied and so vast.”

ADS SECURE GRAND PRIX FOR GOLIN

RICK ASTLEY is never gonna run around with dessert spoons. But this and other misheard lyrics from his hit Never Gonna Give You Up drove the campaign that won the 2024 PR Grand Prix.

‘The Misheard Version’ was crafted by Golin, London for Specsavers, and saw Astley re-record the song with some of its most famous misheard lines. The goal was to encourage people to book hearing tests. “Healthcare is not a sexy category and it was a very challenging brief, but they leant into humour in an all-in way to really tackle the stigma,” Jury President and One Green Been’s Kat Thomas said. “The impact of this campaign was undeniable: a year-on-year 66% increase in hearing-test bookings.”

She added: “AI hasn’t dominated but it has shown up, in interesting ways and in curious ways from a creative perspective. We saw people being brought back from the past, we saw messages from the future, we saw stories of reuniting and bringing people together. It was a very compelling storytelling device but it didn’t dominate.”

The Jury also awarded Gold Lions to work from the US (3), Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and a UK/Italy campaign.

Xbox campaign converts into a win-win for McCann London

MCCANN POLAND WINS CREATIVE DATA PRIZE

‘THE EVERYDAY Tactician’, entered by McCann London on behalf on Xbox, has won the Grand Prix in the highly-competitive Direct category. The ingenious campaign is the first to take two Grands Prix at the 2024 Cannes Lions Festival, having already won the Entertainment for Gaming category.

The entry revolves around the appointment of an Xbox gamer as a tactician for English amateur football club Bromley. Using data-based insights developed via the Football Manager Xbox game, the gamer in question, Nathan Owolabi, helped the club to its best ever league standing. The Football Manager game also saw increased usage.

Direct Jury President Pancho Cassis, also partner and global chief creative officer, David, Global, said the Jury was “in

love with this idea from day one. It is clever and makes you feel something you can’t put into words easily. It had something special that will inspire a new generation of creatives to think differently.”

Cassis said the Jury had two goals in reviewing entries. Firstly, to favour ideas that could “find people in places and at moments where traditional campaigns wouldn’t”.

Secondly, to celebrate campaigns that “invited people to do something for the campaign, making it bigger, more shareable and more famous.”

In terms of trends, Cassis said this year saw “good examples of AI being used in the right way, and some great work from big brands trying to sell products and services”.

The Jury also awarded Gold Lions to campaigns from France (2), the US (2), Spain,

Poland, Canada and New Zealand. Italy featured in two Gold Lions, one of which was shared with Ireland. Three

of the Golds, ‘Spreadbeats’, ‘Room For Everyone’ and ‘Adoptable’, have also won Grands Prix in other categories.

Billboard star wins Creative B2B

THE 100-YEAR-OLD Spaniard called Marina Prieto won the hearts of the Creative B2B Jury, helping secure a Grand Prix for David, Madrid and JCDecaux.

In a touching campaign, outdoor advertising giant

JCDecaux decided to prove the effectiveness of its billboards by filling vacant slots with images from her

social media feeds. In doing so, they transformed her from a completely anonymous figure to a multimedia sensation.

Jury President Andisa Ntsubane, also managing executive: brand, marketing and communications Africa, Vodacom Group, Africa, said: “It was the ultimate celebration of humanity, showing how the power of a simple breakthrough idea can capture the imagination of people in 14 countries. It also proved the business case for the outdoor medium, by driving engagement with audiences and revenues.”

JCDecaux’s own figures back this point. As a result of its Marina Prieto campaign, the company signed up 185 new brands and se -

cured record bookings. In a surgical dissection of his category. Ntsubane said “a big theme this year is that we’re gaining momentum in creativity in this category. The creativity and strategic thinking shone through, making this a very exciting experience for the jury.”

Ntsubane also saw evidence of B2B brands moving to the forefront of addressing global and social issues. “We saw leadership brands taking leadership positions. We also saw an increase in the use of influencers, celebrities and humour to create an emotional connection to brands in what is often perceived as a cold category.”

The Jury also awarded two Gold Lions to campaigns from US/Brazil and Italy/Ireland.

THE 2024 Creative Data Grand Prix was won by ‘Room For Everyone’, from McCann Poland on behalf of Mastercard.

Jury President Rose Herceg, also country president Australia and New Zealand, WPP,ANZ, said the Grand Prix and Gold Lions in this category“all did multiple things.They fuelled economies, challenged norms, changed politics, drove social conversations and confronted xenophobia. ‘Room For Everyone’ showed how businesses from two different nationalities could work and grow together.”

Launched in 2024,‘Room For Everyone’ is a series of digital tools focused on helping ease the resettlement of Ukrainian refugees in Poland. One tool, WhereToStart, uses data to help SME businesses identify prime locations. With one in 10 new businesses opened by Ukrainians, the project sought to demonstrate that both Poles and Ukrainians were able to thrive.

“Creative and data can seem like unusual bedfellows, but the next generation of minds in our industry will understand how to see creativity in numbers,” she said, praising entries that captured the imagination, knew their audience and told a simple story.The Creative Data Jury awarded Gold Lions to entries from India, the US and Argentina. Gold winner‘Magnetic Stories’ has already secured a Grand Prix this week.There were also two Gold Lions for entries from Mexico and Ecuador.

Weather Kids want grown-up solutions to the climate crisis

WHAT WILL the weather forecast be in Cannes in 2050? That was the question addressed yesterday in a Debussy Theatre session with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and The Weather Company.

The session focussed on the UNDP’s Weather Kids campaign which aims to raise awareness of climate change through the eyes of children. Speaking after the event, Boaz Paldi UNDP chief creative officer said the initiative had resonated positively across media and that meant it was a message being heard by both sides in an extremely polarised world. “The idea that climate change is a generational issue needs to be talked about more. It needs to be front and centre. We need to be thinking about future generations on this planet,” he said.

Ten-year-old Deon Gjoni, who took an active part in the UNDP campaign in Albania, said people of his age did not know enough about climate change. “It was one of my main talking points in the session, that everyone needs to be educated about this.

Kids especially because they are going to feel this the most. They need to be educated on it. How they can stop it, what we can do,” he said.

Derek Van Dam, CNN weather anchor and meteorologist, said he was cautiously optimistic. “We’ve

got the tools in the toolbox to solve the crisis and it’s just a matter of uniting behind it, reaching across the aisle, having the influential minds, the brands, the people, the campaigns like Weather Kids, to help change the direction of the needle,” he said.

Randi Stipes, chief marketing officer, The Weather Company, said they jumped at the chance to collaborate with UNDP. “It’s our responsibility to use our voice, to use the trust that we’ve garnered, to help people understand how they can take action,” she said. “I think a lot of people feel helpless when it comes to our changing climate, but the one thing that we can all unite around is that we need to do better for the next generation.”

Force of Nature founder urges ad world to support activists

THE FOUNDER of climate-action movement Force of Nature has called on the advertising industry to do more to support activists in their work.

“This industry shapes what we think about, it decides what’s aspirational and it manufacturers our desires. It compels our behaviour,” Clover Hogan said during her Secret Speaker talk yesterday at Cannes Lions.

“What would it look like if this industry were a force for good? If instead of propping up destructive

industries like fossil fuels, aviation, fast fashion and mass-consumed meat and dairy, it instead promoted a regenerative economy which put wellbeing and nature ahead of profit?” Hogan said.

“What if, instead of allying itself with influencers who promote mass consumerism and consumption, it allied itself with activists who are fighting for justice?”

She also called for a shift in how the climate crisis is covered in the media, to encourage people to take

action, rather than feeling overwhelmed by the task.

“The media for years failed to really sound the alarm on the climate crisis. Now they’re starting to talk about it, but they’re only platforming the domesday headlines. They’re only platforming what’s going to go wrong,” Hogan said.

“They’re not investing the time, the energy in telling stories that actually cultivate a sense of agency. That translates the climate crisis from this big, abstract problem into the decisions you make every day, into the choices we make in our work.”

“We need to really think about how we tell stories and cultivate agency,” Hogan said.

Workshop shows how socials solve brands’ creative blocks

THE MOST chilling film of recent years might be a three-minute video set in a bathroom.

‘The Clogging’ was created for toilet-paper brand Scott by VaynerMedia, spoofing horror films with its tale of a young woman whose paper blocks the toilet the first time she visits her boyfriend’s family. The project was showcased by VaynerMedia’s global chief strategy officer Wanda Pogue and head of creative, APAC Chan Woei Hern in their Winning in Social workshop at Cannes Lions yesterday. It was an example of creative whose roots were in listening to consumers on social media.

“As a brand, Scott had put a lot of emphasis on value: they’re among the less expensive toilet-pa -

per brands. But they hadn’t talked about clogging,” Pogue told Lions Daily News.

“What we saw was that there was so much anxiety and so much conversation around it, it was almost a no-brainer! We had to do something with this.”

VaynerMedia has enjoyed success with the strategy of focusing first on social content for its clients, closely monitoring how people react, and using those insights to inform further work across all channels.

“You’re putting out all of this work, you’re truly listening to the consumer, and then you’re basing your decisions on where to go and what to do next on what you’re hearing and learning,” she said.

“We don’t know what we don’t know. But we find

out!” Chan added. “It’s the community building the brand together, and that is really exciting.”

The pair also talked about trendjacking, where brands create content based on trending topics and events.

“It should be about informed trendjacking on the themes that are relevant

to the brands,” Chan said.

“Not random trendjacking.”

“Not every trend is for you, or for your brand,” Pogue said. “Why are you tapping into it? What does it help you say about the brand? Is it relevant to the cohort you’re trying to reach? Those are the questions that we always ask.”

Dentsu Lab embraces the human touch

THE GLOBAL roll-out of the pioneering Dentsu Lab, announced this week at Cannes Lions, will see the innovation project expanded to London, Amsterdam, Warsaw, Mumbai and Bengaluru, with further Labs planned for 2025.

“Technology and humanity are colliding like never before

and I think that’s changing what people need, want and expect,” said Sven Huberts, president, global innovation & experience and president, Dentsu Lab.

Huberts said it will become increasingly vital to understand new technologies but to not risk losing the human

perspective. “We need to understand what motivates people — that emotional aspect of new technology.”

Naoki Tanaka, the lead for Dentsu Lab Tokyo and chief creative officer, Dentsu Lab, added that algorithms had a habit of ending up with a predictable solution, which can fail to make a human connection. “Because Dentsu Lab focuses on the outlier perspective we can break up existing patterns. We need to have a more playful solution that touches people in an emotional way,” he said.

Established 10 years ago, Dentsu Lab Tokyo has collaborated with NTT Human Informatics Laboratories to

empower people with disabilities. “It started at the Paralympics where we created a kind of generative design system with incredible projection mapping,” Huberts said. There, Tanaka met Masatane Muto, a DJ with ALS which causes progressive muscle weakness for him and loss of motor control. The first phase involved developing a musical instrument controlled through gaze input, tracking the movement of the eyes. “The latest chapter of that is Masa using electromyography devices — hardware units that read out signalling from someone’s arm to translate that into an output so you can actually control any interface,” Huberts said.

GETTY DEBUTS BATTLE OF THE AI IMAGE MAKERS

CONTESTANTS from Getty Images, Nvidia and TikTok will compete this afternoon in an AI prompt battle in front of a live audience who will get to vote on the winners. Battle commences at 16.00 at the Marta Rooms at The Majestic, with the aim of demonstrating the most creative use of generative AI image-making. Attendees will witness real-time generation and refinement of images as each contestant strives to produce the most captivating visuals using the Generative AI by Getty Images tool.

The tool is built on the Nvidia Edify model architecture and is trained exclusively from Getty’s creative library. “Our tool is commercially safe, legally indemnified and we believe in transparency for data that goes into training,” said Getty Images’ Susan Nomecos, senior director global AI &Web3 strategy & operations.

“I firmly believe there’s going to be natural efficiencies because of what it is capable of doing,” she said, “but the tool in the hands of the right creative is where the magic happens.” She said the skill of prompt engineering is becoming more important.

“We’ve got folks on our creative team — they can prompt in their sleep. I don’t even know how they have that in their vocabulary.”

‘If you can think of it, AI can do it’

YOU CAN always rely on Elon Musk to surprise, challenge and provoke — and he didn’t disappoint his Lions audience at yesterday’s WPP seminar, Exploring The New Frontiers Of Innovation. Speaking to WPP CEO Mark Read, Musk talked about the transformative power of technology, the impact of AI on creativity and business, the need for multi-planetary civilisations, robots, a future without work and why we’re living in “the most interesting time in history”. Read kicked off by reminding Musk of his comment last November, when he told advertisers fleeing X to “go fuck” themselves. What did he mean? “I think it’s important to have a global free-speech platform where people can air their opinions,” Musk said. “And some

advertisers were insisting on censorship. Advertisers have a right to appear next to content that they find compatible with their brands. That’s cool. But what is not cool is insisting there can be no content that they disagree with on the platform.” He added that, in order for X to serve as “the public square of the world”, it needed to be a free-speech platform: “But that doesn’t mean people can say illegal things. It’s free speech within the law.”

He did, however, acknowledge that he occasionally “shoots himself in the foot” with his posts. “But at least you know it’s genuine and it’s not a PR department. I guess I think it’s better to be real than to go through a filter.”

The question of reality was central to the conversation — notably in terms of how

AI is set to change the world. Unsurprisingly, Musk is an optimist: “I agree with Geoff Hinton, the godfather of AI — there’s a 10%-20% probability of something terrible happening. But that means the glass is 80% full. I think the most likely outcome is one of abundance, where goods and services are available to anyone.”

As for what AI means for the creative industries, Musk said it would amplify creativity. “I think we’ll have a magic genie situation,” he said. “If you can think of it, AI can do it.” He also predicted that the creative companies that live through the coming transition will be ones who embrace AI and use it effectively. “If you’re using AI and competing against somebody who’s not, you’ll win.”

Want to team up with NFL stars? Let them play to their strengths

SOME of NFL’s most successful stars joined Tim Ellis, chief marketing officer and executive vice-president of the National Football League, for a session on the Terrace Stage yesterday to examine the rapid evolution of athletes as brand builders. As well as being worldclass athletes, top players are now partners, creators and business owners in their own right. On finding the right brand to partner with, DeAndre Hopkins, wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans, said it was important to align yourself with a brand and a company that supports your personal mission, as well as what you stand for on the field. “Each athlete is different,” he

added. “For myself, I’ll try to go towards brands who are eco-friendly; that are thinking about the future of the world; and also have

a CEO who is like minded and who is personable. You want to be able to speak to those people outside of the business setting.”

For Joe Burrow, a quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, a partner needs to understand that the football is going to come first.

“Because as long as I have success on the field, that’s going to help build my brand and the brands I’m partnered with,” he said. “I like having long-term relationships, because then, once you get to know each other, you can have more conversations about how to build each other and it’s not a one-way thing.”

Justin Jefferson, a receiver for the Minnesota Vikings, said: “For me, it’s always about putting myself in different situations. I know what I like and I know what I want to do for the future, and for the community. It’s just about being with a brand that knows that, and knows how I like to express myself.”

Ellis said the NFL’s “helmets off” strategy allowed sporting stars to be seen “not just as elite athletes but also as human beings”. He added that this was key to bringing in a new and broader audience.

If GenAI raises fears, choose optimism

TODAY’s debate about the GenAI technologies are similar to the reactions to the first human flights in the early 19th century, according to Meta chief marketing officer and vice-president analytics Alex Schultz. “There were people who

said this is incredible and it’s going to change the entire world and others who said men weren’t supposed to fly,” Schultz said in yesterday’s Paper Planes: Where Art Meets Science. “The hype and the ridicule, the doomsayers

and the hypemongers all exist today about AI.”

Schultz added that the creative community is confronting questions about how to embrace GenAI when we do not yet fully understand the consequences. “My choice in this moment is to be optimis-

tic,” Schultz said. “AI can assist in generating ideas, analysing trends, optimising campaigns, even creating artistic content.” He was joined on stage by Es Devlin, the artist and designer behind installations, stage designs and artworks for clients ranging from The

Weeknd, Cartier and London’s Serpentine Gallery to the British government, for whom she designed the UK Pavilion at the Dubai Expo 2020. AI was part of the last project: the building gathered words donated by visitors and used a machine-learning algorithm to turn them into poetry, which was illuminated on its exterior. “Some people said the poetry was a bit crap,” Devlin said. “But I said: none of the other buildings are writing poems. Give it a break!”

She also talked about a 2022 collaboration with Moët & Chandon and the Alliance for Endangered Languages. “When we lose a language — and apparently we’re losing languages faster than we’re losing species even — you lose not only that language but a way of thinking.”

Creative MBA puts students on course for career success

WHAT does Lion-winning work look like? What’s the difference between a great campaign and a Grand Prix? And is it possible to decode the magic?

According to Jenni Middleton, Lions’ editor-in-chief, the answer to all these questions is not only ‘yes’ but all are addressed in the new LIONS Creative MBA (cMBA), which launches officially in Cannes this week.

The new digital programme has been designed to educate creatives and marketers in what it takes to deliver a Lion-winning standard of creative marketing

course soft-launched in May, attracting more than 100 people from across the creative and marketing spectrum. “It’s been

amazing,” Middleton said. “Lions has 70 years’ worth of award-winning work and insight to draw on, along with access to

the smartest creatives and bravest brands in the world. The cMBA extends that legacy into an online forum that offers exclusive content from Lions, including curated talks by industry legends.”

A central plank of the programme’s mission to democratise access to world-class learning is the ‘You’re On The Jury’ experience, in which learners are given five pieces of work to analyse as if they were bona fide jurors. “We believe the jury room is the best classroom,” Middleton said. “Every jury member I’ve ever spoken to

learning experience. BBDO’s Josy Paul, who’s a juror and Lions winner, said to me recently: ‘I’m a pilgrim, not a judge. I’m here to worship and learn from greatest work that our industry is capable of producing.’”

Uniqueness is, in fact, at the heart of the cMBA.

“When we were building our core curriculum, it was important to us that we offered the market something that only we could do,” she added.

“The result is unique — and uniquely Lions.”

The cMBA welcomes its second cohort in October, when it will also launch an online version of the programme. The curriculum has been designed and created by Lions in collaboration with Stockholm-based Berghs School of Com -

ENCORE! Embracing The New Entertainment Era was the title of a session at the Amazon Port, focusing on how the art of capturing attention in the entertainment landscape is evolving, and how Amazon is bringing together the two sides of its business — shopping and content.

Tuesday’s panel included actor Gwyneth Paltrow, who was asked by Amazon Ads US vice-president Tanner Elton how she had built her lifestyle company, Goop, into the major influence it is. “15 years ago there weren’t any places on the internet for wellness, travel curation or healthy food that were to my taste,” she said. “Slowly a business model evolved.”

When asked “what’s next?”, Paltrow said it was more of a case of “what not to do next”, revealing that her dream was a Goop

hotel or wellness centre — a suggestion that prompted applause from delegates.

Lauren Anderson, head of brand and content, Amazon MGM Studios, said Paltrow’s words chimed with her own experience. When considering upcoming content ideas for Amazon she said she was clear about “what they shouldn’t be doing. We look for global stories that bring people together with universal themes that allow everyone to be seen and connect.”

Panelists discussed upcoming Amazon show Buy It Now, which blends shopping and content. Budding entrepreneurs are invited to pitch their products to an audience, then to experts, with the most successful ones going on sale on the Amazon store and the Prime Video app. Paltrow is one of the wise voices on the show: “I

love entrepreneurs,” she said. “I have a weak spot for people that lay it on the line, go for their dream, and I love telling their beautiful stories. I was happy to participate.”

Paltrow has plenty of advice and experience to share with fledgling businesses, including being misunderstood at the beginning, something that she said Goop fell foul of. “You have to weather the slings and arrows,” she said. “I never compromised and what’s born from that is trust.”

Anderson agreed: “Weathering the storm, that’s how you drive culture forward. Move past that and then you can build a legacy.”

When asked for advice she could give to potential brand titans of the future she said: “Be authentic, honour your commitments — that will always serve you well.”

Brands on location

Shooting a TV commercial or a piece of branded content is a complex task, requiring numerous planets to come into alignment to get the job done. Andy Fry spoke to professionals around the world who are involved in the production process

HIGH-quality and costeffective crews, access to intriguing locations, availability of state-of-theart kit and favourable climate are all essential pre-requisites in meeting a brand’s creative expectations, when it comes to commercials shoots.

In addition, the shoots also need a sprinkling of magic, a distinctiveness that will help the client’s campaign stand out in a crowded and cut-throat market. This explains why location scouts leave no stone unturned in search of the perfect shot. The combination of must-have components and eye-catching elements is what makes Iceland so popular for commercial tasks, says Bui Baldvinsson, founder of

Reykjavik-based production services company Hero Productions. “Iceland is blessed with experienced crews and spectacular locations,” he says. “In addition, we have amazing long summer days that offer filmmakers extraordinary light.”

An industry veteran who launched Hero more than 10 years ago, Baldvinsson says a steady stream of A-list brands visit Iceland for its array of volcanoes, lava fields, glaciers and iconic black-sand beaches. “You can get such a variety of locations within an hour’s drive. I think that accessibility is one of the most amazing things. Another thing that producers love is that you only have to shift the direction of the camera by a few degrees and you can achieve a

completely different unexpected look.” Brands from drinks to perfume to fashion have come to Iceland to capture iconic shots, but Baldvinsson says the island has a particular appeal to automotive clients, which can demonstrate the capabilities of their vehicles against the backdrop of some of the world’s most challenging landscapes. “Last year, we worked on a commercial for the Tesla Cybertruck, using Elon Musk’s personal prototype of the vehicle. We were in remote locations for 10 days, including filming the Cybertruck on top of a glacier.”

Baldvinsson says the Cybertruck was tested in “really harsh environments, from ice to driving through rivers. We pushed the vehicle to the limit so many times” Range Rover’s recent Spillway branded-content film (serviced by Polarama) is another recent example of how Iceland can be used to put adventure vehicles through their paces. There’s also the added bonus of discretion, Baldvinsson adds. “For brands that need to keep their vehicles under wraps, Iceland’s remote roads are the ideal solution.” Hero has worked on three feature films in early 2024, and Baldvinsson

says this calibre of work has helped Iceland build an experienced, can-do crew base. “The crews here have worked on everything from Bollywood to Hollywood to highend commercials, so there is nothing that fazes them. Equipment-wise, we have everything close at hand. But if something specialist is needed, it’s only a flight away in the UK or Denmark.”

In terms of Hero’s own capabilities, Baldvinsson says “we offer everything from coming up with the location ideas right through to post production. We will handle all production services elements from car rental to kit hire.

In some cases, we have taken clients to locations like the Faroe Islands and Greenland where it fits the brief.”

More than 3,000 miles to the west of Iceland, the spectacular US state of Montana is also establishing itself as a go-to location for commercials producers from around the world.

Dan Molloy, projects and locations specialist, Montana Film Office, says commercials producers love the diversity of the state’s majestic landscape: “Montana’s geography and climate is full of variety,” he says. “It offers deserts, rain forests, glaciers, prairies, rivers, streams, freshwater lakes and shorelines.”

Then, of course, there is the “big sky” that has given Montana its nickname. Montana film commissioner Alison Whitmer says: “Montana is a cinematographer’s dream, where pulling out an anamorphic lens starts a craving for taller and wider.

Like Iceland, Montana boasts remarkable light, Whitmer says: “Everything glows and stretches under the big sky of Montana.”

Regarding infrastructure, the film office says Montana has professional crews with local ties, no sales tax, rebates on accommodation taxes, locations assistance/ scouting, an

online searchable database and a can-do film office that provides personal service and assistance. Of particular interest, commercials producers can access the state’s transferrable tax credit — not always a given in jurisdictions round the world: “The tax credit is available to eligible commercials,” Molloy says, “and several have received certification in areas like auto, coffee and car rental”. In terms of brands that have been drawn to Montana, Molloy points to credits such as Rolls Royce’s ‘The Frontier’; Carhartt’s ‘Fit for the Next Frontier’; and Frye Boots’ ‘Spring Summer’ campaign. Montana also caters to adventure tourism and adventure-based brands — and has hosted a number of branded-content projects. Recent examples include the Chevy E Foil Adventure and a series from Free Rein coffee. Heading south, production services company Labhouse services commercials, movies and TV production from its offices in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Spain. Labhouse MD Flora Fernandez Marengo says the company has “been offering production services for over 21 years. We have worked with renowned directors and production companies, producing a wide range of projects. This has given us all vast experience in what we do and that makes an enormous difference when you are in the field.”

According to Fernandez Marengo, the company’s recent client base includes brands such as Eli Lilly, Apple Puff. Lindor, Gatorlyte and Kia. “We are constantly working on ways of becoming better at what we do and giving our clients the best possible service at a very competitive cost without losing the excellence that differentiates us. All the markets we work in have skilled and experienced crews. We also have the advantage of running offices in both hemispheres covering all climate and seasonal possibilities.” Labhouse covers a vast geographic area in Latin America and Iberia — and has developed the ability to help clients pinpoint the best solution for their projects: “We can help producers find the perfect location for their projects thanks to our local knowledge. Each region offers unique advantages from locations, to talent pool, to crew expertise, to daylight hours, to climate.”

Sharing a few insights, Fernandez Marengo says: “If there is more Art or Studio involved then probably Argentina or Spain will be a better option. If there is coast definitely Uruguay. Chile is amazing for a combination of big city and amazing nature nearby. Chile works really well for car-related work, but so does Spain.”

says Argentina offers “everything from bustling cities like Buenos Aires, where you can double a European set or an American city, to amazing deserts and mountains if you go north. Alternatively, you can go south to Patagonia, with its glaciers, mountains and snow.”

Uruguay, she says, is known for its beautiful coastline, rolling hills and amazing cities like Montevideo and Punta del Este. As for Chile, there is “a wide range of settings from the Atacama Desert to the snowcapped Andes, and from the scenic Lake District to the bustling cities of Santiago and Valparaíso. One advantage of working in Chile is that the distances are shorter so the logistics are sometimes easier.”

As for Spain, crown jewels include “cities like Madrid and Barcelona and the beautiful beaches and countryside of the Costa Brava and the Balearic Islands,” she says.

In terms of the economics of shooting in Labhouse’s countries, Fernandez Marengo says all four countries have distinctive advantages depending on the project. However she notes that: “Uruguay currently has a tax rebate incentive of 20% that works really well. Argentina is working on a similar programme but it has not come out yet. Chile is very competitive economically and Spain can also be for European clients.”

Another country with an impressive track record in hosting commercial production is South Africa, blessed with diverse locations, world-class production companies and a superb climate. Kim Geldenhuys, awardwinning director and founder of 03:07 Films, told the Cannes Lions Daily: “We’re a production company based in South Africa that works all over the world, and has a big international client base.”

Location-wise, South Africa has a broad and diverse range of locations to offer, Geldenhuys says, “but perhaps our biggest draw is the exchange rate, making South Africa a financially strong option. We are also on the same time line as Europe.”

Having been active in film, TV and commercials for decades, South Africa has developed a robust infrastructure. Climate wise, there are advantages in being based in the southern hemisphere, Geldenhuys adds. At the same time, the country itself is big enough to allow flexibility regarding seasonal shoots: “When winter hits Cape Town we move

north, to Johannesburg and the Northern Cape etc,” he says.

In terms of the kind of clients that land in South Africa, Geldenhuys says car ads are big business because of the stunning driving locations “but we can do anything. Recently we have shot for McDonald’s, KFC, Phillips and Hyundai Genesis to mention a few. Studios are constantly being upgraded to facilitate a growing features industry, so we can handle scale. Most importantly we have a wide range of production service companies.”

South Africa is also home to another leading production services company — AFS. Head of production Jayne Rogerson says: “We’re a familystyle boutique production service company based in Cape Town, with a satellite office in LA. We service the whole of Africa, including the Indian Ocean Islands.”

According to Rogerson, AFS offers “top notch, hands-on production service from the early bidding stage, right through to the end of the shoot. We have been in business for 28 years, so understand how to streamline and curate each element of production. The majority of our showreel includes TVC work, but we service all forms of content.”

Recent AFS credits underline the range, including Citibank, directed by Cole Webley out of Sanctuary LA; Delta Airlines, directed by Rodney Lucas out of Little Minx; Caplyta directed by Wally Pfister from Reset Content; Eli Lilly with Malik Sayeed out of Little Minx, and Klondike directed by Jonathan Klein out of DOMO.”

Like Geldenhuys, Rogerson talks up the versatility of South African locations and studios. “There isn’t much we can’t offer, but most importantly we have the ability to cheat multiple international locations in one country and often in one city. We also offer custom-built film studios, including a volume stage that runs Unreal software.”

Aside from exchange rates, she also points to other financial factors that give South Africa an edge over rivals: “Our talent rates are competitive and always negotiable as we are non-union, with the added benefit of our talent pool being exceptionally diverse. We also are able to reclaim VAT back for the clients so that adds a 15% savings.”
