FORGOTTEN DREAMS. (A title borrowed by Canon David Staples from a beautiful peace of music by the American composer :Leroy Anderson”.

The tragic terrorist events of a year ago recently remembered in special services and ceremonies must have reminded us all, if we needed reminding, of how precarious in nature peace is. They remind us of persisting pain. Then there are the seemingly intractable problems of the Middle East and now the epidemic of stabbings and violence in this country and consequent loss of life. We have watched the acceleration of events seemingly impotent to make any difference to the eventual outcome.

We must pray for peace, for those who shoulder the burden of decisions which influence for good or ill the lives of others, for those involved in the hostilities, for those who wait anxiously at home or by a hospital bed.

The word used in the Bible for peace is the word “Shalom”. It is a word which means much more than the absence of war or violence. It is used of a positive human quality which suggests a state of harmony in the human family dependent upon our being right with God. The prophets were a quite clear, first righteousness, then peace.

There is something we can all do. It is the sum total of all those seem­ingly insignificant self-surrenders to the will of God that makes the difference. If we wait for peace on the wide scale and do nothing our wait will be in vain. The nations will only become more peaceful nations if they become more holy nations. And nations will only become more holy nations if the people who constitute them become individually more holy people. Really committed to the Prince of Peace. That is why the individual living of the Christian life is not a mere private and eccentric hobby for those who like that sort of thing, but something of much wider significance. It is a sign of that Kingdom and deliverance from evil which we pray will come on earth as it is in heaven.

We rightly say week by week when we worship: “The peace of the Lord be always with you” and greet each other with a sign of peace. This should not be a flippant or unthinking bit of ceremonial or matey gesture. It goes right to the heart of the matter. We do not just pass the peace, a mere casual “hello”. We pass “the peace of the Lord”, and those latter words should always be included. That makes what we do more than human effort but rather a recognition of our need for God’s grace and healing power in all our relationships.

Recently we have been reminded of the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King in 1968. In a compelling phrase he announced “I have a dream”. It had not reached fulfillment. But it was his hope for reconciliation and peace in a world divided by prejudice and violence. Do we have a dream? Are our dreams forgotten?.

Churchwardens Chat How quickly the months have flown by!

The renovation work continues and we are starting to look at an improved lighting scheme. One that does not necessitate the hire of a cherry picker to change a light bulb!

The trip to Wells-next-to the-Sea, organised by the Social Com­ mittee was most enjoyable. The weather was just right and we were very well looked after by Mark and Jo of Langtoft Coach­ es.

Most of us enjoyed a really good walk, either to give us an appe­ tite for the fish and chips or to work off the excess calories.

We have started to tidy up the west side of Church Walk but some help would be appreciated. Even if we tidy now it really needs another clear up in the Autumn. If this is something you could help with please see Dudley or myself, Merryn.

For want of a tower.

Found in an old ‘The Sign’ (2003) Many visitors are attracted to the Suffolk village of East Bergholt, which lies in the valley of the river Stour, immortalised by the painter John Constable. Fewer seek out St May’s church to see its unique bell cage.

The church did once have a tower to house its bells, but it is believed that it had to be demolished in the early 16th century because it was unsafe. In about 1525 work started on a new tower, with most of the money coming in the form of regular donations from Cardinal Wolsey, who had local connections. When the Cardinal fell from power in 1529, however, and died a year later, the money stopped and so did work on the tower.

In what was intended to be a temporary measure, until a new bene­ factor could be found, a wooden bellcage was built outside the church to keep the bells in.

Unfortunately, a new source of money to finish the tower has never turned up, and so it remains as it was when work stopped in the 16 th century.

The bellcage was originally situated near the east side of the chancel.

But was moved to its present site sometime in the late 17th century.

The five bells, which together weigh just over four tons, are mounted on a heavy wooden frame and rung by hand using a wooden stock attached to the bell. This requires a great deal of skill. As a recent accident shows can be hazaradous. In 1999 a ringer suffered a hand injury, and the bells fell silent for two years until safety modifications had been carried out.

The bells can be seen through the lattice sides of the cage, and when they are rung on a Sunday morning they often attract a great deal of interest.

Bourne Abbey Mothers’ Union June Report.

On Wednesday 6th June 12 members and two guests met in the Abbey Church Hall. At the start of the meeting a short ceremony took place to enrol two new members Wendy Moody and Joan Norville into the Branch. The Reverend Sylvia Rice- Oxley our Diocesan Chaplain performed the enrolment. We then welcomed Mr. Roy McKinney from Toolbar to give us a talk on their work.

He told us how the group which meets in the Snooker Hall on a Monday morning each week helps youngsters from the age of 18years who are unemployed in assisting them to prepare CV’s and job applications and interview techniques. Toolbar is based in Bourne and is run by a group of volunteers and has local supporting organisations mainly the Len Pick Trust, Bourne United Chariities and the Local Council.

We meet in the Abbey Church Hall on the first Wednesday of each month at 2.15p.m. unless otherwise stated. Reminders go on the Pew sheet. Visitors are always welcome to attend our meetings.

We join with the 10.00a.m. Communion service on the first Thursday of each month.

N.B. The next meeting is on WEDNESDAY 11th July at 2.15 at the home of Mr.&.Mrs.P.Woodland, 26, Harvey Close. We shall have a raffle for the .Summer of Hope Appeal.

THE JULIAN MEETING Meditating on nature Many of us will remember this poem: “What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night.” William Henry Davies Human beings have always found connections between the natural world and the spiritual world. As followers of Christ meditating on creation has always been part of our spiritual heritage. One of the most ancient catechisms, attributed to St. Ninian, asks “What is the fruit of study?” The answer is: “To perceive the eternal Word of God reflected in every plant and insect, every bird and animal, every man and woman.” ************************ Our next meeting for Christian meditation will be on Monday 2nd July at 10.00 at Bourne Abbey.

We listen to a short piece of music and a reading before and after spending some time in silence together.

Bourne Elsea Park C of E Primary Academy.

Year 3 and Creation At Bourne Elsea Park C of E Primary Academy, the pupils in Year 3 have been trying to answer some very tough questions! After listening to Louis Armstrong’s ‘What a wonderful world’ the children were asked to think about the Creation story from the Book of Genesis. They were asked at the start of the work - What does Creation mean to you? A large tub of sweets was left in the middle of the room and the class were told they were not allowed to touch them while the teacher left the room briefly. Later the children were asked if anyone gave into temptation and took a sweet. They were also asked who was tempted to take a sweet but didn’t.

This led to a big discussion about whether or not those who thought about it but didn’t give in should be punished for even thinking about it. Of course the whole thing soon led back to Adam and Eve and The Fall.

The children used the iPads to take photos of the world around them and were challenged to ‘make’ a flower. Needless to say they soon admitted this was impossible and so another discussion took place about how only God could have create something so intrinsic.

Other open ended questions were posed and deliberated over. Who is responsible for looking after God’s creation? Are Christians responsible for looking after the world? Are they the only ones who have that responsibility? Are Christians better at looking after the world than other groups? The children soon realised there were no right or wrong answers – only opinions.

One particularly poignant lesson was to remind the children about the importance of Respect as a Christian Value. A member of staff showed the children a picture she had painted and she emphasised how much love and effort she had put into it.

Whilst she was out of the room, another (pre primed) member of staff came in and began saying that the picture wasn’t any good and she could make it better. She began drawing all over the painting and completely ruined it. The children were angry and horrified and shouted at her. The class teacher used this to get them to try to understand how God must feel when He looks down at His polluted creation.

The Creation work culminated in a class poem and each child designed their own Creation symbol to be put with the poem. Finally that very first question was asked again - What does Creation mean to you? Every child gave a different answer to the one they gave at the beginning. This had truly been an emotive undertaking for those young people.

Press release from Lincoln Mothers’ Union Our extensively travelled, Worldwide President , Lynne Tembey, will visit Lincoln Diocese between 3rd and 5th July 2018; arriving in Grimsby to meet local members of St James Minster Branch, clergy and in the evening Keelby MU members The highlight of the visit will be on Wednesday 4th July when several hundred members from across the Diocese converge on Grimsby Minster for our Celebration Triennial Festival Service at 2pm in the presence of the Right Revd. Christopher Lowson, Bishop of Lincoln.

A relaxing Fish and Chip supper with members at Cleethorpe’s will end the day.

On Thursday 5th July. Lynne will be escorted to Lincoln to visit Bishop Grossteste University Chaplaincy, with whom members have contact. She will then go on to our Head Quarters at St Ben­ edict’s Church in the High Street where she will meet Vice Presi­ dents and invited members and Guests for midday prayers before enjoying a chat over a buffet lunch.

A Visit to Corby Glen Towards the end of May, encouraged by the splendid weather we decided to visit Corby Glen. It is a village full of interest and can be explored on foot. It has an attractive market place. Henry III granted a charter for a weekly market and an annual sheep fair (which is still held). There are many fie houses some of which date from the late 16C of early 17C. Read’s Grammar School was founded by Charles Read in 1673. It was housed in an impressive 17C building. The original building was restored by the Willoughby Memorial Trust and reopened as an Ex­ hibition Centre and Art Gallery. At the other end of the village stands the Catho­ lic Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This was opened in 1856 and has an interesting history. When ownership of Irnham Hall changed in the mid19C, the new Protestant family took down the Catholic chapel at the hall and re-erected it in the village – a considerable undertaking. The Catholic Church closed in 2012.

It is still there and certainly worth a look at the outside of the complex of build­ ings.

The Church of St. John the Evangelist is a fine church, sited on rising ground about 150 yards from the Market Place. It has man interesting features. As read­ ers of these articles will know we enjoy church visits and as I approach the church porch I was again struck by the fact that gravestones made of slate keep their inscriptions far better than most alternatives. The one near the porch was dated 1771 and could be read clearly. As a family historian I have frequently been frustrated by the poor condition of the graves of my ancestors. The geolo­ gist accompanying me suggested the slate might have come from either Wales or Leicestershire!

The porch was large, comfortable and contains what appeared to be a piece of 18C graffiti. The interior of the church is interesting. The church website sug­ gests that ’St. John’s dates principally from the 15C with the use of earlier fabric from the 12C.’ Pevsner in his Lincolnshire volume of ‘The Buildings of Eng­ land’ comments that ‘the north aisle must date from the late 13C’.Visitors who enjoy identifying the age of different parts of a church from the architectural style will find it challenging.

I found the interior of the church charming. It is light, the box pews are an inter­ esting feature and the east window eye catching. The most famous aspect of St. John’s is the wall paintings. These were discovered in 1939 when a churchward­ en was removing old whitewash from the walls of the church. The remainder of to Swearers. In the centre there is a Piesta. Travellers to Italy marvel at the

Travellers to Italy marvel at the artistic heritage to be seen in so many churches. English churches before the Reformation had similar works of art which were destroyed by the iconoclasts. What remains in churches like Corby Glen gives us an insight into the spiritual life and the culture of medieval people.

To round off a most enjoyable visit, we had tea and cake at the excellent cafĂŠ in the Market Place.

Seated at the bar is an elderly looking lady.

The gentleman walks over, sits alongside of her, orders a drink, takes a sip, turns to her and says, “So tell me, do I come here often?”

At St Barnabas, we provide hospice care every single day of the year, with 73p of every £1 raised going towards delivering and improving the care that we offer. The remaining 27p goes towards generating future income. A donation of just £50 pays for ten lightweight fleece blankets, giving added warmth and comfort to patients, where £682 pays for a patient to stay in our hospice for specialist 24 hour end-of-life care. Recipe of the Month Serves 4

Mixed Vegetable Bake

Ingredients 175g (6oz) carrots 225g (8oz) leeks 400g (14oz) potatoes 175g (6oz) parsnips 600 (1pt) soured cream 11/2 tsp paprika 100g (4oz) mature Cheddar cheese 75g (3oz) fresh white breadcrumbs Method 1. Preheat oven 170C/325F/gas 3. Trim, peel and slice carrots.

Wash and trim leeks and slice diagonally.

2. Peel potatoes and parsnips and slice. Arrange vegetables in trips in an ovenproof dish.

3. Mix together soured cream, paprika and half the Cheddar.

Pour over the vegetables.

4. Mix together the breadcrumbs and remaining Cheddar and sprinkle over the top.

5. Bake for 45 mins or until top is crisp and vegetables are cooked through.

For a more substantial dish, add 4 rashers of chopped, grilled bacon to the vegetables.

Margaret’s Page My mother had a favourite sister called Daisy. When I was christened my mother wanted me to be named after her, but the priest refused. He said that it was a heathen name and so I was christened Margaret. My mother never called me by my proper name so my family all called me Daisy and it wasn’t until I went to college that I insisted on all my new acquaintances using my proper name. There are still just a few members of the family left who have never called me Margaret, and I recently went to stay with one of them for a few days.

Colin, my nephew, and his wife, Louise, always give me a wonderful time and spoil me rotten, but this time they had really excelled themselves. I had asked if they knew of anywhere near to them that kept alpacas as cuddling an alpaca was high up on my bucket list. Colin knew of an alpaca farm only a few miles away from their house and he had arranged a visit there for us all. It is usually open to the public at the weekends but the owner, Joanna, kindly agreed to a special mid-week visit and we had her personal attention throughout the visit.

Some of the alpacas were still in the sheds when we arrived. Joanna introduced us to them and especially to one called Julius. I was able to cuddle him and make a fuss of him and then I was told I could take him for a walk.

He was put on a lead and then we set off for a walk all round the farm with me taking Julius on a lead, just like a well-trained dog. We stopped at the pens of various animals, including an owl, three wallabies, a goat, some hens and cockerels, some geese, three rheas and finally two donkeys. Julius gave one of the donkeys a kiss. (Yes, really.)

When we got back from our walk Julius and his friends were put out into their field and we went to visit a number of pregnant females who were in a paddock well away from the other alpacas. To our delight we were just in time to see an alpaca being born. It was a female and she arrived with very little help from Adrian, Joanna’s husband. We watched for a long time as she tried to struggle to her feet but we were told it could take a few hours before she finally made it so, reluctantly, we left the field and went to browse in the wonderful shop attached to the farm.

There was one more surprise in store for me. Joanna had heard Colin and Louise calling me Daisy and so, before we left, she told me that the new baby would be named after me. I cannot begin to tell you how thrilled I was – an alpaca named after me!

Before we left I was asked to sign the visitor’s book and I did something I have not done for over sixty years – I signed myself as ‘Daisy Shephard’.

I know that it is highly unlikely that any of my readers will ever visit the White Peak Alpaca farm in Cheshire but, if you do, please look out for an alpaca called Daisy and give her a hug from me.

Nature Notes from Bourne Woods- July 2018 This is the time of year when it is possible to visit other people’s gardens on various open days. Often these are ablaze with colour with spectacular displays of organised flower beds, sometimes on the perimeter of short-mown lawns of a uniform green. The result is a testament to the time and efforts given by the green fingered owners. I must say that I have enjoyed those which I have been to, often leaving with a determination to improve the look of my own patch. However, for those who are either busy doing other things, lack the physical fitness or ability to garden, or indeed have no such private space, take heart as there are views in the woods which rival those of any cultivated area which can be sampled at any time on any day. Instead of the short turf we have deep areas of natural undergrowth of various hues but now often sporting bright patches of colour from the wildflowers therein.

The “Herb Robert” is particularly pink and contrasts well with the surrounding foliage whilst its friend, Herb Bennett too is in full bloom.

At a higher level the honeysuckle is now out -it looks and smells glorious. Nearby are Dog Rose which is “the English unofficial Rose”.

The delicate pale pastel pink petals glide so gradually to a shimery white base where the vibrant gold stamens stand proud, ready for any passing bee. I saw such a rose glistening with morning dew, looking like diamonds - just as captivating but free for all to admire. However, although it is a Dog Rose, my canine friend is not interested. She seems more interested in the less floral scents at the base of the bush!

The Five Fingers Prayer 1. Thumb. Your thumb is nearest to you and without it you are helpless. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you without whom you, too, would be lost. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for your loved ones is, as C.S. Lewis once said, “a sweet duty”.

2. Forefinger. The next finger is the forefinger, the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors and minis­ ters. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction.

Keep them in your prayers.

3. Middle finger. The next finger is the tallest. It reminds us of our leaders.

Pray for the Queen, the Prime Minister, world leaders, leaders in business and industry and administrators. These people shape our nations and guide public opinion. They need our prayers and guide public opinion. They need God’s guidance.

4. Fourth or Ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weak­ est finger, as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or pain. They need our prayers day and night: we cannot pray too much for them.

5. Little finger. This comes last, the smallest of all. This is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, “The least shall be the greatest among us”. Your “pinkie” should remind you to pray for yourself.

By the time you have prayed for the other four groups your own needs will be put into proper perspective, and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.
