Here we go again.

New Year thoughts by Canon David Staples.

A New Year is a time for new beginnings. We acknowledge this when we make New Year’s resolutions, even if they are forgotten after a day or so. But the coming of another New Year provides an opportunity for a very special look at things, to reflect on the events of the past one and to look ahead to the possibilities of the next.

At the beginning of the new millenium Churches Together in England suggested the following Resolution:. It is still valid and worth re-examining. Were they just idle words? Or are they vital for our future and that of our children?

Let there be Respect for the earth peace for its people love in our lives delight in the good forgiveness for past wrongs and from now on a new start.

Respect for the Earth. The Resolution begins with a global perspective. We live in a relationship of interdependence with the earth, its future and ours cannot be separated. Stewardship of creation is a gift from God. Hence concern for the planet and environmental issues.

Peace for its people. Peace includes concepts of justice, truth, wholeness and reconciliation. It is more than merely an absence of war. It implies a commitment to living in harmony with our fellow human beings.

Love in our lives. Love in our lives may involve a recommitment to an individual or a wider group or community. It is more than sentimental feelings. Rather it is an active will for the good of others.

Delight in the good. This is a much more positive idea than avoiding what is wrong. The million dollar question is what do we mean by “good”. By what yardstick are we to measure our actions?

Forgiveness for past wrongs. The 20th Century saw and the first 18 years of this have seen human suffering and environmental destruction on an unprecedented scale. The theme which the churches chose for the Millennium was “New Start”. That needs more than New Year Resolutions. It needs more than human best efforts. It needs an acknowledgement that we need “amendment of life and the grace and comfort (strength) of the Holy Spirit.” (from Morning Prayer in the Prayer Book as proposed in 1928).

Every new year is a gift. God’s gift to us. So is each new day.

The urgent question is how are we to use them? Christianity is much more than a private hobby, an individual eccentricity for those who like that sort of thing.

Its implications are much more important. They have world-wide implications.

Here’s wishing you a Happy New Year.

Churchwardens Chat Whilst I am writing this at the end of 2018 you will be reading it at the beginning of 2019. This time of the year is usually one for reflection and resolution. Looking back we have experienced sadness with the loss of friends and also gladness in our celebrations at Easter with Bishop Nicholas.

Uncertainty and delay have frustrated our progress with the renovation but we have doggedly moved forward through the dust and disruption. It was good to see the new access used when the Students of the Willoughby School came to the Mothers’ Union Carol Service.

Our Safeguarding Officer, Karen Key, has just completed an Audit to ensure that we are compliant with the Diocesan requirements for making our |Church a Safe environment. The PCC has spent quite some time this year making sure that we are aware of all the implications. In all areas we were mostly compliant but it was brought home to us that Safeguarding is the responsibility of EVERYONE. Any concerns should be reported in confidence to Karen or Fr. Chris. Telephone contact numbers for both Karen and Fr. Chris are on the back cover of the magazine.

THE JULIAN MEETING DAILY REVIEW

The beginning of a new year is an opportunity to take a fresh look at our lives, to reflect on past events and perhaps consider how we might conduct ourselves or do things better. We know from experience that New Year Resolutions tend to evaporate quite rapidly and are hard to keep.

A way to maintain those resolutions and achieve success is by using a practice greatly encouraged in Ignatian spirituality, that of the ‘Review of the Day’ or Examen.

This is a reflection at the end of the day looking back to where God has touched you, where you have experienced energy and life, and also to notice those experiences that get in the way of God’s life in you, where you have felt drained, anxious. It can also be a way of consciously keeping track of your relationship with God – if and how you are praying, what is happening with the habits and practices you wish to be part of your life.

Preparation Take time to be still. Pause for a moment and consider how God is looking at you.

Ask for what you desire Ask God to be present to you as you look back, to show you what he wants you to see, to open your heart to His presence in your life.

Give thanks As you begin, think of one thing from this day for which you are grateful and give thanks for it.

Look back over the day Slowly begin to look back over the day.

What has happened? Where have you been? Who have you been with?

What events and relationships come to mind? Have you taken time for prayer today?

Focus Begin to look more closely at one or more event or relationship in the day where you notice “movement” in yourself toward God: life, energy, hope, peace, creativity. What were you thinking and feeling?

There may have been “counter- movement” in your day – anxiety, fear, anger, selfishness. Take a moment to acknowledge that and if necessary ask forgiveness of the God who loves and draws you.

Then return to the movement, the thoughts, feelings, responses in you that move you toward God and responding to God and others in love. Hold them in your memory.

Conversation Take some time to talk to God about what you have noticed about your life, the events, the relationships, the movement toward God and away from Him, your habits of prayer and your desire for these.

Talk to God, or Jesus, as you would to a friend, sometimes speaking, sometimes listening, sometimes remaining in companionable silence.

Look forward with God to the day to come.

Bourne Abbey and Elsea Park Primary Schools A Miracle in Town On a very (loud) rainy morning in December, the Reception and Year One children at Bourne Elsea Park C of E Primary School sat patiently waiting for their mums and dads to settle down. There was a nervousness in the air as Owen stepped on the stage to say “Welcome to our Nativity”. And so began the beautiful retelling of that very first Christmas. Every child that stepped on the stage did so with enthusiasm and confidence. The story was a simple one. There were no frills or surprises. It was the story of how a special and most loved baby came to Earth over 2000 years ago. The key characters were there in all their glory and the story was helped along by some truly gorgeous songs. By the end of the Nativity, there wasn’t a dry eye in the hall including Mrs Abbey (Reception Teacher) and Mrs Simpson (Year One teacher). Both teachers said they were blown away by their children who, after just one week of practices, managed to perform ‘A Miracle in Town’ brilliantly. Leo (Year One) said he loved being one of the Wise Men and having to shout really loud because the rain was very noisy!

Bourne Abbey Mothers’ Union December Report.

For our December meeting we held our Annual United Carol service in the Abbey Church where we were joined by members and carers from the Willoughby School, members from Churches together in Bourne and Mothers’ Union members from the Aveland Cluster. The service was led by Father Chris Atkinson. Mr.John Saunders played the organ, readers were Mrs.M.Woodland, Mrs.A.Northen, Mrs.E.Page and Canon D.Staples. Mrs.A.Hewitt led the prayers.

Retiring collection was for the Mothers’ Union relief fund Afterwards we retired to the Church Hall for festive refreshments.

We meet in the Abbey Church Hall on the first Wednesday of each month at 2.15p.m. unless otherwise stated. Reminders go on the Pew sheet. Visitors are always welcome to attend our meetings.

We join with the 10.00a.m. Communion Service on the first Thursday of each month.

True Stories A young soldier was best-man at his friend’s wedding, and liked the hymn chosen ‘O God of Love to thee we bow’ so much that he made a note of the number so that it could be sung at his own wedding a few weeks later. The hymn was 774 in the Methodist hymnbook.

When his own wedding came along due to transport problems was rather late arriving at the church. There was just time to check the main details, but the Priest did say “Are you sure it is hymn 774 you want?” Assured the ceremony began. However, after the first verse the vicar signalled the organist to stop as the congregation were in hysterics. That church used the Ancient and Modern Standard hymnbook in which hymn 774 is: Come O Thou traveller unknown, Whom still I hold but cannot see, My company before is gone, And I am left alone with thee.

With thee all night I mean to stay And wrestle till break of day.

Reckoned to be Wesley’s favourite hymn – but not for a wedding!

--------------------------------------------A quiet wedding had taken place at a church which was part of a multi-purpose building. Everyone had gone into the vestry for the signing of the registers, when in came the young man who was running the evening dance, and he had with him a new record he wanted to try out. Just as he put it on, the wedding party emerged from the vestry to the strains of: “On the baby’s knuckle or the baby’s knee, where will the baby’s dimple be?”

Friends of Nyansakia is a charity founded in 2010 to provide aid to the village of Nyansakia and now extended to support other impoverished areas in Kenya.

Having first hand knowledge and contact with Kenyan communities, we have been able to make a positive difference through our fundraising events, individual donations and partnerships with local schools.

About Nyansakia Nyansakia is a village in Kisil central district, West Kenya with an approximate population of 3000.

It is a remote, hilly area with no industry. Water has to be carried, electricity has been recently installed but bot readily accessible.

We initially supported Nyanskia PAG primary school, which as 800 children aged 4yrs-15yrs, few teachers and poor resources i.e mud floors, broken desks and no kitchen facilities.

Our support continues through our various programmes.

Our Objectives We aim to acheive self-suffiency in Nyansakia and other such locations through: 1. Advancement of education, in particular among children and young people, by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities for education.

2. The relief of sickness and the preservation of health, in particular but not exclusively by assisting in the provision of medical services and access to medical advice.

3. The prevention or relief of poverty, by providing or assisting in the provision of food, education, training, healthcare projects to generate sustainable incomes. “Helping others to help themselves�

Recipe of the Month Vegetable Lasagne A tempting dish made from layers of herb-flavoured lasagne filled with spinach and cheese. A tasty, nutritious meal that’s bound to be a favourite with meat-eaters and vegetarians alike.

Serves 4 Ingredients 675g (11/2lb) young spinach, washed 100g (4oz) cottage cheese 1 tbsp olive oil 9 sheets ready-made lasagne 1 onion, chopped 25g (1oz) butter 100g (4oz) mushrooms, sliced 25g (1oz) plain flour Salt and pepper 225ml (8fl oz) skimmed milk 1 tsp grated nutmeg 75g (3oz) Emmenthal cheese grated.

100g (4oz) feta cheese Method 1. Preheat oven 190C/375F gas 5. Cook spinach in the water that clings after washing, until just wilted. Put in a sieve and squeeze as dry as possible.

2. Fry onion for 3-4 mins, add mushrooms and cook for 5 mins.

Add spinach and seasoning and remove from heat.

3. Crumble feta cheese and mix with cottage cheese. Grease a 1.71 (3pt) shallow ovenproof dish. Put half spinach in dish. Cover with one third of lasagne.

4. Spread with cheese mixture. Top with one third of lasagne. Top with remaining spinach and lasagne.

5. Melt butter in a saucepan and stir in flour. Remove from heat and gradually add milk. Return to heat and cook until thickened, stirring continuously.

6. Add Emmenthal and season. Pour over lasagne and bake for 30-35 mins.

Margaret’s Page I have done something this month that I can guarantee nobody else in Bourne has ever done: I have fastened the bra of the man who was once the captain of the Royal Yacht Britannia.

When I lived in Stamford I belonged to the drama group of the Stamford U3A and I made so many friends there that I remained a member when I moved to Bourne. This has caused many problems, especially as for many years I also belonged to a similar group in Bourne and rehearsals sometimes clashed although, luckily, performances were guaranteed to be on different days.

Travelling to and from Stamford at this time of year can sometimes be hazardous and I have had to cope with fog, snow and, last week, torrential rain. Two years ago it all became rather too much and I ‘retired’, but for various reasons I was talked into rethinking my decision and so this year we have just completed our performance of ‘Cinderella’ at the December meeting of Stamford U3A. We used to have a member, living in Rvhall, who wrote the pantomime each year, and when she moved to the north of England I volunteered to take it on.

This is quite a challenge as numbers can vary between 15 and 25, of various ages ranging from 50 to 90 and different abilities. Some of our longest serving members were brilliant actors in their younger days and want to continue but find they are no longer so mobile as they once were and find difficulties getting on and off the stage. A number of people can no longer learn words which is a great challenge to the writer. It is all very well saying they can have their words on the back of their hand, but without their glasses on they can’t read them. One lady tried writing them on small pieces of card which she held in her hand, but when she dropped them she couldn’t get them back in the right order. My greatest piece of inventiveness caused great hilarity a few years ago when I had a fairy with an i-pad instead of a wand. It worked very well most of the time but occasionally for technical reasons she couldn’t find her next speech. She became a great expert in the art of ad-libbing.

Some of the members we have had for many years and are still as outstanding and reliable as they have always been. One of these is Graham, who used to be the captain of the Royal Yacht – in fact he has given talks about this to the U3A in both Stamford and Bourne. He is a delightful man and he is game for anything. He has usually played a king or baron and is the only man amongst our members who is quite happy to wear tights. This year I asked if he would be willing to play one of the ugly sisters. He jumped at the chance of playing something completely different and he was absolutely hilarious, both in actions and looks. He wore the most appalling wig, glittery false eye-lashes and a pantomime dame costume, with a padded bra borrowed from one of the ladies. In the dressing-room (shared by both sexes) he asked me to fasten the bra for him. That’s the explanation of my first sentence!

Nature Notes from Bourne Woods- January 2019.

As the longest night slips by and the days lengthen the seasons march on- winter slipping imperceptibly towards spring. The hazel catkins are gradually enlarging and may be dancing in the wind by the end of the month! There are still quite a few leaves on the trees so many oaks glow with beautiful golden shades when illuminated by the beams of low sunshine. Add some morning mist and the views compete with those on your calendars! The bracken has died back so we can see the trunks of the trees more clearly, admiring the size and grandeur of the older specimens. They will have witnessed many years pass! On the forest floor there are a multitude of fungi to spot, and if you are patient, to identify. I only know a few of the more common varieties though I can recognise and have seen several Common Funnel Cap (Clitocybe) which can be as big as dinner plates in the gigantea form. I think they look like little dining tables for the elves and other creatures of the woods. The recent dampness has also facilitated the growth of small grey antlers on the old logs lying on the ground. I call this “stag’s horn” fungus (Xylaria) though my friend recently introduced me to another common name for it- “candlesnuff” fungus- which conjures up ideas of fairies using little lights at night which are then put out before we arrive. I understand that the species has several other names including “carbon antlers” and “candlestick” fungus but you may call it by other terms as well. If you have any favourites or know any which are specific to Lincolnshire then please let me know and I shall pass them on. Enough of this rambling, it is time for me to wish all readers a healthy and prosperous New Year and beyond. My dog echoes these greetings with several wags of her tail!

January is the time to awaken the fruit trees and encourage them into a plentiful harvest - which we shall be doing at our Wassail in the community orchard, off Beech Avenue, Bourne on Saturday January 12th at 4.30pm. This is suitable for the whole family.
