POLITICS AND PENTECOST. (Reflections on two recent events by Canon David Staples) The name of the game has been confrontation. I have seldom seen such an ill-tempered General Election Campaign. Serious matters have been turned into a spectator sport in the media. It has focused on character assassination rather than engaged the real issues. Seldom have I seen such an evasion of sensible questions in the interests of a mutual slanging match. There has been so much trivialising of the parliamentary process and patronising of the electorate. Is this why there are those who ignore their right to vote? People else­where would give their lives to enjoy our democratic privileges. Has the generous ethos of public service been so eroded by the greed for power’.

It all reminds me of that survival of the fittest, nature red in tooth and claw, which was the principle assumption of 19th Century Darwinism. It fits in well with the individualistic self-assertive spirit of our age and culture. It is to the detriment of community of stable relationships, of the “common” good.

The out­come is a fragmented and divided society with a law and order problem.

If politicians tell the electorate what it wants to hear in order to win votes, what mirror is the recent “campaign” holding up to society as a whole?

If what is seen in it is a true reflection, how can we hope to build a fair and just society which accepts a responsibility not only for the strong and articulate but for the weak and vulnerable? How do we define “the common good?” Has the big picture been neglected in the interests of short term political advantage or sectional interest?

There is, of course, an alternative ethos. Pentecost, which we celebrate as I write this, points to it. In that strange event on the first Whitsunday as recorded in Acts 2 all, regardless of their differences of language, were able to understand each other as they declared the wonderful works of God. To understand this story we have to look back at another in Genesis 11. It tells of how people in their prideful disregard of God tried to build a tower to reach to heaven. As a result their language was confounded. The tower of Babel produced a confusing babble with a loss of the ability to communicate and co-operate.

We need the gift of God’s Holy Spirit to bring the unity, truth and love - which is needed to counter the disunity, lying and malice which so fragment a society clearly not at ease with itself.

How can confrontation be replaced by co-operation for the common good? Does the evidence suggest that we can generate that change by our own efforts? Or do we really need the gift of the Holy Spirit. As the politicians tell us (even when we haven’t) we have a choice. In this case we have.

We’re Never Alone Picture the scene. It was a Monday and I was having a really busy day. The jobs would have to wait until the next day as I had to get to church for my daily reading and a prayer.

I walked in at about 16:50hrs and made my way to the Lady Chapel. There was a man sat in the front pew right next to the little reading table that I use. I asked if he minded if I sat there. He told me that Reverend Sheena always sat there. Without realising it, I had actually walked in at the start of Rev. Sheena’s ‘Prayer Through Lent’. Rev. Sheena appeared and asked me if I would like to stay through the praying. Was I really going to say “no”?!

I stayed for the duration, but I felt a sudden urge to look at the organ. I saw a flash of light either side of it, where the plugs are. You can imagine my surprise, but I said nothing.

After the prayers had finished, I stayed for a while, just watching the organ. Nothing happened, but that wasn’t going to dampen my curiosity. I remember Father Chris saying to me last year which I loosely related to this. He told me that when I read the Bible, if I can decide on what certain things mean, then I must be right. Also in the March 2015 edition of the magazine, I mentioned that I believed that there are spirits in the church that I believe do not want to leave, as I hear noises that I can’t relate to the heating, the weather outside, the clock mechanism, nor the old structure of the church. A few people said that I was wrong about spirits not wanting to leave. I mentioned this to somebody on the magazine committee, who said to me that if I believed that there were friendly spirits still in the church that don’t want to leave because they love the church so much, then I must be right, so you can understand my excitement about seeing a flash of light at the organ.

I took my mum to church the next day and pointed out where I was sat when I saw the flash of light. I forget her reply, but I do remember her saying that she didn’t understand how I could come into church when it was empty. I wish I had told her that the church is never empty and we are never alone as God is always with us, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. As we left, I bowed to Christ in the stain glassed window. Mum asked me if she had to do that. I told her, “no”. However, if she had said “should I do that”, then I would have said, “of course you should bow before Christ, but she didn’t.

I looked at the organ one last time, but there was nothing. No flash of light, just a load of plugs and keys. So what was this flash of light that intrigued me, caught my attention and was in my thoughts for so long? Well presumably, it was either a flash of sunlight through the stain glassed window, or just simply a trick of my eyes, or was it? But I believe that there are friendly spirits in the church who simply do not want to leave. So I must be right, mustn’t I? Paul Mason

Churchwardens Chat We have managed to tick another box in our quest for the Faculty for the new works at Bourne Abbey. The Specifications for the proposed work together with draft plans have been agreed by the Parochial Church Council and have been sent to the Diocese of Lincoln. We hope that all other interested parties also agree to the Specification and plans and that there remains sufficient time to include our Specification etc. to be put on the Diocesan Advisory Committee’s agenda for their May meeting.

By the time that you read this our Archdeacon will have visited Bourne Abbey and held her Visitation i.e. the swearing in of Churchwardens. Visitations are usually received with mixed feelings by Churchwardens as it marks the official appointment of new churchwardens or a renewal of the oath of existing churchwardens, which is pleasant. The Archdeacon then delivers a Charge, this can be unpleasant as we are informed of any new legal changes in our duties, new work or returns the Archdeacon would like, and occasionally, a rebuke about work that churchwardens have not done in the Archdeaconry. We often wonder who the Archdeacon is talking about. It cannot possibly be us!

The lighting in the Lady Chapel has been modified to give an even spread of light at the altar and the high level floodlight at near the font has been changed. New floodlights have been installed by the pulpit. We are waiting for the estimate for renewing the broken spotlight to the pulpit so that the preacher is well lit and clearly visible. You are doubtless aware of the old joke about how many people are required to change a light bulb. The safest way to reach the broken fitting involves a cherry picker, and to place the cherry picker in the correct place means moving at least ten pews. THE CONTROVERSY OVER THE PULPIT IN THE ABBEY CHURCH

by Rex Needle There have been many alterations to the Abbey Church during its 900 years of history but not all have met with universal approval. Those responsible usually had the money to finance major changes and therefore called the tune but the result was not always accepted as being beneficial for this historic building.

One of the most controversial changes was to scrap the carved oak pulpit during the 19th century, a decision which rankled with many churchgoers at that time and still has a resonance today although we have learned to live with the stone replacement.

The pulpit is the elevated platform from where the Sunday sermon is delivered to the congregation by the parson, introduced into our churches during the 14th century. Those built before the Reformation are usually made of wood and recognisable by their perfect proportions but many were replaced during Victorian times and are therefore out of character with a country church. Stone pulpits however, date from 200 years earlier and are therefore fewer in number.

The former pulpit in the Abbey Church was probably constructed at the beginning of the 17th century and, as with others of this period, generally termed Jacobean, being exceedingly simple and pleasing in design and appearance. But it did not appeal to everyone and was particularly disliked by the parish’s principal benefactor, Robert Mason Mills, who was also a churchwarden.

Mills (1819-1904) was a wealthy man, a chemist who made his money from the aerated water business he founded to take advantage of the prolific artesian wells which were tapped around Bourne and also provided vast sums of money for the upkeep and improvement of the building. In 1883, the west end was restored practically at his expense, in memory of his wife, Fanny, who had died two years earlier on 10th September 1881 at the age of 58, and his generosity is marked by a brass plate.

Four years later, he paid for three new stained glass windows to be installed in the south wall to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and he also completed the restoration of the nave in 1893, the chancel in 1903 together with the porch and south roof.

This period of restoration also included the removal of the twin aisles that had been a feature of the church in centuries past together with the pen or box pews 9

that were much favoured in earlier times. The floor level was lowered and the church began to take on the appearance that we are familiar with today. In 1890, the present stone pulpit was installed to replace the old wooden Jacobean pulpit which was sold off to the parish church at Frampton, near Boston, for three guineas plus three loads of stone left over from the alterations to the building for an additional 15s.

This was subsequently considered to be a mistake, perhaps influenced by the erroneous belief that Norman churches had stone pulpits whereas they did not even exist in the 12th century and this pseudo-Norman copy was condemned as an anachronism by Charles Pask Matthews (1886-1956) in his history of the Abbey Church published soon after he retired after 25 years as headmaster of Bourne Grammar School. He was a regular worshipper and took a particular interest in the building and his short history which appeared in 1946 became so popular that it ran to five editions and remains the starting point today for historians researching the Abbey Church.

It would appear however that Mills’ decision to proceed may also have caused dissent within his own family, notably with his son in law, Thomas Moore Baxter.

Baxter (1854-1920) was also a chemist who was engaged by Mills in 1878 to run his shop at No 1 West Street, subsequently marrying his employer’s only daughter, Emily, later becoming his business partner and then taking over the running of the company. He also became one of the town’s most prominent citizens and like his father-in-law, he was a staunch churchman and became vicar's warden at the Abbey Church in 1893, serving three incumbents for the next 27 years and from 1892, also acting as treasurer for the various restoration funds associated with the building.

He did not approve of the new pulpit but was unable to prevent the project from going through yet even when it was installed, he still had hopes that it might be removed and replaced with something like the original. When he died, he left a bequest of £100 in his will to the Abbey Church with the request that it be spent on a Jacobean oak pulpit, either an original or a reproduction, to replace the one that had been lost but although the money was received and the church architects, Traylen and Lenton of Stamford, instructed to provide a probable cost for the project, his wishes were not carried out and the stone pulpit remains intact.

Instead, his widow, Mrs Emily Baxter, intervened and realising that you could not turn back the clock, decided that the £100 should be spent to help finance the establishment of the lady chapel in the south aisle while she herself agreed to pay the balance “as a gift of love and gratitude” and the chapel was duly installed in April 1921. Baxter had obviously become an important man in the church yet, ironically, his influence had come too late because he had been unable to prevent the removal of the oak pulpit which he so much admired thirty years before.

Time however may have changed our perception of the present stone pulpit which appears to be perfectly appropriate for its setting whereas the previous one had obviously become unsuitable for its purpose. It was small and cramped and anyone who visits the 12th century church of St Mary the Virgin at Frampton to see it must agree that it would now be out of place and even incongruous in its previous surroundings and so perhaps Pask Matthews’ judgment was harsh and even misguided and Mills did make the right decision after all but no doubt the argument will continue. *************** Some ramblings from a retired mind!

We Are Survivors (For those born before 1940) We were born before television, before penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, videos and the pill. We were before radar, credit cards, split atoms, laser beams and ballpoint pens, before dish-washers, tumble driers, electric blankets, air conditioners, drip-dry clothes . . . and before man walked on the moon.

We got married first and then lived together (how quaint can you be?). We thought ‘fast food’ was what you ate in Lent, a ‘Big Mac’ was an oversized raincoat and ‘crumpet’ we had for tea. We existed before house husbands, computer dating and ‘sheltered accommodation’ was where you waited for a bus.

We were before day centres, group homes and disposable nappies. We never heard of FM radio, tape decks, artificial hearts, word processors, or young men wearing earrings. For us ‘time sharing’ meant togetherness, a ‘chip’ was a piece of wood or fried potato ‘hardware’ meant nuts and bolts and ‘software’ wasn’t a word.

Before 1940 ‘Made in Japan’ meant junk, the term ‘making out’ referred to how you did in your exams, ‘stud’ was something that fastened a collar to a shirt and ‘going all the way’ meant staying on a double-decker bus to the terminus. In our day, cigarette smoking was ‘fashionable’. ‘grass’ was mown, ‘coke’ was kept in the coalhouse, a ‘joint’ was a piece of meat you ate on Sundays and ‘pot’ was something you cooked in. ‘Rock Music’ was a fond mother’s lullaby, ‘Eldorado’ was an ice-cream, a ‘gay person’ was the life and soul of the party, while ‘aids’ just meant beauty treatment or help for someone in trouble.

We who were born before 1940 must be a hardy bunch when you think of the way in which the world has changed and the adjustments we have had to make.

No wonder there is a generation gap today . . . . . . . BUT By the grace of God . . .

We have survived!

Bourne Abbey Mother’s Union. May Report.

15 members were led by the Reverend Ian Williams for their Quiet Hour in the Abbey Church Hall for their May meeting. He began with a brief outline of his introduction to both the Methodist and Church of England during his Ministry.

We were asked to reflect on the reading from Luke 2.22.40., which is The Presentation of Christ in the Temple and also on the Nunc Dimittis. We meditated for about half an hour, followed by discussion about our thoughts.

Pointing at each figure, Ms. Terri said, “That must be Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. But who’s the fourth person?”

“Oh, that’s Pontius…...the pilot.”

Bourne Abbey Church of England Primary Academy WOW! What a fantastic visit Year One had to Belton House in Grantham recently.

The children were accompanied not only by lots of parents but Rev Sheena also joined us for the day.

Upon our arrival we were given a tour around the house; visiting the kitchen, the dining room, the Yellow bedroom and the Tapestry Room. Our wonderful guides for the morning spoke to the children about each of the rooms and what life was like in the house for both the family and their servants long ago. The children were given artefacts to handle, took part in role-play activities, dressed up in ‘old fashioned’ costumes and had the opportunity to play with Victorian toys.

After lunch we wandered through the Italian Garden towards the Church. Inside the children were encouraged to make comparisons between Belton Church and Bourne Abbey, which they visited back in October. The children remembered the Abbey Church has a golden eagle lectern whilst Belton Church has a plain lectern with gold lion feet. They compared the two pulpits, the fonts, the organs and the altars. The most obvious difference was the size of the interior and the presence of very impressive marble tombs and wall plaques.

The following day at school the children were asked to write about their visit to Belton and they wrote pages and pages – such was their interest and enjoyment!

When asked to record their favourite part of the day, many children wrote about the “pretty little church”. Luke said he loved looking for the things that were the same and things that were different.

Olivia and Kiera wrote “My favourite part of the day was going to the church because of the beautiful statues.”

Gentle Thoughts Aging: Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know why I look this way. I’ve travelled a long way and some of the roads weren’t sealed.

When you’re dissatisfied and would like to go back to your youth, think of Algebra.

You know when you’re getting old when everything either dries up or leaks.

One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young. Ah, being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable.

The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then your body and your fat have gotten to be really good friends.

The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement.

All the volunteers remain overwhelmed by the generosity of the churches, organisations and individuals living in and around Bourne who consistently donate either produce or financially to the foodbank. Since our inception we have now fed just over 1400 people!

RECIPE OF THE MONTH This recipe was given to me by my mum, Celia Pearson, so I have given it the original title of:

Mum’s Nutty Bakewell Tart Ingredients 8 oz shortcrust pastry, 2 x tablespoons of jam or lemon curd, 3oz margarine, 3oz castor sugar, 4oz ground almonds, 2oz ground rice, 1 x medium egg (beaten), blanched almonds.

Heat oven to 190c / 375f / gas mark 5.

Line an 18cm / 7� flan tin with 2/3 of the pastry, keeping the remainder for the top.

Spread the base with jam or lemon curd.

Cream the margarine with the sugar.

Mix the ground almonds with the ground rice then add together with the creamed mixture alternately with the beaten egg.

Spread the mixture over the jam then decorate with pastry strips and blanched almonds.

Bake for about 35-40 minutes.

Margaret’s Page I am writing this at the beginning of May, when the tulips are at their best. At this time of year I remember the days when I had just passed my driving test and for the first time I was able to drive round ‘the bulb fields’. In those days most of the fields around Spalding were planted with tulips and people came from all over the country to see them. I had an aunt, who lived in Leeds, who came on a coach trip to see the tulips in Lincolnshire. Sometimes we were lucky enough to meet up with her if her coach stopped for a break in Sleaford.

What a sad day it was when the tulip fields started to disappear, along with the coach trips and my lovely drive through the Spalding countryside. At that time Springfields was built as a showplace where people could go to see the tulip gardens and purchase bulbs for their own gardens. At first it was a great success and coach trips simply changed their venue and itinerary. But it wasn’t long before the gardens deteriorated and looked neglected and I no longer paid my annual visit: it wasn’t worth the effort.

However in recent years Springfields has taken on a new lease of life, following its transformation into a shopping centre where bargains can be found. This year I went to buy some shoes from the Hotters outlet in the centre and decided to have a look at the gardens. What a lovely surprise! They have returned to their former glory and have far surpassed their original display. By the time you read this you will be too late for this year’s tulips but I recommend that next year you pay the gardens a visit. I certainly shall. But I’d still rather have the bulbfields of my youth!

My friend, Vera, has recently been reading a book, whose name I don’t know. She was not impressed by the book but was intrigued by the riddle which formed the main part of the plot. She passed the riddle on to me so that I could print it in this magazine. It really belongs on the quiz page but I suspect I would have had some complaints if I had put it there instead of the usual ‘twenty questions’. So this month you are getting an extra puzzle to tax your brains during the month. I will give the answer in the next magazine. The answer is just one word.

Nature Notes from Bourne Woods- June 2015 It was a difficult dilemma- should I go to the gym for some physical benefit or should I take a walk in the woods for the uplifting experience? My dog persuaded me to opt for the latter- she has deep brown eyes, so appealing! On this occasion it was a wise decision as the sun was shining, the birds singing and the spring colours were glorious. My senses drank in the woodland sounds, the verdant greens being complemented by the colours of the wild flowers. The whites of the stitchwort and cow parsley contrasted against the pink of the campion, the yellow of the archangel and the blues of the speedwell and bugle. The bluebells are past their peak but they are quickly followed by so many other natural wonders. As I walked past one of the taller larch trees I heard the furious squeaking of chicks. It was easy to trace the sound to a hole high up the trunk. Standing a few yards away I was able to see the adult woodpecker returning to feed its demanding family. There was lots of activity at the nestbox hanging from the same tree- I wonder what the inhabitants think of their noisy neighbours! Continuing on our walk we completed a circuit and, on arriving home, put the kettle on for a cup of tea. I was just taking my first few sips when my black labrador came and sat in front of me suggesting a walk! Those deep brown eyes are difficult to resist!

Our next event is a Tree ID Walk on Wednesday June 3rd at 7pm from the main car park.
