Welcome to BU’s SOT!

A NOTE FROM THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE DIRECTOR

The School of Theatre is overjoyed to welcome you to our 2025-2026 season. This year all of our work explores the themes of Renew and Reuse, an invitation for all of our resident theatre practitioners here at SOT to present work that takes a story or theme that may seem somewhat familiar, use the storytelling power of theatre to examine those themes anew. For some of our projects such as Dream this entails adapting a play that has been mounted perpetually since its first incarnations and re-shaping it to push the boundaries of live performance through its exploration of technology on stage, or, not so perpetual, such as Islander and its exploration of sound. For our many instances of new work–The Eleanors, Thumbprint, Calf Scramble, Flowers for Mrs. Harris, Flight, and our Next Stage Workshops and Springboards– this re-envisioning takes the form of new and emerging artists re-considering essential queries of what it means to be human during our brief period of time on this earth together. For pieces such as Top Girls, Fefu and Her Friends, 12 Angry Jurors, and contemporary adaptations of Roméo and Juliette, Medea and The Oresteia, this can mean rediscovering work by playwrights who have demanded audiences contemplate the forces that bind, or otherwise threaten to tear us apart. We are also delighted to revisit offerings that appear each year in our season–namely our collaboration with Boston University's Dance Theatre Group Aurora Borealis and Director’s Project. We hope, however, that you will experience all of our pieces as a celebration of community and collaboration, forces that have proven time again, to instill meaning not only in our work, but the processes that we share to bring that work to life.

DRAMATURGY NOTE

Future Farmers of America (FFA) was founded and held its first national convention in 1928 after nearly a decade of groundswell organization and funding from the 1917 Smith-Hughes National Vocational Education act which provided federal funds to schools in part to teach agricultural trades. Individual high schools have their own FFA chapters where students can participate in a wide variety of events including public speaking events, food science and technology, livestock judging, veterinary science, livestock raising and much more.

,

Calf Scramble focuses on five high school students who are raising market heifers (young female calves that have not produced offspring). In order to secure a calf for their year-long project, students have the option to purchase one or participate in a calf scramble where they can win money to purchase a calf. Calf scrambles are rodeo events where calves are released into an arena for high school students to catch…by any means necessary. Students must grab a calf, halter it, and then drag it into the center ring to win their project. Want to see how it works, check out this link or our lobby display.

Many students describe catching their calf as the sprint, and raising their calves as the marathon. Daily care responsibilities include: Feeding and watering, tracking growth, bathing, grooming/brushing, cleaning their stalls, and training them to show at competition and sell at auction. Students spend about a year raising a calf for auction where animals are sold for beef, breeding, or dairy purposes to the highest bidder. The student and supporting organization split the money received form the sale of their animal. Students can choose to spend, save or invest that money in the next year’s project.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Libby has developed Calf Scramble at Invulnerable Nothings’ Barn Lab Residency, Playwrights Horizons New Works Lab, Workshop Theatre Lab, Ojai Playwrights Conference (where I first heard about the play). In addition to being a 2024 O’Neill National Playwriting Conference finalist, on November 18, Libby and their play was put on the 2025 Kilroy’s Web spotlighting new work artists and plays by women, trans and non-binary playwrights.

This workshop production of Libby Carr’s Calf Scramble, is coming at a very exciting time in the play’s development. Our design team met over the summer to hear the play aloud and discuss design approaches to this new, unproduced play. In our first week of rehearsal, Libby traveled from New York to join the cast and designers in person to discuss and develop a new draft. Then our team went into rehearsal and production where we stayed in contact with Libby as we incorporated the changes and asked new questions which led to new discoveries and edits.

What you are seeing is an experiment, a play still in development That means Libby can use this workshop production to learn new things and make adjustments to the script before its official Off-Broadway world premiere at Primary Stages in February. This work represents a unique relationship between playwright and university. Boston University and our community gets early access to an exciting new play, and Libby gets to both be in process and see their play on its feet. Boston University’s workshop production of Calf Scramble can serve as an example of how resource-backed collaborations between playwrights and universities are not only mutually beneficial, but radiate outward to positively impact professional theatres, like Primary Stages, theatre makers, and the overall American theatre.

SPECIAL THANKS

On a personal note, thank you to Wendy Goldberg, Kirsten Greenidge, and Kristin Leahey who supported me in bringing this project to the School of Theater. Thank you Libby. Thank you for trusting me. With your play and with your process. It has been a labor of joy, honesty, and gratitude. A true, true honor.

Thank you for being here and I hope you enjoy the ride.

- Shalee Cole Mauleón, Director
