GREETINGS FROM BOSTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MUSIC CHORAL STUDIES

I am thrilled to welcome you to this special collaborative concert and residency between Boston University School of Music and the world renowned American Spiritual Ensemble. Special thanks to Dean Harvey Young at the Boston University College of Fine Arts, the Greater Boston Choral Consortium, and Emmanuel Music for making this event possible through financial and logistical support.

Tonight, we celebrate the rich tradition of the African American spiritual, bringing musicians of all ages and from all corners of Boston together, in a community musical celebration. I am elated to welcome guest choruses from the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Children’s Chorus, and Boston Arts Academy as we explore the rich tapestry of choral singing in Boston and reaffirm relationships built through music and music education.

I am honored to share this space with my colleagues, friends, and fellow educators. Through this performance, we aim to honor the resilience, artistry, storytelling, joy, and sorrow inherent in spirituals, while also highlighting the incredible talent and dedication of our musicians and our community. ENSEMBLES

AMERICAN SPIRITUAL ENSEMBLE

The American Spiritual Ensemble was founded in 1995 in order to maintain and honor the music pioneered by enslaved African people. ASE is a critically-acclaimed ensemble that is dedicated to performing provocative, dynamic concerts around the world celebrating the American negro spiritual. Additionally, ASE frequently visits educational institutions in order to teach students about the history and traditions of enslaved people in America and their spirituals. ASE also presents master classes, television performances, radio performance, and interviews on the music of the American negro slave. The mission of the American Spiritual Ensemble is to preserve and continue the tradition of storytelling through the performance and preservation of the American negro spiritual. Performing these spirituals serves as a tribute to the many lives lost or destroyed during slavery in the United States; a horrible time for human kind. These songs, a combination of African, American, and European traditions, create a new type of melody in which a sense of identification was created within the enslaved community. These songs now stand as a testament of the strength found through faith during times of hardship as well as a unifying force among all peoples. These songs are beloved all around the world.

BOSTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MUSICCHORAL STUDIES

Boston University has been a leader in the arts since 1872, and the School of Music within BU College of Fine Arts is a vibrant part of the University— all in the artistic and creative city of Boston. BU School of Music offers comprehensive conducting training alongside world class undergraduate and post-graduate degrees in voice, music education, and historical performance. The graduate Conducting programs at Boston University combine study of orchestral and choral conducting techniques and literature with related work in performance, music theory, and musicology. The setting, residing within the structure both of a school of music and of a major research university, is vibrant and intimate. Conducting students, whether specializing in choral conducting or in orchestral conducting, join a diverse community of scholar-performers, led by distinguished, creative, and experienced faculty. In addition, the School of Music supports active centers of early music and new music. and includes 20 members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. BU School of Music currently offers three graduate degrees in choral conducting alongside graduate degrees in music education, musicology, composition, and music performance. The graduate programs in conducting are led by new director of choral activities Daniel Parsley.

BOSTON CHILDREN’S CHORUS - PREMIER CHOIR

Boston Children’s Chorus (BCC) was founded in 2003 by Hubie Jones, a civic leader who has worked for six decades to address the social problems facing Boston’s underserved children and communities. Named Boston’s “Ambassadors of Harmony” by The Boston Globe, BCC harnesses the power of music to connect Boston’s diverse communities, cultivate empathy, and inspire social inquiry. BCC after-school choral programs include 10 choirs with singers from 110 different zip codes in and around Boston. BCC is also proud to partner with schools to provide in-school choral education in Mattapan, Roxbury, South Boston, East Boston, Allston and the city of Chelsea. BCC presents over 50 performances per season in a wide range of public and private events. They have performed in venues from Boston Symphony Hall, and Royal Albert Hall in London, to Sydney Opera House, and the White House.

BCC is supported in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, and in part by a grant from the Boston Cultural Council, a local agency which is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, administered by the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture.

THE SPIRITUALS - BOSTON ARTS ACADEMY

Founded in 2009, The Spirituals of Boston Arts Academy explores the evolution of the African-American sacred choral music tradition. This auditioned group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors at Boston Arts Academy, the city’s only public arts high school, is directed by Michael W. Bradley. In addition to their 2015 victory on “Sing That Thing!,” Spirituals won a Gold Medal at the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association Festival. The Spirituals have been one of the premiere performance ensembles for BAA for over ten years, performing for political dignitaries and the greater performance community of Greater Boston and Massachusetts. The Spirituals recently performed for the American Choral Directors Association Eastern Region Conference and will travel to Williamsburg, VA to compete in the Heritage Music Festival.

HANDEL AND HAYDN SOCIETY YOUTH CHORUSES - CHAMBER CHOIR

The H+H Youth Choruses is a collaborative community where singers aged 7–18 hone their craft, express their creativity, and make unforgettable memories alongside forever friends. Over its 30 years, HHYC has grown from a handful of dedicated young people to seven choruses welcoming more than 150 singers each semester. Through large- and small-group instruction, weekly musicianship classes, collaborations with leading professional ensembles, and international tours (including the 2024 HHYC tour throughout Austria), world-class faculty partner with these young artists to create a rigorous yet welcoming environment for musical and personal growth—a chance for everyone to find their voice. Singers also treat H+H audiences to inspiring (and impressive) performances onstage at Symphony Hall and NEC’s Jordan Hall—often joined by the H+H Orchestra and Chorus—throughout each subscription season, sharing their passion for the living tradition of choral music with all of us.

The H+H Youth Choruses are a component of the Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program.

CONDUCTOR BIOS

Daniel Parsley enjoys an active career as a conductor, educator, scholar, and professional chorister. Daniel is Director of Choral Activities and Director of Graduate Conducting Programs at the historic School of Music at Boston University, the oldest degree-granting music program in the United States. At BU, Daniel oversees the comprehensive MM, MSM, and DMA conducting programs, teaches graduate conducting and choral literature, and leads the BU Singers and Symphonic Choir. Daniel was most recently the Director of Choral Activities and Program Head at Thomas More University in the Cincinnati area. At Thomas More, he founded and directed three choruses that included over 125 singers and taught music history and music theory. While in Cincinnati, he also served as associate director for the Cincinnati Youth Choir, Ensemble-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Since 2019, Daniel has served as associate conductor of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra (CCO). At the CCO, he leads the We Are One series, special events such as the Walk with Amal project, subscription concerts, and assists with the annual SummerMusik festival. In 2023, Daniel will make his guest conductor debut with the Portland Symphony Orchestra and Coro Volante. Most recently, Daniel was the assistant conductor and choral conducting fellow for the Cincinnati May Festival, where he prepared choruses for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Pops.

Parsley has enjoyed a wide breadth of diverse professional experiences globally ranging anywhere from roles as a research fellow in Ghana, West Africa through the Edward Brueggeman Center for Dialogue to engagements with the National Chorus of Korea in Seoul. Upcoming engagements, masterclasses, and residencies include the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, the University of British Columbia, and the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. He has served as faculty for the Kentucky Institute of International Studies (KIIS) Salzburg Study Abroad Program and Cooperative Center for Study Abroad (CCSA) London summer study abroad since 2013.

A Cincinnati native, Parsley completed a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Choral Conducting with a cognate in orchestral conducting at the University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music (CCM). Daniel also holds a M.M. in Choral Conducting from Bowling Green State University and a B.M. Voice Performance and B.A. International Studies with concentrations in economics and history from Xavier University. In 2019, Daniel was selected as one of four finalists for the 2019 American Choral Directors’ Association National Graduate Conducting Competition held in Kansas City. Parsley has studied conducting under Robert Porco, Earl Rivers, Brett Scott, AikKhai Pung, Mark Munson, and Tom Merrill.

Dr. Everett McCorvey, tenor, is the founder and director of the American Spiritual Ensemble. A native of Montgomery, Alabama, he received his degrees from the University of Alabama, including a Doctorate in Musical Arts. Vocal Excellence is a hallmark of Dr. McCorvey’s work. As a teacher, he has given master classes and vocal workshops throughout the United States, Europe, South America, China, Japan, and Poland. Dr. McCorvey is the founder and Music Director of the American Spiritual Ensemble. McCorvey recently produced a CD Anchored in the Lord featuring singers from the Bay View Music Festival’s American Negro Spirituals Intensive Program, where McCorvey serves as Director. His career has spanned all areas of the performing arts industry, from performing to musical directing, vocal teaching, producing, impresario, conducting, union representing, administrative work, and mentoring. Dr. McCorvey is of the belief that every citizen in the country should find ways to give back to his or her community, city, or country. He has been very active in his volunteer activities working to keep the arts as a part of the civic conversation and currently serves on many local, regional, and national boards. He holds an Endowed Chair in Opera Studies/Director of Opera and Professor of Voice at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky.

Dr. McCorvey is also entering his 7th season as the Artistic Director of the National Chorale of New York City. Celebrating over 50 years of great choral singing, the National Chorale is a symphonic choir which performs at Lincoln Center in New York City. The National Chorale is well-known in New York and around the region for its performances of the great choral titans as well as for the popular New York Messiah Sing-In at Lincoln Center! The Sing-In is one of the oldest sing-in’s in the country.

Michael W. Bradley has been an active educator in the arts community and K-12 education for over fifteen years. Mr. Bradley graduated from Berklee College of Music with a B.M. in Music Education. Now in his tenth year of teaching, Mr. Bradley currently serves as a member of the Voice Faculty of Boston Arts Academy, where he chairs the Music Department. Mr. Bradley’s teaching responsibilities at Boston Arts Academy include Freshmen Vocal Technique and Music Theory, Junior and Senior Contemporary Vocal Technique, Blended Roots Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, Lyric Choir, Men of Valor, Concert Choir, and the award-winning “Spirituals.” Mr. Bradley’s choirs have competed and placed in national competitions and have performed for Yo-Yo Ma, Damien Woetzel, and at the White House for First Lady Michelle Obama. Through his consulting firm, Motif Creative Services, Mr. Bradley maintains an active schedule as a composer, arranger, performer, and director in Choral and Gospel music.

CONDUCTOR BIOS

Alyson Greer Espinosa is thrilled to be in her thirteenth season on the H+H faculty where she is the conductor of the Chorus of Sopranos and Altos and the Chamber Choir. This season’s highlights include preparing singers for performances of Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the H+H Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Raphaël Pichon, appearances on the GBH Holiday Music Spectacular and the H+H Baroque Christmas subscription concert at NEC Jordan Hall, collaboration with Cappella Clausura on the Cozzolani Vespers, leadership of the HHYC summer tour of Austria, and this evening’s concert with the American Spiritual Ensemble. Ms. Greer has prepared HHYC singers for performances with Harry Christophers and the H+H Orchestra and Chorus of Bach St. Matthew Passion, Handel Messiah and Saul, Vivaldi Gloria, Mozart Requiem, and Monteverdi Vespers. Other ensemble collaborations include the Back Bay Chorale, Harvard-Radcliffe Chorus, Boston Musica Viva, MIT Concert Choir, Metropolitan Chorale, Heritage Chorale, the Eureka Ensemble Women’s Chorus, Mother Caroline Academy, and the NEC Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorale. The former Young Women’s Chamber Choir performed on From The Top and CSA was featured in BBC’s Great American Railroad Journeys under her direction in 2017. Such collaborations and performances have afforded Ms. Greer and her singers inspiring musicaleducational performances with conductors such as Harry Christophers, Raphaël Pichon, Ian Watson, Dr. Scott Allen Jarrett, Dr. Andrew Clark, Dr. Lisa Graham, John Finney, Dr. Lynnel Jenkins, George Steel, and Ismael Sandoval.

Kenneth Griffith is the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Boston Children’s Chorus (BCC) Premier Choir. He leads artistic programs and coaches the conducting and teaching staff. Kenneth is passionate about the role of music in cultivating community and positive social change. His dynamic programming and ability to unify singers across differences have resulted in an active career on stage, in schools, and in communities around New England, sharing the songs and stories of underrepresented peoples.

During his time with BCC, Kenneth has led the chorus in major performances at some of the city’s most prestigious venues, including Boston’s Symphony Hall, TD Garden, and Calderwood Hall.

Kenneth’s choirs have performed in the debut of a new musical, WILD, with the American Repertory Theater featuring Idina Menzel, the WGBH Holiday Celebration with operatic tenor Lawrence Brownlee, the American Choral Directors Association Eastern Region Conference, and civic performances for the Earthshot Prize with the Prince and Princess of Wales, and the investiture of a US Attorney.

Over the years, he has assisted in preparing ensembles heard at the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, American Repertory Theater, and the Verbier Music Festival in Switzerland. On the professional stage, Kenneth recently prepared the chorus and ensemble for Anthony Davis’ Pulitzer Prize-winning opera X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. This project’s recording was GRAMMY-nominated in 2023.

Kenneth holds a BM in Vocal Performance from Capital University and an MM in Choral Conducting from Bard College.

Founded in 1872, Boston University College of Fine Arts School of Music combines the intimacy and intensity of traditional conservatory-style training with a broad liberal arts education at the undergraduate level, and elective coursework at the graduate level. The school offers degrees in performance, conducting, composition and theory, musicology, music education, and historical performance, as well as artist and performance diplomas and a certificate program in its Opera Institute.
