INFINITO

2021 CALGARY WINTER CITY DESIGN COMPETITION - WINNER

INFINITO is completed with Charlie Jiang, Christian Icuspit, William Zhuang, Andrew Lee, and Karim Kandil. This is the first project I lead and managed as an fine art student. It is also the first built project for the team members.

The INFINITO tunnel portrays the possibility to reconnect with people intimately after the COVID-19 pandemic. The tunnel seemlessly adds an interactive social element to Stephen Avenue, attracting visitors of all ages to be curious and playful with the structure. Pedesitrians can see, touch and feel the tunnel. It provides a natural barrier-free pathway that shields them from overbearing skyscrapers, reducing the scale of the surrounding down to a intimate level. Through out the process we learned to use many tools and construction techniques and working efficiently as a team to resolve concerns identified by the city and constantly revise our proposal to meet the engineering requirement without departing too much from the proposed design.

The interior is inspired by the effect of traveling at the speed of light through hyper space, referencing the ability to catch up to all the social life that we missed during the pandemic lockdown. As we look up, the infinity mirror symbolizes the infinite possibility that awaits us.

As the project lead of the team, was heavily involved in every step of the development process, from concept creations, site analysis, rendering, engineering, progress monitoring, time management to fabrication.

All renderings presented are collaboratively done with Christian Icuspit using Revit, Lumion and Photoshop.

2021 INFINITO 9 | BOSCO CHIK BOSCO CHIK | 8

The tunnel’s opening orientation flows with the existing traffic without obstructing pedestrian travel. The width of the space allows couples to walk through intimately and is accessible to wheeled devices.

The tunnel adapt to the different festivities happening on Stephen avenue with its adjustable RGB LED. On St. Patrick’s Day it displays a green theme, on Valentines day it displays a romantic color scheme, and to express our support for Ukraine it displayed their national color.

The ZIG CLIMBER is one out of three houses completed in Studio of the minor program. It is transfomred from previous iterations of design prompts such as the precedent homes, chosen circulations, programing, and parti, and a chosen site. The final home takes into consideration of all the previous iterations and constraints.

The intention of this home amplifies the adrenaline driven experience of climbing up the existing zig zag stairs of the slope site, while making the users eel fully embraced by the surrounding landscape. The home also experiment with the balance between private and public space, where the staircase serve to normalize shared space within a home. The programming’s staggered layout intend to eliminate the idea of hierarchy between public and private structures. To reach into different space, occupants from both private and public must use the shared staircase. As they are using the staircase, the garden are checkpoint for recharge, and also features downhill slides through each garden as an alternative pulsating way of downhill circulation. The landscape embraces the structure as it sinks into the land, roofs with vegetations that flow along the landscape, with some area specifically made for birds. These habitats enhances the experience of the staircase with the sound of nature reverberating through out the climb.

BILD CALGARY HOME DESIGN COMPETITION

High School Division

1st Place

The home is a mountain retreat designed for a nature lover, located on an island surrounded with mountains. It features a contemporary cobination of walnut wood, stone and concrete. Its layered roof creates dynamism. Moreover, the expansive balcony and patio encourages outdoor activities, accessible in every direction of the home. From choosing the location to designing the layout, I constantly ask myself, how can the home permit the occupant to embrace all of its surrounding wonders. As a result, the home’s windows and doors opened up to sceneries, making the entire floor plan open as possible.

The Master bedroom on the third floor can see every direction of the home, there is no limitation to the surrounding scenery.

The south side features a infinity pool hanging on top of a waterfall that travels down to a lake. The west side has a roof over benches that over look the setting sun, the the east balcony glances at the rising sun. Overall, this is a resort packed with entertainment spaces like pool table, indoor gym, inifinity pool, and four social lounge.

A32 INTERIOR DESIGN

In the summer of 2020, was given the opportunity to design a newly bought compact apartment for my relative. The 231sqft apartment features two levels. All the amneties are on the mainfloor and the bedroom is on the secondfloor.

She requested to have a contemporary asian style that includes natural hardwood, and enough storage for 2 people. The existing space does not have any storage on the mainfloor and not enough storage for the kitchen. As a rental unit, it will be insufficient in many ways.

As a result, my design needs to maximize storage space without reducing surface area and keep the design favorable to the current Chinese market. The Interior is inspired with a mix of Japanese contemporary and Chinese traditional presence. Uniformity is achieved through using Bamboo wood for all the wood elements of the home. LED ambient lighting enhances the wood’s presence. Contemporary furniture and light fixture infuses contemporary aesthetic into the home.

The space under the stair is divided into sections for fridge, boiler, slide out shoe rack and extra storage. The cabinet doors are high gloss mirror-like acrylic panel. This material gives an illusion of expanded space through reflecting the surrounding, creating depth within a compact space.

4215 BOW TRAIL SW, REDESIGN

This is a real building in Calgary that I worked in for the past years. As I work have recorded down all the issues it has and redesigned it in one of my elective architecture courses. did a full analysis of the building and solve each identified issue with a new design solution. The redesign aim to renovate the entire building in and out efficiently as possible.

For example, the facade is redesigned to improve its aesthetic presence in the neighborhood, more vegetation and fencing to increase privacy on the property. An additional floor added to the roof to make the top floor an executive suite, adding value to the building. This project is driven by the notion that renovated architecture can be as refreshing and trendy as new building.

New Garden:

The new fourth floor has a new garden where residents can gather for leisure. The garden features concrete seats and tables and a mini water fall that creates a soothing sound.

New Roof:

The new slanted roof will dispose the water and snow by gathering it from the center and disperse it to the sides of the building. The new roof also features skylights to increase interior natural light, making the new addition the brightest suite.

Increased Capacity:

Since the original roof is flat, an addition is built to expand the highest unit into the fourth floor. Increased capacity and value.

New Elevator:

The south side stairs can be completely removed since the building has less than 20 occupants, only one set of emergency stairs are required. The stair is replaced by a screw drive elevator, improving accessibility.

ADDITION FLOOR PLAN

Social Improvements:

The fences at the parking are further extended to the back alley to resolve the issue of neighbors (B2&3) using the parkade as a shortcut into their property. Two water fountains are implemented to create peaceful white noise that soothes the traffic noise for residences. New vegitations are added to improve noise-cancelling, at the same time providing extra privacy for the lawn.

Translucent hallways door are replaced with transparent glass doors to bring in natural light from the south and north. The north side building windows are replaced with an larger and openable window to let in more natural light and promote air circulation.

Previously, the basement does not have a balcony. Now it is expanded by digging out toward the front yard to create the same surface area as the balconies above. The expansion also adds glass sliding door, which promote natural light and air circulation within the unit.

This is a tastefully modified paper cast shoe and duffle bag that aim to express the expense and exclusivity of sustainable development and products.

As sustainability becomes a trend, products that are labeled as green and environmental friendly is usually more expensive. For example, majority of IKEA’s furniture is made of recycled material and they are charged a bit more than its predecessor. Similarly, installing solar panels and buying EV cost more than gas powered counter-parts. Majority of the population cannot afford sustainability so how can we expect society to become sustainable when only the wealthy can afford it.

The other question raise from this paper sculpture is luxury brand adaptation of recycled material in their product-line. Designer brand are known for their top-quality material but when recycled material are mixed they came less durable and less valuable, yet they their pricing remain indifferent. Does luxury brand lose their status as luxurious without the quality materials? Or will it fall to becoming recycled trash with a valuable brand tag?

In sum, going green is expensive!

THE RING CONCEPT

Imagine how our world will look like when there is no room left. One may believe we will not live long to see that day but it is happening now. We have a low supply of affordable housing and an extremely high demand, meaning average family will find it unaffordable. Housing supply will always be lower than demand because our population grows exponentially. Forget about Mars and Elon. Start digging now!

Let’s start with the concept. We need to consider what is already available here on Earth. Not something that is unreachable. And this is where the innovation comes in.

Let’s build a city undertground! This is not new, we are just blind due to our curiosity about outer space and the excitement of rocket launches. Some Ancient civilizations used to have cities underground. We already have traffic underground. Metro Stations, Tunnels, underground parking. But why can we not live in it? Maybe we are just not used to it yet. Just like how Cubism was not accepted when it was introduced to the art world until later on when more and more were produced. I believe that eventually, underground dwellings will be the new trend in housing.

THE RING STRUCTURE:

The ring is estimated to compose of over 1188 units and more. They are seperated into 4 sections with a towering lobby in between. The center of the ring is a park compose of roughly the size of about 20 basketball courts, featuring variety of recreational and leisure equipment, pool, field, and courts. The sky of the ring is powered by a dome shape LED panel that reflects natural sun lights into the ring and can also imitate the weather condition of the surface world. The porous panels are combined with a ventilation system built in between each ring to bring fresh air from the surface to the ring.

The ring is accessible by an elevator from the surface. First, one will enter a underground city that interconnects each ring as each ring to create a effcient use of space. They are also stackable, permiting the ring structure to grow vertically and horizontally. Ultimately, the ring can cover the entirety of the globe as an extra layer of foundation under the surface.

Materials: Recycled cardboard, copper sheet, flora cat figure, dragon charm, shoe laces, strings, paper.

The model delivers the concept of fengshui and bring awareness to the interactions between the different dimensions. The design process considers the interconnection between the material world and the spiritual realm. The form is shaped by the understanding of matter’s vibrational energy.

The vibration of the spiritual entities directly influence the functioning of physical matter, from large to microbes. Its vibrating frequency can change the structure of matter, mutilate matter, reconstruct, heal, or destroy. Energy is indestructible.

The home is in the middle between Ying and Yang. Similar to our realm we live intertwined with the spiritual world, and we seek a balance between the two.

The map informs the flow of energy, Ying-Yang, and how the form of the building should respond to the flow of energy. How do we create forms that counters vibrations and frequency harmful to the occupants’ well-being?

The pursuit of beauty, form and abstraction

Spiritual, energy, natural flow and reaction to energy of the forms and energy of the environment

The collision of ideas. Embodying art, spirituality, and architecture all in one

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Pen Sketch, 2020

I believe sketching is an essential tool for an architect. It is the initial presentation of an idea that guides the development process. In fact, sketching is the quickest way to communicate an idea to a client when oral description cannot be understood. Thus, an architect’s ability to render their imagination quickly and accurately will have an advantage over dependency on CAD. Hence, I value sketching greatly, as it permit rapid materialization of our thoughts.

Stairs of Nortre-Dame Water Color, 2019

This painting pays homage to the Nortre-Dame Cathedral after its fire incident on April, 2019. I aim to accurately portray the cathedral with my twist of abstracted geometry to create an illusion of depth, presenting the steps that leads to heaven and hell. I have always been facinated to the craftmanship of famous cathedrals. Now when we enter a church, it fails to shock us with the power of its architectural design as modern taste have made it bland. Thus, in the process of painting my mind constantly seek to revive the classical design language in a contemporary context without dullness.

Vision - Stampede Poster Competition Oil Paint, 2020

When one is open to new knowledge, they see everything with more than one perspective, giving them creative solutions to an issue. I asked myself how can compose a horse differently than my compeititors? What is never done before in the past that could catch the attention of the jury? We can see a horse with our eyes but cannot see what the horse is seeing. As a result, the painting exhibits the reflecting perspective of the horse through his own eye, which ultimatly scored me a third place in the competition.

believe the same applies to architecture, because an open-minded architect does not restraint itself from exploring possibilities deemed impossible. This permits endless creative solutions to an issue.
