SUZY SHEPHERD

Welcoming Celtic for the second week running. We know after last week if we want to progress into the next round we are going to have to be at our best and we can’t afford to give them time and space or we will get punished. We have had a good week of training and are all looking forward to this fixture. I hope you enjoy the game,

Suzy Shepherd

CAPTAIN’S COLUMN

AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR ALIX WILKINSON Our game this weekend against Celtic In The league cup will be a good challenging game for us. Throughout the week the team have been working hard on the lead up to this game. I believe the team has improved over the past few games and we just got to keep the hard work going. If we do the simple stuff, win our own battles and play our game I think we will get the result we are hoping for. If it doesn’t challenge you it won’t change you! Alix Wilkinson

Match report BTFC

ast week in the Scottish Women's Division 1 curtain opener we welcomed LCeltic Academy to Meggetland. After a productive summer with some

exciting acquisitions, Thistle fancied an upset coming into this fixture against last seasons league runners up. Boroughmuir started the game competing well against the talented Celtic side, however it was the away side that opened the scoring, and what a goal it was! From a Hoops throw-in the ball was dispossessed from Kirsty Maden where it fell to Holly Winds who layed the ball outside the area for Kate Nicolson who struck a fantastic finesse shot from around 30-yards, beating the young Stella Paton who had no chance with the effort. Thistle responded well and gradually began to work themselves back into the game building pressure onto the Celtic backline. A deep free kick from Addie Handley was floated into debutant Debbie To who’s first touch across the defender was placed onto the onrushing Robin Gallagher who drove into the box and showed great composure to place it passed the keeper to equalise. A well worked move from the team!

Unfortunately the wind was quickly knocked out of Thistle’s sails, with Celtic responding well with an instant reply to go 2-1 up. A ball back to the away keeper was cleared into the centre of the park with a flick on falling into Emma Craig behind the Thistle defence allowing her time to place the ball past Stella Paton with the one on one. After this the first half trickled out with Boroughmuir coming the closet between the two sides. The second half began similar to the first nothing separating the two sides. Although Celtic were again the next team to capitilise, with this time from a corner kick. An in swinging kick from Tegan Bowie reached Emily Shearer who scored from the centre of the penalty area. The introduction of top goal scorer Sam Duncan breathed new life into the home team and her audacious chip from a pinpoint through pass from Fiona Gibson looked destined for the net if not for a wonder save from the Hoops keeper Lisa Kerr. Celtic secured the win against the run of play when an intercepted pass from Monica Forsyth from Paton was played to Megan Wands who scored a pinpoint effort outside the area on her left foot. Full time 1-4.

TRANSFERS IN 2019

SAM DUNCAN

CONTRACT EXTENSION

Sammy was Boroughmuir Thistle's first teams top goal scorer last season, so it goes without saying just how fantastic it is to have her back in purple! Her pace up top is deadly & her ability to hit target is clear to see!

KATIE MCABE

CONTRACT EXTENSION

Katie is an extremely pacey player with a CRE system most would envy! Her fitness levels allow her to push on from her left back position to create an attacking threat. Great to have her back for season 2019

Last Five Results: Boroughmuir Thsitle 1-4 Celtic

Despite being unable to achieve promotion Celtic Academy finished second in the SWFL Division One South league leaders having pushed Hibernian Academy to the last game of the season. With Celtic’s Academy proving to become one of the hot spots for youth development within Scottish Football, their current squad show vast potential with key members; Rebecca McAllister, Chloe Warrington and Paige McAllister all involved with the national 17s squad . The previous fixtures between the two teams, was last seasons curtain raiser in which Celtic won a closely fought contest 20. A narrow 3-2 defeat last season and a recent 3-1 defeat in our recent pre season friendly.

THE INTERVIEW SAM DUNCAN Our second interview of the season is with Sam Duncan who now begins her 6th Season for Thistle. Sam was nominated for Division One South player of the season and when she is not running defenses ragged Sam works as a chef at Three Little Birds restaurant in Edinburgh. Q: Firstly Sam, When did you sign for Boroughmuir Thistle and how did it come about? I signed for the club 5/6 years ago, an old school friend got me back into footy, and I’ve never looked back since. Q: Tell us about your football career so far? My claims to fame are playing at Hampden and Tynecastle in school, winning the second division with thistle and getting over 100 goals for the club. Q: What’s it like to play for thistle every week It’s always exciting and never easy, but nothing worth having is ever easy! The hard work and determination from the girls keeps me going. Q: Who is the best trainer in the team? Tough question, everyone has upped their training in order to fight for the place in the squad competition is fierce this season!

The interview

Q: Who is the worst trainer in the team? Probably me as I’m always working, but I make up for it in effort. Q: What is your preferred position? I think the only position I can play is up top, not a conventional striker, but the never say die attitude does pay off for me.. sometimes Q: What is the best feature about your game? My pace and ability to run at defenders, and how much I love scoring goals especially the winning ones Q: What is the worst feature about your game? I can’t defend very well! I get far too much in to every game, and the want to win and do well can lead to frustrations, I’m trying to channel it in to positive energy! And support the girls! Q: What is your proudest moment in football so far? Coming of the bench after half time and scoring a hattrick to beat our biggest rivals at the time hearts, was very satisfying! Or getting a late winner always ranks high on my list! Q: Most embarrassing moment in football if you care to share? Getting a bit hot headed and being red carded (a thing of the past) Q: Favourite pre match meal? Usually have some porridge/ cereal and a couple of strong coffees, to get my energy up!

17

The interview

Q: Favourite post match meal? Got to be some noodles, or mums roast dinner! Q: Who is your football hero? I used to love Ronaldinho because his tricks were like nothing you’ve seen before, absolute class! Also the first time I Saw Steph Read play was pretty special! Q: What secondary school did you go to? James Gillespies. Q: What was your favourite subject at school? I liked Art And P.E Q: What boots do you wear? Adidas Q: What music do you listen to? Lana Del Rey on repeat, hip hop and indie stuff, anything really for a good song and dance! Q: What is your favourite film? Kill Bill Q: What are your aspirations in football? I just want to keep on scoring and improving and learning as much as possible, promotion would be great and we are in with a very good chance.

18

The interview

Q: What are you career aspirations outside football? I’m a chef so I would love to have my own place one day! Q: Most surprising fact about you? I’ve played against Kim Little, I have the worlds smallest fan club of 1 (my dad) and I don’t know the offside rule.. Thank you very much Sam, All the best for today and the rest of the season. Sam is still available to sponsor
