Ireland enjoys a strong reputation as a source of natural, high quality food, drink and ingredients and with our temperate climate and our green countryside, we have started from a strong position for sustainable food and drink production.
Working at both farm and manufacturing level, Origin Green clearly sets out Ireland’s ambition to become a world leader in the delivery of sustainable, high-quality food and drink products. Independently verified at every stage, this voluntary programme sees food manufacturers develop a sustainability plan that defines clear targets in key areas of sustainability, such as raw material sourcing, emissions, energy, waste, water, biodiversity and social sustainability including health and wellness.
With the global population expected to rise by 2.4 billion before the year 2050, the world will need to produce up to twice as much food from increasingly limited resources. It has been said that over the next 40 years, we will have to produce as much food as we have in the last 8,000. In order to meet these challenges it requires everyone involved in the food industry to commit to producing more from less, necessitating the adoption of more sustainable practices. It is with these challenges in mind which led to the launch of Origin Green in 2012, an initiative by Bord Bia, the Irish Food Board.

As an island on the edge of Europe, Ireland is surrounded by the cold clear waters of the wild Atlantic Ocean and some of the richest fishing grounds in the EU.
Our location puts us uniquely close to a diverse range of fresh, premium quality seafood including Irish whelks, crab, oysters, lobster, scallop, langoustines, mackerel and horse mackerel. We are also renowned for our Irish organic Atlantic salmon and mussels. Our seafood producers not only adhere to the EU’s high food safety standards, but through their membership of Origin Green - Ireland’s leading edge national food sustainability programme - they do so much more.
A proud member of the European Union (EU), our thriving fishing industry produces seafood according to the high food safety standards of the EU. An EUoperated quota system sets limits on the fish species that can be caught each year, supporting their longterm viability, while participation in environmental
quality schemes provides comprehensive assurances around the traceability, provenance and environmental management of Ireland’s wild fish stocks. Ireland has pioneering credentials in the farming of seafood and is one of the world’s leading producers of organic Atlantic salmon. It also extensively farms organic mussels which are grown and harvested along the country’s wild Atlantic coastline.
Ireland exports more than €600m worth of seafood to over 70 countries annually. Key exports for Ireland include Irish organic salmon, mackerel, langoustines, brown crab and organic mussels. Shellfish account for almost 40% of Irish seafood exports, followed by pelagic fish at over 30%, salmon at approximately 20% and whitefish accounting for the remainder of export sales.

Castletownbere Fishermen’s Co-Operative Society Ltd. was founded in 1968 by a group of fishermen who came together to purchase fuel in bulk. This led them to also amalgamating into a sales company to sell their fish.
In 1983, the Co-Op opened its first fish processing unit at the pier in Castletownbere. In 1990, they purchased a fish processing plant (1,500 sq. meters); in 2004 it extended the plant to 5,000 sq. meters where it now processes a large quantity of its members’ fish - reducing the number of links in the supply chain from fisherman to customer.
We are based in the South West coast of Ireland, adjacent to some of the richest fishing grounds in the world; landing a high quality product direct from its own fleet of fishing trawlers.
Our fleet consists of over 70 vessels, ranging from 10 to 40 meters; currently employing 250 people approximately. Turnover for 2021 was circa €70m, making us the biggest fish processors in Ireland.
Over 50 years of trading in fish, we have built markets for our products all over the world. We handle all species landed by our members which include all types of White fish, Pelagic species and Crustaceans.

We call this The Real Map of Ireland as you can see that Ireland’s marine territory extends far beyond our coastline up to 880,000km2, an area more than 10 times our land mass. The Real Map of Ireland shows Ireland’s current designated Irish Continental Shelf, which is one of the
largest seabed territories in Europe. The continental shelf is the extension of a State’s territorial waters, where the natural land extends under the sea to the outer edge of the continental margin beyond 200 nautical miles from the coastline baseline.
