Whenever zen is talked about, the first thing that comes to mind is a place where people can find their inner peace or a place for relaxation – like a place where we do our yoga or maybe the spa. Today, we will focus more on spaces in our own homes wherein this feel is achieved, other than our bedrooms, we are pretty sure, you would love going home and seeing a living room which is unclut tered, clean, organized and really relaxing. As a friend of ours say, it is usually the scented candles that do the trick.
But, in the real world where kids are present and lighting candles is not really an option, designers often go for the lighting treatment which the house will extrude a feel of comfort and zen.

To see the world in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wildflower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.

A zen inspired design is all about natural colours, in soft tones, such as white, grey, shades of beige or pink beige, which have the power to in duce a sense of relaxation and calmness. Chromatic harmony between the various elements is very important, as well as the visual continuity between walls, furniture and floors.
In order to add contour to a monochrome room, you may always choose to combine a dominant colour with matching objects and textured textiles such as white with moleskin or beige with rosewood. To create diversity combine two matching colours or play with degrades of your favorite colour.

For a fully relaxing space, replace harsh florescent lights with calming, nature-inspired or candle lights. Place different sources of light which will al low you to control the intensi ty and the areas to be lighted. Avoid projecting a strong direct light from the ceiling and take advantage of all pos sibilities to mix a floor lamp, a lamp set and indirect light.
Zen style furniture is charac terized by simple and clear lines, avoiding complicated detail and excess ornamenta tion. Storage pieces (closets, cupboards, chests of drawers) may be brought to life if paint ed in colours matching the rest of the interior.
For the bed area, wall-mount ed reading lights are very practical as they can be oriented to emphasize the respective area, unlike bedside lamps which are flexible. If you like diffused light, you may opt for some nice candles.
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes. Marcel Proust

my City Oasis
by Britta Bonette
Finding a quiet place where you are surrounded by beautiful and restful sounds and sights of nature, is almost a must in our fastpaced world. Recently, I found myself moving back to a busy metro in the Pacific Northwest but was lucky to find a small but loveley apartment. I am a gardener at heart and equipped with a bright green thumb, so I was grateful to have found this little piece of urban paradise. I have a corner balcony next to an unuccupied and undeveloped piece of land, so I have lots of green to look at. This is truly a saving grace for me, as this my little “oasis” has given me so much joy and peace. Until I can find a “real” garden of my own, this is my flowering heaven in the midst of all the the noise and chaos.
A bumble bee caught buzzing around in my Nasturtiums all summer long, feverishly bulding their nectar reserv.

My all time favourite is the Morning Glory. Every morning it surprises me with a brand new gorgeus flower opening its bright eye to the sky.
I am sharing this short pictoral story about my oasis to show the joy this has given me. I have so much love for all the growing plants that surrounds me and the beauty and peace I feel while spending time in my flower garden.
Ever since I was a little girl, I would find a corner somewhere where I could find peace, solitude and even some room for imagination, play and fanatsy. It could be by the rocks down by the lake or in the forest under a tree. Finding comfort in solitude is a wonderful gift. In our noisy, distracting and electronic environment we live in, it’s important to have that special corner where we can have our own oasis and to really notice the world by out feet; listening to the insects on the ground (did you know even ants have a voice?), the birds, crickets, dragonflies, bees and even an occational fly. Go out there today, find a corner in your world where you can have your own quiet oasis

where it all began...
brought Korkyra to the hitherto un named island and, in marital bliss, of fered her name to the place: Korkyra, which gradually evolved to Kerkyra.
GEOGRAPHY
With the passage of time the island may have changed, but we can still feel the spirit of a distant glorious past . Its rich multi-cultural heritage, its historic monuments, its stunning natural landscape, its crystal clear seas, and its excellent weather explain why Corfu is one of the most cosmopolitan Mediterranean destinations weaving a powerful spell on its visitors.
Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is the second largest of the Ionian Islands and, including its small satellite islands, forms the edge of the northwestern frontier of Greece. The island is part of the Corfu regional unit, and is administered as a single municipality. The municipality includes the island Corfu and the smaller islands Ereikoussa, Mathraki and Othonoi. The principal city of the island and seat of the municipality (pop. 32,095) is also named Corfu. Corfu is home to the Ionian University.
The island is bound with the history of Greece from the beginning of Greek mythology. Its Greek name, Kerkyra or Korkyra, is related to two powerful water symbols: Poseidon, god of the sea, and Asopos, an important Greek mainland river. According to myth, Poseidon fell in love with the beautiful nymph Korkyra, daughter of Asopus and river nymph Metope, and abducted her. Poseidon
The north-eastern coastline of Corfu lies off the coast of Sarandë, Albania, from which it is separated by straits varying in width from 3 to 23 km (2 to 14 miles), while the south-east side of the island lies off the coast of Thes protia, Greece. The name “Corfu”, an Italian version of the Byzantine Κορυφώ (Koryphō), meaning “city of the peaks”, derives from the Greek Κορυφαί (Koryphai) (crests or peaks), denoting the two peaks of Palaio Frourio. Its shape resembles a sickle (drepanē, δρεπάνι), to which it was compared by the ancients: the con cave side, with the city and harbour of Corfu in the centre, lies toward the Albanian coast. With the island’s area estimated at 588 km2 (227 sq mi), it runs approximately 64 km (40 mi) long, with greatest breadth at around 32 km (20 mi).
Two high and well-defined ranges di vide the island into three districts, of which the northern is mountainous, the central undulating, and the south ern low-lying. The more important of the two ranges, that of Pantokrator (Παντοκράτωρ – the ancient Istone) stretches east and west from Cape Falacro to Cape Psaromita, and attains its greatest elevation in the summit of the same name.
The second range culminates in the mountain of Santi Jeca, or Santa Dec ca, as it is called by misinterpretation of the Greek designation or the Ten Saints. The whole island, composed as it is of various limestone formations, presents great diversity of surface, and views from more elevated spots are magnificent. Beaches are found in Agios Gordis, the Korission lagoon,
The island’s history is laden with battles and conquests. The legacy of these struggles is visible in the form of castles punctuating strategic loca tions across the island. Two of these castles enclose its capital, which is the only city in Greece to be surrounded in such a way. As a result, Corfu’s capital has been officially declared a Kastropolis by the Greek government. From medieval times and into the 17th century, the island was recognised as a bulwark of the European States against the Ottoman Empire and be came one of the most fortified places in Europe. Corfu repulsed several Turkish sieges, before falling under British rule following the Napoleonic Wars. Corfu was eventually ceded by the British Empire along with the remaining islands of the United States of the Ionian Islands, and unification with modern Greece was concluded in 1864 under the Treaty of London.
2
Agios Georgios, Marathia, Kassiopi, Sidari, Palaiokastritsa and many oth ers. Corfu is located near the Kefalonia geological fault formation; earthquakes have occurred. Neither Corfu city or the countryside of the island have lost their traditional architecture hailing from the 16th century.
Corfu’s coastline spans 217 kilometres including capes; its highest point is Mount Pantokrator and the second Stravoskiadi, at 849 metres (2,785 ft). The full extent of capes and promon tories take in Agia Aikaterini, Drastis to the north, Lefkimmi and Asprokavos
to the southeast, and Megachoro to the south. Two islands are also to be found at a middle point of Gouvia and Corfu Bay, which extends across much of the eastern shore of the island; are known as Lazareto and Ptychia.
LAZARETTO ISLAND
Lazaretto Island, formerly known as Aghios Dimitrios, is located two nauti cal miles northeast of Corfu; the island has an area of 17.5 acres and comes under the administration of the Greek National Tourist Organization. During
Venetian rule in the early 16th century, a monastery was built on the islet and a leprosarium established later in the century, after which the island was named. In 1798, during the French occupation, the islet was occupied by the Russo-Turkish fleet, who ran it as a military hospital. During the British occupation, in 1814, the leprosarium was once again opened after renovations, and following Enosis in 1864 the leprosarium again saw occasional use.
FLORA
Homer identifies seven plants that adorn the garden of Alcinous: wild olive, pear, pomegranate, apple, fig and grape vine. Of these the apple and the pear are of very inferior in Corfu; the others thrive, together with all the fruit trees known in southern Europe, with addition of the kumquat, loquat and prickly pear. When undisturbed by cultivation, the myrtle, arbutus, bay and holm oak form a rich brushwood, along with fir and Turkey oak in the hills.
Corfu has a huge variety of plants and flowers. It is known as the green island, but “green” cannot possibly describe the multitude of greens one can see of Corfu all year round
