Zen and the art of authentic living

When we see the path ahead we no longer need to know were we are going. Anonymous

But, in the real world where kids are present and lighting candles is not really an option, designers often go for the lighting treatment which the house will extrude a feel of comfort and zen.

Whenever zen is talked about, the first thing that comes to mind is a place where people can find their inner peace or a place for relaxation – like a place where we do our yoga or maybe the spa. Today, we will focus more on spaces in our own homes wherein this feel is achieved, other than our bedrooms, we are pretty sure, you would love going home and seeing a living room which is unclut tered, clean, organized and really relaxing. As a friend of ours say, it is usually the scented candles that do the trick.

A zen inspired design is all about natural colours, in soft tones, such as white, grey, shades of beige or pink beige, which have the power to in duce a sense of relaxation and calmness. Chromatic harmony between the various elements is very important, as well as the visual continuity between walls, furniture and floors.

In order to add contour to a monochrome room, you may always choose to combine a dominant colour with matching objects and textured textiles such as white with moleskin or beige with rosewood. To create diversity combine two matching colours or play with degrades of your favorite colour.

To see the world in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wildflower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.

Zen style furniture is charac terized by simple and clear lines, avoiding complicated detail and excess ornamenta tion. Storage pieces (closets, cupboards, chests of drawers) may be brought to life if paint ed in colours matching the rest of the interior.

For the bed area, wall-mount ed reading lights are very practical as they can be oriented to emphasize the respective area, unlike bedside lamps which are flexible. If you like diffused light, you may opt for some nice candles.

For a fully relaxing space, replace harsh florescent lights with calming, nature-inspired or candle lights. Place different sources of light which will al low you to control the intensi ty and the areas to be lighted. Avoid projecting a strong direct light from the ceiling and take advantage of all pos sibilities to mix a floor lamp, a lamp set and indirect light.

CitymyOasisbyBrittaBonette

inding a quiet place where you are surrounded by beautiful and restful sounds and sights of nature, is almost a must in our fastpaced world. Recently, I found myself moving back to a busy metro in the Pacific Northwest but was lucky to find a small but loveley apartment. I am a gardener at heart and equipped with a bright green thumb, so I was grateful to have found this little piece of urban paradise. I have a corner balcony next to an unuccupied and undeveloped piece of land, so I have lots of green to look at. This is truly a saving grace for me, as this my little “oasis” has given me so much joy and peace. Until I can find a “real” garden of my own, this is my flowering heaven in the midst of all the the noise and chaos.

I am sharing this short pictoral story about my oasis to show the joy this has given me. I have so much love for all the growing plants that surrounds me and the beauty and peace I feel while spending time in my flower garden.

~ Luther Burbank

Ever since I was a little girl, I would find a corner somewhere where I could find peace, solitude and even some room for imagination, play and fanatsy. It could be by the rocks down by the lake or in the forest under a tree. Finding comfort in solitude is a wonderful gift. In our noisy, distracting and electronic environment we live in, it’s important to have that special corner where we can have our own oasis and to really notice the world by out feet; listening to the insects on the ground (did you know even ants have a voice?), the birds, crickets, dragonflies, bees and even an occational fly. Go out there today, find a corner in your world where you can have your own quiet oasis

My all time favourite is the Morning Glory. Every morning it surprises me with a brand new gorgeus flower opening its bright eye to the sky.

he foundation of the Taylor Museum collection is largely rooted in traditional Latin American and Native American works, areas in which Alice Bemis Taylor held a particular interest. Santos, depictions of saints in both two and threedimensional forms, make up a significant percentage of Taylor’s original gift. The Fine Arts Center has maintained this legacy through the ongoing acquisition of these objects over the decades. This selection represents some of the most recently acquired santos and demonstrates that the art form is very much alive and is both reverential to tradition as well as innovative to appeal to a contemporary audience.

Corfu’s coastline spans 217 kilometres including capes; its highest point is Mount Pantokrator and the second Stravoskiadi, at 849 metres (2,785 ft). The full extent of capes and promon tories take in Agia Aikaterini, Drastis to the north, Lefkimmi and Asprokavos

brought Korkyra to the hitherto un named island and, in marital bliss, of fered her name to the place: Korkyra, which gradually evolved to Kerkyra.

Two high and well-defined ranges di vide the island into three districts, of which the northern is mountainous, the central undulating, and the south ern low-lying. The more important of the two ranges, that of Pantokrator (Παντοκράτωρ – the ancient Istone) stretches east and west from Cape Falacro to Cape Psaromita, and attains its greatest elevation in the summit of the same name.

Agios Georgios, Marathia, Kassiopi, Sidari, Palaiokastritsa and many oth ers. Corfu is located near the Kefalonia geological fault formation; earthquakes have occurred. Neither Corfu city or the countryside of the island have lost their traditional architecture hailing from the 16th century.

C

orfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is the second largest of the Ionian Islands and, including its small satellite islands, forms the edge of the northwestern frontier of Greece. The island is part of the Corfu regional unit, and is administered as a single municipality. The municipality includes the island Corfu and the smaller islands Ereikoussa, Mathraki and Othonoi. The principal city of the island and seat of the municipality (pop. 32,095) is also named Corfu. Corfu is home to the Ionian University.

The north-eastern coastline of Corfu lies off the coast of Sarandë, Albania, from which it is separated by straits varying in width from 3 to 23 km (2 to 14 miles), while the south-east side of the island lies off the coast of Thes protia, Greece. The name “Corfu”, an Italian version of the Byzantine Κορυφώ (Koryphō), meaning “city of the peaks”, derives from the Greek Κορυφαί (Koryphai) (crests or peaks), denoting the two peaks of Palaio Frourio. Its shape resembles a sickle (drepanē, δρεπάνι), to which it was compared by the ancients: the con cave side, with the city and harbour of Corfu in the centre, lies toward the Albanian coast. With the island’s area estimated at 588 km2 (227 sq mi), it runs approximately 64 km (40 mi) long, with greatest breadth at around 32 km (20 mi).

With the passage of time the island may have changed, but we can still feel the spirit of a distant glorious past . Its rich multi-cultural heritage, its historic monuments, its stunning natural landscape, its crystal clear seas, and its excellent weather explain why Corfu is one of the most cosmopolitan Mediterranean destinations weaving a powerful spell on its visitors. 2 guide:

Venetian rule in the early 16th century, a monastery was built on the islet and a leprosarium established later in the century, after which the island was named. In 1798, during the French occupation, the islet was occupied by the Russo-Turkish fleet, who ran it as a military hospital. During the British occupation, in 1814, the leprosarium was once again opened after renovations, and following Enosis in 1864 the leprosarium again saw occasional use.

The second range culminates in the mountain of Santi Jeca, or Santa Dec ca, as it is called by misinterpretation of the Greek designation or the Ten Saints. The whole island, composed as it is of various limestone formations, presents great diversity of surface, and views from more elevated spots are magnificent. Beaches are found in Agios Gordis, the Korission lagoon,

to the southeast, and Megachoro to the south. Two islands are also to be found at a middle point of Gouvia and Corfu Bay, which extends across much of the eastern shore of the island; are known as Lazareto and Ptychia.

Lazaretto Island, formerly known as Aghios Dimitrios, is located two nauti cal miles northeast of Corfu; the island has an area of 17.5 acres and comes under the administration of the Greek National Tourist Organization. During

The island’s history is laden with battles and conquests. The legacy of these struggles is visible in the form of castles punctuating strategic loca tions across the island. Two of these castles enclose its capital, which is the only city in Greece to be surrounded in such a way. As a result, Corfu’s capital has been officially declared a Kastropolis by the Greek government. From medieval times and into the 17th century, the island was recognised as a bulwark of the European States against the Ottoman Empire and be came one of the most fortified places in Europe. Corfu repulsed several Turkish sieges, before falling under British rule following the Napoleonic Wars. Corfu was eventually ceded by the British Empire along with the remaining islands of the United States of the Ionian Islands, and unification with modern Greece was concluded in 1864 under the Treaty of London.

LAZARETTO ISLAND

Corfu has a huge variety of plants and flowers. It is known as the green island, but “green” cannot possibly describe the multitude of greens one can see of Corfu all year round

Homer identifies seven plants that adorn the garden of Alcinous: wild olive, pear, pomegranate, apple, fig and grape vine. Of these the apple and the pear are of very inferior in Corfu; the others thrive, together with all the fruit trees known in southern Europe, with addition of the kumquat, loquat and prickly pear. When undisturbed by cultivation, the myrtle, arbutus, bay and holm oak form a rich brushwood, along with fir and Turkey oak in the hills.

The island is bound with the history of Greece from the beginning of Greek mythology. Its Greek name, Kerkyra or Korkyra, is related to two powerful water symbols: Poseidon, god of the sea, and Asopos, an important Greek mainland river. According to myth, Poseidon fell in love with the beautiful nymph Korkyra, daughter of Asopus and river nymph Metope, and abducted her. Poseidon

If you start out on a path and turn your feet a quarter of an inch to the left, five feet later you end up in pretty much the same spot. But five miles later, that subtle shift has brought you to a completely different destination. A change of heart can be subtle, it can be small, it can be imperceptible at first, like a change in attitude from “I have to,” to “I get to.” But this can completely change your destiny.

Theguard.battered red and white “stop” sign suddenly shown bright as a reminder to stop the mind chatter and turn back to the heart. As did, I slid back in my chair and thought, “Why don’t just enjoy the sunshine streaming through the window, and the giggles of the children, and be here now in this moment?”

When arrived in India in late 1970 I wanted to spend all my time in meditation. I remember clearly when was taken with a group of other aspirants to a back area of the upper garden and asked to do some heavy la bor. I was told, “If you want to learn to meditate well, start shoveling.” This is a similar lesson. By learning to be conscious doing the ordinary we strengthen our minds and prepare it to contain the higher states of Meditationexperience

The heart gets to the mind has to

He “GET’s to” sleep in his cab??!! humbly watched my “have to’s” wash by with the flood of children chattering on their way to school. Mine is not a poker face. The look of shock and pity on my face must have been obvious because he continued now with a more reassuring tone. “It’s really a good life for me, and it doesn’t matter because I live alone, so no one is waiting for me at home or anything.”

Instead of feeling lonely for himself, he was thankful for his “non-family” that they did not have to put up with his schedule?!

By Dr. Steve Auerbach

“What do get if do?” A slight shift of words, a dramatic shift in perception.

He smiled back as if he was describing a vacation at Club Med: “I get to go home at 6:00 in the evening and make myself dinner –love cooking. love rice; it’s my favorite thing to cook. Then get to sleep for a couple of hours before have to go back to work. And sometimes,” (now he prefaced this part like he was about to let me in on the cherry topping of a double decker fudge sundae), “there is an hour or two

How you do the little things is how you do everything

My jaw dropped. “When do you sleep?” I thought about how had been upset with myself that stayed up an hour later than I had wanted to the night before. Meanwhile, this guy had just been starting work!

O ften hear people say they want to do BIG things. How can change my life? How can improve the world? How can I save humanity? How can attain enlightenment? My answer… start by cleaning up your room. Irecently enjoyed an extraordinary cab ride that took me far beyond my intended Mydestination...morningbegan on the wrong side of the bed with a litany of laments clouding my mood: “If I lived with family, they would drive me to the airport and I would not have to take a cab. I am so lonely…” “If had more money, I could park my car at the airport instead of having to take a cab...I am tired of living like a college student…” “If I didn’t have to work this morning before my flight…if lived in a nicer part of town…if I had gotten out of the house ten minutes earlier…”

The minute did that, became aware of the man sitting next to me. Seconds earlier, he had been the cab driver taking me to the airport. Someone worth a two-dollar tip and not a second thought. Suddenly, present in the moment, recognized him as a radiant spirit of effervescent, quiet joy. It was impossible now to ignore the peace of being in his presence. How had missed it before?

“Oh, well, I work as a security guard from 10:00pm to 5:00am, and then drive my

was a neophyte to the spiritual process at the time and was eager to apply every teach ing heard. What found was that this allowed me to have a focus to tangibly live the teach ings. It became a practice in itself and I have kept it up to this day.

So, you want a spiritual experience? Start by cleaning your own room.

...my own heart keeps waking me up seeing more of what I already have, right here, right now....

Your personal space reflects your own selfimage. Have you ever visited or seen a pic ture of a Zen monastery? The way everything is made and used day to day is part of their practice. Everything is simple, clean, and order ly. Objects and actions are treated as opportu nities for spiritual practice.

“Yes,” I observed with him. “Unusual for so early in the day.”

People ask me all the time if learning to access the heart will help them get more of what they want. Right now, my own heart keeps waking me up seeing more of what already have, right here, right now. I am discovering that happiness does not come from getting what I want. It comes from responding to what have in alignment with my spirit.

A teacher once said to me that feeling entitled to something robs you of the power to create it. What do you take for granted, or feel entitled to? Clean water? So much of the world’s population does not have access to clean water. Reading these words? The vast majority of human beings on our planet are illiterate. Can we really take anything for granted?

As we learn to see the duality of inner vs. outer life and we recognize that it is all one space, we begin to see the magnificent truth that the very God we seek lives within us, as us. The ordinary is quite extraordinary when seen through spiritually mature eyes. The world in and around us is nothing but the Di vine made manifest. We learn to respect that by respecting our personal space.

This last one really hit home as my cab was forced to stop at a school crosswalk. I nervously eyed the clock...a couple green lights, run a few yellows, scramble through the terminal juggling my bags...it was going to be tight! The clock ticked on...the meter kept counting...more and more kids crossed...I felt myself lean forward in the front seat of the cab, as if my meager 110lbs slouching toward the windshield would move us through the children faster. What was the cabby going to do, run them over for me? It was then that caught the absurdity of my thoughts, and I stopped. Thank you, crossing

Again looking to erase my lingering pity, he continued... “Well, I actually have a wife and five children. But they live in Jordan. And I want all of my children to go to University. There was not a high enough paying job in Jordan for me to send them to school, so I work like this here for 9 months out of the year, and I get to-” (there was that “get to” phrase again)“spend three months with them. So far two of my children are already in university, and the third is graduating and accepted into university this year!” He smiled at me a proud and toothless grin, with a joy that you would expect from someone who is about to collect the Nobel Peace Prize or an Oscar for best picture. This man had definitely taken his life circumstances and directed the best movie could imagine with Everywherethem.

I thinking? was flooded with gratitude, compassion, even embarrassment at my own sense of selfish entitlement.

“Not really,” he said, matter-of-factly. “Lately it has been warming up at 5:00am.” He wasn’t “correcting” my response, rather marveling at the sun’s splendor with the wideeyed wonder of a child. As if to say, “Isn’t that cool?”

With friends and family waiting for me on both sides of my airport departures and arrivals, I was humbled to silence. With a job that afforded me 8 hours of sleep every night if I choose to take it, choked on my choo choo train of prior pity. What was
