TLOKWENG FTTX PROJECT NEARS ITS COMPLETION
Mr Ofentse Nkwane Project Manager
We are excited to announce that Tlokweng Fibre-ToThe-X (FTTX) project is nearing its completion In an interview with Mr Ofentse Nkwane, the Project Manager spearheading this project emphasised that the project started in September 2023 with an aim of connecting Tlokweng businesses with optical fibre.
How far are we with the FTTX project?
The Tlokweng FTTX project is on its completion phase, where we are testing to check if the fibre infrastructure reaches businesses. So far, the tests have yielded fruitful results, because businesses at Oasis Mall in Tlokweng are well connected "
What difficulties did we run into while you were working on this project?
Our biggest challenge was working under harsh weather conditions. The country experienced heat waves at the time and those altered our work routine
Our contractors had to start work earlier than usual to beat the heatwave hours and they had to knock off early when the heat was totally unbearable
Another challenge was that the materials usually took time to reach Botswana, and this also put a change in the project duration and slightly affected the project closure estimation time ”
What contractor was engaged to provision FTTX in Tlokweng?
BoFiNet collaborated with two (2) sub-contractors, namely ICT Dynamics and Nextcom ICT Dynamics spread the infrastructure coverage and Nextcom provided the active equipment Both these companies are 100% Batswana wned businesses.
Did BoFiNet consult the public when rolling out the FTTX project in Tlokweng?
“Before the project commenced, we first went to the Tlokweng Kgosi, the Councilor, retailers, customers and Tlokweng community and informed them about this project, its intentions, benefits, and when it will be concluded for their usage All the stakeholders received us with open arms
How is this project going to benefit Batswana?
As we are leaving in the era of industrial revolution, it is going to be very easy and quick for all the retail shops to be connected. Batswana in businesses can now buy any bandwidth they want for their shops"
In conclusion, despite the challenges, the FTTX project is well on time and going as anticipated.

FACTS ABOUT OPTIC FIBRE CABLES
Fibre optic installations are quite reliable, but the glass core in a fibre optic cable is fragile Manufacturers have been able to design and manufacture the core material to be somewhat elastic and resilient to bending However, that doesn’t mean that they are indestructible
There are several signs that may indicate a bad fibre optic cable These include a complete loss of signal, intermittent connectivity issues, reduced data transfer speeds, or a significant increase in error rates
No matter how well-planned and well-built a fibre optic line is, chances are that sooner or later it might get damaged, interrupting the availability of the network it supplies The most common reason for interrupted fibre optic service is fibre optic cable cuts The list of causes for fibre cuts is a long one
The good news is that there is little else extreme weather can do to a fibre optic line apart from physically cutting it Unlike copper wires, optic fibre does not rust and can operate even in extremely low temperatures
It is hard to pinpoint the motivation behind acts of vandalism, whether it is just blind rage or the desire to make some money stealing and reselling fibre optic network components. Regardless of the reason behind it, one should do their best to protect fibre optic cables and other network components from vandals
