I am also humbled and excited to lead this remarkable organisation as the new Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Since its inception in 2013, BoFiNet's journey has been marked by innovation, resilience, and a commitment to service excellence. I would also like to announce that in October, BoFiNet celebrated an incredible milestone, 10 years of existence. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of each and every Motswana who has been part of our journey. Over the past decade, BoFiNet has played a pivotal role in connecting Botswana to the globe and I am proud to be part of this historic moment.

BOFINET LEADS BOTSWANA THROUGH THE SMARTBOTS VILLAGE CONNECTIVITY PROJECT This visionary initiative by the Government of Botswana seeks to cultivate a smart and sustainable society by enhancing the nation's digital and innovation ecosystem, thereby fostering economic diversification and bolstering competitiveness.

Under this project, 1,138 premises across 144 villages will gain free access to WIFI. This endeavour stands as a testament to Botswana's unwavering commitment to the well-being of its citizens, particularly those residing in rural and remote regions.

On the 18 of October 2023, His Excellency, Dr. Mokgweetsi E. K. Masisi, the President of the Republic of Botswana, launched the SmartBots Village Connectivity Project in Maun, with a live broadcast extending to Palapye, Molepolole, and 55 other constituencies across the nation.

The event was a grand affair, with the three(3) primary venues seamlessly interlinked. His Honour, The Vice President of Botswana, Mr. Slumber Tsogwane, presided over the proceedings in Palapye, while the Minister of Communications, Knowledge, and Technology, Honourable Thulagano Segokgo, graced the event in Molepolole Kgotla.

The SmartBots project is more than mere connectivity; it is a catalyst for economic diversification and heightened competitiveness. By providing digital access to Government facilities and villages, it opens new vistas for education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Botswana is poised to assume a leadership role in the digital revolution, further solidifying its position on the global stage. We firmly believe in the power of informed and engaged communities.

The SmartBots project transcends conventional connectivity efforts. It represents a holistic strategy aimed at bridging the digital divide and ensuring that no one is left behind in the age of digital transformation. NAMIBIAN DELEGATION VISITS BOFINET

In a remarkable display of collaboration and commitment to advancing the digital landscape in the region, BOFINET had the privilege of hosting a distinguished delegation from Namibia, led by the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Dr. Peyavali Mushelenga. The visit, which took place on Tuesday,8 th August 2023, was a testament to the strong ties and shared vision for enhancing ICT infrastructure in our neighbouring countries.

During their visit, the Namibian delegation was given a comprehensive tour of key projects under our ministry. The highlight of this tour was their visit to the Digital Delta Data Centre (DDDC), a state-of-the-art facility that occupies a vast 1,000 square meters and houses 400 racks. This data centre is a pivotal component of Botswana's ICT ecosystem and plays a central role in our national strategy to effectively connect the country's priority sectors with regional value chains. Notably, the DDDC not only empowers Botswana to have greater control over its data but also serves as a catalyst for socio-economic transformation.

One of the most recent milestones for this flagship project was the comprehensive readiness assessment conducted by the Uptime Institute, a globally recognised accrediting body for data centres. This assessment was aimed at verifying the seamless functionality of all integrated data centre sub-systems, ensuring that it adheres to the highest industry standards. The Namibian delegation, headed by Dr. Mushelenga, expressed deep fascination and admiration for the DDDC, recognising its strategic importance in fostering digital growth in the region.

Their visit underscored the importance of such cross-border collaborations in strengthening the digital infrastructure of our nations and promoting mutual growth.

Following this momentous visit, a groundbreaking ceremony marked the commencement of the Oodi-Machaneng Optic Fibre Project. This significant event was presided over by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Knowledge, and Technology, Mr. Thulagano Segokgo, and we were honoured to have the esteemed presence of Honourable Peyavali Mushelenga, as a special guest. The OodiMachaneng Optic Fibre Project is set to enhance the connectivity between our two (2) countries, further strengthening our digital ties.

This historic visit by the Namibian delegation reaffirms our commitment to fostering collaboration and innovation in the ICT sector. We believe that such partnerships are pivotal in driving the growth of the digital economy, not only within our borders but across the region. As we continue to expand our horisons and share our expertise, we look forward to even more exciting developments on the horison.

BOTSWANA’S TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT SOARS WITH THE OODI-MACHANENG PROJECT On the 9 th of August 2023, Botswana marked a significant milestone with the groundbreaking ceremony for the Oodi-Machaneng Project at Oodi Kgotla. Led by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Knowledge, and Technology, Mr. Thulagano Segokgo, this event highlights our commitment to advancing technology infrastructure.

The Oodi-Machaneng project signifies a major leap forward in Botswana's telecommunications sector, promising transformative changes. The project is going to cover the following areas: Oodi, Machaneng, Modipane, Dikwididi, Mabalane, Sikwane, Mmathubudukwane, Ramonaka, Malotwane, Oliphant’s Drift, Ramotlabaki, Mmaphashalala, Dovedale, Kudumatse, Makwate, Parrs Halt Border Post.

BoFiNet, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications, Knowledge and Technology, alongside esteemed organisations, proudly showcased our significant contributions to Botswana's scientific landscape during the National Science Week (NSW) commemorations, st th held at Letlhakeng Bus Rank from August 21 to 25 , 2023. As the official connectivity partner of the event, BoFiNet provided a generous one (1) gig of free internet capacity and engaged with the Letlhakeng community.

Our dedication to facilitating social and economic transformation is evident through our innovative information and ICT solutions. National Science Week offered a valuable platform to educate people on the advantages of technology, inspiring both students and the public to actively engage with and comprehend the world of science. On the 22 nd -23rd of September 2023, the Gaborone Consumer Electronics and Technology (GCET) Show lit up the Fields Mall with the latest technological innovations. Among the stars of the event was Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet), a telecom giant that sponsored and exhibited Fibre-To-The Home (FTTH), Fibre-To-The- Business (FTTB) solutions and the Digital Delta Data Centre (DDDC) services The GCET show brought together tech enthusiasts, professionals, and entrepreneurs from Botswana and beyond. BoFiNet, known for its pivotal role in Botswana's connectivity, showcased its dedication to providing cutting-edge solutions for residential and business customers. BoFiNet's FTTH and FTTB initiatives have been game-changers, bridging the digital divide and redefining how Botswana connects to the world. BoFiNet, as both a sponsor and exhibitor, grabbed the spotlight, offering a glimpse of the future of high-speed internet access. BOFINET FIBRE-TO-THE-HOME PROJECT CONTINUES TO TRANSFORM INTERNET ACCESS BoFiNet is actively contributing to the development of smart cities, enhancing security, and assisting in the fight against rising crime rates. Homeowners can now invest in security devices supported by fiber optics, ensuring seamless security monitoring by professionals.

Marcia Mangadi Head of Sales Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) is paving the way for a bright digital future through strategic investments in Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) infrastructure. This initiative aligns with the government's Maitlamo Policy, a comprehensive plan aimed at bridging the digital divide and fostering an information-driven society. The policy's objectives include promoting ecommerce, enhancing e-governance, and providing accessible education and e-health services, all of which rely on a robust broadband infrastructure, with FTTH leading the charge.

In addition to the Maitlamo Policy, Botswana's Vision 2036 underscores the vital role of information and communication technology (ICT) in creating job opportunities, driving economic growth, and improving the efficiency of the public and private sectors. FTTH, which offers more than just high-speed internet, plays a crucial role in realising these ambitious goals.

The global demand for FTTH infrastructure has surged due to the rapid pace of digital transformation. Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, cloud computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), and data centers are now integral to our daily lives, necessitating fast, reliable, and cost-effective internet connections.

The importance of FTTH infrastructure became even more evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. The benefits of fast and reliable internet access were highlighted as businesses, education, and healthcare services shifted online, effectively keeping Botswana connected during a global crisis.

Small businesses have also benefited from FTTH, enabling them to engage in online trade from the comfort of their homes, reducing operational costs, and increasing profitability.

This, in turn, significantly contributes to fostering economic growth and entrepreneurship within the country.

FTTH's capacity to deliver high-speed, highcapacity internet is essential for building global economies in the 21st century, transforming the way content is streamed, and enabling global engagement and communication.

Furthermore, BoFiNet’s FTTH infrastructure empowers citizen-owned service providers by offering open access at an affordable price.

This promotes equitable access and enables local suppliers to compete successfully in the market, providing services and prices comparable to those of foreign-owned providers. THE IMPACTS OF FIBRE CABLE VANDALISM ON COMMUNITIES Fibre is a glass (silica) cable the size of human hair, that transmits signals using light. The fibre cable and its infrastructure have come under increased vandalism attack in the recent past.

What is vandalism?

Vandalism is any activity where one gains unauthorised access, with intention to steal and/or damage any part of the fibre cable infrastructure.

There are perpetrators who gain illegal access to BoFiNet manholes to cut the fibre cables.At times this is cut by thieves who mistake the fibre cable for copper. Unlike copper, fibre cable has no scrap value. Of concern is the situation where a fibre cable is cut, removed from the ducts, and left somewhere close to the scene.

Vandalism of fibre optic cables or fibre cutting is a widespread issue that has a negative impact on communities all around the world. It is essential to deal with this problem proactively as a responsible business dedicated to the welfare of our external stakeholders. Mr Keolebogile Totang, our Filed Services Manager gave an insight on the numerous facets of vandalism, its effects on our communities, and methods to stop it.

BoFiNet operates a fibre network that connects villages, towns and cities across the country as well as to customer premises.

BOFINET as a wholesale provider, carries other telecommunication providers like Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Public Telephone Operators (PTOs).

In some of the instances, there are people who either deliberately cut down the poles carrying fibre to harvest honey. The same is done where fires are kindled inside manholes to harvest honey which later burn the infrastructure.

These acts of vandalism are widespread across the country. However, the areas that are mostly affected by these acts of vandalism are the greater Gaborone areas which include Old Naledi, Kgale View, A1 route along Gaborone – Lobatse, Lobatse, Gaborone Block 5, 6 & 9, Mogoditshane Lesirane (Tsolamosese), Mogoditshanemetsimotlhabe-Molepolole-Letlhakeng routes, Molepolole, Gabane – Thamaga – kanye route, etc.

What are the impacts of vandalism?

Fibre has the capacity to carry a lot of digital traffic. One can be sure that almost all the digital traffic in Botswana will have traversed BoFiNet fibre and network infrastructure somewhere between the end user and the service provider. These include but limited to banking services, mobile services, retail shops payments and stock management systems, eGov services, social media, etc. When a fibre vandalism or any other fibre cut happens, the economy of the country is affected. Depending on the institutions affected, the security of the country may also be placed at risk.

Even though BoFiNet has built its network to be resilient to failures, there are portions of the network that cannot be protected due to either terrain or location. For example, services going into individual homes or businesses cannot be protected, so the safeguarding of this infrastructure becomes critical.

What are the security measures that BoFiNet has put in place?

To curb the rising acts of vandalism, BoFiNet has come up with the following measures. All BoFiNet and partners contractors are always supposed to carry a job card that authorises them to carry out services on the fibre infrastructure. Normal works will be carried out only during working hours. Only critical faults will be carried out at night. All contractors are supposed to have branded vehicles that bear the BoFiNet Contractor sticker. All individuals on site will be identifiable through their employees’ Identity cards and national identification documents like Omang and passports.

What is your plea to the public?

LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES have been engaged in this exercise. Therefore, anyone who sees any suspicious activities should report immediately to the nearest police station or call our Network Operation Centre (NOC) at +267 3926567. Anyone working on the network infrastructure must always have a job card with them or a valid BoFiNet identity card Whoever fails to produce these should be reported to the law enforcement agencies.

Any perpetrators who are arrested will be charged with the COMMUNICATIONS REGULATORY AUTHORITY ACT, 2012. Some of the penalties that may be meted to someone who has been found guilty of these offenses include a minimum fine of P50,000 and a maximum of one (1) million Pula or a prison sentence of a minimum five (5) years and a maximum 15 years In conclusion, Mr Totang highlighted that vandalism of fibre cables is a societal problem that affects us all. “As responsible members of our communities, we have a role to play in preventing and addressing vandalism. By raising awareness, engaging with our communities, implementing security measures, and enforcing consequences, we can make a positive impact and help create safer, more vibrant neighbourhoods for everyone.” He urged the public to work together to build a future where vandalism becomes a relic of the past, and let our communities thrive.

Phishing involves deceptive emails or messages attempting to trick employees into revealing sensitive information. Malware, including viruses and spyware, can infect systems through malicious downloads or email attachments.

Ransomware encrypts files, demanding payment for their release. Data breaches occur when unauthorised individuals access confidential information, while insider threats involve employees misusing their access privileges.

Employee Training: Educate employees about phishing awareness and safe online practices to recognise and avoid malicious emails and links.

Secure Passwords: Encourage strong, unique passwords and implement multifactor authentication for added security.

Regular Updates: Ensure all software, including operating systems and antivirus programs, are up-to-date to patch vulnerabilities.

Network Security: Use firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and encryption to protect the office network from unauthorised access.

Backup Systems: Regularly backup essential data and store it securely offline to mitigate the impact of ransomware attacks.

Access Control: Implement the principle of least privilege, limiting employees' access to data and systems to what is necessary for their roles.

Security Policies: Develop and enforce cybersecurity policies outlining acceptable use of company resources, data handling, and reporting procedures for security incidents.

Incident Response Plan: Have a welldefined plan in place to respond promptly and effectively to any security incidents, minimizing potential damage and downtime.
