MANAGEMENT UPDATE

Hello Summer! Let’s wish for rain every night and a green golf course and lawns in the morning! While some of our residents relocate for the summer, there is still a lot happening at our club. Many events are planned over the next few months, including Mother’s Day Brunch, Concert on the Lawn (Jimmy Buffett), and a Casino Bus Trip. Please refer to the attached fliers for details.

WGA events will continue with a Tuesday summer schedule. There will also be a once monthly 9-hole scramble. The MGA will continue with Pro Shop games every Saturday. Both the MGA and the WGA have planned a multi-year schedule to coordinate with other club activities. You will soon be seeing new landscaping to beautify the golf course.

The Fitness Center is undergoing a refresh with new benches, new bag / jacket hooks, and renovated restrooms with new wallpaper. All of the treadmills, bikes and elliptical equipment will be replaced this summer, tentatively scheduled at the end of June.

Summer hours will be adjusted as we move into May. The initial areas are as follows:

·The last official Tiki Bar event will be on Sunday, May 4.

·The Fairway Dining Room will close after dinner on April 30.

The golf course will close from July 24 through June 31 for maintenance.

Please remember the Club dress code. To maintain the standards of Boca Royale, we kindly ask that all members and guests refrain from wearing t-shirts, tank tops, or swimwear in the clubhouse. Men are also asked to remove hats while indoors.

The Pineapple Press will soon have a new look. It will be published in a flip book format with print copies available at the Front Desk of the clubhouse. Summer publications will include a June/July issue and an August/September issue before we resume monthly issues in October.

TENNIS UPDATE FROM THE PRO

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUALITY OF A TENNIS CHAMPION?

“I would have to say DESIRE, staying in there and winning matches when you are not playing that well.” John McEnroe.

The annual club championships at the beginning of April were a great hit with the members. Here is a picture of the event.

As the weather starts heating up, our clinic, drill and lesson schedule will continue. Make sure to text Agnieszka to sign up if you would like to join. 941-993-4266.

Congratulations to our local high school teams (Lemon Bay and Venice). Both the girls’ and boys’ team won their district tennis titles.

PLAY IT FORWARD CHARITY EVENT - APRIL 5TH

Boca Cares "Play It Forward" was a Huge Success .... Thank you to all who participated (see below). The weatherman cooperated, the play was great, but there's nothing better than being with such good friends, while helping others in need. Collectively Pickleball players raised almost $4,000, which goes directly into the Boca Cares Benevolent Fund.

Low Impact Pickleball

As some of your already know, I’ve been talking up the New Concept of Low Impact Pickleball for the last month, or so.

It all started in February during a phone conversation with a great friend of mine who lives in Tucson, Arizona. During our conversation, Tim asked how my Pickleball Play was coming along and I told him that I was pulling away from Pickleball due to my fear of falling and getting hurt. I mentioned that Life was Good again after loosing my Merry 3 years ago and now having Cindy in it. The greatest fear wasn’t just taking a tumble and breaking something but falling, hitting my head on the court and not knowing who I was anymore. This is when Tim told me about a new version of Pickleball that his group developed, because Tim and his fellow players also shared the same concerns. In fact, Tim mentioned that if it wasn’t for their new style of play he wouldn’t be able to play golf 3 days a week…… it keeps him limbered up.

So, here’s what they came up with and how “Low Impact Pickleball” works.

Rules:

No running backwards. (and of course that’s everyone’s number one rule)

No Lob Shots. (this is where most folks get injured)

No Overhead Smash Shots into your opponent.

And No Bragging.

Should you hit a Lob Shot or an Overhead Smash Shot that hits someone, It’s just a Do-Over. I ran this by Dave Thieme and he said that “this is not a bad idea, not a bad idea at all. Tell me more.” I also mentioned this to David Gillhouse and he felt the same way. We were encouraged to run this by the PAG Board for their impression, which of course ….we did. We also said that we would only play Low Impact Pickleball on the Open Courts #1 - 4 and not on the Competitive Courts #5 – 8. In addition, we requested to play at the same times of the morning, so we could maintain the wonderful personal relationship that we had developed over the last number of years. The PAG gave us the Thumbs up. In fact Peggy said that this would be very helpful for any player that may be coming back from an injury, to play at a less impactful level too.

So, there you have it. A New level of play that some of us are enjoying. I’ve found out that when picking up my paddle from the rotation rack I simple ask if we could play Low Impact, and it’s always well accepted. Should the other players not wish to play this way…I can always put my paddle back in the rack for the next game. Although this hasn’t happened yet, and we certainly understand that it can.

Thanks for allowing some of us “More Seasoned Players” to still hang in there.

Warmest Regards,

EXERCISE AND FOOD: A BALANCING ACT

For those of you who exercise regularly, knowing what and when to eat can be rather tricky. Do you eat before your workout? What should you eat post-workout? If I'm trying to lose weight, I shouldn't eat much at all, right? These are just some of the many questions you may have.

Here is a general eating schedule to follow for MOST of you. If you have special needs (diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.), talk to your doctor first. I am not a registered dietician nor do I construct specific meal plans, but I can assist you with some general guidelines to help you get the most out of your workouts.

A balanced workout and eating schedule involves pre-workout fueling, during workout hydration and post-workout recovery. Ideally, eat a meal within 2 hours of your workout. For those who exercise early in the morning, a light snack like yogurt or a banana will suffice. During your workout, stay hydrated with water. FYI, Gatorade and other electrolyte drinks are designed for longer duration workouts lasting longer than 90 minutes. Post-workout, aim to consume a healthy meal within 30-60 minutes to replenish energy and repair muscle tissue. Starving yourself by not eating after your workout is not healthy. Your body requires fuel after a workout. A balance of carbs and protein is best, such as a protein smoothie or chicken and rice.

Please know that food is fuel and what we consume will create an equal output. Eat junk and you'll feel like garbage. Eat healthy and your exercise plan will reflect that.

If you have any questions, reach out to me, John Richardson, at JRichardson2167@gmail.com or (941)896-2211. Oh, and don't forget to bring your water!
