Editor's Note: A “slow boat” journey

Globally, this year has seen prodigious enthusiasm from boating communities and an onslaught of innovative ideas, particularly in revolutionising how we power our boats. The international leisure boating sector is promoting and progressing sustainability, connectivity, diversity, design and innovation. The International Boatbuilders Exhibition and Conference (IBEX), North America’s largest trade event for marine industry professionals in October this year, announced that “pavilions and trade routes will be focused on innovation, sustainability, and international companies”. Similarly, the organisers of METSTRADE, the world’s largest trade exhibition of marine equipment, materials and systems to be held in Amsterdam in November, “will firmly demonstrate how the environmental challenge has shifted from debating what is needed to executing change today”. With these key words and phrases highlighted within the international boat manufacturing sectors, we can expect cleaner and greener changes in our boating experiences, without compromising on power and efficiency.

There is a consistently growing number of recreational boaters in Australia, as our population grows. One in 10 Australians have boat licences, and one in five Queenslanders are licensed, as reported by Marine Safety Queensland (MSQ). The Brisbane maritime region’s boaters cover 64% of the total number of licence holders in Queensland, including on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Not included in this figure are those who use boats that do not require licences to drive. According to MSQ’s Kel Dillon, “This indicates the enthusiasm that Queenslanders hold for our coastline, our inland waterways, and fishing.” Thus, the interest in boating cannot be overstated, together with the drive for innovation towards more environmentally sound boating experiences.

5 GUARANTEED WAYS TO DESTROY A BOAT BATTERY

1)USE THE WRONG KIND OF BATTERY

The easiest way to quickly kill a marine battery is to use the wrong kind. Marine batteries are manufactured in a variety of types and for different applications, so choosing the right one is vital. Due to their lower cost, the most common type of marine batteries are the flooded lead acid type (e.g. wet cell batteries). There are also gel batteries, Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries and spiral-wound battery derivatives; and lithium-ion marine batteries, although they tend to be more expensive.

Marine batteries are made to meet two applications. Starting batteries, also known as cranking batteries, provide a large jolt of electric current. As the names implies, they are typically used to start a marine engine and are built to recharge quickly.

Deep cycle batteries are designed to provide a current but are intended to operate for longer. They run the various electronic components on a boat and are meant to recharge more slowly. ‘Pure’ deep cycle batteries aren’t designed to be fully discharged. Instead, they have an ideal operating range (typically around 60 per cent) and shouldn’t be discharged below this level.

Dual-purpose batteries are also very common. Sometimes referred to as just marine batteries, they provide a balance between starting and deep cycle use.

A cranking battery repeatedly used for deep cycling can degrade in a matter of weeks, and vice versa, so choose the right one.

2)OVERCHARGE AND UNDERCHARGE

Batteries need to be properly maintained in order to last. Essential to marine battery maintenance is proper charging so always use a charger that meets the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Regularly undercharging a battery erodes its performance and reduces its life due to a phenomenon called sulfation. This occurs when lead sulfate crystals form on the negative plates, impeding performance and reducing the battery’s ability to charge. Eventually this can render it unusable.

Excessive or incorrect overcharging can be equally damaging, particularly with AGM and gel batteries. Doing so can ‘cook’ a battery so it is essential to follow the manufacturer’s charging recommendations.

Thankfully, many readily available tools and accessories are available to keep your batteries in running order. For example, charging and maintaining a battery over long idle periods (during winter or lock-downs) using a multistage charger will prolong its life.

3)DON’T MAINTAIN YOUR BATTERY

Marine battery maintenance means more than regular charging. Neglecting other forms of maintenance can also lead to deterioration.

Water loss, due to evaporation from heat and other chemical reactions, is common in wet cell batteries. It can rapidly shorten a wet cell battery’s life if left unchecked, so ensure the water level remains topped up (but not to overflowing). Only use

distilled water, as impurities in tap water will accumulate inside the battery. Note that deep cycle batteries tend to lose water faster than starters.

External components should also be inspected. Check that the lead posts don’t show signs of coming off (they can be weakened if a terminal was forcefully connected). A gentle dose of grease, lanolin or Vaseline can stave off corrosion on exposed metal terminals. Once a year, clean out the battery box, check for signs of leaks and corrosion, check the vent is clear, and inspect the tie-downs.

The battery box (especially on smaller boats) should be located where it won’t be adversely affected by wave pounding and engine vibrations. It should also be situated in a location where it won’t get flooded by seawater. Wet cell batteries should also be situated in a location with adequate ventilation.

5)BUY

THE CHEAPEST POSSIBLE MARINE BATTERY

As with so many things in life, you get what you pay for with boat batteries. As mentioned, marine batteries need to fulfil several functions so the temptation may be to buy an automotive battery. While not contrary to any regulations, using a battery that is less likely to resist vibrations or which can’t handle steep discharge cycles puts you at risk.

Purchasing a second-hand battery is generally inadvisable. You don’t know its history and it’s probably not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

What is it with flathead? They have this tendency to capture anglers' imaginations right around Australia, they’ll drain your bank account and leave you in your tackle box sorting throughout the hundreds of lures you’ve purchased just to find that right one that the fish is wanting to eat just for that day. Well, recently we decided to do a shoot on targeting and catching big lizards for our show Step Outside with Paul Burt which airs on 7Mate every weekend to help anglers successfully target these silent carnivores on shallow water flats. That’s right. shallow water flats, so shallow that when the fish decides to eat your lure, it leaves a hole in the water the size of a washing machine. Surface strikes are not something many flathead fishermen come across but the technique of Soft Gliding certainly brings out the animal in this fish.

Johnny Costello from My Lure Box invents his own lures. He sees what the fish are eating and basically goes and makes something that looks very similar even if the lure is 8 to 10 inches long. His Soft Glides are meant to look like something between a mullet, pike, whiting, and even a flathead, and man do these things work. Rigged to look like a punk rocker with hooks coming out of every orifice, there’s no way the fish would strike and not get hooked up. (No disrespect to punk rockers out there by the way.)

I was introduced to John a few years ago and have watched closely on how his works of art have manifested into an Aussie icon and sit high within the billion-dollar lure industry. The technique when using one of his Soft Glides is nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, it’s even less than that. No twitching, no hop, skip and a flick, no lifting of the rod and definitely no deep-water channel jigging or bobbing. It’s as easy as a single rotation of the handle and then let the lure sink back down to deck before repeating with another single rotation of the handle. Remember, you’re only fishing in 2 to 3 feet of water. In this depth, the big flatties lie and wait to ambush other marine life being pushed out by the current or other marine life just foraging around for food.

Longer casts is a key to catching big fish too. Basically, you can cast a country mile with a lure that is seriously so big yet super slow on the sink that it allows you to simply lob the lure with a mighty flick and you’ve easily obtained a 60-metre cast. That’s 60 metres of ground you’re covering on the retrieve. The gear set up is also quite unique. A good mate of mine, Greg Reid from Pro Lure, is based south of Sydney around Georges Basin and he showed me recently his outfit when targeting big flatties on large glides down there and it’s very similar to John's.

A 10-foot rod matched with a 2500 reel, in this case the new Shimano Sedona, spooled with 10-pound braided line and a 12-pound fluorocarbon leader. For me, when I target flatties I’ve always used a Shimano 702 two-piece spin stick matched with a 2500 sized reel and similar weighted braid. Apparently, it’s all in the rod when it comes to casting such a great distance and this is mainly due to the lure being so big and weighty that the rod can handle it and basically a small whippier rod wouldn’t cut it.

Places to fish are basically anywhere. There’s a large sand bank running adjacent to a channel, a yabbie flat or even a shallow channel at high tide. You see, these big flatties don’t mind what time of the day it is as it’s all tide dependent. It could be middle of the day, sun’s up high, hundreds of boats whizzing by yet still they’ll make their way up onto the shallows, sink into the sand and wait patiently, and silently for that one moment a small fish or crustacean passes by, or in this case your 8 to 10 inch Soft Glide. Remember the retrieve is simple. The lure will pull through the water 4 feet at a time before sinking back down as you stop winding momentarily then as you start the retrieve again the lure rises off the bottom and moves forward another 4 feet. It’s then when the fatties will strike and quite often so abruptly and with ferocity that they break the surface of the water leaving the angler breathless in awe.

As the tide flows out the fish start to move again, most of the time staying in that 2 to 3 feet of water. They will get in shallower for sure but this depth is always a good start on where they’ll be feeding. With low tide about to take place and the current slowing right down, the fish will generally spread out around the neck of where a channel flowed out to while the water was running - even the shallow entrance to small drains and or creeks. Here, a

shotgun cast works a treat. Basically start working the angle of the bank and feather your cast to the left or right of the cast beforehand. That way you’re covering every inch of flat and a certainty of a hook up would be imminent.

Key pieces of equipment definitely include polarised sunglasses (I use Tonic and find them super comfortable. The glass lenses cut directly through the glare on the water's surface and they have some weight to them, meaning they sit better on your face), and a glove to handle a big flattie that has just eaten your lure. If you want to pick it up to de-hook it, then gloves are a necessity, especially when the fish you’ve just caught measures over 90 centimetres in length and weighs over 7 kilograms.

Stealth is key. Never walk through virgin water unless you’ve already peppered it with casts because quite often you’ll see that monster flathead take off after being spooked from you walking through.

that time, and Jim was content with basic gear and simple fishing activities. Things changed when they moved to Brisbane in 2015. “I was watching people on jetties. I saw them using lures, so I learned by copying them,” he shares. “I really became interested in lure fishing and using jig heads, so I started watching videos on Youtube and social media to learn more. That’s when I started lure fishing.”

In 2018, he joined local fishing groups, and followed accounts on social media. He was really keen to learn more about fishing, and taught himself for the most part. He also created his own Youtube channel and Facebook page, OzPinoy Fishing Adventures.

Through his Youtube channel, other Filipino fishers have been inviting him to go on the boats with them. He has recently been involved in fishing for sport. He has joined the 2023 King of the Pin competition, and has gone fishing several times offshore from Surfers Paradise and on the Broadwater.

Jim has also reached many other followers, not only Filipinos. He appreciates other people’s suggestions and advice. “Sometimes, I post questions, and people share their answers. This is how I learn about things I do not know about,” he says. “But I also get criticized by some people online. Many of those who post negative comments are just being cynical or offensive even if I have not done anything wrong. Some are even racial slurs against Asians. I just brush them off as I know I have not done anything illegal.”

Some people vlog for legacy – capturing moments on video to show future grandchildren the life they have lived. One such person is Jim Agbisit who produces OzPinoy Fishing Adventures on Youtube, and owns the Facebook page of the same title. (OzPinoy is a contraction for the term Australian-Filipino, with Pinoy being an informal self-reference term used by Filipinos for citizens of the Philippines and their culture, as well as for overseas Filipinos in diaspora.)

When Jim arrived in Australia in 2013 to live in Rockhampton, he had to leave his family behind in the Philippines. To keep his mind off his homesickness and missing his family, he joined a group of Filipinos who encouraged him to try out fishing. “Basic fishing lang para maaliw [I only did basic fishing just to keep myself entertained],” he reminisces. At this time, he only used the “bait-and-wait” technique.

When Jim’s family joined him the year after, they all became involved in fishing, and it became their regular family picnic adventure. They would have their fishing gear but were not really targeting specific fish, as they were just happy doing things together at

The idea came to him as he wanted to record himself (and sometimes his family) as he went about his fishing adventures. At that time, he really just wanted a platform to document his activities. However, things changed again, when the COVID lockdown started.

“During the pandemic, work time was cut down,” he says. “I had more time for fishing, and also increased my posts on Youtube and Facebook. That’s when my channel picked up with followers too. Because of social distancing rules, I would fish mostly by myself along the North Pine River. I was using bait-and-wait, as well as lure casting at the same time. I would catch bream and flathead, and sometimes even trevally.”

So in 2020, his Youtube channel became really active. Many fellow Filipinos started to follow him and reach out to him. It is through his channel and social media platform that he met other Filipinos from the Gold Coast through the Sunshine Coast who are also avid fishers. “As a Filipino, I believe in the kababayan [fellow countryman] spirit. I share my knowledge in the videos I post. I also share the places where I go – no secrets,” he states.

“Some people think that all Asians just catch whatever fish, regardless of size and kind, to eat. What they don’t acknowledge is that we respect and follow the rules. So it is unfair for people to judge us just because of how we look.”

Growing up in a nation of islands, Jim knew fishing mainly as a means of livelihood. “Recreational fishing is not a popular activity in the Philippines. Fishing is a means of livelihood for many coastal dwellers there,” he shares. When he became involved in recreational fishing in Australia, he discovered a new aspect of fishing, and he knew he had to follow the rules. “Of course, some of

the rules are interesting and I don’t understand the reason for them. For example, it is illegal to take tilapia here, but in the Philippines, tilapia is a common fish in our cuisine, like in other Asian countries. However, I know to follow the rules here, and I kill and dispose of them as required.” Jim has also witnessed some fishers catching undersized fish while out on the boat. He would tell them off, and convince them not to conduct illegal fishing. He would warn them of the hefty fines too and remind them of the rules, when called for. “The Filipino mindset of ‘pwede na yan’ [you can get away with it] cannot work,” he often reminds others.

Jim usually catches fish to consume, such as tailor, mackerel, bream, trevally, cod and whiting. He does not usually engage in catchand-release, unless it is a fish he is not familiar with. As a Filipino family, fish is part of their staple diet. He shares how he likes the fish served – mostly cooked the Filipino way. “We like making tempura with whiting. Then with bream, we usually fry it or make sarciadong isda [a Filipino dish of fish simmered in tomatoes and onions]. For trevally and cod, we make sinigang, Filipino sour soup.”

Jim fishes every weekend with friends and family, or sometimes by himself as a way to relieve stress. His family is very supportive and encourage him to keep fishing and to continue his vlog on Youtube. Jim is very particular about teaching his young son the value of an activity like fishing. He believes that it introduces kids to n ature and the outdoors. “It teaches them motor skills. And they will also learn to decide when to cast, when to let go, when to reel in. It helps increase their confidence, and make them more independent.” He also says that through his boating and fishin g adventures, he is able to explore and discover the wonderful waterways of Southeast Queensland from the Broadwater to Moreton Bay, and offshore.

Buying or selling a vessel is usually an exciting event. From catamarans to superyachts, new builds to second-hand vessels, it is one of those quintessential moments we live for as maritime enthusiasts. Many a day will be spent cruising Australian waterways with family and friends.

However, among all the excitement, it is important to remember that the contract for your vessel purchase is exactly that, a contract! It needs to be tailored to the circumstances of the vessel and the parties to the sale.

Unfortunately, as maritime lawyers we see a fair share of third-party vessel contracts that don’t cut the mustard. Particularly with new vessels being built overseas and imported to Australia, sellers may use simple domestic boat sale contracts which simply aren’t fit for purpose. Further, sellers may use a different contract from a previous sale which includes irrelevant terms, opening the buyer up to liability. Such inadequate contracts provide little protection when things go south.

As a buyer, if you are presented with a purchase contract from a seller, it’s important to receive advice from a legal professional. Prevention is always better than the cure, and having a legal professional ensure a contract is ‘watertight’ can help prevent future headaches down the road (or provide a clear path to remedy them if they do arise).

People will often go to great lengths to dot the i’s and cross the t’s when purchasing real property, like a house, but won’t do the same for a vessel purchase of equivalent value, or more! AQUILA 42 THE ALL-ROUNDER

The standard layout, which differs from the Aquila 44, comprises a main deck utility cabin forward with single bed, storage, refrigeration and washer/ dryer. While below decks, there’s an owner’s cabin and ensuite in the portside hull, plus double cabin with ensuite to starboard.

Getting Navigation Straight

Nyou do! To ensure that boat owners and handlers are better educated prior to taking their larger vessels offshore and on extended journeys, insurance companies are doing their due diligence by requesting educational evidence of their boat handling and navigation skills from potential clients.

Karla Herbert-Evans from Nautical Training and Marine Services conducts courses, which satisfy the needs of both the insurance companies and the boat operators and owners, and students receive a Certificate of Completion which details all activities successfully completed.

Prospective boat owners, Paul Platt and Nick Evans, are two such successful students.

As business partners, Paul and Nick were looking to purchase a boat to enjoy during their semi-retirement from the workforce. Being organised and responsible, the two men decided to make the effort to learn all they could to keep themselves safe on the water. Having already attained their recreational boat licence and marine radio licence, it seemed that the natural progression was to undertake a course of study in navigation. Nick, having extensive aviation piloting experience already, was keen to learn more detailed differences between aviation navigation and marine navigation, predominantly tidal influence.

Seeing that Karla offered such a course Navigation Courses 1 & 2 Chart Plotting and Positioning, they decided to engage her services.

Karla conducted the class at the Australian Volunteer Coastguard facility in Marine Parade, Southport Qld. Paul said that the classroom was well laid out, and that Karla supplied all the tools needed to complete the course exercises. Additionally, she provided numerous helpful resources that class members were encouraged to take home and keep. She also gave recommendations for software that have proved very helpful. “The course content was well planned out,” said Paul. “Karla brought her many years of boating and navigation experience to the classroom and introduced the class to the basics of marine navigation, using a variety of learning styles, in a fashion that was both informative and practical.”

Paul was initially challenged with the problem of ‘getting his head around’ converting compass bearings to true bearings, and vice versa, on the navigational charts. With support and advice from Karla, Paul was able to overcome the troublesome conversions.

Paul believes that, for Nick and him, the highlight of the course was the successful manual plotting of a course around the Whitsunday Islands, then checking their bearings and measurements for time, distance, and fuel against the Navionics software calculations – and finding a very close match.

Paul and Nick believe that they achieved their learning objectives – and have a certificate to prove it! They are now confident that they can plan a boating trip by reading marine charts and traditional methods of plotting a course, using compass and true bearings, and accounting for hazards, tides, currents, fuel and distance, estimating time on water and basic weather forecasting.

MORETON BAY MARINE PARK FISHING ZONES

If you are boating or fishing in the Gold Coast and Brisbane areas, you need to be aware of the size and possession limits of your catch, and the boating rules and regulations. However, you also need to know if you are inside the boundary of the Moreton Bay Marine Park (better to presume that you are!), as this area has its own special rules and regulations that must also be followed.

The Moreton Bay Marine Park encompasses Moreton Bay, Jumpinpin, the Southport Broadwater, some rivers and tributaries, and several nautical miles offshore from Moreton Island, Bribie Island, and North and South Stradbroke Islands.

MARINE PARK ZONES

The Moreton Bay Marine Park has four zone types:

The yellow conservation park zone rules specify that only a maximum of four crab pots per person is permitted.

DARK BLUE ZONE – Habitat Protection. The dark blue habitat protection zones protect sensitive habitats by keeping them generally free from potentially damaging activities. No trawling is allowed in these zones.

LIGHT BLUE ZONE – General Use. The light blue general use zones provide for conservation while allowing a wide range of activities to occur including trawling (with an appropriate commercial fishing permit).

1. General use zone (light blue);

3. Conservation park zone (yellow);

2. Habitat protection zone (dark blue);

4. Marine national park zone (green). Each zone has its own rules with regard to fishing and boating activities.

GREEN ZONE – Marine National Park. While anyone can enter and undertake activities such as boating, snorkelling and sailing, no fishing, crabbing, or bait gathering is permitted in the green marine national park zones. Like a national park in the water, these areas are ‘NO-TAKE areas’ of high conservation value. Green zones provide the greatest level of protection in the marine park. All forms of take (fishing, collecting or extracting) are prohibited.

All fishing equipment including rods, crab pots, cast nets, and yabby pumps must be stowed or secured;

otherwise you will be fined. “Stowed” means being not readily useable for fishing. For example, bait must be removed from hooks, fishing lures must be removed from lines, bait must be removed from crab pots, and you cannot have a cast net tied around your wrist.

YELLOW ZONE – Conservation Park. These zones are areas of high conservation value for habitat and wildlife that also allow for limited recreational and commercial uses such as fishing and crabbing. A maximum of two lines and a total of two hooks per angler is permitted. A fishing lure with up to 3 trebles is considered to be a single hook, as are squid jigs, bait jigs (with up to 6 hooks of size 1-12), and gangs with up to 6 adjoined hooks (as long as the shank passes through the eye; hooks joined by swivels are considered individual hooks).

The Queensland recreational fishing rules and regulations on crab pots, specifying that no more than four crab pots per person may be used, and that there must not be more than four pots on a boat per person when on the water, also apply in both dark blue and light blue zones.

Please be aware that it is quite impractical and financially unviable to sign every part of every zone within the marine park. It is, therefore, the skipper’s responsibility to be aware of the vessel’s current location and to be able to determine if the vessel is inside a particular zone boundary. Ignorance of the rules, or being unaware of your current location, is not a valid excuse to save yourself from being fined by Moreton Bay Marine Parks, the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol, or the Queensland Water Police.

CELEBRATES OUR MARITIME HISTORY

In June, under clear skies and gentle winds, the Moreton Bay Classic took place off Manly, leaving organisers delighted by its success and visual splendour. Classic timber cruiser owners from near and far eagerly participated, resulting in a fleet of 80 classic cruisers, joined by other support and spectator boats. This year’s event success was credited to many volunteers and local organisers Tony Dummer, David Bryant and Paul Crowther. Paul captains his own classic cruiser, Mohokoi, that participated in the event. Many boats hailed from the Moreton Bay area and featured native timber, adding a local touch that thrilled enthusiasts. Each year, the event breathes life into the bay, evoking scenes from a bygone era with its classic timber vessels.

Taking advantage of the beautiful winter conditions on Moreton Bay, the event was strategically scheduled on the first Saturday of the school holidays. The fleet followed a course around Green Island and then around the eastern end of Peel Island, eventually anchoring in Horseshoe Bay.

Around 300 people gathered on the beach for a delightful BBQ and live entertainment, with Nik Philips providing the musical backdrop for the festivities. Line honours were bestowed upon Dolphin 2, and they were presented with the esteemed Bill Wright Trophy. St Brendan claimed the Ron Jenyns Trophy for the handicap winner, although the organisers made a spontaneous decision to award this trophy to the crew that best captured the spirit of the event.

The organisers emphasised that the focus of the Moreton Bay Classic was not solely on the winners but on encouraging everyone to get out on the water and enjoy boating. They also expressed a desire to foster a love for timber boats among the younger generation, as many of these beautiful vessels are currently owned by older enthusiasts.

With the tremendous success and enthusiasm generated by this year's event, the Moreton Bay Classic has firmly established itself as a cherished annual celebration of maritime heritage and boating camaraderie. Stejcraft boats are now built entirely out of composite materials, eliminating the use of wood. EMMA UPSKILLS FOR SUPERYACHTING

Being a crew of a super yacht is a very demanding job, entailing quick-thinking and good situational awareness. While tasks may vary, it is important for crew members to keep refreshing their knowledge and skills, and to work on also improving and updating them. This is what Emma Weale has done.

Emma Weale is a well-travelled young person with a love of the sea and extensive experience, having already completed the widely respected Royal Yachting Association Certificate in the UK, and having spent time working on a yacht in France. Subsequently, Emma was elated to land her dream job as a deckhand stewardess on an 80-foot Superyacht in Australia.

Despite her previous yachting experience, Emma felt the need for more hands-on training to increase her vessel handling skills to better manage the superyacht’s outboard motor-powered rigid inflatable tender.

Specifically, Emma wanted to improve her vessel approach and departure skills when rafting the tender to the superyacht in adverse conditions, ensuring the safety of both passengers and crew while embarking and disembarking, anchoring, and mooring.

Emma approached Karla Herbert-Evans of Nautical Training, outlining her previous experience, and discussing her desire to increase her capabilities on the water. Karla was very supportive and encouraged Emma to continue with her maritime endeavours, complimenting Emma’s existing skills and great enthusiasm as being a tremendous boost to her doing well in the superyacht industry.

“My main struggle was with docking. It is one of the major skills required for my job,” said Emma.

Together, they decided that the appropriate courses of study would be “Navigation Courses 1 & 2 Chart Plotting and Positioning” and “Advanced Vessel Handling & Close Quarter Manoeuvring”.

Emma’s next yachting destination was to the Whitsunday Islands and therefore, she was very keen to complete Nautical Training and Marine Services' Whitsundays Navigation course to be best prepared for their pending voyage.

Karla’s training covered the theory and, importantly, the hands-on practice needed to gain the necessary competence. Under Karla’s guidance, Emma completed her trip planning and forecasting, then docking and vessel rafting practice, prior to navigating Nautical Training’s vessel from the Australian Volunteer Coastguard dock in Loder Creek,

Southport Qld to Runaway Bay fuel jetty for some docking practice and bunkering, then on to Wave Break Island for anchoring practice, including sternto-beach anchoring, before returning to the boatramp to cover launch and retrieval to trailer.

As Emma said afterwards, “Initially, I felt some pressure but, once everything was explained in detail, it gradually became easier. I really enjoyed the process so that, of course, is an added bonus!”

Emma believes that a major aspect of the training was the confidence that she felt through being instructed by such a competent, empathetic, and knowledgeable female in a male-dominated industry.

As Emma said of Karla, “She answered all my questions in detail and with passion.”

Karla helped to build Emma’s morale for future challenges and her belief that she would achieve her goals.

As a testament to the success of the training, Emma wrote, “I would highly recommend the training as it was personalised and friendly. I would definitely go back to Karla for more training and would suggest that anyone who is starting out in the super yachting industry do so as well, as it is specifically tailored to each individual’s needs.”

To provide the boating community with their continued support, the squadron is seeking new volunteer recruits looking to donate their time and help the squadron continue to keep our waterways safe. Marine Rescue Jacobs Well operates 24/7, 365 days a year. With three mid-week crews attending each week and four weekend crews attending every fourth weekend, there are options available to those wishing to donate their valuable time.

As we near the end of 2023, for the Volunteer Marine Rescue squadron at Jacobs Well, this year marks a huge milestone for all the VMR crew members who assist and protect the boating community of our waterways.

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS

Celebrating 45 years this year, VMR Jacobs Well has come a long way. From its original beginnings after the 1974 floods, it was an organisation born out of necessity. Beenleigh Air Sea Rescue as it was originally known started off with two volunteers and their own boats. They would launch their boats into the water from behind the old Beenleigh Rum Distillery and proceed to the Broadwater area when assistance was required. After a few years and with the help of sponsors and donations, the Beenleigh Air Sea Rescue base was built at Jacobs Well as a permanent base of operations for the area.

Today, that same base, Volunteer Marine Rescue Jacobs Well is a crucial part of the boating community in the area.

This year, the squadron also welcomed their latest vessel to the fleet, Jacobs Well Rescue 1. This new vessel will replace the old Jacobs Well 1 which has served the Jacobs Well squadron for over 15 years. Alongside Jacobs Well Rescue 2, Rotary Rescue II and Jacobs Well Rescue 4, the new boat was officially launched in September and after an extensive three-month crew training program and shakedown, will take pride of place as the new flagship for the squadron.

VMR Jacobs Well offers Associate Members marine assistance coverage for all areas south of the northern tip (Potts Point) of Macleay Island to the North Arm of the Coomera River, including the Logan, Albert, Pimpama Rivers and Jumpinpin Bar.

Building a classic!

This boat is an Albury Brothers Runabout constructed from plans purchased from D.N Hylan & Assoc Boatbuilders in Brooklyn, Maine - a 19'7" Vee bottom Boat. The Albury name is renowned in boatbuilding, originating from the northern Bahamas. For nearly 40 years, Willard and Benny Albury have crafted outstanding outboard runabouts, recognised for their smooth rides, seaworthiness, sturdiness, and impressive speed with modest horsepower. At the time, these plans represented what Willard Albury considers to be his optimal boat, the best of over 250 individual boats.

Sfrom Brisbane, epitomise the boating lifestyle in South East Queensland. Their lifelong journey with boats began during their childhood, starting with small sailing dinghies and encompassing activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing - anything related to boating that brings joy. Their late father, Tom Wright, played a pivotal role in fostering this passion during their youth in Mackay and later years on the Tinaroo Dam in the Atherton Tablelands. Tom, who resided in Cairns, sadly passed away in February 2022, leaving behind an impressive collection of wooden boats, including canoes, small rowing boats, sailing boats, and a timber runabout.

After their father's passing and while finalising his estate, they stumbled upon a completed hull in a storage shed on the Atherton Tablelands. It was a pristine hull lacking electrics, power, or finishing touches, sitting on a trailer seemingly untouched. They transported the hull to Brisbane and embarked on the journey of making it seaworthy. They christened the boat 'Blue Water Drive,' named after a street their father frequented when accessing Lake Tinaroo.

The late Mark Boutle from Innisfail in North Queensland was the builder of the hull, commissioned by Tom Wright in 2012. Mark initially pursued furniture-making as a hobby, later receiving training from local boat builders in Innisfail before venturing into crafting timber boats independently. He built five boats of various sizes and styles for Tom, with 'Blue Water Drive' being his final creation before his passing.

'Blue Water Drive' is surveyed for up to seven adults and boasts a 140hp Suzuki outboard, ensuring effortless planing. Its epoxy-coated hull is suitable for calm or semi-sheltered waters. The bimini was meticulously designed for comfortable standing height for most adults during all-day family outings. It can also be separated into two pieces for flexibility and is entirely removable, allowing the boat to transform into a classic cruiser. The tan and cream upholstery complement the timber aesthetics for a timeless appearance.

While adapting to owning a classic boat has presented some challenges, the brothers are now prepared to turn heads wherever they go. They receive compliments on the boat's beauty every time they take it out. The standout features of 'Blue Water Drive' include its exquisite timber craftsmanship, ample space for two families, and an open plan, comfortable layout perfect for days on the water. Its classic lines and straightforward design make it an ideal, user-friendly boat.

Before commencing the project, the brothers sought advice from Russell at Marine Matters and obtained a comprehensive survey from Nick at KPS Marine. They entrusted Rowlands Boat Trimmers with the upholstery, bimini, and cover, while the outboard and steering were expertly installed by Australian Marine Centre. The finishing touch, the windscreen, was provided by Blue Water Windscreens.

Andrew and Simon painstakingly sorted through their father's extensive boat collection, with the support of the local Cairns Wooden Boat Association, where Tom played a significant role. Many boats were either sold or gifted to local boating enthusiasts, while some found new homes in larger southern cities. Andrew and Simon chose to retain some canoes (captured in photos with Tom) and two small power boats, one of which is 'Blue

The boat has been put to versatile use, from towing kids and adults behind it, to leisurely cruises up the Brisbane River for picnics and docking at waterside cafés. It has also facilitated explorations of the bay, including trips to Peel Island and Moreton Island.

Simon emphasises that, like any timber boat, regular washing and cleaning are imperative for its longevity. Dry storage is essential, as wood requires special care and attention to withstand the environmental elements. While these boats are undeniably beautiful, they demand dedicated maintenance to preserve their splendor.

The Bribie Island Classic Boat Regatta was a truly spectacular event, bringing together 91 beautiful classic boats from near and far. Set against the backdrop of postcard-perfect weather in S.E. Queensland, with brilliant blue skies, glistening water, and a colorful array of small boats, big boats, and wooden cruisers, the regatta was a sight to behold. The atmosphere was filled with joy, laughter, and animated discussions as boat enthusiasts gathered to celebrate their shared passion.

Cruising along the picturesque Pumicestone Passage to Toorbul and Donnybrook, the event evoked nostalgic memories of a rich maritime recreational past. Bribie Island and the Pumicestone Passage were showcased like never before, making it a standout event in Moreton Bay's calendar. The warm welcome from the Toorbul and Donnybrook Community Association, along with a sponsored lunch by local Councillor Brooke Savige and the Moreton Bay Regional Council, added a sense of camaraderie and community spirit.

As the colorful boats graced the Pumicestone Passage again, this time at Pacific Harbour Marina, the crowds swelled with excitement. Enthusiastic boat owners proudly shared tales of their beautiful vessels with visitors, while the melodious saxophone tunes of local legend Leigh Thirlwell, accompanied by his talented nine-year-old grand-daughter, Lotus, filled the air, creating an enchanting ambiance.

The highlight of the regatta, the Grand Parade on Sunday morning, drew vast crowds lining the foreshores. The boats, heading to the Sylvan Beach esplanade, became a magnificent spectacle amid classic cars, model boat displays, pop-up stalls, and live entertainment, creating an immersive experience for all attendees.

The moment of anticipation arrived when the three independent judges revealed the winners of the coveted hand-crafted perpetual trophies. The prestigious 'Pride of Fleet' trophy was awarded to Iona, a boat from Cairns, owned by Tom Sparks and Rodger Fryer. This Navigator design, a centre-board yawl day cruiser, exuded timeless beauty and craftsmanship,

built with love by members of the Wooden Boat Association of Cairns.

The title of Best Classic Sail Boat 2023 went to Mary Rose, a Clem Masters design built in 1966 by Brisbane boat builder Simon Paroz, showcasing the elegance of a timber planked Carvel Sailing Sloop. Coincidentally, the Best Classic Motor Boat, named Moreton Maid, was also a Clem Masters design, a Masters 31-footer built in 1964.

In a delightful addition to the awards, this year marked the inauguration of the 'People's Choice Award,' generously sponsored by Ms Ali King, the Member for Pumicestone. The boat that claimed this honor was the Baby Dolphin, lovingly built by owner Geoff Tyler from Wynnum, modeled after a 1928 American Hacker Craft. Crafted from exquisite Brazilian mahogany in 2013, this 22-foot beauty won the hearts of the public.

Other notable participants included Three Swans, a Green Island 15 design by Mike Robers and owned by Sandy Pegg, securing the second-place position. Its Gunter-rigged feature allowed easy trailering, making it a cherished asset for beach camping opportunities on Bribie.

A classic boat with exquisite lines, aptly named A Classic, designed and owned by Alan Graham from Toorbul, took the third spot, a testament to the timeless allure of craftsmanship.

The regatta extended its community engagement with a fundraising raffle for a new Joey Sailing dinghy, made possible by the Wooden Boat Association of Queensland. The lucky local winner from Bribie was elated, expressing excitement about creating cherished memories with their grandkids.

With a record-breaking attendance of over 3000 people, the Bribie Island Classic Boat Regatta has firmly established itself as a signature event for Bribie Island and Moreton Bay. UNDERSTANDING SONAR

1 Depth Sounders or Echo Sounders: These instruments display the vertical distance between the boat and the seabed as a numeric value. They provide essential depth data for navigation and can be used to set alarms for shallow water conditions.

Sonar, which stands for "SOund NAvigation and Ranging," is a technology used to detect targets underwater. It is similar to radar, but instead of detecting targets in the air, sonar detects them in the water. Sonar can be categorized into two types: passive and active.

Passive sonar involves listening for sounds transmitted by the target itself. In submarine films, you may have seen operators wearing headphones and listening for sounds of approaching vessels. This is an example of passive sonar. It relies on the target generating sound for detection.

Active sonar, on the other hand, uses transmitted sound signals to detect objects and underwater terrain. It measures the time it takes for the echoes to reflect back from the target to determine the distance. The sound signals are sent out from the sonar system and the echoes are received and analyzed. The time it takes for the echoes to return provides data on the distance to the target. Advanced sonar systems can also provide additional details such as the hardness of underwater terrain and the size and number of fish.

In modern leisure boats, active sonar technology is commonly used. The sound waves emitted by the sonar system occur thousands of times per second and are usually in the ultrasonic range, which is not detectable by the human ear or fish. Sonar can be utilized on boats for various purposes. The following are some marine electronics that incorporate sonar technology:

2 Fishfinders: Fishfinders combine depth sounder functionality with detailed imaging of underwater terrain and fish. They provide a color-coded picture of what is underneath and to the sides of the boat, including suspended objects, swimming fish, and temperature gradients in the water. Fishfinders are useful for anglers and anyone interested in exploring and understanding underwater environments.

3 ForwardScan or Forward-Looking Sonar: This specialised type of sonar sends sound signals ahead of the boat to provide a detailed picture of the underwater terrain that the boat is approaching. It offers safety benefits, especially when navigating in uncharted or poorly surveyed areas.

To utilise sonar on your boat, you will need a transducer. The transducer is a crucial component that acts as a powerful loudspeaker and microphone underwater. It emits sonar signals and listens for the echoes that bounce back from the seabed and other targets.

The choice of transducer depends on your specific requirements and the depth instrument, fishfinder, or multifunction display (MFD) you intend to use. Transducers need to be installed correctly, ensuring direct water contact or acoustic connection to the water, proper alignment, and a clean surface free from coatings or fouling. There are different transducer types available, including transommounted transducers and those requiring dedicated holes in the boat.

In addition to the transducer, you will need a compatible display or system to connect and view the sonar data. Integrated systems can share depth data across a network, allowing you to view the information on multiple displays. Planning your sonar system based on the level of detail and performance you desire is important.

It's recommended to consult with experts or professionals who can provide guidance on the best sonar options for your specific boat size, type, and purpose. They can assist with choosing the appropriate equipment and ensuring proper installation for optimal performance.

SYC Sail Past

& BLESSING OF THE FLEET

Th e 77th Sail Past and Blessing of the Fleet on September 9, 2023, witnessed a splendid display of maritime tradition and camaraderie as member boats eagerly registered their participation in this year's event. This annual spectacle, known as the SYC Sail Past, serves as the official opening of the SYC boating season and stands as a cherished tradition within our community. The Sail Past and Blessing of the Fleet unfolded gracefully in the presence of the SYC Board, fellow SYC members, distinguished guests, and a receptive audience.

The day's proceedings commenced with vessels gathering at the end of D arm at 13:30, setting the stage for the Sail Past that commenced promptly at 14:10. Each boat's captain and crew meticulously adorned their vessels, vying for the coveted "Best Dressed" accolade. Judges evaluated entries based on a set of criteria that included boat themes, crew outfits, the display of signal flags, burgees, bunting, and the proper handling of the ensign, including the dignified dipping salute as they passed by. In a show of respect, each crew also delivered a salute to the Flag Officers positioned on the pontoon.

The origin of this grand tradition can be traced back to the very first Yacht Club formed in Cowes, England, more than two centuries ago. Founded primarily by members of the aristocracy, many of whom were well-acquainted with naval practices and traditions, the Cowes Yacht Club later transformed into the prestigious Royal Yacht Squadron. Here, traditional naval customs were infused with a touch of social refinement, giving birth to the Sail Past tradition.

The heart of the event, the "Review of the Fleet," carries a legacy spanning over 600 years of Royal Navy tradition and history. It was seamlessly integrated into yacht clubs, continuing the age-old practice of Navy Admirals (and sometimes even Royalty) reviewing the fleet on special occasions

This formal procedure dictated that a flagship be anchored, with the Admiral and their staff positioned on the Quarterdeck to gracefully receive and reciprocate salutes. As vessels sailed past, they paid their respects by dipping their colors, while captains and their crew stood at attention, rendering salutes. Leading the fleet in this grand procession was the Vice-Admiral, with the Rear Admiral bringing up the rear.

The Southport Yacht Club's tradition is almost identical, except that the salute is received by the Commodore and Naval representative instead of the Admiral and the salute is delivered by the passing boat, if under sail, by luffing its jib, or, if under power, by dipping its ensign. All of the crew on the saluting boats stand at attention facing the Commodore and visiting Navy Flag Officer. If there is insufficient wind, sailboats should have their engines on. Protocol dictates that until the sail past is completed, only the Flagship may be dressed (strung with bunting & flags). However, after the Sail Past, participating yachts are encouraged to dress their yacht on returning to the dock.

Determining fair market value is possible with a mix of industr y and financial knowledge. As a business broker and valuer, I have determined the value of many Australian businesses using various methods. The approach depends on the industry, business model, assets, and other factors.

The most common methods for valuing a business in Australia are the multiple of discretionary earnings method, the net asset value method, the discounted cash flow method and the liquidated method. Let’s discuss each in more detail:

Multiple of Discretionary Earnings

Otherwise known as a multiple of earnings. This method values a business based on its adjusted or normalised net profit. The two most common approaches are PEBITDA and EBITDA. Basically, one is under complete management, and the other has the proprietor or owner working in the business. The acronym stands for Proprietors Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation. You then multiply the PEBITDA or EBITDA earnings by a multiple, usually 1 to 4 times for a small to mid-sized business. Many factors contribute to the exact multiple used, including the industry, growth rate, risks, competition and other attributes.

For example, a manufacturing firm with $500,000 in EBITDA and an industry multiple of 2.7 would be valued at $1.35 million. This method works best for profitable businesses with steady cash flows. It is popular in Australia because it is easy to understand and implement.

Net Asset Value

The net asset value approach values a business based on the fair market value of its assets. This method is suitable for asset-heavy businesses where a multiple of earnings presents a lower value than the company’s assets, for example, a large charter boat operation. Add up the value of assets like plant and equipment, vehicles, vessels and stock, then add a year’s earnings. It’s important to note that we are discussing buying the business, not the entity; therefore, the sale would be transacted as a Going Concern.

Discounted Cash Flow

The DCF method estimates the present value of future cash flows to determine a business’s value. You forecast the business’s free cash flows for several years and then calculate the net present value of those cash flows using a discount rate that matches the risk of the business.

The DCF approach requires significant assumptions and financial modelling but can provide a solid valuation for high-growth companies. It accounts for the time value of money and the long-term potential of the business. However, small changes in assumptions like the discount or growth rate can lead to a wide range of valuations. This method is usually reserved for medium to larger businesses.

Lastly, the liquidation approach. Hopefully, this method is avoided, as it is used for insolvent businesses, where they need to sell the assets immediately. Therefore, liquidating anything of value and generally at a heavily discounted rate. The funds raised by liquidating the assets are then distributed to those who are owed money, and the company is wound up.

In summary, business valuation is part of art and science. Multiple methods may be combined to determine a fair value range for a business. But for most small to medium Australian businesses, the multiple of discretionary earnings approach and the net asset value method are simple, reliable ways to value the business. With some financial data and industry knowledge, you can gain insight into what your business may be worth so you can get out on the water sooner.

T he difference between Speed Over Ground (SOG) and Speed Through the Water (STW) is a common occurrence in boating. Here are some key points to understand why SOG and STW may differ:

1 SOG and STW: Satellite navigation systems calculate SOG, which is the actual speed of the boat relative to the Earth's surface. It is sometimes referred to as "speed over the chart." STW, on the other hand, is the speed measured by the boat's speed instrument or log, indicating the speed through the water.

Tidal or river currents: If the water in which your boat is floating is influenced by tidal or river currents, the current can affect the boat's speed relative to the ground. This can result in a difference between SOG and STW. For example, if there is a 1.1-knot tidal current against the boat's 21.9-knot STW, the resulting SOG would be 20.8 knots.

3 Other factors affecting speed: Variations between SOG and STW can also occur due to other factors that impact the boat, such as waves, wind, and additional current effects. These factors can affect the boat's progress through the water, leading to differences between SOG and STW.

4 Importance of measuring STW: Measuring STW allows you to assess your progress through the water accurately. It helps ensure you don't miss critical arrival times, such as reaching a tidal window, bridge opening, or lock operation. Understanding the impact of tidal currents also contributes to reducing your environmental footprint.

5 Calibrating the speed instrument: Speed instruments or logs use transducers, typically paddlewheel-type, to measure STW. It is essential to keep the transducer clean and free from fouling, as any obstruction can affect its accuracy. You can calibrate your speed instrument by comparing its readings with GPS-derived SOG in calm conditions with no current.

Errors in speed readings: Even with a clean transducer, there may be variations in the STW readings compared to the actual speed through the water. Factors such as hull design, hull condition, propeller effect, and water flow disturbance can contribute to inaccuracies. You can add a correction factor in your marine electronics to account for these errors.

7 Changes over time: Changes in STW can occur due to factors like extra load on the boat, hull fouling, engine issues, or propeller damage. These factors will also affect SOG. If you notice increasing variation between STW and SOG, it's important to check the transducer and ensure the satellite antenna has a clear view of the sky for consistent position information.

Understanding the differences between SOG and STW and monitoring them can provide valuable information for safe and efficient boating. Regular checks, maintenance, and calibration of your speed instrument will help ensure accurate speed measurements.

AVOIDING DIESEL CONTAMINATION

Diesel fuel can be referred to as any liquid fuel that is specifically designed for use in an internal combustion engine using the heat created by mechanical compression of the air in the cylinder to ignite a calibrated measurement of fuel.

These engines, called compression-ignition (CI) engines rely on the fuel to be within a specific range of a specific quality for reliable, clean, economic combustion. Diesel is derived not only from petroleum, but now commercially in a broad range of biomass, animal fats, biogas, and coal liquefaction sources, some of these having been in use as a source for over 100 years. All diesel fuels have common problems that dramatically affect the compression-ignition engine: algae, microbes, yeasts and water contamination.

With the ideal temperature for growth being between 10 and 50 degrees centigrade, ALL diesel fuels, no matter their source, decline in quality at differing rates, some surprisingly rapidly.

For example, microbial growth in biodiesel is a primary cause of contamination during fuel handling and storage. Being hygroscopic, it readily absorbs atmospheric moisture, and has a low oxidisation stability resulting in its lowered ability to resist chemical changes in long term storage. Notably, the introduced moisture reduces the high lubrication ability of the diesel fuel resulting in increased engine wear.

These microbial colonies are formed and live at the interface of fuel and water growing rapidly in warmer temperatures. They even grow in extreme cold weather areas resulting in microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) when fuel tank heaters are installed.

DIESEL FUEL TREATMENT SYSTEMS

As fuel deliveries are from a variety of sources globally, the fuels experience atmospheric and ocean seawater temperature variations causing the expansion and contraction of the liquid. This fuel is then transferred into large shoreside storage facilities exposed to the sun's radiant heat, weather and remnants of previous fuel deliveries laying within tanks and piping. The quality of your fuel and tanks can be (and most likely is) unknown. Even good quality, clean, perfect fuel turns “stale” quickly starting a rapid degradation of the entire fuel system from tank to exhaust. If you have ever had a sooty transom, that can be an indication the fuel combustion, and probably the fuel quality may not be optimal.

This unique PFM treatment of the hydrocarbon fuel at a molecular level assists in the removal of risks from bacteria and moisture. The treatment creates a molecular structure that is more readily ignited and used in combustion, resulting in reduced bacterial levels, moisture content, emissions (NOx and SOx).

Gold Coaster, Xavier Doerr forced to pause round Australia record attempt

On May 4, 2023, Xavier Doerr, a 22-year-old sailor from the Gold Coast, embarked on one of sailing's most daunting challenges - a solo, unassisted circumnavigation of Australia aboard the 21-foot Mini Transat carbon fibre race yacht named GCCM, sponsored by the Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard.

Xavier's voyage took an unexpected turn when he encountered a fierce weather system off the West Australian coast, necessitating an unplanned stop at the Fremantle Sailing Club on June 7 for vital repairs. But he kept going.

Sadly, his challenge came to an abrupt halt on July 7 in the Great Australian Bight, battling against 10-meter swells and cyclonic winds. Activation of his personal locator beacon initiated a rescue mission orchestrated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

LET’S ASK XAVIER WHAT HAPPENED

After hitting something in the night, I found my boat taking in water, leaving me unsure if the keel would stay attached and if I had any permanent injury, which was very confronting.

After the collision, communications were down. A huge wave tore away my storm board, resulting in further water intake. Thankfully, the extensive equipment onboard, courtesy of my sponsors, played a crucial role in preventing the vessel from sinking. Watertight compartments and huge amount of buoyancy foam in the bow and stern were instrumental. 6 onboard bilge pumps and a high-capacity gulper pump, connected to separate battery banks, aided in maintaining the water level, with credits to the electronic systems installed by Southern Seas Marine at GCCM.

HOW WERE YOU RESCUED AND HOW DID YOU RETRIEVE THE BOAT?

Following a strenuous 24-hour ordeal and 2 thwarted rescue attempts, I was safely medivaced to Adelaide for medical care.

I recovered the boat with the help of Port Lincoln fishing legend Graham Tapley and his crew (Bernie Henderson, Paul Dowd, John Hoey ) from Challenger, who embarked on a three-day mission to salvage my waterlogged boat, situated approximately 120 miles offshore. We towed her back to Port Lincoln amidst daunting conditions.

First inspection showed 16 hull perforations, lost mast and all onboard lines, deck fitting are destroyed. Deep scratches along the keel's sides and top hinted at a collision with a marine creature.

I would also like to send out a huge thank you to Bill, Will, Dave, Dan and Helen, Wendy and many other members of Port Lincoln Sailing Club who were there to help. I extend sincere thanks to Nick Bice from Bar Karate and CYCSA for their hospitality and assistance in Adelaide, along with Lofty from Keels on Wheels, who brought the boat back to Gold Coast City Marina for repairs.

IS THERE A PLAN TO REBUILD AND TRY AGAIN?

I will be rebuilding “GCCM” at Gold Coast City Marina, with the intention of getting it back on the water sailing. However currently, I do not have a mast, the boat has significant holes, the structure may be compromised and my budget is non-existent. Nevertheless, I will rebuild "GCCM" to the best of my ability and continue to sail her.

After solo sailing 3/4 of the way around Australia, I am disappointed with the records so close. However,

I am stoked to have made it this far, and loved the people I have met along the way. I will be back bigger, better, and with a smile. I will be making every attempt to repair my boat at Gold Coast City Marina, who I am thankful to have as my incredibly supportive title sponsor.

My abridged shore team of Lee Randal, PJ Habner, and Jason Sintome, have also had a huge week, dealing with not only everything on water, but with the wider international media. They have done an amazing job, and I am hugely thankful to them.

2023 Noosa Gaff Regatta Results

The 2023 Noosa Gaff Regatta delivered a spectacular weekend of thrilling sailing action that left spectators in awe and competitors on the edge of their seats. With picture-perfect conditions, courtesy of the talented photographer NEALE BERTRAM, this event will be etched in maritime history.

Saturday's sailing saw favorable breezes of up to 10 knots, setting the stage for a thrilling prelude to Sunday's excitement, where the winds picked up to a brisk 18 knots from the East-Southeast. As the wind roared, the Cygnet20 boats came to life, giving the local competition a run for their money.

What unfolded was nothing short of remarkable – a script that could not have been written better. Five Cygnets graced the regatta with their presence, ensuring that no one was left out in the actionpacked festivities. Every Cygnet made its mark on the racecourse, with Steve's Dreamkumtrue securing two well-deserved first-place finishes and toppling the local champion, high flying Frenchman Val Oddoux, aboard his O’day 20 Petit Blue

In the initial three races, sailed under light 5-10 knot winds, Alan Scott on Chittra showcased the Cygnets' pedigree, stealing the limelight with a commanding first-place finish, thanks in part to his large radial-cut jib. The second race witnessed local single-handed sailor Rick Morgan, at the helm of David's Cygnet, exploring

the Cygnet's potential with local knowledge. Despite the advantage of a larger jib, Neil Patchett’s Cygnet 20 clinched the victory, complete with a full crew, cockpit cushions, and retro sailing attire.

Race 3 witnessed Rick Morgan on David’s Cygnet taking the lead, challenging Petit Blue, and finally securing a victory. Cygnet was proving it could give a tough competition to Val.

At the end of Day 1, Cygnet crew gathered at the yacht club for dinner, relishing the day's exciting racing. Steve and family aboard Dreamkumtrue, while far behind the other Cygnets, kept spirits high with their humour, joking about Steve's "slow boat" and wanting a refund.

On the subsequent day, Races 4 to 6 unfolded in intense 20+ knot winds. Dreamkumtrue transformed into a racing thoroughbred thanks to Noosa club champion Andris, demonstrating remarkable improvement. Dreamkumtrue secured first place in race 4 and raced neck and neck with Petit Blue, making Val worry about the Cygnet's newfound potential.

Race 5 was a turning point as Steve’s Dreamkumtrue and Andris triumphed over Petit Blue after a fierce battle, resulting in Val's boat retiring due to gear failure. Dreamkumtrue claimed the top spot.

Race 6 solidified Dreamkumtrue and Andris's dominance, as they secured two first-place victories, leaving everyone in awe. However, a surprise awaited them in the final race, where David Simonds and his crew aboard Bacchus led from start to finish, snatching the victory from the clear favorites, Dreamkumtrue

The Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club hosted a remarkable racing weekend, showcasing the pedigree of every Cygnet. Participants eagerly await the next Cygnet gathering and next year's Noosa event.

David Simonds from Bacchus shared his excitement, saying, "What a fun event. John and I really enjoyed the hospitality of NYRC and the company of likeminded people. It was great fun sailing with all the Cygnets. We were very pleased to finally win the last race overtaking Dreamkumtrue, halfway through that race. We were shocked to then be awarded first place, which must have been a very close thing. We then had three more days motor sailing 17 nautical miles up to campsite 3 in the upper Noosa River. It was a fabulous trip. We highly recommend the experience and look forward to next time."

VISION OF ISLANDS True love never ends

Boats are amazing as they carry the stories of each owner, the happy memories, the adventure. The boat Pacific Hawk was insured with Pantaenius for many years, during which time the catamaran enjoyed the different sights of Australia and was incredibly well cared for. Eventually, however, it was time to let her go and she was sold on to the lovely Margaret and John who also insured Pacific Hawk with Pantaenius.

Now, one of the best things about our jobs at Pantaenius is hearing about everyone’s story, and everyone does have a story. The girls in our Gold Coast office got to hear first-hand the love story of John and Margaret when John visited our office to insure the boat. We were so taken back by it, we just had to share it with all of you.

John, 74, and Margaret, 72, first met when they were in medical school. They dated for a short time but eventually went their separate ways, chased their passions and excelled in their chosen fields. They both lived separate lives, had families

and lived fulfilling lives. At some point however a s mall void opened which was filled when John and Margaret reconnected by coincidence. Their past emotions for one another were quick to return and they are now happy together. Seeking to do more and help more, they purchased Pacific Hawk for their own adventures but more so for their nonprofit ‘Vision of Islands’ which operates in the South Pacific which we will describe below. To top off the story, while at the airport exchanging the registration papers for the vessel they also got engaged! You are never too old to find love again and promise to be there for someone until death do you part. To say our team was moved by this story is an understatement.

Now, what is ‘Vision of Islands’?

Vision of Islands is a non-profit volunteer eye surgical and clinical team who provide services free of charge in the Pacific Islands. Vision of Islands was founded by John. He is a cataract specialist and has run a number of trips with his team which were unfortunately halted due to the pandemic. 2023’s trip will be their first since the pandemic, and they will be treating hundreds of patients in the Pacific Islands this year.

As per Vision of Islands: “We work under the direction of the Ministry of Health of each participating country to provide medical outreach team visits, involving and training the local medical staff in patient care, providing medical and teaching equipment and training local staff in their use. We extend our specialist eye services to remote areas where people lack specialist services.

THE CAPRICORN BUNKER GROUP SOUTHERN GREAT BARRIER REEF

The Capricorn Bunker Group of islands and reefs is the perfect and accessible introduction to the Great Barrier Reef. Cruising this section of the Southern Great Barrier Reef is an unforgettable experience and offers exceptional reef viewing, cruising, snorkelling and diving. The Southern Great Barrier Reef is rich in sea life, coral and scenery. Navigation through the Capricorn Bunker Group can be effortless as most of the reefs have islands and wide channels between them.

LADY MUSGRAVE ISLAND

Lady Musgrave Island is instantly recognisable, with a large coral lagoon with deep water access. This tropical paradise and sheltered lagoon provides a safe anchorage and abounds with

masses of fish, coral and turtles. Keep a look out for coral bommies when navigating in the lagoon, but with clear tropical water, spotting and avoiding them is easy and of course they are all marked on navigational charts. Lady Musgrave is the jewel in the crown of the Southern Great Barrier Reef and a very popular destination of choice.

FITZROY REEF

Fitzroy Reef is another stunning lagoon with a deep water entrance, but without a land mass. Deep anchorage on the southwest corner will protect from a north easterly and a north westerly wind. The deep water entrance is marked clearly for a good anchorage inside the lagoon. There is excellent fishing in the area.

WISTARI REEF

Adjacent to Heron Island, Wistari Reef is an elevated lagoon, which is shallow and crammed with coral. The best dive site on this reef is the brilliant Wistari Wall. This sloping wall drops from three metres to 20 metres and is decorated with many striking corals. There is also excellent reef walking and snorkelling. There is shelter in the lee of the reef for anchorage.

MAST HEAD ISLAND

Mast Head Island is a beautiful and accessible coral island close to Irving Reef, Polmaise Reef and Erskine Island. It is located just 31NM northeast of Gladstone. Boaters can shelter in the lee of the island to anchor in SE to NE winds. The island is popular with campers and day-trippers due to its close proximity to Gladstone. Camping on the island requires a permit.

NORTH WEST ISLAND

North West Island is a hidden gem of the Southern Great Barrier Reef and only 40NM northeast of Gladstone. It is the second largest coral cay in the area and offers opportunities for camping, bushwalking, nature study, reef walking, diving and snorkelling. Camping on the island requires a permit.

Hamilton Island

RACE WEEK

Af inal blast to the Molle Islands and back in trade winds up to 22 knots closed out the 38th Hamilton Island Race Week and decided the trophy winners in divisions where the top placings were still up for grabs.

The near 180-strong fleet featured a cross section of boats from every Australian state plus five international yachts, four from New Zealand and one from New Caledonia. Close to 2,000 sailors put on a sensational display across the week, both in terms of performance and mateship. Heartfelt stories from around the waterfront included crews with skilled trades among them arriving to make repairs on damaged boats, without a call for help going out.

After the final day of racing, the sailing community gathered for one last time at Race Week, at the Hamilton Island Conference Centre, to receive their accolades and celebrate an important milestone alongside the Oatley family - 20 years since they acquired Hamilton Island.

Rating Divisions - Duncan Hine's RP66 Alive was the Rating Division 1 guaranteed victor prior to the final 32 nautical mile traditional series-ending Molle Islands race. The Tasmanian mini maxi scored consecutive firsts across seven races, crewman Darren Jones saying, "it was an incredible week. We are very lucky to have such a solid team on board."

Some of the legends on Alive's crew list include Chris Nicholson, Stu Bannatyne and Adrienne Cahalan, who has signed on as navigator for this year's Rolex Sydney Hobart. "The blend of really good experience at the back of the boat and personalities that all combine make a solid team, which is shown in the results," Jones added. "With these island races and the tide running, local knowledge comes into it and again, we have amazing experience, which means we can pick and choose from the data we get. We are doing the program leading up to the Hobart Race. We've really turned Alive into a windward/leeward boat, which is a different mindset."

In Rating Division 2, David Doherty's TP52 from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Matador, almost made a clean sweep - their worst was a second place. "We

had the best week; we didn't make many mistakes and the boat is quick at the moment," Doherty said.

Jared Macquart's chartered Adams 10, Wazza Red Boat, led from go to whoa in Rating Division 3 and in Rating Division 4, Ray Roberts added yet another Race Week trophy to his impressive stockpile - Team Hollywood's sixth win back-to-back.

David Ross' well-sailed Cape 31 Kukukerchu took it to Roberts' team but couldn't knock the champions off, finishing in second place by two points in Rating Division 4. Multihull Black Division top boat was Kevin Jones' Queensland Schionning 1800 called Esprit and Mal Billings' Perry 43, Twin Spirit, took out Multihull White top honours.

Most of the Race Week fleet fall under the Hamilton Island Class umbrella and right across the five divisions, epic battles raged. Some of the top scorers include Phillip Neil's picture-perfect Hoek Tc78 Drumfire (Blue Division), David Rose's slippery Queensland Welbourn 42 Wedgetail (Pink Division) and Simon Oliver's Pogo 36 Odyssey, winner of Hamilton Island Yellow Division.

Michael and Elizabeth Goss' modified Snook design, Halcyon, successfully defended their trailable title. "It's been a tough week with pretty heavy sailing for these boats, but it's such a beautiful place to sail," said Michael. "There were highlights like whales breaching within 20 feet of us, and looking behind and seeing the amazing multihulls," added Elizabeth.

Regatta director, Denis Thompson, has been part of Race Week since 2006. Over many years he has fine-tuned the race management and choice of amazing courses that are designed to give sailors the best day's racing in the Whitsundays. "Year-to-year it's not a revolution, it's an evolution," said Thompson. "The breeze blessed us and while the last couple of days were heavier. Most were able to handle it. We have courses to keep the small boats in flatwater and out of the main seaway and with the fleet getting more dynamic. We don't have boats that struggle to windward anymore," he finished.
