QUALITY PRE-OWNED YACHTS FOR SALE

As I write this, we have just witnessed the impact of TC Alfred, the first tropical cyclone to affect Southeast Queensland since 1975. Fortunately, early warnings allowed people to seek shelter or evacuate to safer areas in time. Boaters were also advised by the Water Police and Maritime Safety Queensland to secure their vessels and prepare for the strong winds and heavy rain that preceded the arrival of the cyclone.

While no major boating incidents have been reported as of this writing, the intensity of the cyclone serves as a reminder of the dangers these storms can bring. Beyond wind damage and flooding, lightning strikes pose a significant risk during such extreme weather events. It is crucial to remain off the water and, if possible, avoid open areas, and stay clear of trees and power lines during storms. Preparedness measures, such as securing loose objects on the deck, having an emergency kit ready, and staying informed through official updates, can make all the difference to ensuring safety during future storms. (See page 10.)

As we are recovering from this weather event, we acknowledge that we are now approaching the season of boats in our part of the Southern Hemisphere.

We are thrilled to share the 2025 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show Special Feature issue with our valued readers. This exclusive buying guide will be a key resource during the busy boat sales and service season, offering an exceptional platform to view the boats and marine services on offer in our showcase magazine.

As you browse the articles, you will realise that boating has evolved further than just learning to cope with anchors, ropes, sails, bilge pumps and corrosion. With new technology finding ever more numerous applications in the boating industry, buying or owning a boat may even seem more complicated than back in the “good ol’ days”, when some people worried about was whether their boat would float. Well, don’t be intimidated. If you are open to learning the ropes and get the right advice, “the (boating) world is your oyster” (puns intended)! Read on for useful information which will help when deciding which boat to buy—whether new or pre-owned. (See page 20.)

Also included are many resources you can use to provide peace of mind as you embark on, or continue with, your boating life. Aside from friendly boat dealers and reliable boat surveyors, there are even training courses that not only teach basics and refresh your knowledge but also give you skills specifically tailored to your own boat, needs and circumstances. (See page 36.) If you think that you need to drive or travel to view a boat to buy, think again! Virtual reality (VR) technology provides a more convenient way to get a feel for a boat that you are considering buying. You can now do a walk-through without even setting foot on board — thanks to VR! (See page 42.)

If you are “not into technology”, don’t fret. Basic boat buying and operating principles are as relevant today as they were decades ago. There is nothing wrong with keeping it simple. Providing safety is placed first and foremost on every boater’s list, you can do whatever “floats your boat” (pun intended…again)! Note, if you operate a commercial boat, there are new requirements for safety management systems (SMS). (See page 56.)

This issue of BOAT GC magazine also highlights the expansion of the superyacht industry, with increasing services available at The Boat Works and Gold Coast City Marina. Enjoy reading and, as always, keep safe and have fun out on the water!

Stay Safe Aboard When

LIGHTNING STRIKES!

Lightning is a force of nature that's both fascinating and terrifying. For yacht owners, it's not just a dramatic light show flashing through the sky, it's a real risk that could strike when you least expect it. With lightning hitting earth more than 8 million times daily, it's worth understanding how this natural phenomenon can affect your boat, especially in storm-prone areas like Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and increasingly, the Mediterranean.

When lightning hits your vessel, the consequences can range from electrical chaos to severe structural damage. So, how can you safeguard your floating haven from this unpredictable force of nature? Let’s dive into the impacts of lightning on yachts and explore protective measures that can be used to keep you, your crew, and your vessel safe.

THE SCARY REALITY OF LIGHTNING STRIKES

Yachts today are tech-heavy. From GPS, AIS and autopilot, to radar, MFD’s and satellite communication systems, almost everything is interconnected; and when it comes to lightning that is a vulnerability. A lightning strike can send a surge through this network, potentially damaging or destroying critical sailing and safety systems.

But it doesn’t stop at electronics. Although it’s a much rarer occurrence, there’s the potential for structural damage that can be just as catastrophic. Lightning follows the path of least resistance so when it encounters obstacles like wooden masts or fibreglass hulls, it’s possible for the energy to cause cracking, splitting, or even explosions. For vessels with metal hulls, the risk is lower, but the current must still be safely grounded to prevent damage.

HOW LIGHTNING CAN HIT

Lightning on open water is no small matter, and its effects depend on whether your boat suffers a direct strike or indirect strike. Understanding how both can impact the yacht is a starting point to finding practical ways to mitigate the chance for damage.

DIRECT LIGHTNING STRIKES

When lightning hits your yacht, it targets the tallest object, usually hitting the mast first. The current can travel down through the boat's structure, often wreaking havoc on electronic systems. There’s also the potential for it to cause fires, and even damage the hull or keel. The energy seeks the quickest path to water. But if it encounters resistance, it may blast through materials, splitting rudders, damaging wiring or blowing apart fittings.

INDIRECT LIGHTNING STRIKES

Even if lightning doesn’t strike your vessel directly, the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) generated can still damage your electronics. EMPs create surges in electrical systems frying navigation tools, communication devices, and entertainment equipment. This can happen when lightning hits the water nearby, or even another sailboat in the anchorage. The fallout from a direct or indirect lightning strike can be severe. There is the potential for a dangerous situation aboard, followed by hefty repair or replacement costs and months of lost cruising time. The good thing is, there are some things you can do to help mitigate the risk of lightning damage.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR RIDING OUT A STORM

When a storm looms there are preventative actions you can take to help keep your crew and boat safe. If you spot lightning or hear thunder, follow these measures:

● Seek the safety of a marina or protected cove, avoiding open water where your yacht can become a prime target.

● Minimise contact with metal objects like railings and shrouds, and keep everyone on board, away from water.

● Disconnect shore power, turn off electronics, and remove antenna plugs to help prevent damage from EMPs and voltage surges.

● If you have one, ensure your lightning protection system is properly installed and maintained; connective components like sinks, cooktops, and batteries should all be grounded to minimise internal voltage differences.

● Place critical electronics inside an EMP shielded case.

LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEMS

Now here’s the thing - you can’t stop lightning from striking. But you can control what happens when it does. A well designed lightning protection setup can reduce the risk of severe damage to your hull and electronics. These systems aim to control the strike’s impact and direct the current safely into the water.

LIGHTNING CONDUCTORS

The idea behind a lightning conductor is to direct the path of the current in a way that minimises the severity of the strike’s damage. The basic setup includes lightning rods on the mast, heavy duty copper or steel conductors, and a grounding plate or keel to safely channel the charge into the water. For aluminium and steel yachts, the metal hull acts as a natural conductor. For fibreglass or wooden boats, though, things get trickier. A robust setup is non-negotiable.

HIGH TECH LIGHTNING PROTECTION SOLUTIONS

When it comes to lightning protection aboard boats, there are technically operated protection systems that have been thoroughly tested to prove their efficacy in preventing lightning strikes.

One system is the DDCE marine lightning protection system from Dinnteco. Unlike traditional methods, which aim to manage a strike after it happens, the DDCE works to prevent the strike altogether. It does this by neutralising the buildup of negative charges in the air, stopping a lightning channel from forming near your boat. Properly installed, this system reduces the chances of a strike dramatically and has gained recognition as an effective lightning deterrent. A downside can be that it’s a pricier option. But still it’s worth considering for those who spend significant time in lightning prone areas or would like the peace of mind.

Another system is the Sertec CMCE Marine, which operates on the same principles as the DDCE. A passive sensor system stabilises the surrounding electrical field in a way that stops the formation of a tracer, reducing the chance of a direct hit.

SHIELDING YOUR ELECTRONICS

A surge protection system adds another layer of defense against lightning. The purpose of this setup is to keep your navigation gear, lights, and onboard electronics safe from voltage spikes caused by nearby strikes. It’s a bit like wearing a seatbelt - maybe it won’t stop the accident, but it’ll reduce the damage. Installing shielded cable ducts and specialised lightning arresters are two ways you can help ensure your setup can handle the power of a surge.

PROTECTING YOUR SAILBOAT FROM LIGHTNING

Lightning strikes are unpredictable, but preparation makes all the difference. With the right protection system, you can reduce the risk of catastrophic damage to your yacht and its systems. Investing in surge protection, lightning conductors, and preventative technologies not only safeguards your boat, but can also give you peace of mind during storm season.

If you’ve weathered a lightning strike or have tips to share, send an email to editor@boatgoldcoast.com.au. Let’s work together to share information and make the sailing community safer, one boat at a time!

BThe Journey to the Perfect Boat

BASIC BUYING TIPS

uying a boat can be an overwhelming experience with numerous options available. To make an informed decision, take a thoughtful approach and consider all aspects of ownership.

UNDERSTANDING NEEDS

Before visiting a dealership, determine what is needed from the boat. Consider the primary activities, such as fishing, water sports, or leisure cruising. The boat’s size and seating capacity should match the number of passengers who will regularly use it. A clear understanding of these factors will help narrow down the choices.

FINDING THE RIGHT BOAT

Beginners may find a simple aluminium boat, or ‘tinnie,’ ideal due to its lightweight and easy handling. However, for those needing more space and flexibility, a runabout provides wind protection and ample seating. Bowriders offer a comfortable cruising experience, while cabin boats provide shelter from the elements and additional versatility for various activities. Selecting the right type ensures maximum enjoyment and usability.

SEEKING ADVICE FROM EXPERIENCED BOATERS

Speaking with seasoned boat owners can provide invaluable insights. Online forums, local clubs, and social groups are great places to ask for recommendations and experiences. Many boaters are more than happy to share advice on maintenance, fuel efficiency, and common pitfalls to avoid when buying a boat.

RENTING A BOAT FOR THE DAY

Before making a final decision, consider renting a similar boat for a day. Experiencing how it handles, checking the comfort level, and assessing the ease of operation can prevent buyer’s remorse. This handson approach provides clarity on what features are necessary and which ones are unnecessary.

SPENDING A DAY ON A FRIEND’S BOAT

If renting isn't an option, going out on a friend’s boat can also provide valuable insights. Pay attention to how different models handle different water conditions, how comfortable they are for extended periods, and whether they provide adequate protection from wind and spray. Practical experience often highlights what truly matters in a boat.

SELECTING THE RIGHT ENGINE

The choice of an engine significantly impacts performance. A 4-stroke outboard engine operates quietly and efficiently, making it ideal for family outings, whereas a petrol inboard opens up the rear of the boat for boarding and watersports. A diesel or hybrid diesel-electric provides cruising economy. For beginners, a 4-stroke engine offers a smoother and more manageable experience on the water.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT DEALER

Finding a reputable dealer is crucial. Research accredited dealers and visit multiple locations to ask questions and compare options. Selecting a local

dealer provides the added benefit of easy access to after-sales support and maintenance services.

TAKING IT FOR A SPIN

A test drive is essential before making a purchase. Pay attention to handling, comfort, and stability, preferably in slightly choppy waters to assess performance. Bringing along regular passengers ensures that the boat meets everyone’s needs.

PRIORITISING COMFORT AND PROTECTION OVER FANCY

FEATURES

While sleek designs and high-speed capabilities may seem appealing, prioritising comfort and protection from the elements is more important for long-term enjoyment. A well-designed cabin, ample seating, and durable materials will enhance the boating experience far more than unnecessary luxury features.

DECIDING BETWEEN NEW AND USED

New boats come with warranties and customisation options but are more expensive. Used boats offer cost savings but require careful inspection to avoid unexpected repairs.

Weighing the advantages and disadvantages of each option ensures a choice that aligns with budget and long-term expectations.

Finally, taking the time to research and evaluate options ensures that the right boat is selected for years of enjoyment on the water.

Voyage of Dreams

The Artful Journey of Ping Lian Yeak

In the bustling streets around Sydney harbour, amidst the lively hum of The Rocks Market, a remarkable artist shares his world through intricate lines and vibrant colours. Ping Lian Yeak, an autistic savant artist, with severe limitations in social, behavioural and communication skills, captivates passersby with his extraordinary talent, transforming everyday scenes into mesmerising works of art. His journey, however, is as inspiring as the masterpieces he creates.

Born in Malaysia, Ping Lian faced immense challenges early in life. His mother, Sarah SH Lee, recalls his early struggles—hyperactivity, difficulty holding a pencil, and an inability to use scissors. Yet, with unwavering determination, she introduced him to tracing and drawing exercises to develop his motor skills. What began as a therapeutic practice soon blossomed into a breathtaking display of talent. By the age of eight, Ping Lian’s artistic prowess had begun to emerge, and by fifteen, his own gallery was established in Malaysia. Funded by The Art Commune and supported by JPMorgan Chase Foundation (for 2009) in collaboration with ABWM.

His works, characterised by intricate linear details and an explosion of colour, convey an energy that is both raw and refined. Whether depicting the iconic Sydney Opera House, Luna Park, or boats gliding across the water, Ping Lian’s passion for observation breathes life into his subjects. Boats, in particular, hold a special place in his heart, inspiring many of his compositions. His fascination with the sea even led him to become ardently interested in viewing copies of Boat Gold Coast Magazine, absorbing every detail with keen enthusiasm.

Recognition for his exceptional talent has transcended the label of autism. His works have been exhibited in prestigious locations, including New York’s Agora Gallery. The 2015 exhibition, “Out From Down Under & Beyond: Fine Art From Australia & New Zealand,” was a defining moment—his art was selected not out of sympathy, but for its undeniable brilliance. His works have also been exhibited at the United Nations in New York City by Strokes of Genius, Inc.

Dr. Darold A. Treffert, a world-renowned expert on savant syndrome, describes Ping Lian as one of the rare

“prodigious savants,” a small group of individuals whose talents reach extraordinary heights. His art is not just visually stunning but serves as a beacon of hope, touching the lives of people across the globe.

Sarah SH Lee has meticulously documented her son’s journey in the book I Want To Be Artist: An Autistic Savant’s Voice and a Mother’s Dream Transformed Onto Canvas. Published in 2017, the book has become an inspiration to both the autistism community and the art world, highlighting the power of perseverance, love, and belief.

Today, visitors to The Rocks Market can find Ping Lian every weekend, setting up his stall with his mother. Here, he not only displays his talents through live drawings but also engages with people, observing life through his own unique lens. His presence is a reminder that talent knows no boundaries, and that passion, when nurtured with love and dedication, can transform challenges into triumphs.

This year, Ping Lian will take part in the Multicultural Inclusion Painting Exhibition at the NSW Parliament House from June 3–26, 2025. As his art continues to inspire, his story stands as a testament to the power of resilience, artistry, and the boundless potential within us all.

Boredom Busters for Kids on a boat

I’m bored! If you had a dollar for every time your kids complain ed like this, you could probably buy another boat, right? Fortunately, the ultimate boredom buster is already at your dock.

A boat is more than just a vessel; it’s a floating playground, a classroom, and an adventure waiting to happen. Whether you’re out fo r a day trip or an extended cruise, here are five ways to keep kids entertained on board.

1. TRY OUT WATERSPORTS

Get active on the water with a varie ty of watersports. Whether it’s wakeboarding, waterskiing, tubing, or stand up paddleboarding, there’s something for every age and skill level. Let kids take turns trying new activities and cheer each other on. Not only does this keep them entertained, but it also helps them build confidence and coordination while making unforgettable memories on the water.

2 . TEACH THEM TO TIE KNOTS

Even preschoolers learning to tie their shoes can master basic boating knots. Start with a bowline using the classic “rabbit and

the hole” method, then move on to the clove hitch, square knot, and other essentials. The internet is filled with illustrated guides and video tutorials to help them perfect their skills. This hands-on activity not only teaches practical seamanship but also helps improve fine motor skills and problem-solving abilities.

3

. PLAY “I SPY” WHILE CRUISING

Turn a simple boat ride into an interactive game of observation. "I spy with my little eye" takes on a nautical twist when you challenge kids to spot red buoys, sandy beaches, seagulls, or even a passing cruise ship. To mix things up, turn it into a counting game: how many sailboats can they find in an hour? How many fish can they spot near the anchorage? The possibilities are endless, and the game keeps kids engaged with their surroundings.

4. PLOT A TRIP TOGETHER

Engage kids in navigation by spreading out nautical charts or using an electronic chartplotter. Explain distances and estimated travel times to help them unde rstand how

long it take s to reach different destinations. Assign age-appropriate tasks, such as researching marinas, nearby islands, or waterfront restaurants. When kids feel involved in the planning process, they become more invested in the journey itself.

5. COOK UP SOME FUN IN THE GALLEY

Turn mealtime into an activity by involving kids in the cooking process. Let them help with provisioning, meal prep, and simple recipes. If they enjoy fishing, challenge them to catch dinner and assist in cooking it. Whether they’re making sandwiches, mixing pancake batter, or grilling freshly caught fish, working in a boat’s galley teaches valuable life skills while keeping them entertained.

With a little creativity, your boat can transform into the ultimate boredom buster. From games and waterspo rts to cooking and navigation, there are endless ways to keep kids entertained while making lifelong memories on the water. So, the next time you hear “I’m bored,” just point to the horizon and set sail for fun!

The Triple J Paul Burt

une and July bring some of the coolest months of the year, a time when many anglers focus on bream, tailor, and snapper as the staple catches. However, there are two other species that thrive in our estuaries during this period—the mangrove jack and the jewfish.

For as long as I can remember, these two species have coexisted well and are often caught side by side. While mangrove jacks are commonly found in canal systems and the upper reaches of rivers

to the entrances of coastal bars, rock walls, and snag-filled areas as temperatures drop. Here, clean ocean water pushes in, and baitfish gather in large numbers, providing the perfect conditions for jacks and jewfish to bulk up.

Whether they arrive to breed or for other reasons isn’t entirely clear, but one thing is certain—some of the jacks caught during this time can exceed 4 kg in weight and measure over 68 cm in length.

IG JACKS AND JEWFISH

Mangrove jacks, part of the Lutjanus family, are formidable sport fish that demand serious tackle. Larger specimens require at least 40lb braid, a 60lb leader, and a PE3 spin or overhead setup. The recommended hook is a solid 5/0, with just enough weight to get your live bait to the bottom—heavy enough to sink but not so much that it snags instantly. The key is to use just enough weight so that the fish doesn’t feel the resistance when it strikes.

jewfish have a similar hunting style but tend to go after larger prey such as mullet or legal-size tailor. However, it’s not uncommon to see metre-plus jewfish aggressively chasing smaller yellowtail (yakkas) or similar baitfish.

Fortunately, the same tackle setup works for both jacks and jewfish, meaning there’s no need to constantly switch gear—just ensure your drag is properly set and pay attention to water colour, as it plays a crucial role in a successful day.

BEST CONDITIONS AND TECHNIQUES

I prefer to fish during the first stage of a tide change—whether the tide is running in or out—as long as there’s turbulent water and a current line forming around rock walls or submerged structures. These "pressure points" create pockets of slowermoving water where fish conserve energy while waiting to ambush prey. Position your boat on the edge of this current line and drop your bait straight down rather than casting. Casting can cause your sinker to plunge directly into snags, reducing your chances of a clean hookup.

Fishing with a vertical setup is far more effective. Ideally, catching live bait from the same area you’re fishing will improve your chances, but oceangoing live baits like yellowtail/yakkas are perfect alternatives. Herring can be a bit small and may struggle with a double hook 5/0 rig, while mullet also work well—just ensure they aren’t too big for jacks to take in one strike.

A bit of rain can also work in your favour. When fresh water pushes baitfish out with the currents, it creates a feeding frenzy, making conditions ideal for targeting both species. Be aware though, sharks also show up

in numbers during these periods, often becoming a major problem for anglers trying to land their catch.

SCORE THE TRIPLE J

So, when the water and weather cool, try for a double header—a jewfish and a jack. And if you land them in June or July, congratulations—you've scored the Triple J!

See you at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show and be sure to come up and say g’day!

ISLAND GYPSY 40 WIDEBODY

For decades, Island Gypsy Boats have been synonymous with elegance, practicality, and the perfect balance of form and function. Among their most iconic models, the Island Gypsy 40 Widebody stands out as a beacon of the brand’s ingenuity and attention to detail. This timeless vessel has won the hearts of boating enthusiasts for its spacious design, seaworthiness, and ability to cater to both casual cruisers and adventurers. As the brand continues to innovate, Island Gypsy is preparing to unveil a revolutionary new offering in the next 6-12 months, promising to solidify its place as a leader in the marine industry.

THE RISE OF THE ISLAND GYPSY 40 WIDEBODY

The Island Gypsy 40 Widebody, first introduced in 2024, has quickly become a bestseller and a fan favourite. It was designed with the serious cruiser in mind, offering exceptional space and comfort while still maintaining a practical layout. The Widebody configuration maximises interior volume, providing generous living spaces typically found on much larger vessels. This makes it perfect for families or couples looking for long-term cruising options without sacrificing comfort.

One of the standout features of the Island Gypsy 40 Widebody is its practical layout with large windows that let in plenty of natural light and offer panoramic views of the surrounding seascape. The vessel boasts an expansive main salon galley. Below deck, the 2 cabins are equally spacious, and a head that offers comfort and functionality, even on extended voyages. The use of high-quality materials and the

new gloss timber Oak Finish exclusive to Island Gypsy really sets us apart from the rest.

Another reason for the success of the Island Gypsy 40 Widebody is its performance. The vessel's semidisplacement hull, strikes a balance between speed and stability, allowing for efficient fuel consumption and a comfortable ride. This makes the vessel well-suited for coastal adventures.

EVOLUTION IN DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

Over the years, Island Gypsy has continued to evolve in both design and technology, maintaining its reputation as a trusted and innovative brand in the boating world. While the classic charm of the Island Gypsy 40 remains a core part of the brand’s identity, the new Widebody models have embraced new materials, improved hull designs, and cutting-edge technology to meet the demands of today’s yacht owners.

In recent years, Island Gypsy has placed an increased focus on fuel efficiency and low maintenance design. Modern engines are paired with advanced propulsion systems that allow for quieter, more efficient cruising.

Technology has also played a significant role in enhancing the onboard experience. Island Gypsy has incorporated smart systems into their yachts, including integrated navigation and control systems, allowing captains to monitor all critical functions from a single screen. These systems simplify yacht operation, making it easier for owners to handle the vessel without a full crew.

Design-wise, Island Gypsy has not been afraid to experiment with more contemporary aesthetics while still retaining the classic lines that define the brand. The result is a fleet of yachts that appeal to both traditionalists and modernists alike, offering the best of both worlds. From upgraded materials to sleek finishes, today’s Island Gypsys are designed to be luxurious yet practical, perfect for the discerning yacht owner.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR ISLAND GYPSY?

As Island Gypsy continues to evolve, the brand has something extraordinary on the horizon. Over the next 6-12 months, the company is preparing to unveil something

special that is set to revolutionise the world of cruising yachts. While the details are being kept under wraps, insiders suggest that this new offering will combine cutting-edge technology with a reimagined design that pushes the boundaries of what a yacht in this class can achieve. This exciting release is expected to build on the brand’s legacy of innovation while addressing the changing needs of today’s yachting community. It’s an ambitious project that will not only raise the bar for Island Gypsy but also set a new standard for yachts in its class. As anticipation builds, the industry is buzzing with excitement for what’s to come.

WHY ISLAND GYPSY?

The success of the Island Gypsy 40 Widebody is a testament to the brand’s commitment to quality, comfort, and performance. Over the years, Island Gypsy has stayed true to its roots while evolving to meet the needs of modern yacht owners. With exciting innovations on the horizon, the brand is poised to continue its dominance in the boating world, offering unmatched quality and a cruising experience that sets it apart from the competition. GOLD COAST ANTIFOUL & MARINE COVERS

Gold Coast Antifoul and RB Marine Covers combine to create a unique, comprehensive boat service centre situated within the Runaway Bay Marina. Positioned conveniently on the Broadwater, it serves as the perfect destination to rejuvenate your boat through a variety of services, including minor fibreglass repairs, annual antifouling, and marine cover and upholstery repair or replacement.

Antifoul Bottom Painting: Protecting your boat's hull from micro-organisms that can compromise its integrity and performance is crucial. Boat antifouling, a special type of paint applied to the hull's bottom, forms a protective barrier that shields your vessel from marine life. The effectiveness of this coating typically ranges from 12 to 18 months, depending on your location. In areas with high tidal flow, more frequent antifouling may be necessary due to a greater number of microorganisms attaching to the boat. Gold Coast Antifoul also offers Propspeed propeller antifoul, which can enhance your boat's performance and fuel efficiency.

Marine Covers and Upholstery: The marine environment is harsh, making high-quality covers essential for protecting your boat, whether it's on the water, moored, on a trailer, or in storage. As a reputable marine trimmer, Gold Coast Antifoul and RB Marine Covers use top-quality UV-stable canvases, such as Sunbrella or Weather-Max 80, along with a lifetime PTFE thread brand like Profolin, Healius, or Tenara. Their skilled machinists reinforce edges and finish with a waterproofing spray to ensure watertightness. The team is capable of repairing or replacing various elements, including biminis, camping covers, clears, zippers, midge screens, window shields, hatch covers, and even full boat covers. Additionally, they can repair or replace indoor and outdoor upholstery and bedding throughout your vessel.

Hull Polishing: The highly-trained team specialises in boat detailing and cleaning, providing a range of services. Their detailing packages encompass washing the boat from the waterline, cleaning under hatches, and all grooves and tracks. They will efficiently remove salt, bird droppings, water stains, and grime. Subsequently, they employ a proven hull restoration method to buff and polish the gelcoat, restoring the boat's shine while applying a protective coating.

The team takes great pride in providing swift and exceptionally professional service from skilled tradespeople, addressing all your boat maintenance requirements. For a free estimate on all these services, call Paul Tuesley Ph: 0417 173 257

Interview with boaters Kim & Gayle

Advanced Nautical Training

It had been over 30 years since we completed a training course to obtain our boat licences. We originally planned to bu y a boat and incorporate boating into our lives, but various life events delayed those plans.

Now that we own a boat, we realised that while our licences were still valid, our confidence and knowledge were not as up to date as they should be for safe boating.

We reached out to Karla of Nautical Training & Marine Services because we didn’t want to be the kind of people with a nice boat who are a hazard to themselves and others.

WHERE WAS THE TRAINING CONDUCTED?

Southport, Gold Coast. We live in Far North Queensland but wanted high-quality training in waters where crocodile risk wasn’t a constant concern. After thorough research, we decided to transport our boat nearly 2,000 km south to the Gold Coast to train with Karla.

WHAT IS THE BRAND AND MODEL OF YOUR BOAT?

We have a Microcat Sidewinder 5.0, an aluminium boat with twin hulls, side consoles, and a 100hp Honda outboard. It may not b e the prettiest boat, but

we love its stability and versatility—it’s like a 4WD on the water The large flat deck offers ample space for passengers and gear. Our ultimate goal is to take it touring and camp on the spacious front deck.

WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE TRAINING?

Training with Karla in our own boat was invaluable. She assessed our gear and skills while coaching us through techniques tailored specifically to our needs. Her approach was thorough and systematic, covering trip planning, navigation, safety, docking, and gear setup.

Some of the material refreshed what we already knew, while other techniques—like using spring lines for safe docking—were completely new to us.

We particularly enjoyed Day 2, when we applied our new skills on a day trip to Tipplers, a journey we had dreamed about for over 30 years.

WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU OVERCOME DURING TRAINING?

Our biggest challenge was confidence. It was reassuring to address our uncertainties headon, with Karla available to answer questions, demonstrate techniques, and correct any mistakes in real time. By the end of the training, we felt competent and assured in our abilities.

The confidence boost was so significant that the following day, we took Kim’s octogenarian parents back to Tipplers for a fantastic family outing.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE TRAINING?

We firmly believe that hands-on coaching, using the correct equipment in real situations, is irreplaceable. Karla’s methodical, practical instruction was excellent. We now see her as an ongoing resource for improving our boating skills and will definitely reach out for future training updates and refreshers.

WHITTLEY MARINE GROUP

Unveils Groundbreaking Walk-Through Windscreen Concept

WALK-THROUGH

Whittley Marine Group, Australia’s largest fibreglass trailer boat builder, has released teaser images of an industry-first trailer boat model featuring an innovative walk-through side windscreen, known as the Whittley “Mid Saloon Walk-Through” concept.

The design removes traditional walk-around side decks, increasing usable space inside the saloon cockpit. This allows access to the front deck via the mid-cabin saloon—previously seen only on larger vessels. The new layout seamlessly connects the rear cockpit, saloon, and foredeck, maximising space and accessibility.

A GAME-CHANGING DESIGN

Alan Whittley, director of sales and marketing, highlighted the concept’s uniqueness:

"No other local or imported trailer boat brand has developed this design. It provides noticeable extra space and safety, offering a big in-water boat feel without the high mooring costs. This innovation redefines live-aboard trailer boating."

Developed over two years with global engineering input, the concept features easily accessible steps leading to the opening windscreen, creating a companionway on the port side. This breakthrough

eliminates the need for side decks while maintaining a legal towing width under 2.5 metres for Australian roads.

Whittley noted that the design originated from customer feedback:

"Owners found traditional side decks inconvenient. By removing them, we unlocked additional space inside the rear saloon while staying within legal towing limits. We've also raised the floor height for uninterrupted views. Using VR technology, I’ve experienced the model first-hand—it feels like a much larger boat."

INNOVATIVE FEATURES & CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY

Although the full model details are yet to be revealed, Whittley’s Design Studio has shared key features:

• Lockable sliding cabin door mid-ship

• Outboard power (single or twin-engine)

• Brunswick E-Fathom power system

• Seakeeper Ride trim tab system

• Full-length sunroof—electrically controlled, enhancing ventilation and protection

• Improved side window airflow for docking convenience

BOOK A VR TOUR

Describ ing the model as Australia’s most advanced fibreglass trailer boat, Whittley emphasised its lithium battery system which eliminates the need for generators, and its spacious rear area is optimised for an outboard-only design.

"This boat integrates cutting-edge technology to enhance the boating experience, setting a new industry standard for maxi-trailer boats."

EXCLUSIVE VR DEALERSHIP EXPERIENCE & PRE-ORDERS OPEN

Whittley Marine Group will soon launch a New Model VR in Dealership Experience, allowing customers to explore the boat in virtual reality at factory-owned dealerships across Australia.

"This industry-first experience allows customers to move through the n ew model in real time. We’ve already pre-sold the first three production builds, so now is the time to secure your slot for summer!"

For more details or to book a VR tour, call 03 8339 1800 or visit Whittley dealerships in Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, Newcastle, and the Gold Coast. More updates on the CR model will follow soon.

FLY TO SANCTUARY COVE BOAT SHOW DIRECT FROM MAIN BEACH HELIPORT

Thinking of an alternative way to get to the boat show in May? Why don’t you and your friends just FLY to the boat show? Gold Coast Helitours offer direct helicopter shuttle flights from their new terminal at the heart of Main Beach to Sanctuary Cove. Ideal for corporate attendees or just fun-seekers looking for a stress-free way to visit the premier boating event. Your transfer to and from the boat show will take just 6 minutes each way at an altitude of 1000-1500 feet.

Gold Coast Helitours operate several large helicopters that can transport up to 6 passengers, and smaller ones for up to 3 passengers. With a crew of experienced pilots and ground staff operating the fleet of luxury helicopters, the company will be assisting up to 400 return passengers every day of the event.

There is always ample parking available at Marina Mirage and Mariners Cove. Just follow the Mariners Cove Marina high-side jetty to the awesome floating Heliport Passenger Terminal, the only floating heliport in Australia, and one of the most high-tech TSA-compliant airports in the world.

Upon arrival, you will be automatically weighed while you self check-in using an iPad terminal. After a 4-minute video briefing, you will immediately depart for Sanctuary Cove and begin enjoying the view from above. The helicopter flight takes a direct path over the western channel of the Broadwater, above Harbour Town, over Hope Island and onto Sanctuary Cove.

Although there is no need to book and usually no waiting, a booking is strongly advised to avoid being separated from friends on the flight. The Sanctuary Cove helicopter pad is directly outside the Pavilion entrance. A return booking, with estimated time, will ensure an aircraft is immediately available. It is ok to carry your boat show purchases onboard, but it will definitely not be possible to carry your new boat on the helicopter!

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s (AMSA) new CEO, Ms Kaylene Dale, made a new Marine Order 504 on 14 November 2024.

The new Marine Order 504 enters into force on 1 June 2025. Marine Order 504 has legal effect and applies to all Domestic Commercial Vessels regulated by AMSA under the Marine Safety (Domestic Commercial Vessel) National Law Act 2012 (the National Law). That means almost every commercial vessel in Australia will be bound to comply with the new marine order in about 3 months’ time.

HOW WAS MARINE ORDER 504 MADE?

AMSA engaged in a consultation process from 28 May 2024 through 28 July 2024, a period of eight and a half weeks. AMSA developed a ‘consultation hub’ on their website which included the draft MO504 instrument, a summary of the proposed changes, the regulatory costings analysis and a timeline of the key dates. The consultation hub was viewed over 20,000 times throughout the course of the consultation.

The consultation was promoted through the following channels:

• a news item on the AMSA website

• an article in the ‘AMSA Update’ newsletter which has over 20,000 subscribers

• over 50,000 direct emails sent to stakeholders within the DCV industry

• organic and paid social media posts on Facebook and LinkedIn which were viewed over 1 million times.

AMSA received a total of 109 submissions during the consultation period - 97 were received via the online submission form, 12 were received via email. Most submissions received were from DCV owners, operators, masters and crew (approx. 75%). The remaining submissions

were received from National and State industry associations (approx. 13%), other maritime professionals (approx. 9%) and State and Federal government agencies (approx. 3%).

Approximately half of the submissions focused on the hours of rest proposal, which is described further below.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHANGES TO MARINE ORDER 504?

Perhaps the most useful change is the simplified Safety Management System (SMS) requirement for smaller, less complex vessels and operations. The new definition for a ‘lower complexity vessel’ applies to:

1. Vessels less than 7.5m in length,

2. For class 2 DCV’s (<12 passengers) that have no more than 4 day passengers,

3. The vessel doesn’t carry dangerous goods,

4. The vessel doesn’t have equipment that could negatively affect stability (net reels, cranes and similar), and

5. The vessel is not used for towage, amongst other criteria.

For such ‘lower complexity vessels’, the ‘risk assessment’ does not require a consideration of the daily tasks to be performed by the master and all crew, and also does not require a consideration of stability. Many DCV owners that fit the requirements of a ‘lower complexity vessel’ will no doubt welcome this development, making marine safety compliance a little less onerous.

Aside from this modest improvement, further changes include:

• clarifying and strengthening fatigue management (more on which below)

• enhancing the management of risks from drug and alcohol use, which means a requirement for a drug & alcohol policy

• ensuring that roles and responsibilities for the safe operation of the vessel are clear

• updating the assembly station requirements in the vessel’s emergency plan

• aligning procedures for onboard operations and emergency preparedness with risk

• addressing operational risks to vessel stability

• amending the certificate of operation renewal criteria to reduce administrative burden.

THE CONTROVERSIAL HOURS OF REST PROPOSAL

Perhaps the most controversial issue is the fatigue management rules. AMSA describes the feedback as follows:

The feedback on the proposal was mixed, with strong support received from seafarers from certain sectors such as towage, oil and gas and offshore construction, and strong opposition from other sectors including some members of the fishing industry.

Regulation 8 (4) MO504 requires a vessel to have sufficient crew such that “the master and each crew member to have at least 10 hours rest in each 24 hour period.” This requirement resembles the international rules that apply to international seafarers (the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers), which requires similar hours of work and rest balance, but it is not a positive obligation that the master and crew must have 10 hours rest. The AMSA proposal for the new MO504 was to make the 10 hours of rest mandatory. It is hardly surprising that many sectors of the Australian Commercial Marine Industry found that proposal controversial, especially in commercial fishing. The implications for crewing, costs and compliance in smaller vessels are immediately obvious.

AMSA haven’t given up on the proposal, saying that “AMSA will now further consider the feedback received on the hours of rest proposal to inform future policy decisions. However, no changes to hours of rest will be made as part of this review process.”

CONCLUSION - The new MO504 might be viewed as evolution rather than revolution. The simplified SMS procedure for lower complexity vessels is a welcome development, and owners of such vessels should review their SMS accordingly. The controversial hours of rest proposal has not progressed at this time, but it is expected to resurface in a future review of Marine Order 504.

If in doubt about MO504 and how it applies to you and your DCV, call your local friendly maritime lawyers.

GRAND G750 INFLATABLE

The Grand G750 – the second largest model in the Grand Boats leisure range – is much more than a typical rigid inflatable boat.(RIB) At 7.5 metres, this vessel has been designed to cater to every adventure, all while elevating your on-water experience. Perfectly blending practicality, family functionality, style and comfort, the G750 easily satisfies the keen fishers, the water sports enthusiasts, and the family cruisers alike.

The European-made RIB has a centre console layout and an internal beam of 1.7 metres, offering ample space to walk around onboard. Finished with an aerodynamic fibreglass t-top, waterski tower, large swimming platforms and tube-mounted bow rails, the G750 ensures comfort, sun-protection and stability no matter where you’re situated onboard. The console’s tall windshield provides protection from wind and spray. However with Grand’s advance spray-deflecting tube technology, the G750 provides a completely dry ride for all passengers onboard even in challenging, choppy offshore conditions.

The durable UV-resistant ORCA Hypalon tubes combine with a deep V fibreglass hull with long chines and considerable deadrise, making for a high-performance ride that is both thrilling while also incredibly quiet and stable. Many liken cruising onboard the G750 to an experience of “floating”

above the water – as if riding on a hydrofoil – thanks to how cleanly this boat slices through chop and swell.

Powered by a Yamaha 250HP outboard, the G750 has a top speed of 46 knots, but cruises most efficiently at 30 knots. Underfloor is a 260L fuel tank, as well as a 75L freshwater tank and 75L holding tank, all wellpositioned and balanced throughout the hull.

On deck, passengers feel comfort underfoot with the mocha SeaDek flooring, which nicely complements the two-tone UV-resistant Spradling upholstery. For the ultimate social and entertainment experience, passengers can stretch out on the large bow sunbed or enjoy a meal sat around the stern wrap-around U seating, which comfortably seats 5 – 6 people.

The inclusion of an electric anchor, aft deck shower, onboard toilet, fridge-freezer, and tap and sink all further enhance the comfort onboard; as do the six in-built Fusion speakers, which create an incredibly high-quality, surround-sound experience no matter where you are seated onboard.

At the helm, pivoting bolster seats enable the driver to sit or stand behind the tall windscreen at the boat’s dash. This large fibreglass console has space for two large chart plotters, as well as a Scanstrut Wireless Phone Charger and stereo system.

With all of these features crafted within an angular, sleek and refined looking boat, the Grand G750 goes beyond being solely suitable for cruising. This sophisticated RIB is a craft for those who value exceptional seakeeping, thrilling performance, detailed design and the versatility to enjoy all kinds of water sports and activities while on the water.

The Grand G750 and other models in the Grand range will be available to view at Sanctuary Cove Boat Show 2025, or at the brand’s showroom in Arundel.

AANCHORED RIGHT QUALITY AUSSIE PRODUCTS

nchor Right and Bar Crusher Boats have enjoyed a mutually beneficial business relationship for over 20 years. Ever since Rex Francis, founder of Anchor Right, and Peter Cleland, co-founder of Bar Crusher Boats, met at a boat show over two decades ago.

Peter was at the show not only to promote his boats but also to find a high quality, strong, highly effective anchor to suit the boats his company was building.

Rex reminisces, “Peter was motivated to check out other anchors at that boat show because he hadn’t found anything satisfactory at that stage to hold for Westernport Bay where they were filming to advertise their boats.” Of course, Rex was at the show to promote his business and he offered Peter a couple of his anchors to try out.

Peter points out that his company did its due diligence, trying a variety of other sizes and types of anchors, before deciding on Anchor Right. He was so impressed with their performance that his company placed an order – and have stuck with Anchor Right ever since. Thus began a business relationship and personal friendship that lasts until this day.

“Every boat that leaves the Bar Crusher factory has a SARCA anchor mounted on its nose,” says Peter.

Peter has actually dived to the seabed to observe closely how the anchors set and has been impressed that they work as intended and advertised.

Apart from the strong build and highly effective operation of Rex’s SARCA anchors, Peter likes the way that the anchors fit snugly to the bowsprit – not flopping around like some anchors on the market – and there was no danger of them coming loose when the boat was being trailered down a highway.

Recently, Rex and Peter met to reminisce about getting their businesses off the ground – or perhaps, more appropriately, on the water – and their common interests of boating and fishing.

As they chatted, the topic of anchoring in Western Port Bay, Victoria, arose. Peter recalls that, in the early days of Bar Crusher Boats, they wanted to take promotional photos in the bay and needed the boats to be securely anchored in a variety of locations. But the anchors being used at the time were not fit for purpose. The seabed in the bay with its areas of reef, gravel or weed meant that, at the time, no single anchor would work under all conditions.

Rex was reminded of when he would take his family fishing at Corner Inlet, north of Wilsons Promontory, which needs three older style anchors for the different conditions – a plough, reef and a sand anchor –depending on where you decide to stop and drop a line.

He also recalls, with some horror, when he was using a wire anchor off Rabbit Island in Bass Strait – he was

advised to use a wire anchor because a different type “might get stuck and you’ll never get it back”. Rex says, “The wind got up and the waves got up, and the anchor failed.” The boat, with family on board, was heading for the rocks and Rex was lucky to pull them out in time.

Afterwards he thought, “What’s more important –retrieving an anchor, or preserving our lives?”

Those types of experiences inspired Rex to design and build a better anchor. He says that, although no product is going to work in all conditions, Anchor Right goes a long way further towards achieving that goal than other anchors on the market.

Rex says that the average boatie is often unaware or unsure of how best to deploy, set, and eventually retrieve their anchors – compounding the problems presented if a lesser quality or improperly engineered product is being used.

In the interests of boating safety, Anchor Right endeavoured to get word out to the boating community on correct anchoring techniques. The Water Police and Coast Guard came on board, adding information on anchor rope ratios and printing educational booklets (from which Anchor Right benefitted indirectly as their products appeared!). So, word spread, boaties became better informed and quality products were used properly.

Peter believes the Bar Crusher name “captures the vibe of hardcore, passionate anglers who want to get out there offshore and have a good go.” And Anchor Right has the products to help keep them safe.

Rex and Peter agree that mutual support of Australian companies for each other helps ensure the survival and success of Australian jobs and businesses – a far better result than importing cheaper, often inferior quality overseas products.

www.anchorright.com.au

The SARCA anchor has great aesthetics and will enhance the bow. Used on all Bar Crusher boats.

“We will fit as many boats in as we can in the space,” said Neil Webster, Sirocco Marine Managing Director. “We will have a large range of BRIG boats across the popular models: 6, 6.7, 8 and 10m which are the most versatile and in demand. Also on show, the all-new Navigator range from BRIG – the Navigator 22, 24 and 26.”

At the top end, the BRIG Eagle 10 is always a headturner at every boat show. At 10.2-metres, it’s powered by twin 300hp engines and boasts a top speed of 50 knots, and with an array of features that make it the most versatile and best value day boat and weekender on the market.

Its deep-V-hull ensures a smooth, dry ride. It’s more stable, lightweight and low-maintenance than its hardsided counterparts, and with room for up to 16 people, it has a capacity double a 10-metre fib reglass boat.

Features include comfortable seats, a convertible table and sun deck, sink unit that can accommodate a fridge/stove, stern swim platform with folding ladder and outdoor shower kit, plus a well-appointed cabin with double bed.

Due to the ongoing conflict overseas, BRIG - the world's leading brand of RIBs - briefly suspended trade to ensure the safety of their workforce. BRIG returned to production in 2023.

Sirocco Marine is the largest RIB dealer network in Australia and has been the exclusive Australian distributor for BRIG since 22006. They have been awarded BRIG International Dealer of the Year for five consecutive years.

Zodiac boats will share the limelight with BRIG on the Sirocco Marine display at SCIBS 2025, showcasing the popular Medline range in the 6.8, 7.5 and 9m models.

“Zodiac is renowned as the pioneer in RIBs, since the 1930s,” Webster stated. “Visitors to SCIBS are going to love the larger models, particularly the Medline 9, which is a real ‘private oasis’ – both luxurious and extremely practical.”

At 9-metres with a 3-metre beam, the Medline 9 is the largest in the Zodiac range.

A ver satile centre console RIB, it features two large relaxation areas – a double bow and rear U-shaped lounge aft, convertible to a sundeck space – plus a sleeping cabin with porthole windows, integrated kitchen, plenty of storage compartments, and bathing platform with deck shower and telescopic boarding ladder for safe and easy access to the water.

Rated for up to 20 people, the Medline 9 offers a myriad of options and accessories to customise your vessel to suit your requirements: diving, fishing, watersports, island hopping and safe family boating.

Powered by twin 350hp engines, the Medline 9 reaches a thrilling top speed of 55 knots.

Sirocco Marine will also exhibit the full range of Sirocco brand RIBs, including the new Sirocco V6, which replaces the V580, and the V650. The range of Sirocco alloy RIB tenders has been expanded to include new models: A300Q, A300L and A390Q.

Sirocco dealers from all over the country will be on hand at SCIBS 2025 to provide expert product information and customer support.

Cutting edge design with pedigree DNA

TThe Boat Works

ELEVATING MARINE SERVICES FOR THE FUTURE

he Boat Works on the Gold Coast has become one of the world’s leading marine facilities, thanks to ongoing investment in cutting-edge infrastructure. As Australia’s largest, cleanest, and most environmentally friendly yacht refit and maintenance centre, it spans 55 acres and hosts over 1,000 skilled marine professionals, making it the region’s largest commercial marine precinct.

Entering a new era of service, The Boat Works has launched the innovative Watersheds facility, dedicated to in-water refit solutions. This new precinct offers covered berthing for nine 35-metre motor yachts in two 100-metre-long covered chutes—an Australian-first concept and unique in the Southern Hemisphere. These protected berths enhance capacity for larger vessel maintenance while ensuring marine professionals can work shielded from the elements.

Each chute is equipped with extra-wide pontoons, highvoltage power, crane access, refuelling, and provisioning, providing optimal conditions for efficient, high-quality refit work. This controlled environment allows captains, owners, and project managers to meet tight deadlines with exceptional results.

With over 1,000 marine tradespeople and 90 businesses on-site, The Boat Works delivers unmatched expertise, reinforcing its position as the premier yacht maintenance destination in the region.

“The new services take The Boat Works to the next level,” said Tony Longhurst, owner of The Boat Works. “It’s like

nothing else in the Southern Hemisphere, matching the most advanced facilities in the US and Europe. The demand is here, and this development attracts the world’s superyacht fleet while supporting our skilled marine trades. Small businesses are thriving, expanding, and hiring more people.”

INDUSTRY-LEADING EFFICIENCY

Chapman Yacht Management recently utilised the new Watersheds for their 100-foot Oceanfast charter vessel, SEA RAES, following a four-month refit. With just ten days before returning to Sydney for peak season, the team exceeded expectations, thanks to the facility’s efficiency.

The covered chutes enabled the crew to complete crucial seawater system checks and final touches ahead of schedule. The controlled environment also allowed exterior trades to accelerate their work, reducing the timeline by up to three weeks.

“This venue is a game-changer, significantly boosting efficiency and turnaround times without compromising quality,” said Cooper Chapman, director of Chapman Yacht Management.

Similarly, Captain Mark Clacher, at the helm of the 41-metre BATAVIA, found the Watersheds invaluable for maintenance and bunkering operations.

“With rain that morning, the undercover space made all the difference, making the process smoother and safer,” he said. “The fuel truck driver even commented on how much easier it was. Plus, we could take on supplies directly at the berth, a huge convenience. This facility is a game-changer, whether for the hot summer sun or winter winds.”

The 110-foot PLEIADES II has made multiple visits to The Boat Works, with its latest stop involving a stay in the new in-water sheds.

Captain Ross Heginbotham noted that the covered chutes dramatically improved productivity. “The washdown and ceramic coating processes will be much easier in this controlled environment. Shade and shelter from the weather are a welcome relief, especially in the Australian summer.”

MAJOR REFIT PROJECTS & ECONOMIC GROWTH

Now berthed at The Boat Works, the 50-metre former Australian Navy ship JeMaSa has entered the Watersheds for an extensive refit. The steel-hulled vessel’s transformation will generate significant employment, securing between 50 and 100 jobs over the next six months.

CEO of Superyacht Australia, David Good, praised the expansion; “The demand for berths and refit facilities is already here. The Boat Works is aligning with the updated Queensland Superyacht Strategy, which extends to 2028 and forecasts a 90% growth in the Australian superyacht sector. This investment ensures Queensland is recognised as a major superyacht hub in the Asia-Pacific region.”

Suzanne Davies, CEO of the Marina Industries Association, also commended The Boat Works’ commitment to leading-edge infrastructure.“It is both a 5-Gold Anchor and Superyacht Ready accredited marina, known for its environmental best practices. Its infrastructure provides positive environmental outcomes and serves as a model for other marina and boatyard operators worldwide.”

The Boat Works continues to lead the way in marine innovation, reinforcing its status as the premier destination for yacht refits and maintenance in the Southern Hemisphere. www. theboatworks.com.au

WHY HAS SWIFTCO ALUMINIUM TRAILERS BEEN SUCH A SUCCESS STORY ?

ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE

Swiftco aluminium trailers are the result of collaboration with an in-house engineer whose extensive background includes aerospace engineering and finite element analysis consulting for industry leaders such as Boeing, Airbus, Northrop, and UTC Aerospace.

Constructed with T6 structural aluminium, these trailers boast an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and superior corrosion resistance. Swiftco's T6 aluminium undergoes a specialised treatment and ageing process to achieve extreme mechanical strength and durability. The result is a material that combines lightweight properties with extreme durability, making it ideal for applications where strength and longevity are critical. Unlike rolled aluminium, which is often used in lower-quality trailers, T6 aluminium cannot be rolled or bent without compromising its structural integrity. This is why Swiftco's trailers maintain superior strength compared to competitors that use inferior rolled aluminium with lower loadbearing capabilities. Swiftco is the safe choice for your prized boat for enhanced performance at the boat ramp and reliability and safety for your family while towing.

AEROSPACE-INSPIRED COMPOSITE JOINT DESIGN

Swiftco Trailers incorporate composite joint technology inspired by aerospace design principles, offering unparalleled strength and safety. Rigorous laboratory testing has confirmed that each composite joint can handle loads exceeding 4000kg, giving the trailer a total load capacity of 8000kg. This performance significantly exceeds the 2250kg require ment outlined

in Australian Design Rules, delivering a level of safety and durability unmatched in the industry.

AFFORDABLE, MANUFACTURER-DIRECT PRICING

All trailers are designed, engineered, and manufactured entirely on the Gold Coast by Swiftco and are certified under the Australian Federal Road Vehicle Standards Legislation. Swiftco's direct-to-consumer business model eliminates the costs associated with dealer networks, allowing customers to access superior-quality trailers at competitive prices.

By purchasing directly from the manufacturer, customers benefit from industry-leading engineering without the inflated costs, making Swiftco trailers both high-performance and affordable.

THE SWIFTCO ADVANTAGE

The combination of innovative engineering, highstrength T6 aluminium, aerospace-inspired design, and competitive pricing, has established Swiftco aluminium trailers as an industry leader. It's why Swiftco can offer an industry leading 6-year frame warranty. With exceptional durability, unmatched load capacity, and a focus on affordability, Swiftco continues to set new benchmarks for quality and performance in the trailer market. It's understandably why Swiftco Trailers have been awarded the winner of the Most Innovative Trailer Company in the Australian Enterprise Awards for the past two years.

ZHIK KITS OUT AUSTRALIA'S OLYMPIC SAILORS

When Australia’s Olympic sailors take to the waters, they'll wear the industry’s first high-performance, neoprene-free wetsuits created by Sydney sailing apparel company, Zhik.

Made from sustainable, plant-based Yulex® rubber, the range sets a new standard for elite eco-friendly water sports apparel with superior thermal insulation, comfort and durability, all while generating 80 percent fewer CO2 emissions than conventional neoprene wetsuits The fabric is infused with graphene, an advanced nanoscale 2D material that can return up to 20 percent more body heat, keeping wearers warmer for longer, regulating temperatures during low-intensity activities and aiding the drying process. Along with the highperformance wetsuits, Zhik will supply all technical on-water kit needed to succeed across eight sailing disciplines contested by Australians.

Zhik CEO, sailing champion, and multiple Olympic gold medallist Mat Belcher OAM, said the company was thrilled to be named an official supplier for the Australian Olympic Team for the second Games in a row. “Zhik was first named an Olympic supplier for the Australian sailing team for the Tokyo Games in 2020. That year, Will Ryan and I won gold wearing Zhik gear,” he said. “Since then, it’s evolved even more, and the current range sets a new standard for elite ecoconscious water sports attire.”

New sailing events will include iQFoil and kiteboarding for the first time in Olympic history. Australian Olympic Committee CEO Matt Carroll said both disciplines require equipment with peak durability. “Olympians are competing at the highest level and cannot compromise on performance, but the AOC is also deeply committed to partnering with suppliers that care about environmental impact,” he said. "Our challenge was to find a kit that ticked both boxes, and we've been able to do that with Zhik. It’s a bonus that this innovative gear is cutting edge Australian technology too.”

Zhik was created in the Sydney garage of Brian Connolly, the founder of Lake Technology which became Dolby Australia. Connolly, a sailing enthusiast,

At the annual Motor Boat Awards, hosted by Motor Boat & Yachting, the Axopar 29 was judged by industry experts who extensively tested and evaluated the latest models on the market.

Hugo Andreae, awards chairman, praised Axopar for successfully evolving the much-loved Axopar 28, stating, “Replacing a boat as popular and iconic as the Axopar 28 is fraught with danger, but Axopar has negotiated that tightrope with consummate skill. The new 29 does everything the old 28 did, only better.”

With a redesigned bow for a drier ride, increased storage, a multi-cabin under the helm, and improved social spaces, the Axopar 29 delivers more capability, comfort, and adventure-ready performance than ever before.

AXOPAR 29 XC CROSS CABIN: THE ULTIMATE ALL-WEATHER PERFORMER

Meanwhile, the Axopar 29 XC Cross Cabin was crowned ‘Up to 10m’ Winner at the European Powerboat of the Year Awards. Recognised as one of the most prestigious accolades in the marine industry, these awards are judged by an independent panel of leading European marine journalists.

Designed for year-round adventure, the Axopar 29 XC stood out for its exceptional rough-water performance, easy handling, and versatility—key factors in this competitive category. The jury highlighted its ability

to deliver safety, practicality, and fun in a compact yet spacious package, making it ideal for both experienced boaters and those new to the water.

Axopar founding partner, Jan-Erik Viitala, expressed his gratitude and vision for the range, “With the third generation of Axopar, we’ve remained true to our core DNA of creating boats that are easy to handle, accessible for everyone, and fun to drive. Whether you’re an experienced boater or a first-time owner, the Axopar 29 will cater to your needs and take care of you.”

NEW BENCHMARK FOR THE AUSTRALIAN MARKET

The success of the Axopar 29 range further cements Axopar’s status as a leader in offshore adventure boating—something that Eyachts, the exclusive Australian and New Zealand dealer for Axopar, has seen firsthand.

Peter Hrones, managing director of Eyachts, expressed his excitement about the award-winning range, stating, “We brought the first Axopar 28 to Australia in 2015 and it is incredible to see how the brand has evolved since then. The Axopar 29 is setting a new standard for Australian and New Zealand waters. With its offshore capability, efficiency, and inc redible versatility, it’s the perfect boat for all boaters looking for adventure. These awards are a

testament to Axopar’s ability to innovate and push the bound aries of modern boating.”

GBOATIES 25 YEARS AT THE SERVICE OF

old Coast City Marina & Shipyard is the iconic shipyard that, 25 years ago, boldly changed the face of Australia’s marine industry by adopting a ‘onestop shop’ approach to refit and repair for vessels of every shape and size.

“IF

YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME”

Well come they did, in droves. GCCM was a game changer infrastructure for Australia and the South Pacific region and unquestionably bolstered the Gold Coast’s status as Australia’s marine capital. The facility was rapidly embraced by the industry as boaties from the Gold Coast and right along the east coast of Australia tuned into the convenience of being able to undertake refit and repair in one clean, expansive and professionally managed location.

Twenty-five years on from its opening in 2000, GCCM is the most experienced and awarded shipyard in Australia. The internationally RE-accredited 5 Gold Anchor marina plays home to Australia’s largest concentration of marine trades servicing vessel of all sizes from jet skis to superyachts.

The GCCM team have powerfully and persuasively promoted the Australian marine industry across the globe and developed an impressive range of international strategic alliances that have certainly helped propel both GCCM and the Australian yachting brand, into the global marketplace.

Today GCCM plays home to more than 90 individual leading marine businesses employing over 700 contractors. Whilst their reputation as a Superyacht hub has flourished, the marine team of staff and onsite contractors constantly aim to ensure that they roll out the welcome mat for vessels of every shape and size to come and enjoy the seamless repair and refit services, whether you have a 10-foot tinnie, a sailing boat or a 200-foot superyacht.

GCCM INSTRUMENTAL IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COOMERA MARINE PRECINCT

GCCM chair and patriarch, Pat Gay, reflects on how GCCM came to be. It was the 80’s and Pat had been appointed as co-chairman of the Gold Coast Waterways Authority, formed to construct the Gold Coast Seaway. The GCWA quickly realised that the land on the spit was too valuable for commercial marine works, so a new more viable location or precinct needed to be found. It was then that the industry body earmarked a portion of farming land in the middle of Coomera. At that time the now thriving growth corridor, was undeniably considered the back blocks of the Gold Coast.

Pat set about the planning and construction of GCCM in collaboration with a renowned boating family, the LeighSmiths, who had a wealth of experience in managing marinas on the Gold Coast.

Pat says their original intention was to be the “biggest and best marina and shipyard in Australia” something which was achieved in GCCM’s first year of operation.

“I am very proud of GCCM and the many awards we’ve received but more importantly I am enormously proud of the opportunities that have been created here for so many businesses and families over the years. It really is a community, and we’ve been able to bring together some of the smartest minds and most talented craftsmen in the Australian marine industry. It’s been rewarding to watch the eco-system continue to grow, strengthen and thrive."

Chief operating officer, Andrew Chapman CMM, says “the secret to the longevity at GCCM is the incredible team that operate the marina & shipyard. The customer focus and can-do attitude of the team demonstrates the pride that has evolved over time. With the majority of the key team members being long term at GCCM, it's inevitable that relationships have been built between customers and our team, and we look to build on that for many years to come.”

GCCM continues to go from strength to strength and is set to double in size with the development of an adjacent 20-hectare site that will further cater for burgeoning growth in the marine industry.

Participating in Project Aimed at Widespread Adoption of Sustainable Fuel

TRIAL BEGINS FOR SUSTAINABLE MARINE FUEL

Suzuki Motor Corporation has joined a project designed to promote the widespread use of sustainable fuel in recreational boating. The initiative, led by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), seeks to advance the adoption of sustainable fuels as part of efforts to decarbonise the recreational boating industry.

Suzuki Marine Technical Centre USA, located in Florida, has initiated a trial introduction of Hyperfuels PurFuels™, a sustainable fuel for marine use that contributes to CO2 reduction. PurFuels™ is a "drop-in" fuel, meaning it can be used in all existing gasoline outboard engines without any special modifications. It is produced by refining cooking oil waste, plant-based materials, and other sustainable sources. This specific formulation of PurFuels™ reduces CO2 emissions by 30% more than traditional E10 (ethanol-blended) fuels, with the same renewable content. Incorporating Hyperfuels PurFuels™ into daily operations at the Technical Centre as part of its ongoing commitment to reducing CO2 emissions. Additionally, in collaboration with NMMA and local stakeholders, Suzuki will take part in a project aimed at encouraging the use of sustainable fuels in marinas across the Florida Panhandle. The project will begin at a city-owned marina in Panama City, with plans for statewide expansion in the future.

Through this initiative, Suzuki Marine is contributing to the future of boating by supporting carbon neutrality and enriching the experience for customers around the world.

MAXIMISE PERFORMANCE WITH PROPSPEED ®

For boat owners, performance and protection go hand in hand. Whether you’ve recently invested in a new vessel or are maintaining your boat for the seasons ahead, keeping underwater assets in optimal condition is essential. Marine growth and corrosion can quickly impact efficiency and performance, increase fuel consumption, and lead to costly maintenance.

Since 1999, Propspeed® has set the standard in foul-release coatings, delivering proven protection for running gear and underwater metals. Tried and tested by hundreds of thousands of boat owners worldwide, including in Australia’s harsh marine environments, Propspeed consistently delivers the same resultimproved boat performance, lower fuel burn and operational costs, and sustained value of investment, all while keeping the vessel’s running gear operating and looking its best season after season.

At the core of their comprehensive product range is Propspeed, a foul-release coating system designed to prevent marine growth from bonding to underwater metals. The iconic gold coating improves efficiency, reduces fuel consumption, and minimises maintenance costs by protecting running gear from fouling and corrosion. LightspeedTM, endorsed by Lumishore, is a transparent foul-release coating designed to protect underwater lights and maintain their performance. FoulfreeTM, certified by AIRMAR, is a specialised coating

for transducers designed to keep them clear of marine growth, ensuring peak sonar clarity. The latest addition to the product line is StripspeedTM, a solvent-based paint stripper for underwater metals.

To elevate confidence, increase accessibility, and empower all marine businesses and boaters, Propspeed developed the Like A Pro™ Toolkit. The toolkit includes the Propspeed Coverage Calculator to eliminate the guesswork in determining how much product is needed for a given vessel. Stripspeed, selected as one of the Boating Industry’s Top Products for 2023, ensures an easier, faster and safer way of removing old foul-release coatings and prepping the surface for reapplication. The final part of the Like A Pro™ approach is the Propspeed Application Kit and a new application technique. The new application kit includes two paint trays, a roller handle, and two four-inch (10cm) Propspeed rollers, one for use with the Etching Primer base and one for use with the Clear Coat. The rollers accomplish a more consistent finish than brushing, whether done by a professional applicator or a DIYer. The new application technique is easy to learn and, when done properly, requires less time than the previous application technique.

In addition to enhancing vessel performance, lowering operational costs, and reducing emissions, Propspeed can also help protect underwater metals from corrosion and reduce the environmental impact of anode fallout. Corrosion on a vessel occurs when ions transfer from metal

running gear - such as shafts, rudders, props, and pod drives - into the ocean, leading to degradation over time.

An insulative coating like Propspeed, combined with a strong cathodic protection system, is very effective in preventing severe corrosion on all types of vessels. Propspeed’s Clear Coat acts as an excellent insulator, protecting the underwater metals and helps with preventing severe corrosion, while extending anode life and reducing anode fallout into the ocean.

In collaboration with Marine Protection Systems, Propspeed promotes best practices using its insulative foul-release coatings alongside Marine Protection Systems' expertise in cathodic protection and corrosion protection solutions. This partnership strives to reduce the costs of boat ownership and operation while minimising the environmental impact of corrosion and coating loss on our oceans.

For over two decades, Propspeed has helped boaters and marine professionals protect their investments. Looking ahead, Propspeed remains committed to addressing the industry’s evolving needs and bringing value to its partners and customers. Propspeed will be exhibiting at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show at PW23, connecting with industry professionals, celebrating its customers and partners, and showcasing tools for success.

IMPORTANCE OF BATTERIES IN MARINE BOATS

Operating a marine boat depends heavily on batteries for power and safety throughout their use on the water. Batteries start boat engines and power up the electrical system while providing essential emergency backup functionality. Marine batteries are built for purpose, so they can withstand the harsh marine environment of violent sea states. Their enhanced durability and efficiency are essential, especially when you are out at sea. Boat owners who understand the importance of marine batteries can make better choices in selection and maintenance while optimising their battery systems to improve marine adventures.

UNDERSTANDING THE TYPES OF MARINE BATTERIES

Like automotive vehicles, marine boats require specific battery types to meet their unique power needs. Below are three main categories:

1. STARTING BATTERIES: These batteries provide a powerful burst of energy required to start the marine engine. This is measured by a marine cranking amp (MCA). MCA is measured at 0 oC (freezing point of water) while cold cranking amp (CCA) is measured at -18 oC and used for land vehicles. A short high-current discharges and recharges as soon as the engine starts running.

2. DEEP CYCLE BATTERIES: Deep cycle batteries maintain consistent power delivery for longer durations, whereas starting batteries do not. Deep cycle batteries operate electrical equipment, including lights, GPS units, fish finders, and bilge pumps.

3. DUAL-PURPOSE BATTERIES: These batteries merge starting battery capabilities with deep-cycle battery characteristics to provide moderate engine starting power alongside a consistent electrical discharge for boat electronics.

FUNCTIONS OF MARINE BATTERIES

1. ENGINE START AND OPERATION: Starting the boat's engine is the main role of a marine battery. A dependable battery ensures steady engine ignition while protecting against failures that might trap boaters mid-voyage.

2. POWERING ONBOARD ELECTRONICS: Today's boats contain multiple electronic instruments, such as GPS systems and depth finders, radios, and navigation lights for proper operation. Deep-cycle batteries deliver consistent power to maintain the efficient operation of essential boat systems.

3. SAFETY AND EMERGENCY SYSTEMS: Marine batteries support safety equipment such as bilge pumps, emergency lighting, and communication systems. In the event of engine failure, a well-maintained battery can be lifesaving by powering distress signals and backup navigation systems.

4. ENHANCING COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE:

Recreational boaters rely heavily on their marine batteries powering various amenities like refrigerators, air conditioning, and entertainment systems. Enjoyment and comfort are essential on their boat trips.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT MARINE BATTERY

Selecting the appropriate marine battery depends on several factors:

BOAT SIZE AND POWER REQUIREMENTS: Larger boats with multiple electrical systems require high-capacity deep cycle or dual-purpose batteries.

BATTERY CHEMISTRY: Marine batteries are available in lead-acid, AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat), and lithium-ion variants.

DURABILITY AND MAINTENANCE: Sealed batteries like AGM and lithium-ion require less maintenance than traditional flooded lead-acid batteries. There are also sealed, maintenance-free lead-acid batteries that have been reliable power sources for decades.

MAINTENANCE TIPS FOR STARTING MARINE BATTERIES

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of marine batteries. Here are some essential tips:

REGULAR CHARGING: Avoid deep discharges by charging batteries when not in use.

CLEAN TERMINALS: Corrosion can affect performance, so clean terminals regularly and apply anti-corrosion grease.

CHECK WATER LEVELS: Maintain the recommended water level for flood accessible lead-acid batteries.

STORE PROPERLY: During the off-season, store batteries in a cool, dry place and keep them charged to prevent sulfation.

Ensuring your marine batteries come from a reputable brand like Supercharge provides the peace of mind needed to enjoy your marine adventures. Investing in high-quality marine batteries enhances efficiency and ensures safety and convenience on the water.

Greenline’s popularity grows amid rising Australian & New Zealand demand for hybrid propulsion

EYACHTS WINS GREENLINE DEALER OF THE YEAR

Eyachts, the exclusive distributor of Greenline Yachts in Australia and New Zealand, has been named Greenline Dealer of the Year and awarded Best Marketing & Content Creation at the prestigious Düsseldorf Boat Show. This global recognition comes as Greenline’s responsible yachting philosophy continues to gain momentum across the region, with Australians and Kiwis leading Greenline sales worldwide, making Eyachts the top-performing dealer.

The range of yachts sold includes Greenline 39s, 40s, 45s, and 48s, with deliveries across Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales, and Auckland, as well as overseas handovers in Slovenia and even the USA, where an Australian couple plans to cruise the Great Loop.

RESPONSIBLE YACHTING ON THE RISE

The rapid adoption of Greenline Yachts reflects Kiwis' and Australians' growing interest in hybrid propulsion and responsible yachting. According to Peter Hrones, managing director of Eyachts, this shift aligns with Greenline’s vision of delivering yachts that blend innovation with efficiency. “Greenline’s philosophy resonates deeply with Australian and New Zealand buyers. Many of our Greenline owners are experienced boaties who now prioritise shelter from the sun, stability on the ocean, and easy one-level living,” said Hrones. “The ability to cruise quietly using hybrid propulsion and solar power is a game-changer for those who want an effortless and enjoyable experience on the water.”

WHY EYACHTS WON GREENLINE DEALER OF THE YEAR

According to Alessandro Lorenzon from Greenline, Eyachts’ success comes down to its dedication to both sales and brand-building.

“Receiving two awards in the same year is an outstanding result. Thanks to Eyachts’ sales push and expertise, they ranked #1 for orders received in 2024 globally. This shows how well they have communicated Greenline’s philosophy, quality, and unique selling points to their customers.

“In addition, Eyachts produced the most original content— from walkthroughs to blog posts to owner interviews— actively contributing to our brand value and awareness.”

THE GREENLINE DIFFERENCE

Greenline Yachts stand out for their combination of hybrid propulsion, solar energy systems, and smart design, making them ideal for modern, responsible boating enthusiasts.

KEY FEATURES THAT RESONATE WITH OWNERS

● One-Level Living – Seamless indoor-outdoor spaces, ideal for easy movement onboard.

● Solar Power Revolution – Advanced solar and battery systems provide silent, self-sufficient cruising.

● Stability at Sea – A low centre-of-gravity hull improves efficiency, manoeuvrability, and comfort.

EUROPEAN

DELIVERY GROWING IN POPULARITY

More Australians are embracing the idea of a European delivery, allowing them to cruise the Adriatic and Mediterranean in the comfort of their own Greenline before Eyachts facilitates the journey home to Australia.

GREENLINE’S SIXTH-GENERATION

HYBRID PROPULSION

As the only yacht manufacturer offering a full fleet with hybrid propulsion, Greenline continues to lead the way in innovation. Their hybrid system combines the benefits of electric motors for silent cruising with diesel engines for longer voyages.

● Lower operating costs & reduced carbon footprint

● Silent, emission-free propulsion in eco-sensitive areas

● Solar-powered onboard systems for reduced noise & vibration

● Increased resale value as demand for hybrid solutions rises LOOKING AHEAD

With responsible yachting gaining traction, Eyachts is leading the shift towards eco-conscious luxury on the water.

Their success in bringing Greenline Yachts to Australia & New Zealand highlights the region’s growing demand for smarter, cleaner, and more efficient ways to explore the ocean.

TRedland City Marina The Allure of Living Afloat

here’s a romance to life at sea. The salty ocean breeze whispering through the rigging, the endless horizon stretching into the unknown and the rise and fall of the waves—all of which contribute to a hypnotic siren song that calls those who seek more than just the ordinary.

Redland City Marina is more than just a place to recoup—it’s a gathering point for wanderers, and a hub for those who crave the untamed freedom of the sea. This shift has never been more evident as we witness a growing movement—more and more people are casting off the lines of conventional living and embracing life afloat and swapping landlocked routines for a life of exploration.

At the marina, we have a front-row seat to this transformation. For us, it’s an incredible privilege to stand at the heart of these journeys, providing a place where preparations are made, friendships are forged, and adventures begin.

So what’s behind the growing appeal of life on the water, and why do we in the marine community call it The Dream? At Redland City Marina, we wanted to dive deeper into this lifestyle shift, so we spoke with past and present customers to uncover what makes this way of life so irresistible.

For this adventurous family, life on the water was a natural choice. Drawn to the freedom of travel and love for the ocean it felt only right to raise their children surrounded by nature.

While they had some sailing experience, transitioning to full-time life aboard their boat was a challenge, however one they tackled together. Their children, having known nothing else, thrive in a world of ever-changing horizons, where each day brings new discoveries. Of course, there are difficulties— juggling parenting with the demands of boat life, unexpected repairs, and unpredictable weather—but they’ve adapted, finding their balance.

Through it all, the cruising community has been a source of friendship and support, with fellow sailors always ready to lend a hand. Their time at Redland City Marina, tackling major boat work for the first time, was one of their toughest challenges. Yet, despite the maintenance, logistics, and constant problem-solving, they wouldn’t trade this life for anything. Their advice? Don’t wait—just go. The freedom and memories are worth it.

DEAN AND RO “SAILING MARILYN KAYE “ 43FT ROBERTS MAURITIUS GRP YACHT

For Dean and Ro, life on the water is a balance of adventure, serenity, and shared dreams. Dean has always been drawn to the sea, first through swimming and sailing in his youth, then by joining the Navy at just 15. The ocean offers him a deep sense of calm, freedom, and escape.

While Ro loves their time at anchor, she’s less fond of long transits—but she does it for him, something he’s endlessly grateful for. Their journey truly began when Ro found their current yacht, a 43ft Roberts Mauritius GRP. After a year of hard work at Redland City Marina, they relaunched their new home and never looked back. At anchor, their days are filled with walks, snorkelling, paddleboarding, reading and fishing. One of the greatest joys of this lifestyle is the sailing community—a network of generous, likeminded people always ready to share knowledge.

For empty nesters considering this lifestyle, their advice is clear: if it’s your dream, pursue it. It’s not for everyone, but you’ll know soon enough. Plan thoughtfully, assess finances, safety, and experience, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. After all, in this life, nothing is set in stone—only in the sand below the high tide mark.

The Rise of ROVs in

In the world of boating, technology has always played a pivotal role in enhancing experiences, safety, and efficiency. From GPS systems to sonar mapping, boaters have long embraced innovations that make life on the water easier and more enjoyable. In recent years, a groundbreaking technology has emerged: remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and these vehicles are now available, and affordable, for the average boat owner. Underwater Australasia embraced this technology early in the piece and provides solutions to recreational and commercial boaters alike. Let’s get below the surface to discover more about these incredible robots.

One particular brand that’s proving its worth is the FiFish range by QYSEA. With intuitive controls, high-definition cameras, and a range of customisable attachments, these ROVs are becoming essential equipment on many boats, from sailing to fishing vessels and luxury yachts alike. They are super easy to deploy and use, lightweight and small, which is ideal on board.

EXPLORING THE DEEP

While a lot of boaters are keen divers or snorkelers and love getting wet, these drones can take you to 100m or even 200m below the surface, allowing for fun and exploration of areas not previously imaginable. The live video feed is mind blowing, while the camera records in 4K - you get to enjoy the deep blue from the safety of your cockpit. Want to explore at night? Why not - 5,000 lumens lights up the subject in view bringing all those glorious colours to life.

Boating

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

For those who think underwater drones are mere toys, think again. These robots serve a range of practical purposes that make boat ownership easier, safer, and more rewarding including:

HULL AND PROPELLER INSPECTIONS

One of the most significant advantages of having an ROV on board is the ability to inspect a vessel's hull or running gear, without having to haul it out of the water, and in any location. Marine growth, corrosion or entanglements can be assessed in real-time, saving boat owners time and money, but more importantly getting out of a potentially sticky situation.

ANCHOR AND MOORING CHECKS

Dropping anchor in an unfamiliar location can be challenging. Using an ROV, allows you to inspect the seabed to ensure a secure anchoring point. Having an ROV on board when in a remote location, ensures that you can perform routine checks on your boat providing complete peace of mind.

SEARCH AND RECOVERY OPERATIONS

Losing equipment overboard is a common issue on the water. Whether it's fishing gear, tools, or personal belongings, the ROV can be quickly deployed with a grabber arm (a claw that opens and closes) to locate and recover lost items

UNDERWATER EXPLORATION AND MARINE LIFE OBSERVATION

For those passionate about marine life, ROVs offer an incredible opportunity to observe aquatic ecosystems without disrupting the environment and the wildlife isn’t perturbed by this quiet little observer. High-definition 4K video, coupled with sophisticated lighting and stabilisation features, delivers stunning underwater footage of reefs, shipwrecks, and marine wildlife.

FISHING AND AQUACULTURE ASSISTANCE

Commercial and recreational fishers benefit from using ROVs to identify fish populations, inspect traps, or survey seabeds.

RELIABLE AND BUILT TOUGH

QYSEA’s extensive range of ROVs has you covered, no matter what, and their build quality is superb. Their wide range of ROVs includes recreational models through to commercial and industrial level ROVs with even more features. Some features include AI - plankton filtering (for a sharper image) “Diver Tracking” and “Vision Lock” - holding a position by just pressing a target on your remote controller screen.

QYSEA ROVs provide an unmatched combination of utility, exploration, and efficiency. Whether it’s for maintenance, safety, or simply the thrill of exploring the deep, these underwater drones are revolutionising life at sea. Investing in an ROV is no longer a luxury—it’s a must-have for the modern boater.

So if you want to plunge into the world below the waves, visit Underwater Australasia online or chat with our seasoned professionals in-store in Byron Bay or by phone and discover the untapped possibilities of the latest in technology and AI.

John Cowpe, managing director of TMG Yachts, shared his thoughts on the anticipated success of the EIGHTY 2, saying, “TMG YACHTS has been prolific in the delivery of the big cats from Lagoon, with around 10% of the global market, we understand precisely what it means to deliver, to own and to operate a vessel of this size. We have great trust in the Lagoon shipyard in Bordeaux as the world leader, and we will relish the opportunity to introduce this new vessel to our clientele. This model has everything that our customers demand – from spacious, customisable living areas to cutting-edge sustainability features. We expect this catamaran to quickly become the yacht of choice for those looking to explore the waters in ultimate style and comfort.”

UNMATCHED VIEWS & PERSONALISED SPACES

The Lagoon EIGHTY 2 is an embodiment of modern elegance, designed to immerse its owners in unparalleled comfort and sophistication. The expansive 50m² flybridge offers an exceptional

360-degree view of the horizon, providing the perfect space for relaxing or entertaining, with the flexibility to customise the layout to suit your personal style.

The yacht’s innovative design also features a 22m² deployable swim platform, allowing for seamless access to the ocean. Whether you’re enjoying watersports or simply taking in the sunset, this adaptable platform extends your living space, creating a closer connection to the sea.

SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION AT SEA

The EIGHTY 2 is also equipped with twin helms and integrated solar panels, making it one of the most eco-conscious yachts in its class. The solar panels, combined with an advanced lithium battery pack, power the onboard systems, allowing for extended periods at anchor without the need for a generator. This commitment to sustainability ensures that owners can enjoy their time on the water while minimising their environmental footprint.

THE OWNER'S PRIVATE RETREAT

At the heart of the EIGHTY 2 is the owner’s cabin—a true personal sanctuary. This spacious retreat features a king-sized berth, breathtaking sea views, and a private terrace for ultimate relaxation. The cabin is designed for privacy and comfort, offering a perfect balance of luxury and serenity. Flush floorboards throughout the yacht create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing movement and elevating the onboard experience.

CUTTING-EDGE MEETS TIMELESS ELEGANCE

The Lagoon EIGHTY 2 is designed by renowned naval architects Patrick le Quément and Nauta Design, who have masterfully blended contemporary luxury with timeless appeal. With a focus on maximising space and delivering a superior onboard experience, this yacht offers

a perfect blend of style and functionality. Every aspect of the EIGHTY 2—from the open-plan saloon to the expansive aft cockpit—has been meticulously crafted to ensure a smooth, elegant cruising experience.
