Fishing trip in Hvannasund

You sail along the seashore of Viðoy towards Viðareiði. With towering mountains the area is very scenic. You see spectacular gorges and grottoes along the shore – perfect for photography.

There are several interesting fishing spots. You may fish in the area by Viðareiði or by Múlin, the northern tip of Borðoy. You may catch Atlantic cod in some areas, while in other areas you may see haddock and whiting. You may also encounter other interesting species such as saithe and mackerel – good fighting fish and very tasty, too! On your return towards the marina you follow the coastline of Borðoy sailing close by the abandoned village of Múli. Should you be in luck and catch some fish, you are free to take the fish home with you. You may then choose to prepare a delicious meal!

Guided boat tour in Hvannasund

Sailing north from Hvannasund you explore the coastline of Viðoy. By Viðareiði you sail by wondrous landscapes, spectacular gorges, and grottoes – perfect for photography. You sail into one of the grottoes and enjoy a quiet moment in its unique atmosphere. You have time to take in the impressions while hearing local stories about people’s way of life here in this remote area of the Faroe Islands.

You are likely to observe seabirds such as puffns and guillemot. These birds are part of the marine ecosystem as they find all their food in the ocean.

We bring fishing rods and bait with us. Casting a line, you have a great chance of catching fish. Your catch is yours to keep!

Fishing trip in Funningsfjørður

You sail from the marina of Funningsfjørður on Eysturoy. The seashore varies with gorges and interesting landscapes. You head towards Elduvíksnes and sail along Barmur towards the gorge, Elduvíksgjógv. You procede along the shore of the idyllic village of Elduvík. To the east you see the majestic island, Kalsoy. In these surroundings you cast your fishing line! You may catch Atlantic cod, haddock, whiting and saithe. On rocky seabed, you may also find species such as ling, tusk, and redfish. You sail across the fiord towards the headland, Funningsmúli, and cast your line there. Returning to the marina, you follow the scenic western seashore with the beautiful village of Funningur. Should you be blessed with a catch, you get to take the fish home with you.

You sail from the marina of Funningsfjørður by dramatic landscapes. By the beautiful village of Funningur you hear local stories and sagas dating back to Viking times. At the headland of Funningsmúli there is a grotto that you may sail into in good weather. The view towards the island of Kalsoy is very scenic. The area is rich in marine life, and you may see seabirds and seals. We bring fishing rods and bait with us and casting a line you have a great chance of catching fish. Your catch is yours to keep!

You cross the fiord and sail towards the picturesque village of Elduvík. In the gorge of Elduvíksgjógv you enjoy a light meal. On your way back towards the marina, you sail along the eastern shore of the fiord by the cape of Elduvíksnes.

Fishing trip in Árnafjørður

Sailing close to the shore you see the varied landscape with ravines and grottoes. Keep your eyes open to seals, as they have this area as their natural habitat.

Off the coast by Bergið, you cast your fishing line! Oftentimes you catch Atlantic cod and haddock, but sometimes you are in luck to catch the fighting saithe and mackerel. At a certain location, you will try to catch the beautiful “reyðfiskur” – a variation of the Atlantic cod that assumes the red colours of its seaweed habitat.

Weather permitting, you cross the fiord towards Lishøvdi and fishing grounds favoured by the islanders for centuries.

Should you be blessed with a catch, you get to take the fish home with you. Preparing a meal from your own catch brings yet another dimension to your experience.

Guided boat tour in Árnafjørður

The fiord Árnafjørður is fenced by high mountains with distinct basaltic series of volcanic origin. Along the coast you see ravines and waterfalls. You sail by Bergið, a steep climb, close to 500m in height. There are grottoes that you can sail into in good weather. If you keep your eyes open, you may spot seals and seabirds, such as puffns and guillemots. You cross the fjord and sail towards Lishøvdi. On the tour you will be given time to take in the impressions while hearing local stories. Stories bound to the people, the land, and the marine life here.

We bring fishing rods and bait with us and casting a line you have a great chance of catching fish. Your catch is yours to keep!

The family tour

The design of the traditional Faroese boat allows for hands­on activities and learning. This is especially true for the children on board. You can sit in the stern of the boat by the rudder and stear the boat or you can control the outboard engine. If you reach out your hand, you can touch the sea. On this boat you have a clear view to all sides, and you can observe stunning landscapes and wildlife. Pay close attention to the various species of seabirds and learn to identify them. Sometimes you are in luck to see seals and even porpoise.

When you cast a fishing line, you may learn what is to be found under the surface of the water. There are several species of fish that may take your bait, including Atlantic cod, haddock and saithe. Your catch is yours to keep!

The “Fish, Visit & Dine” is an authentic full day experience. This concept combines a fishing tour with a local home­dining visit in the village. Starting out you sail out in one of the most magnificent fiords in the Faroe Islands. On the tour we hear stories and are mindful to landscapes and wildlife. Surrounded by dramatic landscapes you cast your fishing line. There are several species of fish that may take your bait, including Atlantic cod, haddock, saithe and redfish. Returning to the village, you are welcomed into a local home. You will be served a wonderful meal based on your catch of the day! Your host will use local ingredients and serve specialities. Hearing local stories brings yet another dimension to your experience.

The private boat tour

The private boat tour has two variations: The “Private guided tour” has many dimensions. You visit magnificent fiords observing landscapes with gorges and grottoes, perfect for photography. Stories of people’s way of life on these shores come to life. Mindful attention is given to wildlife. We bring fishing rods and bait. Casting a line you have a great chance of catching fish that you are welcome to keep.

On the “Private fishing tour” you visit secluded fiords with rich fishing grounds. The fishing is deep­sea angling below 100 feet of water. Depending on the area and the species we are trying to catch, we may try bait fishing or jigging. A variety of fish species are possible catches including haddock, Atlantic cod, saithe, whiting and redfish. Your catch is yours to keep!

To the private boat tours it is possible to book transfer from the capitol, Tórshavn.

Winter fishing trip in Kollafjørður

The Faroe Islanders have a tradition for fishing in winter. The catches can be good and the quality of the fish is excellent.

You sail from the marina of Kollafjørður out to the area “Tangafjørður”. The Tangafjørður is part of a larger inshore area fairly protected from ocean swells and currents.

You may catch several species of fish such as Atlantic cod, haddock, saithe, whiting, ling, tusk, whiting and perhaps flatfish where there is sandbed. Your catch is yours to keep! We bring floatation suits and boots, but you must still remember to wear warm clothes. The local recomendation is to wear Faroese wool, especially woolen socks. This tour is “by request” and can only be confirmed once the weather forecast is suitable, 2­3 days before the tour.

History

An old viking proverb, still in common use in the Faroe Islands, says: “Bundin er bátleysur maður”. Directly translated this means ”Bound is boatless man”. This saying illustrates the importance that the Faroese boat has had to the islanders. The boat was used for transportation of people between the islands, for fishing off the shore, in birdcatching and in transporting sheep to inaccessible pastures.

Handicraft tradition

The Faroese boat is the utmost creation of Faroese handicraft. It is clinker­built, a technique developed in the Viking culture more than a thousand years ago. The boat is built by eye and rule of thumb. The Faroese boatbuilding skill, an artform only few master in our day and age, is passed on from artificer to apprentice. The Faroese boat handles exceptionally well on the sea. It was developed primarily as a light rowing boat, but is also suitable for mast and sail. In modern days, the boats are oftentimes fitted with small outboard engines.

“Útróður”

The Faroese term for fishing with traditional boats is “útróður”. The word means “rowing out” and dates back to years long before engines existed. The foreman of the boat would be skilled at fishing, but most importantly, he had to have keen insight in weather and sea currents. When conditions were right, the crew was summoned. A hymn was sung on the outward journey and another on the journey home.

The national sport

“Kappróður” or boatracing in traditional boats is the national sport in the Faroe Islands. There are events for men, women, boys and girls in different categories according to boatsizes. There are anywhere from 6 to 10 rowers in each boat. The Faroese championship is decided over a series of rowing events during the summer. These rowing events are held in fiords around the islands. The final rowing event is helt in Tórshavn on the national holiday “Ólavsøka”, St. Olav’s Wake, on the 28th of July.
