Welcome Sailing in a traditional Faroese boat is a unique experience. You come so close to everything you see. To the sea, the landscapes along the seashore, the wildlife and the mysteries under the surface of the water. You can just reach out your hand and touch the sea. You are really there.

This guide will show you some of the beautiful places you can discover in a traditional Faroese boat. These authentic experiences are for small groups and families who enjoy active travel. There can be up to 5 guests on each tour. You reach magnificent fiords and small villages outside the most travelled areas.

On the Guided boat tours you sail along the seashore hearing local stories.

Stories from lives lived by the sea and with the sea. You learn about geology, birdlife and marine life. You also get to cast a fishing line.

The Fishing trips focus on sea-angling. You fish in beautiful surroundings.

Some of the fish you may catch are Atlantic cod, haddock, whiting and saithe.

The Boat rental aims at building memories through hands-on activity. When you rent a boat, you get to select the fiord. You may also choose to rent fishing gear. It is then up to you to explore.

Fishing trips in Funningsfjørður You sail from the marina of Funningsfjørður on Eysturoy. The seashore varies with gorges and interesting landscapes. You head towards Elduvíksnes and sail along Barmur towards the gorge, Elduvíksgjógv. You procede along the shore of the idyllic village of Elduvík. To the east you see the majestic island, Kallsoy.

In these surroundings you cast your fishing line!

You may catch Atlantic cod, haddock, whiting and saithe. On rocky seabed, you may also find species such as ling, tusk, and redfish.

You sail across the fiord towards the headland, Funningsmúli, and cast your line there. Returning to the marina, you follow the scenic western seashore with the beautiful village of Funningur.

Should you be blessed with a catch, you get to take the fish home with you.

Guided boat tours in Funningsfjørður You sail from the marina of Funningsfjørður on Eysturoy. You sail along the western seashore towards the beautiful village of Funningur. You hear the saga of Grímur Kamban, the first landnamsman to settle on these islands.

Further on you sail towards the headland of Funn­ingsmúli. There is a grotto that you can sail into in good weather. Keep your eyes open, as you often see seabirds and sometimes seals by the shore. We bring fishing rods, and you get to cast a line.

You cross the fiord and sail towards the village of Elduvík. You see the old boat houses and learn about traditional fishing in rowing boats. In the gorge of Elduvíksgjógv you enjoy a light meal.

On your way to the marina you sail along the eastern shore and the cape of Elduvíksnes.

Fishing trips in Árnafjørður Sailing close to the shore you see the varied landscape with ravines and grottoes. Keep your eyes open to seals, as they have this area as their natural habitat.

Off the coast by Bergið, you cast your fishing line!

Oftentimes you catch Atlantic cod and haddock, but sometimes you are in luck to catch the fighting saithe and mackerel. At a certain location, you will try to catch the beautiful “reyðfiskur” – a variation of the Atlantic cod that assumes the red colours of its seaweed habitat.

Weather permitting, you cross the fiord towards Lishøvdi and fishing grounds favoured by the islanders for centuries.

Should you be blessed with a catch, you get to take the fish home with you. Preparing a meal from your own catch brings yet another dimension to your experience.

Guided boat tours in Árnafjørður Árnafjørður is a fiord fenced by high mountains with distinct basaltic series from a volcanic origin.

Along the coast, you sail by ravines and waterfalls. You sail by Bergið, a steep climb, close to 500m in hight. There are grottoes that you can sail into in good weather. If you keep your eyes open, you may spot seals and seabirds, such as puffins and guillemots.

You cross the fjord towards Lishøvdi. On the tour you will be given time to take in the impressions while hearing local stories. Stories bound to the people, the land, and the marine life here. To give perspective, you get to cast a fishing line to see what is to be found under the surface of the ­water.

Returning to the marina, you follow the western seashore close by a long extinct settlement.

Fishing trips in Hvannasund You sail along the seashore of Viðoy towards Viðareiði. With towering mountains the area is very scenic. You see spectacular gorges and grottoes along the shore – perfect for photo­ graphy.

There are several interesting fishing spots. You may fish in the area by Viðareiði or by Múlin, the northern tip of Borðoy. You may catch Atlantic cod in some areas, while in some areas you may see haddock and whiting. You may also encount­ er other interesting species such as saithe and mackerel – good fighting fish and very tasty, too!

On your return towards the marina you follow the coastline of Borðoy sailing close by the aband­ oned village of Múli.

Should you be in luck and catch some fish, you are free to take the fish home with you. You may then choose to prepare a delicious meal!

Guided boat tours in Hvannasund Sailing north, towards Viðareiði, you explore the coastline of Viðoy. By Viðareiði you sail by wondrous landscapes, spectacular gorges and grottoes – perfect for photography. Weather permitting, you will sail into one of the grottoes and enjoy a moment with the engine turned off.

You will be given time to take in the impressions while hearing local stories about people’s way of life here in this remote area of the Faroe Islands.

You are likely to observe seabirds such as puff­ ins, black guillemot and Arctic tern. These birds are part of the marine ecosystem as they find all their food in the ocean. Adding to this context, we bring fishing rods, so that you can try to cast a fishing line.

Returning to the marina you sail by the aband­ oned village of Múli with stories of its own.

Fishing trips in Eiði From the marina of Eiði you sail along the western shore of the Eiðiskollur. The coastline is spectacular with gorges and grottoes and the epic seastacks, “Risin og Kellingin”.

There are rich fishing grounds in the area. Depending on weather and sea currents, you may cast your fishing line close to the seastacks, or at fishing grounds closer to the bay of Tjørnuvík on Streymoy.

Fish species such as Atlantic cod and haddock are frequent, and sometimes you see the hard fighting saithe and mackerel! In some areas, on sandy seabed, you may try bait fishing for flatfish species such as dab and plaice.

Should you be blessed with a catch, the fish is yours to take home. You may then choose to prepare a wonderful and healthy meal with fish that you have caught yourself!

Guided boat tours in Eiði Sailing out from the Eiði marina you follow the Eiðiskollur seashore. The coastline is spectacular with gorges and grottoes. Weather permitting, you will sail into one of the grottoes and enjoy the atmosphere inside. Further along the shore you find the famous seastacks “Risin og Kellingin”.

You may spot seals and seabirds such as puffins.

You hear local stories. Stories of a people building an existance on rich fishing grounds, hard work and keen knowledge. Adding perspective, you cast a fishing line and try your luck.

You head towards the Streymoy seashore towards the bay of Tjørnuvík. The history of this picturesque village by the blacksand beach dates back to Viking times.

You follow the coastline of Streymoy southwards before heading back to the Eiði marina.

Boat rental It is a unique experience to sail in a traditional Faroese boat. This boat type is designed for inshore sailing and is suitable for 2-6 persons. The boat is fitted with a 6 hp engine, 4 oars and extensive safety equipment.

When you book your boatrental on our website, you select your preferred area. There are several locations to choose from. You may use the map on the next page to assist you in your choice.

On our website, you will find a description of each area with images and a map showing the sailing area. You may also choose to rent fishing gear and try your fishing luck.

When you meet us at the marina, we will bring floatation suits, lifevests and boots. We will give safety and handling instructions on the boat and the equipment. It is then up to you to explore!

Difficulty level The sailing areas are cate­ gorized into three difficulty levels, green, yellow and red.

Green

The area is protected from ocean waves and currents.

Sailing is easy and you can explore a wide sailing area.

Yellow

The area is partly protected from ocean currents and waves. Sailing is easy in the inner areas of the fiord, but sailing in the outer areas requires experience.

Red

The area is highly affected by ocean currents and waves.

Sailing experience is required.

Map Faroe Islands

History An old viking proverb, still in common use in the Faroe Islands, says: “Bundin er bátleysur maður”. Directly translated this means ”Bound is boatless man”. This saying illustrates the importance that the Faroese boat has had to the islanders. The boat was used for transportation of people between the islands, for fishing off the shore, in birdcatching and in transporting sheep to inaccessible pastures.

Handicraft tradition The Faroese boat is the utmost creation of Faroese handicraft. It is clinker-built, a technique developed in the Viking culture more than a thousand years ago. The boat is built by eye and rule of thumb. The Faroese boatbuilding skill, an artform only few master in our day and age, is passed on from artificer to apprentice.

The Faroese boat handles exceptionally well on the sea. It was developed primarily as a light rowing boat, but is also suitable for mast and sail. In modern days, the boats are oftentimes fitted with small outboard engines.

“Útróður” The Faroese term for fishing with traditional boats is “útróður”. The word means “rowing out” and dates back to years long before engines existed. The foreman of the boat would be skilled at fishing, but most importantly, he had to have keen insight in weather and sea currents. When conditions were right, the crew was summoned. A hymn was sung on the outward journey and another on the journey home.

The national sport “Kappróður” or boatracing in traditional boats is the national sport in the Faroe Islands.

There are events for men, women, boys and girls in different categories according to boatsizes. There are anywhere from 6 to 10 rowers in each boat. The Faroese champ­ ionship is decided over a series of rowing events during the summer. These rowing events are held in fiords around the islands. The final rowing event is helt in Tórshavn on the national holiday “Ólavsøka”, St. Olav’s Wake, on the 28th of July.
