EVENTFUL PRODUCTION RUN FOR HENFIELD THEATRE COMPANY Henfield Theatre Company’s run of the musical show Anne of Green Gables proved to be a wonderful experience for all concerned but with rather more excitement than expected. On the second night the leading lady, 14 year old Ellie Rayward who played Anne was taken ill. As the company does not have the luxury of understudies, 17 year old Phoebe Ralph was asked to step in to take on the major role. The costume team performed several minor miracles and the show went on! Phoebe did a magnificent job and the cast felt that they were all swept along by the warmth and support of the audience. It was quite an evening! There was more to come at the matinee performance the following day. Anne of Green, written by Donald Harron, opened in Charlottetown, Canada, in 1965 and has been on the professional stage for most of the time since then. Donald Harron died three years ago aged 90 but remains something of an icon in Canada. It was, therefore, a huge surprise when his daughter Martha contacted the Henfield Theatre Company to say that she and her daughter Zoe were now living in London and were coming to the matinee performance in Henfield! Following the performance, Martha wrote to thank Lesley Barnes, the show’s director and praised the entire team for their efforts on the night. “I can’t thank you and your splendid team enough for the performance on Saturday. Enormous amounts of work went into it, most of it unpaid but all of it much appreciated.” Martin Love

Through fun-filled fundraising events that Guildsmen and friends participate in, the BP Guild has been able to help many local organisations and individuals. All money raised is returned to the village. Mostly we focus on our youth and our senior citizens and some direct seed money is given to individuals who wish to develop through participating in a charitable project or event. We wish to thank all that supported us in 2017, whether through donations of money, goods or in kind. A total of over £11,000 was given out to local groups. £5000 to the Community Scout Building Appeal, £3300 for the Senior Citizens outing, £1000 to HART, youth e.g. Scouts & Girl Guides HQ Trust etc, £1500 and others £200. Of course, it also supports events such as putting up and taking down our Christmas tree and marshalling Remembrance Sunday. We do incur some costs for insurance cover, rentals and for the repair or replacement of our assets such as the Marquees we hire out and we work hard to keep to these a minimum. To help us at one of our upcoming events, such as our popular Jumble sales (one coming up in March) look out for our notices or our website. Also, see our competitive rates on hiring our party tents/marquees. Kenneth McIntosh
