Editor’s Letter News of Tony Bishop’s extraordinary success in completing the journey from Land’s End to John o’ Groats on foot and in just 62 days arrived with us just as we go to print with this magazine, we are thrilled that he returned safe and well and avoided the worst of the storms! Not only did Tony walk 864 miles, he also raised thousands for St Barnabas House Hospice, a wonderful achievement. We’re very much looking forward to hearing all his stories and we’ll be sharing them with you in our January edition. Congratulations Tony, we hope you take a break before embarking on your next challenge. This issue we celebrate all the festive events happening in Henfield, from carol concerts to markets and fairs, especially the ever-popular Henfield Christmas Shopping evening (this time with added Barbie sparkle!). A new event on the village festive calendar is the Festive Henfield Artisan Market. Organisers Henfield Community Partnership have a packed guest-list of 50 stalls, plus some festive music, read all about it on page 24, it’s a great opportunity to find some really special Christmas gifts. We hope you enjoy the festivities and we wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas.

Henfield Greetings cards
Tony Bishop completes Lands End to John O’Groats walk!
Our local hero, 80 year-old Tony Bishop has arrived back in Henfield after completing his amazing 874 mile walk from John O’Groats to Lands End in just 62 days! In fact he probably did even more mileage, as at times he had to deviate from the direct route on congested main roads. It’s an amazing achievement and he hopes to exceed his target of £5,000 in support of St Barnabas, which will be a fantastic help to the hospice for which we are truly grateful. Donations can be made at www.justgiving.com - just search for Anthony Bishop to find his page.
New greeting card sets of Henfield featuring imagery from the art collection are on sale in museum and on the website. One featuring an Edwardian winter scene is perfect for Christmas and two more sets will be released in the new year.

ABBA Chique success!
The ABBA Chique evening held on Friday 3 November at the Henfield Hall was a great sellout success – as one of the dancing queens said, “It was as if a bubble of happiness burst over Henfield”. The takings from the evening will be a huge help as we work to keep the Haven providing its vital services. 2015 will be the Haven’s 10th Birthday – time for another burst of ABBA?

Dame Elizabeth Gresham Charity
Once again, Trustees of this historic charity generously donated to two local organisations, Henfield Youth Club and Henfield Foodbank (Horsham District Foodbank) on All Hallow’s Day at a service in the Parham Chapel at St Peter’s Henfield, as tradition dictates. Horsham Matters trusts and foundations officer Gill Davies said she was very grateful to the Trustees for the donation which would help support those in Henfield experiencing hardship. “The cost of living increases have pushed many household budgets to breaking point and as a result we are providing emergency food and fuel vouchers to more people than last year. Vintage Henfield
At Henfield Museum we are currently featuring something which is certainly old, but not beaded or pretty or finely sewn. It isn’t brightly coloured or in good condition, but bears the charm of a utilitarian garment from another age. Discovered in the gable-end of Henfield Workhouse (now private homes) we have here a pair of stays. Mostly linen, patches upon patches and worn to rags. Badly nibbled by rodents and saturated in dust (which is mostly mud), they bear witness to lying in the straw and dirt of old walls for a long time. The tabs at the waist have all been sewn on after the stays were made. Evidence of boning channels remain, but not the stiffening. I am guessing at c1800. The workhouse was open from 1735/6 to 1835. Were they deliberately concealed and left as a charm or deterrent to evil spirits? Hidden and forgotten? Or merely used to plug a hole? We will never know. They are on display at the museum at the moment. Check www.henfieldmuseum.org/ for opening hours.

Christmas is Coming Concert
The Friends of St Barnabas hope to see you at the Christmas is Coming Concert at the Henfield Hall on Saturday 9 December from 6.30pm. This years’ line-up promises to be full of fun, with many more performers from the Village up on stage, ably supported by hearty singing from our audience. We wish to thank the generous local businesses who have sponsored this event, through placing ads in the programme and offering wonderful raffle prizes, and the local clubs and groups who have given their support such as BP Guild, Ladybirds, Henfield Ukelele Group, the Guiding and Scout groups. The Hospice fundraising just would not happen without them. The running costs of the Hospice hugely rely on the local volunteers and donations so please come along to sing with us and support St Barnabas. Tickets are available from Stokes: £5 adults / £1 children (or from lesleybesson@hotmail.co.uk) to include mulled wine and a mince pie. See you there!

‘Thank you’ from John & Tim White
Local people were shocked when they heard news in February of a burglary and attempted murder in Henfield. The victims, John and Tim White, have suffered severe trauma. We are pleased that the trial, followed by a significant custodial sentence for the perpetrator in November, helps to bring the episode to a close. They are relieved that the ordeal is now over, although the physical and mental scars remain. John, who is 90, is still walking with the aid of a frame as his broken bones recover. John has requested that we pass on a message of sincere thanks to all the local people who have helped and supported him and Tim during the past few months. He has been touched by the kindnesses of local people. Many thanks to everyone who sent food parcels, offers of help, cards and messages of support. He would like to thank Sussex Police for the ongoing care they have received after the attack, and to thank the NHS hospital staff and Henfield Medical Centre for helping them on the road to recovery.

A miraculous reunion
Some months ago I came across this iron plaque in Henfield St Peters Churchyard completely hidden in a tangle of overgrown shrubs with the following text from James 4:14: “What is your life? It is even a vapour, That appeareth for a little time, And then vanisheth away”. In my preteens at boarding school 66 years ago my headmaster asked me to preach the Sunday Sermon at School Chapel. Quite untutored I chose my text from James 4:14 and set up concentrated Sulphuric Hydrochloric and Nitric Acids a glass flask and spotlight in the fourmetre high stone pulpit with no PPE gloves or visor - quite unthinkable in school today! My sermon opened before the speechless congregation with a cloud of deep dark-coffee nitric oxide sinister beneath the spotlight and dispersed in the cathedral-cavernous vault safely diluted but adding immeasurably by its acrid scent to the performance before the ocean of expectant faces www.henfieldbn5.co.uk | 13

A few weeks ago a townsperson provided was weeding the flag adjacent to the garden planted in memory of Olave Lady Baden-Powell Natalie Denning where the plaque stands. Uncovering the plaque from the tangle of briar I related the tale of my sermon and text. The miracle of the plaque and my unforeseen arrival in Henfield! The person was speechless and promised to clear the garden and reinstate it. Yesterday I discovered just that! A marvel in our eyes!

45 Hours a year – Less than 2 days
Can you spare this amount of time? We are desperate for more helpers in Guiding in Henfield to keep our units open and meeting every week. We need a minimum of two adults to hold our weekly meetings. One Guide unit only has one adult volunteer and relies on a parents rota to stay open. The other Guide unit and one Rainbow unit only have two adults volunteers, so if one adult can’t make it due to illness or work commitments or holiday, and they can’t find someone else willing to cover for them, they are having to cancel meetings, letting down our young members. If you can spare just 45 hours a year, 90 minutes a week, term time only, please get in touch via this link: www.girlguiding.org.uk/get-involved/
Pickleball
A series of free taster sessions for the new sport Pickleball at Henfield Leisure Centre were attended by a large number of enthusiastic players, who enjoyed their introduction to this family friendly game. Under the guidance of qualified Pickleball and Padel coach, Wayne Jones, players were taught the fundamentals of the game. Played with two-four people on a very small court, it is similar in style to tennis, but with a slower-moving ball perfect for testing technique. Pickleball is appropriate for all ages and abilities and is a perfect sport for families to play together. Courts are open to members and non-members and are subject to availability. Activewear and sports footwear are a requirement, but all equipment is provided. Courts are available to hire, at £10 per court for members and £12 for non-members, which includes bats and ball rental.

Foodies will delight, because this December it’s not only about delicious produce at the Artisan Market, but stallholders will be bringing some great gift ideas and specialist Christmas food ready for your festive table. For lovers of Christmas spirits (of the alcoholic rather than Scrooge variety!) you’ll find the delicious Lemon Gino and Chocolate Chilli Vodka from maker Georgie & Henners, or try Goldstone Rum, who showcase the very special (and always welcomed gifts) of five different rum flavours direct from their Henfield distillery. Or for wine experts there’s Dillon’s Vineyard, with white and rosé wines, perfect for Christmas lunch. For more immediate consumption, who can resist Krishna Cuisine’s mouth-watering (and very authentic) range of Indian delicacies, Himali is a stunning cook and a firm Artisan Market favourite. Open Bakery will tempt you with beautiful viennoiserie, as well as their artisan breads and sourdoughs. Libbie’s Coffee Co will provide warming drinks and snacks to keep you fuelled

there’s nothing better than meeting the maker themselves to appreciate how much love and attention goes into the process. EcoOctopus sell jewellery and textiles, some cleverly made from repurposed electrical cables, sea glass and recycled silver. Alison Crowe makes stunningly beautiful contemporary silver gemstone jewellery and has a very local following in her home village. Shallow Pottery make wheel-thrown practical and beautiful stoneware, and Coastal Yard sell wax melt burners, candles, soaps and natural fragrances which make perfect gifts. You’ll find handmade leather products from Leatherwork Lair, and woodcrafts from Twisted Designs. Inky Kat Studio has unusual and fun screen-print clothing, High Tree Makes create silver polymer jewellery and Be Natural Candles sell vegan diffusers and room sprays. Dave the BN5 Dog’s absolute favourite stall is Trumbles; Vicky has a range of natural dog-treats to tempt even the fussiest pooch (and according to Dave, if you look super cute with big eyes she’s got a whole bunch of samples to give away!) The stallholders namechecked above are just the tip of the frosted Christmas tree of all that’s available to browse and shop, so do come along, enjoy the music and the festivities provided by the hard-working organisers at the Henfield Community Partnership.

The Elves in the BP Guild will also be helping Father Christmas deliver presents to your little ones on Christmas Day morning again this year! If you would like Father Christmas to deliver a present to a child in the village on Christmas morning on your behalf, please take your presents to the Chief Elf Graham Denyer, at 5 Knowles Close, Henfield on the following dates between 4pm and 7pm: Monday 18th December; Tuesday 19th December; and Wednesday 20th December. Please ensure that all presents are clearly marked with the child’s name and address. There is limited space on the sleigh, so please no large presents. The cost for this service is £5 per present and Graham can be contacted on 01273 492402.
As usual, the BP Guild will be offering their Christmas Tree Recycling Service to people in the Henfield area, which raises much-needed funds for local good causes. If you would like us to dispose of your Christmas Tree in an easy and environmentally friendly way (trees are chipped and composted) for £10 per tree, please contact Dave Malkin on 01273 493843 or Rob Milsom on 07881 059600. Collections take place in the New Year, please call to book.
Do you need a clear-out before Christmas, or to purchase some preloved gifts? Grab a bargain at our ever-popular Jumble Sale and Auction, which will be held in the Henfield Hall on the 10th December starting at 2pm. All donations of good quality jumble will be gladly received on the morning of the Sale at the Henfield Hall. Finally, the Henfield BP Guild would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has helped support us and our activities over the past year. Please remember that ALL the money we raise with the kind support of the village throughout the year is spent on good causes in and around our great village. We look forward to your support in 2024 and would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

DECEMBER 2023 | Local interest
We will remember them Henfield residents respectfully lined the High Street in large numbers to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and more recent conflicts on Sunday 12 November. The Parade of local organisations, including various Scouting and Guiding groups, mustered at the War Memorial in Cagefoot Lane and marched to St Peter’s Church led by Brighton & Hove City Brass Band. After a Service of Remembrance at the church they then returned to the War Memorial for another short Service of Remembrance, a touching two-minute silence, the sounding of the Last Post and Reveille. Many poppy wreaths were then laid on behalf of various local organisations. As always, this was a very moving and memorable event. We are very grateful to Henfield Parish Council and St Peter’s Church for the organisation of this the other village remembrance events. We would also like to thank Brighton & Hove City Brass Band, and Henfield Club for their warm hospitality.

PAIN-FREE DENTISTRY
For over 150 years the syringe has seen little advancement in its technology, the Wand pain-free injections brings the administration of anaesthesia to the 21st century! Using its computer controlled flow rates it ensures that the anaesthesia is delivered below your pain threshold. With pain-free injections you can relax about visiting your dentist. Here are a few reasons why you might want to have treatment using the wand: • Pain free treatment • No risk of long term effects such as paraesthesia • Virtually no numbness or pain after the treatment • Able to numb just one tooth • More comfort for you and the dentist

Different Energy Levels and performance
How using different energy colours can positively impact your team, culture, and business performance. The type of energy your people bring to the workplace can be closely tied to the overall energy of your organisation and its performance. Your people will have different energy styles, and it is essential as a manager to understand this to further adapt your overall business performance, as well as retain your people. Learning how to adapt your conversations to accommodate an employee’s preferences while holding a meaningful conversation, can be key to building a team that thrives and fosters trust between colleagues and mangers. Are you confident how you need to communicate the plans and the objectives with your managers, team and people in a way that will motivate them and get them engaged? Consider this question, which of your managers will: • Want more time to consider and process the information you’ve given them, need more meticulous written details of the process, and any relating documents? • Be excited to discuss the ideas within the meeting and be more motivated through
verbal discussions that allow them to visualise how their own personal contribution enhances the new process? • Be more motivated if you go into the conversation with an idea of who they can lean on for support if they need it and may need reassurance? • Want a brief meeting that quickly explains the new process and exactly what is needed from them, by when? Moore Kingston Smith People Advisory can help, introducing Insights Discovery and the four different colour energies. Insights Discovery workshops are key for leaders and managers to really understand their people. Knowing how to motivate them and communicating with them will get the best performance results. How to support your people knowing their preferred working and learning style will set your business up for success. Why should I know what colour preferences my people have? Understanding more about how to effectively communicate and drive the different colour energies is vital for leaders to boost team performance and unlock their full potential.
Cool Blue need: facts, details, structure, and process
Earth Green need: support, reassurance of fairness, teamwork
Send a meeting invite and agenda in advance Send any documents you want to discuss during the meeting in advance, so that the employee has time to review and process the information Follow up with meeting notes, and any relevant follow up/review dates Follow up with written details of any objectives that were set in the meeting
Set the meeting up in a supportive manner Focus on the positives and how the topics can positively impact the team / entire workforce rather than just the individual If the meeting topic involves change, ensure they are made aware it is a fair and consistent change Try to incorporate teamwork and collaboration into plans / objectives
Fiery Red need: quick, precise details and expectations
Sunshine Yellow need: appreciation, to be heard and involved, collaboration
Keep the meeting short, precise and to the point Clearly set out exactly what it is that you expect or want from them, and by when If you need to follow up in writing, keep it to bullet points Don’t provide any information or documentation that isn’t relevant at that specific time
Provide recognition in the form of appreciation and acknowledgement Let the employee know that this is a platform for them to give their feedback and be listened to Explain their targets and objectives enthusiastically and show them encouragement Add conversations about team-based socialising or collaboration work

A high performing team is where each individual feels valued and performs to their highest potential. When looking at your recruitment strategy, you must consider structuring your teams to include all four colour preferences to create a more balanced approach towards decision making and therefore a more supportive environment. Success depends on each person understanding their role and delivering the best possible experience. This depends on them understanding the new process, what the expectations are, how they should be communicating this and changes along with timescales and outcomes. Learning how to adapt your conversations to accommodate an employee’s preferences, while holding a meaningful conversation can be key to building a team that thrives and fosters trust between colleagues and managers. Our workshops are designed to get your people to think about not only their own colour preferences, but also educate and support them in how to identify it in others. This in turn will help them adapt their communication style appropriately, creating a more considerate, understanding, and harmonious work environment.
