Testing. Testing! As a Nutrition Consultant working with a Functional Medicine approach, my main focus with clients is to look into causative factors of ill health. With careful questioning about current symptoms, past health issues, on-going and past medications, a food diary and lifestyle information, I aim to discover the underlying causes and triggers of their condition. For centuries naturopaths have used evaluation tools such as assessing nails, hair and the tongue. These I utilise within the clinic. We also discuss reoccurring facial spots and blemishes and may use Ph strips to test alkalinity. However, I do like to get some data too. Testing with blood, saliva, urine or the stool can really push forward with alleviating symptoms and reaching those health goals. The option of functional testing allows a more accurate assessment of mineral deficiencies, sub-optimal diets and organs in need of support. The types of test I offer include the Adrenal Stress saliva test which offers an insight into whether a client would benefit from a level of adrenal support to enable them to cope more efficiently with the stressors of modern living. For IBS type symptoms I offer the Comprehensive Stool Analysis which gives insights into gut function and identifies parasites, yeasts and gut inflammation. The very popular Lorisian Food Intolerance Test is a pin-prick test which picks up anti-body reactions to common foods and is often indicative of a ‘leaky gut’ so can act as the first stage of an elimination diet. Homocysteine testing is another test which I often recommend. Research shows that high levels can be indicative of the development of heart disease and strokes. Raised levels have also been implicated in conditions ranging from migraine to declining memory, poor concentration and fertility issues. Another popular test is the Bone Resorption assay which can indicate bone health so very useful for clients who are concerned about osteoporosis. We don’t need to wait until we develop signs of ill health. Nutritional Therapy works well as a preventative approach too. The most comprehensive test I offer is the ONE test; this urine test reveals whether your current diet has what it needs for you to remain optimally well. Consider booking yourself in for an MOT!
