¿Qué color manda la próxima temporada? El multicolor está de moda. Tonalidades verdes, rojas, naranjas y amarillas predominan en las colecciones otoño-invierno. Una explosión caleidoscópica de tonos incorporada a una mezcla de estilos que supera la realidad. Una dosis de surrealismo de colores en la primera línea de la moda. Una dimensión fantástica, una colección de diferentes formas y tamaños, un espectáculo visual como un collage de un artista. Pero no es una paleta de color cualquiera. Una milicia de colores contrapuestos, diferentes sensaciones retro de los años 40 a los años 70, adornados con gafas de enormes monturas o joyas psicodélicas. Un glamour excéntrico que crea unos modelos individuales para unos looks sorprendentes con una sensualidad inteligente. Entre toda esa excentricidad, los diseñadores dejan volar su imaginación y añaden sombreros a la ecuación, convirtiéndolos en el elemento central de sus diseños. Combinados con estolas o abrigos faux fur -que se llevan grandes este invierno- como punto fuerte del dictado de la moda. En el pasado los sombreros eran un indicador del estatus social, hoy en día son la corona de cada uno de nosotros.

Next season’s big colour rule? Multicolour is bang on-trend. Shades of green, red, orange and yellow are seen across the board in the autumn-winter collections. It’s a kaleidoscopic burst of chromatic exuberance incorporated in a mix and match of styles that goes beyond reality, injecting a dose of colourful surrealism on the fashion frontline. In this fantastical dimension, it’s an assemblage of different shapes and sizes, a visual feast like an artist’s collage. But this is no ordinary palette. A militia of clashing colours, different retro feels from 1940s to 1970s, accessorised with huge-framed sunglasses or psychedelic jewels. But the folly of glamour creates individual pieces for standout looks and an intelligent sexiness with a unique flounce. Amid all the eccentricity, hats off to the designers who let their imagination run riot and added millinery to the equation, making it their design’s centerpiece. Fluffy, oversized or minimal, the hat is the undisputed protagonist on the catwalk, whether it is an ostrich-feather hood or an elongated baseball cap, ethically faux fur or recycled materials. Combined with faux fur stoles and coats, which are big this winter, as the fashion heavyweights dictate. In the past the hat was an indicator of social status, today it’s a crown we can all wear.

It’s excess all areas. Amid the eccentricity in the menswear autumn-winter collections, a classic that never fades emerges triumphant. It’s a paragon of elegance, a staple in everyone’s style - the suit. You would expect darker tints to reign supreme this winter but, in fact, we are witnessing an explosion of colours. We breathe and live colour, and as Apollinaire said, “Colour is the fruit of life”. Designers rightfully embrace it, creating an insurgence of pop to lighten up the darker months. So it’s colour aplenty, a rainbow of hues and tones flows abundantly through the menswear wardrobe, and the suit is here to stay. Classic with a twist.

A versatile artist, one of the 20th century’s most original, creative talents, Piero Fornasetti (born into a middle-class family in a Milan in turmoil on 10 November 1913), revolutionised decoration and led it into the modern age, bringing art to everyday life. Sculptor, painter, interior decorator and art book printer, he liked to describe himself as a Renaissance artist. One of the most important interpreters of Made in Italy values and expertise, he set his seal on 11,000 objects, including furniture, chairs, plates, vases, ceramic objects, lamps, tables, fabrics, carpets, tiles and costumes. His made his debut in 19 47 at the Milan Triennale, displaying twenty-four plates bearing simple black, gold and white designs that were so successful Fornasetti began to print and produce porcelain objects on his own account, then printed screens and trays, winning him international fame. A tireless genius, he disdained the term “designer”, twisting it into “desìnger”, a word in the Lombardy dialect.

Escultor, pintor, decorador de interiores, impresor de libros de arte, amaba definirse como un artista del renacimiento. Uno de los principales intérpretes del made in Italy, que llegó a firmar 11mil obras entre muebles, sillas, platos, vasos, objetos de cerámica, lámparas, escritorios, telas, alfombras, baldosas y trajes. Debutó en 1947 en la Triennale de Milán, exponiendo 24 platos, con dibujos simples en blanco, negro y oro; fue un éxito y por ello, Fornasetti comenzó a imprimir y a producir él mismo objetos de porcelana, luego biombos y bandejas que le dieron fama internacional. Un genio infatigable, que desdeñaba la palabra designer, trabucándola en “desìnger” en dialecto lombardo.
His was a mysterious, surreal, metaphysical and ironic universe where worlds within worlds wove dreamlike visions of a voyage beyond time, to the limits of imagination. “What I did was something more than mere decoration. It was an invitation to the imagination, to think, to set ourselves free from the mechanistic, inhuman objects surrounding us. Entry tickets to the realm of the imagination”, he explained. After studying at the Accademia di Brera, where he was expelled for his allergy to rules, he launched his artistic activity with a series of exhibitions, finally meeting and collaborating with Gio Ponti. As soon as one had an idea, he would telephone the other, and on the basis of sketches and small designs the two of them would create unique pieces. In his 75 years of life, Fornasetti’s portfolio of creations included the frescoes at the Palazzo Bo in Padova, and decorating the interiors of the Sanremo Casino and the transatlantic liner, Andrea Doria.

Luego de haber estudiado en la Academia de Brera, de donde fue expulsado por su alergia a las reglas, comenzó su actividad artística en muchas exposiciones hasta su encuentro y colaboración con Gio Ponti: apenas uno de los dos tenía una idea, se llamaban por teléfono y a partir de bocetos y de pequeños proyectos, creaban piezas únicas. En sus 75 años de vida, Fornasetti firmó también los frescos de Palazzo Bo en Padua y decoró el interior del Casino de San Remo y del transatlántico Andrea Doria.

From street person to street artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s graffiti art transcended the barriers of language and culture. A pioneering prodigy of the downtown New York art scene, he lived through a new era of celebrity culture driven by the rise of television and the work of Andy Warhol. The new medium catapulted him to instant fame, albeit brief and intense, as he died tragically at 27.

besson and The alpha facTor In 1967 Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres launched a classic French comic strip, published in Pilote magazine. Set in the year 2770, Valérian e Laureline tells the story of two space-time police operatives. Fifty years on, the same characters are making their big-screen debut in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, a big-budget science fantasy film directed by Luc Besson. The two main characters, played by Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, are charged with maintaining order in the universe under the leadership of their commander Clive Owen. They set off on a mission to the intergalactic metropolis of Alpha, populated by thousands of different species. Alpha’s 17 million people have pooled their resources to improve the life of all the city’s inhabitants, but dark forces are in play, menacing the entire human race.
En 1967 nace de la pluma de Pierre Christin y de Jean-Claude Mézières un clásico del cómic francés, publicado en las páginas de la revista Pilote: Valérian y Laureline, la historia de dos agentes de policía espacio-temporal, ambientada en 2770. The bronx sound After last year’s resoundingly successful launch, Netflix has released the second part of The Get Down, the cult series by Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby). It portrays a group of adolescents from the South Bronx who, armed only with a few word plays, improvised dance moves and spray cans energise the vibrant music scene of the time, contributing to the birth of hip-hop. The story begins in 1978, in a New York riven by social tensions, a city on the edge of bankruptcy populated by ruthless gangsters and unscrupulous record industry executives. The youngsters quickly realise that only their creativity is all they can rely on for their survival. In the middle of a cultural revolution that will overturn their world, young lovers Books and Mylene are ready to sacrifice everything for music and the love that binds them.

In Santa Eularia del Río, below the Puig de Misses church, stands the Can Ros house. Since 1994, it has been the home of the Ethnographic Museum of Ibiza, dedicated to the conservation and transmission of Ibiza’s rural culture. When she was nine months old her parents, who are also artists, came to live in Ibiza, where she grew up in a country house in Sant Joan. She spent 10 years in Brussels, discovering a world full of art and new challenges. Collagist, creative and lawyer, Lila’s world fits on a blank page where criticism allows itself be seen and touched.

Lila Licciardi nació en Francia. Cuando tenía nueve meses, sus padres, que también son artistas, se vinieron a vivir a Ibiza donde Lila creció en una casa de campo en Sant Joan. Estuvo 10 años en Bruselas, donde encontró un mundo rebosante de arte y nuevos desafíos. Collagista, creativa y además, abogada, el mundo de Lila cabe en un papel en blanco donde la crítica se deja ver y tocar.

Collage came into her life through love. She met her boyfriend at Ateliers Mommen in Brussels, where she began to create her first works to decorate the walls of the house. Bohemia and the avant-garde were two rules that she obeyed very tastefully. Her fascination for Magritte and Win Taciturn was also born there. Lila began to make compositions with photos and memories from her childhood, her friends and family. One of her techniques is the association of colours that blend with intuition and a clear social message that invites us to reflect on the context in which we live. “Life has led me to the collage, to express myself through art with messages and not just use it as a decorative instrument.”
El collage llegó a su vida de la mano del amor. Conoció a su novio en Ateliers Mommen de Bruselas, donde empezó a hacer sus primeras obras para decorar las paredes de aquella casona en la que bohemia y vanguardia eran dos reglas que Lila obedeció muy a gusto. Allí nació para ella también la fascinación por Magritte y Win Taciturn. Lila empezó a hacer composiciones con fotos y recuerdos de su infancia, de sus amigos y familiares. Una de sus técnicas es la asociación de colores que mezcla con la intuición y un claro mensaje social que invita a reflexionar sobre el contexto en que vivimos. “La vida me ha llevado al collage, a expresarme a través del arte con mensajes y no solo como un instrumento decorativo.”

A little of everything and everything together. There’s a picture that talks about romantic love where I have established a level rule. That level is unbalanced in opposition to the idea of a perfect, platonic love. Another piece, Gene game, is inspired by my brother, who is a genetics researcher, and the random that cannot be controlled. This is a critique focused more on the environment.
Un poco de todo y todo junto. Hay un cuadro que habla del amor romántico donde he incrustado una regla de nivel. I frequented the Dada Café, where anarchists, musicians and artists met. The world of antiques in Belgium was another place that’s constantly immersed in the avant-garde. Being in touch with this world caused the director of the House of Magritte to invite me to an exhibition held to celebrate the institution’s 10th anniversary. It was not something I sought out, it was a situation that came about from being in the right place at the right time, doing what I enjoyed.
Frecuentaba mucho el Café Dada donde se reunían anarquistas, músicos y artistas. El mundo de las antigüedades de Bélgica era otro sitio donde respirar permanentemente vanguardia. Estar en contacto con este mundo hizo que el director de la Casa Museo de Magritte me convocara para una exposición que se celebró con motivo de los 10 años de la institución. No fue algo buscado. Fue una situación que se dio por estar en el lugar y momento indicados haciendo lo que me gustaba.
You use crystals from abandoned objects, crosses, compasses, pages from old magazines, electronic chip inlays...what is the reason for this kind of creative chaos?
Usas cristales de objetos en desuso, cruces, brújulas, papeles de revistas antiguas, incrustaciones de chips electrónicos… ¿Cuál la razón de esta especie de caos creativo?
I like the quality of the paper in the old publications that I find in second-hand markets. At the same time, when I use cameos I try to create a reminiscence of the last century. It is true that my works have a somewhat Baroque style, where time is a recurring theme. I confess that time is something that I do not manage very well in my life - perhaps this is why it is present in almost all my work.
Me gusta la calidad del papel de las impresiones antiguas que encuentro en los mercadillos de segunda mano. Al mismo tiempo cuando utilizo camafeos intento hacer una reminiscencia del siglo pasado. Es verdad que mis obras tienen un estilo algo barroco donde el tiempo es un tema recurrente. El tiempo -confieso- es algo que en mi vida no controlo muy bien… Quizás por ello está presente en casi todo mi trabajo.

I don’t think my tattoos influence, although of course they attract attention! But I think that being an influencer is something more personal than aesthetic. What they look for when they follow me is my clear, direct way of seeing life, because I don’t pretend to be someone I’m not.

Qué ha aportado Ibiza a tu forma de vida? Me lo ha dado todo: los mejores amigos, el verdadero amor, libertad para poder expresarme sin ser criticada, un paraíso donde poder disfrutar de la naturaleza, de sus gentes y costumbres, un lugar donde me encantaría pasar el resto de mis días.
When you look at a tattoo from years ago, what emotions does that inspire? I am my own scrapbook! Not all of them have a cool backstory, some are things that remind me of moments lived, adventures, places I’ve been. Each one tells me where I come from and who I am, they help keep my feet on the ground.
Cuándo miras un tattoo de hace años atrás, que emociones se te presentan? Soy mi propio álbum de recortes... No todos tienen una historia cool detrás, algunos son cosas que me recuerdan momentos vividos, aventuras, lugares donde he estado. Cada uno me habla de dónde vengo y quién soy, me hacen tener los pies en la tierra.
What do you dream of being that you are not yet? At this point in my life I’m more than I ever imagined I’d be. I’m not looking to be anything else, it’s not that I don’t have goals or crazy dreams, now I have everything I need to be happy - a wonderful family and friends who love me. And what will be, will be!

Normally my creativity surprises the client’s initial expectations, so the limit defines the satisfaction between the person who seeks my designs and the final result we arrive at together.!

Dubbed the iconoclast of fashion, she rejected the classic rules of garment aesthetics, pushing boundaries of gender and culture – Rei Kawakubo founded the label Comme des Garçons in 1969 and is one of the most influential designers of the past 40 years. She blurred the line between fashion and art and made us re-think fashion. Her designs mixed masculine and feminine cutting and shaping traditions, as well as Eastern and Western styles. Her abstract, surreal creations resemble sculptures and architectural pieces. It’s pure avant-garde fashion rewarded by an exhibition, Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: the Art of the In-Between on show at the Met Museum in New York. In Kawakubo’s work, this in-between space is revealed as an aesthetic sensibility, establishing an unsettling zone of oscillating visual ambiguity that challenges conventional notions of beauty. A thematic rather than a traditional retrospective, the exhibition shows nine concepts of dualism recurrent in Kawakubo’s work: Absence/Presence, Design/ Not Design, Fashion/Anti-Fashion, Model/Multiple, High/ Low, Then/Now, Self/Other, Object/Subject, and Clothes/Not Clothes. Kawakubo breaks down the imaginary walls between these dualisms, exposing their artificiality and arbitrariness.
La llamada iconoclasta de la moda rechazó las normas clásicas de la estética del arte de vestir sobrepasando los límites del género y la cultura: Rei Kawakubo fundó la marca Comme des Garçons en 1969 y es una de las diseñadoras más influyentes de los últimos 40 años. Difuminó la línea que separa moda y arte, e hizo que nos replanteáramos la moda. Sus diseños combinan cortes masculinos y femeninos, formas tradicionales y estilos occidentales y orientales. Sus creaciones abstractas y surrealistas parecen esculturas o piezas arquitectónicas. Auténtica moda vanguardista merecedora de una exposición en el Museo Metropolitano de Nueva York titulada: “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: the Art of the In-Between”. En la obra de Kawakubo este espacio intermedio se revela como una sensibilidad estética que crea una inquietante zona de ambigüedad visual oscilante que desafía las nociones convencionales de belleza. Una retrospectiva temática que muestra nueve conceptos de dualismo recurrente en la obra de Kawakubo: Ausencia/Presencia, Diseño/No Diseño, Moda/Antimoda, Modelo/Múltiple, Alto/Bajo, Antes/Ahora, Yo/Otro, Objeto/Sujeto y Ropa/No ropa. Kawakubo challenged fashion conventions with playful asymmetries and deconstructed proportions, her fashion aesthetics cemented her reputation as a radical thinker, subversive and revolutionary. “Ordinary life doesn’t interest me. I seek only the high moments. I am in accord with the surrealists, searching for the marvellous,” said the refined, sensitive writer Anaïs Nin. Another exceptional mind, Albert Einstein, shared this point of view, but his world was the sciences rather than the arts. “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed”. Everything that transcends the ordinary, then, will enrich everyone’s life. That’s why young designers aren’t just clamouring for attention when they propose yachts with unusual shapes or concepts that will probably never become reality. As well as addressing a need to open the eyes of those looking at the design, to inspire extraordinary emotions, they also seek to propose something so out of the ordinary that it clearly shows that it’s still possible to follow a different design path even in the rather hidebound world of yacht design, which until now has been more interested in size than solutions, where the belief is that a huge, bland yacht is more likely to attract attention than a small, unusual one. So some have decided to combine the two, knowing that if big is good, big and unusual is even better. The 29-year-old designer George Lucian was thinking in this way when he drew up his 140 metre Super Yacht Airship Carrier Concept - Dare to Dream.

“La vida ordinaria no me interesa. Sólo busco los momentos altos. Estoy en la búsqueda de lo maravilloso”, así decía un alma distinguida y sensible como la de la escritora Anaïs Nin. En la misma sintonía estaba también Albert Einstein, otra mente excelsa, pero dedicada a la ciencia y no al arte: “Quien ya no pueda maravillarse, es como si estuviera muerto y sus ojos estuvieran cerrados”. Todo aquello que sale de lo común entonces, aumenta el valor de la vida de cada uno. Por ello y no solamente por estar en el candelero, algunos diseñadores jóvenes proponen yates de insólitas formas o concepts que quizás nunca llegarán a ser reales. Por un lado está la necesidad de hacer abrir los ojos a aquel que mira, regalándole emociones extraordinarias. Por el otro, el deseo de proponer algo fuera de los esquemas para demostrar que es posible un proyecto alternativo en el mundo poco móvil del diseño de yates, que hasta ahora ha sido más sensible a las medidas que a las soluciones: para hacerse ver, es mejor un barco normal pero lo más grande posible que uno más pequeño pero inédito. Hay alguien que ha decidido unir ambas cosas, sabiendo que si es grande es mejor, si es grande e inédito, mejor aún. Es el caso del designer y artista George Lucian, de 29 años que ha diseñado el Super Yacht Airship Carrier Concept - Dare to Dream de 140 metros.

“My concept is dedicated to a visionary owner who is excited by both yachts and flying”, he explains, “And those who would like to explore new locations while enjoying the calm and elegance of an airship, then dining on board a yacht moored in Monaco Bay or spending a few days flying over the Mediterranean before returning to moor the airship on their superyacht”. The yacht is a nest, a shelter, but the airship can provide a cruise, although in a different medium. “As well as the amenities a superyacht can offer, the airship is designed to host a couple, providing them with a room that can be used for dining, cocktails or relaxation”. The young Monaco-based designer’s project is intended to bring together two elegant, romantic means of transport that delighted tourists in the early 1900s, but have now been given a 21st century makeover.
“Mi concept está dedicado a aquel armador visionario cuyas pasiones son el yachting y el vuelo”, explica, “y a quien desee explorar nuevos lugares disfrutando de la calma y de la elegancia de un dirigible para luego cenar a bordo de su yate amarrado en la bahía de Mónaco o volar un par de días sobre el Mediterráneo antes de volver a amarrar su dirigible en el súper yate”. No solamente la embarcación es un nido, sino que también el dirigible permite realizar un crucero, con una fluidez diferente: “además de las amenidades que puede ofrecer el súper yate, el dirigible ha sido proyectado para hospedar una pareja y cuenta también con un salón para cenas, cocktails o simplemente para relajarse”. El concepto del joven diseñador monegasco nace para reunir los dos medios más elegantes y románticos que, en los comienzos del 1900, llevaban turistas a todos lados, pero que hoy ha sido reexaminado y actualizado en el siglo XXI.
But it is possible to be iconoclastic and unusual, even without going too far - in terms of dimensions, at least. That’s what’s on offer from the German Henri von Freyberg, who normally works in the automobile sector and has experience with MercedesBenz. For McLaren he has developed a concept that reinterprets the Formula 1 single-seater and adapts it to megayacht sailing. The design is typified by the large fin at the yacht’s stern on which the power units are mounted.

The combination of car and yacht always leads to unusual solutions, but these are often the easiest to transform into reality, because auto brands are willing to invest time and money to attract attention to themselves. And when the development of a futuristic project involves big players in the car and yacht building worlds then a result is almost bound to be only a short while in coming. This is certainly the case with the Bugatti Niniette 66, a homage that Palmer & Johnson, one of the most brash, irreverent and aesthetically daring yards, has decided to pay to the Chiron, the latest upmarket model presented at the latest Geneva Motor Show. The stylistic play centres on a large C that characterises the cockpit of the land-based GT design, while also forming the sweeping line from bow to superstructure on the 19-metre P&J. Of course, the yacht interiors are also in pure Bugatti style, with carbon everywhere and the stylistic features of the world’s fastest car adopted as distinctive elements. Unsurprisingly, drawing inspiration from the Chiron means the yacht’s performance has to be pretty out of the ordinary, and it is - the two waterjets are powered by a pair of 1000 hp Man V8 engines that provide a top speed of 44 knots. It’s not hard to imagine that one of the lucky owners of a Chiron will be tempted by its wave-riding sister.

La conmixtión entre los coches y los yates ha sido siempre un presagio de soluciones insólitas y a menudo fáciles de realizar, porque las marcas automovilísticas están dispuestas a invertir para llamar la atención. Y cuando el nacimiento de un proyecto futurible le interesa a un nombre famoso de las cuatro ruedas junto a otro nombre importante de los yates, entonces el éxito está seguramente a la vuelta de la esquina. Ésto sucede con la Bugatti Niniette 66, el homenaje que el astillero Palmer Johnson, uno de los más desacralizadores, atrevidos y estéticamente valientes, ha querido hacerle a la Chiron, la última propuesta de la famosa marca automovilística de gran lujo presentada en el último Salón del Automóvil de Ginebra. El juego estilístico se centra en la letra C que caracteriza a la gran turismo terrestre y que diseña su habitáculo, mientras que en la 19 metros P&J acompaña la mirada desde la proa hacia la cubierta. Es obvio que también el interior del yate mantiene el puro estilo Bugatti, exhibiendo la fibra de carbono y los clásicos recursos estilísticos del coche más rápido del mundo, retomados aquí como sus elementos distintivos. Obviamente el rendimiento se adecua al modelo de referencia: los dos waterjet son impulsados por dos motores Man V8 de 1.000 CV, velocidad máxima 44 nudos. Es difícil imaginar que aquellos afortunados que posean una Chiron no se dejen tentar por tener también su hermana acuática.

You see them parked on the street, and in our dreams because in the end not everyone can run a classic car. You need money, quite a lot of it, boundless passion, a good knowledge of the subject, a willingness to make sacrifices and plenty of patience. But dreams don’t cost anything, and for cars, the 1960s were a time that can never be repeated. Models of the period offered perfect shapes, lovely colour shades (often bright and lively) and a throaty engine rumble. The problem is that once the initial infatuation has faded, sliding behind the wheel is followed by a sudden wake-up call. Rock-hard clutch, soggy brakes, heavy steering, no air conditioning, barebones comfort and exhaust fumes that cling stubbornly to your clothes. Always assuming that the four-wheeled object of your desire will start, something which should never be taken for granted. It’s enough to discourage even the most confirmed optimist. But strangely enough, just when you’re fearing the worst, this troublesome daydream does not develop into a nightmare. And the film that’s been playing in your head gives way to a surprising revelation - this classic you’ve been ogling isn’t, in fact, all that classic. Some mechanical details are too contemporary, too precise, the sound is too genteel. And suddenly a world of contradictions opens up, the paradoxes surrounding the 21st century retro models. They may be totally identical to the original, but to all intents and purposes they’re modern vehicles.

Si las veis aparcadas en la calle, comenzáis a soñar. Soñáis porque son vehículos clásicos y son pocos quienes se lo pueden permitir. Se necesita mucho dinero, una dosis de pasión desmesurada, muchos conocimientos en la materia pero también un discreto espíritu de sacrificio y a veces mucha paciencia. Pero soñáis igual, porque soñar no cuesta nada y porque los años 60, en el mundo de los automóviles, fueron algo que jamás se volvió a repetir. Por su perfección en las formas, las tonalidades de los colores (a menudo fuertes y llamativos), la densidad de sus sonidos. El problema es que luego de subir a bordo y de ponerse al volante, una vez superado el enamoramiento del momento, os despertáis de golpe. Embrague granítico, frenos largos, dirección laboriosa, sin aire acondicionado, confort reducido al mínimo y gases de escape que se pegan en las ropas. Esperando que además el objeto del deseo se decida a arrancar, algo que no es tan obvio en estos casos. Todo esto puede acobardar hasta al más obstinado visionario. Sin embargo, cuando se piensa en lo peor, extrañamente ese sueño discordante con los ojos abiertos no se transforma en una pesadilla. Toda esa “película” que en pocos segundos pasa por vuestra cabeza, os deja una sorprendente revelación. Ese coche clásico que habéis consumido con vuestra mirada, tan clásico no es. Son demasiado contemporáneos algunos detalles mecánicos, demasiado “preciso” y el sound de su carburador es demasiado ruidoso. Sorpresivamente se abre un mundo de contradicciones. El de los “históricos” del siglo XXI. Idénticos en todo a los automóviles originales de aquella época pero totalmente modernos.

Contemporary Classics in the true sense of the word, if we can play on a definition usually applied to contemporary models whose timeless lines mean they are destined immediately to assume the status of collectables. A niche within a niche, an expression of a vintage phenomenon that’s been appearing recently in every sector, from clothing to watches, design objects, furnishings, motor bikes, bikes and cars. So we’ve seen the appearance of special solutions, and those that until not long ago would be dismissed as “replicas” now enjoy renewed appreciation. Though the results are always flawless and surprising, there are manifold paths towards this point. It depends on money, but also how faithful you want to remain to the original. If you choose an iconic Shelby Cobra, for example, it’s possible to look to Shelby American, still actively perpetuating the legend of a 1960s classic that’s never been totally forgotten. To celebrate fifty years of operations, the Las Vegas-based company recently reproduced a limited number of models that could be ordered as kit cars or fully assembled, with fibreglass bodywork. A special-order option is also available for an aluminium body, just like the true old-school Shelbys. All authentic, because it’s all manufactured by the mother company. However, the Ford Mustangs reproduced by Revology, East Coast Americana, are 100% replica, built from the ground up but assembled using latest-generation Ford parts, which means spares can be found wherever the driver may be. It’s a very serious approach that makes the car an authentic - albeit unacknowledged - spinoff of the blue oval brand.
Contemporary Classic es su significado real, aquí se juega con una definición que normalmente es utilizada para identificar aquellos vehículos contemporáneos que pueden transformarse en automóviles de colección por su línea sin tiempos. Es una tendencia del momento. El nicho de un nicho, que monta el fenómeno del vintage el cual en los últimos tiempos ha invadido todos los sectores, desde la moda hasta la relojería, desde los objetos de diseño hasta la decoración, sin dejar de lado las motos, bicicletas y, por supuesto, los coches. Así es como nacieron en los últimos años soluciones ad hoc, que hace un tiempo atrás se las llamaba comúnmente “Réplica” (a menudo tenía una acepción negativa) y en cambio hoy gozan de una renovada consideración. Sin dejar de tener un resultado final impecable y sorprendente, según la capacidad de compra pero también del nivel de fidelidad que se desee conservar. Si optáis por ejemplo por el icono Shelby Cobra, podéis encargarlo a la Shelby American, activa aún hoy para seguir perpetuando el mito jamás olvidado de un clásico de los años 60. Para celebrar recientemente sus 50 años, la factory de Las Vegas ha reproducido un número limitado de modelos, que podéis comprar como kit-car o ya ensamblados, con su carrocería de fibra de vidrio o pedir especialmente que sea en aluminio como el de antes. Auténticos vehículos pues son producidos en la empresa matriz. El Ford Mustang rehecho por la Revology, de la East Coast estadounidense, son al 100% una réplica, totalmente montados y ensamblados con componentes Ford de última generación, favoreciendo un reemplazo eventual de los repuestos en cualquier lugar se encuentre. Being British, the Eagle company in East Sussex just had to focus their efforts on the E-type Jaguar, adopting a different solution. Their starting point is to take an original car and then lavish over 4,000 hours of work on it, enhancing the structural capacity of the chassis and body and updating electronics and mechanics so they perfectly reflect today’s standards and expectations. The original interior finishings are retained, as well as the number on the donor model’s chassis. Finally, California’s Singer Vehicle Design lies halfway between the two - its motto is “Restored, Reimagined, Reborn” and the philosophy behind it is very simple - start with model dating from 1989 to 1994, update the mechanics to today’s standards then take the car’s looks back in time to the 1960’s, all in line with the client’s specifications. And it’s a real pleasure to drive the roads in an unexpectedly brand new classic.

Porque el punto de llegada en este caso es un clásico original, en el que luego de 4 mil horas de trabajo, fueron implementados entre otros la capacidad estructural del chasis y de la carrocería renaciendo en una nueva vida perfectamente actualizada en la parte electrónica y mecánica de la era moderna. Conservando las terminaciones, el interior y el número del chasis del modelo “donante”. En el medio se encuentra el californiano Singer Vehicle Design. Su eslogan es “Restored, Reimagined, Reborne” y su filosofía es muy simple. A partir de un modelo del 1989 al 1994, lo actualizan mecánicamente a los estándares actuales, para luego llevarlos atrás en el tiempo desde un punto de vista estético hasta los años 60, teniendo en cuenta los gustos del cliente. Tan genial como pasear con un coche clásico, inesperadamente brand new.

At the tender age of six Salvador Dalí announced to his family that he wanted to be a chef when grew up. Things didn’t go quite as planned, but nevertheless in 1973 the surrealist genius wrote a cookbook, Les dîners de Gala. It was as elegant and provocative as only Marinetti’s Manuale di cucina futurista had proved to be. Originally published in a run of 400 copies, it now returns to the shelves published by Taschen. This lively, cheeky list of recipes, “Exclusively dedicated the pleasures of taste”, comprises 136 dishes inspired by the French culinary tradition, served during banquets held at Dalí ‘s home. The menu includes “Thousand year-old eggs”, “Veal cutlets stuffed with Snails”, “Frog pie” and “Toffee with pine cones”. The recipes are accompanied by luscious, sometimes surprising illustrations, alongside photos of those legendary evenings the artist loved to organise with his wife and muse, Gala, when guests frequently turned up in costume and wild animals ran freely across the tabletops.
Cuando tenía 6 años Salvador Dalí anunció a su familia que cuando fuera grande iba a ser cocinero. Su vida fue diferente pero en 1973 el genio del surrealismo escribió un libro de cocina, Les dîners de Gala. Un libro tan rebuscado y provocador como pudo llegar a ser el Manual de cocina futurista de Marinetti. Originalmente fue realizado en 400 copias y hoy vuelve a las librerías publicado por Taschen. Un recetario impertinente y audaz, «dedicado únicamente a los placeres del gusto», 136 platos que se inspiran a la tradición culinaria francesa, servidos durante los banquetes que Dalí organizaba en su casa: “huevos de mil años”, “chuletas de ternera rellenas de caracoles”, “pasteles de rana” y “toffee con piñas”. Las recetas están acompañadas por ilustraciones opulentas y estrafalarias junto a las fotografías de aquellas veladas legendarias que el artista amaba organizar junto a su esposa y musa Gala. You must have heard of thousand year old eggs, one of the jewels of Chinese cuisine. We aren’t saying this is the perfect version, we just want you to have fun following a recipe that can also be prepared in advance.
Seguramente conocéis estos huevos de mil años, una de las joyas de la cocina china. No nos jactamos de poder alcanzar su perfección, pero tratamos simplemente de ayudaros a seguir una receta divertida que tiene la ventaja de poder prepararla con antelación.
First boil the eggs for ten minutes in salted water. Plunge into cold water - this will make them easier to peel. To the same water you used to boil the eggs add cloves, sugar, vinegar, lots of Tabasco sauce, lemons and thyme. Boil for 15 minutes. Take off the heat and allow to steep for ten minutes in a small colander. Chop the onion into cubes and put them in a jar with the garlic. Add the peeled eggs and pour in the broth so the eggs are completely covered. Close the jar and store it on the bottom shelf of your fridge. Wait patiently for three weeks before opening. Serve. These eggs go well with cold meats and fish.
En primer lugar, cocinad los huevos en agua con sal durante diez minutos. Luego colocadlos bajo el agua helada, pues os facilitará descascararlos. En el mismo agua en que los huevos fueron cocidos, colocad los clavos, el azúcar, el vinagre, bastante salsa de Tabasco, los limones y el tomillo. Hervir durante 15 minutos. Apagad la hornalla, sumergid las bolsitas de té y dejad macerar durante 10 minutos en un colador. En un bote, colocad las cebollas cortadas en cubitos y los ajos. Agregad los huevos sin cáscara, y verted el caldo hasta que los huevos queden completamente cubiertos. Cerrad el envase y colocadlo en el estante inferior del refrigerador. Debéis tener paciencia durante tres semanas sin abrir el frasco, luego podéis servirlos. Los huevos de mil años van bien con embutidos y pescado.

The cinema, too, went through a period of surrealism in the 1970s - psychedelia was given free rein, with absurd situations, hallucinatory states and parallel worlds, fantastical settings intended to be absorbed rather than understood. The trend was ushered in by Alejandro Jodorowsky’s El Topo (1971) and The Holy Mountain (1973), generational cult movies with crazy, visionary scenes. The director, a writer and tarot expert, retained this view of reality through to his latest two works, The Dance of Reality (2013), an imaginary autobiography based on the book of the same name, where he turned to psychomagic to cure his depression, and Poesía sin fin (2016), an almost-true story of Alejandro’s sojourn in Santiago, Chile during the 1950s, and his yearning to become a poet against the wishes of his rigid, bourgeois father. The main character has a dreamlike vision where he literally chops down the family tree and takes shelter in a commune of avant-garde artists. Here he carries out his cultural revolution, surrounded by fantastical characters. Another masterpiece that drew inspiration from the unconscious through a symbology that was totally new to the big screen was La Grande Bouffe by Marco Ferreri (1973). In it, Ugo Tognazzi, Michel Piccoli, Marcello Mastroianni and Philippe Noiret portray four friends who gather together in a villa and decide to eat themselves to death in a critique of a small-minded, alienated bourgeoisie, and the cannibalism of a society in decline.
El cine también tuvo su época de surrealismo en los ‘70. Películas con alto tenor psicodélico, situaciones absurdas, estados alucinatorios, mundos paralelos, escenarios fantásticos cuya trama se debía absorber más que entender. El líder de esta tendencia fue Alejandro Jodorowsky con El topo (1970) y La montaña sagrada (1973), sus escenas delirantes y visionarias fueron un cult generacional. Una manera de ser que el director, escritor y experto de tarot jamás abandonó hasta en sus dos últimas obras: La danza de la realidad (2013), autobiografía imaginaria basada en el libro homónimo donde cuenta como se curó de la depresión gracias a la psicomagia y Poesía sin fin (1973), la historia casi real de los veinte años de Alejandro en Santiago de Chile en los ‘50 y su deseo de ser poeta contra el parecer rígido y burgués de su padre. El protagonista tiene una visión onírica donde literalmente cercena el árbol genealógico y lo repara en una comunidad de artistas vanguardistas, donde hará su revolución cultural rodeado por personajes fantásticos. Otra obra maestra cuya inspiración nace del inconsciente y con una simbología jamás vista en la gran pantalla fue La gran comilona de Marco Ferreri (1973) con Ugo Tognazzi, Michel Piccoli, Marcello Mastroianni, Philippe Noiret: cuatro amigos se encierran en una casa y deciden comer hasta morir. Es una crítica a una burguesía mezquina y enajenada y a la decadencia de una sociedad caníbal.

Less controversial but still marked by a visionary fascination is Terry Gilliam’s Brazil (1985), which the director originally wanted to call 1984 and a Half in homage to Orwell and Fellini. He eventually quoted the soundtrack, which accompanies the film in various versions, adding depth and impact to Gilliam’s brilliantly funny scenes, full of surreal irony. Another movie genius adored by cinephiles is David Lynch - after the global success of the cult TV series Twin Peaks, about a small town with unsettling secrets that had everyone glued to the screen in 1990, he doubled down on his surrealist credentials with the film Mulholland Drive in 2001. Fascinated by transcendental meditation, the acclaimed American producer/director invented a new language with this visionary masterpiece where dreams become nightmares, realities overlap and cancel each other out and nothing is ever as it seems. Drawing up a list of all the films made memorable by their surreal content would be an absorbing task, but one that must surely be mentioned is the movie inspired by a meeting between Walt Disney and Salvador Dalì. In 1945 they attempted to make an animated film together, with Disney as producer and Dalì, together with Disney studio artist John Hensch, creating the images. Eight months of intense labour were expended on the project, called Destino, but the war and unexpected financial difficulties brought it all to a premature end. It was down to Walt’s nephew Roy Edward to complete the film, after he rediscovered sketches and initial footage in 2000. The story features a young woman pursuing her lover, travelling through dreamlike spaces inhabited by strange creatures, liquid clocks, flying seashells, unworldly lights and constant enchantments. And in 2003, after deciphering the extraordinary storyboard, a cryptic trove of symbols and hidden references created by the two exceptional authors, the animators at Disney enabled Destino to enjoy its true destiny - as a masterpiece.

Disney producía mientras Dalí, junto a John Hench, guionista de los estudios, trabajaba en las imágenes. Ocho meses de intensa labor pero Destino - a causa de la guerra y de las dificultades económicas imprevistas – no llegó a la claqueta final. Lo completó y produjo el sobrino Roy Edward, quien en el 2000 encontró pruebas y bocetos. La protagonista de la historia es una joven en busca de su amor viajando en espacios oníricos, habitados por criaturas extrañas, relojes líquidos, conchas voladoras, luces espaciales y una sucesión de hechizos. Así en el 2003, luego de descifrar el increíble storyboard de estos dos artistas extraordinarios, pleno de símbolos y de indicaciones escondidas para descodificar, los animadores de Disney le dieron a Destino, su destino. Ser una obra maestra.

A midnight swim is fun, but it seems pretty tame compared to surfing at midnight, taking on waves that are felt rather than seen. The sea is already mysterious and full of potentially dangerous inhabitants in the daylight, so now picture it as a dark, menacing expanse. “How frightening this black sea is, moving restlessly in the night”, sings Paolo Conte. Si pensáis que el baño de mar a medianoche es una experiencia divertida, imaginaros qué sería surfear en esas horas. Enfrentar las olas “sintiéndolas” más que verlas, en un ambiente como el mar que cuando es visible es misterioso y está poblado de habitantes potencialmente peligrosos que empeora cuando es una mancha negra y amenazante. “¿Qué miedo nos puede dar ese mar oscuro que se mueve también de noche y jamás está quieto?” canta un poeta de la música como Paolo Conte.

Yet surfing in the moonlight is growing in popularity, beyond the restricted circle of enthusiastic initiates. But let’s take things one at a time. The sport was invented by the usual four young, surf-obsessed guys convinced of their youthful invulnerability. Some initial information - during the day every half-way decent spot is packed with surfers, while at night the waves still churn and roll, but the water is empty. The solution, of course, is to surf at night. It doesn’t matter if you can’t see a thing and the risk of shark attacks is much higher (predators are always more active at night, because they can remain unseen). The full moon acts as a spotlight and as for sharks, simply avoid the areas where they tend to gather and hope for the best. According to the statistics, you’re more likely to be struck by lightning than savaged by a hungry predator. That’s how night surfing started, and it soon gained in popularity even though objectively speaking it’s a dangerous pastime when enjoyed in a full-on, totally wild style without artificial lighting, just the full moon glinting on the breakers. That eerie illumination is important if you’re surfing in a bay where the shoreline is marked by sharp rocks rather than friendly sand. Alec Cooke, 59, better known as Ace Cool, a Hawaiian big surf star from the 1980s and 90s lost his life during a night surfing session at Waimea Bay, Hawaii. San Diego surfing legend Kenny Mann was found attached to what was left of his surfboard after going out to meet some old friends. But maybe that’s the best way to go someone who dedicated his life to riding the waves.

No interesa si no se ve nada y si además el riesgo es mayor por los ataques de los tiburones (los predadores son más activos de noche porque... no se ven). La luna llena puede ser el reflector y en cuanto a los tiburones... podéis evitar las zonas más frecuentadas y esperar buena suerte: mirando las estadísticas, es más probable que os caiga un rayo a que seáis atacados por un predador. Así fue en los comienzos. Y ha ido tomando pie cada vez más, a pesar de ser objetivamente peligroso, el total wild style: ninguna luz artificial, solamente la luna llena ilumina las rompientes, elemento importante sobre todo cuando se surfea en una bahía donde las piedras en lugar de las playas marcan el punto en el que termina el mar y comienza la tierra. Fortunately it’s not always so risky. Lights pointed at the waves, for example, can make things a lot safer, without ruining the fascination of the night-time darkness. This seductive backdrop has now become the ideal setting for competitions under the stars. L’Anglet Surf de Nuit di Biarritz, on France’s Atlantic coast, is now in its 22nd year. The lights on Jacksonville Beach Pier have illuminated the six professionals invited to the Red Bull Night Riders, in Florida, an event where the energy drink multinational set its seal on night-time surfing, and Fistral Beach, near Newquay on the Atlantic coast of Cornwall, hosts a two-day Night Surf festival. But some are aimed at a wider audience - in the last week of September, Christchurch, New Zealand, hosts Cuba Night Surf, with electric lighting and open to all. On Bali, the Komune Resort has installed a series of lamps on the beach to light up the seafront, allowing just six surfers per night to continue enjoying the island’s spectacular waves. Some even light the interior of the wave itself, giving surfers the impression they’re riding a cascade of light. The people behind this are the creators of Wavegardens, water parks where visitors can surf on artificial waves. There are two parks at the moment, one in Wales and one in Texas, but the company plans to open a further fifteen around the world. And as if that weren’t enough, it’s now possible to mount LED lights on your board or wetsuit. The nights are becoming even more surfer-friendly.

Es el caso de las competiciones bajo las estrellas. El Anglet Surf de Nuit de Biarritz, en la costa atlántica francesa, ha llegado a su 22° edición. Los reflectores en Jacksonville Beach Pier iluminaron a los seis profesionales invitados al Red Bull Night Riders, en Florida, evento en el que la multinacional de las bebidas ha puesto su sello en el surf nocturno. La luz eléctrica ha alumbrado los batientes del Night Surf de Fistral, sobre la costa atlántica de Cornualles. Pero también están aquellos destinados a un público más amplio. En Christchurch, en Nueva Zelandia, se realiza el Cuba Night Surf la última semana de septiembre, iluminados por luces artificiales y abierto a todos. En Bali, el Komune Resort ha instalado en la playa unos faros que iluminan el frente del mar para que solamente seis surfistas por noche puedan continuar a disfrutar de las olas espectaculares de la isla. Pero siempre hay más: no solamente se ilumina la superficie de las olas sino también dentro de ellas para dar la sensación a aquellos que surfean de montar una cascada de luz. Así lo hicieron los creadores de Wavegarden, parques acuáticos donde se practica surf gracias a las olas artificiales (hay dos: uno en Galles y uno en Texas y en los próximos dos años se abrirán 15 centros más en todo el mundo). Y si todo esto no fuera suficiente están los que inventaron los LEDs para las tablas o los trajes. En resumen: la noche es cada vez más amiga de los surfistas.

Wagyu Many dishes at the Blue Marlin Ibiza are prepared with Wagyu meat, a beef type native to Japan. Its high quality is greatly appreciated for its taste, tenderness and juiciness. At the restaurant you can order it in hamburger form with Gruyère cheese, homemade pear mustard, umami mayonnaise and black truffle or as bone-in ribeye or sirloin steak accompanied by Padrón peppers. It’s also possible to order a plate of Wagyu ham prepared in the same way as Iberian ham. En Blue Marlin Ibiza hay muchas preparaciones con carne de Wagyu que es una raza originaria de Japón. Su alta calidad es muy apreciada por sus características de sabor, ternura y jugosidad. En el restaurante se puede pedir en version hamburguesa con queso Gruyère, mostaza casera de pera, mahonesa umami y trufa negra o un chuletón o solomillo con hueso acompañados con pimientos del Padrón. Chilean Sea Bass Lubina Chilena The sea bass is marinated in miso for three days. Miso is a paste made from soybean seeds, cereals and sea salt fermented with koji fungus. It is considered to be a healing food in Asia and for centuries has been the favourite ingredient of the Japanese imperial family and samurai. This dish is served on bamboo leaves as they have antibacterial properties, making them ideal for fish. It is accompanied by fennel and apple pickled in rice vinegar. La lubina estĂĄ marinada en miso durante tres dĂas. El miso es una pasta hecha con semillas de soja, cereales y sal marina fermentada con el hongo koji. Es considerado un alimento curativo en Asia y ha sido durante siglos, el elemento preferido por la familia imperial japonesa y los samurais. The preparation of sushi is like Japanese calligraphy - to give shape to a dish it is necessary to concentrate and create harmony, balance and evenness between the elements.

At Blue Marlin Ibiza we have Walter Sidoravicius, who oversees sushi preparation at the Cala Jondal and the Blue Marlin Ibiza Marina. He recently returned from Japan, where he studied with the master Kazuhiro Yokoyama. He has also been learning new techniques and perfecting old ones to enhance the menu with a selection of gastronomic options that cannot be found in any other restaurant on Ibiza.
En Blue Marlin Ibiza tenemos a Walter Sidoravicius como responsable de la elaboración del sushi que se sirve en Cala Jondal y Blue Marlin Ibiza Marina. Recientemente ha regresado de Japón donde aprendió junto al maestro Kazuhiro Yokoyama y donde ha estado formándose en nuevas técnicas y perfeccionando las antiguas, para sumar a la carta una selección de opciones gastronómicas que no se sirven en ningún otro restaurante de Ibiza.
“We work with live eels, clean them and cut them with a triangular knife called a Deba. We cook them in broth of water, soy, sake and mirin”, says Walter, who has been developing this Japanese speciality in cities like London, Sydney, Tokyo, San Sebastian, New York and Marrakech. This year’s menu offers new dishes and ingredients the chef discovered during his stay in the two-Michelin Star Aponiente restaurant in Cádiz.
“Trabajamos con anguilas vivas, las limpiamos y cortamos con un cuchillo triangular llamado Deba. Las cocinamos en un caldo que lleva agua, soja, sake y mirin” cuenta Walter quien ha estado elaborando esta especialidad japonesa en varias ciudades como Londres, Sidney, Tokyo, San Sebastián, Nueva York y Marrakech. En la carta de este año podemos encontrar preparaciones e ingredientes nuevos, aprendidos por el chef durante su estancia en el restaurante Aponiente de Cádiz que cuenta con dos estrellas Michelin.

Walter started preparing sushi at an early age in his native Venezuela. Over the years and with his accumulated experience, he eventually entered a world-wide sushi competition - World Sushi Cup Japan 2014 - coming eighth among the twenty best sushi chefs in the world. In addition, he also has gained certification from the World Sushi Skill Certification Association, awarded by the AJSA (All Japan Sushi Association) Sushi Skills Institute in Tokyo. He is currently a professor at the Basque Culinary Centre in San Sebastian, where he teaches sushi for professional practitioners of this culinary speciality. “At Blue Marlin Ibiza we use Bluefin tuna of excellent quality that has been caught in a way that ensures it is always fresh. The rice is Kagayaki, also of very good quality, which comes from California. We take great care with our preparation techniques, soaking, mixing it in the hangiri and keeping it at the right temperature so that it reaches the customer in the an ideal condition,” he explains. One of his star dishes is the Mediterranean sashimi lobster. This is blanched in sake and mirin and served in an ice bowl to keep it fresh on the table. According to the sushi chef, six different types of seaweed are used for these dishes (rolls and seaweed salad). Three of these are Kombu seaweed, very rich in umami, considered the fifth flavour by the Japanese. “We take great care in the selection and preparation of the products we use, like red prawns and Ibizan crab, Hamachi or lemon fish from Japan and salmon roe carefully washed, cured and marinated in white soybeans,” Walter concludes.
Walter comenzó a preparar sushi desde muy temprana edad en su país natal, Venezuela. Con los años y la experiencia acumulada, acabó participando en la competencia mundial de sushi -World Sushi Cup Japan 2014- obteniendo el octavo puesto entre los 20 mejores sushi chef del mundo. Además, es un cocinero diplomado por el World Sushi skill Certificación Association que otorga AJSA Sushi Skills Institute en Tokyo y actualmente es profesor del Basque Culinary Center de San Sebastián donde imparte clases de sushi para profesionales de esta especialidad gastronómica. “El atún que se utiliza en Blue Marlin Ibiza es atún bluefin de excelente calidad y pescado de una forma que garantiza su sostenibilidad. El arroz es Kagayaki, también de una calidad muy buena y procede de California. Cuidamos mucho su técnica y el proceso de elaboración, el remojo, el mezclarlo en el hangiri y su conservación en la temperatura adecuada para que llegue al cliente lo mejor posible”, explica. Uno de los platos estrella es el sashimi de langosta del Mediterráneo que se escalda en sake y mirin y que se sirve en un bol de hielo para mantener su frescura en la mesa. Según nos relata el sushi chef, para los platos (rolls y ensalada de algas) se utilizan seis tipos de algas distintas de las cuales tres variedades son algas Kombu muy ricas en umami, considerado el quinto sabor por los japoneses. “Tenemos una rigurosa selección y manipulación de los productos que utilizamos como las gambas rojas y cigalas ibicencas, Hamachi o pez limón de Japón y huevas de salmón cuidadosamente lavadas, curadas y marinadas en soja blanca”, concluye Walter.

Valentín is the longest-standing resident at Blue Marlin Ibiza, and is an icon of an electronic scene that represents his native Ibiza in all the continents he’s invited to play in. We’ll start with the latest of his activities, the release of his “Atlantis EP” on 20th June with Behrouz’s new label “Do not sit on the furniture records”. “A track called ‘Infinity’ that’s included on my ‘Atlantis’ album has been selected by Pete Tong for his ‘All Gone Pete Tong’ compilation”. The sound that Valentín produces and plays holds a secret - it is born from within this artist, someone who throughout his career has incorporated into his sets his journeys and life experiences that have shaped him, becoming someone whose music is authentic, personal and bursting with energy. Sharing booths in Ibiza with big names in the electronic scene also got him noticed, and he started receiving invitations to various festivals like Burning Man, BPM in Mexico and this year in Portugal. As a resident DJ in WooMoon, he finds himself in a period of permanent sound exploration, with a uniqueness that is having an impact in different countries. luca garaboni house masTer Luca is special, and that can be heard in his music. He started his musical career in the 1980’s on the nightclub scene at Jesolo (Venice, Italy). What changed his life was discovering the vinyl Revelation - First Power. “It enabled me to change my way of conceiving music at only 17 years of age”. With his calm temperament and sincere gaze, he arrived at Blue Marlin Ibiza this year to make his residency the perfect setting for giving life to new productions full of colour, deep house sounds and classic musical touches. Throughout his career two of his mentors have acted as references - Kerri Chandler and Master at Work, although he confesses that in his home, American music was always a source of inspiration. “I always create what I like, inspiration comes from everything I hear and see, and then I try to communicate all those experiences to the audience when I play.” Luca Garaboni is Italian, a father with a family and a DJ who carries not only innovative sounds in his record case but also long experience in clubs and on dance floors across the whole of Europe. Anyone who wants to enjoy his intricate world of sound has only to go along to Cala Jondal and let Luca share a piece of his wonderful essence. Luca es un hombre especial y eso se traslada a su música. Comenzó su carrera musical en los años 80 en la nocturna escena de Jesolo (Venecia, Italia). Oscar Akagy is synonymous with rhythm and musical elegance. “My sessions always have a particular feeling to them, from house to refined techno and something pleasing to the ears, passing through melodic themes and some vocals, with a common thread that is always designed so that the clients enjoy the moment to the maximum in Blue Marlin Ibiza”. Oscar tells of how this year he has closed dates in very important festivals, sharing the booth with such exceptional artists as Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin and Joseph Capriati. Akagy is a versatile artist who can set an afternoon in the beach house to music just as easily as he can warm up for Dennis Ferrer or Pete Tong on Sundays in Cala Jondal. He has recently finished editing a record of his track House Of House on Mihalis Safras’ Material Series label. Restless, a lover of music and friends, Oscar has an adventurous spirit capable of making you dance until you can’t remember how you came to meet your own limits. paola poleTTo powerful woman “On the dance floor it’s the girls who are the link between my work and the environment where I’m playing. If they are dancing then I’m doing my set well”. Paola is that straightforward and clear - a young Italian woman with a long career as a DJ that began with her passion for vinyl in her native Turin almost 20 years ago. In 1995 she travelled to New York to visit a producer friend who connected her with the industry. She would later return to play for Erick Morillo and for the Billboard Conference. After a period in London she was invited to Ibiza in the summer of 1997 to perform at the legendary Space, as well as at Pachá, where she made her debut as a female DJ alongside Pippi, a frequent resident at the Cherry nightclub. Never standing still for long, she alternated winters between Milan, Naples and New York, but in summer her place was always in Ibiza. Her first production was signed by Roger Sanchez. Her most recent with ‘Viva Music’ - Steve Lawler’s record label, as well as Loco Dice’s ‘Desolat Music Group’ - with whom Paola maintains a friendship and who taught her discipline and passion for music. This year Poletto debuts with her residency at Blue Marlin Ibiza, where every time she climbs up to the booth, a certain feminine power draws out a sound from within her that could only be interpreted by the soul. “En la pista de baile son las chicas el punto de relación entre mi trabajo y el ambiente donde estoy pinchando. Si ellas bailan yo estoy haciendo bien mi set” así de directa y clara es Paola, una joven mujer italiana con una larga trayectoria como Dj que empezó con su pasión por los vinilos en su Torino natal hace casi 20 años. En 1995 viajó a Nueva York para visitar a un amigo productor que la conectó con la industria donde más tarde volvería a pinchar para Erick Morillo y para el Bilboard Conference. Luego de una etapa en Londres, la invitan a Ibiza en el verano del 97 para actuar en el legendario Space, además de Pachá donde debutó como Dj mujer junto a Pippi, el residente habitual de la discoteca de las cerezas. Sin parar nunca de moverse, fue alternando inviernos entre Milán, Nápoli y New York pero en verano el sitio nunca dejó de ser Ibiza. Su primera produción fue firmada por Roger Sanchez. La más reciente, con Viva Music, el sello di Steve Lawler, además del label Desolat, de Locodice, con quien Paola mantiene una amistad y de quien aprendió disciplina y pasión por la música. Este año Poletto debuta con su residencia en Blue Marlin Ibiza donde cada vez que se sube a la cabina, un cierto poder femenino saca de su interior un sonido que solo puede ser interpretado con el alma.

Imposing order on existence, artificially fragmenting it in order to control it. It’s an illusion humankind has sought to perfect since our very beginnings, obsessed with the idea of bending time, capturing it in a predefined, prefabricated structure made up of years, months, weeks and days. Then broken up into smaller segments, hours, minutes and seconds. Finally, in search of an even more total dominance, we created an instrument that could give its wearer a further, ephemeral sensation of control. The watch. It was a shame, though, that once the result was achieved, the same creators realised that defeat had been on the cards from the very beginning. So, faced by this evidence, it was accepted that compromises would have to be made. The most skilful, creative watchmakers began literally to play with time, breaking out of the traditional limits defined by the use of hands to indicate the passing hours, now exploring different, revolutionary paths. One important example is the Dietrich Perception, a timepiece with “relative” seconds and “vagabond” hours. It’s sheer genius, because it remains true to the logic that says in our perception of real, everyday life, some moments will fade in an instant, while others will last an eternity. Some are surprising, like the Legacy Machine N°1 final edition by MB&f, which confounds expectations with its double dial designed to make room for the totally autonomous expression of local time and the time at home, in line with its GMT essence. Or paradoxical, like the Hautlence Playground Labyrinth. Worn on the wrist, but not a watch. No longer a timepiece, but a pastime.
Ordenar la existencia. Fragmentarla artificialmente para encontrar la manera de dominarla. Una ilusión que el hombre ha buscado siempre, obsesionado por la idea de doblegar al tiempo, de enjaularlo en una estructura prefabricada, predefinida. Hecha de años, de meses, de semanas y de días. Y cada vez más pequeña de horas, minutos y segundos. Para luego aumentar la dosis, al no estar satisfecho con los resultados, creando un instrumento capaz de aportar a quien lo lleva, una sensación efímera de comando. El reloj. Lástima que una vez que hubo logrado el resultado, ese mismo hombre se dio cuenta que no había podido vencer aquella batalla en que el éxito ya estaba asignado en los comienzos. Por ello, delante de la evidencia, no le quedó otra opción que hacer concesiones. Los relojeros más excéntricos, hábiles y creativos comenzaron literalmente a jugar con el tiempo. Saliendo de los esquemas rígidos de una referencia clásica, hecha por manecillas, para explorar caminos alternativos y revolucionarios. El ejemplo más significativo es el Dietrich Perception, un guardatiempo dotado de segundos “relativos” y de horas “vagabundas”. Genial porque es fiel a su lógica sobre la percepción de la vida real, la de todos los días, donde aparentemente hay momentos destinados a consumirse en un instante y otros en cambio duran una eternidad. Sorprendente como el Legacy Machine N°1 Final Edition de MB&F, que desorienta por su doble esfera, en realidad pensada para dar espacio a la hora local, coherente con su esencia de GMT. O paradójico como el Hautlence Playground Labyrinth. Se lleva en la muñeca pero no es un reloj. No es más un marcatiempo sino un pasatiempo.

Hybrids of wolves and humans, anthropomorphic birds and lizards with arms populate the imaginary bestiary painted by Leonora Carrington (1917-2011). Born in the UK, her life was as eventful and intense as her works. A rebellious spirit, she was expelled from her convent school and quickly fell in love with surrealist art, especially the works of Max Ernst. She then met him in 1937 at a party in London, and the pair embarked on an all-consuming love affair. The powerful attraction they both felt, despite a twenty-six year difference in age, led Ernst to leave his wife and take Leonora with him to Paris, a city whose artistic circle included artists like Picasso, Bunuel, Dalí, Man Ray and Breton. With stories like sitting with her feet soaking in mustard in a swanky restaurant, or cutting her guests’ hair as they slept and serving it to them in an omelette for breakfast, but above all through her extravagant works, rich in symbolism and freedom, Carrington was the last great surrealist. Her mad, enthralling story was recently told by British journalist Johanna Moorhead in The Surreal Life of Leonora Carrington, published by Virago. The centre of this town, fewer than 80 kilometres from Medellin, creates a stunning psychedelic effect, combined with a more traditional colonial appeal.

The Rock of Guatapé
Perfectly reflecting the country’s spirited character, Guatapé offers an intricate kaleidoscope of cobbled streets lined with houses painted in bright colours that would bring joy to the heart of anyone who creates graphics and cartoons. Decorated with artistic murals depicting the endeavours of the people who have left an indelible mark on the town or illustrating ancient beliefs and religious rituals, the buildings create a fantastical illusion of a magical world, full of energy and optimism. The typical decorations, called “zocalòs”, and the geometrical or floral patterns they are comprised of, create a scenario that exaggerates reality and forms a backdrop for nature to paint scenes with vivid sunlight streaming down from the clear skies that arch overhead for most of the year, perhaps in recognition of the colourful rainbow charm that the people of the town seem to have at their fingertips. This marvel enchants the many visitors, also attracted by the breathtaking views to be had from the summit of El Peñon, a mysterious quartz and granite monolith that towers 200 metres above the ground, just one kilometre from the town. No one has yet discovered the origins of this enigmatic pillar of rock. Visitors can scale it by climbing the 675 steps to the top, 2,100 metres above sea level. Here they will be rewarded by views across green landscapes stretching from horizon to horizon, and a lovely artificial lake with islands scattered across its surface. It’s possible to explore it on a jetski rented from the Aquatic Center, which also

Algunas pinturas son verdaderos murales artísticos que ilustran las hazañas de aquellas personas que dejaron su huella en la historia de la ciudad o representan creencias y rituales religiosos. Todos los edificios crean la ilusión fantástica de estar en un mundo mágico lleno de energía y optimismo. Las típicas decoraciones, llamadas zócalos, y la abundancia de dibujos geométricos o florales que las componen, forman un amplísimo escenario junto a las imágenes sugestivas naturales creadas por la luz intensa del sol, el cielo límpido la mayor parte del año y por una naturaleza que parece que recompensara al espíritu colorido de los habitantes del lugar. Una maravilla que enriquece la mirada de los turistas quienes llegan atraídos por el impresionante panorama que ofrece El Peñón, una misteriosa formación monolítica de cuarzo y granito de 200 metros, a 1 km de la ciudad, de la cual aún no ha sido descubierto su origen. Luego de haber subido sus 644 peldaños que os llevarán a la cima de 2.100 metros sobre el nivel del mar, podréis admirar un valle verde infinito y un bellísimo lago artificial con sus numerosas islas. offers facilities for a series of sports to enjoy on the spectacular archipelago. Founded in 1811 by Francisco Giraldo Jiménez, Guatapé also has a concrete approach to its communications, using drawings instead of written words, like the bread denoting the bakers’ shop, the children indicating the presence of a school, a classic Lambretta scooter outside the garage and a choir of angels for the church, la Iglesia de Nuestra Senora del Carmen. The church - painted in vivid colours, of course - contains some lovely woodwork, and is well worth a visit. A bus service running every twenty minutes connects Medellin to Guatapé, where visitors can find local products like ceramics and musical instruments, plus the region’s fi nest coffee - best enjoyed, after the obligatory photo opportunities, in the Plazuela de los Zocalos. The aperitif of the moment, though, is beer and mango in the town’s most famous street, the calle del Recuerdo. A walk through the town centre is a joyful experience, as everything - walls, windows, stairs and roofs - is painted in incredible colours, appearing one after the other in no apparent order but each one in harmony with its neighbours. It’s as if before deciding on the various colours the townsfolk, with typical Colombian enterprise, worked it all out on a giant 3D rendering. After a tour of Colombia, which now has a great deal to offer the traveller, a colourful stay in Guatapé will provide the best possible conclusion to the journey.
