Dear Bishop Montgomery Community,
As I reflect on the stories highlighted in this issue of the BMHS Magazine, I am reminded of the words of St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians: Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. Our Bishop Montgomery community is, at its heart, a living example of that truth.
Every day, I see how our students, parents, alumni, faculty, and friends embody what it means to be the body of Christ, each offering unique gifts, talents, and support that together create something greater than any one of us alone. Whether it is through academics, athletics, service, or prayer, we are united in our mission to form young people who are rooted in faith and prepared to meet the challenges of the world with courage, integrity, and compassion.
In these pages, you will read about the many ways our community continues to thrive. These stories are reminders that Bishop Montgomery is more than a school; it is a family bound by faith, tradition, and the shared desire to Be the Best Knights We Can Be
I am deeply grateful for the countless ways you give of yourselves, through your time, your prayers, and your generosity. Your support sustains our mission and ensures that our students not only receive an excellent education, but also experience the joy of belonging to a community that believes in them.
Thank you for walking with us, for celebrating our successes, and for trusting us with the formation of the next generation of Knights. Please know of my prayers for you and your families.
With gratitude and faith,
Michele A. Starkey, EdD, ‘85 Principal
Hpe Lives Here
The Hope Squad is transforming the way students see themselves — and each other.
Walking the halls of Bishop Montgomery on any given school day, it is impossible to miss the smiling faces of students. Their joy fills the campus, creating an atmosphere that is both noticeable and contagious. This energy makes Bishop Montgomery a place where students feel safe and supported, and a place they consider a second home. While our students ARE happy, they are also human— and with that come the challenges and obstacles that every one of us faces in life. This year, Bishop Montgomery has embraced a nationally recognized program to provide additional care and support for students navigating mental health challenges. Enter Hope Squad, Bishop Montgomery’s newest program dedicated to supporting the mental well-being of every student.
In her diary, Anne Frank wrote, “Where there's hope, there's life. It fills us with fresh courage and makes us strong again.” At Bishop Montgomery, where there is hope, there is a squad of students, ready to help their peers who are in need of finding the strength to overcome the challenges they face. And the challenges, it seems, are many. When speaking with teachers and students about the most common factors that negatively impact the mental health of teens, the same answers keep coming to the forefront: social media pressure to compare oneself to others, anxiety and stress about academics and grades, feelings of low self-esteem when not meeting these expectations, and balancing all the competing demands of one's life. “The most important thing to help students have positive mental health
peer-to-peer support network. Sometimes young people are more likely to open up to a classmate than an adult. Having trained, caring peers who can recognize warning signs and connect students to help is invaluable.”
"I want my classmates to always feel cared for and to not be afraid to reach out for help."

is to have someone they can talk to about anything,” says Mike Mortiz, a BMHS teacher and one of its Hope Squad moderators. This, in essence, is at the heart of Hope Squad.
Founded a few decades ago at a high school in Utah, Hope Squad is a suicide prevention program, but it is really much more than that. The organization’s purpose is “to foster human connection, community and hope” while “elevating mental well-being through peer-to-peer suicide prevention programming.” Recognized by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center’s Best Practices Registry, the peer-to-peer model "empowers members to intentionally reach out to peers and become instruments of change." The program aims to train students to recognize the signs and symptoms of when a peer may be hurting and be a bridge for support. Today, Hope Squads are in thousands of schools across the United States and Canada and their programming is promoting a more positive school climate for hundreds of thousands of young students.
When Dr. Michele Starkey ‘85 began her tenure as principal last year, establishing a Hope Squad chapter on Bishop’s campus was a top priority. For Starkey, it was not just important to have Hope Squad on campus, it was personal. “For me, this is especially important because I lost my brother to suicide in 2013,” she says. “I never want any of our students to feel like they have no other option or no one who understands what they are going through. The greatest advantage of having Hope Squad is that it gives students a safe
McGoldrick ’01, and Moritz—and students who were nominated by both teachers and peers. The Hope Squad members will be easily recognizable on campus by their specially designed gold polos. In addition to being available for individual peer support, the Hope Squad will strengthen the school’s overall commitment to mental health by complementing Outreach Concern, the professional counselors available to students daily. While Hope Squad members are trained to listen and provide support, they will refer classmates to Outreach Concern for more serious matters that require professional guidance. The group also plans to host activities and events on campus that not only
raise awareness of their mission but also provide fun, community-building opportunities for all students to enjoy.
For Choi, McGoldrick and Moritz, the decision to be faculty moderators was simple: they wanted to see the program thrive on campus and they felt inspired to help students in any way they can. “From the moment I heard about it, I kept thinking of several students who would be very interested in joining,” says Choi, who teaches Honors and AP Biology. “These are students who are interested in careers in psychology, who are already warm, welcoming, and empathetic to their peers. I knew Hope Squad would benefit from their involvement, and I knew it would give them an opportunity to use their gifts to support their classmates.”
For both McGoldrick and Moritz, having experience helping family and friends through difficult times inspired them to be part of Bishop’s Hope Squad. Although not counselors by trade, they saw an opportunity to use their experience to help students. “I have always been passionate
about building a supportive school community and I have experience listening to friends during tough times,” says McGoldrick, who teaches history and Economics. “I knew I could help create a safe space for students to feel heard and guide them to the help they need, aligning with Hope Squad’s mission to reduce stigma and foster hope.” Like Starkey, the topic of suicide hits close to home for Moritz and it motivates him to be a positive force. “My wife's first husband sadly died by suicide,” says Moritz, a member of the English department. “My wife and stepdaughter have
to navigate the stigma of suicide every day, so I want to do what I can to help other young people and their families work through similarly difficult situations and being a Hope Squad member helps me accomplish my aims.”
The key for Hope Squad’s success on campus and in the lives of young people is in the strength of its student leaders. And Bishop Montgomery has a group of exemplary young men and women ready to lead and, more importantly, ready to listen. The students who were ultimately chosen to be Bishop’s first student leaders completed extensive training through Hope Squad’s team of experts and they bring with them a variety of skills and experiences. “We were very careful to pick students from all walks of life,” says Moritz. “We selected students from a variety of grade levels and social circles to make the decision to approach and talk to a Hope Squad member as stress-free as possible. Seeing the entire student body represented in Hope Squad will be key in promoting positive mental health.”
When asked why they wanted to be Hope Squad leaders, the students stressed a desire to help those who might be feeling lonely or uncomfortable expressing their feelings by helping them understand that they are important, wanted and not alone in their thoughts. These peer-to-peer connections, according to McGoldrick, “help

academic pressure or social media comparison.” Luke Banfield ‘27, a junior at BMHS, wanted to be on Hope Squad so he could be that person who can help his peers who might be experiencing those feelings of isolation or loneliness. “I care about helping others and making sure that everybody knows that they matter,” says Banfield. “A big advantage of having Hope Squad here at BMHS is that all students will know that there is [a peer] always ready to talk to them and give them support.”

"The biggest advantages of hope squad is helping [students] realize that they have a community around them to help support them".
Selma
Mahoney '28
Cultivating empathy in schools is one of the key objectives of Hope Squad. This is one of the tenets that drew sophomores Jagger Jordan ‘28 and Selma Mahoney ‘28 to be student leaders. They believe that when students are struggling with their anxieties or fears they often do so in silence, so finding a peer to confide in, who might be experiencing similar feelings, will encourage them to share more. “I know that students feel the need to belittle their problems because they are not acknowledged or they believe that everyone has to face them, so they just accept it and struggle silently,” says Jordan. Both sophomores agree that one of the greatest benefits of having a Hope Squad chapter at Bishop will be helping classmates understand that they are never alone. “I think the biggest advantage of the Hope Squad is helping [students] realize that they are not alone and that they have a community around them to help support them,” adds Mahoney.
When asked about their goals for the inaugural year of Hope Squad, moderators and students shared a common vision: building a student-led support system and normalizing the act of seeking help. "I think Hope Squad
will create a dialogue and openness about mental health,” explains Choi. That same commitment to openness inspired senior Andrea Rodriguez ’26 to join the group. “I want to be someone that people can come to for listening without judgment and be a pillar in their life to remind them that they are not alone,” she says. “Being part of the Hope Squad gives me an opportunity to make a difference at school, which most people find to be a second home.”
At its core, Hope Squad represents more than just a program—it is a movement of compassion, connection, and courage. By empowering students to look out for one another and by reminding the Bishop Montgomery community that no one ever has to face life’s struggles alone, Hope Squad is adding to a culture where empathy and hope flourish. As the first student leaders begin their work, their impact will shape a generation of students who know the strength that comes from leaning on each other. In a world where challenges are inevitable, Bishop's Hope Squad stands as a beacon, ensuring that “where there’s hope, there’s life” and there is always someone ready to listen.
Arya Mostofi '25 is Making a Difference at BMHS and Beyond
When Bishop Montgomery junior Jaiden Chase ’27 enters a room, it is impossible not to feel the optimism and hope that radiate from him. Teachers describe Jaiden as engaging, bright, energetic, hopeful, curious, and determined—and within minutes of speaking with him, all of those qualities shine through. Whether he is talking about turtles, his favorite animal, his love of music and arts and crafts, the activities he is involved in both inside and outside of school, or what he enjoys most about attending Bishop Montgomery, Jaiden’s enthusiasm is unmistakable. Yet above all, the things that stand out most about him are his altruistic nature and his deep sense of gratitude.
In addition to being an excellent student, Jaiden is involved in a variety of activities both inside and outside the walls of BMHS, and he confidently describes himself as “a busy person.” At BMHS, he is a member of Thunder By Knight, the school’s band; he is a member of Concordia Club, the longest running service club on campus; and this year he is the founder and Co-President of the Unity & Crafts Club. His passions outside of school include sewing quilts that he donates to orphanages and making stuffed animals for children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA).
At the heart of everything he does— and who he is as a person—is his genuine desire to help others. This is evident in how he channels his love for arts and crafts into something far more meaningful than a simple hobby. He creates quilts, blankets, stuffed animals, coasters, and other handmade items to bring comfort and joy to those around him, often as a way to lift someone’s spirits or ease their stress. One of the most impactful ways he has shared his talents is by making stuffed animals for children at St. Jude’s and CHLA. Recently, he even purchased a sewing machine to make his process more efficient. “The doctors at these hospitals give so much to help that it inspires me to want to help,” he says. “If I can help take a little bit of the pain away from these kids by making them a stuffed animal, then I call that a success and it brings me joy to see someone happy when I give them something I made.”
When talking with him, it is clear that he does not go out of his way to help others for any sort of adulation or recognition. He uses his talents for the sole reason of making people’s lives better, and that is not lost on his classmates, teachers or anyone who meets him. He often makes things for his peers or teachers and even has commissioned a few items. “What often strikes me about Jaiden is his deep care for others,” says Sierra Evans ‘10, his American Literature teacher. “I started hearing students check in about the progress on things like their hippo and found out that, on top of a rigorous course schedule, Jaiden is working on craft projects - constantly,” she continues. “He makes little plush animals, quilts, and anything that will present a new challenge. The thing is, though, they are always for other people. I think he pursues projects that will make people feel like someone out there really thought about them. Last week, I jokingly said that I wanted a coaster for my desk at school of Hester Prynne's A from The Scarlet Letter and Jaiden immediately pulled out a notecard and asked for specifications. He makes it his business to show others that they are appreciated.”
hand-made close to 800 crocheted hearts that were attached to cards and distributed to hospitalized children and residents of nursing homes. For Laura Fabbri, the Concordia Club moderator, and Jaiden’s Spanish teacher last year, Jaiden is a gift from God who “contributes to countless projects with creativity and heart.” Fabbri is equally impressed with Jaiden in the classroom as well. “He consistently participates, offers accurate answers, and brings a positive energy that encourages his classmates to engage and excel alongside him,” says Fabbri. “His dedication, kindness, and leadership make him not just an outstanding student, but a true inspiration to everyone around him. Jaiden doesn’t just make a difference, he leaves a lasting mark on every community he touches.”
In his Psychology class this year, taught by Loreen Trevino ‘83, Jaiden has taken on the role as “plant manager” for the purpose of making the classroom a place for students to call home. Many of his teachers, including Trevino, speak about how Jaiden is always searching for ways to make the surroundings as pleasant as can be, including tending to the plants in Trevino’s room. “He is the one who checks that the plants have enough water and minerals because he says the plants add a good ambiance for our learning environment,” she says. “The students agree and they thank him for helping our classroom feel welcoming.”
In his three years at BMHS, Jaiden has made a tremendous impact on the entire community, but he almost never made it to campus. As an eighth grader at Manhattan Beach Middle School, he wanted to go to Mira Costa with his friends. His desire to go to BMHS was basically non-existent. One Saturday, his mom took him to get a haircut, but instead of heading home after his appointment, she took him to Bishop to visit campus on the day of open house. Still not convinced, Jaiden’s mom signed him up to shadow a Bishop student for morning classes that December and something clicked. Citing the experience of attending classes and meeting students and teachers, Jaiden had a newfound desire to come to BMHS. “Something inside of me told me ‘this is the place where I want to go to high school’,” he says. “I like how BMHS stands as a community and is united by faith. I fully believe the right decision was for me to come to Bishop Montgomery.”
As a member of Concordia Club since his freshman year, Jaiden has brought his warmth and enthusiasm to every service project completed by the club. Since last year, he estimates that he has
Jaiden’s story is a reminder that kindness is contagious and that one person’s creativity can ripple outward to touch countless lives. Whether he is leading a club, crafting gifts by hand, or simply brightening someone’s day with his smile, he embodies the spirit of Bishop Montgomery—faith, service, and community. As he continues his journey, there is no doubt that Jaiden will keep inspiring others to use their own gifts to make the world a better, brighter place.
Cultivating Unlimited Potential
Rick Perez '02 helps clients unlock abilities and amplify strengths
By the time he was in the third grade, the career path for Rick Perez ‘02 was already in place. He did not know it at the time, but his experiences growing up sharing homes with people with developmental disabilities would shape his values and what he found was most important in life. There were times in high school and college where his dreams for a career would take him in a different direction, but the influences early in his life were too strong to ignore. Helping others live a better and fuller life was his passion and his calling. It was a call he answered.
When he was nine, Perez’ parents opened the doors of their personal residence in Hawthorne and developed a group home for women with intellectual disabilities. As the family began helping more and more people, the need to expand became obvious. Soon, there were two homes, one for males and one for females. As residents came in, they would get a room and Perez started to become an advocate for his housemates. He often found himself negotiating with his mother for extra desserts for the residents. The seeds for his career were being planted and nurtured.
While a student at Bishop Montgomery, Perez was a three-year varsity baseball player who was known for being versatile. At the varsity level, he played almost every position and could always be counted on to do what was best for the team. “Rick was, above all, a great teammate and a valued member of the program because he had no problems playing wherever he was needed,” says Andy Marafino, his head coach at BMHS. “He eventually settled in as our starting right fielder and top relief pitcher as a senior, but if we needed someone to fill in somewhere, he was willing. I will never forget how unselfish he was in order to help his teammates and the team be the best they could be.”
high-quality life-coaching & educational services to adults with developmental disabilities” while “systematically immersing each client into their community, and building a platform that helps reach their full potential.” Today, Abilities Unlimited has two locations - one in Lake Forest and one in Fountain Valley - with plans to expand.
The short description of his business is that it functions as a day care for adults with special needs, but one look at what Abilities Unlimited does illustrates that Perez and his staff are giving their clients the tools they need to reach their full potential in every aspect of life. The clients he serves are adults between the ages of 22-70 who have been diagnosed with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Bi-Polar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Epilepsy or other intellectual disabilities. “Most of the people we help have the intellectual development of someone between the ages of four to 12 or 13,” says Perez.
As high school students commonly do, Perez wanted to create his own path and had grand plans for a career in law or working as a sports agent. While earning his degree in Business with an emphasis in Entrepreneurship from Cal State Fullerton, Perez served as an intern at several law firms, but soon found that career was not for him. “I did not like the lifestyle lawyers were living,” he says. “They did not seem to have any work-life balance and I wanted to make sure that the career I chose would allow me to have time for family.” Ultimately, Perez went back to what he knew best and what he witnessed every day in his own home: helping people in need.
Perez eventually earned his Master’s Degree in Counseling with an emphasis in Applied Behavior Analysis from Cal State, Los Angeles and he became a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (B.C.B.A). After gaining more professional experience working with individuals with special needs, Perez set out to start his own business helping adults with developmental disabilities and, in 2009, he founded Abilities Unlimited. The mission of the company is “focused on providing
Because he is board certified, Perez is able to write behavior plans and craft individualized programs for the people under his care. It is this individualized care that serves as a hallmark of the business. No matter the age or stage of development of his clients, the goal for Perez and his staff is to create a path for each individual to thrive to the best of their abilities, whether the goal is to help them make friends, take accelerated classes or get a job. “What is most satisfying is helping improve someone’s life and increasing the happiness to their family structure,” he says.
The services Abilities Unlimited provides goes far beyond providing fun excursions - such as taking them on cruises or taking them fishing - not normally accessible to them. Perez prides his company on helping those in his care grow to have healthy social relationships and learn independent living skills. “It is important for us to take our clients out and make each day fun for them,” says Perez, “but what is truly important is seeing them make real connections with others and seeing their social development improve.”
Some of the things Perez is most proud of is preparing his clients to be ready to sign up for classes at local junior colleges and getting them full and part-time employment. “Seeing the look on their faces when they tell someone they are going to college is priceless,” says Perez.
Potential
One of his favorite success stories to tell is about one girl who got a full-time job at McDonald’s who has moved all the way up to working the drivethrough. For the clients who they help get jobs, Perez states that they have a 97% rate of staying employed. “Their life is their job,” he says. “They take extreme pride in what they do and they love what they do. For us, it is fulfilling to see them be so happy working and earning money. This is all about being part of the community in which you live. It is about helping them not only live the life they want to live, but live the life they are supposed to live.”
When asked what influences from his time at Bishop Montgomery helped shape who he is today and where his business has taken him, Perez noted that the private education his parents provided him surrounded him with like-minded students that were focused on growing themselves and achieving more. It is one of the reasons why he and his wife send all three of their children to Catholic school. “We ultimately are the product of who we surround ourselves with,” he says, “so the baseball team and coaches were a huge positive focus for me in keeping connected to the right path.”
Perez also credits several of his classroom teachers at BMHS with motivating him and bringing out the best in him and his classmates. “Mrs. Skelley, Ms. Rey and Ms. Colette taught with a loving approach that held you accountable to being your very best. They were invested in you and you felt accountable not to let them down.” It is this care and investment in helping others that guides him on a daily basis. Through Abilities Unlimited and his passion for helping those with developmental disabilities, Perez provides each of the adults in his care with that same loving approach. “It is all about the simple human touch of helping someone.”

CLASS OF 2025 GRADUATES BUILD FOREVER RELATIONSHIPS
On May 30, the Class of 2025 became the 65th class to graduate from Bishop Montgomery. It was the first class to graduate under the new President-Principal leadership model, including the school's first BMHS Alumna Principal, Dr. Michele Starkey '85. On a beautiful day on campus, BMHS celebrated 208 outstanding young men and women and their incredible accomplishments during their four years. The day was a celebration of the many academic accomplishments of the class members and it was also a time when the relationships built between their peers and their teachers was present in the words and actions of the graduates. "One of the things I appreciate the most about Bishop is the relationships I've built," says Pierson Howe '25. "Here, teachers know you by name and care about you as a person. Friends become like family, and you learn that success is not just measured by grades or awards, but by the kind of person you are becoming along the way."
Salutatorian Oliva Park '25 echoed her classmates' feelings about how Bishop Montgomery helped shape her as a person ready to take the next steps in her life. "My experience [at Bishop] has shaped me into a motivated and ambitious student, but also a faithful and responsible individual. I have learned the importance of using my gifts and talents to serve others and I've developed a deeper, more personal relationship with God that continues to guide my choices and actions."
Olivia Park '25 was a Valedictorian and was chosen to be the Salutatorian for the Class of 2025. She will attend UCLA to study psychology.

Upgrades Highlight a Busy Year
Noticeable physical changes to the campus have occurred in the last 12 months, bringing new life and new programs to the school. BMHS also added new academic programs, further enhancing what our students are able to enjoy.
In addition to our new pathways (see page 18), BMHS now offers dual enrollment through Seton Hill University. With most of BMHS' Advanced Placement courses, students can now choose to receive both high school and college credit.
During Easter break, BMHS began installing new roofing on many of the campus buildings and freshening the look with new exterior paint. The new roofs are reflective and have greatly cut down heat in the classrooms and made all of our buildings more energy efficient. By the time students were back in classes in August, new roofs and paint were completed on the main office, chapel, three classroom buildings, main gymnasium, and Student Activity Center.
This summer, BMHS added two pickleball courts (above) in the space between the main gymnasium and Thomas More Hall and the athletic snack bar. The courts are a welcome addition to our
physical education department and our campus.
Beginning in December, the main gymnasium received significant upgrades and improvements. The exterior of all the windows received new treatments and the blinds on the interior were removed to make way for new championship banners. These new banners will reflect all of our league, CIF and State titles in school history. Each program will have a black banner listing all league titles. All CIF title banners will be gold and all state title banners will be white. In the spring, a new state-of-the-art sound system was installed in the gymnasium.
Summer Programs Provide Valuable Opportunities
Student Superlatives
• Caden Choi '25 was named a National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist and Kaila Hahn '25 was named a National Merit Scholarship Program Recipient. Finalists and recipients qualify based on their PSAT/NMSQT scores and are typically in the top 1% of their state. Finalists and recipients complete a detailed application, including an essay, academic record, recommendations, and an endorsement by their high school principal. Choi will attend USC and Hahn will attend Carnegie Mellon University.
• Patrick Elming ‘25 and Hanna Mussie ‘25 received the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Christian Service Award for their contributions to their communities. They were presented their awards by Archbishop José Gómez and Superintendent Paul Escala at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
• Jubin Hong '27 was awarded the Presidential "Gold" Service Award for completing 100+ hours of service over the past year.
Some of our students (and alumni) participated in leadership programs this summer. Brooks Henry ‘26 and Justine Wells ‘26 attended the American Legion California Boys & Girls State held at Sacramento State University. The conference teaches high school students about state government, elections, and legislative processes. Alumni Saoirse O’Lionain ‘24 and George Hasnah ‘23 were also on hand to help to lead the program. Maria Nadsady ‘26 (right) spent a week at the American Legion Auxiliary California Girls State in Sacramento. During her time at Girls State, Maria participated in workshops designed to illustrate how local, county, and state governments operate. Bella Tieman '26, a cousin of Maria, participated in the National Student Leadership Conference program for Forensic Science in Washington, DC. A highlight of the nine-day program was visiting FBI headquarters and learning about FBI-related fields. Bella has since applied for the FBI Teen Academy in Los Angeles and was accepted for their August 2025 program.
• In February, the BMHS Song Team competed at the NRG SoCal Classic competition in San Dimas. They placed first in their division and also took home the Grand Champion trophy for receiving the highest score of the day over all high school competitors. Two individuals also received awards for Best Showmanship in their respective categories: Oriana Evins '25 and Amira Lovejoy '28
• Lea Vegh ‘25 was a California Scholarship Federation Seymour Award Finalist and received a $2,000 scholarship for college. The Seymour Award is regarded as one of the highest scholastic honors given to high school students in the state of California. Vegh was nominated based on her number of CSF membership semesters, her numerous volunteer hours of peer tutoring, and her outstanding leadership and service commitments.

Four Longtime Employees Off to Retirement
When the 2024-25 school year ended, it was the end of an era as four employees retired after serving BMHS for decades. Jan Fitzpatrick, Rick Egan, Steve Miller, and Pam (York) Altobelli '73 served BMHS for a combined 126 years and their presence on campus will always be a part of the school.
At the end of December, Jan Fitzpatrick (left) completed 40 years as Bishop's receptionist. She was the voice of Bishop Montgomery and the first person many people encountered when visiting campus. In addition to working at BMHS, Jan, and her husband, Terry, sent their two children to Bishop (Bridget '88 and Tom '91), have two grandchildren who are graduates (Macy '22 and Fletcher '24) and one grandchild who is a junior (Abby '27). At the Mothers' Club Christmas Luncheon where she was honored, it was written that recalling what attracted her to the job, she said, "I just wanted everyone to feel special when they walked in the door, and I knew I could do that." Jan truly made everyone who called or stepped onto campus feel part of the Bishop family.
In his 33 years in the Theology Department, there were probably only a few days where Rick Egan (right) did not tell one of his famous jokes ("If it's not Baroque, don't fix it"). He will always be known for those jokes, but he will, more importantly, also be remembered for caring about his students and the people they were learning to become. Nearly every day, he sent his students off to their next class with the same line, "have a moral life." Upon his retirement, he penned an open letter to Bishop Montgomery to thank his students, colleagues, parents and the community. "For the last 33 years I have had the fortunate opportunity to be a teacher at Bishop. To all my students, whoever you are, how ever you acted, whatever you learned, thank you. There is no such thing as a teacher without students. You made me into the teacher I am today. Thank you for being the occasion for me to learn how to be a teacher." Thank you, Rick, for making Bishop a better place and your students better people.
Steve Miller served in many capacities in his 28 years at Bishop. He served as Dean, Athletic Director and Assistant Principal caring for the school facilities as Plant Manager. He and his wife, Laura, are also the proud parents of Class of 2025 alumnus, Jake Miller. For 28 years, he served with humility, excellence and a love for Bishop Montgomery. He was instrumental in many of the renovations and projects that saw the campus grow over the years, from the transformation of Thomas More Hall into a theater to the construction of the Student Activity Center and Schneider Retreat Center. We are grateful to Steve for making Bishop Montgomery a better place during his tenure at the school.
Pam York-Altobelli '73 served at BMHS in a variety of roles for 26 years, but her connection to the school is much deeper than that. She is a member of the Class of 1973 and her two boys, Andy '96 and Kevin '00, are both BMHS graduates. Her late husband, Rocky, was also in the Class of 1973. As an employee, she wore many hats. She worked in the Advancement Office and Tuition Office, served as Director of Human Resources and Office Manager for the last few years. Her impact on the school is not just in what she provided, but in how she made everyone feel. At the retirement party, Yvette Vigon-Morffi '87, Vice Principal, thanked Pam for her impact on the school. "You've worn countless hats, and you've done so with unwavering grace, quiet strength, and deep loyalty. You’ve made a lasting difference—not just in how BMHS runs, but in how it feels."
Father's Mass: A New BMHS Tradition
For decades, one of the highlights of each year for our seniors is our May Crowning Mass where we honor the Virgin Mary and recognize her as the "Queen of May." It is also a Mass to celebrate all of the mothers and mother figures in the lives of our senior class.
In March of 2025, Bishop Montgomery started a new tradition with a Mass to celebrate the fathers and father figures of our current seniors on the Feast Day of St. Joseph. The Mass and feast day honor St. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus and a model of faith, humility, and hard work. The day celebrates his role in the Holy Family, his patronage of workers, and his example of righteous living.
Following the celebration of the Eucharist, the fathers in attendance received a blessed pin and words of appreciation from our students. Fr. Matt Murphy from St. James Church presided over the liturgy and reminded everyone to be obedient and supportive just as St. Joseph was to the Holy Family.
Kairos Retreats Serve as Highlight for Seniors
The retreat program developed by the Campus Ministry office is an important part of the education Bishop Montgomery provides. Under the leadership of Campus Minister Amy Hendry Adams '04, the retreat program seeks to build upon the faith life of each student. The retreats, along with the classroom curriculum, provide opportunities for our students to express, explore, and celebrate their faith.
For many Bishop Montgomery seniors, one of the highlights of their four years of high school is their Kairos retreat. Many alumni recall the impact the three day retreat had on them at Bishop and beyond.
The word Kairos means “It's God's time." Senior year is a time of transition. Students are ending high school, beginning college, leaving home or off to their next chapter. Through talks such as Life Graph, Values, Knowing God and Living the Fourth, students are provided an opportunity to conduct an evaluation of their life and set goals for their future.
The motto "Live the Fourth" refers to living each day after the retreat with the same spirit and intentionality
BMHS is Energy Star Certified
experienced during the retreat itself and integrating those positive changes into daily life.
Bobby Eubanks '18 is one of those alumni who look back on Kairos as a transformative moment in their lives. “Going on Kairos as a senior gave me an opportunity to hang out with new classmates and allowed me to dive deeper into the person they are and who they want to be," he says. "It was a sacred moment where I learned many of my classmates were going through the same struggles as me, especially with the pressure of making a decision about post-graduation. I would suggest all seniors to go on it because you will come back with a new found perspective and appreciation for yourself and all of the people that impact your life!”
Academic Pathways Provide Experiential Learning Opportunities
With the start of the new school came four new academic pathways for Bishop Montgomery's students to explore. The pathways give students the opportunity to select a specific area of study in addition to the outstanding college preparatory curriculum provided. Through the pathways, students are exposed to advanced level coursework and clubs designed to provide hands-on and project-based experiences. The four new pathways, below, give BMHS five in total. In 2019, the school introduced its Engineering Pathway.
• The Arts, Media & Entertainment Pathway is designed for students who have a passion for creative expression, communication & storytelling. Within this pathway, students choose between two tracks: Design, Visual & Media Arts or Performing Arts.
• The Legal Pathway is designed for students who have a passion for research, debate, public speaking & writing. In addition to their academic course, students participate in either the Speech & Debate Club or Mock Trial Club throughout their four years.
• The Social Justice & Advocacy Pathway is designed for students who have a passion for promoting equity & inclusion in society. Students explore social justice concepts, historical contexts and current issues pertaining to social justice. Students also participate in BMHS service clubs.
We are proud to announce that Bishop Montgomery is now an Energy Star Certified school. With a score of 92, our campus is more energy efficient than 92% of businesses like ours in California.
In the last 12-18 months, the school has made a concerted effort to be more energy efficient. The ballasts and lights in the Student Activity Center have been converted to LED and plans to convert the rest of the school to LED is underway. Additionally, the new roofs installed on all the buildings are reflective as a means to cut down on heat in the classrooms and offices.
• The Sports Medicine Pathway is designed for students who have an interest in athletic training, kinesiology, orthopaedics, physical therapy or any sports-medicine related field. Students gain experience in the field and complete volunteer hours with BMHS athletic trainers or at an off-campus approved facility.
Drama Productions Highlight A Celebration of The Arts
Each year, our students display their talents in visual and performing arts in stunning ways. Our musicians in TBK, actors, actresses and crew for theater productions and artists who display their talents in photography, painting, drawing and other mediums are an inspiration for their classmates and the community with which they share their talents. This past school year was a particularly special year for our Drama Department. Their productions of Little Women and Puffs displayed the growth of many of the senior actors and actresses who were part of the program for four years and welcomed the talents of promising new thespians.
For Little Women (left), the five women who the story centers around (the March sisters and their mother) were all played by seniors who were involved in Drama Lab productions throughout their four years at Bishop. While the play is a story about growing up and finding one's way, it's also a story about home. "It felt so fitting that this group got to spend some time at home with Drama Lab, so to speak, before they moved on to the next part of their journey," says Sierra Evans '10, one of the Drama Lab moderators and the director of Little Women. "It was such a special experience to have with them before they graduated. They're each talented actors, but I know that the care for each other that they put into their performance was very genuine." Two of those students, Maya Delgadillo '25 (UC Irvine) and Jennifer Walsh '25 (Northwestern University) are pursuing degrees in theater at their respective colleges.
Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic (below, left) is a parody of the Harry Potter book series from the perspective of members of the Hogwarts house, Hufflepuff, or Puffs. Drama Lab moderator Megan Ashby-Moreau '01 chose the show because "it is lighthearted, nostalgic for us Potter fans, and also deeply heartfelt," she says. "The underlying theme throughout the play is that you don’t need to be exceptional to be good. You don’t need to be a hero to do heroic things. Everyone has a story worth telling. I think that’s such an important perspective, especially for high school students— your story is worth telling, even if it isn’t spectacular or filled with adventure."
The cast of Puffs was a unique mix of freshmen, seasoned theater veterans, and upperclassmen who just wanted to try it out. The challenge for Moreau in directing the play was it involved an enormous cast of "very energetic students who all adore each other." "Most days it was akin to herding feral cats in a rainstorm," she says. "Still, it was all worth it in the end when they pulled off a truly spectacular performance. I was even able to get the faculty (right) involved by taking their portraits as Hogwarts professors to decorate the set."
Torrance Mayor George Chen Visits Campus
During the 2024-25 school year, Bishop Montgomery was honored to welcome to campus George Chen, Mayor of the City of Torrance, on several occasions. In the fall, Mayor Chen met with school administrators to take a tour of campus and hear about the school's plans moving forward to upgrade facilities. While on his visit, Mayor Chen outilined his visions for the future of Torrance, including being a beacon for the world when the Olympics come to Los Angeles in 2028.
In April, the mayor and his wife were guests of the school at Knight Fest in the main gymnasium While at the event, Mayor Chen visited with BMHS alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends and enjoyed the festive and community atmosphere of the event.
The mayor was back on campus in May to help BMHS celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with the students in the Asian Pacific Islander Student Association and many other students (pictured, above left). During lunch, the mayor spoke to students about his journey from the time he emigrated from Taiwan in the 1960's to his time working as an engineer at Raytheon to coming into public office in Torrance.
Flag Football Off to a Great Start at BMHS
The newest sport in California, Girls' Flag Football, was wildly popular on campus and Bishop Montgomery's inaugural season was a success in many ways. Not only were there a large number of girls' on the team, the Knights had a winning record, won their first playoff game and were seconds away from advancing to the CIF-SS quarterfinals. The season was a smashing success and the future is bright.
Under the guidance of head coach Chris Hunter, the Knights started the season by winning their first two games en route to a 6-5 record and a spot in the inaugural CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs. Hunter proved to be the perfect coach for the Knights, bringing energy and experience to the team, as well as a familiarity to the school. Prior to becoming the first flag football coach in BMHS history, Hunter served as a lower level coach in the baseball program and he coached flag football for years at Nativity Catholic School in Torrance.
In the opening round game of the playoffs, the Knights hosted La Quinta High School and were dominant in
their 32-6 win. In the second round, the Knights hosted Artesia and played one of the most exciting games of the season. The Knights held the lead with just seconds remaining when Artesia connected on a long pass as time expired to win 25-24.
Following the season, three members of the team were named to the All-Santa Fe League team. Meridian Cordova '25, the team's quarterback, was the lone Knight named to the 1st team. Named to the second team were Natalie Nilson '27 and Aubrey Walker '26
New Athletic Hall of Fame Class to be Inducted in January
On January 23, 2026, BMHS will induct its newest class into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place in the Schneider Retreat Center prior to the boys' basketball game.
Class of 2025 Inductees:
(pictured below, left to right)
Mike Long '69 was a standout runner on the cross country and track teams. He was a CIF finalist in both sports and holds the BMHS record in the 2-mile run.
Mike Mendoza '81 starred at quarterback for the Knights. He was the Angelus League Offensive Player of the Year and BMHS' 1981 Sportsman-of-the-Year.
Kim Willeman led the girls' volleyball program to great success. She led the team to 7 CIF titles and 3 state titles and was named CIF Coach of the Year six times and Daily Breeze Coach of the Year twice.
Hedder Ilustre '99 was a standout member of two CIF and three State championship volleyball teams and was named All-American in 1998 as a senior.
Doug Mitchell Notches 800th Career Win
On November 20, 2024, Boys' Basketball coach Doug Mitchell won his 800th game as a head coach when the Knights defeated Palm Desert 78-37. With the win, Mitchell became only the 15th coach in state history to win 800 games. In his 36 years at BMHS, Mitchell has a record of 801-240 and a career head coaching record of 812-262. Prior to coming to BMHS, Mitchell served as the head coach for two years at his alma mater, South Torrance. He has won six CIF-SS titles and four State titles at BMHS.
Justin Cobbs '09 is the only player in boys' basketball program history to be named All-CIF all four years. He holds the BMHS record for most points scored in a game with 47. As a senior he was named state player of the year.
Stephen Thompson, Jr. '15 is the career scoring leader for the boys' basketball program and was named all-league, AllCIF, all-state and all-area multiple times. He was named All-American as a senior.
BMHS Teams & Athletes Have Impressive 2024-25 Year
The 2024-25 athletic season was another successful year for BMHS' athletic programs and student-athletes. In all, 11 teams qualified for CIS-SS playoffs and an additional four teams were represented in the playoffs in individual competitions. Six teams entered the playoffs as league champions and four other student-athletes won individual league titles in their respective sports. Perhaps the most impressive part of the year was that 12 studentathletes earned most valuable player recognition during their seasons.
One of the highlights of the fall season was the inaugural season of Girls' Flag Football as the team made a run in the playoffs (see previous page). Another highlight was the young Girls' Volleyball team that reached the playoffs under the direction of first year head coach Tawnee Luafalemana. The Knights finished 17-7 on the year and were led by the Balestrieri sisters (pictured). Stephanie '26 was a 1st Team All-Del Rey League selection and Stacy '28 was named the league Most Valuable Player as a freshman. The Girls' Tennis team continued to shine. They made the playoffs for the 19th consecutive year and were led by the Del Rey League Doubles Championship duo of Madison James '26 and Sydney Sellan '26.
The winter season saw three of the four programs win league titles and advance to the playoffs. Boys' Soccer, Girls' Basketball and Girls' Soccer all had outstanding seasons. Boys' soccer reached the second
round of the playoffs behind league MVP Caiman Mahloch '25, who had an impressive season. He scored 30 goals on the year, the second most in school history. The girls' basketball team won their eighth straight league title and were led by 3-time league MVP Jordin Blackmon '25, who will attend Rice University in the fall. Girls' soccer had a dominating season in league play. The team was undefeated in league games where they gave up only one goal. Berlin Alcala '25 was named league Goalkeeper of the Year.
In the Spring, Boys' Tennis, Girls' Beach Volleyball and Softball all captured league titles on their way to the CIF playoffs. Dylan De Vera '26 continued an impressive career for the tennis team, capturing his third straight league singles title and advancing through individual sectionals to reach the championship bracket. Girls' Beach Volleyball won another league title and, like she did in the spring, Stacy Balestrieri '28 was named league MVP. The softball team went through league play undefeated and were led by the battery of Meridian Cordova '25 behind the plate and Macey Kim '25 on the pitcher's mound. Cordova were named league MVP and Most Valuable Pitcher, respectively. Two other student-athletes turned in excellent seasons to earn league MVP honors. Pierson Howe '25 was named Camino Real League Most Valuable Pitcher (see more below) and Mike Zhang '27 captured the Camino Real League individual golf title by an impressive eight strokes.
Howe Caps Brilliant Career & Joins Elite BMHS Company
One look at BMHS' baseball pitching records and it is easy to see that one name stands out: Bill Bordley '76 amassed records and awards that will be difficult to top. By the time he completed his senior year, however, Pierson Howe '25 found himself in the conversation as one of the best pitchers in school history.
As a sophomore, Howe was one of the top pitchers for the BMHS team that reached the CIF-SS semi-finals. That year, he went 5-1 with a 2.25 ERA and struck out 34 batters in 31 innings pitched. As a junior, Howe went 4-4 with a 2.59 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 62 innings pitched. At the time, his 81 strikeouts were the fifth most in school history in a single season. At the end of the season, he was named 1st Team All-Camino Real League and 2nd Team Daily Breeze All-Area.
In 2025 as a senior, Howe cemented his place in school history with an historic season for the Knights. In 71 innings pitched, he went 8-1 with a 0.98 ERA and 131 strikeouts, becoming just the third pitcher in BMHS history to eclipse 100 strikeouts. Bordley, in 1975 and 1976, and Chuck Desiderio in 1968 are the others to reach the century mark in single season strikeouts. Howe's 131 strikeouts are the third most in history and were the fifth most in the state in 2025.
Following the season, Howe was named Camino Real League Pitcher of the Year, 1st Team AllCIF and 1st Team All-State after helping the Knights to the second round of the CIF-SS playoffs. He is just the third BMHS baseball player to be named all-state by CalHiSports. Howe will pitch for Pepperdine University in 2026.

ANNUAL REPORT OF GIFTS 2024-2025
The report on the following pages gratefully recognizes the generous support from our alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends. We are blessed to have so many people who are partners in our mission to provide the students of Bishop Montgomery, both present and future, with their unwavering support. Gifts listed in the various giving levels this year reflect contributions made to the school between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025. Thank you for your investment in the young men and women of Bishop Montgomery. You make a profound, positive impact on our students who live the Gospel values each day.
Dear Friends of Bishop Montgomery,
The 2024-25 fiscal year was one of great growth in many ways. Gifts of time, talents and treasures from so many wonderful people in the community enhanced all that we are able to provide for the students. We are thankful to all of our alumni, faculty, staff, parents and friends who made an impact on the school and continue to help us grow.
At right, we are excited to share with you our Strategic Plan Goals. Last summer, BMHS began the process of establishing a comprehensive strategic plan for the next five years. Under the guidance of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the school identified key stakeholders to be part of the Strategic Planning Committee.
With the help of the committee, BMHS identified and invited members of the community to be part of the Strategic Planning Retreat, and in March, over 60 members of the community - alumni, faculty, staff, current and alumni parents and friends - gathered in the school’s media center for a planning retreat. Over two days, the group discussed the school’s strengths and areas for growth, worked in small groups and came together to share ideas and write the goal statements. We are blessed that so many members of the community gave their time and talents to create this landmark document.
The fiscal year saw great growth in our annual fund - The Bishop Montgomery Fund - and we are thankful for each gift and for each donor. We saw an increase in the number of first-time donors and the number of alumni donors. Additionally, our Day of Giving in June set a new standard for a one-day campaign at BMHS$131,360 was raised in 24 hours.
Bishop Montgomery would not be what it is without you. Thank you for blessing our school and our students. You truly make a difference in the life of Bishop Montgomery and in the lives of every student who walks our halls, today and in the future.
Gratefully,
Andy Marafino Director of Advancement

GIFTS IN MEMORY/HONOR
Throughout the past year, gifts have been made to honor an individual or to preserve and perpetuate the memory of loved ones. In 2024-25, the following family members, classmates, parents, and friends made their gifts in honor of those they love, in the spirit of faith and charity.

Bishop Montgomery lost a great friend when Bishop Joseph Sartoris passed away on June 27, 2025. Bishop Sartoris was ordained in 1953 and served as an associate pastor before becoming an Assistant Principal at Bishop Conaty High School. He was in Catholic education for several years, and then served in further parishes as associate pastor. He became the Administrator Pro Tempore at Dolores Mission and the Administrator at Nativity Parish in Los Angeles before assuming his first pastorate at St. Madeleine Parish in Pomona. In 1978 he was named pastor of St. Margaret Mary Parish in Lomita where he served until his appointment as Auxiliary Bishop in 1994. His 16 years in Lomita were extraordinary ones as he helped develop a variety of pastoral ministries and lay involvement. Ordained Auxiliary Bishop on the Feast of St. Joseph in 1994, he became the Regional Bishop for the San Pedro Pastoral Region, where he served for over eight years. On July 1, 2002, Bishop Sartoris reached the retirement age of 75 years and on December 31, 2002, Pope John Paul II accepted the retirement of Bishop Sartoris. In 2016, the Bishop Joe Sartoris Excellence Scholarship was established at BMHS. He was 97 years old.
Br. David Wagner, OFM Conv. passed away on March 18, 2025 in Illinois. Br. David taught both religion and fine arts at Bishop Montgomery from 1973-1976. In addition to teaching at BMHS, he taught at Queen of Angels in Riverside, St. Hedwig in Detroit and Holy Family in Peoria, IL.. He is survived by siblings, Ronald, Joyce, Joseph and James. He was 76 years old.
Bishop Montgomery is a school, a community and a family. It has been that way since the doors opened in 1957, and that family tradition grows stronger every year.
In the last five years alone, 116 graduates have at least one parent who is also a BMHS graduate.
Of the 208 graduates in the Class of 2024, 13 have at least one parent who is also a BMHS graduate (three have both) and many of them have siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins who graduated from Bishop Montgomery.
Thank you for continuing a wonderful family tradition.
All praise to thee... Montgomery

Riding for Hope
It was the summer of 1967 and the Beatles new album, “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,” was the hit record of the Summer (It still is a hit!) and the Beach Boys were groovy. I was working in the boat yard in Venice, and surfing 10th Street in Hermosa Beach. There were no computers, no cell phones, no Internet, no credit cards. Can you imagine that in today’s world? Ha, Ha. Having just graduated from BMHS, it was an easy and fun time to be alive in the Southern California South Bay. World events were not instantly staring you in the face and it was a time of freedom and excitement about what the future would hold for me and God’s plan for my life.
Fast forward to 2025. As I sit here today thinking of all that has happened since then, I feel a sense of fulfillment and the realization that if I could, I would do it all over again. I’ve loved every minute of my life and, at age 77, I often ask God why He has let me live so long? After leaving Bishop, I spent 2 years at El Camino College with a major in Architectural Drafting. I wanted to be an Architect, but upon losing my student deferment from the Vietnam draft, I decided to enlist in the Navy. The Navy did not need draftsmen, so they sent me to cook’s school and I became a cook and baker. I’ve been married to my sweetheart, Gina, for 55 years and we spent my Navy years stationed in Hawaii as a baker on Ford Island at the Naval Station Pearl Harbor. Of course I took my surfboard with me! After the Navy years we purchased a small cabin in the San Bernardino mountain village of Crestline, CA (subsequently Mammoth Lakes and now Reno, NV) and I worked as a baker for Jensen's Old Country Bakery in Blue Jay, CA. After a few years of being tired of having to be at work by 3:00am, and not making enough money to support my growing family, I decided to enter the financial services business and have since completed a successful 40 year career as a financial advisor. We now have two sons, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. I never had a “bucket list.” I’ve lived it my whole life. Abraham Lincoln once said “It’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years”
In the earlier years, having accumulated more bakery fat than I wanted (too many donuts, ha, ha). I started running to lose weight. Running is my “Happy Hour.” In 45 years, I have run 268 races at every distance from 5K to full marathons, a few triathlons and biking events and still do so to this very day. At first it was just to lose weight and then it became friendly competitions with my friends. Living in the mountains most of my adult life, I have felt more at home in the forest than anywhere in the world except maybe in the ocean on my board. When I am in the forest or in the surf I can feel God’s arms wrapped around me as His awesome creation seems to fill my soul with happiness and peace. Running in the mountains is exceptionally rewarding. Today, I love running along the Truckee River listening to the water moving along and on the mountain trails above Lake Tahoe where I share the trail with numerous wildlife friends.
In 1998 I read an article in Runner's World magazine recruiting runners to run the San Diego Rock N” Roll Marathon and do fundraising for Team In Training (TNT), the athletic fundraising arm of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). The article said you can raise money for cancer research in honor of a cancer survivor or in memory of someone who has passed away from Leukemia. I didn’t know of any survivors, but remember having a brother who died of Leukemia. After doing some investigating, I found out that my brother, Ned, passed away from Leukemia in 1947 at the age of six. I never knew Ned, as I was born one year later. I often think that my parents thought of me as his replacement. All that I know of him comes from my mother, who has now passed away, and my older brother, Richard. Richard remembers playing with Ned when they were little and his struggle with the illness. Richard remembers Ned getting tired, run down and very pale. My mother would take him every couple of weeks to the hospital for a blood transfusion. Ned would come home all rosy cheeked and his strength would be back to normal. Then in a few weeks, he would get run down again and so, month after month, back to the hospital my mother would take him until finally he just could not go on. Back then they had no treatments; they just knew that it was a blood disease. Back then it was a sure death sentence. Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow, causing abnormal white blood cells to be produced rapidly. These abnormal cells can’t fight infection and they crowd out healthy blood cells. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is a global leader in the fight against blood cancer. Today, over 90% survive.
So, on June 1, 2025, I participated in America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride as my TNT fundraising event for this year. There were 450 TNT riders and three distances of your choosing. You could complete 35 miles, 72 miles (once around Lake Tahoe) or 100 miles (once around Lake Tahoe and down to Truckee and back to the Lake). I did the 100 route. With many rest stops, it took me 10 hours (8:50 ride time). The ride started in South Lake Tahoe riding clockwise around the Lake. The Emerald Bay switch backs were at the 10-mile mark and very steep. Then, traveling north, we passed Meeks Bay and Homewood. When I got to Tahoe City, I made a left turn and followed Highway 89 past Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley ski resorts to the city of Truckee, where there was a turn around back to the Lake. Heading east, lunch was served at Kings Beach (Yeah!), then on to easy peasy Incline Village. Up to the Spooner Lake Summit there was a series of three monster hills at mile 80. My legs were shot. I did some walking. The good news is with 4,924 feet of climbing there is a lot of downhill, and the downhill from Spooner was long and fast down highway 50. Heading through Cave Rock, the final way to the finish was easy and a sight for sore eyes, sore legs and sore butts! Ha, Ha. One foot in front of the other, one pedal at a time, you can do anything you put your mind to (even at my age) and in the words of that famous ski film Icon Warren Miller, “If you don’t do it this year you will be one year older when you do. Life is that simple. Don’t let it pass you by!”
I personally raised $6,140.00. The team that I was on from the central California valley raised $460,000.00 and all the teams from around the country that participated raised just south of $3,000,000. LLS is the voice of all blood cancer patients seeking access to quality, affordable, coordinated care so kids today have the chance for a long and prosperous life, something my brother Ned never had. It’s very rewarding and humbling to do something meaningful for people less fortunate than ourselves. God has blessed my life beyond belief and I will continue to give back to others as long as I am able.
My life’s verse is Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Our hope is in Jesus and our future is Heaven.
