Environmental Excellence Awards The UDIA NT Awards were recently held, and we are pleased to announce the Urbex and Land Development Corporation teams were winners of the Environmental Excellence award for Zuccoli Village. Welcome to the spring edition of Village Life!

Zuccoli is an exciting place to be with lots of exciting milestones on the horizon. We are looking forward to the arrival of a new public primary school in Zuccoli which will meet the needs of our growing community. The new school will be built adjacent to Mother Teresa Catholic Primary School on Zuccoli Parade and have the capacity to enrol up to 288 students. Construction has been brought forward by more than two years, with the school expected to open in term one, 2020.

Urbex Realty has branched into commercial leasing in the Northern Territory. Urbex Realty have already been trading in Northen Territory for over six years as marketing and sales agents on our Zuccoli Village development. The team have now expanded their services to include commercial leasing and general real estate sales at both Zuccoli Plaza and Oasis Shopping Village in Palmerston. Currently we have 17 leasing opportunities available across both centres, with eight at Zuccoli Plaza and nine at Oasis Shopping Village.

The Urbex Realty team looks forward to ensuring the community has a range of extra amenities at their fingertips once the vacant spaces are leased. Palmerston Regional Hospital NOW OPEN!

The Top End’s newest hospital in almost 40 years opened in August, creating 300 new local jobs! The 24/7, 116-bed facility puts a range of medical services in easy reach for residents of Palmerston.

Palmerston Regional Hospital provides a range of specialised health care services, including an emergency department operating 24 hours a day, state-of-the-art rehabilitation, day surgery, general medical ward, maternity services, geriatric evaluation and management (GEM) and outpatient clinics.

Located only a 13-minute drive away, Palmerston Regional Hospital is on Linco Road in the neighbouring suburb of Holtze.

Celebrating Roger Garrick Earlier in the year we were thrilled to welcome the Garrick family back to Zuccoli to celebrate a very special event.

Zuccoli’s Garrick Street was buzzing, with the neighbourhood coming together to celebrate Roger Garrick, whom the street is named after. 2018 marks ten years since Roger’s passing, and his wife Ann organised a wonderful get-together with her family, friends and the residents of Garrick Street to celebrate Roger.

Roger was a founding member of the Sanderson Conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society in 1983. He was a man of charity and would offer food, beds and clothes to those in need.

Together, under Roger’s presidency, the conference sponsored a number of refugee families and set up homes for their arrival. Through trips to island communities, Roger established with Croker and Bathurst Islands the delivery of bread for school breakfast programs. Between jobs, Roger would collect boxes of bread and deliver them to the barge to be shipped fortnightly to the islands.

Roger worked tirelessly giving back to the community, while also raising his own family of five children. The Garrick family are very proud that Roger’s work has been recognised and we were very pleased to celebrate this with them and the Zuccoli community.

Zuccoli developer, Urbex has been a proud major partner of the Darwin Buffaloes Football Club since 2013. With pre-season training recently commencing, we look forward to seeing the Buffs continue to go from strength to strength this NT AFL season.

The Buffs held their 2018 AGM in late August, with over 40 members in attendance. The morning was a great success with a new club committee elected. John Paterson stood down as president, after holding the role for the past decade. He will remain on as a committee member, and of course a very passionate supporter. After being involved in the club as a committee member, Shaun Pearce has taken over as president.

Urbex has also strengthened its support of the club with Zuccoli Project Director Tim Bycroft joining the board as a committee member.

Zuccoli Plaza Markets After a successful launch of the Zuccoli Plaza Markets earlier in the year, we are excited to announce they will now be held regularly, on the second weekend of every month.

This is a fantastic new event that has been created around the Zuccoli community and it is very exciting to see it being built from the ground up, with the help of our Zuccoli Plaza businesses and the Darwin Kids Community. With plenty of entertainment, kid’s activities, fabulous food vans and market stalls, we encourage you to pop down to the plaza and check out the action.

Leni’s Rainy Day Gardening Tips

You may recognise Leni, our friendly landscaper, from around Zuccoli and our recent TV ad. Leni works hard to ensure Urbex’s parks and streetscapes are in tip-top shape before handing over to council. With the wet season almost upon us, we caught up with Leni to learn how to best look after and prepare your garden for this wet season.

1. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR TIPS TO PREPARE THE GARDEN FOR THE WET SEASON? Up here in Darwin, now is the time to start doing most of your garden prep before the wet season arrives. As we are susceptible to cyclones and decent storms, it is the perfect time to prepare your garden well in advance. Trim back large plants and hedges and remove any dangerous tree limbs. If you are someone who composts, trim back all of the lank leaves and stalks and send them to your compost heap.

2. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FERTILISING PLANTS BEFORE THE WET ARRIVES? Fertilising your plants and lawn now is important and should be carried out before the wet arrives. The heavy rainfalls we get washes most of the fertiliser away, so slow release options are the best. If you are planting new trees that will grow in size, use a slow release pellet in the hole prior to planting the tree. Visit your local gardening store for advice and recommendations.

3. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST VEGGIE GARDEN VARIETIES FOR WET SEASON? The best veggies to grow in the wet season include cucumber, eggplant, sweet potatoes and pumpkins. If you plant pumpkins, be careful to keep them from taking over your yard, as they grow quickly. Another great idea is to plant a passionfruit vine, but note that it will take six to twelve months for it to fruit.

Activate offers participants an amazing opportunity to participate in good health and wellbeing initiatives across 45 weeks of the year, (it is run by the City of Plamerston in 5 x 9 week blocks). The program provides residents with a taste of the great range of physical activity options available in our community, catering for all fitness levels and abilities.
